Once it's too hot for jeans, denim shorts do more work than anything else in a summer closet. The trouble is that most of us wear them the same way every day. When I go through a client's summer wardrobe, I usually find one good pair of medium-wash cutoffs and one pair of white or Bermuda-length shorts can cover nearly every plan, from a casual office to a beach weekend, as long as the top and shoes change. Here are 25 outfits built around those shorts, and most of them use pieces you probably own already.

Fitting Denim Shorts at the Rise and Leg Opening
Most denim shorts that feel wrong are wrong in one of two places: the rise or the leg opening. Length gets the attention, but these two decide whether shorts ride up, gape or cut in.
Rise
A high rise sits at or above the navel and is the easiest to tuck into. A mid rise sits a little lower and suits shorter torsos, which a high rise can make look cramped. Sit down in the fitting room. If the waistband digs in or gapes at the back, the rise is wrong for your shape, whatever the size label says.
Leg opening
- Slim openings ride up toward the crotch as you walk, especially on fuller thighs.
- A slightly wider, A-line opening hangs straight and stays put.
- Aim for about two fingers of space between thigh and hem when standing.
- Rigid cotton denim gives a little with wear; stretch denim loosens more, so buy stretch pairs snug.
1. White T-Shirt And Denim Shorts Outfit

Everyone has worn this on a Saturday without thinking about it, and a couple of small choices make it look deliberate. A slightly oversized white cotton tee with just the front tucked into mid-rise light-wash shorts shows your waist without the stiffness of a full tuck. Roll the sleeves once. White leather sneakers repeat the white of the tee, which carries the eye top to bottom and makes you look taller. A canvas tote, a thin gold chain, black sunglasses and a cap finish it for market runs and coffee walks. Cheap white tees go see-through after a few washes, so a heavier cotton is worth the small extra cost.
2. Oversized Button-Down Shirt And Denim Shorts

An oversized button-down worn open over a fitted tank gives you sun coverage without adding heat. I like white or light blue striped poplin, sleeves pushed to the elbow, over a white ribbed tank tucked into high-waisted shorts. Flat leather slides and a structured crossbody keep it neat for travel days and shopping. The open shirt makes two long vertical lines down the body, which lengthens the torso. Just check the shirt length: it should end around the top of the thigh, so a little of the shorts still shows below it.
3. Crop Top And High-Waisted Denim Shorts

A ribbed crop top with high-waisted shorts is one of the most flattering summer combinations, provided the two meet at the right place. The shorts should sit at your natural waist and the top should end at or just above the waistband, so only a sliver of skin shows. Ivory or soft beige with light-wash denim looks airy; chunky white sneakers, a mini shoulder bag, layered gold necklaces, hoops and cat-eye sunglasses keep it casual for concerts and rooftop afternoons. If you're long in the torso, look for shorts with an extra-high rise, or the gap between top and shorts grows wider than you'd planned.
4. Blazer And Denim Shorts Outfit

A blazer turns denim shorts into smart-casual. I'd choose a relaxed linen-blend blazer in beige or charcoal over a white tank or fitted tee, with mid-length shorts that have a clean hem; heavy rips and a blazer fight each other. Pointed mules or low block heels, a sleek shoulder bag and simple gold jewelry suit a creative office or a dinner reservation. Wear the blazer open. Buttoned, it hides the waist and the shorts disappear underneath, so it looks like you've forgotten your trousers. On cool evenings, swap the tank for a light crewneck knit.
5. Bodysuit And Denim Shorts Outfit

Bodysuits solve the main problem with tucked tops: they don't untuck. A square or scoop neck in black, white or a soft neutral, tucked into high-waisted medium or dark-wash shorts, gives the cleanest line on this list. Strappy flat sandals, a woven crossbody and fine layered necklaces work for daytime; block-heel mules and a bold lip take it to a patio dinner. Check the fit through the torso before buying. A bodysuit that's too short pulls down on the shoulders and rides up at the leg all day, and long-waisted women often need a tall length.
6. Tank Top With Denim Shorts Summer Outfit

Tank and shorts is the most basic summer uniform, which is exactly why the details matter. Pick a fitted racerback or scoop-neck tank in ivory, oatmeal or washed black and tuck it into high-waisted shorts with a worn-in wash. Flat leather sandals or simple flip-flops and a big tote handle the day. Accessories make it look styled: gold hoops, a couple of slim rings and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Tie a light cotton cardigan or chambray shirt around your shoulders for cold air conditioning. Ribbed cotton tanks stretch at the armholes over a season, so I buy them a little snug.
7. Graphic Tee And Distressed Denim Shorts

A graphic tee gives distressed denim shorts some personality. I'd go for a vintage band or retro logo tee, slightly oversized, with a loose front tuck into ripped high-waisted shorts. White low-top sneakers, a black leather belt, hoops and a mini backpack or crossbody suit theme parks and road trips. For cooler evenings, add a denim jacket or open flannel, and switch to combat boots if you want it tougher. Heavy distressing near the pockets tends to tear further in the wash, so turn these shorts inside out and use a cool cycle.
8. Off-Shoulder Top And Denim Shorts

Off-shoulder tops soften denim's ruggedness. The bare collarbone and shoulders give an easy elegance that suits date nights and vacations. A light cotton or linen blend in white, soft blue or a small floral works with high-waisted cutoffs with a clean hem. Strappy flat sandals or espadrille wedges, a straw bag and a fine pendant finish it; pull your hair back loosely so the neckline shows. It moves from sightseeing to sunset drinks without a change. If you carry a shoulder bag, the strap will keep pulling the neckline down, so a crossbody worn on the diagonal or a handheld bag is easier.
9. Linen Shirt And Denim Shorts Outfit

Linen is the coolest fabric you can put over denim shorts when the humidity climbs, because the loose weave lets air move. A relaxed linen shirt in white, sand or sage, loosely tucked into light-wash shorts with the sleeves rolled below the elbow and a few buttons open, looks polished without heat. Brown leather or woven slides, a leather belt, a simple watch and a raffia tote keep the palette warm. It suits market mornings and outdoor lunches. Linen wrinkles as soon as you sit, so I'd accept the creases rather than fight them; they're part of why the outfit looks relaxed.
10. Floral Blouse And Denim Shorts Outfit

A soft floral blouse takes the edge off denim. Small-scale prints with a gentle puff sleeve, a tie front or a little ruffle trim work best with clean medium-wash high-waisted shorts. Keep the blouse loose. Strappy heeled sandals or ballet flats, a small shoulder bag and pearl or gold studs suit bridal shower brunches and garden parties. A full tuck looks more polished; untucked reads as a weekend look. Check how sheer the blouse is in sunlight. Light floral fabrics often show a bra outline, so a nude bra or a cami underneath helps.
11. Denim Shirt And Denim Shorts Outfit

Denim on denim works when the washes are clearly different. Pair a light chambray or denim shirt, worn open over a white tank or tee, with darker shorts, so the two pieces don't look like a failed match. Roll the sleeves, add brown sandals or white sneakers, a braided leather belt and a crossbody. On a cool evening, button it partway and knot it at the waist for a cropped shape. The belt matters here more than usual. It breaks the column of blue and shows where the top ends and the shorts begin.
12. White Denim Shorts Summer Outfit

White denim shorts look crisper than blue and pair naturally with a coastal palette. A navy-and-white striped boatneck tee or a soft pastel blouse keeps it fresh, with tan leather sandals or canvas espadrilles. A straw fedora, gold hoops and a woven tote suit beach lunches and boardwalk walks. For evening, go tonal: a cream silk cami with nude heeled sandals makes a long, quiet line. Before buying, check the pockets. White denim often shows the pocket bags through the front, so I look for a heavier weight or pocket linings in a skin tone.
13. Black Denim Shorts And Neutral Top

Black denim shorts are the pair that goes furthest into the evening. A beige or oatmeal ribbed tank tucked into high-waisted black shorts gives strong contrast; flat black slides or chunky platforms keep it grounded. A tan or cognac leather bag warms the dark palette, and silver hoops, layered chains and dark sunglasses suit gallery visits and city days. Add an oversized white shirt or light denim jacket for cooler moments. Black denim fades with every wash. Wash it inside out in cold water with similar colors and it will stay dark much longer.
14. Striped Top And Denim Shorts Outfit

Stripes and denim shorts are about as foolproof as summer gets. A Breton-style boatneck with navy horizontal stripes, or a light striped button-down, tucked into high-waisted raw-hem shorts goes with almost everything. Tan slides or canvas sneakers, a straw market tote and a red lip make it a two-minute outfit for travel days and last-minute lunches. Add a beige cardigan over the shoulders and espadrille wedges for a breezy evening on the coast. Stripe width changes the effect. Narrow stripes look neat and suit most frames; wide stripes add visible width across the chest.
15. Bermuda Denim Shorts Outfit

Bermuda-length denim gives more coverage and looks tailored rather than beachy. The hem should land just above the knee. A medium-wash Bermuda with a crisp white button-down tucked in neatly and a slim black or brown belt looks ready for a casual office or lunch meeting. Loafers or backless mules, a structured top-handle bag and a gold watch keep it smart. On weekends, swap to a fitted knit tank and flat sandals. Longer shorts need a fitted top to stay balanced; with a loose tee they can look like you've borrowed someone else's.
16. Denim Cutoff Shorts With Crochet Top

Crochet and frayed denim are both handmade-looking textures, and they sit naturally together. A short-sleeve or sleeveless crochet top in cream, sage or terracotta with high-waisted frayed cutoffs suits festivals and outdoor markets. Flat lace-up sandals or crochet flats, a woven bucket bag and a beaded necklace finish it, with gold hoops. Wear a fitted nude tank or bandeau underneath. Crochet stitches snag on the metal rivets and button of denim shorts, so tuck it only loosely or leave it out entirely.
17. Kimono And Denim Shorts Outfit

A printed kimono over a white tank and high-waisted shorts adds color and arm coverage without trapping heat. A light floral, paisley or geometric print is easy to coordinate with neutral base layers. Flat tan sandals or nude heeled slides keep the print in charge, with a pendant and slim bracelets. It's dressy enough for resort lunches and garden parties without a dress. Pick a kimono that ends at mid-thigh or longer. A short one cuts across the hips at the same line as the shorts and makes both look boxy.
18. Knit Sweater And Denim Shorts Outfit

A fine cotton or linen-blend sweater makes sense with shorts on cool summer mornings and breezy evenings by the water. A relaxed crewneck or V-neck in oatmeal, dove gray or pale blue, front-tucked into high-waisted shorts, balances the soft knit with the denim. Flat leather mules or white sneakers, a tote and simple gold jewelry suit beach bonfires and late-summer road trips. Keep the knit light. A heavy wool sweater over shorts looks out of season and sits bulky at the waist where you tuck it.
19. Denim Shorts With White Sneakers Outfit

White sneakers make denim shorts look clean and sporty, and they're the shoe I'd choose for a long walking day. Medium-wash high-waisted shorts with a white or gray crewneck tee tucked at the front, plus low-profile white leather sneakers, keep the line slim. A canvas tote or nylon crossbody, a cap, slim gold hoops and retro sunglasses finish it for theme parks and weekend exploring. Swap to a striped long-sleeve top when fog rolls in. For long walks, wear the sneakers with no-show socks; bare feet in leather sneakers rub and blister in heat.
20. Denim Shorts With Flat Sandals Outfit

Flat sandals are the easiest shoe for shorts, and they make the leg look longer by leaving the ankle bare. Minimal leather slides in tan, black or cognac with high-waisted light-wash shorts and a cotton tank or peasant blouse cover beach-town walks and vacation days. A woven crossbody, a fine anklet and big sunglasses finish it. Good leather is the upgrade that matters here. Cheap synthetic slides get slippery with sweat and rub across the top of the foot, while real leather softens and molds to you over a few wears.
21. Denim Shorts With Heeled Sandals Outfit

Heels take denim shorts into evening. Block heels or slim strappy sandals in nude, black or metallic look best with dark-wash or black shorts with a clean, undistressed hem. Tuck in a silky cami or a square-neck bodysuit, add a clutch, statement earrings and a bold lip, and it works for rooftop bars and birthday dinners. Block heels are kinder on decking and cobblestones than stilettos. Keep the shorts tailored and the top dressy; the heels then do the job of shifting denim from day to night.
22. Denim Shorts With Espadrilles Outfit

Espadrilles give denim shorts a summery, seaside feel. Canvas espadrilles, flat or wedge, with a jute sole and a tan or black toe cap pair with white or light-wash shorts and an off-shoulder or embroidered cotton top. Carry a raffia tote or round straw bag, add a wide straw hat and shell or wood bead jewelry, and it's ready for a seaside dinner or a bridal shower with a relaxed Mediterranean elegance. Keep jute soles dry. Rope soles soak up water and can lose their shape, so these aren't the shoes for wet sand or a rainy forecast.
23. Denim Shorts Travel Outfit Summer

For long airport days or a summer road trip, I'd pick stretchy high-waisted denim shorts with a soft oversized tee or a light long-sleeve top. Stretch matters more than anything else. Rigid denim digs in at the waist after a few hours of sitting, so look for a small amount of elastane. Slide sandals or white sneakers come on and off quickly at security, and a big tote holds what you need in transit, with a cap and minimal jewelry. A light sweater in the tote handles cold cabins and warm arrival halls.
24. Beach Cover-Up And Denim Shorts Outfit

Denim shorts make a practical cover-up with a bikini top or crochet halter, under an open button-down or sarong. Light-wash cutoffs look naturally beachy; layer a white linen shirt or printed sarong over your swimsuit top. Flip-flops or waterproof slides, a big straw tote, a sun hat and UV-blocking sunglasses take you from sand to a beachfront lunch. One honest drawback: denim takes a long time to dry, so pull the shorts on only over a dry swimsuit bottom, or you'll sit in damp denim all afternoon.
25. Denim Shorts Evening Outfit

Denim shorts can go to an evening event if everything around them is dressy. Black or dark-wash shorts with a tailored fit and a clean hem pair with a silky cowl-neck camisole or a sequined or metallic top. Strappy stilettos or pointed pumps, a small embellished clutch and chandelier earrings push it into after-dark territory; a cropped jacket or bolero adds structure when it cools down. I'd make the makeup a little smokier than by day. Read the invitation first, though. For anything labeled cocktail or formal, shorts are a risk most hosts won't expect.
Cutting Your Own Shorts From an Old Pair of Jeans
Some of the best-fitting cutoffs are made at home, because the waist and seat already fit you. Jeans with a worn-out knee or a hem that has frayed past saving are ideal candidates. Cotton denim with little or no stretch frays most evenly; stretch denim can curl at the cut edge.
- Put the jeans on and mark your chosen length with chalk, then add about an inch and a half. Fraying and the first wash take up more length than you expect.
- Lay the jeans flat and cut one leg, angling slightly so the cut is a touch longer at the inner thigh than the outer side. That angle stops the inseam from riding up.
- Fold the cut leg over the uncut one and use it as a template, so both sides match.
- Wash and dry once to start the fray, then trim long threads.
- To stop the fray at a set point, stitch a line around the leg about half an inch above the edge.
For a neat rolled hem instead, cut a little longer, fold twice and tack the roll at the side seams with a few hand stitches so it stays put through the wash.
Two Pairs of Shorts, a Whole Summer of Outfits
The same pair of denim shorts can cover your whole summer calendar if the top, shoes and accessories change. A white tee and sneakers handle errands, a linen blazer and mules carry a casual workday, and a silky cami with heels takes them out at night. Small, deliberate choices do the work: a front tuck, a contrasting wash, a belt that marks the waist. If you only own one pair, make it a medium wash with a clean hem, and add white or black next.
