Three people agreeing on one costume can take longer than actually making it. The ideas below run from cartoon characters and storybook sets to decade looks and silly food jokes, and most of them come together from closets, thrift racks and a sheet of craft foam. A few leave room for proper sewing if one of you enjoys a project. I've written each one head to toe, shoes and makeup included, and noted where hemlines, layers or colors can shift for cold weather, school or office rules. Friends, siblings and mixed groups can all make them work.

Dividing the Making Among Three People
Most of the trios below have one role that needs more building than the other two: the Cat's tall hat, Buzz's wings, the painted rock shell. I hand that role to whoever actually likes making things, and let the other two cover the shared shopping, such as felt, elastic, fabric glue and face paint for the whole group. It keeps the work fair without anyone keeping score.
- Settle the shared color or accessory before anyone shops. One red, the same knee socks or matching headbands will pull together pieces bought from three different places.
- Lay all three outfits side by side in daylight a week ahead. Pinks, grays and browns that looked identical on the hanger often turn out warmer or cooler next to each other.
- Do one full try-on with shoes and props, then sit down in a kitchen chair. Anything that pokes, slips or jams under the seat gets fixed now, not at the party.
- Pack a single repair pouch for the group: safety pins, a travel sewing kit, double-sided fabric tape and spare bobby pins.
Talk about money early, too. If one character costs noticeably more to put together, split the shared supplies so nobody ends up funding the whole idea.
1. Powerpuff Girls Trio Costume

Give each person one sister: Blossom in pink with a black waist stripe and a large red bow, Bubbles in blue with blonde pigtails tied in blue, Buttercup in green with a short black wig or a dark bob. All three wear white knee socks and black flats, and white tights swap in on a cold night. Oversized T-shirts belted at the waist make the quickest dresses, though thrifted skater dresses or matching tops and skirts are fine too. The detail I spend time on is that black stripe. A strip of black grosgrain or bias tape stitched around the waist looks far cleaner than marker. Keep makeup to simple black liner, rosy cheeks and each sister's signature eye color, then stand in color order with small star props.
2. Three Blind Mice Trio Costume

Gray is the whole costume here, so I mix textures on purpose: a chunky knit on one mouse, a fitted top on another, leggings or a knee-length skirt underneath. That keeps three gray outfits from looking like a uniform. Add gray ears on headbands, soft fabric tails, white gloves and comfortable black shoes. The round sunglasses carry the joke, and they also cut your vision in a dim room, so wear them for photos and push them up for walking. Gray shadow, a pink nose and thin whiskers in face-safe eyeliner finish the faces. A painted cardboard tube makes a light white cane, and a foam cheese wedge is the school-friendly swap.
3. Rock Paper Scissors Trio Costume

This one is three outfits and one shared gesture, which is why it reads so well in photos. Rock wears a gray sweatshirt, gray joggers and silver sneakers under a lightweight painted cardboard rock. Paper goes all white with a poster-board rectangle ruled in pale blue notebook lines. Scissors takes a silver top, black pants, metallic shoes and an oversized foam scissors prop fastened across the front. Build those blades from foam only, with rounded tips, because a crowded room will push someone into them. Keep hair plain, add silver or gray makeup accents, and have each person throw their hand sign when the camera comes out. It's a solid last-minute pick for casual parties and school events.
4. Sun Moon And Star Trio Costume

No character makeup to copy here, just shine. The sun wears a yellow or gold dress, matching tights, metallic shoes and a craft-foam ray headpiece, with gold shadow and a warm highlighter. Thin craft foam flops, so I glue two layers together for the rays. The moon takes a silver jumpsuit or gray dress, a crescent headband, silver boots and cool shimmer around the eyes. The star wears white or glittering navy with star clips, metallic sneakers and a foam star wand. Keep all three in fabrics with a similar sheen; one matte cotton beside two metallic pieces looks borrowed from a different party. For an evening event, battery string lights can be pinned carefully to capes or belts, while reflective stars and sequins do the job in daylight.
5. Traffic Light Trio Costume

Red, yellow and green, one person each, in matching tops and bottoms, monochrome dresses or sweatsuits. Felt circles on the front, outlined in black, give the lights their shape. If the base is polyester, I sew the circles on or use a fabric glue made for synthetics, because craft-glued felt tends to peel off slick fabric within the first hour of wear. Matching wigs, ribbons, eye makeup and sneakers carry each color from head to toe. Black belts lettered “stop,” “slow” and “go,” or small poster-board signs, spell out the joke, and black jackets or a cardboard frame around the circles tie the three together. It's cheap, gender-neutral and easy to read from across a crowded room.
6. Mario Luigi And Princess Peach Trio Costume

Mario and Luigi share one base: blue overalls, white gloves and brown boots, then a red or green shirt and a matching cap with a handmade letter emblem. I cut those letters from felt and stitch them on, since a glued emblem on a curved cap front starts lifting at the edges. Mustaches go on with face-safe makeup or soft adhesive felt; test the adhesive on your forearm first, because upper-lip skin is touchy. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, white gloves, pink flats, a gold crown and long blonde hair worn down, with blue earrings and soft rosy makeup. Pink trousers with a matching blouse are a good swap if she'd rather skip the dress. Foam coins, stars or mushrooms keep the props light.
7. Harry Hermione And Ron Trio Costume

This is the trio I'd pick for a cold night, because the base is layers: a white button-down, striped tie, dark sweater, black trousers or a pleated skirt and sturdy black shoes. Graduation gowns or plain black fabric capes stand in for robes. Harry gets round glasses, messy dark hair and a small lightning mark in makeup. Hermione's hair should be full and wavy, with natural makeup and a thick book under her arm. Ron takes a short red wig or temporary color plus a stuffed rat. Temporary color sprays rub off onto collars, so do Ron's hair before the white shirt goes on. Painted dowels or rolled paper make wands that look clearly decorative, and matching scarves with handmade house patches pull the three together without any official costume pieces.
8. Alvin Simon And Theodore Trio Costume

Sweatshirts make this the coziest trio on the list. Alvin wears a long red sweatshirt with a large yellow “A,” a red cap, tan pants and white sneakers. Simon goes blue in a hoodie or sweater with dark trousers, blue shoes and round glasses. Theodore wears green with relaxed pants and matching sneakers. The brown ear headbands and small fabric tails are what make them chipmunks; leave them off and people guess three color-coded friends. I stitch Alvin's felt letter on rather than glue it, since the sweatshirt stretches every time he moves and glue lets go first. Warm brown shadow, a tiny black nose and fine whiskers finish the faces, and toy microphones or music-note signs help in photos. Kids, family groups and anyone wanting full coverage outdoors will be comfortable in it.
9. Sanderson Sisters Trio Costume

Big color and layered fabric carry the Sanderson Sisters, so the makeup can stay friendly. Winifred wears a long green dress under a purple robe, lace-up boots, curled red hair and an exaggerated berry lip. Sarah wears deep red and purple with a flowing cloak, blonde waves, smoky purple eyes and heeled ankle boots. Mary takes a warm rust dress, a patterned apron, a dark cape, black boots and a high twisted hairstyle with purple accents. Thrifted maxi dresses, velvet curtains, shawls and costume jewelry are where I'd start. Curtain velvet is heavy, though, so I use it for the robe or cape only, never a full dress, or the wearer overheats indoors. Keep the brooms and old books light enough to carry all night.
10. Woody Buzz And Jessie Trio Costume

Woody wears jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, brown boots and a tan cowboy hat. Buzz needs a white base with green and purple fabric panels, white sneakers, a purple head covering and soft detachable wings in foam board. Jessie wears jeans or a denim skirt, a white shirt with yellow details, cow-print chaps or panels, a red hat, a braided red wig and brown boots. Buzz is the hard one. Foam board wings catch in doorways and crease when he leans back, so I attach them with hook-and-loop tape to a strap harness that comes off at the table. Keep the faces to clean, rosy makeup, add foam badges and belt details, and the three outlines stay distinct while the shared colors link them.
11. Scooby Shaggy And Velma Trio Costume

Comfort is built in, because most of this is everyday clothing in the right colors. Scooby wears a brown sweatsuit or plain brown dress, floppy ears, a fabric tail, brown shoes and a blue collar with a diamond-shaped tag, plus a black nose and a few brown spots in face-safe paint. Shaggy needs a loose green tee, brown or burgundy pants, casual sneakers and messy hair. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red shoes, a short brown bob and thick square glasses. Her bob is the piece I'd fuss over. Cheap bob wigs often come long and bulky, and a trim straight across the fringe with sharp scissors makes it look like her. A magnifying glass, flashlight or snack box covers props, and all three can sit and eat without a problem.
12. Cat In The Hat And Things Trio Costume

One person gets the showpiece and two match, which suits a teacher with two kids, siblings, or a family with one taller member. The Cat wears a black jumpsuit or black top and pants, white gloves, black shoes, a red bow tie and the tall red-and-white striped hat, plus soft ears, a tail, white face accents, whiskers and a pink nose. Thing One and Thing Two wear red sweatsuits or dresses, red sneakers, white circular chest labels and fluffy blue wigs, with light blue shadow or face glitter. That tall hat is where this costume fails. I build it from felt over a light foam tube rather than card, then pin it into the hair or add an elastic chin strap, because a tall hat tips forward the first time you bend down. Breathable fabrics keep the Cat from cooking under all that black.
13. Three Little Pigs Trio Costume

Give each pig a slightly different pastel so they stop looking like one costume times three. Pink overalls, dresses or sweaters over comfortable trousers make the base. Add pig-ear headbands, curly tails, pink shoes and round snouts fixed with skin-safe adhesive. For the tails, I wrap a pipe cleaner in pink felt so it holds its curl all night. The props tell the story: a raffia bundle for straw, a few craft sticks for sticks, and a foam brick painted red. Skip anything bulky that won't fit in the car. Rosy blush and a few freckles are enough makeup, pink thermals go underneath on a cold night, and matching gingham scarves or bow ties make the three look planned.
14. Goldilocks And Two Bears Trio Costume

Goldilocks wears a blue or yellow dress with a white apron, Mary Jane shoes, knee socks and blonde curls tied with a ribbon, plus soft pink makeup and a wooden spoon or empty oatmeal bowl. The two bears wear brown sweaters and trousers, furry ear headbands, fabric tails and comfortable boots. Dress one bear in dark brown and the other in tan; otherwise they merge into a single brown shape in photos. Brown shadow, black noses and small whisker dots finish their faces, and gingham scarves or vests add texture. Because the colors and props carry the story, this adapts to any age or body type, which is why I suggest it to mixed families.
15. Alice Mad Hatter And White Rabbit Trio Costume

Alice wears a pale blue dress, a white apron, a black ribbon headband, white tights and black flats, with smooth hair and fresh, rosy makeup. The Mad Hatter mixes a colorful blazer, a patterned vest, cropped trousers, bright socks, lace-up shoes and an oversized top hat trimmed with ribbon and a price tag, plus vivid shadow and tousled hair. The White Rabbit wears white trousers and a white shirt, a red or burgundy vest, rabbit ears, a red bow tie, white shoes and a big foam pocket watch. The Hatter's hat needs the same care as any oversized hat: a light foam build with a hair comb sewn inside so it doesn't slide. Repeat blue, red and white across all three and the very different shapes still look like one story.
16. Dorothy Scarecrow And Tin Man Trio Costume

Dorothy wears a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, white socks, red flats, braided pigtails and natural rosy makeup, and carries a small basket with a plush dog inside. The Scarecrow needs patched brown trousers, a plaid shirt, a floppy hat, a rope belt, brown boots and raffia tied at the cuffs, with simple stitch lines drawn near the mouth and no wounds. The Tin Man wears silver joggers and a metallic top, silver shoes, a funnel hat, clean silver face makeup and a foam heart on his chest. Plan that silver face carefully. Set it with powder and stop short of the hairline and collar, because metallic paint transfers onto everything it touches. Flexible fabric beats rigid cardboard here so all three can move and sit.
17. Joy Sadness And Anger Trio Costume

Color blocking does most of the work. Joy wears a yellow fit-and-flare dress with faint blue florals, yellow flats, a short blue wig and sparkling gold makeup. Sadness wears a pale blue sweater, navy pants, blue shoes, round glasses and a shoulder-length blue wig; blue face makeup is optional, and blue eye shadow is the lighter route. Anger wears a white shirt, a striped tie, brown trousers, dark shoes and a boxy red vest or jacket, with a short red wig and bold red brows. If Sadness does go fully blue, cream paint creases on a warm night, so thin layers and setting powder matter more than heavy coverage. Practice each character's face for photos. The clothes stay modest enough for school or office events.
18. Gru Lucy And Minion Trio Costume

Gru wears black trousers, a black zip-up jacket, dark boots, a gray-and-black striped scarf and a smooth bald cap if he wants it, with minimal makeup and a harmless foam gadget. Lucy takes a fitted turquoise dress or coat, a patterned scarf, low blue heels and a bright orange bob, plus pink lipstick and winged liner. The Minion wears denim overalls over a yellow long-sleeve shirt, black gloves, black boots, round goggles and a yellow cap, and carries a small plush banana. I warn anyone trying a bald cap that it gets hot quickly and the edge shows unless it's blended with makeup; a snug skin-tone swim cap is the easier stand-in. Three distinct shapes and palettes keep the group easy to tell apart.
19. Regina Gretchen And Karen Trio Costume

Pink ties the group together while each outfit stays its own. Regina wears a pink cardigan over a fitted white top, a black mini or knee-length skirt, sleek blonde hair and heeled boots. Gretchen pairs a pink polo or sweater with a plaid skirt, glossy dark hair, tights and loafers. Karen wears a pink tank over a white tee, a simple skirt, pink shoes and long blonde waves. Natural glam makeup with lip gloss and defined lashes suits all three. Compare the pinks side by side in daylight before the night, because a cool bubblegum next to a warm salmon looks like a mistake rather than a choice. Small handbags, notebooks or handmade flyers make easy props, and tailored trousers can replace the short skirts.
20. Cher Dionne And Tai Trio Costume

Plaid is the backbone of this one. Cher wears a yellow plaid blazer with a matching skirt, white knee socks, black shoes, blonde hair and a mini backpack. Dionne takes a black-and-white plaid jacket and skirt, a red top, a patterned hat, knee socks and long braids. Tai wears a graphic T-shirt under a colorful cardigan, a knee-length skirt, tights, chunky shoes and auburn curls. Fresh makeup, neutral lips and tidy brows go on all three. Thrift racks rarely hand you a matching plaid set, so I look for the blazer first and pair it with any plain skirt in the plaid's darkest color. Shopping bags or old-style phone props help, and the repeated knee socks keep the three connected.
21. 80s Aerobics Trio Costume

Each person wears a bright leotard or fitted tank over opaque leggings, then shorts, a wide belt, leg warmers, wristbands and supportive sneakers. Give everyone a two-color pairing, such as pink with purple, blue with yellow and green with orange, so the group looks deliberate. Hair goes into high side ponytails, teased curls or an updo under a sweatband, and the makeup is blue shadow, bright blush and glossy lips. Leotards aren't for everyone, and an oversized off-shoulder sweatshirt over bike shorts or joggers says the same decade. Leg warmers are the easiest make here: cut the sleeves off an old sweater and fold the cut edge under. Foam or empty-bottle hand weights, white sneakers and matching headbands finish the coordination.
22. 70s Disco Trio Costume

Disco needs movement and shine, with a separate palette for each person. One wears a metallic jumpsuit, one flared trousers with a sequined top, and the third a wrap dress with platforms. Pick platforms with a wide, stable heel; a narrow vintage platform is where ankles turn on a dance floor. Add big sunglasses, hoop earrings, layered necklaces and a soft faux-fur jacket if it's cool out. Hair can be feathered waves, a rounded natural shape or long center-parted curls, with shimmery shadow, defined lashes and gloss. Silver, gold and jewel tones sit well together on camera. Mirrored-ball purses or star clutches make practical props, and wide collars with flared hems give all three the same decade outline.
23. 90s Pop Star Trio Costume

Each person plays a different member of the group. One wears a sporty crop top over a fitted tank, track pants, platform sneakers and high pigtails. The second takes a metallic mini dress or tunic over opaque tights, tall boots and sleek straight hair. The third wears a colorful halter-style top over a tee, cargo pants, sneakers and small braids or clips. Headset microphones are the fun part to make: bend craft wire around an old headband toward the mouth and cap the end with a felt ball. Frosted shadow, glossy lips and tiny face gems suit the era, and one shared accent color links all three. Full-length tops and jackets add coverage without losing the platforms or the attitude.
24. Barbie Trio Costume

Three versions of one doll means everyone gets a different pink outfit under the same theme. The classic glam version is a pink fit-and-flare dress, blonde waves, pearls and pink pumps. The western version is a pink vest, white top, flared jeans, pink boots and a white cowboy hat. The roller version wears an athletic romper or tank-and-shorts set, knee pads, a visor, striped socks and bright sneakers in place of real skates, which nobody wants on a dark sidewalk. Rosy makeup and matching pink handbags tie them together. A cardboard doll-box frame is a fun photo prop, but keep it open and light so it can be set down rather than worn all evening.
25. Pastel Fairy Trio Costume

Lavender, mint and blush pink, one per person, in a flowing dress, a tulle skirt with a fitted top, or a comfortable jumpsuit. Add sheer wings, ballet flats or ankle boots, flower crowns and small ribbon-wrapped wands. Hair can go into loose curls, a braided crown or soft buns with tiny faux flowers. Iridescent shadow, a few face gems and a light sweep of highlighter beat heavy theatrical makeup. Wings are the practical question. Wire-framed ones catch on doorways and car seats, so I'd use wire-free fabric panels or a soft store-bought pair. Glitter tulle sheds, too, and you'll be finding it in the car for weeks. Matching silver accessories hold the three together while each keeps her own shade.
26. Western Cowgirl Trio Costume

Denim and thrift-store accessories carry this trio. Each person starts with jeans, a denim skirt or flared trousers, then adds a plaid shirt, fitted tank or fringed vest, cowboy boots, a wide belt and a hat. Give each a separate color story, for instance red, turquoise and pink, so the three don't blur into one. Braids, loose waves or a low ponytail with natural makeup and rosy cheeks suit it. Bandanas, foam sheriff badges and small rope loops make safe accessories; leave realistic weapons at home. I attach cow-print panels or fringe with removable fabric tape so the clothes go straight back into the wardrobe afterward. If the boots are new, wear them around the house for a few evenings first.
27. Race Car Driver Trio Costume

Effort is nearly equal for all three, which keeps anyone from feeling short-changed. Pick red, blue and black mechanic-style coveralls or matching jackets with straight-leg pants, then add checkered tape, number patches, racing stripes and invented sponsor-style symbols that don't copy real brands. Caps, fingerless gloves, white sneakers or sturdy boots and mirrored sunglasses finish the uniforms. Hair goes in low ponytails, braids or under the caps; makeup is waterproof liner and a lipstick matched to each suit. Mark patch positions on all three suits at the same time before sticking anything down, because one set of patches sitting two inches lower is what makes a group look thrown together. Foam steering wheels, checkered flags or cardboard trophies work as props.
28. S’mores Trio Costume

Graham cracker, chocolate bar and marshmallow, and the joke only lands when the three stand in that order. The cracker wears tan with a square cardboard front painted with the dotted pattern, tan shoes and neutral makeup. Chocolate wears dark brown and brown boots with a flexible foam rectangle scored into raised squares. The marshmallow takes an all-white sweatsuit or puffy dress, white sneakers, a rounded white hat and pearly makeup. Keep every panel light and short enough to sit in. Brown, tan and white hair accessories mark each ingredient without wigs. Since the clothes underneath are mostly sweats, this is a warm pick for a cool outdoor event.
29. Bacon Eggs And Toast Trio Costume

Bacon wears a red shirt and pants with wavy cream-colored felt strips, red sneakers and a matching headband. Eggs goes all white with a large yellow felt circle at the center, white shoes and a sunny yellow hair bow. Toast wears tan under a foam or cardboard bread-shaped panel, with brown shoes and a butter-yellow hat or bow tie. Bright, natural makeup with a little matching shadow is plenty. Give each panel soft edges and shoulder straps so hands stay free; I cut those straps from wide elastic, which gives when you reach and doesn't dig in. A spatula, breakfast menu or empty plate gets a laugh, though the torso panels already read from a distance.
30. Sun Cloud And Rainbow Weather Trio Costume

The sun wears a yellow dress or matching set, gold sneakers, face gems and a light ray-shaped headband. The cloud dresses in white or pale gray with soft fabric puffs attached to a sweatshirt, white shoes, silver shadow and dangling blue ribbon “raindrops.” The rainbow takes a multicolored striped dress, jumpsuit or layered tulle skirt with a white top, colorful sneakers and rainbow hair clips. For the cloud, I lightly stuff fabric circles with fiberfill and stitch them down; glued cotton batting flattens the first time someone leans against it. Repeat one blue detail across all three for the sky, and add small foam weather signs for photos. Soft pieces and flexible clothes keep adults and kids comfortable, indoors or out.
Torso Panels You Can Still Sit Down In
Several of these trios hang their joke on a flat panel worn over the body: the rock, the paper, the traffic lights, the s'mores and the breakfast set. Panels are also where a good night goes sideways. A board cut too long jams against the chair, or thin straps bite into the shoulders by the second hour.
Size and Material
Measure from the collarbone to the top of the thigh with the wearer seated, and stop the panel there. For anything worn for hours, I prefer foam sheet over corrugated cardboard. Foam bends when you bump into someone and shrugs off a damp lawn, while cardboard softens and sags as soon as it gets rained on. Cardboard is fine for a short indoor party and costs next to nothing.
Straps, Edges and Paint
- Use wide elastic for the shoulder straps and cross them at the back, so the panel moves with you instead of swinging.
- Round every corner and tape any cut cardboard edge so it can't scrape an arm in a crowd.
- Paint before the straps go on, and let water-based paint dry overnight or it rubs off onto the clothes underneath.
- Hot glue holds indoors but can let go in cold air. For an outdoor night, stitch the straps through the panel and glue a fabric patch over the back of each join.
Let Each Friend Claim a Character
A trio comes off when all three people are comfortable and the shared theme is obvious at a glance. Before you settle on one, talk through the event, the weather, how much walking there will be, the budget and how much coverage each person wants. Agree on one repeated color or accessory so pieces bought in different places still match. Over a long night, light props and decent shoes count for more than any finishing detail. And let everyone pick a role they actually like, because nobody enjoys being handed the dull one.
