Three is a lovely number for a group costume. It's small enough to plan in one group chat and big enough that people recognise the film the moment you walk in together. Disney trios are especially forgiving, because so many of them are built on colour: one red, one blue, one green, or a hero, a sidekick and a villain who look nothing alike. Almost all of the groups below can be made from thrifted basics, coloured dresses, plain T-shirts, craft foam and simple makeup, and I've written each one from head to toe. Some are sweet and nostalgic, some are funny, and a few let somebody play the villain. Read them with your two people in mind and pick the trio where everyone gets a part they want.

Making Three Separate Outfits Look Planned Together
Each of these trios is three different costumes, often built by three different people on three different budgets. The risk is that one person goes all out, one does the bare minimum, and the photo shows a costume, a half-costume and a friend in a T-shirt. A little coordination before anyone shops fixes most of that.
- Agree on the level of effort first. If one person wants a full wig and makeup, the other two should at least have their character's hair and signature colour.
- Give out roles by comfort, not just by looks. The person who hates wigs takes Olaf or Rufus; the one who loves makeup takes Genie's blue or Jack's skeleton face.
- Pick one shared detail and repeat it on all three: the same gold trim, snowflake clips, white gloves or a single accent colour. It's the cheapest way to make a group look planned.
- Match the finish of the fabrics. Two matte cotton costumes next to one shiny satin one looks unbalanced, even in the right colours.
- Do a dress rehearsal photo a few days early. Seen together on a phone screen, it's obvious which costume needs one more detail.
On the night, stand in the order people expect, usually hero in the middle, and keep the shared prop with whoever is least likely to put it down somewhere.
1. Anna Elsa And Olaf Costume

Frozen is the trio I'd suggest first, since the three silhouettes are so different that nobody gets confused. Anna wears a black embroidered vest over a blue dress, a magenta cape, two braided pigtails, freckles and black ankle boots. Elsa needs a pale blue maxi, a sheer sparkling cape, silver flats, cool-toned eyes and one loose platinum braid over the shoulder. Olaf is the comfortable one: white pants, a white sweatshirt with black felt buttons, an orange foam nose and a twig headband. I put a few snowflake clips in all three heads of hair, which quietly ties them together in photos. Keep both capes short if you're walking any distance.
2. Ariel Sebastian And Flounder Costume

The Little Mermaid trio is bright, cheerful and kind to whoever doesn't want a wig. Ariel wears a purple fitted top with a shimmering green maxi skirt, a red wavy wig, pearl clips and purple flats. Sebastian is a red shirt and pants, red gloves and a headband with craft-foam crab eyes on short stalks; I mount the eyes on pipe cleaners so they bob instead of snapping off. Flounder wears a yellow T-shirt, blue shorts, blue-striped leggings, yellow shoes and small blue fins on the sleeves. A few iridescent felt circles on each outfit read as bubbles. Clear plastic ornaments look better but crack when someone hugs you, so I'd save those for photos.
3. Woody Jessie And Buzz Lightyear Costume

Toy Story gives you a cowboy, a cowgirl and a space ranger, and the mix is what makes it fun. Woody needs a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, blue jeans, a red neckerchief, brown boots and a tan hat. Jessie wears a white shirt with yellow panels, jeans with cow-print chaps, a red hat and a red braided wig. Buzz is white joggers and a white top with green, purple and gray felt panels, a purple hood and soft foam wings. I attach Buzz's wings with hook-and-loop tape so they come off for the car and for sitting down. A bit of cloud-print fabric somewhere on each costume nods to the bedroom wallpaper.
4. Mike Sulley And Boo Costume

The Monsters, Inc. trio is soft and friendly, which makes it a family favourite, often with a small child as Boo. Mike wears lime green pants and sweatshirt with one big felt eye on the front and small foam horns. Sulley needs turquoise clothes covered in purple felt spots, soft horns and fluffy wrist cuffs. I cut the spots in irregular sizes, because evenly matched circles look like polka dots rather than fur markings. Boo wears an oversized pink T-shirt, purple leggings, white socks, pigtails and white sneakers. A paper door or small plush monster makes a good photo prop. Separates are far cooler than full monster suits indoors.
5. Carl Russell And Dug Costume

Up works well when the group spans generations, since Carl suits an adult and Russell a child. Carl wears brown trousers, a white shirt, a bow tie, a cardigan, square glasses, a gray wig and black lace-ups, with a light painted PVC walker. Russell needs a yellow shirt, brown shorts, an orange neckerchief, a sash full of handmade badges, a yellow cap and hiking socks. Dug wears tan clothes, floppy ears, a little brown face paint and a cardboard collar with a bright centre button. Tie three or four balloons to Russell's backpack on short strings; long strings tangle, and helium balloons drag on a windy walk.
6. Flora Fauna And Merryweather Costume

The three good fairies are for friends who like matching silhouettes in different colours. Each wears a long dress, a pointed cape, a soft hood and flats, one in red, one in green and one in blue. Coordinated belts, sheer sleeves and small wing-shaped cape panels add detail. Hair goes in neat buns or under rounded hoods. Rosy cheeks, a little shimmer and a lip that suits each fairy's colour. Carry short star-topped wands of cardboard and ribbon. When I style this trio, I insist on the same fabric and the same hem length for all three dresses, even if they come from three different thrift shops; the matching cut is what makes them read as a set.
7. Winifred Sarah And Mary Sanderson Costume

The Sanderson sisters are big personalities, and the hair is what tells them apart. Winifred wears a green velvet dress under a purple robe, a high curled red wig, dramatic lipstick, striped tights and buckled boots. Her wig needs height at the front, so I back-comb the crown and pin it over a small padded bun. Sarah wears a dusty rose corset-style top over a flowing skirt, long blonde waves, smoky purple makeup and black ankle boots. Mary has a red blouse, a textured orange vest, a patchwork skirt and a dark curly wig with a purple streak. Rings, layered necklaces and spellbook purses finish them. Leave out occult symbols and ritual props, since the clashing colours already carry it.
8. Huey Dewey And Louie Costume

Huey, Dewey and Louie are about the simplest group costume there is: one outfit in three colours. Everyone gets white shorts or pants, yellow tights, orange shoe covers and a white collared top. Then Huey takes red, Dewey blue and Louie green, through a cap, sweater or vest. Orange bill visors, soft white feather cuffs and small plush tails at the waist add the duck. A touch of orange around the nose and rosy cheeks is all the makeup they need. Because the base is identical, I'd spend a little extra on caps that are exactly the same style, so the colour is the only difference. It's comfortable enough for a long night of trick-or-treating or a day at a theme park.
9. Three Caballeros Costume

The Three Caballeros are a musical trio, and each bird gets a completely different outfit. Donald wears a blue sailor shirt, white pants, yellow tights, orange shoes, a red bow tie and a blue cap. José needs a green suit or green separates, a yellow shirt, a red bow tie, a green hat with a feather and brown loafers. Panchito wears red trousers and a cropped red jacket over a white shirt, brown boots and a big yellow sombrero. Sombreros catch every doorway and every neighbour's head, so I'd choose a light straw one with a brim you can tilt. Maracas or a small toy guitar, white gloves for all three, and breathable fabrics if you plan to dance.
10. Joy Sadness And Anxiety Costume

The Inside Out 2 trio is easy to build from everyday clothes, and the three colours separate it clearly. Joy wears a yellow sleeveless dress with blue floral shapes, a short blue wig, yellow flats and a coral lip. Sadness needs a pale blue sweater, navy pants, round glasses, a chin-length blue wig and gray sneakers. Anxiety wears an orange and white striped sweater, brown trousers, orange sneakers and a tall, messy orange wig. That wig is the hardest piece; I tease it at the roots and spray it with a strong-hold hairspray so it stays wild without collapsing. Small felt emotion badges or colour-matched bags are better than bulky props.
11. Lilo Stitch And Angel Costume

Lilo, Stitch and Angel give you one girl and two soft creature costumes. Lilo wears a red dress with white leaf shapes, sandals, long dark hair and a flower clip. Stitch is blue joggers and a hoodie with a pale blue belly panel, soft ears and blue sneakers. Angel mirrors him in pink, with a pale chest panel and long pink-and-purple ears. Long floppy ears droop by mid-evening unless they have something inside, so I slide a strip of millinery wire or a bent pipe cleaner into each one and shape it. Lilo can carry a small camera or flower lei, the creatures plush tropical flowers. Light tails keep everyone moving freely.
12. Hercules Meg And Phil Costume

Hercules gives you a hero, a glamorous lead and a grumpy satyr, so nobody wears the same thing. Hercules wears a brown tunic top, a blue cape, a leather-look belt, wrist cuffs, tan pants, brown sandals and a short auburn wig. Meg needs a long purple draped dress with gold clasps, purple flats, a high auburn ponytail, winged liner and mauve lipstick. Phil is a tan shirt and shorts with faux-fur trim, brown leggings, curly hair, a beard, goat ears and hoof shoe covers. Hoof covers slip on smooth floors, so I glue a strip of non-slip fabric or puffy paint along the soles. A foam medallion for Hercules and a gold hair piece for Meg are enough.
13. Aladdin Jasmine And Genie Costume

Aladdin's trio stands out through jewel tones, so the colours need to be strong. Aladdin wears loose white pants, a purple vest, a cream sash, a red fez and brown pointed flats. Jasmine needs turquoise harem pants, a matching cropped top over a skin-tone camisole, gold jewellery, turquoise shoes and a long segmented ponytail. To make that ponytail, I tie hair elastics at even spacing down a long ponytail wig or extension, then puff out each section. Genie wears bright blue clothes with red sash details, gold cuffs and a curled black wig, with blue makeup kept away from the eyes. A lamp-shaped purse makes a fun shared prop. Use the same gold trim on all three.
14. Peter Pan Wendy And Tinker Bell Costume

A Neverland trio needs one person who's happy to wear tights. Peter Pan wears a green tunic over matching leggings, a brown belt, a pointed felt cap, a short red wig and flexible brown boots. Wendy needs a light blue ankle-length nightdress, a blue ribbon, a curled ponytail and black flats. Tinker Bell wears a strapless-look green dress layered over a fitted top, translucent wings, a blonde bun and green pom-pom flats. Wings are the piece that fails, so I'd buy or build them on elastic arm loops as well as a back plate, which stops them swinging sideways. Small leaf or gold star details tie the three together. Skip the dagger or use a soft fabric one.
15. Alice Mad Hatter And White Rabbit Costume

The Alice trio is meant to clash, and that's the charm. Alice wears a pale blue dress with a white apron, a black ribbon headband, white tights and black Mary Janes. The Mad Hatter needs patterned trousers, a colourful vest, an oversized bow tie, a green jacket, an orange curly wig, striped socks and a tall decorated hat. The White Rabbit wears red trousers, a white shirt, a yellow vest, a blue jacket, white gloves, rabbit ears and black dress shoes. Tall hats topple when you turn your head, so I add a thin elastic under the hair at the back. A foam pocket watch and mismatched teacup purses make good props, and a few black-and-white checks on all three link them.
16. Winnie The Pooh Tigger And Piglet Costume

Pooh, Tigger and Piglet suit adults, teens and children alike, which helps with family groups. Pooh wears yellow pants and a yellow top under a cropped red T-shirt, with soft bear ears. Tigger needs orange joggers and a hoodie with black felt stripes, round ears and a long tail. A tail that long drags and gets stepped on, so I stiffen it with a length of soft wire or a pool noodle strip and pin the end up into a curl. Piglet wears pale pink leggings, a darker pink striped top, pointed ears and pink cheeks. A honey-pot bucket for Pooh. Sweatsuits in place of padded mascot suits keep everyone cool.
17. Simba Timon And Pumbaa Costume

The Lion King trio is all warm savanna colours, and the textures do the talking. Simba wears golden-brown clothes, a fluffy brown mane headband, ears, a tail, tan sneakers and a little feline face paint. Timon needs a beige top, brown pants, rounded ears, a slim tail and a light belly panel. Pumbaa wears a rust-coloured sweatsuit, a black faux-fur collar, soft tusks and rounded ears. The mane is the piece I'd fuss over: faux fur sewn onto a fabric-covered headband, then brushed out and trimmed so it frames the face without covering the ears. Paw mittens and earthy makeup on all three tie them together.
18. Remy Linguini And Colette Costume

Ratatouille is a clever trio, and two of the three costumes are almost the same. Remy wears gray pants, a gray top, pink-lined mouse ears, a tail, gray sneakers, whiskers and a little white chef hat. Linguini needs black trousers, a white double-breasted chef jacket, a red neckerchief, black shoes and messy auburn hair. Colette wears fitted black pants, a white chef jacket, a black apron, a red neckerchief, black flats and dark hair in a practical bob or low bun. Secondhand chef jackets turn up cheaply in thrift shops and uniform suppliers, and a quick press makes them look new. Wooden spoons, recipe cards or fabric vegetables, and Remy's gray is the joke that ties them together.
19. Ralph Vanellope And Fix-It Felix Costume

Wreck-It Ralph is a casual trio, good for an outdoor event where layers matter. Ralph wears brown overalls over an orange shirt, big padded hands, a messy dark wig and brown shoes, with dirt makeup kept cartoonish. Those oversized hands mean he can't hold anything, so I'd make them slip-off mitts rather than glued gloves. Vanellope needs a mint hoodie, a brown pleated skirt, striped leggings, black sneakers, a high ponytail and candy-shaped clips. Fix-It Felix wears blue work pants and shirt, a yellow cap, a tool belt filled with foam tools and brown boots. Pixel badges or cardboard game tokens on all three link them. Everything layers easily over a warm top.
20. Mirabel Isabela And Luisa Costume

The Madrigal sisters are full of flowers and embroidery, and that's where handmade work pays off. Mirabel wears a white embroidered blouse, a turquoise skirt covered in colourful motifs, green glasses, a curly bob and purple flats. Isabela needs a flowing lavender dress with fabric flowers, long dark waves, floral clips and purple eye makeup. Luisa wears a white blouse with red trim, a long blue skirt, a red hair ribbon, brown boots and a neat bun. For Mirabel's skirt, I cut the motifs from felt and fuse them on with iron-on adhesive web before stitching round the edges, which stops the corners lifting. Small flower garlands or butterfly bags are better than big props.
21. Moana Maui And Hei Hei Costume

Moana, Maui and Hei Hei make a lively group, with the chicken as the comic role. Moana wears a red patterned bandeau-style top over a fitted camisole, a cream fringed skirt, a flower crown, wavy dark hair, a shell necklace and brown sandals. Maui needs tan leggings, a leaf-print wrap skirt, a brown top printed with swirling shapes, a curly wig, leaf anklets and sandals. Hei Hei wears blue pants and top, a red feathered collar, a rooster headpiece, yellow tights and orange shoes. I'd skip Maui's hook; it's big, awkward and the costume reads without it. Fabric leaves and raffia trim give all three a tropical finish, though raffia sheds, so give it a shake outside first.
22. Mulan Mushu And Cri-Kee Costume

The Mulan trio pairs one graceful costume with two funny companions. Mulan wears a layered pink, blue and red robe-inspired dress, a wide sash, black flats, straight dark hair and soft rosy makeup. Mushu needs red pants, a red hoodie with a yellow belly panel, gold horns, a tail and red sneakers. Cri-Kee wears bright blue with purple wing panels, a curled antenna headband and blue shoes. Antenna headbands flop unless they're wired, so I twist chenille stems around a thin wire core and bend the curl in by hand. Mulan carries a painted folding fan, the companions small scroll-shaped bags. Detachable horns and wings help through a long evening.
23. Kuzco Pacha And Yzma Costume

Kuzco, Pacha and Yzma are a comedy trio with very different shapes, and two of them need tall headpieces. Kuzco wears a red tunic with yellow trim, a wide gold collar, red leggings, gold sandals and a tall black headpiece. Pacha needs a green poncho, brown trousers, a rope belt, brown sandals and a soft brown hat. Yzma wears a long black dress, a purple feather collar, a high purple headpiece and lavender eye makeup with exaggerated brows. Build both tall headpieces from foam over a fitted cap, not a headband; a headband can't hold that much height steady. A pink potion-bottle purse for Yzma, llama badges for the others, and purple and gold repeated throughout.
24. Maleficent Aurora And Diaval Costume

This Sleeping Beauty trio sets dark fantasy against soft princess colours. Maleficent wears a long black dress, a structured purple cape, a curved horn headpiece, black boots, red lipstick and sharp cheek contour. The horns get heavy, so I make them from foam or stuffed fabric and anchor them to a cap that ties under the hair. Aurora needs a pink or blue off-the-shoulder-style gown layered modestly, a gold crown, soft blonde curls and matching flats. Diaval wears black trousers, a feather-textured top or cape, black gloves, slicked dark hair and smoky eyes. Small raven feather details connect him to Maleficent. Leave sharp staffs, claws and costume contact lenses out of it.
25. Cruella Jasper And Horace Costume

Cruella and her two henchmen are a stylish villain trio with a little heist humour. Cruella wears a black dress, a spotted faux-fur coat, red gloves, red heels, dramatic liner and a half-black, half-white wig. Two-tone wigs are often sewn as two halves, and the parting shows if it slips, so I pin hers firmly along that centre line. Jasper needs a brown suit, a burgundy vest, a flat cap, a striped scarf and slightly messy hair. Horace wears loose brown trousers, a worn jacket, a striped shirt, a knit cap and brown boots. Give both henchmen fabric money bags with paw prints instead of tools. A red handbag and big jewellery for Cruella.
26. Jack Sally And Zero Costume

Jack, Sally and Zero can feel spooky and still stay friendly. Jack wears a black pinstripe suit, a bat-shaped bow tie, white gloves, black shoes and white-and-black skeleton face paint. Sally needs a patchwork midi dress, striped tights, a red yarn wig, blue-toned makeup with stitches drawn lightly in liner, and black ankle boots. Zero wears white pants, a flowing white poncho with long ears, white face makeup, an orange pumpkin nose and white sneakers. I'd cut Sally's patchwork from scraps of real fabric and stitch it onto a plain dress, since printed patchwork looks flat beside Jack's crisp suit. Matching black-and-white accents balance her brighter colours.
27. Kim Possible Ron Stoppable And Rufus Costume

Kim Possible's trio is casual clothes plus a few clever details. Kim wears olive cargo pants, a black fitted top, a utility belt, black gloves, an auburn wig and chunky black boots. Ron needs beige cargo pants, a black long-sleeve shirt, a brown belt, a blonde wig and gray sneakers. Rufus is a soft pink sweatsuit with a pale belly panel, rounded ears, a tail and pink sneakers. If one of the three is a small child, I'd make them Rufus, because it's the comfiest costume and the one people coo over. Craft-foam communicator wristbands for everyone. It's light enough for school events or indoor parties.
28. Phineas Ferb And Perry Costume

Phineas, Ferb and Perry are all about cartoon shapes, so the wigs and hats do the heavy lifting. Phineas wears an orange and cream striped shirt, blue shorts, orange sneakers, simple freckles and a red wig. Ferb needs purple trousers, a pale yellow collared shirt, a black belt, black shoes, big drawn eyebrows and a tall green wig. Perry wears turquoise pants and sweatshirt, orange shoe covers, a flat orange bill visor, a brown felt tail and a brown fedora. Getting Phineas's pointed head shape is easier with a craft-foam cone under the wig than with styling alone. Keep every face visible, and use foam shapes on headbands for the rest.
29. Mickey Minnie And Donald Costume

Mickey, Minnie and Donald suit almost any age, and they're forgiving if you only have a weekend. Mickey wears red shorts with two big white buttons, a black long-sleeve top, black tights, yellow shoes, white gloves and round ears. Minnie needs a red polka-dot dress, white gloves, yellow heels or flats, bow ears and red lipstick. Donald wears white pants, a blue sailor top, a red bow tie, orange tights and shoes, white gloves and a blue cap. Mouse ears sold on thin plastic bands pinch behind the ears after an hour, so I'd choose a padded band or wrap a thin one in felt. A black nose for the mice, a bill visor for Donald, and white gloves on all three.
30. Elastigirl Mr. Incredible And Edna Mode Costume

The Incredibles trio pairs two matching heroes with the family's tiny, fearless designer. Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible wear red tops and leggings with black collars, black gloves, black brief-style overskirts, yellow belts, black eye masks and black boots, with handmade “i” emblems on the chest. Edna wears a structured black mini dress over opaque tights, a sleek black bob wig, oversized round glasses, red lipstick and chunky black shoes. Fabric sketches or a measuring tape make her prop. Skip padded muscles if comfort matters. Fabric eye masks held on with spirit gum or lash glue stay put better than elastic ones, but patch-test the adhesive first.
When One of the Three Is a Small Child
Plenty of these trios end up as two parents and a little one, or one adult and two kids. That changes who should play which part, and how the costumes need to be built.
- Give the child the soft, roomy role whenever the film allows: Boo, Rufus, Piglet, Dug, Stitch, Olaf or Hei Hei. These are basically pyjamas with ears.
- Keep anything tied around a young child's neck short and fastened with hook-and-loop tape, so it releases if it catches. That goes for capes, bibs and neckerchiefs.
- Leave wigs and spirit gum off small kids. Pigtails, a coloured clip or a felt hood carry the character instead.
- Choose face paint made for skin and test it on the arm first. Children rub their eyes, so keep colour on the cheeks and nose.
- Check the school's costume rules if the child's costume will be worn there too. Masks, props and anything scary are the usual restrictions.
I'd also build the adults' costumes so they can carry a tired child or a dropped treat bucket without losing a horn or a hat. Adult costumes that need two hands and full attention tend not to last the evening with a toddler in tow.
Three Friends, One Film, a Part for Everyone
A trio works when each of the three has a clear role and the group still looks like it came from the same film. I start with the signature colours, then add each character's hair, makeup and shoes, and one or two light props at most. Closet basics and thrifted clothes cover most of these, with felt shapes, fabric trim and homemade headbands doing the rest. Keep comfort in mind as you build: breathable layers, capes fixed at the shoulders, tails that don't drag, and shoes you can walk in. Any of these adapts for adults, teens, children or mixed groups if you lead with colour rather than exact silhouettes. Above all, let everyone pick a character they're happy to be all night.
