In summer, the top is the piece people see first and the one that has to deal with the most sweat, sun and sticky car seats. When I edit a client's warm-weather wardrobe, I start there: a few good tanks, a linen shirt, one blouse with some detail, and the bottoms fall into place around them. The twenty outfits below are built top-first, from a plain white tank with linen trousers to crochet, eyelet and boatneck tanks. For each I've noted what to look for in the fabric and how it should sit at the waist, because that's where most summer outfits go wrong.

Tuck, Half-Tuck or Leave It Out
Most summer tops look different depending on where the hem ends up, and the rule I use is simple: the top should end where your waistband is, or clearly below the hip. Anything in between cuts the body at its widest point.
- Full tuck: for thin tanks, camisoles and fine knits going into high-waisted trousers or skirts. Thick tees bunch, so skip it there.
- Front tuck: for linen shirts and tees with shorts or jeans. It shows the waist at the front and lets the back hang over the seat.
- Leave it out: for boxy cropped tops that already end at the waistband, peplums, and anything with a hem detail you want seen.
- Knot it: only with tees and loose shirts, and tie at the side rather than center front so it doesn't sit on the stomach.
Bras Under Summer Necklines
A lot of the tops on this list have necklines that change what goes under them. Halters, one-shoulder tops and off-shoulder styles all need a strapless or convertible bra; boatnecks hide standard straps well; racer tanks need a racerback. Under sheer and white fabric, a bra close to your skin tone shows far less than a white one.
I always tell clients to buy the bra and the top together, or at least try the top with the bra they plan to wear. A good strapless bra should feel firm at the band when you first put it on, because it's doing all the work.
1. White Tank Top And Linen Pants Outfit

A white tank and wide-leg linen pants is the outfit I'd build a summer wardrobe around. The tank is where people cut corners, and it shows: a thin jersey tank looks like underwear by lunchtime, while a ribbed or heavier cotton one holds its shape and stays opaque. Beige or taupe linen keeps the pale palette from looking washed out in strong light. Flat leather sandals, a woven tote, and a thin belt if you want a clearer waist. Easy for errands and long lunches.
2. Black Tank Top And Denim Shorts Outfit

Black tank, denim shorts. It's less sweet than pastels and hides sweat better than any other color. I'd choose a slightly longer inseam over a very short cut; it sits better when you sit down and doesn't ride up on a long walk. Sneakers or flat sandals depending on how far you'll go, and a canvas tote. When the sun gets strong, an open white or blue linen shirt over the tank adds shoulder coverage and makes the outfit look more finished without trapping heat.
3. Linen Button Down Shirt And Shorts Outfit

There's a reason the loose linen button-down shows up in every summer wardrobe I build: it's cooler than a tee because air moves under it. Tuck just the front into longer shorts so the hem doesn't hide your waist, and let the back hang. The shorts should land mid-thigh or just above the knee; much shorter and the long shirt looks like it's swallowing them. White, blue stripes or butter yellow. Over a fitted tank, you can leave it fully open on hot afternoons.
4. Crochet Top And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

Open-weave crochet needs a base layer for everyday wear, so I put a fitted tank or bandeau-style camisole under it in a tone close to the yarn. That keeps the eye on the stitch pattern rather than what's showing through. Flowy linen or cotton wide-leg pants balance the texture. Crochet snags easily on bag hardware and bracelets, so I keep jewelry simple and the bag woven. It packs well for a trip, though fold it rather than hang it, or it stretches.
5. Boatneck Tank Top And Midi Skirt Outfit

The boatneck runs straight across the collarbone, which makes the shoulders look wider and the neck longer. That's useful if your hips are fuller than your shoulders and less so if your shoulders are already broad. With a midi skirt in poplin or linen, it reads polished enough for a summer office. A satin midi is dressier but shows every water spot and sweat mark. Ballet flats or low slingbacks, and a shoulder bag.
6. Striped Top And White Jeans Outfit

Stripes and white jeans look fresh every summer. Heavy white denim is hot and can be see-through in thin cotton, so I check both before buying: a medium-weight cotton denim with a relaxed leg is the safe middle. Navy, red or tan stripes all go with white. Wear nude underwear, not white; it disappears under white denim. A woven belt and basket bag add summer texture without looking themed, and espadrilles keep it casual.
7. One Shoulder Top And Linen Trousers Outfit

One-shoulder tops do the decorating on their own. With high-waisted wide-leg linen trousers, the fitted top and loose pants balance each other. The trouble spot is the bra: a one-shoulder top needs a strapless or convertible bra, and I'd test it for an evening of reaching and sitting before wearing it out. Flat strappy sandals for day, kitten heels or block heels for dinner. Chocolate brown is my underrated pick for this one.
8. Eyelet Blouse And Denim Skirt Outfit

Eyelet is cotton with small embroidered holes, and the embroidery gives it body, so it stands away from the skin and stays cool. A white or cream eyelet blouse with a light-wash denim skirt looks pretty without trying hard. If the blouse has puff sleeves or volume, I keep the skirt slim; two full pieces together lose your shape. Wash eyelet gently, since the holes catch on zippers in a machine. Flat sandals or espadrilles for a market morning.
9. Graphic Tee And Maxi Skirt Outfit

Pairing a graphic tee with a maxi skirt takes the sweetness out of a flowy skirt. A full tuck works with thin cotton tees; thicker ones bunch at the waistband, so I knot those at the hip or do a front tuck instead. Pick a tee with at least one color from the skirt so the two don't fight. Sneakers make it casual, flat sandals make it lighter. A crossbody bag keeps hands free on a travel day.
10. Silk Camisole And Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

Silk and satin camisoles look dressy against denim, but they're sensitive in heat: silk shows sweat at the underarms and darkens where it's damp. I'd wear this for evenings rather than a midday walk. Light-wash wide-leg jeans with some room keep air moving. Ivory and champagne are lovely but unforgiving; black and sage hide marks better. Bring a linen blazer or shirt for cooler restaurants.
11. Halter Top And Tailored Shorts Outfit

Halter tops lift attention to the shoulders, and tailored pleated shorts keep the lower half structured. Pleats release a bit of room over the stomach and hips, which makes them more comfortable than flat-front shorts for many women. A knit halter in olive, black or red against beige or navy shorts is a strong mix. If the halter ties at the neck, go for a wide strap; thin strings get uncomfortable by afternoon. Flat sandals and a slim belt.
12. Polo Top And Pleated Skirt Outfit

A polo with a pleated skirt is sporty and neat. I prefer a slightly relaxed polo in cotton or a fine knit; very fitted piqué polos pull at the button placket on a fuller bust. A tennis-style mini is playful, a longer pleated midi gives more coverage and a sharper look. White sneakers and crew socks keep it casual; loafers make it polished. Pleats lose their crease after washing unless you hang the skirt to dry, so skip the dryer.
13. Off Shoulder Top And Linen Skirt Outfit

Off-shoulder tops can be fussy if the elastic is loose, because the neckline creeps up your arms all day. I look for a firm band or a ruched top that grips. With a neutral linen midi or maxi, the outfit stays relaxed. If you need bra support, a wider neckline is easier to wear with a strapless bra than a very low one. Flat sandals or espadrille wedges, a woven clutch and gold hoops.
14. Vest Top And Matching Shorts Outfit

A waistcoat as a top is one of the most practical summer sets I know. A linen or cotton waistcoat-style top with matching tailored shorts looks finished at once, and the vest also layers open over a tank later in the season. Check the buttons across the bust before you buy; vests are cut close and gape easily. Cream, olive or soft blue. Low mules or minimal sneakers and a structured mini bag.
15. Sheer Shirt And Tank Top Outfit

A sheer shirt over a tank gives you sleeves and coverage without weight, which is why I use it for sun protection on hot days. The tank underneath decides the whole look: match its color to the shirt for a soft effect, or to your skin for a cleaner line. Cotton voile is cooler than synthetic mesh, which can feel clammy. Linen trousers, relaxed jeans or tailored shorts all work below. Ivory, pale blue and sage stay airy.
16. Peplum Top And Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

A peplum top flares out at the waist, so it does the shaping for you without anything tight. I like it with straight-leg jeans because the clean leg contrasts with the flare; skinny jeans can make the hip look heavier and wide-leg jeans compete with it. Cotton or linen peplums stay crisp; a jersey peplum just hangs. Ballet flats or woven slides and a small top-handle bag. Leave jewelry minimal if the peplum is full.
17. Tube Top And Cargo Pants Outfit

Tube tops are only as good as their grip, so I look for one with silicone along the top edge. Paired with lightweight cotton or nylon cargo pants, it has a relaxed street style edge, and the loose pants balance the bare shoulders. Platform slides or sneakers for a festival, and a nylon shoulder bag that won't scuff skin. A linen shirt tied at the waist is the coverage you'll want when the sun gets strong.
18. Floral Blouse And White Shorts Outfit

A floral blouse with white shorts is cheerful and simple. Gauze or cotton breathes best in a printed blouse; polyester florals look the same but trap heat. When the print is busy, keep shorts and sandals plain so they don't compete; with a softer print, colored earrings work. Linen white shorts are cooler but see-through in thin weaves, so check them in daylight. Good for a patio lunch or a vacation morning.
19. Knit Tank Top And Maxi Skirt Outfit

A knit tank looks richer than a tee and drapes better, so a maxi skirt and a ribbed tank make a nicer outfit than the sum of its parts. Lightweight cotton or linen yarn is the summer choice; acrylic knits sweat. A slim column skirt reads modern and minimal, a full one breezier. I like both for travel because the tank also works with shorts and the skirt with a tee. Leather slides and a woven tote.
20. Colorful Blouse And Neutral Pants Outfit

A bright blouse over neutral pants is how I add color to a wardrobe without asking someone to buy a whole bright closet. Coral, cobalt, tomato red or lemon yellow against beige linen or cream jeans. Strong colors flatter some complexions more than others, so I hold the blouse up near the face in daylight before buying; if your skin looks gray, try a different shade of the same color. Neutral bag and shoes keep it clean.
Keeping Pale Tops From Yellowing
White and cream tops are the backbone of a summer wardrobe, and they go yellow at the underarms faster than anything else. That's mostly a reaction between sweat and antiperspirant, not dirt. Letting deodorant dry fully before you dress helps a lot, and so does washing pale tops after one wear in hot weather rather than two.
- Wash in cool or warm water; hot water can set protein stains from sweat.
- Dry in shade or indoors. Strong sun can yellow some synthetics and fade colors on the other side of the garment.
- Hand wash or use a mesh bag for crochet, eyelet and silk, which snag in a busy machine.
- Store linen folded with a little room, not packed tight, so creases don't set in for the season.
Build From the Top Down
Summer outfits get easier when you think top-first. A few tops in breathable fabrics, cut to sit well at your waist, will carry the same shorts, linen trousers and skirts through months of hot weather. Treat the pairings here as formulas: swap colors and shoes, keep the shape. And when a top makes you tug or sweat through it by lunch, that's the one to replace first.
