If I could keep only one summer top, it would be a button-down shirt. It's the piece I build the most outfits from: tucked into shorts, knotted over a skirt, thrown open over a tank, or buttoned halfway over a swimsuit. Crisp white poplin, relaxed linen, soft chambray and printed versions each behave differently, and that's what makes the shirt so useful. It goes to brunch, on errands and into a suitcase when you're packing for a beach vacation. Below are 30 complete outfits, top to shoes, with the small styling details that make each one work.

Poplin, Linen or Chambray: Picking the Shirt for Your Climate
The outfits below use a few different shirtings, and they don't feel the same on a humid afternoon. When I help someone build a summer wardrobe, the fabric decides which shirt does which job.
- Linen is the coolest. Its loose weave lets air through and it dries quickly, but it creases the moment you sit. Accept the wrinkles or choose a linen blend.
- Cotton poplin is crisp and tidy, the best for tucked, office-ready looks. The tight weave holds a collar's shape but traps a little more heat.
- Chambray looks like denim but is much lighter, and it softens nicely with every wash. Good for casual outfits and knots.
- Seersucker and eyelet have a texture that keeps fabric off the skin, which feels cooler in humidity than any smooth weave.
Fit comes next. Check where the shoulder seam lands: on an oversized shirt it can drop past the shoulder, but on a fitted one it should sit right at the edge of the shoulder bone. And button the shirt and stand side-on in a mirror. If the placket pulls open across the bust, size up and tuck, or sew a small snap between the buttons that gape.
1. White Button Down With Denim Shorts Summer Outfit

A slightly oversized white button-down, half-tucked into light-wash high-waisted denim shorts, is the outfit I reach for without thinking. Roll the sleeves to just below the elbow and leave the top two buttons open. The half-tuck matters: tuck only the front few inches at the center button so the waist shows and the back still hangs loose over the seat. White canvas sneakers, a thin brown leather belt, tortoiseshell sunglasses and a woven crossbody finish it for a farmers' market or a patio lunch.
2. Linen Button Down With Wide Leg Trousers Summer Outfit

Linen in a soft oatmeal or sand is my choice when you want to look polished and stay cool. Tuck it loosely into cream wide-leg trousers that skim the floor; the loose top and fluid trouser create one long, relaxed line. Flat leather sandals with a square toe and a minimal tote keep the shape clean. A fine chain and slim oval sunglasses finish it. It goes from the office to an outdoor dinner. Have the trousers hemmed with the sandals on, because a floor-length hem that drags gets dirty and frays within a week.
3. Chambray Button Down With Tailored Shorts Summer Outfit

Chambray looks like denim but weighs about half as much, which is why I like it in July. Wear it with a front half-tuck over crisp khaki tailored shorts that end at mid-thigh. Soft blue against warm beige feels fresh. White low-top sneakers and a tan leather belt keep it casual, and a woven bucket hat and canvas tote suit weekend errands, a park picnic or an afternoon in a new neighborhood. Chambray softens a little with every wash, so an older shirt often looks better here than a brand-new stiff one.
4. Striped Button Down With White Denim Shorts Summer Outfit

A blue-and-white striped button-down gives a little more interest than a solid neutral. Choose a relaxed fit with a soft collar, roll the sleeves high and tuck it fully into high-waisted white denim shorts. Bare legs and neutral flat sandals keep it light. A straw tote and gold hoops create that French summer look without loud accessories. It suits a boardwalk walk or a seafood lunch. Vertical stripes on a full tuck lengthen the torso; if your waist is short, a half-tuck keeps the stripes from looking cut off.
5. Oversized White Button Down With Biker Shorts Summer Outfit

Wear an oversized white poplin button-down fully open over a fitted white tank tucked into black biker shorts. A roomy, structured shirt over snug sporty shorts is a strong formula for hot city days, because the shirt does the covering and the shorts do the comfort. White crew socks scrunched into chunky black slides give it a street edge, and sleek black sunglasses and a mini shoulder bag finish it. Let the shirt hang longer than the shorts so they look like a base layer, not the main event. Good for iced coffee or a rooftop hangout.
6. Pastel Button Down With Linen Blend Pants Summer Outfit

Pastel button-downs in powder pink, butter yellow or sky blue are a quick way to add color without looking loud. I'd pick a short-sleeve version and tuck it into light beige linen-blend straight-leg pants. Pale on pale stays fresh in direct sun. White leather flip-flops or slides and a beige canvas tote keep the palette gentle. Pearl drop earrings and loose hair finish it for brunch, a baby shower or a garden party. Pale yellow is the trickiest pastel next to fair skin; hold it to your face in daylight before you buy.
7. Sleeveless Button Down With Linen Shorts Summer Outfit

A sleeveless button-down in white cotton or a linen blend keeps you cool while the collar and placket still look tidy. Tuck it into beige pull-on linen shorts with a relaxed leg. Brown leather sandals with a small heel lengthen the leg, and a rattan circle bag adds texture. Two or three thin gold bracelets are enough for a casual office day or a daytime event. Check the armholes before buying; sleeveless shirts that are cut deep show your bra at the side, and that's what makes them look unfinished.
8. Button Down Shirt Dress With Flat Sandals Summer Outfit

On mornings when you want one piece and done, a cotton midi shirt dress delivers. Soft blue or olive with a removable tie belt defines the waist. Roll the sleeves and leave the top two buttons open. Flat tan slides keep it relaxed, and a woven tote and oval sunglasses finish an everyday warm-weather look for farmers' markets, museum afternoons or dinner outside. Shirt dresses can gape between buttons at the bust when you sit; a hidden snap sewn between the buttons solves it in five minutes.
9. White Button Down Tied At Waist With Maxi Skirt Summer Outfit

Instead of buttoning a light white shirt, knot it at the front. Over a flowing black or floral maxi skirt, the knot creates a waist and a cropped shape without cutting anything. I tie it just above the skirt's waistband, so a sliver of skin shows only when you move. Brown strappy heeled sandals lengthen the leg, and a small structured bag keeps it from looking too bohemian. A few stacked rings or one cuff bracelet are all the jewelry it needs. Use a shirt with long tails, because a short hem won't knot neatly.
10. Cropped White Button Down With High Waisted Jeans Summer Outfit

A cropped button-down that stops right at the top of the waistband lengthens the leg, because the eye reads the high-waisted jeans as a longer stretch. Wear a crisp white cropped shirt with straight-leg jeans in a soft medium wash. Leave the top button open and roll the sleeves. Pointed-toe beige mules sit close to many skin tones and extend the leg line further. A fine gold chain at the open collar finishes it for a casual date, a gallery opening or a rooftop drink. The crop only works with a truly high rise; with a mid-rise jean, it shows more stomach than intended.
11. Printed Short Sleeve Button Down With Denim Midi Skirt Summer Outfit

A short-sleeve button-down in a small floral or abstract print brings personality without weight. Tuck it into a front-slit denim midi skirt. White platform sneakers make it young and comfortable, and a slim black belt gives contrast at the waist. Black cat-eye sunglasses and a compact crossbody finish it for shopping or a casual dinner. Small prints are the easier choice for most people; large ones make a short-sleeve shirt look boxy because the pattern breaks across the shoulders.
12. Linen Button Down Matching Set Summer Outfit

A matching set removes the question of what goes with what. A relaxed short-sleeve linen button-down and high-waisted linen shorts in sage or natural oatmeal make an outfit instantly. Neutral flat espadrilles pick up the linen's texture, and a straw visor and big sunglasses push it toward resort wear. A single leather-strap watch is all the jewelry needed. Wear it to a beachside lunch or on a weekend trip. Buy the two pieces at the same time; linen fades slightly with washing, and a top and bottom bought months apart rarely match.
13. White Button Down With White Jeans Summer Outfit

All white with a button-down feels crisp rather than clinical when you mix textures. A slightly oversized white poplin shirt with slim or straight-leg white jeans has a matte cotton against a softer denim finish. Nude suede sandals keep the leg line long, and a woven beige shoulder bag brings warmth. A silver cuff or a simple pendant finishes it. It's strong for evening events and sunset dinners. Two different whites side by side can look dingy, so I always match the undertone: bright white with bright white, cream with cream.
14. Button Down Open Over Crop Top And Wide Leg Pants Summer Outfit

Wear a short-sleeve striped button-down completely open over a fitted black crop top tucked into high-waisted cream wide-leg pants that graze the floor. A structured shirt, a fitted midriff and fluid pants give three different shapes that still feel planned. Black slides and a chunky woven shoulder bag keep it grounded for an evening gallery walk or a rooftop dinner. The open shirt works only if it's short-sleeved and lightweight; a long-sleeve open shirt over wide pants adds too much fabric and swallows a smaller frame.
15. Chambray Button Down Tied At Waist With White Mini Skirt Summer Outfit

Take a lightweight chambray shirt, button only the top two buttons and knot the tails at your natural waist. Pair it with a simple white A-line mini. White low-profile sneakers keep it sporty, and a mini crossbody in coral or aqua adds a bright note. A chain anklet and a few thin silver rings keep everything light. It has a '90s feel that works for an outdoor festival, a day trip or a picnic date. Knotting at the natural waist, not the hip, is what keeps the mini from looking too short.
16. Oversized Blue Button Down With White Wide Leg Trousers Summer Outfit

A soft, slightly oversized blue shirt in light cotton or linen covers the arms without feeling heavy. Tuck it loosely into white wide-leg trousers that fall to the floor, and pull a little fabric out over the waistband so it blouses. Flat woven leather slides and a natural straw tote keep it relaxed. Round tortoiseshell sunglasses and a single chain bracelet are enough. The palette is calm and works for a beach vacation or a summer office. Blousing should be an inch, no more; let too much hang and the shirt looks untucked by accident.
17. Button Down Shirt With Trouser Shorts And Sandals Summer Outfit

For smart-casual days, tuck a soft white button-down fully into high-waisted beige trouser shorts that end a couple of inches above the knee. The tailored cut keeps it polished. Brown leather toe-ring sandals add warmth, and a structured leather shoulder bag gives it a grown-up finish. A slim gold watch and studs complete it for a casual office, a networking brunch or anywhere you want to look nice without trying too hard. A full tuck needs a shirt that's long in the back; a short hem pulls out every time you reach or sit.
18. Button Down As Beach Cover Up With Bikini Summer Outfit

An oversized white or light blue button-down is my favorite beach-to-lunch layer. Wear it open over a black or neutral bikini top and matching high-cut bottoms, sleeves rolled. Rubber slides handle sand, and a canvas tote holds a towel and sunscreen. A wide-brim straw hat and dark sunglasses add sun protection. When you head to a seaside café, do up a few buttons and you're covered. Linen dries faster than heavy cotton, so it's the better shirt if you'll be pulling it on over a damp swimsuit.
19. Poplin Button Down With A Line Mini Skirt Summer Outfit

Crisp white poplin with a structured A-line mini in black or navy is a classic pairing. Tuck the shirt in fully and add a thin leather belt in the skirt's color for a sharp waistline. Ballet flats or low block-heel sandals keep it walkable. A small top-handle bag in a neutral and pearl studs or small hoops finish it. It works for a summer office, a graduation party or an afternoon tea. Poplin is crisp because of its tight weave, which also makes it a little warmer than linen, so this is my pick for air-conditioned days.
20. Striped Linen Button Down With Trouser Shorts Summer Outfit

A blue-and-white vertical-stripe linen shirt tucked into navy trouser shorts at mid-thigh makes a nautical outfit. The stripes lengthen the torso and the tailored shorts keep it sleek. Espadrille wedges add height, a brown leather belt bridges the blues, and a woven shopper and gold earrings add warmth. It's my pick for a seaside dinner or an evening on a boat. Wedge espadrilles have rope soles that soak up water, so keep them off wet decks and docks.
21. Black Button Down With Beige Tailored Shorts Summer Outfit

A black short-sleeve button-down tucked into beige tailored shorts looks sharper than most summer combinations. The dark top adds polish and the light shorts keep it seasonal. Beige flat sandals in nearly the same tone as the shorts make the leg look longer. A structured black crossbody repeats the shirt. A low ponytail and silver hoops finish it for an outdoor concert or a dinner reservation. Black absorbs sun, so choose a thin cotton or linen shirt and save this outfit for evenings.
22. Eyelet Button Down With Relaxed Denim Shorts Summer Outfit

An eyelet or broderie anglaise button-down has small embroidered cutouts that let air through, which makes it romantic and cool. Choose white or cream and wear it untucked over light-wash relaxed denim shorts. The texture turns the simple shorts-and-top formula into something more special. Tan flat sandals with woven straps and a braided leather crossbody suit the handmade feel, and a few thin gold rings finish it for a garden brunch, a baby shower or a vineyard date. Eyelet can show what's underneath, so I'd wear a nude camisole.
23. Button Down Layered Over Slip Dress Summer Outfit

An unbuttoned white or cream button-down over a silky slip dress covers your shoulders and arms and adds a sharp edge to the soft drape. A short or midi slip shows through the open front. Tie the shirt loosely at the waist for shape. Nude strappy heels and a pearl-trimmed mini bag dress it up, and a delicate choker or layered necklaces draw the eye to the face. It suits a summer wedding, a fancy brunch or any event where you want to look elegant and stay cool. Choose a thin, sheer-ish shirt here; a heavy oxford cloth flattens the slip completely.
24. Gingham Button Down With White Jeans Summer Outfit

Gingham always reads summer. A small-scale blue gingham button-down with short sleeves looks cheerful and picnic-ready. Tuck it into white straight-leg jeans with a wide woven leather belt. White sneakers keep it crisp, and a red lip adds a classic touch. A basket bag with leather straps fits the picnic mood without looking like a costume, and studs keep jewelry simple for a weekend away or an outdoor market. I prefer small checks; large gingham reads tablecloth very quickly.
25. Button Down Vest With Matching Trousers Summer Outfit

A sleeveless button-down vest with matching relaxed trousers in a breathable linen-viscose blend is the most tailored outfit on this list. Soft beige or pale sage feels current. Wear it open over a white tank for airflow. Flat leather fisherman sandals keep it grounded, and a slim leather belt with minimal gold jewelry adds polish. It's right for a creative office, a gallery or a luncheon. The viscose in the blend is what stops the linen from creasing badly, which matters with a matching set where every wrinkle shows.
26. Floral Button Down With Linen Trousers Summer Outfit

A short-sleeve floral button-down in a soft, watercolor print adds romance, and solid ivory or sand linen trousers give it a calm base. Tuck the shirt loosely to mark the waist. Flat tan leather sandals are comfortable for hours of walking, and a canvas tote and simple sunhat make it vacation-ready. Fine gold jewelry and soft waves finish it for garden parties, outdoor weddings or wine tasting. Pull one color from the print for your bag or sandals, and the whole outfit will look planned.
27. Button Down With Cargo Pants And Sneakers Summer Outfit

Half-tuck a white cotton button-down into olive or khaki tapered cargo pants. The pockets add a functional edge and the shirt keeps the top half classic. White platform sneakers add height and a streetwear note. A black leather belt and a simple silver chain give it a downtown feel, and tortoiseshell sunglasses and a nylon shoulder bag finish it for city exploring or travel days. Cargo pockets add bulk at the hip, so I'd choose a pair with flat, stitched pockets if hips are where you carry weight.
28. Button Down Tied At Waist With Denim Culottes Summer Outfit

Cropped wide-leg denim culottes have a modern shape that goes well with a knotted button-down. Take a light white or pale blue shirt, fasten only the top two buttons and tie the ends at your waist. The cropped leg lets your ankles breathe. Flat nude sandals keep the leg line long, and a rattan bag, round sunglasses, a dainty anklet and a few bracelets give it a vacation feel for a museum, a coastal lunch or a sunny afternoon. Culottes shorten petite legs; a small wedge sandal fixes that better than a flat.
29. Button Down Shirt Dress Worn Open Over Jeans Summer Outfit

A sleeveless button-down shirt dress worn fully open turns into a long vest over a white tank and slim boyfriend jeans. The open front makes a vertical line that lengthens the body, and the layers add interest without weight. Neutral block-heel sandals keep it refined, and a tan structured bag with a simple gold chain finishes it. You get two outfits from one piece, and it's handy for days when evenings cool off or the air conditioning runs cold. Let the dress fall straight; belting it over jeans adds bulk at the hip.
30. Navy Button Down With White Linen Shorts Summer Outfit

Navy with crisp white linen shorts is a clean, nautical pairing. Tuck the navy button-down in fully and add a brown braided leather belt for warmth. Natural espadrille flats keep the preppy summer mood, and a canvas tote with navy trim and a simple bangle complete it for an afternoon on a boat or a coastal dinner. Navy is my suggestion for anyone who finds black too harsh in summer; it gives the same contrast and polish with a softer look against the skin.
Tucks, Knots and Sleeve Rolls That Last Until Evening
Most of these outfits depend on one small move, and the usual problem is that it falls apart by lunch. Here's how I make each one stay put.
The half-tuck
Tuck only the front panel, from the center button to just past each side seam, then pull it out slightly so it softens. A belt holds it far better than a waistband alone. Leave the back loose over the seat.
The front knot
Fasten the shirt up to the point you want, take the two tails, cross them and tie a single knot, then tuck the ends up under the knot. A double knot on a crisp shirt is too bulky. Soft fabrics like chambray and washed linen hold a knot best.
The sleeve roll
For a roll that won't slide, fold the cuff up once to just below the elbow, then fold the sleeve up again over the cuff so only a sliver of the cuff edge shows. Stop there. Rolling above the elbow on a long sleeve pinches the arm and creases the fabric.
If you're petite, the knot and the half-tuck do more for your proportions than any shirt length, because they show where your waist is. If you're tall, a long shirt worn open as a layer is easier to wear than a crop.
A Shirt That Changes With How You Wear It
What makes a button-down so useful in summer is how much it changes with a small adjustment: a full tuck for the office, a half-tuck for errands, a knot over a maxi skirt, wide open over a swimsuit. Start with the fabric that suits your days, cotton, linen or chambray, then build each look with the bottoms, shoes and simple accessories you already own. If you only buy one new shirt, make it a slightly oversized white one in a fabric you'd wear in your hottest week, and try a few of these combinations before adding anything else.
