Inseam, Rise and Wash Before Anything Else
Every outfit below depends on the shorts underneath it fitting properly, and most fit problems come down to three measurements. When I pull shorts for a client, I check them in this order.
Inseam
A 2 to 3 inch inseam is a true cutoff; 4 to 5 inches lands around mid-thigh; 7 inches and up is a Bermuda length. Shorter inseams lengthen the leg but ride up when you sit or walk a lot. If you're tall, a 4 inch inseam often looks like a 3 inch one on someone shorter, so try the brand's longer cut first.
Rise
High rise sits at or near the navel and makes tucking easy, which most of the outfits here rely on. Mid rise is more comfortable for long sitting. Low rise rarely works with tucked tops because the tuck has nowhere to land.
Wash
Light wash reads casual, medium wash goes almost anywhere, and dark wash with a clean hem is the only one I'd send to a relaxed office or an evening event. Black and white shorts behave like neutrals and pair with prints the most easily.
1. Start#

Denim shorts do more work in a summer closet than anything else I hang in one. They go with a basic tank and a silk blouse, a beach day and a backyard barbecue. The trouble is that most people wear them the same way every time. A different top, a different shoe or a better tuck turns a pair of cutoffs into an outfit that looks chosen. Below are 30 complete looks, from frayed light-wash pairs to dark, clean-hemmed ones, with notes on where each tends to go wrong.
1. White Button-Down and Denim Shorts Outfit

A crisp white button-down with light-wash shorts is the first outfit I build for anyone starting a summer wardrobe. Tuck it loosely, roll the sleeves to the elbow, leave the top two buttons open and add a thin leather belt. Leather slides and a woven tote finish it. Cotton poplin is the right shirt fabric here; it stays crisp in heat where a polyester blend turns clammy. If the shirt is long, tuck only the front so the back tail doesn't bunch over the seat. Swap in espadrilles and it goes to brunch or a relaxed office.
2. Black Tank Top and Distressed Denim Shorts Outfit

Distressed shorts carry enough texture that the top should do nothing at all, so a fitted black tank is the right partner. Medium wash, raw hems, flat leather sandals, a fine gold chain and black aviators. That's the whole outfit. I'd pick a high-waisted pair and tuck the tank just enough to show the waistband hardware, which lengthens the leg. Check the rips by sitting down in the fitting room; some open far wider seated than standing. Keep a long cardigan in the bag for when the evening cools.
3. Oversized Blazer and Denim Shorts Outfit

An oversized blazer over shorts sounds odd until you see the proportion: long, structured top, bare legs, and a clean break between them. A white ribbed tank goes under a black or beige blazer, with faded shorts ending mid-thigh and sleek white sneakers. Carry a structured bag. The blazer should end at or just below the shorts' hem, never longer, or it looks like you forgot your bottoms. Loafers instead of sneakers make it fine for a gallery or an early patio dinner.
4. Linen Shirt and Light Wash Denim Shorts Outfit

On humid days I reach for linen before anything else, because it pulls moisture off the skin and dries fast. A loose linen shirt in sand, white or soft sage over a simple tank, with light-wash shorts, flat leather sandals and a canvas tote, keeps the whole palette light. Linen creases the moment you sit, and I'd tell you to let it; pressed linen looks stiff anyway. Tuck the front for some shape or leave it out. It's built for beachside lunches and slow vacation afternoons.
5. Fitted Tee and High-Waisted Denim Shorts Outfit

With only a tee and shorts, every small detail shows, so I fuss over the tuck. A fitted white or cream tee goes into high-waisted shorts with a neat front tuck, a slim belt and minimal gold jewelry. White canvas sneakers or low-profile trainers keep it walkable. Dark wash reads tidier; light wash says weekend. A crossbody across the chest and sunglasses on your head make it practical for playground duty, a picnic or a day of shopping.
6. Crop Top and Relaxed Denim Shorts Outfit

Relaxed shorts with a crop top balance skin with ease: the looser leg offsets the bare midriff. A beige ribbed crop top with light-wash relaxed shorts, flat sandals, a straw hat and a canvas tote is the version I like best. The waistband should sit flat without digging in, so I always check it seated. If you want less skin, a higher rise closes the gap without changing the look. Good for a boardwalk walk or a sunset dinner outdoors.
7. Graphic Tee and Frayed Denim Shorts Outfit

Graphic tees come out better slightly oversized and half-tucked, so the print sits at the chest instead of stretching. Tuck one side or just the front into high-waisted frayed shorts that end around mid-thigh, and add a simple leather belt and white low-top sneakers. A baseball cap and sunglasses keep it off duty. Vintage tees are often thinner cotton and shrink in a hot dryer, so I'd air-dry them. It suits a festival, a food truck lunch or a long day in a new city.
8. Off-Shoulder Top and Denim Shorts Outfit

Off-shoulder tops live or die by their elastic. If it's loose, you spend the day pulling it up, so I raise both arms in the fitting room before I buy. Soft cotton or eyelet is the fabric to look for. Light-wash raw-hem shorts, flat sandals or espadrilles and a small crossbody keep it clean, with delicate earrings and some lip color. It's a natural pick for evening beach walks and patio brunch.
9. Denim Jacket and Denim Shorts Double Denim Outfit

Double denim only works when the two washes clearly differ. A medium-wash jacket over light-wash shorts, or a faded jacket over dark high-waisted shorts, both read as deliberate. Matching washes look like a suit that went wrong. A white tank or tee under it keeps it light, with white sneakers or flat sandals and a crossbody. Roll the jacket sleeves. It's the outfit I'd pick for a cool summer morning or a beach bonfire after dark.
10. Plaid Shirt and Black Denim Shorts Outfit

A plaid shirt open over a fitted gray tank and black denim shorts gives you some edge without going full grunge. Chunky black sandals keep it summery; low-profile combat boots push it harder. Pick slightly distressed shorts and finish with silver jewelry and dark sunglasses. When it heats up, the shirt ties around the waist. Wear boots with shorts only on a cooler day, because leather boots with bare legs get hot fast. Great for outdoor concerts and road trips.
11. Sweater and Denim Shorts Transitional Outfit

A lightweight knit tucked into high-waisted shorts is how I stretch shorts into September. Cotton or linen-blend knits in oatmeal, rust or dusty blue breathe better than wool and won't make your legs feel underdressed. Brown leather sandals or suede ankle boots bridge the seasons, and a woven bag keeps it from turning autumnal. Tuck only the front if the knit is thick; a full tuck adds a ridge at the waistband. Push the sleeves up and add a pendant for a rooftop drink or patio dinner.
12. Bodysuit and High-Waisted Denim Shorts Outfit

A bodysuit solves the problem of a top that keeps coming untucked. It sits flat under high-waisted shorts with no extra fabric at the waist. Black or white is the most flexible; coral or turquoise works for summer. Flat sandals keep it casual, heeled mules make it date-ready, and hoops with a light necklace add some shine. Stretch shorts are kinder here, since a bodysuit already fits close. Check the snap closure is flat, because a bulky one shows through denim.
13. Tank Top and Cuffed Denim Shorts Outfit

Cuffed shorts look a little more finished than cutoffs, and the cuff gives you room to adjust the length to your leg. A ribbed tank tucked in, flat strappy sandals and a bucket bag keep you hands-free. Neutral tanks feel minimal, bright ones feel summery, and a few fine necklaces fill the neckline. Roll the cuff twice at most; any more and it stiffens and flares out. It's an easy pick for the park or a flea market.
14. Blouse and Denim Shorts Office Outfit

Shorts at the office depend completely on your workplace, so I'd only try this where the dress code is truly relaxed. A silky blouse in dusty mauve or ivory, fully tucked into dark-wash shorts with no distressing, plus a slim belt and heeled sandals or sleek loafers to sharpen it. Add a structured handbag and stud earrings. Dark denim reads far more professional than light. The shorts should reach mid-thigh or lower. It works on summer Fridays and for relaxed client lunches.
15. Polo Shirt and White Denim Shorts Outfit

White shorts with a navy polo give you a crisp preppy contrast. The polo collar adds just enough structure, and white canvas sneakers or boat shoes push it toward the water. A leather belt joins the two pieces, and a simple watch with sunglasses is all it needs. Pick mid-rise, straight-leg white shorts with thick enough denim that pockets don't show through. It fits a barbecue, a round of golf or a coastal day out.
16. Tied Button-Down Shirt and Denim Shorts Outfit

Tying a shirt at the waist is my fix for button-downs that are too long for shorts. Chambray or cotton poplin in a soft stripe or solid knots neatly over high-rise shorts and gives the outfit a clear waist. Slides or espadrilles and a straw bag keep it light; leave the collar open a button or two. Tie the knot at your natural waist or just above the waistband; a knot sitting low on the hip shortens the legs. Good for vacation days and outdoor lunches.
17. Camisole and Denim Shorts Outfit

A silk or lace-trimmed camisole is the softest thing you can put next to denim, and the contrast is the point. Tuck it into medium-wash shorts with clean hems, not heavy distressing, so it stays balanced. Flat sandals, a woven crossbody, simple gold jewelry and soft waves finish it. Silk shows sweat marks quickly, so I'd keep this for evenings: a casual dinner, a sunset walk or a wine bar patio. Bring a light cardigan or linen shirt for later.
18. Striped Tee and Denim Shorts Outfit

A Breton stripe tee with denim shorts is about as reliable a summer pairing as I know. Navy and white stripes give the graphic element, the shorts keep it relaxed, and canvas sneakers or espadrilles carry the coastal mood. A red lip or a red hair accessory adds a hit of color. Tuck the front into high-rise shorts for shape or wear it loose. Real Breton tees are thick cotton, so they hold their shape after many washes. A light tote and big sunglasses finish it for a seaside market.
19. Boho Kimono and Denim Shorts Outfit

A printed kimono over a tank and frayed shorts gives you movement and some sun coverage on your shoulders. Floral or geometric prints both work; let it hang open to show the plain base underneath. Flat leather sandals, a wide-brimmed hat and layered beaded necklaces keep the bohemian feel. Keep the shorts simple so the kimono doesn't overwhelm. If you're petite, choose a kimono that ends at the hip, since a long one can drown a small frame. Ideal for festivals and beach markets.
20. Sports Bra and Denim Shorts Athleisure Outfit

A sports bra as a top works when the shorts are structured and the colors stay simple. High-waisted denim shorts give support and coverage, and a light zip-up or an open windbreaker on top adds more. Clean white sneakers, a baseball cap and a sleek backpack finish it. Black, white and gray always match; pastel bras with matching shorts are fresh too. Denim doesn't stretch much, so I'd skip it for a real workout and keep it for the walk to the smoothie bar after.
21. Peplum Top and Denim Shorts Outfit

A peplum top defines the waist on its own, which makes it useful for anyone who wants shape without a belt. Tuck it into slim-cut light-wash shorts with clean hems and the flared hem sits just over the waistband. Heeled sandals or wedges, a small structured bag and delicate earrings make it dressy enough for a baby shower or an afternoon garden party. Peplums suit straight figures best; if you're already curvy through the hip, a smaller flare looks more balanced.
22. Off-Shoulder Blouse and Denim Shorts Outfit

Ruffles and rips sound like a clash, but an off-shoulder blouse with distressed shorts mixes romance and edge in a way that works. Soft white, blush or light blue eyelet with ruffled details tucks loosely at the front of the shorts. Flat gladiator sandals or heeled mules, a fringe crossbody and simple hoops finish it, plus some bronzer for a sun-kissed glow. Eyelet holes catch on fringe bags, so wear the bag on the opposite side. It suits festivals and outdoor dinner parties.
23. Chambray Shirt and Denim Shorts Outfit

Chambray with denim shorts is a tonal blue outfit, and it only looks deliberate if the two shades are clearly different. I hold them together in daylight before I commit. Wear the chambray open over a white tank with sleeves rolled, untucked. Brown leather sandals and a cognac belt add warmth, and a canvas tote keeps it casual. It flatters most shapes because the open shirt creates a long vertical line. It's my go-to for weekend errands and brewery patios.
24. Floral Top and Denim Shorts Outfit

Florals give denim shorts some cheer, and the scale of the print changes the mood completely. Small prints read subtle and grown-up; big blooms feel bold and vacation-ready. Wear a floral blouse or camisole loosely tucked or tied at the front, with flat tan sandals, a woven bag, a simple pendant and studs. If the print has several colors, pick your sandals in the darkest of them to ground it. It's good for a daytime event or a casual date.
25. Turtleneck and Denim Shorts Fall Transition Outfit

A turtleneck with shorts is a late-summer trick, and it looks modern precisely because it covers the top and leaves the legs bare. A lightweight camel or cream turtleneck with dark-wash shorts, no distressing, keeps it refined. Ankle boots or loafers, a structured shoulder bag, a long pendant and dark sunglasses finish it. The knit must be fine and thin; a heavy rollneck with shorts just looks confused about the weather. It's for those days when the forecast can't decide.
26. Graphic Sweatshirt and Denim Shorts Outfit

A vintage-style graphic sweatshirt over high-waisted shorts is my favorite outfit for a cool summer night. Size it slightly oversized and push the sleeves to the elbow so it doesn't look bundled. Faded colors and retro prints feel the most real. Raw-hem shorts, white sneakers and a belt bag or backpack keep it sporty. The sweatshirt should cover the waistband but stop well above the shorts' hem, or the shorts vanish. Perfect for a bonfire or an outdoor movie.
27. Vest and Denim Shorts Outfit

Vests are an underrated summer layer because they add structure with no sleeves to trap heat. A lightweight utility or linen vest in khaki, olive or cream over a fitted or tucked tee, with frayed shorts, flat sandals or espadrilles and a crossbody, gives you pockets and polish at once. Utility vests can look boxy on a petite frame, so I'd pick one that ends at the hip. It works for sightseeing and outdoor lunches.
28. Lace Top and Denim Shorts Outfit

Lace next to raw-hem denim gives you soft against rugged, and the lace should be the only detail. Ivory, blush or a soft pastel lace top tucked into high-waisted shorts, neutral sandals, a simple shoulder bag, drop earrings and a soft updo. Keep everything else minimal. Lace tops often need a camisole or a smooth bra in your skin tone underneath. Wear it to a summer bridal shower, a garden party or a dinner when you want to dress up without a dress.
29. Blazer and Denim Shorts Smart Casual Outfit

A tailored blazer over a tank and dark shorts is the smartest way I know to wear shorts in the evening. The blazer sharpens everything, while the shorts stop it from looking like office wear. Black, navy or a soft pastel blazer works; keep the shorts clean and structured. Heeled sandals or pointed-toe flats lengthen the leg, and a sleek clutch with statement earrings or a bold necklace replaces heavier accessories. Lined blazers get warm, so I'd look for an unlined or half-lined one for rooftop evenings.
30. Printed Tee and Denim Shorts Outfit
A printed tee with shorts is the easiest summer outfit there is, and that's exactly why it's worth getting right. Slogans, graphics and retro designs all work; the tee brings the personality and the shorts the structure. White sneakers, a denim jacket tied at the waist, sunglasses and a cap complete it. Distressed shorts add texture; clean-cut ones look sharper. A jacket tied at the waist adds bulk at the hips, so skip it if that's an area you'd rather keep slim. Great for theme parks and ice cream runs.
Cutting Old Jeans Into Shorts at Home
Some of the best cutoffs come from jeans that have stopped fitting at the knee. Rigid, 100 percent cotton denim frays into the soft, even fringe you see in the photos; stretch denim tends to curl and fray thin.
- Put the jeans on and mark the length with chalk about an inch longer than you want, since the hem frays and shrinks up.
- Take them off, fold in half so the legs match, and cut both legs at once with a slight upward angle toward the outer seam. That angle keeps the inner leg from looking longer.
- Wash and dry them once on a normal cycle to start the fray, then trim any long threads.
- If you want a cuffed hem instead, cut two inches longer and roll twice, then press the roll flat with a hot iron.
Cut too short and there's no going back, so I always try a pair on again after the first wash before trimming any more.
Small Swaps That Change a Pair of Shorts
A single pair of denim shorts can carry a blazer, a silk camisole and sporty athleisure moments alike. What decides the outcome is proportion, wash and how the top talks to the shoes. Swapping sandals for sneakers or tucking a shirt instead of leaving it loose shifts the whole tone. If I had to start with only three tops for a pair of shorts, I'd choose a white button-down, a fine knit and a fitted tank, then build from there as the weather changes.
