Three people means three opinions, three budgets and one very long group chat. A good trio theme fixes that by giving everyone a role they actually want. The 45 trios below cover cartoons, movie teams, storybook characters, DIY jokes and spooky classics, and each one lists clothes, hair, makeup, shoes and props. You can follow them closely or rebuild them from closet basics and thrift finds. When I style a group of three, the first thing I sort out is who plays whom, because that one decision settles most of the arguments that come later.

Deciding Who Plays Which Character
Most trio arguments come from one person getting stuck with the role nobody wanted. I settle the casting before anyone talks about fabric, and I use a few practical questions rather than a vote.
- Who refuses to wear a wig? Give them the character who works with their own hair.
- Who hates face paint? Give them the role with the least makeup, such as Velma rather than Scooby.
- Who is driving or walking the kids? They get the role with flat shoes and no wings, tails or panels.
- Who has the strongest feeling about a character? Let them have it; enthusiasm shows in photos.
Some trios have one anchor character that makes the other two readable, such as Dorothy, the Cat in the Hat or the marshmallow in the middle. Whoever takes that part should go furthest with the details, because if the anchor is clear, people will work out the others.
1. Powerpuff Girls Trio Costume

Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are a color code: pink with a big red bow, blue with high blonde pigtails, and green with a short black bob. Three mini dresses or matching tops and skirts work, tied together with white knee socks, black Mary Janes and simple black belts. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and each character's eye color keep the faces cartoonish. A big red bow droops unless it has a stiff center, so I make Blossom's from wired ribbon or back it with a strip of interfacing. Felt hearts or star bags are easy props.
2. Sanderson Sisters Trio Costume

The Sanderson Sisters run on jewel tones and big hair. Winifred wears green velvet with a purple cape, Sarah a flowing burgundy or mauve dress, and Mary rust pieces with a patterned apron. The wigs do most of the work: a high red one, long wavy blonde and a dark curly updo. Winifred's upswept red wig is top-heavy, so I'd pin it to a wig cap with four or five crossed bobby pins at the crown rather than trusting the combs. Smoky eyes, berry lips, striped tights and lace-up boots finish them, with a light broom, an old book or a battery candle each. Thrifted maxi skirts, corset belts and shawls make it easy.
3. Harry Potter Trio Costume

Harry, Hermione and Ron are comfortable enough for school events and trick-or-treating. The base is the same for all three: white button-downs, gray sweaters, black trousers or pleated skirts and striped burgundy-and-gold ties, with black robes on a cool night. Harry gets round glasses and messy dark hair, Hermione long textured brown hair, Ron a tousled red wig. Draw a small lightning mark at Harry's hairline. Robes trail and trip people on stairs, so I'd hem them to mid-calf. Black loafers or boots, craft-store wands, old hardcover books and house scarves for warmth.
4. Wizard Of Oz Trio Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion each have a strong silhouette. Dorothy wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white blouse, braided pigtails and red flats. The Scarecrow wears patched brown trousers, a plaid shirt, a rope belt, a floppy hat, straw-colored yarn and brown boots. The Lion wears a tan sweatsuit or faux-fur vest with a soft mane headpiece and warm brown face makeup. Real straw scratches and sheds everywhere, which is why I always use yarn or raffia for the Scarecrow's stuffing. Dorothy carries a small wicker basket; the others get a fabric diploma and a courage medal.
5. Alvin And The Chipmunks Trio Costume

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are the easiest trio here: three sweatshirts. Alvin wears red with a big yellow A, Simon a blue hoodie with round glasses, Theodore green. Pair them with black leggings, joggers or jeans and clean sneakers, add brown chipmunk ear headbands and draw small brown noses and whiskers. I cut Alvin's A from felt and stitch it on, since iron-on felt starts lifting at the corners on a fleece sweatshirt. Simon reads best with neat dark hair. Toy microphones or cardboard music notes, tan gloves and small fabric tails finish them without slowing anyone down.
6. Totally Spies Trio Costume

Sam, Clover and Alex are three fitted jumpsuits, or long-sleeve tops and pants, in green, red and yellow. The hair carries the characters: long red for Sam, a blonde bob for Clover and a sleek dark bob for Alex, and wigs make it much easier. Add white ankle boots, matching belts and simple gloves. Glossy makeup with winged liner and pink blush suits the cartoon. Bob wigs puff out at the sides unless you trim the bulk, so I thin cheap ones a little at the nape with ordinary scissors. Painted cardboard compacts make the spy gadgets, and the bold colors show up from across the room.
7. Charlie’s Angels Trio Costume

Charlie's Angels is retro glamour without any hard-to-find pieces. Dress all three in 1970s-style outfits, mixing flared pants, silky blouses, tailored jumpsuits or belted mini dresses, in cream, rust, chocolate and gold so the colors hold together. Feathered waves are the key hairstyle; I set them with large rollers and brush out, which gives that soft flick better than a flat iron. Bronzed makeup, defined lashes and glossy nude lips suit the decade. Platform boots or block heels keep you upright. Skip anything weapon-like and carry vintage sunglasses, fake ID cards or a corded-phone prop, then practice the back-to-back pose.
8. Mean Girls Plastics Trio Costume

Regina, Gretchen and Karen give you an early-2000s school look in pink. I'd give each one a different silhouette: a fitted cardigan with a skirt, a pleated mini with a tank, a satin top with tailored pants. Add small shoulder bags, delicate jewelry and pink or black heels. Regina wears long blonde waves, Gretchen glossy brunette curls, Karen soft blonde hair. Three different pinks often clash in photos, so I line all three outfits up in daylight before the party and swap out whichever one fights the others. Pink notebooks or a homemade burn-book cover are perfect props, and cropped jackets help outdoors.
9. Clueless Trio Costume

Cher, Dionne and Tai build a 1990s trio around plaid and knee socks. Cher wears a yellow plaid blazer and pleated skirt, Dionne black-and-white plaid with a statement hat, Tai a red plaid shirt with a dark skirt or relaxed jeans. Add fitted sweaters, mini backpacks, platform Mary Janes and sheer knee-highs. Sheer knee-highs slide down the calf, so I use a dab of body-safe roll-on adhesive at the top band. Cher wears long blonde hair, Dionne braids under her hat, Tai soft auburn waves, with groomed brows and glossy lips. Flip phones, fuzzy pens and notebooks make fun props.
10. Toy Story Trio Costume

Woody, Buzz and Jessie suit friends or a family of three. Woody wears a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, jeans, a cowboy hat and brown boots. Buzz wears white with green and purple felt panels, white sneakers and a soft fabric hood. Jessie wears a white Western shirt with yellow details, jeans, a red cowgirl hat, a braided red wig and boots. I build Buzz's chest panels from felt over a thin foam sheet, which keeps the shape without the stiffness of cardboard. A pull-string ring, a cardboard control panel and sheriff badges make the props, and keep everything slim enough to sit in.
11. Mario Luigi And Princess Peach Trio Costume

Mario, Luigi and Peach are bright and simple to source. Mario and Luigi wear red or green shirts under denim overalls, matching caps, white gloves, brown shoes and faux mustaches. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, a blonde wig, a gold crown, blue earrings and pink flats. Stick-on mustaches lose their grip once you start talking and eating, so I'd attach them with spirit gum or eyelash glue and bring a spare. Plush mushrooms, cardboard coins or star bags are easy props. The overalls come from everyday clothes, and the white gloves on all three tie the group together.
12. Pokémon Trainer Trio Costume

Ash, Misty and Pikachu mix two casual outfits with one animal costume. Ash wears jeans, a blue vest, fingerless gloves, a red-and-white cap and sneakers. Misty wears denim shorts, a yellow tank, red suspenders, red sneakers and an orange side ponytail. Pikachu wears a yellow hoodie and leggings with brown stripes, pointed ears, a soft tail and yellow sneakers, plus red cheek circles and a tiny black nose. Pikachu's zigzag tail flops over unless it has a spine, so I slip a strip of craft foam inside the fabric. Ash and Misty carry light red-and-white ball props, and Pikachu holds a small lightning sign.
13. Scooby-Doo Trio Costume

Scooby, Shaggy and Velma come almost entirely from the closet. Scooby wears a brown sweatsuit or onesie with floppy ears, a fabric tail, a blue collar and brown sneakers. Shaggy wears a loose green tee, brown flares, messy light-brown hair and casual shoes. Velma wears the orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red shoes and square glasses. Add freckles for Velma, light stubble shading for Shaggy and a black nose for Scooby. Brown eyeshadow pressed on with a stipple sponge makes the most natural stubble, and I'd set it with powder so it doesn't smear. Carry a magnifying glass, a mystery book and a snack box.
14. SpongeBob Patrick And Squidward Trio Costume

SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward can be wearable clothes rather than foam boxes. SpongeBob wears a yellow shirt, a white collar, a red tie, brown shorts, striped socks and black shoes. Patrick wears a pink top with green shorts covered in purple felt flowers. Squidward wears a pale aqua shirt, a brown polo, matching leggings and aqua sneakers. Use yellow, pink and blue-green face accents rather than full coverage, along with light character headbands and felt details. I'd stitch Patrick's felt flowers on loosely at the center so they don't peel when the shorts stretch. A cardboard spatula, a rock-shaped purse and a music-note folder finish the trio.
15. Mickey Minnie And Donald Trio Costume

Mickey, Minnie and Donald suit friends, siblings or parents with a child. Mickey wears a black top, red shorts, yellow shoes, white gloves and round ears. Minnie wears a red polka-dot dress, bow ears, white gloves, yellow heels and soft curls. Donald wears a blue sailor-style shirt, white pants or skirt, a red bow tie, yellow tights and yellow shoes. Mickey's ears tip back on a plain headband, so I glue a short strip of felt inside the band to grip the hair. Rosy makeup for Minnie, small black noses for the mice, and an orange bill visor for Donald instead of face paint. Matching treat bags make it trick-or-treat ready.
16. Winnie The Pooh Trio Costume

Pooh, Tigger and Piglet are made for a cold night. Pooh wears yellow leggings and a red cropped sweatshirt or tunic with round bear ears. Tigger wears an orange sweatsuit with black felt stripes, tiger ears and a soft tail. Piglet wears pale pink with darker pink stripes and tall ears. Painted noses, rosy cheeks and soft whiskers finish the faces. I'd use fleece for Tigger's stripes as well as the base; felt stripes stiffen the sweatshirt and crack along the fold lines after a wash. A honey-pot bucket, a fabric leaf or a woodland treat bag each, and ear headbands rather than masks.
17. Cat In The Hat Trio Costume

The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 is a high-energy storybook trio. The Cat wears black trousers, a black long-sleeve top, white gloves, a red bow tie, a tall red-and-white striped hat, a soft white belly panel, black ears and whiskers. The Things wear matching red shirts or jumpsuits with round numbered patches, bright blue wigs, red sneakers and rosy makeup. That tall hat wants to fall backward, so I stuff the top third with tissue and add an elastic strap under the hair. Carry a striped umbrella, a colorful book or a small cardboard kite, and keep the two Things nearly identical.
18. Three Blind Mice Trio Costume

Three Blind Mice is one of the quickest trios to pull together on the last day. Everyone dresses in gray, whether dresses, sweaters with trousers or matching sweatsuits, with gray mouse ears, fabric tails, black sunglasses and soft gray or black shoes. Draw tiny noses and whiskers with face-safe makeup and put hair in buns, ponytails or under gray caps. Dark glasses indoors really do cut your vision, so I'd choose lightly tinted lenses or keep them on top of the head between photos. Short painted cardboard canes and white gloves finish it, and matching shapes make the trio look planned.
19. Three Little Pigs Trio Costume

The Three Little Pigs share a pink base: dresses, jumpsuits or sweatshirt sets with pig ears, curled tails and pink sneakers, plus rosy cheeks, a painted snout and pink gloves. Tell them apart with a straw-colored vest on one, a faux wood-grain belt on another and a brick-print apron or scarf on the third. For the curly tail, I wrap pink pipe cleaner in fabric and stitch it to the waistband so it keeps its curl. Small cardboard signs reading straw, sticks and bricks work better than big props, and warm base layers keep the pigs comfortable outside.
20. Rock Paper Scissors Trio Costume

Rock, paper, scissors gets a laugh the moment people see it. The rock wears gray with a light crumpled-paper shell painted to look like stone. Paper wears white head to toe with blue notebook lines and a red margin on a foam-board panel. Scissors wears silver or gray with two rounded cardboard blades across the front. Metallic gray shadow and blue liner tie the makeup together, and matching sneakers keep each color solid. I make the rock shell from paper over a cheap laundry basket cut in half, which keeps it light and rigid. Small hand-symbol headbands help, and every prop should come off so you can sit.
21. S’mores Trio Costume

A graham cracker, a chocolate bar and a marshmallow make a sweet boxy trio. The graham cracker wears tan under a square panel marked with dotted lines; the chocolate wears dark brown with a segmented cardboard front; the marshmallow wears an all-white sweatsuit with a rounded foam or felt panel. Match the sneakers in tan, brown and white. I'd put the marshmallow in the middle when you stand together, because that's the order people recognize instantly. The base outfits are easy to adjust for any group, and brown and cream headbands add a bit of texture without hats.
22. Neapolitan Ice Cream Trio Costume

Strawberry, vanilla and chocolate is a pastel trio that looks neat with almost no crafting. One wears pink, one cream and one rich brown, in matching dresses, suits or tops and pants. Add sprinkle headbands, waffle-cone belts and shoes in each flavor. Strawberry wears pink waves and rosy makeup, vanilla gold highlights and champagne shimmer, chocolate warm brown eyes and gloss. I make sprinkle headbands with short lengths of colored ribbon stitched on, because glued paper sprinkles fall off and stick to everything. Cone purses or spoon props finish it, and warm sweaters adapt it for cold weather.
23. Traffic Light Trio Costume

A traffic light gives each person one bold color and needs almost no crafting. One dresses entirely in red, one in yellow, one in green, from tops to socks to sneakers. Attach a big felt circle to each shirt and add black rectangular headbands or light frames around the torso. Makeup matches the signal: red lipstick, yellow liner, green shadow. Carry small signs reading stop, wait and go if needed. A strip of reflective tape on each sleeve is cheap and helps drivers see you, which is what I'd add first for trick-or-treating. Stand in the right order for photos.
24. Sun Moon And Star Trio Costume

Sun, moon and star make a dreamy celestial trio. The sun wears a gold dress or suit, a ray headpiece, metallic makeup and gold ankle boots. The moon wears silver or pale blue with a crescent headband, pearl highlights and silver shoes. The star wears white or champagne with a pointed star crown and glitter flats. Light capes or tulle overlays add movement, and each person can carry a small wand or a battery-powered light. I'd use loose glitter only on the star's eyes and press it into a glitter glue, because loose glitter migrates onto the other two by the end of the night. Keep the face makeup decorative and light.
25. Past Present And Future Trio Costume

Past, present and future lets three people wear three eras. Past wears a modest vintage-style dress or suit with curls, gloves and lace-up shoes. Present wears a current casual outfit with sneakers and a crossbody bag. Future wears a silver jumpsuit or metallic separates with sleek hair, graphic liner and white boots. Add labeled sashes so it's clear straight away. An old-style clock, a modern planner and a clear tablet shape make the props. Present is the hardest role because it looks like no costume at all, so I give that person the brightest sash and one silver accessory that matches the others.
26. Breakfast Food Trio Costume

Bacon, eggs and toast make a funny breakfast trio. Bacon wears red with wavy white or cream stripes. Eggs wears white with a big yellow felt circle centered on the front. Toast wears tan with a brown crust border around a light front panel. Matching headbands, simple makeup and sneakers finish each one. Rounded foam or felt panels move better than stiff boxes, and I'd sew the bacon stripes from felt in gentle waves rather than painting them, since paint cracks when a sweatshirt stretches. A cardboard spatula or a breakfast tray adds to it, and sweatshirts and joggers keep it warm.
27. Bee Butterfly And Ladybug Trio Costume

A bee, a butterfly and a ladybug make a garden trio with three distinct bugs. The bee wears black-and-yellow stripes, sheer wings, antennae, black tights and ankle boots. The butterfly wears a bright dress or jumpsuit with patterned wings, a flower headband and flats. The ladybug wears red with black spots, rounded wings, antennae and black sneakers. Wire wings snag on each other when three people stand close, so I'd pick wings that sit flat against the back and keep the butterfly's the largest. Tiny painted dots near the eyes, flower baskets and black shoes on all three connect you.
28. Circus Performer Trio Costume

A ringmaster, a clown and a strongman make a lively circus trio without heavy makeup. The ringmaster wears a red tailcoat, black trousers, a gold-trimmed hat, white gloves and tall black boots. The clown wears colorful suspenders, patterned pants, a ruffled collar, bright sneakers and cheerful face details. The strongman wears a striped top, high-waisted shorts or trousers, a wide belt, a curled mustache and lace-up boots. Thrifted red blazers are easy to find, and I add gold trim with a fabric glue plus a few hand stitches at the ends so it doesn't lift. A light hoop, juggling balls and a foam barbell are safe props in red, gold, black and white.
29. Pirate Crew Trio Costume

A pirate crew looks best when the clothes seem collected over time. Start with striped shirts, layered vests, cropped trousers and worn-looking boots. The captain gets a burgundy coat and wide-brim hat, the second pirate a cream blouse with a brown corset belt, the third a black vest and patterned headscarf. Loose waves, braids or messy curls, smudged liner and bronzed cheeks suit everyone. I age new fabric by rubbing it with a damp tea bag and fraying the hems with a stiff brush. Treasure maps, gold coins, rope bracelets and canvas bags instead of weapons, and shared red and brown accents link the crew.
30. Glam Vampire Trio Costume

A glam vampire trio is drama in eveningwear. One wears black velvet, one deep burgundy, one dark purple, in long dresses, tailored suits or high-neck blouses with fitted pants. Add sweeping capes, silver jewelry, lace gloves and black boots, with glossy waves, slicked-back hair or a structured updo. Makeup is pale foundation, smoky eyes, defined brows, berry lips and small pointed teeth. Cheap fangs make it hard to talk, so I'd choose the small fitted kind that hugs only the canines. A vintage mirror, a dark rose or an empty ornate frame make good props, and the fabrics tie the three looks together.
31. Classic Witch Trio Costume

Three classic witches start from black and split the accent colors. One wears a black dress with purple tights and a velvet cape; another black trousers, an orange blouse and a striped shawl; the third a green skirt, a fitted black top and a patterned vest. Add pointed hats, lace-up boots, soft smoky makeup and colored ribbon woven into the hair. Light brooms, mini cauldrons as treat buckets and potion-bottle purses are fun accessories. Black fabrics vary a lot in shade, so I check them together in daylight; a faded black next to a deep one looks accidental. Keep it storybook and leave out ceremonial details.
32. Friendly Ghost Trio Costume

A friendly ghost trio can look stylish without sheets. Everyone wears flowing white, from maxi dresses to loose suits or layered tunics with wide-leg pants, plus sheer white capes, pale wigs or temporary white hair color and white shoes. Pearly makeup, silver highlighter, soft gray shadow and pale lips give an airy finish. Carry small battery lanterns, white bouquets or clear umbrellas, and tell the ghosts apart with pearl, silver and icy-blue accessories. All-white outfits show every drop of red punch, so I'd keep a stain pen in someone's pocket. Light fabrics move well in photos, and the look stays family-friendly.
33. Skeleton Trio Costume

A skeleton trio keeps the black-and-white palette and changes the silhouettes. One wears a fitted jumpsuit, one a dress with tights, one a sweatshirt with joggers. Apply white bones with felt, fabric paint or removable tape, and add black boots or sneakers and gloves with finger bones. Keep the face makeup to simple monochrome around the eyes, nose and cheekbones. I'd draw the bone placement in chalk first while each person is wearing the garment, since ribs drawn flat on a table end up under the arms. Sleek ponytails or black hats, and white bouquets or bone-print treat bags.
34. Mummy Trio Costume

Mummies can be built over comfortable neutral clothes rather than wrapped tightly. Start with cream, beige or light gray shirts and pants and attach loose strips of gauze or torn cotton, leaving room at the arms, knees and ankles. Cover the shoes partly with strips too. Softly smudged brown and gray eyes, pale foundation and teased hair suit it. Each person wears a slightly different neutral for depth. I tack the strips down with a few stitches every hand's width, because loose wrapping unravels and someone ends up trailing a strip on the floor. Scroll props or gold jewelry add interest.
35. Alien Trio Costume

Three aliens make a colorful group without scary masks. Everyone wears silver jumpsuits, metallic skirts with fitted tops or white outfits with reflective trim, and each picks a neon accent such as lime, purple or electric blue. Add antenna headbands, iridescent makeup, metallic lipstick and sleek ponytails or silver wigs. Metallic lipstick dries the lips quickly, so I'd put a balm on underneath and blot. White platform sneakers or metallic boots keep it modern. Clear bags, glowing orbs or cardboard control panels make props, and a few face gems at the temples are enough sparkle.
36. Superhero Trio Costume

Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman read through color blocking. Wonder Woman wears a red top, a blue skirt or pants, gold accessories, dark waves and red boots. Superman wears a blue base, a red cape, styled dark hair and red shoes. Batman wears black with a fabric cape, a soft-eared mask and sturdy boots. Red lipstick for Wonder Woman and light contour for the others keep the faces clean. Use foam logos and fabric cuffs instead of hard pieces. Capes pull on the neck all night, so I attach them at the shoulders with snaps instead of tying them at the throat.
37. Gotham Villains Trio Costume

Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman give you three clear palettes. Harley wears a red-and-black jacket with shorts or pants, pigtails, smudged eyes and lace-up boots. Ivy wears a green dress or jumpsuit with leafy trim, flowing red hair, green shadow and green heels. Catwoman wears a fitted black jumpsuit, a cat-ear headpiece, a sleek ponytail, black liner and ankle boots. Leave weapons at home and carry themed bags, playing cards, faux vines or a jewel clutch. Ivy's leaves are the part I'd sew rather than glue, because glued leaves fall off as the fabric moves. Stretch fabrics keep all three comfortable.
38. Star Wars Hero Trio Costume

Luke, Leia and Han are made from practical neutrals. Luke wears a cream tunic over tan pants with a brown belt and boots. Leia wears a long white dress, or white trousers and a high-neck top, with silver shoes and her side buns. Han wears a cream shirt, a black vest, dark pants and tall brown boots. Leia's buns are easiest with two hair donuts and a long braid wrapped around each, or a pair of clip-on buns if the hair is short. Natural makeup, robot-shaped bags, map folders or glowing wristbands instead of battle props, and the shared palette ties the trio together.
39. Jurassic Park Trio Costume

Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm come from everyday safari and 1990s clothes. Alan wears a denim shirt, khaki pants, a red bandana, a brown hat and hiking boots. Ellie wears a coral or pink button-down, khaki shorts, a tied chambray shirt, blonde waves and sturdy boots. Ian wears all black with a partly open button-down, dark sunglasses and styled curls. Thrift stores are full of khaki and denim, so this is one of the cheapest trios I know of. Natural, windswept makeup, park maps, toy binoculars, notebooks and small dinosaur plushies finish it, and it's comfortable for long outdoor events.
40. Minions Trio Costume

A Minions trio is cheerful, works for anyone and comes from matching basics. All three wear yellow long-sleeve shirts, denim overalls, black gloves and black boots or sneakers, with yellow beanies or bald caps and a few black yarn hairs. Round silver goggles go on each, with one-eye and two-eye versions for variety. Goggles fog up fast in a warm room, so I'd skip the lenses or use goggle frames with the plastic popped out. Paint small smiles or eyebrows with face-safe makeup. A teddy bear, a banana bag or a cardboard sign sets each one apart, and rolled cuffs and striped socks finish them.
41. Inside Out Emotion Trio Costume

Joy, Sadness and Anger give three strong colors and big expressions. Joy wears a yellow dress with blue details, a short blue wig, bright makeup and yellow flats. Sadness wears a pale-blue sweater, dark blue pants, round glasses, a blue bob and navy shoes. Anger wears a white shirt, a red tie, brown trousers, red face accents and dark dress shoes. Joy's pixie wig is the one people notice, so I'd buy a lighter shade of blue than you think, since dark blue looks nearly black indoors. Emotion cards, memory-orb ornaments or color-coded bags make props, and exaggerated friendly faces win in photos.
42. Shrek Fiona And Donkey Trio Costume

Shrek, Fiona and Donkey are a funny fairytale trio with comfortable layers. Shrek wears a cream tunic, a brown vest, plaid trousers, brown boots and a green ear headband. Fiona wears a long green medieval-style dress, a braided red wig, a small crown and flat boots. Donkey wears a gray sweatsuit with a lighter belly panel, tall ears, a black mane, a tail and gray sneakers. Use soft green accents for Shrek and Fiona rather than full green faces, which transfer onto everything, plus freckles for Fiona and a painted nose for Donkey. I stiffen Donkey's tall ears with a strip of plastic canvas inside. An onion-shaped bag and a storybook finish it.
43. Alice Mad Hatter And White Rabbit Trio Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit are full of color and texture. Alice wears a blue dress with a white apron, a black headband, blonde waves, white tights and black Mary Janes. The Hatter wears a bright tailcoat, a patterned vest, cropped trousers, colorful socks, a tall hat, curly hair and lace-up shoes. The Rabbit wears white under a red vest, with ears, a bow tie and white boots. The Hatter's tall hat usually needs a strap or pins; I put a small comb inside the brim that tucks into the hair. A teacup, a big pocket watch and a card-print purse, and red and blue details link the three.
44. Little Red Riding Hood Trio Costume

Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf and Grandma make a whole fairytale scene. Red wears a white blouse, a dark skirt or simple dress, a bright red cape, braids and brown ankle boots. The Wolf wears gray with faux-fur ears, a soft tail, light whisker makeup and gray sneakers. Grandma wears a floral nightgown over leggings, a lace-trimmed bonnet, round glasses, a gray wig and slippers with outdoor soles. That last detail matters; I'd never send anyone out in indoor slippers on wet pavement. A wicker basket, a glasses case and a small storybook make the props, keep the Wolf playful, and repeat small red touches across all three.
45. Addams Family Trio Costume

Wednesday, Morticia and Gomez end the list with polished black. Wednesday wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, braided pigtails, pale makeup, black tights and Mary Janes. Morticia wears a long fitted black gown with flowing sleeves, sleek center-parted hair, smoky eyes and berry lips. Gomez wears a dark pinstripe suit, a white shirt, a bow tie and polished shoes. Morticia's gown is hard to walk in when it's tight to the floor, so I'd look for one with a back slit or a soft knit. Carry a black bouquet, a vintage frame or a small hand prop, and keep it refined.
Front Panels You Can Still Sit Down In
Traffic lights, s'mores, breakfast food and rock paper scissors all depend on a panel worn on the front. Panels are where DIY trios go wrong: they're too big, too heavy or too stiff to sit in.
- Foam board is lighter and stiffer than cardboard, and it doesn't soften as quickly in damp air.
- Keep the panel no wider than your shoulders and no lower than mid-thigh, so you can sit and fit through doors.
- Hang it from wide ribbon or elastic straps that cross at the back. String over the neck digs in within an hour.
- Round every corner and tape the edges. Sharp board corners catch on other people in a crowd.
- Make it removable. Two snaps or a pair of safety pins on each strap lets you take it off to eat.
Lining Three People Up for a Photo That Reads
A trio costume is half about the group photo, and the order you stand in changes whether strangers get it. Put the anchor character in the middle, and stand in the order people expect, such as red, yellow, green, or cracker, marshmallow, chocolate.
Height matters too. If the tallest person stands at one end, the photo tilts, so I put the tallest in the middle or give the shortest person the tallest hat. Take one test shot from across the room before the party starts. If you can't tell who's who in that small photo, add to the hair or the color, not to the props.
Three Roles, One Thread Running Through Them
A trio works when all three people get a role others can name and the group still looks like one idea. You've got pop-culture teams, cartoons, spooky classics, fairytales and DIY jokes to pick from. Think about budget, the weather, comfort and how much crafting each person really wants to do. Then repeat one thing across all three, whether a color, a fabric, a makeup detail or an accessory. I'd also do a quick try-on together a week ahead, because that's when you find out that one person's wig is itchy or another's shoes hurt. Light props and good shoes do the rest.
