Five people is where family costumes get tricky. With three, almost any theme works; with five, you need a story that actually has five characters, or someone ends up as a vague extra in a gray sweatshirt. Every theme below has five real roles, from cartoon families and storybook casts to food jokes and old-school monsters. Most start from closet basics, thrifted pieces and craft felt, and the ready-made route is mentioned where it makes sense. Before you choose, think honestly about the walk: how far you'll go, how cold it gets, how old the youngest is and whether one of the five is riding in a stroller. That decides more than the theme does.

Spreading Five Costumes Over Three Weekends
Five homemade costumes in one weekend is how a parent ends up hot-gluing ears at midnight. I break the job up by difficulty and start with the costume that has the most construction, usually a shell, a tunic, a big hat or anything with a frame.
- First weekend: buy every base layer, then build the hardest costume. It needs time for glue to cure and for a test wear.
- Second weekend: the hats, ears and tails. These are small, but there are five sets, and they're what makes each character read.
- Third weekend: makeup trial, shoe check and a short walk in full costume. Fix whatever slips or itches.
Give each child one small job they can do safely, like cutting felt spots, choosing the ribbon or painting cardboard coins. Kids who helped make a costume complain about it far less, and it takes some pressure off the adult doing the sewing.
1. The Incredibles Family Costume

The Incredibles is one of the very few films that hands a family exactly five characters: Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. Everyone wears a red long-sleeve top with red leggings or joggers, black briefs over the top, a yellow felt belt and a chest emblem. The hair tells them apart: a brown shoulder-length wig for Elastigirl, a long black one for Violet, swept-back blond for Dash and a soft orange tuft for Jack-Jack. I sew the baby's mask onto a soft hat rather than tying anything near a small face. Buy all five red tops in one go, since mismatched reds look sloppy in a line.
2. Scooby-Doo Family Costume

Mystery Inc. is my favorite five-person closet costume, because only Scooby needs real making. Fred wears a white sweater, blue pants and an orange neck scarf. Daphne gets a purple dress, green scarf, purple tights and a red wig. Velma is an orange sweater, red skirt, knee socks, square glasses and a short brown bob. Shaggy is a loose green shirt and brown pants, which suits the teen who wants to make no effort at all. Scooby wears a brown hooded onesie with felt spots, floppy ears and a blue collar. Felt paw covers over sneakers slide off on steps, so I'd skip them and just wear brown shoes.
3. Addams Family Costume

Two adults and three kids slot naturally into Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley and Uncle Fester. Gomez wears a striped suit, slick hair and a thin mustache. Morticia needs a floor-length black dress, long straight hair, pale makeup and dark lipstick. Wednesday wears a black dress with a white collar, braids and black tights, and Pugsley a striped shirt with dark shorts and crew socks. Fester is the hard one: a bald cap looks rubbery under bright porch lights unless you blend the edge with foundation and powder. A child who won't tolerate one can wear a smooth skin-tone swim cap instead, and it reads nearly the same.
4. Toy Story Family Costume

Toy Story gives you more characters than you need, and this lineup of Woody, Jessie, Buzz, Bo Peep and an alien covers every age. Woody wears jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red neckerchief and a cowboy hat. Jessie wears a white western shirt, a red hat and a braided red wig. Buzz is a white tracksuit with green and purple felt panels and a hood. Bo Peep wears a pale blue jumpsuit with a pink bow and carries a foam crook. The alien is the toddler costume: a green hoodie, blue pants and three felt eyes on a headband. Back those antenna eyes with pipe cleaners so they stand up.
5. Wizard Of Oz Family Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion and Glinda fill all five spots without inventing anyone. Dorothy wears blue gingham over a white blouse, braids and red flats. The Scarecrow is patched brown clothing, a floppy hat and raffia at the wrists. The Tin Man wears silver-gray separates with metallic fabric panels and a foam funnel hat. The Lion stays warm in a tan sweatsuit and mane hood, and Glinda gets a pink dress, a curled wig and a crown. Silver face paint is the one thing I'd go light on here; metallic cream paint creases on a warm evening, so a few silver accents on the cheekbones beat a full face.
6. Inside Out Family Costume

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear is a five-color theme, and the colors are doing nearly all of the work. Joy wears yellow with a short blue wig, Sadness a cream sweater, blue pants, round glasses and a blue bob, Anger a white shirt, red tie and red face makeup, Disgust a green dress, purple scarf and green wig, and Fear purple pants, a striped vest, bow tie and tall purple hair. Five synthetic wigs is the expensive part, so I'd only buy wigs for the characters whose hair really matters, Joy and Disgust, and use hair chalk or a beanie for the rest. Painted clear ornaments make sweet memory orbs.
7. Super Mario Family Costume

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Bowser give a family two easy costumes, one dress-up role, one hat project and one big build. Mario and Luigi wear red or green shirts, blue overalls, white gloves, caps and mustaches. Peach needs a pink dress, a long blonde wig, earrings and a foam crown. Toad wears white pants, a blue vest and a large felt mushroom hat. Bowser is a yellow hoodie and pants with a soft green shell backpack, orange hair and felt horns. I build Bowser's shell from a stuffed fabric dome on backpack straps, never a hard bowl, so the wearer can lean back in a car seat.
8. Monsters Inc. Family Costume

Sully, Mike, Boo, Celia and Roz spread nicely across ages, and Roz is a rare costume that a grandparent will actually enjoy. Sully wears a turquoise furry hoodie with purple felt spots and soft horns. Mike is a bright green outfit with one large felt eye. Boo wears an oversized pink T-shirt over purple leggings with pigtails. Celia gets a purple dress, a blue-green wig styled into fabric snake curls and bold eye makeup. Roz wears a mustard cardigan, brown skirt, gray wig and cat-eye glasses. Faux fur sheds hard when you cut it, so I cut Sully's hoodie fur from the back with small snips through the backing only.
9. Bluey Family Costume

Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, Chilli and Muffin is the most comfortable family-of-five option here, and very small children will keep it on all night. Start with blue, orange, navy and cream hooded sweatshirts and matching joggers, then add felt belly patches, eyebrows, ears and tails. Bluey and Bandit wear layered blues, Bingo and Chilli orange and cream, and Muffin pale blue, gray and white. Paint small black noses and keep any color away from toddlers' eyes. Paw mittens look cute for photos, but a child needs hands for a treat bag, so I attach them to the sleeve cuffs with a little snap so they can hang off.
10. Peter Pan Family Costume

Neverland gives you Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell and the crocodile, and somebody in most families is desperate to be the villain. Peter wears a green tunic, brown leggings and a pointed felt hat. Wendy wears a long blue dress with a ribbon. Hook gets a red coat, a white ruffled shirt, a curly wig and a big hat, with a soft foam hook. Tinker Bell wears a green dress, a blonde bun and wings. The crocodile is a green hooded onesie with felt teeth and a long padded tail. Keep the tail shorter than the wearer's knees, or siblings will be stepping on it at every doorstep.
11. Alice In Wonderland Family Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat is a strong theme for a family with one confident teen, because the Queen gets to be bossy all night. Alice wears a blue dress, white apron, black headband and striped tights. The Hatter needs a bright coat, patterned pants, an orange wig and a big foam hat. The Rabbit wears white with a red jacket and ears, carrying a cardboard clock. The Queen wears red and black with a gold crown and a painted heart. The Cheshire Cat is a striped pink-and-purple hoodie with ears and a painted grin; that wide smile is best drawn with a cream liner, which won't crack the way dried water-based paint does.
12. Ghostbusters Family Costume

Four ghost catchers and one ghost is a smart answer when four people want the same costume and one wants something different. The catchers wear tan coveralls or khaki shirts and cargo pants, black belts, homemade name patches, clear safety glasses and boots. The packs are painted cardboard boxes with foam tubes on fabric straps. Keep the kids' versions small, because a big box makes a child top-heavy on stairs. The fifth person is a round green ghost in a bright hooded tunic with green face paint. Embroidered or printed name patches are worth the effort; four different names are what turn matching coveralls into a team.
13. Jurassic Park Family Costume

Three park staff and two dinosaurs suits a family where the adults want practical clothes and the kids want tails. The handlers wear khaki shirts, cargo pants or shorts, utility vests, sun hats and boots, with visitor badges, toy binoculars and paper maps. One child wears a green T. rex jumpsuit with felt teeth and a padded tail, the other an orange triceratops with a soft frill and fabric horns. A triceratops frill made of plain felt flops over within an hour, so I sandwich a layer of craft foam between two felt pieces and stitch around the edge. Keep both dinosaur faces friendly for younger trick-or-treaters on the street.
14. Minions Family Costume

Three Minions with Gru and Lucy is a lovely theme for a family with three kids close in age, since the Minions are one pattern made three times. Each wears a yellow hoodie under denim overalls, black gloves, round goggles and different felt hair on the hood. Gru wears a dark zip jacket, slim black pants, a gray striped scarf and a bald cap. Lucy wears a turquoise coat, aqua tights and a short red-orange wig. Goggles from the craft aisle sit on the forehead nicely, but they fog up and pinch if worn over the eyes, so I glue the lenses onto a hood instead of a strap.
15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Family Costume

Four turtles and April O'Neil is the theme for a family of five with turtle-obsessed kids. The turtles wear green hoodies and joggers with tan felt chest panels and lightweight shell backpacks, each with a different colored mask, wristbands and belt. Green paint on the cheeks is plenty; nobody needs a fully green face. April wears a yellow jumpsuit, a short red wig and white sneakers, and carries a toy microphone. Swap weapons for clean pizza-box props. The shells are where it goes wrong: a big shell on a small child pulls the hoodie back at the neck, so I stitch the straps to the sweatshirt itself.
16. Power Rangers Family Costume

Power Rangers is the easiest five-color costume to plan, because each person is assigned a color and the details stay identical. Everyone wears a red, blue, pink, yellow or black long top with matching leggings, white diamond shapes on the chest, white belts and white gloves. Soft helmet-shaped hoods are kinder to children than rigid masks, which cut side vision almost completely. White boots look right, but white sneakers are the better call for a long route. I make the diamond shapes from removable fabric tape so the leggings can go back into everyday rotation in November.
17. Pokémon Family Costume

Two trainers and three creatures means three kids get the fun hooded suits and the adults wear jeans. The trainers wear bright caps, layered jackets, fingerless gloves, sneakers and small backpacks with foam ball props. Pikachu is a yellow hooded jumpsuit with black-tipped ears, red cheeks and a lightning tail. Eevee is a brown onesie with a cream collar, tall ears and a fluffy tail. Bulbasaur wears green with darker spots and a soft bulb backpack. Tall ears on a hood flop forward by mid-evening, so I sew a thin strip of plastic canvas inside each one, the same trick I use for any upright animal ear.
18. Minecraft Family Costume

Steve, Alex, a Creeper, an Enderman and a pig cover the whole Minecraft cast a family would want. Steve wears a turquoise shirt, blue pants and a square headpiece. Alex wears a green shirt, brown pants and orange hair. The Creeper is a green sweatsuit with pixel felt squares and a soft cube hood. The Enderman is all black with purple eye panels, gloves and a tall foam headpiece. The pig wears pink with a square snout hood. Give the Enderman role to the tallest adult; the tall headpiece is top-heavy, so I keep it under shoulder width and strap it under the chin so it doesn't rock with every step.
19. Circus Family Costume

A circus has as many roles as you have people, which makes it easy to stretch to five: ringmaster, strong performer, clown, acrobat and lion. The ringmaster wears a red tailcoat, white shirt, black pants and a gold-trimmed hat. The strong performer wears a striped shirt, black shorts over leggings and a curled mustache. The clown gets bright overalls, a colorful wig and cheerful face paint. The acrobat wears a sparkly leotard over opaque tights with a high ponytail, and the lion a tan sweatsuit and mane hood. Clown face paint smears onto every hug, so I set it with translucent powder and keep a pack of wipes in a pocket.
20. Safari Family Costume

Two explorers and three animals is the most flexible theme here, since the animals can be whatever is already in the dress-up box. The explorers wear khaki shirts, cargo pants, utility vests, sun hats, binoculars and boots. A lion wears a tan onesie, a mane hood and a tail. A zebra wears black-and-white stripes with felt ears and a yarn mane. A giraffe wears golden brown with felt spots and a hood with small ossicones. Felt spots on a stretchy onesie should be stitched rather than glued, because glue stiffens the fabric and the spots pop off when the child crouches.
21. Farm Family Costume

Two farmers and three barnyard animals is a cozy pick for a cold night, since everything layers. The farmers wear plaid shirts, denim overalls, straw hats, red bandanas and work boots. The cow wears a white hooded outfit with black felt patches, ears and a tail. The pig gets pink sweats, a felt snout and a curled tail. The chicken wears a white tunic covered in fabric feathers, yellow leggings, a red comb headband and orange sneakers. I cut chicken feathers from white felt in layered rows, glued at the top edge only, so they flutter and don't stiffen. Thermals fit under every one of these.
22. Weather Family Costume

Sunshine, a rainbow, a cloud, rain and wind is a homemade theme that relies on color and a few hanging details. Sunshine wears yellow with a foam ray headband and ribbon streamers. The rainbow wears multicolored layers, striped tights and a cloud headband. The cloud is gray sweats covered in lightweight fiberfill. Rain wears a blue raincoat, boots and a hat hung with felt droplets, which is also the costume I'd give to whoever hates being cold. Wind wears pale gray flowing layers with swirls of ribbon. Keep every dangling piece shorter than a hand's length so nothing tangles or catches on porch railings.
23. Crayon Box Family Costume

Five crayons is cheap, fast and almost foolproof. Give each person red, blue, green, yellow or purple, and dress them in a matching top and pants or leggings. Add black felt stripes at the chest, wrists and ankles to copy the wrapper, and cone hats in flexible craft foam on a comfortable elastic. A painted cardboard box makes a great photo prop for the whole family to stand in. Measure the cones so their base sits just inside the hairline; too wide and they slide sideways, too narrow and they perch and fall. Cut the photo box low so the little ones can step out on their own.
24. S’mores Family Costume

Two graham crackers, a chocolate bar, a marshmallow and a campfire is a smart way to turn the classic s'mores trio into five. The crackers wear tan clothes under square foam tunics marked with dotted lines. The chocolate bar wears dark brown with a segmented felt tunic. The marshmallow is a soft white cylindrical tunic over white leggings with a rounded hat. The campfire wears dark clothes with layered red, orange and yellow felt flames around the torso and a headband. I'd never put working string lights into a child's flame costume; layered felt in three shades catches porch light and needs no batteries.
25. Breakfast Family Costume

Egg, bacon, toast, cereal and milk is a breakfast table on legs. The egg wears white separates under an oval felt tunic with a yellow center. Bacon wears a wavy red-and-pink striped tunic over red leggings. Toast is tan clothes under a bread-shaped foam vest with brown edging. Cereal wears a bowl-shaped tunic with felt circles and a spoon headband, and milk a carton-shaped tunic with blue details. Rigid carton and bowl shapes fight with stairs and car seats, so I make every food panel as two flat foam pieces joined at the shoulders like a sandwich board, open at the sides.
26. Classic Monster Family Costume

A vampire, a mummy, a werewolf, Frankenstein's monster and a friendly ghost is the classic monster lineup, without any gore. The vampire wears black with a red-lined cape and pale makeup. The mummy is cream sweats wrapped loosely with fabric strips. The werewolf gets layered brown clothes, a furry hood, ears and a painted nose. Frankenstein's monster wears a dark jacket, green face makeup and flat-top hair. The ghost wears a white poncho over leggings. Mummy strips unravel and trail by the second block unless you tack each end down with a few stitches or a safety pin on the inside.
27. Little Red Riding Hood Family Costume

This fairy tale stretches to five with Red, the wolf, Grandma, a woodcutter-style forest guide and a tree. Red wears a checked dress, a scarlet hooded cape, braids and boots, and carries a basket. The wolf wears gray sweats, a furry vest, ears and a tail. Grandma wears a floral dress, cardigan, gray wig and round glasses. The guide wears a plaid shirt, suspenders and a knit cap, with a map instead of an axe. The tree is brown clothes with a leafy green cape and a twig headband. I make the tree's leaves from felt, not real leaves or paper, because real leaves crumble and paper tears in an hour.
28. Outer Space Family Costume

Two astronauts, an alien, a robot and a rocket make a space theme where everyone has a different build. The astronauts wear white jumpsuits with silver tape, mission patches and light backpack units. The alien wears bright green or purple with a soft antenna headband. The robot wears silver with flexible cardboard control panels and a square headband. The rocket wears a white cylindrical tunic with red fins and fabric flames. Silver duct tape looks great but doesn't stick well to fleece or knit, so on soft clothing I use reflective iron-on tape, which also makes the kids visible to cars after dark.
29. Bee And Garden Family Costume

One beekeeper, two bees, a flower and a honey pot suits a family with two small children who want to match. The beekeeper wears beige coveralls, boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with mesh kept off the face. Each bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black leggings, sheer wings and antennae. The flower wears green with a petal collar and leafy cuffs. The honey pot wears golden yellow under a rounded tan tunic with a dripping felt border. Two bees in one family means two sets of wings bumping each other, so I keep them narrower than the child's shoulders, which also gets them through doorways.
30. Under The Sea Family Costume

A mermaid, an octopus, a shark, a sea turtle and a scuba diver is a bright ocean group with one obvious problem: the mermaid can't walk in a fishtail. So I give her a scale-patterned maxi skirt with a split up the back and flats hidden underneath. The octopus wears purple with a hood topped in big felt eyes and fabric tentacles. The shark is a gray hooded onesie with soft teeth and a dorsal fin. The turtle wears green with a padded shell backpack. The diver wears a black tracksuit, goggles pushed up on the head, foam tanks and felt flippers worn over shoes. Stuff the tentacles lightly or they drag.
The Stroller, the Wagon and the Tired Four-Year-Old
A family of five rarely walks at one pace. The oldest wants to run ahead, the toddler stops at every pumpkin, and somebody is in a stroller. Plan the costumes around that. Whoever pushes the stroller should wear the simplest costume with nothing hanging off the sleeves, because wings, tails and capes catch in the wheels and the handlebar.
For a baby in a stroller, put the costume detail where people can see it: a hat, a bunting with felt patches, or a decorated stroller canopy. A tail or shell is wasted lying flat under a blanket. If you're pulling a wagon, it can double as a prop, painted as a pirate ship, a crayon box or a campfire, and it gives tired walkers somewhere to sit.
What I pack for a group this size
- Safety pins and a small roll of tape for the costume that comes apart first
- Baby wipes for face paint smudges and sticky hands
- A spare pair of comfortable shoes for whoever insisted on costume boots
- A small flashlight or glow bracelets so you can count heads in the dark
Which Five Characters Your Crew Will Actually Wear
The best five-person theme is the one where every person, including the smallest, can walk, sit, see and carry a treat bag all evening. Character families, food lineups, monsters and color themes all work, as long as each role is clearly its own. Hand out the roles before you buy or sew anything, choose breathable layers and real shoes, and keep accessories soft. For a baby, the smallest role usually works best as a hooded onesie or a stroller bunting with a few felt details. Then do a full dress rehearsal on a weekend so you find the slipping hat and the itchy seam before the night itself.
