Denim shorts are the summer piece people own and then wear the same way every time: cutoffs, a tee, sandals, repeat. They can do much more. When I style shorts for clients, I treat them like any other bottom, which means a blazer, a sheer blouse or a fine knit can sit on top just as easily as a tank. Below are 25 complete outfits, from short high-waisted cutoffs to knee-length jorts and white Bermudas, with notes on length, rise and which shoes each one needs for brunch, travel, the office patio or a summer evening.

Inseam, Rise and the Sit-Down Test
Shorts are sold by inseam, the measurement from the crotch seam to the hem, and it's the number I look at first. It tells you more about how a pair will look than the size label.
- Around 2 to 3 inches: classic cutoffs. Best with flat sandals and sneakers, and with longer tops like the sweatshirt and flannel outfits below.
- Around 4 to 5 inches: the most flexible length, and the one I'd buy first. It works with nearly every outfit in this list.
- Around 7 to 9 inches, Bermuda and jort length: needs a bit of height from mules or heels, and suits tucked fitted tops.
- Rise: high-waisted shorts sit at or near the navel, which lets you tuck tops in and lengthens the leg. Mid-rise is more casual.
Then do the sit-down test in the fitting room. Sit, cross your legs and stand up again. If the hem rides up into the crease or the pockets show below the hem, the pair is too short or too tight for everyday wear. Rigid, non-stretch denim looks crisper but gives less when you sit, so it needs a little more room.
1. High-Waisted Denim Shorts with White Button-Down

I come back to this pairing every summer. A crisp white button-down, sleeves rolled to the forearm and a couple of buttons open, loosely front-tucked into high-waisted medium-wash shorts. The loose tuck lets the shirt blouse a little over the waistband rather than pulling tight. Brown leather sandals and a simple belt finish it, plus a canvas tote and gold hoops. My one check: the shirt tail should stay inside when you sit, so I choose a shirt long enough to tuck at least four inches.
2. Distressed Denim Shorts with Graphic Tee

A pair of distressed denim shorts with a worn-in graphic tee are pure weekend clothing, and the trick is keeping the rips under control. I like the fraying at the hem and maybe one small tear; shorts with holes high on the thigh are harder to wear sitting down. Half-tuck a vintage band or faded college tee at the front so the waistband shows. White sneakers, retro sunglasses and a crossbody finish it for the park or a coffee walk.
3. Denim Shorts with Oversized Blazer

An oversized blazer over shorts surprises people, and it's one of my favorite ways to wear them in the city. The blazer needs structured shoulders in beige or charcoal, and the shorts should be short enough to peek out below its hem; if the blazer covers them entirely, it reads as no pants at all. A fitted tank or ribbed tee underneath, light-wash raw-hem shorts, then loafers or white sneakers and a structured bag. It suits a casual office day or a gallery lunch.
4. Light-Wash Denim Shorts with Linen Shirt

On really hot days, linen is the fabric I trust to stay comfortable against the skin. A relaxed linen shirt in white, oatmeal or sage over pale light-wash shorts keeps the whole outfit light in color and feel. Leave it untucked if the shorts are short, so the hems layer; tie it at the waist if they're longer. Slides or espadrilles keep it relaxed for a beachside lunch or a sightseeing day. Linen wrinkles fast, and I'd simply accept it rather than ironing it twice a day.
5. Black Denim Shorts with Bodysuit

Black denim shorts look sharper than blue after dark, and a fitted bodysuit gives them a clean line from shoulder to hem because it can't come untucked. I choose black for a long, continuous column, or white for contrast. Heeled sandals, a chain necklace and a leather crossbody make it a dinner or concert outfit. For daytime, I swap in flats and a denim jacket. Black denim fades to charcoal with washing, so wash it inside out in cold water.
6. Denim Shorts with Crop Top and Sneakers

A crop top with shorts is a summer uniform, so small adjustments make the difference. I pick a ribbed square-neck crop in a neutral and shorts with a rise high enough that only a sliver of skin shows; the proportion looks balanced instead of skimpy. White chunky sneakers keep it walkable for a flea market or a smoothie run, and a cap with hoops adds personality. If you're long-waisted, look for crops that end at the lowest rib rather than mid-stomach.
7. White Denim Shorts with Striped Button-Down

White denim shorts with a blue and white striped shirt look nautical without trying. I tuck the shirt in completely and use a tan leather belt, since a white short with an untucked stripe looks like a nightshirt from a distance. Espadrille wedges or flat sandals, a straw tote and big sunglasses suit a waterfront dinner or a boat day. Choose white denim in a heavier weight; thin white shorts show pocket linings and anything underneath.
8. Bermuda Denim Shorts with Knit Tank

Bermuda shorts end around the knee, which changes how I style them. The longer length cuts the leg at its widest point, so I add some height with heeled mules or pointed flats to keep the leg looking long. A fitted fine-knit tank in cream, black or chocolate tucked in defines the waist. Add a shoulder bag and layered gold chains for a casual office or an early dinner. If you're petite, I'd try a Bermuda that stops just above the knee rather than on it.
9. Denim Shorts with Off-Shoulder Top

An off-shoulder top in cotton or eyelet softens denim instantly and draws the eye to the collarbone. The elastic neckline is the part to check: it should stay put when you lift your arms, or you'll spend the evening pulling it back up. I tuck it fully into high-waisted shorts, then add delicate sandals and a woven crossbody. Soft waves and very little jewelry keep the look easy. It suits sunset dinners and rooftop evenings.
10. Denim Cutoffs with Oversized Sweatshirt

When the morning is cool and the afternoon isn't, I reach for cutoffs under an oversized sweatshirt. Push the sleeves up and let just the frayed hem of the shorts show below the sweatshirt. White crew socks and chunky dad sneakers bring the throwback sporty mood. A cap and a canvas tote finish it. My caution: if the sweatshirt hangs lower than the shorts, it can look like you forgot your bottoms, so pick a sweatshirt that ends at the hip.
11. Denim Shorts with Sheer Blouse

A sheer blouse turns denim shorts into an evening outfit. I choose a translucent button-up in a soft animal print or muted floral, layer it over a camisole or bandeau, and tuck it into high-waisted shorts. Chiffon and organza slip out of waistbands easily, so I tuck the blouse into the camisole's hem first. Heeled sandals or pointed flats lengthen the leg, and a mini bag with a bold lip completes it for a rooftop bar or a summer night out.
12. Denim Shorts with Tank Top and Flannel

An open plaid flannel over a white or black tank and denim shorts gives you a layer you can tie around your waist once the sun is up. I choose muted plaids so the shirt doesn't overwhelm short hems, and I leave it unbuttoned so it moves. Combat boots or flat ankle boots ground the outfit and suit a bonfire or an early fall market. Brushed flannel holds warmth well, which makes this the right look for those cool September evenings.
13. Denim Shorts with Denim Jacket

Double denim works when the washes clearly differ. I put light-wash shorts with a medium-wash jacket, so the eye reads two separate pieces instead of a mismatched set. A white tee or soft tank underneath and white sneakers or slides keep it simple. Then I break up the blue with a tote or crossbody in a contrasting color. It's a good travel or outdoor concert outfit, since the jacket comes on and off as the temperature changes.
14. White Denim Shorts with Black One-Shoulder Top

A black one-shoulder top with white denim shorts makes a sharp graphic outline. The diagonal neckline draws attention upward, and the white shorts keep the bottom crisp. I match black heeled sandals to the top so the colors bracket the outfit, and add one pair of statement earrings, worn on the bare-shoulder side. A black clutch suits evening cocktails or a dinner date. One-shoulder tops need a strapless or convertible bra, so plan for that first.
15. Denim Shorts with Striped Crop Top

A striped crop top adds graphic pattern without any accessories, and I like it in less obvious colors like green and white or navy and cream. High-waisted shorts keep the midriff showing to a minimum. Horizontal stripes widen, so I choose narrower stripes if you're broad through the shoulders. White sneakers, a crossbody and simple sunglasses keep it light for picnics and casual brunch.
16. Denim Shorts with Puff-Sleeve Blouse

Volume on the arms balances the short line of denim. I pick a puff-sleeve blouse with a square neck in cream or sage, tuck it fully and pair it with high-waisted shorts. The blouse brings a vintage, romantic outline and the denim stops it from getting too sweet. Heeled sandals or ballet flats and a basket or top-handle bag carry it from a daytime shower to an early garden party. Puff sleeves add width, so if you have broad shoulders, I'd choose a softer, smaller puff.
17. Distressed Denim Shorts with Band Tee and Boots

The grunge version: a worn band tee loosely tucked at the front, distressed shorts with frayed hems, and black leather ankle boots. The boots add weight to the bottom of the outfit, which balances the bare leg. Layered chains and dark sunglasses suit an outdoor music festival or a night market. Fit is what keeps it from looking sloppy: the shorts should sit at your natural waist, and the tee shouldn't be stretched out at the collar. Boots get hot on long festival days, so wear breathable socks.
18. Denim Shorts with Prenice Sweater

A fine-gauge crewneck over denim shorts is my answer to a summer evening that turns chilly. Pastel yellow, soft pink or heather gray keep it seasonal. Cotton or a cotton-cashmere blend breathes better than wool here. I tuck just the front slightly so the shorts still show, then add white sneakers or espadrilles. It suits beach bonfires, outdoor movie nights and patio dinners. Fine knits snag on rough denim hems, so watch the fringe on cutoffs.
19. High-Waisted Denim Shorts with Halter Top

A halter neckline draws the eye up and shows the shoulders, which lengthens the whole figure when paired with high-waisted shorts. I choose silky halters for evening and ribbed knit for daytime. The neckline looks best with hair up, either a high ponytail or a sleek bun. Strappy heels and a clutch dress it up; slides keep it casual. A halter tie can rub the back of the neck over a long evening, so I look for a wider strap.
20. Denim Shorts with Plaid Blazer

A plaid blazer gives denim shorts real structure, and because the pattern is so strong, everything else can stay plain. A white tee underneath, loafers or low block-heel pumps and a structured leather bag. I keep the shorts dark and clean here, since distressed denim with plaid looks muddled. This is the outfit I suggest for a creative workspace or a smart lunch in warm weather. Wool-blend plaid is warm, so it's better for late spring and early fall.
21. Denim Shorts with Graphic Sweatshirt

A graphic sweatshirt over denim shorts mixes cozy and casual. I choose one slightly oversized with a retro sports logo or simple print and push the sleeves up so the arms don't disappear. The shorts should just peek out. Crew socks and chunky sneakers anchor the sporty mood, and I skip jewelry so the graphic stays the focus. It's a reliable travel day outfit for planes with heavy air conditioning.
22. White Denim Shorts with Bikini Top and Kimono

White denim shorts with a bikini top and a light printed kimono suit a beach club or poolside lounging. I let the kimono hang open and pick one with a fluid rayon or chiffon drape so it moves in the breeze. The white shorts keep the busier print calm. Flat sandals, oversized sunglasses and a straw hat finish it, and it's fine for a casual beachside lunch. Wet swimwear can show through white denim, so I'd change into a dry top first.
23. Denim Shorts with Bodysuit and Statement Belt

A statement belt turns a plain base into a finished outfit. I tuck a black or white bodysuit into light-wash shorts, then add a bold leather belt with a striking buckle. The belt should fit the loops of your shorts; wide belts don't fit narrow loops and end up sitting above them. Loafers or heeled sandals, a shoulder bag and layered necklaces finish it for brunch or shopping. Keep other jewelry modest so the buckle stays the focal point.
24. Denim Shorts with Tweed Jacket

A tweed jacket over denim shorts mixes ladylike and casual, and I love the contrast. A cropped or boxy tweed in a neutral with a little metallic thread, over a white tee or silk camisole. The jacket should end at or above the hem of the shorts, so a cropped style works best. Ballet flats or slingbacks and a mini top-handle bag suit a bridal shower or garden party. Tweed is loosely woven, so it snags easily on bag hardware.
25. Knee-Length Denim Shorts with Tucked Tee and Belt

Knee-length denim shorts look best styled simply. I tuck a fitted white tee into a light-wash pair, add a slim leather belt, white sneakers and classic sunglasses. The longer inseam gives coverage for long walking days, and the fitted top balances the wider leg opening. A canvas tote or backpack suits exploring or errands. I'd check where the hem falls: just above the knee usually flatters more than right across it.
Cutting Your Own Cutoffs From Old Jeans
Many of these outfits start with a pair of cutoffs, and making your own from an old pair of jeans is easy if you take it slowly. This is how I do it.
- Put the jeans on and mark the length with chalk about an inch longer than you want. Cotton denim shrinks a bit in the wash, and the hem will fray up slightly.
- Take them off, fold in half lengthwise so the legs match, and cut both legs at once with sharp fabric scissors.
- Cut on a slight angle, a little shorter on the outer thigh than the inner, which follows the shape of the leg and stops the inner hem from looking long.
- Wash and dry them to start the fraying. For a softer edge, pull a few of the white crosswise threads out with a pin.
- Cut a little at a time. You can always go shorter, never longer.
When Shorts Ride Up or Rub
Shorts riding up between the thighs usually means the leg opening is too narrow or the rise is too short for your shape, and I'd look for a longer inseam or a wider, A-line leg rather than sizing up. Inner-thigh rubbing on a long walking day is common with any short; thin bike shorts or slip shorts underneath longer denim solve it, and an anti-chafe balm helps with shorter pairs. Pockets that poke out below the hem are a cut issue, not a fit one, so look for brands that use shorter pocket bags in shorter styles.
Your Denim Shorts Can Do More Than You Think
The same pair of denim shorts can carry a boardwalk afternoon and a dressed-up evening, depending on what you put with them. Across these looks, I keep returning to high waists, longer inseams and a real layer on top: a blazer, a sheer blouse or a fine knit. White denim, black denim, Bermudas and distressed cuts all have a place. My advice is to own two pairs, one short and one longer, in different washes, and treat them like trousers rather than a backup. With a considered top and the right shoe, shorts can look as finished as anything else in your closet.
