Dressing three people as one theme is harder than it sounds. You need three roles people can name, clothes everyone can actually walk and sit in, and enough character that nobody feels like an extra. The trios below cover film families, classic Halloween figures, food jokes and simple DIY ideas, and each is planned from head to toe with clothing, hair, makeup, props and shoes. Swap the roles freely to fit your family's ages, sizes and setup; a toddler can be the dinosaur, or a grandparent can be the ringmaster. I build most of these from closet basics, thrift finds and craft felt, so the cost stays sensible whether the third person is a baby, a teenager or another adult.

Start With the Youngest Person's Costume
In a family of three, the child's costume decides how the evening goes, so I plan that one first and fit the adults around it. A baby or toddler should be in something soft that opens for changes and comes off for car seats and naps. That's why a romper, onesie or sweatsuit is the base for most of the kids' roles below.
- Under three: pick the role built on a onesie or sweatsuit, such as the dinosaur, Scooby, a pig or Olaf, and keep face paint to a dot on the nose, if any.
- Preschoolers: let them choose the character, then try the headpiece on at home. If it lasts ten minutes without a fuss, it'll survive the night.
- Older children: give them the role with the props or the most detail; they enjoy the job and they'll look after it.
- Adults: take the costumes that are mostly ordinary clothes, so you can carry, lift and drive in them.
Do one full try-on as a family a week ahead, outside if you can. You'll see straight away whether the colours read together, and whether anything drags, itches or blocks a child's view.
1. The Incredibles Family Costume

The Incredibles is the trio I suggest first to families with one small child, because everyone wears the same red and nobody needs a wig. Adults wear red long-sleeve tops with black leggings or trousers, and the child a red romper or sweatsuit. Add black shorts over the base, a yellow felt belt and a homemade chest emblem. Hair stays tidy for the grown-ups, while Jack-Jack gets a pointed tuft shaped with a dab of child-safe styling cream. Black fabric eye masks are the only makeup, and toddlers usually tolerate a soft mask for a photo better than face paint. Black gloves, tall black socks and comfortable black sneakers finish it. Leave capes at home; it's the costume that suits a long trick-or-treat route.
2. Toy Story Family Costume

Woody, Jessie and Buzz give three roles of equal weight, so no one feels like the sidekick. Woody wears jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, a cowboy hat and brown boots. Jessie takes jeans, a white Western shirt with yellow details, a red hat, a braided red wig and matching boots. Buzz is a white sweatsuit with green and purple felt panels, a soft hood and white sneakers. Rosy cheeks for the cowboys and a touch of silver near the eyes for Buzz is plenty. I'd have the child play Buzz, since a sweatsuit is the warmest and most forgiving of the three. Cardboard sheriff badges, a costume rope and Buzz's felt buttons finish the props.
3. Wizard Of Oz Family Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man are a classic family trio that adapts to any age mix. Dorothy wears a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, braids with blue ribbons, rosy makeup and glittery red flats. The Scarecrow takes brown trousers, a patched shirt, straw-coloured fabric fringe at the cuffs, a floppy hat and brown boots. The Tin Man wears gray clothing with silver fabric panels, a funnel hat and silver sneakers. Keep his silver makeup to the cheeks and nose; full metallic face paint is hot, and children rub it into their eyes. A small basket, a fabric crow and a heart badge make light props. Thermal layers fit under all three when the evening turns cold.
4. Addams Family Costume

The Addams Family looks expensive and is mostly thrifted black clothing. Gomez wears a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, bow tie, polished shoes, slicked-back hair and a neat costume moustache. Morticia takes a black dress with dramatic sleeves, straight black hair or a long wig, pale foundation and deep berry lipstick. Wednesday wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, black tights, flat shoes and two tidy braids. A white collar from a craft store, stitched onto any plain black dress, does the job for a child. Carry one artificial black rose, or a small hand prop for a laugh. I'd shorten Morticia's hem to the ankle if you're walking door to door.
5. Scooby-Doo Family Costume

Fred, Daphne and Scooby mix two outfits from ordinary clothes with one cosy animal suit, which is ideal when the youngest wants to be the dog. Fred wears blue trousers, a white sweater over a blue collared shirt, an orange neck scarf, a blond wig and brown shoes. Daphne takes a purple dress, green scarf, pink tights, lavender flats and a red wig or her own styled hair. Scooby is a brown hooded onesie with soft ears, spotted felt patches, a black nose and a blue collar. If you paint anything on the child, keep it to a little brown on the cheeks. A cardboard mystery map and a magnifying glass tell the story, and fewer props means more hands free for the treat bag.
6. Mario Luigi And Princess Costume

Mario, Luigi and Peach use colours you can find in any store. Mario wears denim overalls, a red shirt, a red cap, white gloves, brown shoes and a rounded moustache; Luigi does the same in green, so the brothers match without being identical. Peach wears a pink dress or a pink top with a full skirt, white gloves, a gold crown, blue earrings, soft blond waves or a wig, and pink flats. Stick-on moustaches lose their grip as the night warms up, so I'd use a little spirit-free costume adhesive or draw one with brown eyeliner for a child. Felt cap emblems and foam coins make safe props, and fitted layers fit under the overalls on a cold night.
7. Peter Pan Family Costume

Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell suit families where the child wants to be a fairy and the grown-ups don't. Peter wears a green tunic over matching leggings, a pointed felt cap, a brown belt and soft brown ankle boots. Wendy takes a pale blue midi dress, a blue hair ribbon, natural makeup and black or blue flats. Tinker Bell wears a green dress with layered leaf-shaped fabric, sheer wings, a blond bun or wig, gold shimmer and green ballet flats. Give Peter a fabric pouch, Wendy a light storybook and Tink a foam star wand. Wings on children are the piece I check hardest: keep them short and fixed with elastic loops over the shoulders so they don't snag on doorways.
8. Frozen Family Costume

Elsa, Anna and Olaf have three very different palettes, so the group reads clearly even in a dark street. Elsa wears an icy blue dress or top and skirt, a pale blond side braid, silver shimmer, a snowflake clip and silver flats. Anna takes a dark blue skirt, black embroidered vest, magenta cape, auburn braided wig, rosy makeup and boots. Olaf is a white sweatshirt and trousers with black felt buttons, a soft carrot nose, a twig headband and white sneakers. For a little Olaf, a white hood beats face paint every time. Snowflake cutouts and a plush snowball are safe accessories. Elsa's gown is the coldest outfit of the three, so hide thermal leggings and a long-sleeve layer underneath.
9. Monsters Inc Family Costume

Sulley, Mike and Boo are comfortable enough for a long evening because two of them are sweatsuits. Sulley wears a turquoise hooded tracksuit or faux-fur onesie with large purple felt spots, soft horns, a little blue on the face and matching sneakers. Mike needs a lime-green sweatshirt and trousers with one oversized felt eye on the torso, a rounded hood and green shoes. Boo wears pink leggings, an oversized pink T-shirt, white sneakers and high pigtails, or her purple monster disguise with fabric eyes and yarn hair. Faux fur sheds on everything, so I'd go with a fleece tracksuit if anyone is sensitive. A light cardboard door is the shared prop, and every felt piece should be stitched flat.
10. Jurassic Park Family Costume

Two park workers and a dinosaur make a trio that works especially well outdoors, at a pumpkin patch or a daytime festival. One adult wears a khaki button-down shirt, cargo shorts or trousers, hiking boots, a utility belt and a wide-brim hat. The other takes a rust-coloured shirt, neutral trousers, tied-back hair, natural makeup and sturdy boots. The child becomes a green dinosaur in a hooded onesie with soft felt teeth, a padded tail and matching sneakers, with only a touch of green on the cheeks. Toy binoculars, a cardboard park badge and a foam egg finish it. I'd shorten the tail so it ends above the heels, since long ones trip kids on steps.
11. Ghostbusters Family Costume

Two Ghostbusters and a friendly ghost give a spooky theme that still feels cheerful. The hunters wear tan coveralls or khaki shirts and cargo trousers, black boots, name patches, goggles and logo badges. Pull hair back into ponytails or under caps and add a little smoky shadow. Build the packs from painted cardboard boxes and paper tubes on elastic straps, and keep them small enough to sit down in. Handheld scanners replace realistic gear. The ghost wears a loose white poncho with a rounded hem, white leggings, white sneakers, lightly powdered hair and a little pale shimmer, with the face uncovered. All that white and khaki disappears at dusk, so add reflective tape to every back.
12. Star Wars Family Costume

Luke, Leia and R2-D2 give a Star Wars family look without any armour to wear. Luke takes cream trousers, a white tunic, a tan belt, brown boots and tousled blond hair. Leia wears a long white dress, a silver belt, white boots, natural makeup and her side buns or a brunette wig. R2-D2 is a white hoodie and trousers with blue and silver felt panels, a rounded fabric hat and white sneakers. For Leia's buns, I braid two sections and coil them over a sock bun or foam ring; that holds far longer than coiled loose hair. A star map, a messenger bag or a silver control panel make harmless props. Keep fabric off the ground and cardboard away from little ones.
13. Alice In Wonderland Family Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit add bright storybook colour to a family of three. Alice wears a light blue dress with a white apron, black headband, white tights, black flats and soft blond waves. The Hatter takes patterned trousers, a bright waistcoat, an oversized bow tie, a colourful jacket, a top hat, an orange wig and sturdy boots, with pink and orange around the eyes. The Rabbit wears white trousers, a red jacket or vest, soft ears, white gloves and white shoes, plus a pink nose and brushed-up brows. A light teacup, a foam pocket watch and a small bottle prop tell the story. Tall hats and ears catch the wind, so I add a hidden elastic under the hair at the back.
14. Winnie The Pooh Family Costume

Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore are built from hoodies and sweatpants, so they're about as comfortable as costumes get. Pooh wears mustard-yellow trousers and a yellow hoodie under a cropped red T-shirt, with round ears and yellow sneakers. Tigger takes an orange tracksuit with black felt stripes, a striped tail, rounded ears, a little orange face shading and black sneakers. Eeyore wears a soft gray onesie with floppy ears, a black yarn mane, a detachable tail and gray shoes. Keep makeup to coloured noses and light cheeks. A fabric honey pot and felt leaves make the props. For toddlers in strollers or children who hate tight or scratchy clothes, I'd pick this trio over anything with a stiff headpiece.
15. Three Little Pigs Family Costume

The Three Little Pigs fits a family of three exactly and needs almost no sewing. Everyone wears pink overalls, dresses or sweatsuits with pink ear headbands, curly felt tails and pink or neutral shoes, plus a small pink circle on the nose and rosy cheeks. Accessories tell the pigs apart: one carries a bundle of raffia straw, one a bunch of brown cardboard sticks, and the third a tool belt with foam bricks. Different shades of pink help too. Pipe cleaner wrapped in pink felt makes a curly tail that holds its curl all night. On a cold evening, layer pink thermals underneath and swap the ear headbands for warm hats with felt ears stitched on.
16. Goldilocks And Two Bears Costume

Goldilocks and two bears is a fairy tale trio that doesn't need a fourth person. Goldilocks wears a yellow or blue dress with a white apron, blond curls or a wig, a ribbon headband, rosy cheeks, white socks and flats. The bears wear matching brown sweatsuits with round felt ears, fuzzy vests, brown sneakers and a simple nose. Tell Mama and Papa apart with a floral scarf, a bow tie, glasses or a small hat. Carry three light bowls in graded sizes and oversized foam-board spoons. If you add bear paws, make them fingerless; grown-ups need their hands for phones and small hands to hold, and kids need theirs for the treat bucket.
17. Bee Beekeeper And Flower Costume

A bee, a beekeeper and a flower give each person a clear part of the same garden story. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black leggings, sheer wings, an antenna headband, yellow shimmer and black sneakers. The beekeeper takes neutral trousers, a white shirt or coverall, boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh around the edge, pinned back so it sits away from the face. The flower wears green with a colourful petal collar, leaf wrist cuffs, rosy makeup and green shoes. I'd cut the petal collar from felt rather than craft foam for a small child, because foam edges press into the neck. A watering can, a plush bee and a toy flowerpot finish it.
18. Farmer Cow And Pig Costume

A farmer, a cow and a pig is the trio I'd suggest to families with a baby or toddler, since animals are easy to make from a romper. The farmer wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, a straw hat, a red neckerchief, freckles and brown work boots. The cow takes white clothing with black felt spots, soft ears, small horns, a pink nose, black sneakers and a detachable tail. The pig wears a pink romper or sweatsuit, round ears, a curly tail, rosy cheeks and pink shoes. Skip the pitchfork for a small basket of fake vegetables or a plush chick. Attach animal pieces with snaps or hook-and-loop tape so they come off for car seats and naps.
19. Circus Ringmaster Clown And Lion Costume

A ringmaster, a clown and a lion turn a family into a travelling circus with three strong colour stories. The ringmaster wears black trousers, a red military-style jacket with gold trim, a top hat, curled hair, bold liner and polished black boots. The clown takes bright overalls, a striped shirt, braces, colourful sneakers, a small hat, rosy cheeks and a painted red nose, kept cheerful and light. The lion wears a tan sweatsuit, a soft fabric mane, rounded ears, a brown nose, a tufted tail and tan sneakers. I make the mane from fleece strips knotted onto a hood, which stays soft and doesn't shed like faux fur. A light hoop, a ticket roll and a striped popcorn box finish it.
20. Astronaut Alien And Rocket Costume

An astronaut, an alien and a rocket make a space family that's fun to walk the street in. The astronaut wears a white coverall or sweatsuit with silver tape, mission patches, white sneakers and a light foam helmet, with hair tucked back and a little silver shimmer. The alien takes a green or lavender outfit, an antenna headband, metallic cheeks, gloves and matching shoes. The rocket is built on a child's gray or white outfit with a soft tube-shaped tunic, red felt fins and fabric flames ending above the knees. For any child's helmet, I cut a wide face opening so it never blocks side vision on a kerb. A foam moon or cardboard control panel is the shared prop, and the silver tape doubles as reflective trim.
21. Sun Cloud And Rainbow Costume

A sun, a cloud and a rainbow give a bright weather trio built from soft layers. The sun wears a yellow dress or sweatsuit with a light ray collar, a gold headband, yellow shimmer and yellow sneakers. The cloud takes pale blue or white with flat cotton-look fabric puffs, a little silver shimmer, a cloud headpiece and white shoes, plus a few blue felt raindrops. The rainbow wears stripes in all six colours with bright hair clips, cheek dots and neutral sneakers. Glued cotton wool falls off within an hour outdoors, which is why I sew on fleece puffs instead. Keep the sun's ray collar soft and below the chin, and add a small sun bag.
22. S’mores Family Costume

S'mores is a funny family idea because it only works when all three stand together. The graham cracker wears tan clothing under two square foam-board panels marked with dotted cracker details, plus brown sneakers. The chocolate takes dark brown trousers and shirt with a segmented fabric tunic, brown shoes and slicked hair. The marshmallow wears a rounded white tunic over white leggings, white sneakers, fluffy earmuffs and a little pearly shimmer. Line them up in order for photos and everyone gets the joke. I keep every panel above the knee with wide shoulder straps, since thin ties dig in within an hour. A camping lantern or felt campfire makes a safe shared prop.
23. Bacon Eggs And Toast Costume

A breakfast trio of bacon, eggs and toast is almost all felt and basics. The bacon wears red under a long wavy tunic striped with cream felt, red sneakers and matching hair clips. The egg takes a white top and trousers with a large yellow circle on a soft white poncho, yellow shadow and white shoes. Toast wears tan with a rounded bread-shaped tunic edged in darker brown crust, brown boots or sneakers and neutral makeup. Add headbands shaped like a tomato slice or a butter pat for extra fun. Fabric glue holds felt to felt well, but I stitch anything that bends at the shoulder, where glue cracks. Keep panels short enough for stairs.
24. Rock Paper Scissors Costume

Rock, paper, scissors is cheap and clever, and the hand-game pose explains it in a second. Rock wears gray under a light, lumpy foam tunic painted in a few stone grays, with gray hair spray, silver cheeks and gray sneakers. Paper takes an all-white outfit with a fabric panel lined in faint blue, a folded paper-style headband and white shoes. Scissors wears silver trousers, a gray shirt and a soft crossed-loop panel that sits flat on the torso, with metallic hair clips. Temporary hair spray rubs off onto collars and pillows, so I'd keep it for adults or skip it for kids. Every edge should be rounded foam or fabric.
25. Traffic Light Family Costume

A traffic light gives each person one solid colour, which makes it easy to shop for. The red person wears a red sweatshirt, trousers or skirt, a round chest panel, red hair accessories, rosy makeup and red sneakers; repeat in yellow and green for the other two. Matching black vests or rectangular tunics link the three, with each circle placed at the same height so the lights line up when you stand together. Or let each person be one glowing signal on their own. Black caps, reflective wristbands and small cardboard street signs finish it, with any sign poles short and soft. Because each person just wears comfortable clothes in their colour, it suits any age mix.
26. Garden Gnome Mushroom And Fairy Costume

A gnome, a mushroom and a fairy make a woodland family with plenty of handmade detail. The gnome wears brown trousers, a blue tunic, a wide belt, a red pointed hat, a soft white beard, rosy cheeks and sturdy boots. The mushroom takes cream clothing with a red capelet or rounded hat covered in white felt spots, a little red near the eyes and beige shoes. The fairy wears a green or floral dress over leggings, translucent wings, a flower crown, shimmer and flat ankle boots. The gnome's beard is the item I fit first: a beard on an elastic over the ears itches, while one hooked to the hat brim stays comfortable. Keep the mushroom hat narrow enough for doorways.
27. Skeleton Family Costume

Matching skeletons are classic and can be playful rather than scary. Start with three black long-sleeve shirts and matching trousers, then add white felt bones or paint them on with fabric paint. Fabric paint stays flexible after washing, and felt bones peel if they're only glued, so I paint the ribs and stitch any felt. Give each person a different accent colour in a bow tie, a tutu, braces or ribbons. Keep white face makeup light around the eyes and cheeks with simple black lines for a smiling skull, and nothing realistic. Neat buns, braids or slicked hair and black sneakers with white laces finish it. Add reflective strips to the backs, and warm layers fit easily underneath.
28. Vampire Family Costume

A vampire family works with velvet, high collars and dramatic makeup, all without blood. One vampire wears black trousers, a white shirt, a burgundy vest, a high-collared cape, slicked hair and polished boots. Another takes a long black dress, a red shawl, dark waves, berry lipstick, smoky eyes and heeled or flat boots. The youngest wears black trousers, a white blouse, a red bow tie, a short cape and black sneakers. Pale foundation, defined brows and small costume fangs do the rest, with no bite marks. Children's capes should hit the back of the knee at most and fasten with a snap, never a tie at the throat. Jewelled brooches and old-style keys make the props.
29. Witch Cat And Pumpkin Costume

A witch, a black cat and a pumpkin put three Halloween symbols together. The witch wears a black dress or blouse with a full skirt, purple tights, a pointed hat, silver eye makeup and buckled ankle boots, with a small soft-bristled broom. The cat takes a black sweatshirt and leggings, flexible ears, a detachable tail, whiskers and black sneakers. The pumpkin wears an orange hoodie and trousers with a felt jack-o'-lantern face, a green leaf collar, orange cheeks and orange shoes, with a friendly expression. Whiskers drawn in soft brown eyeliner pencil smudge less than liquid liner on a child's face. Repeat purple or green accessories across all three to tie them together.
30. Minecraft Family Costume

Steve, Alex and a Creeper make a blocky Minecraft family from cardboard, felt and bright basics. Steve wears a turquoise shirt, blue trousers, gray sneakers and a square cardboard headpiece with pixel brown hair. Alex takes a green shirt, brown trousers, orange pixel hair or a light wig and dark boots. The Creeper wears a green sweatsuit covered in squares of several greens, a soft cube hood, green face accents and matching sneakers. I'd never put a child in a fully enclosed box head; cut a large open face and line the inside edge with felt so it doesn't scrape. Foam cubes and pixel gems make safe props, and fabric straps under the chin keep headpieces steady outdoors.
Felt, Foam and Glue That Hold Up Until Bedtime
Most of these trios rely on felt shapes and foam panels, and the most common failure I see is a spot, button or label dropping off halfway down the street. A few habits prevent it:
- Stitch felt onto clothing that stretches, like sweatshirts and leggings. Glue goes stiff and cracks where the fabric moves.
- Use fabric glue for felt on felt, and leave it to dry overnight before anyone wears it.
- Hot glue is fine on cardboard and foam board, but it lets go in cold night air on fabric. Don't rely on it for anything a child will tug.
- Craft foam sheets bend without creasing, so they suit helmets, collars and wearable props better than card on a crowded street.
Lights, Shoes and Pockets for the Walk
Many of these costumes are dark or neutral, which disappears at dusk. I add reflective tape to every back and a small clip-on light to each treat bag, and a glow bracelet helps parents spot a small child in a crowd. Shoes matter just as much: everyone should wear sneakers or boots they've already walked in, because new shoes and a long route mean blisters by the third street. Give each adult one costume piece with a pocket, or a small bag that suits the character, for phones, keys, wipes and the costume bits a tired child will hand you halfway home.
Three Roles, One Walk Around the Block
A family trio works when all three people have a role others can name and a costume they can live in for the evening. Think about the weather, how far you'll walk, how the youngest copes with hats and paint, and how well everyone can see. Soft felt, flexible foam, ordinary clothes and supportive shoes make even an ambitious theme practical. Roles don't need to follow age or gender, so let personality pick the characters. Repeat one colour or detail across the three, keep props light and makeup simple, and your family will look connected in every photo while still having a good time.
