A pair costume only works when both of you feel like a lead character, not one star and one helper. The thirty duos below cover cartoon partners, nineties film friends, food jokes, sparkly themes and a few you can pull together in an afternoon. I've written each one out from shoes to hair so you can see where the effort actually goes. Most of them start from clothes you already own or can thrift, with a little felt and craft foam doing the character work. If a skirt, a heel or a tight fit isn't you, swap it; the colours and one signature detail carry the recognition far more than the exact garment does.

Splitting the Work So Neither of You Plays the Sidekick
Most duo costumes go lopsided the same way: one friend gets the wig, the crown and the props, and the other is left in jeans and a felt badge. I sort that out on day one by agreeing on three things together before anyone shops.
- One shared colour or texture. Pink and blue, plaid on both, or sequins on both. That shared element is what makes strangers read you as a pair.
- One signature detail each. Wednesday's collar, Daphne's scarf, Blair's headband. Give each person the single piece that identifies their character and put your money and time there first.
- The same level of effort. If one of you is wearing a wig and full makeup, the other shouldn't be in a hoodie with a printed label. Agree on wig or no wig, face paint or no face paint, before either of you buys anything.
Then check the plan against your night. If you're walking or standing outside for hours, cross off anything rigid, anything with a long train and any shoe you haven't worn for a full day. If it's a house party, you can afford more drama because you'll be sitting near a mirror and a bathroom.
Finally, do a full try-on together at least a few days early, side by side in front of a phone camera. You'll spot the pair that doesn't read, a colour that's too close, a missing prop, much faster in a photo than in the mirror.
1. Wednesday And Enid Best Friend Costume

Wednesday and Enid read instantly because they're opposites, so lean into the contrast rather than softening it. Wednesday is a black collared dress, opaque tights and chunky loafers or lace-up boots, with two tight braids, pale foundation and lightly smudged liner. Enid is the noise: a pastel striped sweater, a bright pleated skirt, patterned tights and platform sneakers, with loose waves and pink and blue colour on the ends. Add glittery eyes, barrettes and painted nails, and give both of you a school bag. When I style this pair I make Wednesday's collar the priority. A crisp white collar against black is what people spot first, so if your dress doesn't have one, a detachable lace or cotton collar pinned on does the job.
2. Glinda And Elphaba Best Friend Costume

Glinda and Elphaba are pure colour: one pink and frothy, one black and green. Glinda can wear a full pink dress, or a sparkly pink top over a tulle maxi skirt, with silver flats, a curled blonde wig, shimmer on the eyes, a jewelled crown and a star wand. Elphaba needs a long black dress, a structured jacket or cape, a pointed hat and black ankle boots. Her green face and hand makeup is where this goes wrong. Cream green paint transfers onto everything it touches, so I set it with plenty of translucent powder, press rather than wipe, and keep a dark collar so smudges don't show. A long dark braid and a light broom finish her; Glinda gets a tiny glittering bag.
3. Cher And Dionne Clueless Costume

Cher and Dionne give you nineties fashion with nothing bulky to carry around. Cher is a yellow plaid blazer and matching skirt, white knee socks, Mary Janes and a small white bag, with straight blonde hair, a plain headband and fresh pink makeup. Dionne matches in black-and-white plaid: fitted blazer, pleated skirt, knee-high socks, chunky black shoes, a tall statement hat, hoops and a mini bag, with braids or long waves and a brown lip. Fluffy pens are the cheap prop that sells it. The yellow plaid is the hard piece to find, and I'd look in thrift stores' skirt-suit racks before buying a costume version, because a real wool-blend suit hangs properly and the cheap ones go shiny under flash.
4. Daphne And Velma Best Friend Costume

This is the pair I recommend most for thrift shopping, because every piece exists in ordinary clothing. Daphne: a long-sleeved purple dress, a lime-green neck scarf, pink tights and purple flats or low block heels, plus a smooth red wig, a lavender headband and soft purple eyeshadow. Velma: an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red loafers, a short brown bob, freckles and big black glasses. Carry a magnifying glass or a notebook of cardboard clues. The scarf is Daphne's tell, so tie it at the side, not the front. In cold weather, thermal tights and a fitted base layer go under both without changing a thing people see.
5. Romy And Michele Best Friend Costume

Romy and Michele are about shine and confidence. One of you wears a shiny blue dress with silver platform sandals, the other a glossy pink dress with matching heels or ballet flats. Hunt for metallic fabric, sequins, feather trim or rhinestones, then add high ponytails with face-framing strands, frosted shadow, glossy lips, bright nails, small bags, costume rings and homemade reunion name tags. If minis aren't comfortable, midi lengths or pantsuits in the same pink and blue work. One warning from fitting these: cheap sequin dresses are scratchy on the inside seams and armholes. A thin slip or a stretch camisole underneath saves your skin by the second hour.
6. Lilo And Stitch Best Friend Costume

Lilo and Stitch are comfortable enough for school events, parties and a long walk door to door. Lilo is a red dress or an oversized red shirt with big white felt leaves, flat sandals or white sneakers, long dark hair, rosy cheeks and a flower behind one ear; a toy camera or a record sleeve makes a good prop. Stitch is a soft blue hoodie and joggers with blue sneakers, felt ears, a pale-blue belly panel and a painted blue nose. For the ears, I stiffen two layers of felt with a sheet of craft foam between them and stitch them to the hood seam, because glued-on ears flop forward within an hour. Matching flower bracelets tie the two of you together.
7. Woody And Buzz Lightyear Best Friend Costume

Woody and Buzz cost very little if you build Buzz from soft pieces instead of a helmet. Woody is a yellow checked shirt, jeans, brown boots, a red bandana, a cow-print vest and a foam cowboy hat, with a name written on the boot sole as a joke people will check. Buzz layers a white utility vest over a green and purple long-sleeved top, white trousers and sneakers, with a purple hood around the face and fabric wings. Make his chest control panel from thin cardboard or craft foam with bottle-cap buttons. I keep the wings small and soft. A wide rigid wing span hits every door frame and every person standing behind you.
8. Mario And Luigi Best Friend Costume

Mario and Luigi are the easiest DIY pair on this list: blue overalls, a red or green long-sleeved shirt, white gloves, brown work boots and a cap with a felt letter. Luigi's shoes can be a shade darker. For the moustaches, skin-safe makeup is kinder over a long night than adhesive ones, which lift at the corners once you start eating. Plush mushrooms or cardboard coins make easy props. The felt M and L are where I see this fail. Felt glued onto a polyester cap peels off within hours, so I stitch the letter around the edge with a few running stitches, or use iron-on adhesive web if the cap is cotton.
9. Princess Peach And Princess Daisy Costume

Peach and Daisy are a royal pair split cleanly by colour. Peach is a pink puff-sleeve dress, white gloves, blue earrings, a gold crown and pink flats, with a soft blonde wig and rosy, glowy makeup. Daisy is yellow and orange, with white gloves, green jewellery, a small crown and orange or gold shoes, and brown or auburn hair flipped outward. A parasol or a star-shaped bag is all the prop you need. Floor-length dresses look dramatic but get stepped on at crowded parties, so I usually suggest knee or tea length. A petticoat is optional. Fit the crown on a clear elastic loop under the hair at the back, or it will slide off when you look down.
10. SpongeBob And Patrick Best Friend Costume

Skip the box. A SpongeBob and Patrick made from clothes lets you sit down, dance and fit through a car door. SpongeBob is a yellow top over a white collared shirt, a red tie, brown shorts, tall white socks and black lace-up shoes, with a few brown felt spots, yellow face accents and rosy cheek circles. Patrick is a pink sweatshirt, lime-green shorts with purple felt flowers, pink leggings and pink sneakers, with light pink makeup and hair pushed upward. Bubble wands make a fun prop. Patrick's flowers matter more than you'd think; without them he can read as just a person in pink, so make them large.
11. Mike And Sulley Best Friend Costume

Mike and Sulley suit a cold night because both are basically fleece. Mike is a bright green sweatshirt and joggers with sneakers, one large felt eye on the chest and small foam horns on a green headband, finished with green eyeshadow and a high ponytail or slicked-back hair. Sulley is a turquoise faux-fur jacket, blue trousers, purple felt spots and sturdy blue boots, with small horns, a blue wig or temporary spray, and purple eye makeup. Hard hats and clipboards make the pair feel like coworkers. Faux fur sheds and moves, so I attach Sulley's spots with a few hand stitches rather than glue, which won't grip long pile at all.
12. Tiana And Charlotte Best Friend Costume

Tiana and Charlotte coordinate without matching, which suits friends with different tastes. Tiana is a pale-green dress with layered leaf-shaped fabric, green flats, light gloves and a small flower crown, with a high bun, warm glowing makeup and soft green shadow. A tiny frog purse is her joke prop. Charlotte goes all in: a voluminous pink dress, satin gloves, pink block heels, sparkly costume jewellery, bouncy blonde curls, a jewelled tiara, rosy blush and gloss, plus a folding fan. Midi lengths move better than floor-length gowns. I cut Tiana's leaf petals from felt or non-fraying fabric so the edges stay crisp without hemming every one.
13. Mabel And Dipper Pines Best Friend Costume

Mabel and Dipper are a last-minute favourite because the clothes are ordinary and the details carry it. Mabel wears a colourful sweater with a felt star or rainbow on the front, a purple skirt, knee socks and black flats, plus a long brown wig, a bright headband, pink blush and a crossbody bag. Dipper is a navy vest over an orange-red tee, grey shorts, white socks, sneakers and a blue-and-white cap with a simple pine tree symbol, short brown hair and light freckles. Matching journals or flashlights complete it. The sweater motif is the whole Mabel costume, so I cut it big and centre it high on the chest where it shows above a bag strap.
14. Kim Possible And Shego Best Friend Costume

Kim Possible and Shego are sleek and easy to move in. Kim is olive cargo trousers, a fitted black turtleneck, a utility belt, black gloves and boots, with a long auburn wig, neutral makeup and a toy communicator clipped to the belt. Shego is black trousers and a fitted top with vivid green panels, black boots, long black hair, green eye makeup and matching gloves. A green belt bag stands in for props. For her panels, sewn inserts or stretch fabric stitched on top hold up far better than fabric tape, which lifts the moment the top stretches across your back. Keep both outfits in stretch knits and you can climb stairs, sit and dance freely.
15. Blair And Serena Best Friend Costume

Blair and Serena show two takes on the same school uniform. Blair is a fitted blazer, white blouse, plaid skirt, opaque tights, loafers and her signature padded headband, with smooth brown curls, defined lashes and a berry lip. Serena is a relaxed blazer over a loosely buttoned white shirt, a pleated skirt, knee-high boots and layered necklaces, with long tousled blonde waves and bronzer. Give each a structured bag or a coffee cup. The headband is Blair's identifier, so get a properly padded one; a flat band won't read across a room. For a school-friendly version, go longer on the skirts and flat on the shoes.
16. Daria And Jane Best Friend Costume

Daria and Jane suit friends who like dry humour and hate fuss. Daria is a green utility jacket over an orange top, a black pleated skirt, round glasses, black combat boots and straight brown hair, with minimal makeup and a paperback. Jane is a red jacket over a black V-neck, dark shorts or a skirt, opaque tights, tall black boots, a short black bob, blue-grey shadow and a sketchbook. Keep the expressions flat in photos; that's half the joke. I like this one for cold nights, since the jackets and tights are already part of it. The green and red outerwear does all the identifying, so spend your time finding those two jackets and borrow the rest from your wardrobe.
17. Regina George And Cady Heron Costume

Regina George and Cady Heron are mostly about pink. Regina is a pink cardigan over a white tank, a plaid skirt, pink heels or flats, a small shoulder bag, smooth blonde hair, glossy lips and a homemade notebook styled like the burn book. Cady can be her early casual look, a red top, dark jeans, sneakers, long auburn hair and natural makeup, or match Regina in a different pink outfit with name necklaces for a closer tie. I'd keep it to the clothes and the friendship joke and skip the movie's crueller moments. Wear fitted shorts under any short skirt; you'll be grateful the first time you bend down or sit on a low sofa.
18. Mermaid And Sailor Best Friend Costume

A mermaid and a sailor pair glitter with plain nautical basics. The mermaid wears a turquoise sequin top with a green scale-print maxi skirt or flared trousers, metallic sandals, pearls, beachy waves with temporary blue streaks, aqua shimmer and face gems. The sailor wears high-waisted navy trousers, a blue-and-white striped top, white sneakers, a sailor cap, a red neck scarf and a rope-handled tote. A shell bag and a cardboard anchor sign are enough props. I'd skip a fitted tail completely. You can't do stairs or a full step in one, and a flowing scale-print skirt reads as mermaid just as clearly while you walk normally.
19. Sun And Moon Best Friend Costume

Sun and moon is a good pick when you don't want a particular character but still want a clear pair. The sun wears gold, a dress, a jumpsuit or a top and skirt, with metallic shoes, a sunburst headband, golden highlighter, warm yellow shadow and loose curls. The moon wears midnight blue or silver with star appliqués, silver boots, a crescent headpiece and cool shimmer, with soft waves or a sleek low bun and star clips. Small celestial bags finish both. The headpieces are what people see first. I build the sunburst on a wide headband with rays cut from craft foam, since card rays bend and droop once the evening gets humid.
20. Peanut Butter And Jelly Best Friend Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is the food joke everyone gets. The peanut butter friend wears tan trousers, a beige sweatshirt, brown sneakers, a tan cap and a round cardboard sandwich panel with a peanut drawn on, plus a foam spoon. The jelly friend wears purple trousers, a berry top, purple sneakers and a matching panel covered in felt grapes, with purple hair clips and berry makeup. Hang the panels on soft shoulder straps so your hands stay free. Cardboard soaks up rain and softens fast, so I seal the panels with a coat of clear acrylic or wrap them in packing tape if there's any chance of drizzle. The lazy version is a large printed label pinned to each shirt.
21. Bee And Beekeeper Best Friend Costume

A bee and a beekeeper suit friends of almost any age. The bee is a black-and-yellow striped top, black leggings, comfortable boots, sheer wings and an antenna headband, with yellow shadow, rosy cheeks and a high bun. The beekeeper is white or beige coveralls, work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh draped loosely around the edge, keeping the face visible. Carry a flower basket or a cardboard honeycomb instead of any real tools. I lift the beekeeper's mesh off the face with the hat brim and never pull it tight; dark mesh close to the eyes makes steps hard to see at night. Coveralls layer warmly over a jumper, too.
22. Strawberry And Blueberry Best Friend Costume

Strawberry and blueberry photograph well because the two colours are so strong side by side. The strawberry wears a red dress, romper or top and trousers dotted with small white felt seeds, green shoes, a leafy green collar, a stem headband and curled or braided hair. The blueberry wears royal blue with darker blue round appliqués, blue sneakers and a green felt crown around the neckline, plus blue shadow and a berry tint. Little baskets or fruit-shaped bags make easy props. Glue for dozens of felt seeds takes ages, so I use a fabric marker or white fabric paint dots instead, which flex with the dress and never fall off.
23. Cowgirl Best Friend Costume

Matching cowgirls are easy to make personal with different colours and denim. One wears a red checked shirt and dark jeans, the other a white blouse with a denim skirt or flared jeans, and both add fringed vests, western belts, bandanas, cowboy hats and comfortable boots. Loose waves, low braids or ponytails sit nicely under the hats, with bronzed skin, freckles and neutral lips. Rope-handled bags or a sheriff-star purse make harmless props. Very long fringe catches on chair backs and car doors, so I trim it to a hand's length. Almost everything here gets worn again afterward, which makes it one of the cheaper costumes overall.
24. Disco Best Friend Costume

Disco gives both of you room to shine within one theme. One friend wears a silver sequin jumpsuit with white platform boots, the other gold flared trousers, a metallic halter over a fitted undershirt and gold platforms. Add big sunglasses, hoops and little mirror-ball bags, fluffy curls or feathered waves, shimmering shadow, lashes and gloss. Matching star clips link the two. If you'll be dancing, pick a stable block platform or metallic sneakers. Sequins and metallic knits hold heat, so I look for versions with a soft knit lining. On a crowded dance floor an unlined sequin jumpsuit gets hot and itchy within an hour.
25. Pink And Blue Alien Best Friend Costume

Pink and blue aliens are a playful space pair with no canon to get wrong. The pink alien wears a metallic pink dress or jumpsuit with silver boots, and the blue alien a matching blue outfit with white sneakers or metallic ankle boots. Both add antenna headbands, iridescent belts, futuristic sunglasses and tiny planet-shaped bags. Rather than full face paint, I put pink or blue shadow out toward the temples with a few face gems, which reads alien and is much easier to wear for hours. Space buns, high ponytails or braids with clip-in colour suit both. Keep the outfits soft and skip inflatables, which take up the whole doorway.
26. Butterfly And Flower Best Friend Costume

A butterfly and a flower make a sweet garden pair without going full theatre. The butterfly wears a bright fitted top with black trousers or a tulle skirt, patterned wings, black ankle boots and an antenna headband, with wing-shaped eye makeup and a smooth bun. The flower wears a green dress, jumpsuit or top and trousers with petal shapes around the neckline or head, green flats, rosy makeup, vine accessories and soft curls. Tiny watering-can bags or floral baskets connect you. Match the petal colour to the wing colour and the pair suddenly looks planned. I always choose wings with elastic arm loops that fold flat, so you can sit back in a chair.
27. Black Cat And White Cat Best Friend Costume

Black cat and white cat is the pair I suggest when you have a day's notice and a full wardrobe. The black cat wears a black jumpsuit or a long-sleeved top and trousers with ankle boots, a tail and pointed ears; the white cat mirrors that in white or cream with pale sneakers. Draw fine whiskers and a small nose with skin-safe liner, then give the black cat smoky silver shadow and the white cat pearly shimmer. High ponytails or buns sit well under the ear headbands, and bell chokers plus paw bags finish it. Soft fabric tails are safer than wired ones. I sew the tail to a belt loop rather than pinning it, so it doesn't swing loose.
28. Pirate And Mermaid Best Friend Costume

Pirate and mermaid mixes rough nautical layers with shine. The pirate wears black trousers, a white ruffled blouse, a striped vest, flat knee-high boots and a colourful waist sash, plus a soft tricorn hat, braided hair, smudged liner and a rolled cardboard treasure map. The mermaid wears a scale-print skirt or flared trousers, a purple or turquoise top, metallic sandals, pearls, a shell headband, waves and aqua shimmer. A small treasure-chest purse links you. I'd leave out swords and gory makeup so it stays family friendly. A sash tied twice at the hip, with long ends, does more for the pirate silhouette than any bought accessory.
29. Fairy Godmother Duo Costume

Two fairy godmothers can coordinate without wearing the same thing. One might wear a lavender midi dress with a silver tulle cape, the other a pale-blue jumpsuit with a sheer overskirt. Add glitter flats, star wands, sparkly belts and delicate crown headbands, with soft curls, braided updos or silver-tinted buns, luminous skin, pastel shadow and a few face gems. Small drawstring bags are more useful than another wand. Loose glitter migrates onto every surface you touch, sofa, car and hugs included, so I use glitter fabric or sealed glitter flats rather than sprinkling it on. Leave rigid wings at home for busy rooms.
30. Retro Aerobics Best Friend Costume

Retro aerobics is the comfiest costume here and ideal if your night involves a lot of moving. Both of you wear bright leggings under contrasting shorts or a leotard over a fitted top, then add cropped sweatshirts, leg warmers, sweatbands, scrunched socks and supportive white sneakers. Split the colours, hot pink and purple for one, turquoise and yellow for the other. High side ponytails with fabric scrunchies, bright blush, blue liner and gloss sell the decade. A water bottle or a rolled mat is plenty of prop. Leg warmers slide down to the ankle on smooth leggings, so I put a strip of clear elastic or a single safety pin inside the top edge.
What Holds Felt, Foam and Ears in Place Until Midnight
Nearly every costume above relies on a few add-ons: felt letters and spots, foam horns, ears, panels and wings. How you attach them decides whether they're still on at the end of the night.
- Hot glue is quick but brittle. It lets go when fabric flexes and gets worse in cold air, so I use it only on rigid things like foam onto a headband.
- Fabric glue holds felt to cotton well, but it needs a full night to cure. Glue the evening before, never an hour before you leave.
- A few hand stitches beat any glue on stretchy knits, faux fur and polyester caps, which most glues simply slide off.
- Safety pins from the inside are fine for panels and sashes, and they leave the garment undamaged if you want to wear it again.
Wigs and Temporary Colour Without Regret
Lots of these pairs ask for a hair colour you don't have. Cheap synthetic wigs shine and tangle, so I brush them out with a wide-tooth comb, then dust a little dry shampoo or powder through the top to cut the plastic gloss. Keep them away from candles and heaters; synthetic fibre frizzes and can melt with heat.
Coloured hair spray is the alternative, but it rubs onto collars, pillows and pale tops. If one of you is wearing white near the neckline, choose the wig. Spray colour also shows up brightest on lighter hair, so dark hair often needs a wig to get Enid's pink ends or Sulley's blue.
Which Pair Fits Your Friendship?
A good pair costume gives each of you a full, comfortable look that people recognise on its own and even more so together. There are character duos here, nineties fashion, food jokes, magic, animals and easy DIY pairs. Think about where you'll be, the weather, how far you'll walk and how much crafting time you really have. Test makeup a week early, stitch anything that has to stay put, and wear shoes you've already broken in. Then adjust the shape and coverage until you both like what you see in the mirror. Friends who are comfortable in their costumes are the ones still laughing at midnight.
