Celebrity costumes are the ones I enjoy styling most, because the clothes are real fashion and most of them can be worn again. You don't need a replica gown or professional effects. What you need is the star's outline, their hair, their colours and the one accessory people associate with them, and the rest can be approximate. The thirty looks below cover tour outfits, music-video moments, red-carpet dresses and old Hollywood, and almost all of them start from thrifted pieces, closet basics, costume jewellery and a bit of craft work. A famous fashion moment with a strong colour or shape is the easiest kind to copy, which is why most of these lean that way. For each one I've noted where I'd save effort and where the details really count.

Reading a Star From Across the Room
When I plan a celebrity costume, I look at a photo of the original from far away, or squint at it, and note the three things still visible. Those are what you spend your time and money on. Everything else can be close enough.
- Outline: Cher's long straight line, Diana Ross's huge curls, Ariana's high ponytail. If the shape is wrong, perfect fabric won't save it.
- Colour: Rihanna's yellow, Prince's purple, Elvis's white. One strong colour carried head to toe is often the whole clue.
- One object: the friendship bracelets, the rhinestone glasses, Diana's choker, Marilyn's beauty mark. A single detail like that confirms who you are.
The details that rarely matter are exact shoe models, the precise print and the real label. Nobody at a party checks the label, but everyone notices a wig in the wrong shape.
1. Taylor Swift Eras Tour Celebrity Costume

The Eras Tour look depends on sparkle and on the bracelets. A rhinestone bodysuit, or a sequinned tank with a matching mini skirt for more coverage, over sheer tights. Metallic ankle boots or glitter sneakers. Soft blonde waves with eyebrow-skimming bangs, using a wig if your cut is different. Red lipstick, winged liner and a few face gems near the eyes. Then stack friendship bracelets up both wrists; fans spot those before anything else, and they're easy to make the evening before with letter beads and stretch cord. A light microphone in hand, and a tasselled jacket or glittery cape over the top if the night is cold.
2. Britney Spears School Uniform Celebrity Costume

The school-uniform video look is the Britney costume I'd choose for comfort. A white button-down over a fitted tank, a grey cardigan and a knee-length black pleated skirt, with the shirt tied neatly at the waist. Grey knee socks and black loafers or flat Mary Janes. Two braided pigtails finished with fluffy pink hair ties, which are the detail that tells people which Britney you are. Rosy blush, a neutral lip and soft liner. A notebook or a fuzzy-topped pen. Plaid or pleated skirts from school-uniform suppliers are cheap and sturdy, and a longer hem makes it fine for school events.
3. Ariana Grande High Ponytail Celebrity Costume

Ariana Grande is the high ponytail first and the clothes second. An oversized pastel sweatshirt or hoodie worn as a tunic over opaque bike shorts, with thigh-high heeled boots or flat over-the-knee boots if you'd rather. For the ponytail, I set the base very high and tight with a strong elastic, then clip a long extension underneath and wrap a strand of your own hair around the elastic to hide it. Pinned like that, it doesn't sag as the night goes on. Sharp winged liner, glowing skin, a neutral gloss and a little highlighter. Small studs and a microphone. Skin-tone tights under the shorts work on colder nights without changing her outline.
4. Beyoncé Silver Cowgirl Celebrity Costume

The silver cowgirl from Beyoncé's recent tour era is pure metallic shine. A silver bodysuit, a metallic jumpsuit or a sequinned top with high-waisted silver trousers, and a rhinestone-fringed jacket for movement. Silver cowboy boots finish it; plain white boots work with a few adhesive gems on the shaft, though stick-on gems pop off where the boot creases, so I keep them above the ankle. Long honey-blonde waves under a wide silver cowboy hat. Shimmery lids, defined lashes and a glossy neutral lip. Rhinestone earrings and a glittering belt. Choose stretch metallics over stiff vinyl so you can actually sit and dance.
5. Rihanna Yellow Met Gala Celebrity Costume

Rihanna's yellow cape gown is a big DIY project with a big payoff. Start from a simple yellow maxi or a long fitted dress. Make the cape from light yellow satin or costume fabric, or a repurposed curtain, gathered onto a strip that fastens at the shoulders. Gold trim around the cape edge gives it that embroidered look with very little sewing. A sleek dark updo under a homemade gold floral headpiece. Shaped brows, warm shadow and a rich berry lip. Gold drop earrings and statement rings. Yellow or gold heels. The cape will be trodden on, so I'd make it shorter than the original and practise turning in it before the party, holding the edge up on stairs.
6. Lady Gaga Silver Futuristic Celebrity Costume

A futuristic Lady Gaga look is about hard shapes and reflection. A structured silver mini dress, metallic leggings with a sculpted top, or a silver bodysuit under an angular jacket. Mirrored adhesive shapes on the shoulders give the armour effect cheaply. Silver platform boots, but choose a wide, stable sole, since a narrow platform on a dance floor is how ankles get twisted. A platinum wig cut into a blunt bob, or styled into her famous hair bow. Metallic silver shadow, graphic black liner, a pale lip and a few face gems. Oversized geometric sunglasses are essential; check you can see through them in a dim room before committing.
7. Sabrina Carpenter Sparkly Pop Star Celebrity Costume

Sabrina Carpenter's stage look is soft curls, pastel sparkle and short hems. A pale blue or pink sequinned mini with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, with opaque tights or sparkly dance shorts underneath. White platform boots or silver ankle boots. Big blonde curls with full curtain bangs, using a long wig if you need it. The curtain bangs are the part I'd trim myself: cut them a little long, then shape them on the head, because wig fibre doesn't bounce back up the way hair does. Rosy blush high on the cheeks, fluttery lashes, shimmery lids and a glossy pink lip. A crystal heart necklace and a gem-covered microphone.
8. Billie Eilish Neon Green Celebrity Costume

Billie Eilish in her green-root era is the most comfortable costume on this list. An oversized black tee with loose black cargo shorts or wide trousers, neon green graphics added with removable fabric tape, tall black socks and chunky black sneakers. The proportion is the costume: everything should be baggy, so size up a couple of times. A black wig with vivid green roots, or temporary green colour near your parting; test it first if your hair is light, as some temporary greens tint pale hair. Matte skin, brushed brows and a soft grey shadow. Chunky silver-tone chains and rings in light costume metal, and neon press-on nails. A crossbody bag keeps your hands free.
9. Dolly Parton Rhinestone Cowgirl Celebrity Costume

Dolly Parton is country glamour, and the hair matters most. A brightly coloured western shirt with fringe, rhinestones or embroidered flowers, matching flares or a fringed knee-length skirt over opaque tights, and white cowboy boots. Tease a platinum wig high at the crown and set big curls through the lengths; doing this on a wig stand the day before gives the spray time to set properly. Pink lipstick, rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a softly shimmering lid. Oversized rhinestone earrings, a decorative belt and stacked bracelets. A toy guitar or a sparkly microphone, and a cropped white western jacket for warmth.
10. Cher Black Sequin Celebrity Costume

Cher in black sequins is long, straight and dramatic. A long-sleeved sequin jumpsuit, or a sparkly black top with high-waisted flares, and a sheer black overlay or fringed vest if you want movement with more coverage. Black platform boots give her height and are steadier than stilettos. The wig must be pin-straight, waist-length and centre-parted, so I flat-iron a heat-friendly wig on a low setting, since cheap fibre melts. Smoky eyes, bold lashes, contoured cheeks and glossy nude lips. Big silver hoops and stacked cuffs. Hold a microphone and stand with your arms out; her poses are part of the costume. Partywear sequins usually do the job without anything custom-made.
11. Marilyn Monroe White Dress Celebrity Costume

Marilyn's white halter dress is easy to read from across a room. Choose a white halter midi with a soft pleated skirt rather than a short costume version, which looks cheap next to the real thing. Neutral heels with an ankle strap and sheer tights if it's cool. A short platinum wig set in vintage curls with a side part. Arched brows, black winged liner, red lipstick and the beauty mark above the lip; that mark identifies her faster than the dress. Pearl or crystal studs and a white faux-fur wrap. For the famous pose, hold the sides of the skirt out yourself. A thin slip underneath stops a draught from doing it for you all night.
12. Audrey Hepburn Black Dress Celebrity Costume

Audrey Hepburn's black dress look is the most refined costume here, and almost all of it is real clothing. A sleeveless black midi or maxi with a clean fitted line, long black gloves, sheer black tights and low black heels or pointed flats. A high bun with a small crystal piece at the front, or a short dark wig pinned into shape. For a really full bun, I roll the hair around a doughnut-shaped foam filler, which also gives the tiara something to hold. Defined brows, delicate wings, a soft pink lip and light blush. Several strands of faux pearls, pearl studs and oversized dark sunglasses. A slim black wand can stand in for the long holder without any smoking reference.
13. Princess Diana Black Dress Celebrity Costume

Princess Diana's black off-the-shoulder dress from the mid-1990s is the costume for a smart party where a big outfit would feel wrong. A black off-the-shoulder midi, sheer tights and classic black pumps. Off-the-shoulder necklines slip, so look for a dress with elastic or boning in the neckline, or stitch clear elastic inside. A short blonde wig, feathered and side-swept. Soft defined eyes, pink blush and a muted rose lip. The choker is her signature: pearl, or a faux sapphire in the centre. Pearl earrings and a small black clutch. Upright posture and a relaxed walk do more for the likeness than any accessory.
14. Jennifer Lopez Green Jungle Dress Celebrity Costume

Jennifer Lopez's green jungle-print dress from the 2000 Grammys is famous for its plunge, and you can keep the drama with more coverage. A green tropical-print maxi with long sleeves, plus double-sided fashion tape or a matching camisole underneath to hold the neckline. A chiffon wrap dress in a similar print gets close without an exact copy. Nude platforms or gold heels under the long hem. Sleek honey-brown hair, half up, with length and shine. Bronzed skin, defined lashes, peach blush and a glossy nude lip. Gold hoops and a cuff. Light chiffon moves when you walk, so the dress looks best in full-length photos taken mid-step.
15. Madonna White Lace Pop Star Celebrity Costume

Early Madonna in white lace is layered, playful and very 1980s. A white lace dress over an opaque white slip, or a lace top with a tiered white skirt. Cropped lace gloves, white tights and low white ankle boots. A wide white belt and faux pearls of different lengths. Tousled blonde curls with a big white bow near the crown; I pin the bow through its knot into the hair, since a bow on a clip slides down tousled curls. Dark liner, shaped brows, rosy blush and a strong red lip. Rubber bracelets, and simple metal charms if you'd rather skip the cross earrings. A microphone to finish.
16. Elvis Presley White Jumpsuit Celebrity Costume

Elvis in the white jumpsuit needs decoration more than construction. A plain zip-front white jumpsuit with flared legs, then gold trim and coloured adhesive gems on the collar, belt and legs. Gems stuck to stretchy fabric fall off as it moves, so I'd glue them to the stiffer collar and belt and use sew-on gems for the legs. A short white cape lined in gold if you want the full drama. White boots with a modest heel. A black pompadour wig with long sideburns, or short hair shaped with strong-hold gel. Defined brows and a little liner. Gold sunglasses and a wide belt. Practise the lip curl and a couple of poses before you go.
17. Elton John Sequin Baseball Celebrity Costume

Elton John's sequinned baseball uniform from the mid-1970s is sporty and as sparkly as you can make it. A white baseball uniform or a matching white shirt and trousers, with silver sequins or rhinestone trim covering the top. Sequin trim sold by the metre is far quicker than individual sequins; stitch it on in rows with a long running stitch so the shirt still bends. A matching cap covered in glitter and metallic stars. White platform sneakers instead of tall boots. A short light-brown wig, or your hair tucked under the cap. Oversized rhinestone glasses are the one piece you can't skip. A touch of silver shimmer on the lids, sparkly wristbands and a decorative belt.
18. Freddie Mercury Live Aid Celebrity Costume

Freddie Mercury at Live Aid comes almost entirely from basic clothes, and that's why it works so well. A fitted white tank tucked into high-waisted light-wash jeans, a black belt with a plain metal buckle and white athletic sneakers. A studded band around one upper arm, in soft costume material rather than real metal. Short dark hair combed back, or a cropped black wig. The moustache is the finishing touch: a stick-on one is easier than drawing it, and spirit-gum alternatives made for skin hold far better than eyelash glue on a warm, sweaty face. Light foundation and natural brows. A short-handled microphone, and the raised-fist pose.
19. David Bowie Ziggy Stardust Celebrity Costume

Ziggy-era Bowie is bright colour and graphic face paint. A red, blue or metallic one-piece with flared legs and angular shoulders, or a fitted metallic top with high-waisted trousers. Red or silver platform boots with stable heels. An orange-red wig cut into a short spiky mullet with height at the crown; mullet wigs are sold pre-cut and are far easier than trimming one yourself. The red-and-blue lightning bolt down one side of the face reads best when you mark the outline lightly with a liner pencil, then fill it in with skin-safe paint. Keep the rest of the face plain. Metallic cuffs and a microphone. Light fabrics keep you comfortable for a whole night.
20. Michael Jackson Thriller Celebrity Costume

Michael Jackson's red Thriller jacket and black trousers are a costume most people guess immediately. A bright red faux-leather jacket with black trim over a black shirt and fitted black trousers. Black loafers with white socks, which are comfortable for dancing and show off the footwork. A curly black wig, shoulder length with the front swept to one side. Defined brows and a little liner, with no zombie effects. Add a single silver sequin glove from his other famous look if you like; it's technically a different era, but people love it. Faux leather gets hot fast, so wear the thinnest shirt you can underneath.
21. Prince Purple Suit Celebrity Costume

Prince in purple is rich layers and a ruffle at the neck. A fitted purple jacket over a ruffled white blouse with slim purple trousers. A thrifted blazer works if you add gold trim and decorative buttons; a longer coat is closer to the original if you can find one. Purple ankle boots with a manageable heel. A black curly wig with the volume swept to one side. Soft smoky eyes, groomed brows and a hint of purple shimmer. A lace cuff, a brooch and a few silver rings. A light toy guitar makes the prop. Purple fabrics vary wildly in tone, so I carry the blazer when shopping for the trousers to match them in daylight.
22. Harry Styles Colorful Suit Celebrity Costume

Harry Styles is the costume I'd suggest to anyone who wants something they'll wear again. A matching jacket and flared trousers in pink, green, orange or a bold geometric print, a silky button-down underneath with the top buttons open, and white heeled boots or platform loafers. Loose waves in short brown hair, or a textured wig. Fresh skin and a bit of shimmer around the eyes. Faux pearls, colourful rings and a feather boa you can take off in a crowd. Feather boas shed constantly, so give yours a good shake outdoors before the party, and you'll leave far fewer feathers on everyone's sofa. A microphone and painted nails finish it.
23. Chappell Roan Pink Pony Celebrity Costume

Chappell Roan is loudly pink, with a camp drag-style face. A hot pink western shirt or a structured corset top over an opaque base, matching flares or a fringed midi skirt over pink tights, and white or pink cowboy boots with removable rhinestones. Long red curls; a bright copper wig is the easy route. Her makeup is the costume: pale skin, blue shadow up to the brow, painted cheek hearts, rosy blush and glossy red lips. Build it in thin layers and set each one with powder so it doesn't slide by midnight. A pink cowboy hat, star earrings and tasselled gloves. Keep the fringe light so it swings without catching on chairs.
24. Olivia Rodrigo Purple Pop Star Celebrity Costume

Olivia Rodrigo is purple sequins with a pop-punk edge. A lavender or deep purple sequinned mini over opaque tights or dance shorts, and black lace-up boots, silver platforms or combat boots depending on the night. Long dark glossy waves with a centre part. Smudged black liner, rosy cheeks, silver shimmer and a berry gloss. Smudged liner looks deliberate when you draw a clean line first and then soften it with a small brush, rather than smudging a messy one. A black choker, fine silver necklaces and star clips in the hair. For a warmer version, a black mesh top under the dress and a cropped faux-leather jacket over it.
25. Shania Twain Leopard Print Celebrity Costume

Shania Twain's leopard print video look is the costume with the best reveal. A long-sleeved leopard top with matching flares, or a leopard jumpsuit, under a long black coat you open to show the print. Her original outfit had a leopard hood too, which you can make from a simple hood pattern and a little stretch print. Black ankle boots or low heels. Long brown waves with a centre part. Warm bronzed skin, defined lashes, soft liner and a neutral lip. Gold hoops and a simple bracelet. A microphone to finish. Stretch velvet or jersey leopard is far more forgiving than woven fabric, and it won't split when you sit down.
26. Mariah Carey Red Holiday Diva Celebrity Costume

Mariah Carey's diva glamour works without turning it into a Christmas costume. A fitted red sequin gown, a sparkly red jumpsuit or a long-sleeved red midi with a dramatic neckline that stays put. Red heels or gold ankle boots. Long honey-blonde curls, smooth and full, falling over the shoulders. Glowing skin, champagne shadow, full lashes, peach blush and a glossy nude lip. Crystal drops, a sparkly bracelet and a white faux-fur wrap for warmth. A rhinestone microphone and a small red clutch. A long red sequin gown is heavy, so I'd check the shoulder straps or sleeves can carry the weight before you buy one secondhand.
27. Celine Dion Backward White Suit Celebrity Costume

Celine Dion's backward white suit from the late-1990s Oscars is a clever pick for a fashion-minded party. A crisp white trouser suit with the jacket worn backward, but only if the cut still lets you lift your arms; most jackets won't. Otherwise, I'd fake it with a high-neck white blouse buttoned up the back under a normal white blazer. Wide-leg trousers and pointed white pumps or low block heels. Short brown hair brushed back, or a neat pixie wig, plus a white fedora worn tipped slightly if you can find one. Glowing skin, taupe shadow, defined lashes and a rose lip. Silver drop earrings and a small metallic clutch. Good posture and the all-white palette do the rest.
28. Bruno Mars Red Silk Celebrity Costume

Bruno Mars starts from a red silk shirt. Tuck it into high-waisted black trousers with a slightly cropped, tapered leg, then add polished black loafers and white socks so your footwork shows when you dance. A black or burgundy blazer on top if it's cool. Dark hair in a rounded, full shape, or a short curly wig under a black fedora. A small stick-on moustache if you want one. Dark sunglasses, a gold-tone chain and a few light rings. A vintage-style microphone. Real silk shows sweat marks under the arms within an hour of dancing, so a satin-finish polyester shirt is the more forgiving choice for a long night.
29. Miley Cyrus Silver Bodysuit Celebrity Costume

Miley Cyrus in silver is bold, monochrome and stage-ready. A long-sleeved metallic bodysuit over opaque silver leggings, or a fitted silver jumpsuit for fuller coverage. Knee-high silver boots with low heels and a cropped metallic jacket. Blonde hair swept back with volume, and darker roots visible at the crown; on a wig, a little brown eyeshadow brushed into the parting fakes regrowth surprisingly well. Smoky eyes, brushed brows, luminous skin and a neutral lip. Chunky silver earrings and stacked cuffs. A silver microphone. Stretch lamé or sequinned knit moves with you, while stiff metallic vinyl creaks and rides up every time you sit.
30. Diana Ross Gold Disco Celebrity Costume

Diana Ross in gold disco sparkle ends the list on a high note. A flowing gold sequin gown, a metallic jumpsuit or a glittering top with wide gold trousers. A light cape or fringed shawl that swings as you walk. Gold platforms, or supportive metallic flats if you'll be dancing all night. A big, rounded black curly wig. Big volume wigs flatten in storage, so I take mine out the day before, shake it hard and pick out the curls with my fingers, never a brush. Shimmering gold shadow, fluttery lashes, radiant blush and a glossy berry lip. Oversized crystal earrings and stacked gold bangles. A gold microphone, and the cape held wide for photos.
Sequins, Lamé and Rhinestones Up Close
Most of these looks share the same few showy materials, and each one has a habit worth knowing before you build with it.
Sequins scratch and shed
Sequinned fabric is rough against bare skin, especially under the arms and on the inner wrist. A thin long-sleeve layer or soft tape on the inside seams fixes it. When you cut sequinned fabric, the edge sheds sequins, so fold the edge under and stitch it or bind it with ribbon.
Lamé and metallics don't breathe
Metallic knits look great and move well, but they trap heat. Expect to be warm at an indoor party, and choose stretch metallics over stiff coated fabrics, which crease, creak and split at the seams when you sit.
Rhinestones need the right glue
Hot glue lets go of fabric that bends or gets cold, so it's fine for a hat brim or a microphone and poor for a sleeve. On clothing, I use a flexible fabric glue and let it cure overnight, or sew-on stones for anything that stretches. Stick-on gems are best kept to stiff areas like collars, belts and boot shafts.
Stars That Pair Up for Couples and Groups
Several looks on this list sit nicely together if you're dressing with friends. Elvis and Marilyn make a classic old Hollywood pair. Freddie Mercury and Ziggy-era Bowie pair up for music fans. Dolly, Shania and Beyoncé's silver cowgirl give a country trio, and Taylor, Sabrina, Olivia and Chappell suit a group of four pop fans. When you're coordinating, agree on how far each person will go with the hair and makeup, because one person in a full wig beside three without looks unfinished in photos.
One Signature Detail Does Most of the Work
A famous fashion moment gives you a plan for every part of the costume. Go after the star's strongest details, not an exact designer copy: the colour, the outline, the hair, the makeup, the shoes and one prop are usually enough for people to name them. Thrifted clothes and things you already own keep it cheaper and more comfortable. Lengthen skirts, lower heels, raise necklines and add layers until it suits your party. Then wear it the way they would, with their posture, their poses and their confidence, because that's the part nobody can buy and the part people remember.
