Blonde hair does half the work on a lot of Halloween characters, and it doesn't matter whether it grew that way, came from a salon or arrived in a wig box. What turns it into a character is the cut and styling: Sandy's curls, Cher's straight centre part, Harley's pigtails. The fifty looks below run from film and pop-star costumes to fairy tales, cartoons, witches and a few originals, and most can be pulled from your closet, a thrift store or a craft shop. For each one I've noted the hair, the pieces that make the character read and where I'd make it more comfortable for a long night.

Wig, Spray or Your Own Blonde?
Most characters below depend on a particular shade and a particular cut, so I sort the hair out before buying any clothes. There are really three routes, and they suit different people.
Wearing a costume wig
- If the character has a sharp centre part, like Cher or She-Ra, look for a wig with a lace or skin-coloured parting. A plain wefted top shows the mesh.
- Cheap synthetic fibre is shiny. A light dusting of dry shampoo brushed through takes the plastic sheen down.
- Wear a wig cap close to your skin tone, and pin through the wig into the cap at the temples and the nape so it can't shift.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons, ovens and candles. Most frizz or melt with heat unless the label says heat-resistant.
Working with hair that's already light
If your hair is already blonde, styling does more than any product. Hot rollers for Sandy and Marilyn, a flat iron for Cher and She-Ra, a tight gelled ponytail for Britney. Clip-in extensions in a close shade fill out thin braids and pigtails. I wouldn't bleach for one night out; a wig is kinder to your hair and comes off when the party ends.
1. Pink Cowgirl Barbie Costume

Pink cowgirl Barbie is mostly a colour exercise: the more of the outfit sits in one bright pink, the faster people get it. A fitted pink vest over a white top with matching flares or an A-line skirt does the job. Loose, polished waves and soft pink makeup with a glossy lip keep her doll-like. The white cowboy hat is the piece I wouldn't skip, then a bandana, star earrings and a little pink bag. Western boots with a low heel walk better than the tall fashion kind. If you want rhinestones on the vest and hat, use fabric glue and let it dry overnight; hot glue on a felt brim tends to peel.
2. Elle Woods Pink Suit Costume

Elle Woods lives in pink, so the suit is the costume. A fitted pink blazer with a matching skirt or trousers, plus a pale camisole underneath, gives you the courtroom look. Her hair is bouncy and side-parted, which you can get with a round brush or a shoulder-length golden wig. Rosy blush, neutral shadow, mascara and pink lipstick keep the face fresh. The stuffed chihuahua under one arm is the detail that makes strangers say her name, so I'd put that ahead of the faux law book. Pink pumps are classic, but flats or clean sneakers are wiser if you'll stand all night. Add pearl studs and tinted sunglasses, and almost every piece goes straight back into your wardrobe.
3. Cher Horowitz Plaid Costume

Cher's yellow plaid set is one of those outfits people recognise from across a room. Look for a yellow plaid blazer and skirt over a white fitted top; if a matching set won't turn up, two similar plaids work, as long as the yellows are close in tone. White knee socks or opaque tights and black Mary Janes or loafers ground it. Her hair is long, straight and dead centre-parted, so run a flat iron through it even if yours is already straight. Peach blush, brown mascara and a glossy neutral lip. A mini backpack and a chunky old phone sell the 1990s, and it suits school events and group costumes too.
4. Regina George Bunny Costume

Regina George's bunny ears are the whole joke, so this version keeps them and covers everything else up. A fitted black top with a knee-length skirt, skort or tailored trousers, black tights and sleek ankle boots make a simple base. Her hair is straight, layered and side-parted. Soft smoky eyes, pink blush and a glossy neutral lip are plenty. Pick bunny ears on a padded band, add a small bow tie, and sew the tail on rather than pinning it; pinned tails drop off the first time you sit down. A small black handbag and you're ready, and the layers adjust easily if the night turns cold.
5. Sandy From Grease Costume

Sandy's finale look is black, tight and curly. Stretch fabrics matter here: an off-the-shoulder top and high-waisted black trousers that move with you, rather than real leather you'll be peeling off by midnight. Add a wide black belt and a cropped faux-leather jacket. The curls are what sells it, so set them with hot rollers or a curling wand and brush them out into full waves, then lift them into a high ponytail or half-up style. Black liner, warm blush and red lipstick give the retro face. Red slip-on heels are accurate, though black flats are kinder. Gold hoops and a compact, and every piece can be worn again.
6. Marilyn Monroe White Dress Costume

The white halter dress is the Marilyn Monroe costume, so spend your money there. Choose a white halter midi with a softly pleated skirt, and lift your arms in the fitting room to make sure the neckline stays put. Nude tights add coverage, with white or metallic low heels. A short platinum curled wig gets you closest; if your own hair is blonde, pin curls set overnight can fake the bob. Black liner, arched brows, a luminous base and classic red lipstick do the face. Crystal earrings, a sparkly bracelet and a small silver clutch are enough. I'd skip the famous windblown pose and let the dress carry it.
7. Taylor Swift Stage Costume

For a Taylor Swift stage look, the friendship bracelets are what turn a sparkly dress into her. Wear a sequined mini dress over opaque tights or a glittery top with a skater skirt, with a light faux-fur jacket for warmth. Soft waves with straight bangs, or a natural-looking wig. Black winged liner, shimmery shadow and bold red lips. Make a stack of bead bracelets for both wrists and bring extras to trade, which is half the fun. A toy microphone and silver ankle boots or rhinestone sneakers finish the stage set. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms, so I line the armholes with soft tape if you'll be dancing. A group of friends can each take a different era.
8. Sabrina Carpenter Pop Star Costume

A Sabrina Carpenter-inspired look is pastel, retro and bouncy. Start with a pastel corset-style top over a fitted undershirt, a skater skirt or high-waisted shorts and opaque tights, then a cropped sparkly jacket. Long waves with curtain bangs are the signature, and they need a round brush and some setting spray to hold their shape through a party. Rosy makeup, highlighted cheeks, fluttery lashes and a glossy pink lip suit her. A heart-shaped mic and small crystal earrings set the stage theme. If you choose platforms, pick a wide, stable sole, or swap them for embellished sneakers when you'll be standing for hours.
9. Britney Spears Red Jumpsuit Costume

Britney's red catsuit is a one-piece costume, which is about as easy as it gets. A long-sleeved red catsuit, a fitted coverall or a matching red top and pants all work, as long as the reds match; two slightly different reds look like a mistake. Add a slim black belt if you want shape. Her hair is a sleek high ponytail with two face-framing pieces, and a little gel at the hairline keeps it sleek. Silver shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and a nude lip. A light headset mic and a metallic cuff are the pop-star details. Red ankle boots or red sneakers, with a smooth, close-fitting tank underneath for coverage.
10. Lady Gaga Silver Stage Costume

Lady Gaga costumes are about the shoulders and the hair. Start with a silver structured top and high-waisted metallic pants, a pleated skirt or leggings. The sharp-shouldered jacket can come from silver fabric or cardboard panels wrapped in metallic tape; I pad any cardboard edge that sits near the neck, because it rubs. Platinum hair can go into her hair bow, a sleek bob or a sculpted ponytail. Graphic liner, silver shadow and a few skin-safe face gems around the eyes. Platform boots with a sturdy sole, a chrome microphone, angular sunglasses and fingerless silver gloves. Choose separates that still let you sit down.
11. Dolly Parton Country Singer Costume

Dolly Parton is big hair, rhinestones and a warm smile. Start with a colourful western shirt or sparkly jacket and white flares or a fringed midi skirt. For the height, a voluminous curled wig is easiest; if you'd rather use your own hair, tease it gently at the crown over a little removable padding. Defined lashes, rosy cheeks and bright pink lipstick. Rhinestone earrings, a decorative belt and a lightweight toy guitar fill in the country-stage details. White cowboy boots are ideal, though embellished ankle boots will do. Fringe tangles, so comb it through before you go out, and stitch rather than glue any rhinestones you'll be sitting on.
12. Glinda Pink Witch Costume

Glinda is the bright answer to the black witch costume. A pale pink floor-length gown with puff sleeves, sparkly overlays or soft tulle layers is the starting point. A crinoline looks right but fills a whole doorway, so wear one only if the party has space. Polished curls or a half-up style sit under a tall silver crown, and I sew a small comb into the base of that crown so it grips the hair. Pastel pink shadow, pearly highlight and a rosy lip. A light silver star wand and a delicate crystal necklace. Silver ballet flats beat heels under a long skirt, and she fits a storybook group nicely.
13. Cinderella Blue Gown Costume

Cinderella reads from her icy blue and her gloves. A pale blue ball gown is ideal, but a full midi dress or a fitted top with a layered tulle skirt works too. Sheer elbow gloves and a sparkly choker carry the formal look. Put the hair in a neat updo with a blue headband and leave a few curled pieces loose. Cool-toned shadow, pink blush and a soft berry lip. A single glittery shoe is the prop I'd carry, since it's light and tells the story. Clear flats or silver ballet shoes are safer than glass-look heels, which are usually hard plastic and slippery.
14. Rapunzel Purple Dress Costume

The braid is Rapunzel, so plan the hair first. Wear your own blonde hair in one long braid and add clip-in extensions if it needs length; start the extension under the top section and braid over it so the join hides. Weave pink, yellow and purple silk flowers through it. For the dress, a lavender lace-up with puff sleeves, or a purple corset vest over a pale blouse and maxi skirt. Keep makeup light with peach blush, a little shimmer and a pink lip. A small paper lantern or a plush chameleon is lighter than a frying pan. Brown flats or soft ankle boots, and thermal leggings under the skirt if you'll be outside.
15. Tinker Bell Green Fairy Costume

A green dress, a high bun and wings, and Tinker Bell is there. Start with a green skater dress, with a fitted long-sleeve top underneath if it's cold. Add pale green tights and small translucent wings on soft elastic straps; small is the key word, because big wings knock drinks over. Pull the hair into a high bun tied with a thin green ribbon. Golden shadow, rosy cheeks and a pink lip, with cosmetic shimmer if you like. Loose glitter gets everywhere, so I fill a little fabric pouch with gold paper stars instead. Green flats with white pom-poms on the toes finish her.
16. Alice In Wonderland Blue Dress Costume

Alice is one of the easiest storybook costumes to thrift. Find a knee-length blue fit-and-flare dress and put a crisp white apron over it; an apron cut from an old white cotton shirt works fine if you can sew a straight hem. White tights or knee socks, depending on the weather. Straight hair under a black ribbon headband is the classic version. Rosy cheeks, mascara and pale pink lips keep it young. A teacup, oversized paper playing cards or a plush white rabbit can be the prop. Black Mary Jane flats are the most recognisable shoes and comfortable too. It suits a solo costume or a whole Wonderland group.
17. Elsa Ice Queen Costume

Elsa needs that loose side braid more than she needs an exact dress. Braid platinum or blonde hair loosely over one shoulder and tug small sections out for softness. Then add a pale blue gown with sheer sleeves, a sparkly bodice and a light cape, or a simpler blue top with a long glittered skirt. Silver-blue shadow, cool pink blush and pearl highlight give the frosted face. Snowflake earrings and a clear acrylic snowflake ornament to hold. Silver flats or pale blue ankle boots go underneath. For an outdoor night, thermal leggings and a fitted shirt under the gown keep you warm without changing how it looks.
18. Princess Peach Pink Gown Costume

Princess Peach is pink, blonde and crowned. A full pink gown or a puff-sleeve midi dress works; if you sew, a darker pink overskirt panel is what makes it look like her rather than a generic princess. Long hair loose with curled ends, or a golden wig with side-swept bangs. Bright blush, defined lashes and pink lipstick. Her crown gets blue and red gems, with white gloves and round blue earrings. A plush mushroom or star bag keeps your hands mostly free. Pink low heels, flats or platform sneakers go underneath. She's strong solo and even better next to a Mario group.
19. Princess Zelda Fantasy Costume

Zelda's costume looks complicated, but it's really layers. Put a white maxi dress or tunic under a fitted purple vest, with a gold belt and a front apron panel. I'd choose cotton or another breathable fabric, because all those layers get warm indoors. Part the blonde hair in the centre with two narrow braids framing the face. Soft lavender shadow, peach blush and natural lips. Pointed ears, a jeweled tiara and a triangle emblem cut from gold craft foam set the fantasy. Brown or gold ankle boots you can walk in. Leave the sword at home; the colours and tiara already tell people who she is.
20. Astrid Viking Costume

Astrid's look is practical, so it should feel practical too. A striped blue tunic or fitted long-sleeve top, a brown faux-leather vest and a textured knee-length skirt go over dark leggings. A thick side braid with a few loose pieces around the face. Keep makeup outdoorsy: defined brows, muted shadow, rosy cheeks. Add a studded headband, faux-fur shoulder trim and a small plush dragon. Brown lace-up boots. Foam spikes on the skirt or shoulders look right, but I round every point with scissors and seal it with a little glue so it doesn't jab anyone in a crowd.
21. Harley Quinn Pigtail Costume

Harley Quinn's pigtails with pink and blue tips are the instant giveaway. Wear a red and blue bomber over a simple top, with shorts over opaque tights or split-colour pants for more coverage. Split the hair into two high pigtails and colour the ends with temporary spray or chalk; on very light or bleached hair, test a hidden strand first, because some pinks and blues stain. Mismatched pink and blue shadow, bold liner and red lips, no fake wounds needed. Lace-up sneakers, a studded belt and fingerless gloves. I'd carry oversized foam playing cards instead of anything bat-shaped, so nobody at the door has to wonder.
22. Luna Lovegood School Costume

Luna Lovegood is the costume for anyone who loves an odd accessory. The base is a school uniform: white collared shirt, striped tie, dark pleated skirt and a gray cardigan or black robe, with opaque tights and sturdy loafers. Wear long blonde hair in loose, slightly messy waves, and don't over-style it. Natural makeup with pale pink blush and a hint of silver shimmer. Then the fun part: radish earrings, odd pink glasses and a folded-paper copy of her favourite magazine. Radish earrings are easy to make from red felt with a green felt top on an earring hook. A small stuffed creature or a wooden-look pencil beats any wand-shaped stick for a long day.
23. Daphne Blake Purple Costume

Daphne is purple, green and well brushed. A long-sleeved purple dress, pink or lavender opaque tights, a bright green scarf at the neck and purple flats or low boots. The hair is smooth and voluminous with curled ends, and a shoulder-length wig is fine. A purple headband keeps it neat; I slide a couple of bobby pins under the band so it doesn't creep forward. Lilac shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and rosy lips. A magnifying glass and a small notebook for the mystery. Everything is light, so she's an easy pick for a Scooby group, a school event or a walk around the neighbourhood.
24. Buffy Vampire Slayer Costume

Buffy is a 1990s wardrobe costume, so thrift it rather than buying a kit. A fitted red or black top, dark straight-leg trousers and a cropped faux-leather jacket, or a slip midi dress over a fitted tee for her early seasons. A shoulder-length blowout or loose waves. Brown liner, peach blush and a neutral lip. A small crossbody bag, a silver cross necklace and a battered library book make the reference. Black ankle boots. I'd keep the stake out of it; the jacket, necklace and hair are enough, and everything goes back in your closet afterwards.
25. Veronica Mars Detective Costume

Veronica Mars is the quiet one on this list, which is why I like her for a casual party. A fitted striped top, dark jeans and an olive, brown or navy utility jacket. Hair in a layered shoulder-length bob, or longer hair in a low ponytail. Mascara, rosy blush and tinted balm. The props carry the character: a camera on a strap, a spiral notebook and a homemade detective ID card. A canvas messenger bag holds your phone and keys as well. Ankle boots or clean sneakers. It looks like a good everyday outfit until people notice the camera.
26. Beth Dutton Western Costume

Beth Dutton dresses sharp for a ranch, and the coat is the piece to find. A printed midi dress under a tan coat, or a satin blouse with dark jeans and a tailored ranch jacket. Loose, slightly undone waves with a side part, never too neat. Smoky brown shadow, black mascara, bronzed cheeks and a muted rose lip. A wide leather-look belt, a structured bag and big sunglasses. Brown cowboy boots give more support than her heels would. A folder labelled with a made-up ranch name is a nice touch for fans. Lose the props afterwards and you have a good autumn outfit.
27. Pamela Anderson Lifeguard Costume

The red lifeguard swimsuit is famous, but you don't need to wear one to a Halloween party. A red athletic tank or fitted tee with red running shorts over opaque tights, or red track pants, keeps the colour block. Add a light red zip jacket for cool nights. Long, beachy waves with a little texture spray, bronzed cheeks, mascara and a nude-pink lip. A whistle on a cord, a red visor and a bag shaped like a rescue float set the theme. White running shoes instead of bare feet. It's one of the easiest costumes on this list to walk in all night.
28. Sharpay Evans Pink Costume

Sharpay is pink from head to toe, and nothing about her is subtle. A sequined pink cardigan or cropped jacket over a satin top and a matching A-line skirt, or pink tailored trousers if it's cold. Polished curls with one side pinned back by a rhinestone clip. Shimmery pink shadow, rosy blush, defined lashes and glossy lips. A glitter microphone or a star-shaped audition folder, big sunglasses, crystal earrings and a small metallic bag. Matching pinks matter: I lay every pink piece together in daylight before the party, because pinks that clash look accidental. Flats or low block heels, and she slots right into a musical-theatre group.
29. Hannah Montana Pop Star Costume

Hannah Montana is the long blonde wig with blunt bangs, so get that right first and trim the fringe to sit just at the brows. Cut a wig fringe with sharp scissors in small vertical snips, never one straight chop, or it looks like a ruler line. Then a sequined vest or cropped jacket over a bright top, with dark jeans, leggings or a tiered skirt and tights. Lavender shadow, pink blush, mascara and glossy lips. A toy mic, a metallic scarf, chunky bracelets and star earrings. Silver cowboy boots or glitter sneakers. Denim plus sparkle is the late-2000s formula, and it's easy to thrift.
30. Elle Driver Yellow Suit Costume

Elle Driver is a villain costume that needs no blood at all. The white eye patch with its red cross is the detail, and it's easy to make: draw the cross on a plain patch with fabric paint and let it dry fully. Wear a bright yellow pantsuit, a jumpsuit or a blazer and straight trousers over a black top. Smooth shoulder-length blonde hair with lightly curled ends. Defined black liner on the visible eye, neutral shadow and red lipstick. An eye patch throws off depth perception, so I'd lift it on stairs and never wear it to drive. Carry a small black case or notebook, and wear black ankle boots for stability.
31. Storm White Blonde Costume

Storm's white hair is the starting point, so buy a good long white wig and check it under a warm lamp first; cheap white fibres can look yellow indoors. A fitted white or silver jumpsuit, or a long-sleeve top with matching pants. Add a flowing white cape attached firmly at the shoulders and hemmed so it clears the floor. A slightly deeper hem fold gives the cape weight, so it swings instead of flapping. Silver shadow, strong liner and pearly highlight. Skip the white contact lenses; ordinary eye makeup is safer and you'll see better. Silver cuffs, a metallic belt, lightning earrings and white ankle boots or silver sneakers.
32. Supergirl Blue And Red Costume

Supergirl is a blue top, a red skirt and a cape, and the emblem is the one thing to get right. Cut the red and yellow chest shield from felt and stitch it on; felt glued to stretch fabric peels as soon as the shirt stretches. Pair the long-sleeved blue shirt with a red skater skirt, opaque tights and a red cape fastened firmly. Soft, brushed waves with a neat side part. Rosy cheeks, mascara and red-pink lips. A slim gold belt and small emblem earrings. Red knee boots give the classic line, but red ankle boots or high-tops are easier on long nights.
33. She-Ra Warrior Princess Costume

She-Ra is white, gold and red, with very long straight hair. A white fit-and-flare dress over gold leggings, or a white tunic with a knee-length skirt, then a red cape and a wide gold belt. Craft foam makes a good belt and winged headband: it bends to the body and takes gold paint well if you seal it first. Long, straight, centre-parted hair goes under that headband. Gold shadow, soft lashes and rosy lips. Gold wrist cuffs and a red jewel necklace add detail, with white boots under removable gold covers. The sword can stay at home; the crown, cape and colours already name her.
34. Sailor Moon Blonde Costume

Sailor Moon's buns with long tails are the hardest and most important part. Make two high buns, then clip extensions under each one so the tails fall well past the shoulders; a wig made for the style is easier if your hair is short. The uniform is a white top with a blue sailor collar and red bow, a pleated blue skirt and white tights. Blue shadow, winged liner, pink blush and rosy lips. A gold forehead band, crescent earrings, white gloves and a small moon bag. Red boots, knee-high or ankle. Keep every accessory soft and light for crowded events.
35. Bubbles Powerpuff Costume

Bubbles is built for a trio with her two sisters. A bright blue A-line dress with a wide black band at the waist is the base, and a black ribbon belt on a plain blue dress fakes the stripe. White tights and black Mary Janes. Two high pigtails tied with blue elastics, kept short and bouncy rather than long. Make the eyes look big with white shimmer on the lids, black mascara and a little blue liner, plus pink blush. Her plush octopus is the prop fans will spot, or carry a blue heart bag. Clean blocks of colour make her easy for any age to wear.
36. Glam Blonde Witch Costume

A glamorous witch is a black evening outfit with a hat on top. Wear a long black velvet dress with sheer sleeves, or a fitted black top with a flowing maxi skirt, under a deep purple cape. Decorate a wide-brim pointed hat with ribbon and fabric stars, and put a comb or two clips inside the band so it doesn't tip in the wind. Loose waves go under the brim, with plenty showing over the shoulders. Plum shadow, defined lashes, pearly highlight and berry lips. A short decorative broom, a moon bag and black buckled ankle boots.
37. Blonde Vampire Costume

A blonde vampire skips the blood and leans on red velvet. A high-neck black midi dress, or a ruffled blouse with tailored black trousers, goes under a red velvet cape lined in black and closed with a brooch. Polished curls, a sleek updo or a platinum shoulder-length wig. Pale foundation, smoky plum eyes, defined brows and deep red lips; blot and powder the lipstick, or it ends up on your glass. Small fangs are optional, and if you wear them, choose ones you can talk through. A cameo necklace, a red rose and black lace-up boots or block heels.
38. Blonde Angel Costume

An angel lives or dies on the wings, so I test them in a doorway first. Compact feather-look wings fit through doors and don't hit the people behind you. Wear a flowing white maxi dress, a tailored white jumpsuit or a white blouse with wide-leg pants, with a metallic gold belt for shape. Soft curls or a loose braided crown. Gold shadow, glowing skin, rosy cheeks and a glossy neutral lip. A light gold halo headband, star earrings and a small cloud-shaped bag. White flats, gold sandals or white sneakers, and white tights with a fitted white cardigan keep her warm.
39. Blonde Fairy Costume

A blonde fairy is a pastel dress with flowers in the hair. Look for lavender, pale blue or blush in a knee-length layered skirt, with matching opaque tights and iridescent wings on soft straps. Loose waves with two thin front braids, and tiny silk flowers tucked into the braids, where they'll grip. Pastel shadow, pink blush, a few pearl face accents and skin-safe shimmer. A flower wand or a mushroom-shaped purse. Ballet flats with ribbon ties. Keep the wings in proportion to the body and skip long trailing fabric that catches on everything.
40. Blonde Mermaid Costume

A mermaid you can walk in starts with the skirt. A high-waisted green or blue sequin maxi that flares slightly at the hem gives the tail shape, but it needs a back slit or real stretch, or you'll be shuffling. I'd sit down in it before buying. Pair it with a shimmery aqua top. Beach waves with pearl clips along one side. Turquoise shadow, glowing highlight, coral lips and a few stick-on pearls near the eyes. A shell bag and layered pearl necklaces. Flats or low metallic sandals hidden under the hem, no fins required.
41. Goldilocks Storybook Costume

Goldilocks is all about the ringlets. Set the hair on foam rollers overnight or use a curled wig, then add a ribbon headband. A pale yellow or blue puff-sleeve dress with a white apron, and a cardigan for outdoors. Rosy cheeks, light mascara and pink lips. A small wooden-look bowl and spoon or a plush bear. White knee socks and brown Mary Janes. For a group, three friends in bear ears and brown clothes complete the story. Roller curls drop fast in damp air, so a light hairspray before you head out helps them last.
42. Aphrodite Greek Goddess Costume

Aphrodite is white drapes and gold accents. A white maxi with draped sleeves works, or a large white scarf wrapped over a simple sleeveless gown and pinned at one shoulder with a hidden safety pin. A gold belt at the waist and a light chiffon cape for movement. Loose curls with a few small braids pinned half-up, under a gold laurel headband. Champagne shadow, peach blush and rose lips. Silk roses or a shell-shaped bag, and gold flat sandals. Chiffon turns see-through in bright light, so I always check it in daylight first and add a slip if needed.
43. Blonde Viking Shieldmaiden Costume

The shieldmaiden is built from textures, so mix them: a cream long-sleeve tunic, a brown lace-up vest and a rust or forest-green midi skirt over dark leggings. A wide faux-leather belt with a small fabric pouch hung from it. Two side braids that join into one bigger braid at the back; I do them slightly loose so they look lived-in. Earthy shadow, defined brows and lightly bronzed cheeks. Faux-fur shoulder trim and plastic metal-look hair beads, which weigh far less than real metal. Brown knee boots. A round foam shield is fun for photos, but she reads fine without it.
44. Blonde Disco Queen Costume

Disco is about curls and movement. Wear a silver or gold sequin jumpsuit with flared legs, or a shimmery wrap top with high-waisted metallic pants, plus a wide belt for the 1970s waist. Big bouncy curls with a centre part and a light setting spray. Blue or gold shadow, lashes, peach blush and glossy lips. Big hoops, tinted round sunglasses and a mirrored clutch. White platform boots look right, but stable block heels or metallic sneakers are safer on a dance floor. Sequin jumpsuits don't breathe, so wear a thin cotton layer underneath if you'll dance all night.
45. Blonde 1980s Aerobics Costume

The 1980s aerobics look is cheap to put together and easy to spot across a crowded room. A neon long-sleeve bodysuit over high-waisted leggings, or a fitted athletic top for more coverage, then contrasting shorts, leg warmers and a wide stretch belt. A high side ponytail with a big scrunchie. Blue shadow, pink blush and bright rose lips. Sweatbands, wrist cuffs and a painted cardboard cassette player. White high-tops you can actually walk and dance in. Most of it is probably in a drawer already, and it adjusts for any size or age.
46. Blonde 1990s Pop Star Costume

This one is a whole era rather than one singer, which takes the pressure off getting it exact. A pastel cropped jacket over a fitted tank, with high-waisted cargo pants or a pleated skort over tights, sticking to pink, silver and white. A smooth high ponytail with two thin face-framing strands; gel it at the hairline, since that's where flyaways show most. Frosted shadow, brown lip liner with neutral gloss and soft pink blush. Small hoops, a headset microphone and a mini backpack. White platform sneakers are easier to walk in than tall boots.
47. Blonde Scarecrow Costume

A blonde scarecrow is a friendly autumn costume made from comfortable clothes. A plaid button-down under denim overalls, with patches in warm colours on the knees and pockets. Add a soft rope belt and raffia at the cuffs; I stitch the raffia to a strip of ribbon first so it stays put instead of falling out all night. Two loose braids under a floppy brown hat with silk sunflowers. Peach blush, painted freckles and gentle stitch lines at the corners of the mouth. A small basket of fake apples, and brown boots that cope with grass and mud.
48. Blonde Ghost Bride Costume

A ghost bride can be eerie without any wounds. Choose a vintage-style white or pale gray maxi with lace sleeves and a light tulle veil secured behind a floral headband. Loose, slightly tousled waves under the veil. A light pale base, gray-lavender shadow and cool pink lips. The faded colours make the ghost, so I'd dull a bright white dress with a weak tea soak if it looks too new. A white silk bouquet tied with gray ribbon, pearl earrings and a delicate pendant add age. White lace-up boots or silver flats, and it's tame enough for any public party.
49. Blonde Sun Costume

The sun is an original, which means the headpiece has to do the explaining. Cut rays from gold craft foam and glue them to a padded headband, keeping them short and evenly spaced so the band doesn't tip forward. A yellow or gold fit-and-flare dress over shimmery tights, or a metallic jumpsuit for warmth. A high textured ponytail or loose waves with gold ribbon. Golden shadow, peach blush, highlight and coral lips. Star earrings, a round gold purse and flexible wrist cuffs. Yellow ankle boots or gold flats. People get it at a glance.
50. Blonde Mad Scientist Costume

The mad scientist ends the list on a silly note. A white coat over a bright button-down, with dark trousers or a knee-length skirt and tights. Tease the hair into a deliberately messy updo and push clear safety goggles up onto the forehead. Silver shadow, strong mascara, pink blush and a touch of shimmer. Fill the coat pockets with plastic measuring spoons, pom-poms and empty labelled bottles, and carry a clipboard of silly formulas. Teasing is rough on hair, so brush it out gently with conditioner afterwards. White sneakers or loafers keep it school-friendly.
Pink Tips and Silver Streaks on Light Hair
Temporary colour behaves differently on blonde hair, and it catches people out with Harley Quinn, the Gaga looks and the pop stars. Bleached or very porous hair can grab pinks, blues and purples and hold onto them long after the party.
- Test the spray or chalk on a hidden section underneath at least a day before.
- Smooth a little leave-in conditioner over the ends first. It gives the colour less to soak into.
- Coloured sprays and chalk rub off on collars and pillowcases, so wear a dark collar and use an old towel when you wash it out.
- Wash out with a clarifying shampoo, and expect bleached hair to need a second wash.
- Not sure about your hair? Coloured clip-in strands give the same look with no risk at all.
Glitter hair spray is the other one to think twice about. It sheds onto everyone you hug and takes several washes to clear, so I keep it to a few streaks near the face.
Blonde Is Where These Costumes Start, Not Where They End
Blonde hair gets you halfway to a lot of these characters, but the cut and styling are what tell people which one you are. A clear silhouette, a deliberate hairstyle, a tight colour palette, shoes you can walk in and one good prop will make even a thrifted outfit look finished. Go for a named character when you want people to guess straight away, or a witch, fairy, sun or retro look when you'd rather play. Natural blondes may not need a wig at all, and clip-in extensions or a decent costume wig open every option to everyone else. Adjust the coverage, shoes and accessories to your night, because a costume you're comfortable in is the one you'll actually enjoy.
