A pregnancy Halloween is the one year the bump can be the star of the whole family's costume. Partners, toddlers, older kids and even the dog can all take a role around it, and nobody has to be uncomfortable doing it. Every idea below starts from stretchy maternity basics and good shoes, then adds felt, fabric paint or a little poster board. I've kept the props light and the pieces easy to take off, because the person carrying the baby is also the one who'll want to sit down first. Animals, food puns, storybooks and space all make an appearance.

Felt That Moves With a Growing Bump
Nearly every costume here puts something on the belly: a leaf, an eye, a sun, a pearl. The base is almost always a stretchy maternity dress or top, and stretch fabric is the reason so many of these decorations peel, pucker or fall off halfway through the night. A few habits fix most of it.
- Attach decorations while the dress is on you or on a dress form, not lying flat. A bump changes where the centre is.
- Hand-stitch felt with a loose running stitch around the edge. Tight stitches on jersey stop it stretching and pull the fabric into ripples.
- Fabric glue and hot glue stiffen stretch fabric and crack as you move. Save glue for felt-on-felt layers, then stitch the whole piece on.
- Big pieces like labels and planet panels are easier on Velcro or large safety pins, so they come off for sitting, driving or washing.
- If Halloween is a few weeks away, leave a little slack. The bump at your fitting won't be the bump on the night.
I also wash any new maternity dress once before decorating it. Jersey can shrink a little in the first wash, and you don't want a sun or a cracked egg to warp after you've spent an evening sewing it on.
1. Pumpkin Patch Family Costume

The bump becomes the smallest pumpkin in the patch. Mum wears a stretchy orange maternity dress with a green felt leaf sitting just above the belly, plus green leggings and cushioned brown ankle boots; loose curls and a little orange on the lids are optional. Her partner plays the farmer in overalls, plaid, a straw hat and work boots, and the kids are mini pumpkins in orange tops and green hats. I put the leaf on a large safety pin rather than sewing it, so it can move up as the bump does. If the dog joins in, a pumpkin bandana is plenty.
2. Bun In The Oven Family Costume

Bun in the oven is the joke everyone gets, but the cardboard is where it goes wrong. Build a light oven front that sits around the torso with generous room at the belly and open sides so heat can escape; a closed box gets hot fast. Underneath, a black maternity top, leggings, a neat bun and supportive trainers, with a soft fabric bread roll showing through the oven window. The partner is the baker in white trousers, a chef coat and non-slip shoes, and the kids are cupcakes or cookies with felt panels. Keep the oven short enough to sit down in, and attach it with straps you can undo in seconds.
3. Beehive And Beekeeper Family Costume

A round bump is basically a beehive already. Mum wears a golden-yellow maternity dress with curved black felt lines following the belly, a beehive headband, black tights and supportive flats. The partner is the beekeeper in beige coveralls, gloves, boots and a wide-brim hat with light mesh, and the kids are bees with striped tops, antennae and small fabric wings. I'd cut the felt lines as curves rather than straight stripes; straight lines across a bump distort and look like a bee costume, not a hive. A yellow bucket painted with a honeycomb pattern handles the candy, and the theme stretches to any family size or a pet.
4. Winnie The Pooh Family Costume

Pooh is cosy and needs almost no crafting. Mum wears a mustard maternity dress, or yellow leggings with a fitted yellow top, then a cropped red T-shirt that stops above the bump, which is the whole trick of the character. Round bear ears, rosy cheeks, a small honey pot and red or brown trainers finish her. The partner becomes Tigger in an orange sweatshirt with black felt stripes, and the kids can take Piglet, Eeyore or Christopher Robin from pink, blue-grey and yellow separates. Tails on children's costumes should stop well above the ankle, or they'll be stepped on before the second house.
5. Skeleton Family Costume

Skeletons can be sweet instead of scary when the bump carries a tiny skeleton of its own. Mum wears a stretchy black maternity dress with white fabric bones and a small baby skeleton over the belly, a low ponytail, simple black-and-white face details, warm leggings and cushioned black trainers. Everyone else matches in black with felt or fabric-paint bones. Fabric paint on stretch jersey cracks when it's pulled, so I paint the bones with the dress stretched over a board, then let it cure fully. Glow bracelets help after dark, and skip full-face masks, especially on children.
6. Avocado Toast Family Costume

In the avocado toast family, the bump is the pit. Mum wears a dark brown maternity top under a big green felt or foam avocado shape, open at the arms and legs, with black leggings and green slip-ons. Foam holds a crisp edge but doesn't breathe, so on a warm evening I'd choose felt over a thin felt-backed foam. The partner is toast with a tan shirt and a light bread-shaped panel, and the kids can be eggs, tomatoes or breakfast strips. A reusable grocery tote does for the prop, and none of it needs a sewing machine.
7. Pasta Chef And Sauce Family Costume

A pasta house gets a chef and a jar of sauce. Mum wears a red maternity dress with a green felt lid headband and a removable white label wrapped around the bump, plus black leggings and white trainers. The label should close with Velcro at the side, so you can loosen it after dinner. Her partner is the chef in a white top, checked trousers and a chef hat with a wooden spoon, and the kids become spaghetti, ravioli or grated cheese with yellow yarn and felt squares. An empty colander makes a great candy bowl, and keep every label homemade and generic.
8. Gumball Machine Family Costume

With felt circles across the belly, a white maternity shirt turns into a gumball machine. Pair it with a red skirt or trousers, a silver cardboard coin slot, a high ponytail and red trainers. Sew those circles or pom-poms on properly; glued pom-poms pop off within an hour and end up in toddlers' mouths. The partner becomes a coin in grey with a light circle on the chest, and the kids are gumballs in solid colours with matching hats. Clear treat buckets keep the costumes visible, and the whole set is an afternoon's craft.
9. Solar System Family Costume

Put the baby at the centre of the solar system. Mum wears a dark blue maternity dress with a removable planet panel over the bump, ringed with light felt, plus star clips, navy leggings and metallic trainers. The partner is an astronaut in white coveralls with homemade mission patches, helmet carried under one arm so he can actually see. Kids pick the sun, moon, stars or explorers. Battery string lights are fun if they stay cool and are taped down, but I keep the battery pack in a pocket, never against the belly. Leave capes off this one.
10. Dinosaur Egg Family Costume

Got a dinosaur fan in the family? Mum is the hatching egg: a white maternity sweatshirt with green spots and a jagged felt crack opening around the bump, a green cap, black maternity leggings and white trainers. A sweatshirt is the right base here because it's warm and the felt edge sits flat on fleece. The partner is the paleontologist in khaki and cargo trousers with a wide-brim hat, and the kids wear soft dino hoodies with short, floppy tails. Add paintbrushes, a toy magnifying glass and a cardboard fossil.
11. Friendly Monster Family Costume

Friendly monsters are the most forgiving costume here because nothing has to match. Mum wears a bright purple maternity dress with one big felt eye in the middle of the belly, a headband with small fabric horns, striped tights and cushioned trainers. The partner takes a spotted blue sweatshirt, fuzzy wrist cuffs and horns of his own, and each child becomes a different monster with felt teeth and soft tails. I'd use up the scrap box for this one; old fleece, leftover felt and odd socks all become monster parts. Googly-eye buckets carry the candy, and skip the hard masks and oversized feet.
12. Scarecrow Farm Family Costume

Denim maternity overalls are made for a scarecrow because the bib frames the bump on its own. Layer them over a soft plaid shirt, add two loose braids, rosy cheeks, a floppy straw hat, fabric patches and supportive brown boots. The partner can be a second scarecrow or the farmer with gloves and a toy watering can, and the kids are crows, pumpkins or sunflowers. Real straw itches, so I tie raffia loosely at the wrists and ankles instead. On a cold night, thermals slide under overalls without anyone seeing them.
13. Circus Family Costume

A circus family puts mum in charge as ringmaster. A red maternity dress, a cropped black or red tailcoat that stops above the bump, a mini top hat, black leggings and flat lace-up boots. A gold ribbon around the belly outlines its shape; tie it loosely and in a bow you can undo, never knotted. The partner is the strongman in stripes and braces with a foam barbell, and the kids are lions, clowns or ticket sellers. Swap clown masks for a little face paint and carry a paper ticket roll.
14. Storybook Cat Family Costume

This storybook cat theme gives every relative an easy part. Mum plays the mischievous cat in a black maternity dress, a tall red-and-white striped hat, white gloves, light whiskers and flat black boots. Her partner takes a blue wig, black top and bright blue trousers, and the kids wear red jumpsuits or red shirts with numbered white circles. Tall hats tip forward when you bend to help a toddler, so I add hat elastic under the chin or the back of the hair and take it off in crowds. A picture-book prop ties everyone together, and it's a gift for twins or close-in-age siblings.
15. Weather Forecast Family Costume

In the weather forecast, the bump is the sun. Mum wears a sky-blue maternity dress with a big yellow felt sun over the belly, white cloud clips in her hair, blue leggings and white trainers. Her partner is the forecaster in a blazer and loafers with a cardboard weather map, and the kids pick rainbow, cloud, raindrop or breeze. I cut every symbol from felt rather than card, since card creases the first time mum sits. Each child can have a different colour without breaking the theme, and it's tame enough for a school event.
16. Construction Crew Family Costume

Bump under construction. Mum wears black maternity leggings, a fitted grey top, a light orange safety vest left open at the front, a yellow hard hat and supportive work-style boots, with a removable bump ahead sign. The partner and kids match in vests, hard hats, plaid and jeans, carrying foam tools and empty buckets. Most hi-vis vests are cut straight, so buy a size up and leave it unzipped rather than squeezing it over the belly. Reflective tape helps on dark streets, and the whole lot comes from everyday clothes.
17. Garden Gnome Family Costume

Gnomes are whimsical and quick. Mum wears a blue maternity tunic over black leggings with a wide brown belt sitting above the bump, a soft red cone hat, braids, rosy cheeks and flat brown boots. The partner wears green with braces, a red hat and a light fabric beard if he wants one. Kids become smaller gnomes, mushrooms, flowers or a garden snail. A felt cone hat flops unless you stiffen it; I fold a sheet of craft card inside the cone and it stands up all night. Skip rigid mushroom caps, because they won't fit through doorways.
18. Goldilocks And Three Bears Family Costume

Goldilocks and the bears is lovely for a mum, partner and one or more children. Goldilocks wears a loose blue maternity dress with a white apron tied above the bump, a yellow ribbon in soft curls and comfortable flats. Papa Bear is in brown trousers and a brown sweater with round ears and a little nose paint, and the kids take Mama or Baby Bear in other shades of brown. A small stuffed bear can stand in for the baby. I like this one for sensitive skin, because it's all soft knit and only needs a dab of makeup on the bear noses.
19. Ice Cream Sundae Family Costume

The bump makes a good sundae when the scoops are flat felt. Mum wears a white maternity dress with pastel felt scoops across the belly, a red cherry headband, white leggings and pink trainers. Her partner is the server in stripes with a bow tie, apron and paper hat, and the kids pick cones, sprinkles, cherries or extra scoops. I'd skip puffy stuffed scoops; they look fun but make sitting awkward and add heat. Clean plastic scoops and paper cups are the props, and every child can claim a favourite flavour.
20. Baseball Team Family Costume

Sporty families can turn the bump into a baseball. A white maternity shirt with curved red felt stitching across the belly, maternity joggers, a ponytail, a cap and supportive trainers is the whole look. The partner is the coach in a jersey and athletic trousers, and the kids are players, an umpire or the mascot. Draw the stitch curves on the shirt while you're wearing it, using a chalk pencil, because a flat shirt never shows where the bump actually sits. A foam ball and a cardboard scorecard beat real equipment, and family numbers on the backs tie it together.
21. Under The Sea Family Costume

In an under-the-sea family, the bump is the pearl. Mum wears an aqua maternity dress with a white felt pearl over the belly, a shell headband, a little shimmery blue on the lids, white leggings and silver flats. Her partner is the sea captain or diver in navy and stripes, and the kids pick fish, turtles, jellyfish or starfish. Jellyfish tentacles on children should be short ribbon tied at hip height so they never reach the feet. A net bag of fabric sea creatures doubles as a treat bag.
22. Wizard Of Oz Family Costume

Dorothy is one of the kindest costumes for a pregnant body, since a gingham pinafore already falls loose from the chest. Mum wears a blue gingham maternity dress over a white blouse, braids, rosy cheeks and comfortable red flats. Her partner is the Scarecrow in patched clothes and a floppy hat, and the kids take the Tin Man, the Lion or a good witch. Go for grey knit on the Tin Man rather than stiff metallic card, which pinches at every bend. A stuffed dog in a light basket finishes Dorothy, with a tiny pair of shoes tucked in for the baby.
23. Family Of Superheroes Costume

Invent your own superhero family instead of copying one. Mum wears a stretchy blue maternity dress with a bright emblem centred on the bump, a short red cape, a sleek ponytail, leggings and supportive boots. The partner takes green and black with wrist cuffs, and each child gets a different colour, a soft cape and a felt mask. Family initials on every emblem make the set read as one team. Keep capes above the knee on everyone; a cape that tangles with mum's feet on steps is the last thing you want. The baby becomes the newest tiny hero.
24. Rainbow And Clouds Family Costume

A rainbow over the bump is easy to make from curved felt strips. Mum wears a sky-blue maternity dress, cloud clips, pastel eyeshadow, white tights and cushioned trainers. Her partner is the sun in yellow with a soft ray headband, and the kids are clouds, raindrops, stars or single rainbow bands. I lay the rainbow strips out on the dress before sewing and check the arch in a mirror standing sideways; it should curve with the belly, not sit flat on top. A fabric pot of gold holds the candy, and the theme has a role for every extra child.
25. Farm Animal Family Costume

A cow is the funniest farm animal for a pregnant mum, and it's warm. A white maternity dress with uneven black felt spots, a pink belly panel, cow ears, braids, black leggings and white trainers. Cut the spots in irregular blobs of different sizes; matching ovals look like a dalmatian. Her partner is the farmer in denim overalls and plaid, and the kids become a pig, chick, sheep or horse in solid sweat sets with soft ears. An empty milk pail is the prop. Face paint instead of masks lets everyone see the kerb.
26. Hot Air Balloon Family Costume

A hot air balloon sounds bulky, but this one is flat. Mum wears a blue maternity dress with curved coloured felt panels over the belly to make the balloon and a small fabric basket panel just below the bump, rather than any real structure. Add cloud clips, maternity leggings and supportive flats. The partner is an explorer in khaki with a vest, scarf and soft cap, and the kids are clouds, birds or fellow travellers. A rolled paper map and toy binoculars are all you carry. It goes through crowded rooms with no trouble.
27. Movie Theater Snack Family Costume

Movie night becomes a popcorn bump. Mum wears a red-and-white striped maternity dress with soft white pom-poms across the belly, a red headband, white leggings and red trainers. Her partner is the usher in black trousers, a red vest and a bow tie, and the kids take a soda cup, a candy box or a ticket made from felt panels. I hand-stitch each pom-pom through its centre, because hot glue on stretchy stripes lets go as soon as the fabric moves. An empty popcorn tub and paper tickets finish it.
28. Woodland Animal Family Costume

Earth tones make the woodland family feel right for the season. Mum is a deer in a tan maternity dress with a cream belly panel, small soft antlers, a side braid, a few freckles, brown leggings and flat boots. Her partner is a forest ranger in green and khaki, and the kids become a fox, owl, rabbit or squirrel in warm sweatshirts with ears and short tails. I'd choose plush or felt antlers over plastic ones; hard tines catch on doorways and on whoever is standing beside you. A basket of faux leaves and pinecones is the prop, and real jackets blend right in.
29. Ketchup Mustard And Hot Dog Family Costume

Ketchup, mustard and the hot dog is a cheap, quick food costume. Mum is ketchup in a red maternity dress with a white label across the bump, a green cap headband and white trainers. The partner is mustard in a yellow sweatshirt and trousers with a red cap. One child becomes the hot dog in brown between two tan felt panels, and others can be fries, pickles or the food-cart worker. Write the labels in your own words; bought novelty labels are usually printed on stiff film that cracks across a bump. A cardboard tray is the prop.
30. Candy Factory Family Costume

A candy factory lets the whole family go big on colour. Mum wears a purple maternity dress with a gold ribbon framing the bump, a bright cropped jacket, curls, striped tights and supportive boots. The partner is the eccentric candy maker in a velvet-look coat, patterned vest, bow tie and top hat, and the kids are factory workers or wrapped sweets. Cardboard candy shapes and striped buckets carry the theme, and the cane stays a prop, not something to lean on. I'd leave mum's jacket unbuttoned and make every piece easy to shrug off when the room heats up.
Comfort Checks for Trick-or-Treating Pregnant
The costume is the easy part. Walking a neighbourhood with small children while pregnant is where the planning pays off. These are the things I'd sort before you leave the house.
- Shoes come first. Flat, cushioned, already broken in. Feet often swell by evening, so if you're between sizes, wear the larger pair.
- Pregnant bodies run warm. Choose felt over foam, keep cardboard open at the sides and wear a light layer you can take off rather than one heavy one.
- Skin can be more sensitive than usual during pregnancy, so test any face paint on the inside of the wrist a day ahead, and choose products made for face use.
- Plan a halfway stop where you can sit down, and carry water in the treat bucket or a crossbody bag.
- Let the partner carry the heavy props and the tired toddler. The bump already has a job.
Wearing the Pieces Again After October
Most of these looks sit on clothes you'll keep: a plain maternity dress, leggings, overalls, a sweatshirt. That's why I steer people toward removable panels and pinned felt. Unpick the stitches or unclip the label and the dress goes back into your everyday rotation for the rest of the pregnancy.
The felt pieces are worth saving too. A pumpkin leaf, a little skeleton or a pearl circle can be pinned to a baby's sleepsuit next year, which makes a sweet photo next to this year's bump picture.
Let the Bump Pick the Theme
The family costumes that work best treat the bump as part of the group instead of something to hide. Pick a theme that matches your kids' ages and the time you really have for crafting. Stretchy maternity clothes, supportive shoes and flat felt decorations keep the pregnant wearer comfortable, and children need clear vision, short hems and shoes they can walk in. Try every costume on a few days early, especially anything with cardboard, capes, hats or stuck-on pieces. Then go take the photos.
