Little boys tend to know exactly who they want to be, and the fun of a mom-and-son pair is building your half around his choice. Below are thirty duos, from storybook and superhero pairs to animals, food, weather and a couple of classic Halloween ones. I've written each as a head-to-toe plan for both of you: clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes. Most start from a plain sweatsuit or hoodie for him, which is what I build the majority of boys' costumes on, because it's warm, it moves and he'll actually keep it on. Felt, thrifted pieces and a few stitches do the rest.

One Plain Hoodie, Twenty Different Animals
Look down this list and you'll see the same base again and again: a hoodie and joggers in one colour. That's deliberate. A boy will run in a sweatsuit, it fits over a thermal, and every animal detail can be sewn onto it.
How I add the pieces
- Buy the set a size up so a warm layer fits under it and the hood sits over a beanie on a cold night.
- Sew ears into the hood seam or tack them on by hand. Ears glued to the top of a hood fall off the first time he pulls it down.
- Stiffen felt ears and fins with fusible interfacing between two layers so they stand up.
- Attach tails at the back waistband with a few strong stitches, and keep them short enough that they clear the ground.
- Use felt for spots, scales and bellies. It doesn't fray, so you can cut it and sew it straight on.
When Halloween is over, I unpick the hand stitches and the sweatsuit goes back to being clothes. That's worth thinking about before you glue anything down.
1. Princess Peach And Mario Costume

Peach and Mario is the pair I see little boys ask for by name. Mom wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, white gloves, a gold crown, blue earrings, pink flats and a softly waved blonde wig, with rosy blush and pink lipstick. Her son wears blue overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, comfortable brown shoes and a red cap with a felt circle and letter. The mustache is the one detail he can't do without. I draw it in child-safe face paint and keep it small, because a big painted mustache smears onto his top lip the moment he eats a sweet. Everything here is soft layers, so he can run between houses without anything flapping.
2. Elastigirl And Jack-Jack Costume

Elastigirl and Jack-Jack needs only two colours, which makes it easy to put together. Mom starts with a red long-sleeve top and red leggings, then black shorts, black gloves and a felt emblem, with knee-high black boots or supportive sneakers, an auburn bob or short wig, a soft black eye mask and natural makeup. Her son wears a red footed jumpsuit, or red sweats with black gloves and the same emblem, a soft black mask and black sneakers. For a crawling baby I'd lose the gloves and mask entirely; he'll pull both off and chew them. No capes and no loose cords on this one, which is true to the characters anyway.
3. Princess Leia And Ewok Costume

This is the pair I'd steer a family toward if Halloween night is usually cold. Mom wears a long white dress, or a white mock-neck top with a flowing white skirt, plus a silver belt, white ankle boots and Leia's side buns in her own hair or a brunette wig, with defined brows, light blush and a neutral lip. Her son wears a brown fleece jumpsuit, fuzzy boot covers and a hood with rounded ears, with a tan cowl or scarf layered over the hood for the Ewok shape. Give him a small fabric satchel or a lantern-shaped candy bucket in place of any weapons. Side buns hold best when you braid the hair first and coil the braid, then pin; a twisted ponytail coil sags by the end of the night.
4. Dorothy And Cowardly Lion Costume

A fuzzy lion next to blue gingham is very sweet for a small boy. Mom is Dorothy in a white puff-sleeve blouse, a gingham pinafore, white ankle socks and sparkly red flats, with two braids tied in blue ribbon, rosy cheeks, soft mascara and pink balm, and a small woven basket lined with blue fabric for candy. Her son is the Cowardly Lion in a tan hoodie and sweatpants with a faux-fur mane sewn around the hood, a clip-on tail, a brown painted nose, whiskers and tan sneakers. Choose a light fur. A thick shag mane around a hood traps heat, and a hot, sweaty preschooler is an unhappy one. I stitch the mane along the hood seam so it frames his face rather than sitting on his forehead.
5. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Costume

Red Riding Hood and the wolf adapts to nearly any weather, since a cape and a hoodie are both easy to layer under. Mom wears a red hooded cape over a white blouse and a knee-length black or red skirt, opaque tights, lace-up boots and a wicker-look basket, with loose curls, rosy cheeks and a berry lip. Her son wears gray sweats and a gray hoodie with felt ears and a detachable tail, gray gloves and fuzzy shoe covers, with soft face paint around his nose. Keep the wolf friendly: pale gray and white makeup, no sharp teeth. Felt ears flop over on a hood unless you stiffen them. I fuse a layer of interfacing between two felt pieces before sewing them on, and they stand all night.
6. Pirate And Parrot Costume

The parrot is the fun half here, and it's simpler than it looks. Mom wears a striped blouse, black vest, cropped pants, a red sash and flat black boots, with a soft tricorn hat, clip-on hoops, a small faux-leather pouch, loose waves, smoky brown liner and a red lip. A rolled treasure map or chest-shaped candy bag tells people she's a pirate without a sword. Her son wears red sweats and a red hoodie covered in layered felt feathers in blue, yellow and green, plus a soft beak cap, wings along the sleeves and red sneakers. I cut the feathers in rows and sew each row along its top edge only, so they overlap and move. Stop the wings at the wrist so his hands stay free.
7. Ringmaster And Lion Costume

My take on the ringmaster and lion: mom's half is a costume she could wear to a party without the child, which isn't true of many on this list. She wears a red tailcoat over a white blouse, fitted black pants, a gold-trimmed vest and black ankle boots, with a miniature top hat, sleek ponytail, bold liner and red lipstick, and carries a ticket roll or striped candy bucket. Her son wears a golden-brown fleece suit with a soft mane, rounded ears and a fabric tail, a brown painted nose, a few whisker dots and tan sneakers. Mini top hats on combs slide backward on fine hair; an elastic under the ponytail holds it better. A strip of the same gold ribbon on both outfits links them cheaply.
8. Zookeeper And Monkey Costume

If he loves animals, this one gives him a costume he can climb in. Mom wears a khaki button-up, cargo pants, a canvas belt, hiking-style boots and a wide-brim safari hat, with a low braid or ponytail and natural makeup, and carries cardboard-tube binoculars and a laminated animal checklist. Her son wears a brown sweatsuit or fleece jumpsuit with a tan belly patch, rounded ears on the hood, a curved fabric tail, brown gloves and matching sneakers, with a small brown nose and a smile in washable paint. A tail that hangs to the floor gets stepped on by every kid behind him. I make his tail with a length of pipe cleaner sewn inside so it curls up and stays off the ground. The banana candy bag is the joke that makes people laugh.
9. Beekeeper And Bumblebee Costume

Black, yellow and cream show up well in photos, and the bee is an easy first sewing project. Mom wears cream coveralls, or a white shirt with utility pants and lace-up boots, plus gardening gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh around the edge, with a low bun and very little makeup. Her son wears a black long-sleeve shirt and leggings under a yellow-and-black striped tunic, sheer wings, an antenna headband, black sneakers and yellow socks, with round rosy cheeks in place of detailed paint. Keep the mesh well back from mom's face so she can see at dusk. The striped tunic is two rectangles with a neck hole, and I add a soft elastic at the hem so it puffs into a bee shape. Honey-pot bucket for her, flower bag for him.
10. Chef And Sushi Roll Costume

The chef and sushi roll is a food pair with almost no real construction. Mom wears a white chef coat, black pants, slip-resistant black shoes and a tall fabric chef hat, with her hair tied back, clean makeup and a soft red lip, and hangs a wooden spoon and a checked towel from her apron. Her son starts in a white sweatshirt and pants. A wide black felt band wraps his middle, with light felt avocado, cucumber and salmon-coloured toppings across his back, a green felt wasabi headband and white sneakers. I put the toppings on his back, not his front, so he can still hug, sit and hold his bucket. Stitch every piece flat; anything puffy on his back gets crushed in a car seat.
11. Milk And Cookie Costume

Looking for a pair that gets a laugh at the door? Mom is the milk carton and her son is the chocolate chip cookie. Mom's base is white pants, a white long-sleeve shirt and white sneakers, with a light rectangular tunic of white foam board or felt with blue carton details, a blue headband and cool-toned eyes. Her son wears tan sweats under a round padded cookie panel front and back, hung from wide shoulder straps, with dark brown felt chips, brown sneakers and a tan cap. Sew the chips on if you can. Glue works on felt-to-felt but peels from a padded or quilted panel. Keep his panels small enough for doorways, sitting and reaching into his bucket.
12. Astronaut And Alien Costume

Silver and green feel space-age without any hard helmet. Mom wears a white utility jumpsuit with silver tape accents, white sneakers and a light backpack made from painted plastic bottles or cardboard tubes, with a tidy bun, silver eyeliner and a little cool highlighter. Her son wears a lime green hoodie and joggers, silver sneakers, soft antennae on the hood and a removable oval belly patch in metallic fabric. Green face paint is optional. Most small boys are happier with a few silver freckles and bright cheeks, and green paint on a hoodie collar doesn't come out easily. Planet bucket for him, cardboard mission badge for her, and reflective trim on both.
13. Sun And Moon Costume

Sun and moon is two colours and some shimmer, built on basic clothes. Mom is the moon in a navy maxi dress or navy top with flowing pants, silver star appliqués, metallic flats, a crescent headpiece and a shimmery silver cape, with soft waves, blue-gray eyeshadow and pearly highlighter. Her son is the sun in a yellow sweatshirt and joggers, soft gold rays around a comfortable headband or his hood, orange cuffs, yellow sneakers, rosy cheeks and a little gold face glitter. Rays sewn around the hood stay put better than a headband on a boy who won't keep anything on his head. Star-shaped candy bags for both, and reflective fabric stars on her cape and his sleeves.
14. Rain Cloud And Rainbow Costume

A rain cloud and rainbow is a good joke on unpredictable October weather, and mom's half is practical in the real thing. She wears a pale gray sweater dress, or a gray sweatshirt with leggings, waterproof ankle boots and a gray hat or headband topped with batting clouds and short blue felt raindrops, plus a low ponytail, silvery eyes and pink cheeks. Her son wears a blue sweatsuit under a curved rainbow panel of layered felt strips in red, orange, yellow, green and purple, with white felt clouds at each end, blue sneakers and a bright knit cap. Keep the panel flexible and no wider than his shoulders. Batting clouds go flat and gray in actual rain, so a light spray of fabric protector before the night helps. An umbrella-print candy bag finishes the theme.
15. Mommy Shark And Baby Shark Costume

The shark pair is soft, warm and familiar to every toddler. Mom wears a pink hoodie dress or pink sweatshirt with leggings, a white felt belly, a soft dorsal fin down her back and a shark hood with fabric eyes and rounded felt teeth, plus pink sneakers and light rosy makeup. Her son wears a yellow hooded jumpsuit, or a yellow sweatshirt and joggers, with the same belly, fin and eyes, yellow sneakers and little or no makeup. All teeth in felt, never plastic. I stuff the dorsal fin lightly with fibrefill and topstitch it so it stands without poking into his back when he leans against the stroller. Pink ocean bucket for mom, yellow fish bag for him.
16. Mermaid And Crab Costume

A crab is a great costume for a younger boy because the claws give him something to wave. Mom wears a lavender fitted top and a long teal skirt with a walkable cut, flat metallic sandals, a shell headband, pearl-look clips, loose beachy waves, turquoise eyeshadow, pink lipstick and biodegradable shimmer. Her son wears a red hoodie and sweatpants, red sneakers, padded crab eyes on the hood, soft felt claws over his hands and extra fabric legs down his sides. The claws need to flip back. I sew them as mittens with an open palm slit so he can push his hand out to hold the bucket. Skip a fitted tail for mom; a scale-print skirt with a wide hem reads as a mermaid and lets her walk.
17. Cowgirl And Space Ranger Costume

Cowgirl and space ranger mixes two favourite adventure looks. Mom wears a yellow plaid shirt, a denim skirt or jeans, a red neck scarf, brown cowgirl boots and a red wide-brim hat, with a braided ponytail or shoulder-length red wig, freckles and peach lipstick. Her son wears a white jumpsuit or sweat set with green and purple felt panels, soft wrist cuffs, a purple fabric hood, white sneakers and cardboard control buttons across his chest. Fabric wings can lie flat on his back as long as they don't stick out past his shoulders. Cardboard buttons on a soft sweatshirt crease and pop off, so I make them from craft foam, which bends with him. Rope-style basket for her, planet bucket for him.
18. Fashion Villain And Dalmatian Costume

The fashion villain and Dalmatian is dramatic black and white with nothing scary about it. Mom wears a fitted black dress, or a black blouse with tailored pants, a spotted faux-fur coat, red gloves and red ankle boots, with a half-black, half-white wig, arched eyeliner and bold red lipstick. Her son wears a white hoodie and sweatpants with irregular black felt spots, floppy ears on the hood, a soft tail and black sneakers, with a painted black nose and a spot around one eye in child-safe paint. Vary the spot sizes; evenly sized round spots look like polka dots, not a dog. A red collar and a red candy bucket tie him to mom's red gloves and boots.
19. Wonder Woman And Superman Costume

A Wonder Woman and Superman team is primary colours, so it reads quickly at any door. Mom wears a red long-sleeve top with a blue knee-length skirt or leggings, gold felt trim, a gold headband, red boots and silver wrist cuffs, with polished waves, classic red lipstick and defined liner. Her son wears a blue shirt and pants under red briefs or shorts, a yellow belt, a felt chest emblem, red socks, red sneakers and a short breakaway cape at the shoulders. No mask for him. The emblem is what makes the costume, and felt glued onto a polyester shirt peels off by the second house, so I sew it on or use iron-on backing on cotton. Comic-style candy bags with stars finish it.
20. Cat Burglar And Little Batman Costume

Black on black can disappear at night, so this pair needs one bright detail. Mom wears a black long-sleeve jumpsuit, or a black top with leggings, flat ankle boots, a utility belt and a cat-ear headband, with a high ponytail, a simple black eye mask, winged liner and a tiny painted nose. Her son wears a gray shirt and pants with black briefs, a yellow felt belt, black boots, a short scalloped cape and a soft hood with pointed ears, plus a light eye mask cut wide enough that it doesn't block his view. Skip the gadgets and give each of you a themed bucket. Reflective yellow tape on his belt is the bright detail, and it suits the character. I check his mask from the side: if he has to turn his whole head to see a step, the eye holes need to be bigger.
21. Ghost Hunter And Marshmallow Mascot Costume

Mixing action and comedy, mom is the ghost hunter and her son is a puffy marshmallow mascot. Mom wears tan coveralls, black boots, elbow pads and colourful felt patches, a practical ponytail and neutral makeup, with an equipment pack from painted cardboard boxes, flexible tubes and empty bottles. Keep the pack light and leave out loose cords. Her son wears a white padded sweatshirt and white pants, white sneakers, a blue sailor collar, a red necktie and a soft white cap with a blue band, with rosy cheeks and a big grin. For the puffy look I layer a fleece vest under the sweatshirt instead of stuffing it, which keeps him warm and lets him bend. A white candy bag works as another marshmallow.
22. Schoolteacher And Magic Lizard Costume

Here's one for a son who loves science and animals. Mom wears a bright printed dress covered in planets, leaves or shapes, layered under a blue blazer, with colourful tights, ankle boots, playful earrings, a voluminous red updo or curly wig, bright lipstick and blue liner, and carries light science cards or a cardboard planet. Her son wears a green hoodie and sweatpants with felt scales, a curled fabric tail, soft lizard eyes on the hood, green sneakers and a few painted freckles. Scales take ages to cut one by one. I fold a strip of felt, cut a scalloped edge through both layers and sew the strips in overlapping rows, which gives the same look in a fraction of the time. A school-bus-yellow bucket adds the classroom touch.
23. Mystery Solver And Brown Dog Costume

The mystery solver and brown dog is cosy layers and a lot of nostalgia for parents. Mom wears an orange turtleneck, a red pleated skirt, orange knee socks and red flats or sneakers, with square black glasses, a smooth brunette bob, light freckles, peach blush and a natural lip. Her son wears a brown fleece jumpsuit or brown hoodie and sweatpants with floppy ears, a long fabric tail, a light blue collar with a gold diamond-shaped tag, brown sneakers and a painted black nose. The tag is the giveaway, so I cut it from craft foam and edge it with gold paint pen rather than leaving it off. A cardboard magnifying glass for her, a snack-shaped bag for him, and nothing hard to carry.
24. Alice And White Rabbit Costume

Pastel blue and white are soft and photograph well indoors at a party. Mom wears a blue knee-length dress, a white apron, white tights, black Mary Jane flats and a black headband over curled blonde hair or a blonde wig, with pink cheeks, light blue shadow and a rose lip. Her son wears a white sweatshirt and joggers under a red vest, a blue bow tie, white sneakers, a fluffy tail and a headband with tall fabric ears, plus a pink nose and whisker dots in washable makeup. Tall rabbit ears flop unless there's wire or a stiff interfacing in them; I use a bendable pipe cleaner along the inside edge so they can be straightened all night. Hang the cardboard pocket watch on a short ribbon so it can't drag or tangle.
25. Nanny And Chimney Sweep Costume

The nanny and chimney sweep has a musical, old-fashioned feel. Mom wears a white blouse, a fitted navy jacket and a long navy skirt, black ankle boots, white gloves and a small hat trimmed with fabric flowers and ribbon, with a neat updo, rosy blush and red lipstick. She carries a closed black umbrella, kept strapped shut in crowds. Her son wears dark gray pants, a gray vest, a white shirt, a soft newsboy cap, a red neck scarf and black sneakers, with lightly smudged gray on his cheeks and a craft-foam chimney brush. For the soot I use a little gray eyeshadow patted on with a sponge; it looks more like real smudges than face paint and wipes off with a cloth.
26. Fairy And Peter Pan Costume

A woodland fairy and Peter Pan turns the two of you into a storybook pair with very little sewing. Mom wears a knee-length green dress with a leaf-cut hem, sheer wings, gold flats and a small green hair piece, a high bun or short blonde wig, shimmery green eyeshadow, pink cheeks and a touch of face glitter. Her son wears a green tunic over matching leggings, a brown belt, soft brown ankle boots and a pointed green cap with a red felt feather, plus a leaf-shaped candy pouch. Leave out the toy dagger. I cut the tunic hem in zigzag points with pinking shears; felt doesn't fray, so there's nothing to finish. A thermal under the short sleeves covers a cold night.
27. Gardener And Flower Costume

Gardener and flower is colourful, easy, and a good afternoon project to make together. Mom wears denim overalls over a green plaid shirt, gardening gloves, a straw hat, brown rain boots and two braids, with rosy cheeks, and carries an empty watering can as her candy container. Her son wears a green sweatshirt and sweatpants and green sneakers, with a flower headpiece of big felt petals around a soft hood or wide headband, felt leaves at his wrists and a lighter green belly panel. Let him choose the petal colour. Felt petals on a hood bend flat against the car seat and spring back, which stiff foam petals won't do.
28. Scarecrow And Pumpkin Costume

Harvest colours make this pair a natural fit for a fall festival or a walk around the neighbourhood. Mom wears denim overalls over a plaid shirt, raffia-like fabric at the cuffs, brown boots and a floppy straw hat, with loose braids, orange blush, painted freckles and stitch lines at the corners of her smile. Her son wears an orange hoodie and sweatpants with a padded green collar, felt leaves, a pumpkin stem on the hood, orange sneakers and round rosy cheeks. I'd skip any rigid pumpkin shell; he won't be able to sit in it. The stitch lines on mom's face last longer in eyeliner pencil than in face paint, which cracks when you smile. Burlap-look bag for her, a green garden-pail bucket for him.
29. Spiderweb Queen And Little Spider Costume

The spider pair is properly Halloween but nothing a small child would find scary. Mom wears a long black dress, or a black blouse with a flowing skirt, silver fabric-paint webs, a silver web cape, black boots and a glittering headband, with a sleek ponytail, silver eyeshadow, winged liner and plum lipstick. Her son wears a black hoodie and joggers with four padded fabric legs sewn along his sides, soft round eyes on the hood, gray sneakers and small silver web details. Keep the extra legs short and floppy so they don't hook on railings. I tack the lower end of each leg loosely to his sleeve so they swing when he moves his arms, which makes him laugh every time. Matching silver buckets finish the pair.
30. Matching Skeleton Costume

Matching skeletons are the most classic option here, and one of the warmest. Mom wears a black long-sleeve jumpsuit, a leggings set or a sweater dress printed with white bones, black sneakers or combat-style boots and a high ponytail, with soft white and gray face paint around her eyes, nose and cheeks. Her son wears a black sweatshirt and joggers with white felt bones sewn on securely, black sneakers, a black beanie and a simple painted nose. Glow-in-the-dark fabric paint or reflective bone tape makes both of you easier to see. Set mom's white face paint with translucent powder; white cream paint is the first to crack and the worst on a black collar. Bright pumpkin buckets give the black-and-white a pop.
Face Paint on a Boy Who Won't Sit Still
Plenty of these costumes call for a painted nose, whiskers or a mustache, and plenty of little boys give you about ninety seconds. I plan for that.
- Patch-test the paint on his inner arm a day or two before. Redness or itching means a different product.
- Keep the design small. A nose and three whisker dots take a minute and still read as a cat, dog or lion.
- Paint him last, after shoes and coat are on, so he isn't rubbing his face while you hunt for a missing glove.
- Press a little translucent powder over cream paint with a puff. It cuts down on smudging onto collars and hoods.
- Take it off that night with a gentle cleanser or a bit of oil on a cotton pad, then wash his face. Never leave it on for bed.
If he refuses paint altogether, that's fine. A felt nose on a headband, or a mustache stuck on with medical tape, gives the same effect and comes off without a fight.
Start With the Character He Already Talks About
The pair that works is the one built around a character he already loves, with your half as the easy part. Begin with soft layers, supportive shoes and fabrics suited to your weather, then add the felt, makeup and candy bags that tie you together. Animal, food, nature and job pairs are the easiest to make at home, and the characters are the easiest to recognise. A few days before Halloween, have him walk, sit and climb stairs in the whole costume. Check that masks, capes, tails and headpieces stay on without blocking his view or slowing him down.
