A singer costume is really a costume of one moment: a tour, an album cover, a famous performance. When I style one, I pin it to a single era first, because that's what makes people say the name out loud. Then I build it from clothes, colour, hair and a prop, never from imitating somebody's face or body. The list mixes current pop stars like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish and Chappell Roan with performers who never go out of fashion, Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury among them, plus a run of country, disco and R&B looks. Nearly all of them start from thrift finds and closet basics, with sequins and gems doing the stagey part.

Toy Microphones, Sequins and Stage Shine on a Budget
Nearly every look here asks for sequins, rhinestones or metallic fabric, plus a microphone. A few small decisions make the difference between stagewear and something that looks like a party-shop bag.
Making the microphone
A toy mic from a dollar shop is fine as a base. I wrap the handle in silver tape or glue rhinestones in a band near the top, which is where cameras catch the light. Hollow plastic is light, so you can hold it for hours. For a wireless headset look, bend a pipe cleaner along your cheek from a thin headband and finish it with a small foam ball.
Adding sparkle to thrifted clothes
- Adhesive gems stick well to smooth, flat fabric and poorly to stretchy knits. For knits, use a dot of fabric glue under each gem and leave it overnight.
- Sequin trim by the metre is cheaper than a sequin garment. Run it down a trouser seam or round a neckline with a few hand stitches.
- Iron-on rhinestones melt cheap polyester, so try one on an inside seam first.
- Wear a soft layer under sequins at the underarms and neckline. The backs of sequins are sharp and rub skin raw over an evening.
1. Taylor Swift Eras Tour Costume

With Taylor Swift, pick one era and commit to it. Mixing three gives you a sparkly outfit nobody can place. For the tour look, a fitted sequin top and a matching high-waisted skater skirt in pink, blue or silver do most of the work, with rhinestone ankle boots and a stack of friendship bracelets. Soft waves, a side-swept fringe and red lipstick are the face. Sequin tops scratch at the underarm, so I wear a thin camisole underneath. If you want more coverage, glue fabric gems onto a plain jacket. A toy microphone and a small metallic crossbody finish it, and it's easy to wear trick-or-treating.
2. Sabrina Carpenter Tour Costume

Sabrina Carpenter is pastel sparkle with a retro edge. A pale blue or blush minidress, ideally with rhinestones, fringe or a heart neckline, goes over opaque tights or fitted shorts, and white platform boots ground it. The hair is the big signal: long blonde curls with soft curtain bangs, from a wig or your own hair curled at the ends. Rosy cheeks, a winged liner and gloss. A fluffy cropped jacket keeps you warm outside without breaking the colour story. I'd keep every piece in the same two or three soft shades; one bright accessory throws the whole look off. She's a good anchor for a group of pop stars.
3. Chappell Roan Pink Pony Costume

Chappell Roan's Pink Pony look is pink Western wear turned up loud. A pink fringe top with a matching skirt, shorts or flares, a rhinestone cowboy hat, a silver belt and pink or white boots. Long curly red hair is the cue people look for, so a wig is worth it here. The makeup is the fun part: pale base, strong blue shadow, heavy blush and red lips. A star microphone or a small hobbyhorse makes people laugh. Feather trim sheds and catches fire easily, so keep it well away from candles and pumpkin lanterns.
4. Beyoncé Cowboy Carter Costume

For Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter era, I start with a crisp white shirt tucked into denim shorts, jeans or a fringed skirt. Over it goes a silver vest or a rhinestone jacket, and on top a wide-brimmed white cowboy hat with metallic boots. Long honey-blonde waves, bronze shadow and a glossy neutral lip. A silver belt and big earrings add the shine. The cheap route is gluing adhesive gems onto a thrifted vest and a plain hat; press each gem down for a full minute and they hold much better. Denim, white and silver together tell the story.
5. Billie Eilish Neon Streetwear Costume

Billie Eilish's early streetwear look is about proportion: everything oversized. A neon green tee over a black long-sleeve, extra-baggy black shorts or cargo pants, striped socks and chunky black sneakers. The black hair with green roots is the clearest reference. A wig is easiest, but washable colour on the roots works if you're careful near the collar; it transfers onto light fabric. Smudged dark liner, minimal base, layered silver chains. Check that the sleeves don't swallow your hands, because you'll want to hold a drink.
6. Ariana Grande Pop Star Costume

Ariana Grande comes down to three things: an oversized top, tall boots and that high ponytail. A pastel sweatshirt or roomy grey hoodie long enough to sit over fitted shorts and tights, then thigh-high boots with a low, stable heel. Over-the-knee socks with ankle boots are a cheaper swap. For the ponytail, I scrape the hair up tight, add a long clip-in extension, then wrap a strand round the band and pin it. It's heavy, so expect a slight headache by midnight. Winged liner, soft pink cheeks and nude gloss. Bunny ears reference a darker era, but the ponytail is usually enough.
7. Lady Gaga Silver Stage Costume

A silver Lady Gaga look should feel sculptural while still being walkable. Start with a metallic dress or jumpsuit, or a fitted top over a structured skater skirt. The angular shoulders are the build: cut them from lightweight silver craft foam, warm them with a hair dryer to bend the curve, and fix them on with Velcro so they come off for sitting. Mirrored sunglasses, silver boots, a glittered toy mic. A platinum blunt bob or big waves, graphic liner and a few face gems. Leave sharp edges and towering platforms out of it; you'll be in crowds.
8. Britney Spears Red Jumpsuit Costume

The red jumpsuit is the Britney Spears look people know at once. A fitted red zip-front jumpsuit is best; a red long-sleeve top with matching high-waisted trousers works if the reds match. That colour match is the thing I check in daylight, because two slightly different reds look like a mistake. Flat ankle boots beat heels. Long, smooth, centre-parted hair, silver shadow and glossy pink lips, plus a toy headset mic. If the jumpsuit is tight, wear a breathable tank under it and choose a stretchy fabric.
9. Madonna Like A Virgin Costume

A Madonna-inspired bridal pop look is layered white with loud 1980s accessories. A white lace top and knee-length tulle skirt over opaque leggings, with white ankle boots. Then pile on lace fingerless gloves, faux-pearl strands, big earrings and a wide belt. A short veil clipped to a headband gives the bridal reference without tangling. Tousled blonde curls with a dark fabric bow, smoky liner, a drawn beauty mark and deep rose lips. Tulle crushes when you sit, so I fluff the skirt with a shake every so often. It stays family-friendly.
10. Cher Sequin Fringe Costume

Cher's 1970s stagewear is about shine and movement. A black or silver sequin top with flared trousers, then a fringed vest or light cape over it so something swings when you walk. The hair carries the whole thing: very long, straight and black with a centre part. Long straight wigs tangle at the nape, so I brush the ends with a wide-toothed comb every hour or so. Dramatic lashes, bronze shadow and big hoops. If you can't find sequin flares, run rhinestone trim down the outer seams of plain black ones.
11. Dolly Parton Rhinestone Costume

Dolly Parton should look cheerful and covered in country sparkle. A bright pink or turquoise Western shirt with a rhinestone skirt or flares, a white fringed vest and glittery low-heeled cowboy boots. The hair is the silhouette: a big blonde wig teased high and bouncy. Rosy cheeks, pink shadow, gloss, rhinestone earrings and a small toy guitar. Adhesive gems peel off thrifted polyester shirts quickly, so add a dot of fabric glue under the loose ones the night before. Big hair, colour and fringe say it all; no need to exaggerate anyone's figure or accent.
12. Selena Quintanilla Purple Jumpsuit Costume

Selena Quintanilla's purple jumpsuit is a simple look to wear. A long-sleeve purple jumpsuit, or a fitted purple top with high-waisted flares in the same shade, plus silver hoops and low ankle boots. Long dark hair in soft, full waves, black liner and a rich red lip. A silver toy mic, and a rhinestone belt if the outfit needs a waistline. I'd always choose stretch over stiff costume satin for this one, because you'll want to sit and dance. Keep it respectful and fan-made, and the purple, waves and red lip do the rest.
13. Shania Twain Leopard Costume

Shania Twain's head-to-toe leopard needs very few pieces. A leopard hooded jacket or fitted top with matching trousers or leggings is the iconic version; if you can't match the print, a long leopard coat over black flares works. Black ankle boots, gold hoops and a toy mic. Long, loose brown waves with a few pieces framing the face under the hood. Bronze shadow and peach blush suit the print. Keep jewellery minimal, because the pattern already does the talking. Look for a matching set sold together; two leopard prints from different shops almost never line up.
14. Cyndi Lauper 1980s Costume

Cyndi Lauper is joyful layering, and a thrift shop is the right place to shop for it. A bright corset-style top over a white blouse, a knee-length tulle skirt over striped leggings, scrunched socks and black lace-up boots. Then add bead necklaces, stacked bracelets, fingerless gloves and a wide belt. A teased red-orange wig with pink or yellow streaks. Blue shadow and bright red lipstick. Ribbons on the mic should stay short, or they wrap round everything. The clash has to look happy and deliberate, so repeat at least one colour from top to bottom.
15. Tina Turner Fringe Dress Costume

Tina Turner's fringe dress is built to move. A sleeveless gold or black knee-length dress with layered fringe, or rows of fringe trim added to a simple shift dress, over opaque tights. Comfortable black heels or heeled ankle boots. The hair is a full, textured brown shag with height at the crown. If you're adding fringe yourself, stitch it on rather than glue it, because dancing pulls glued trim loose. Keep the lowest row well clear of the floor so nobody treads on it. Smoky eyes, big earrings and a toy mic, then dance.
16. Amy Winehouse Beehive Costume

Amy Winehouse's look is basic black clothing with a lot of hair and liner. A fitted black polo or short black dress, a wide red belt and ballet flats, with small hoops. The beehive is the build: a foam or mesh insert at the crown, the wig smoothed over it, lots of pins and strong hairspray, with loose pieces around the face. A red flower clipped in adds colour and helps secure it. Draw the extended wing with a felt-tip liner, which holds a sharp line far better than a pencil. Skip copied tattoos; the hair and eyes are enough.
17. Sia Black And White Wig Costume

Sia's half-black, half-white bob is the whole costume. A simple black long-sleeve dress or jumpsuit with opaque tights and flat ankle boots, plus a big white bow or a structured white jacket for contrast. The wig should be blunt, split black and platinum, with the fringe across the upper face. I always trim that fringe a little so I can see; a wig you peer through all night is no fun on stairs. Minimal makeup underneath, since most of it is hidden. A white bow on a headband or a toy mic as the prop.
18. Katy Perry Candy Costume

A candy-themed Katy Perry look should be bright without becoming bulky. A pastel pink dress, or a top and skirt, covered in lightweight felt sweets, wrapped sweets and foam shapes. Felt candies are my preference because they don't crush when you sit. Striped tights, glittery ankle boots and a blue blunt-fringe bob wig. Shimmer shadow and glossy pink lips. Never attach real food; it melts, stains and attracts bugs. Stitch or tape every decoration down so nothing drops on the floor, and it's fine for a family party.
19. Rihanna Umbrella Costume

Rihanna's umbrella era is sleek monochrome black. A structured black minidress, or a long blazer over fitted shorts and opaque tights, with stable knee-high boots, silver earrings and a wide metallic belt. A short angled black bob, or longer hair tucked behind one ear for the asymmetry. Smoky grey eyes, sharp liner and a deep berry lip. The umbrella is the signature prop, but keep it closed inside; an open umbrella in a crowded room is an elbow in everyone's face. It could pass for a smart evening outfit.
20. Olivia Rodrigo Purple Punk Costume

Olivia Rodrigo's purple punk look is pop-rock with one colour running through it. A fitted purple tee, a plaid miniskirt, fishnets over opaque tights or shorts, chunky combat boots and a cropped faux-leather jacket. Decorate the shirt with safety-pin clips, small stars or washable lettering instead of copying official merch. Loose dark waves, smudged liner and purple shimmer. Fishnets snag on boot hooks, so put the boots on last. A sticker-covered mic or a light purple guitar, and silver chains to finish.
21. Dua Lipa Disco Costume

A Dua Lipa disco look is a modern take on the mirror-ball era. A silver sequin jumpsuit, or a metallic halter with high-waisted flares, plus white platforms with a sensible heel and a small mirrored bag. Glossy straight hair or loose waves with a centre part, silver shadow, sharp liner and nude gloss. If a full sequin jumpsuit sounds too hot or itchy, put the shine on top and wear stretch flares below. Cheap sequins shed, so give the garment a good shake outside before you leave.
22. Charli XCX Brat Costume

Charli XCX's Brat look is club basics in acid green. A white tank or black tee with a neon green mini, shorts or low-rise cargos, a black faux-leather jacket and knee boots or chunky sneakers. Loose, slightly messy dark hair; the less styled, the better. Smudged liner, a pink flush and glossy lips, plus narrow sunglasses and silver hoops. Skip copying the branded lettering; the exact green does the job. Take a swatch to the shop if you can, because that shade is more yellow than most people expect. Most of it can be worn again.
23. Lana Del Rey Retro Costume

A Lana Del Rey look is soft vintage, not an exact copy of one performance. A white lace midi dress with a fitted waist, cream ballet flats or low block heels, and a light cardigan for cooler nights. Long brown hair brushed out into big waves with lift at the crown, with a red rose clip above one ear. A wing of liner, full lashes, peach blush and a muted rose lip. A small vintage-style bag and a silver mic. I keep accessories away from anything that reads bridal, such as veils or white gloves, so it stays on the retro side. It suits a party for any age.
24. Stevie Nicks Flowing Black Costume

Stevie Nicks is all about soft black layers that move. A long black dress with loose sleeves, a fringed shawl or light velvet vest, opaque tights and sturdy black platform boots. Long tousled blonde waves, plus a black top hat if you want concert drama. Smoky brown eyes and a neutral lip, layered silver rings and a tambourine with short ribbons. Chiffon layers slide around, so I wear a fitted slip or bodysuit underneath to anchor them. Mystical, yes; no ritual symbols or scary details needed.
25. Miley Cyrus Gold Dress Costume

Miley Cyrus's newer stage look is a gold dress and big hair. A metallic gold midi with fringe, sequins or one shoulder, sheer tights and block-heel sandals. The blonde wig needs a full, high blowout with darker roots; tease it at the crown and set with hairspray before putting it on. Bronze shadow, peach blush and a warm nude lip. Gold hoops and stacked bracelets, and keep it there if the dress is heavily decorated. A cropped black jacket adds warmth without hiding the gold.
26. Gwen Stefani Ska Punk Costume

Gwen Stefani's ska-punk look is graphic black and white with a bold red lip. A white cropped tank or fitted tee with loose black cargo trousers and a checkered belt, plus combat boots or platform sneakers. Platinum hair in two high mini buns or a sculpted ponytail. Thin arched brows, a black wing and bright red lipstick are non-negotiable; a red that leans blue looks truer than an orange one. A checkered overshirt tied at the waist adds coverage. Skip the forehead decorations from her earlier styling; they carry cultural meaning, and the costume reads fine without them.
27. Pink Pop Rock Costume

A Pink-inspired look is athletic and ready for a high-energy show. A fitted black tank with metallic cargo trousers or distressed black jeans, a cropped faux-leather vest and lace-up combat boots. The hair is the signal: a short pale pink wig styled into a fauxhawk, or washable colour on a pixie cut. Smoky liner, strong brows, silver cuffs and a black toy headset mic. Fabric straps clipped to the trousers add movement, but keep them short enough not to snag on furniture. Forget the aerial tricks; the clothes carry it.
28. Elvis Presley White Jumpsuit Costume

The white jumpsuit with a high collar makes the Elvis Presley look. A comfortable white zip-front jumpsuit, or white flares with a fitted high-collar jacket, decorated with gold trim and blue rhinestones applied with fabric glue. Glue gems with the garment laid flat and leave it overnight; gems glued while hanging slide down before they set. White ankle boots and a wide gold belt. A black pompadour wig with neat sideburns, and leave your own skin tone and features alone. Gold-tinted glasses and a toy mic. A white blazer with matching flares gives the same outline if a jumpsuit isn't available.
29. Freddie Mercury Yellow Jacket Costume

The yellow military-style jacket is the clearest Freddie Mercury costume. A white tank tucked into fitted white trousers, a bright yellow cropped jacket with buckle or strap detail, white sneakers and a studded black belt. Short dark hair, neat, and a drawn costume moustache, without touching other features. A silver armband is the extra concert detail. In a crowded room I'd swap the half-mic stand for a handheld toy mic; a stand gets caught on everything. White trousers show every mark, so pack a stain wipe.
30. Michael Jackson Red Jacket Costume

Michael Jackson's red-and-black jacket keeps the look playful rather than scary. A bright red zip jacket with black trim over a black V-neck, fitted black trousers, white socks and black loafers. Loafers on a wooden floor can be slippery, which matters if you'll attempt a moonwalk, so scuff the soles first or choose a pair with grip. A short curly black wig, subtle makeup, and no change to your skin tone or face. The single white sequin glove, dark glasses and a light toy mic finish it. Leave the horror makeup out.
31. Prince Purple Rain Costume

Prince's Purple Rain look is rich purple with ruffles. A white ruffled shirt under a fitted purple jacket, matching slim trousers or black ones with a purple side stripe, and black heeled boots with a stable base. A dark curly wig swept high. Soft smoky liner and a berry lip. Lace cuffs pinned inside the sleeves so they spill out at the wrist are an easy detail. Velvet in the right purple is the hardest thing to find, so I'd start the search there and build the rest around it. A small purple guitar or a jewelled mic, and no imitation of personal mannerisms.
32. David Bowie Ziggy Stardust Costume

Ziggy Stardust is colour, geometry and height. A metallic blue or red fitted jumpsuit with walkable platform boots, a structured gold belt and small shoulder accents cut from flexible craft foam. A short bright orange wig spiked up and back. The lightning bolt goes across one side of the face in cosmetic-grade paint; I sketch it with a light pencil first and patch-test the paint on the inner wrist the day before, and keep the colour clear of the eyes. Metallic shadow and a neutral lip. A silver toy mic is all you need to carry.
33. Elton John Feathered Glasses Costume

Elton John is maximum sparkle on a comfortable suit. A bright blue, pink or white suit with rhinestones along the lapels and pockets, a sequined shirt, metallic loafers or platform sneakers. The glasses are the star: oversized star frames trimmed with feathers. Check that the lenses aren't dark or warped, because you'll be wearing them indoors. A short blonde wig, light makeup, rosy cheeks. A small toy keyboard or glitter mic. No embellished suit? Removable gem stickers on a thrifted jacket get you there.
34. Harry Styles Sequin Jumpsuit Costume

A Harry Styles tour look should be bold and easy to dance in. A sleeveless sequin jumpsuit with coloured panels in pink, blue, silver or rainbow tones, or high-waisted flares with a sparkly vest. White heeled boots or low platforms and several strands of faux pearls. Short brown hair in loose waves with lift at the front. Dewy skin, a little liner and a touch of glitter near the eyes. Coloured rings add the stage detail. Skip copying his tattoos; the flares and sequins carry it. Sequin jumpsuits are warm, so I'd choose sleeveless for a crowded party.
35. Bruno Mars Retro Stage Costume

A Bruno Mars look is retro tailoring with a silky shirt. A burgundy or mustard satin shirt with the top buttons open over a white undershirt, high-waisted black flares and glossy black loafers, plus a matching jacket if you want it dressier. A neat pompadour or, more easily, a narrow-brim fedora. Tinted glasses, a slim gold chain and a toy mic. Satin shows sweat quickly, so the undershirt matters more than it looks. Choose a loose, breathable fit so you can dance all night.
Big Hair That Survives a Night of Dancing
So many of these singers are recognised by their hair first, Dolly's height, Ariana's ponytail, Amy's beehive, Sia's bob. That hair has to last through dancing, a hot room and maybe a coat hood.
- Style the wig the day before on a head form or a tall jar, not on your head. Tease, shape and spray it, then let the spray dry overnight.
- Use a wig cap and pin the wig through the cap at the temples and nape with bobby pins crossed in an X. Tall styles tip backwards without the nape pins.
- Build height with a foam or mesh insert under the hair instead of hairspray alone. It's lighter and doesn't collapse as the room warms up.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from heat tools and candles; most costume fibre frizzes or melts.
- Pack a small travel hairspray, four spare pins and a wide-toothed comb in your bag.
If you're doing a group of singers, sort out whose hair takes longest and get that person ready first. A beehive or a teased country wig can take far longer than the outfit, and it's the part the photos will show.
Pick One Era and Let It Carry the Look
You don't need an expensive replica for a music costume. Start with one signature outfit from one moment, then back it up with hair, makeup, shoes and a safe prop. Sequins, fringe, metallic fabric, a good wig and a toy microphone turn thrifted basics into stagewear. If you'll be dancing or walking for hours, go for flat shoes, breathable layers and accessories that are fixed on properly. Celebrate the performer's clothes and music, and never copy physical, racial or cultural features. There's a look here for current pop fans and for anyone who'd rather go disco, country or classic rock, at most budgets and ages.
