Dazai is one of the kindest characters to sew for. There's no armour and no giant prop, just tailoring you can largely buy or thrift: a long coat, a vest, trousers, a collar tie and those bandages. The anime gives him several eras, from the Agency detective to the Port Mafia executive, and each one changes the colours and the cut. I've grouped canon versions first, then feminine, seasonal, budget and creative takes, with the hair, makeup, props and shoes for each. When I plan one, the coat comes first, because it's the piece people read from across a hall and the hardest to fake.

Getting His Trench Coat Right Before Anything Else
The sand-coloured trench is Dazai's outline, and it's the piece most first attempts get wrong. A short raincoat or a grey-beige mac reads as ordinary outerwear. His coat is long, loose and a warm sandy tan.
- Length: aim for mid-calf. A knee-length coat looks like a regular trench; a longer one moves the way his does when you walk.
- Shoulders: buy for these, because shoulders are the one part that's expensive to alter. Sleeves and hems are easy.
- Fabric: cotton gabardine drapes and creases like his. Shiny polyester catches flash and looks costume-shop in photos.
- Colour: hold it next to a light blue shirt and a black vest in daylight. If the trio looks right together, the shade is close enough.
When I shorten a thrifted trench that's too long, I take it up from the hem and keep the original vent. It's a straight hem with a blind stitch, and much simpler than trying to lengthen a coat that's too short.
1. Armed Detective Agency Dazai Cosplay

This is the Dazai most people picture, so the colours matter more than the brands. A light blue or white button-down, black vest, tan trousers and a long sand-coloured trench. The tie is a dark ribbon or bolo-style cord with a turquoise centre, and I'd make that rather than buy it, because shop versions are often the wrong blue. A short, tousled brown wig with curved bangs on both sides of the face. Wrap breathable bandages around the neck and forearms loosely enough to slide a finger under. Soft brown liner, light under-eye shading and a neutral lip. A small notebook to carry, and brown lace-ups or flat ankle boots for a long day.
2. Port Mafia Dazai Cosplay

The Port Mafia version swaps the sand coat for black and turns him severe. A white dress shirt under a fitted black vest and black blazer, tailored black trousers and a long black coat, with a narrow black tie. The wig wants slightly heavier bangs than the Agency look. The eye bandage is the detail people check, and also the one that causes trouble: covering one eye flattens your depth perception, so I sew the eye wrap onto a thin headband you can push up for stairs and escalators. Matching wraps at the neck and forearms. Pale makeup with smudged brown shadow under the visible eye, a closed black folder, and polished black boots.
3. Dark Era Dazai Cosplay

The Dark Era look sits between the two: Mafia colours with a looser, more tired hang. A white shirt buttoned all the way, a black vest, dark trousers and a black overcoat to the knee, with a slim dark tie. Messy is the key word for the wig. I separate the strands around the forehead and ears with a little wax and leave them uneven on purpose. One eye covered with light bandages, wraps at the neck and arms. Matte foundation and grey-brown shading under the visible eye give that worn-out look without stage makeup. An old paperback or a plain matchbox-shaped prop, then black dress shoes with cushioned insoles.
4. Beast Dazai Cosplay

Beast Dazai is the most formal of the lot, and the long red scarf is what tells people which version you are. A crisp white shirt, black tie, fitted black suit jacket, grey-brown trousers and a sweeping black coat. Drape the maroon scarf over the shoulders so it hangs down the front, rather than winding it round the neck. A lightweight scarf in a soft knit or wool blend drapes better than stiff acrylic. This version wears a lot of bandaging: one eye, the neck and both arms. A dark brown wig with smoother sides and controlled bangs, pale matte makeup and defined brows. A slim black document case and black leather-look dress shoes.
5. Dead Apple Dazai Cosplay

The Dead Apple look is brighter and more refined, built around a long white or ivory coat. Layer it over a light shirt, fitted vest and pale trousers, then bring in dark contrast through the tie, belt or gloves. Without that contrast, an all-pale costume photographs as one flat shape. White coats show every mark, so I'd pick a washable cotton blend over anything dry-clean only. Softly curled bangs on the brown wig, bandages at the neck and arms, a light complexion and muted brown liner. A polished red apple is the obvious prop and costs almost nothing. Black or brown ankle boots keep the pale outfit grounded.
6. Prison Dazai Cosplay

Prison Dazai is the comfortable one, a loose white top and white trousers from his time held in Meursault. The fabric is what makes it read as a uniform rather than pyjamas: an opaque cotton drill or twill with a crisp edge, not soft jersey. I check opacity by holding the fabric up to a window, because thin white cotton shows everything under bright lights. Keep the fit relaxed but correct at the shoulders and waist. A messy brown wig with uneven bangs, minimal makeup with brown liner and light under-eye contour. Bandages at the neck and forearms, leaving fingers and joints free. A paperback or small puzzle cube, and white canvas sneakers.
7. Fifteen-Year-Old Dazai Cosplay

Fifteen-year-old Dazai suits teen cosplayers, or adults who want a younger look. A white collared shirt, dark vest, black trousers and a black coat a size too big, with a narrow tie. The oversized coat is the point: at fifteen he's swimming in it, so I leave the sleeves a little long instead of hemming them. This is the era when he first meets Chuuya, which makes it a natural pick for a duo. Fluffy volume at the crown of the wig with wispy bangs, one eye covered with breathable wraps, loose-looking bandages at the neck and arms. Light brown shadow around the visible eye, black lace-up boots and a vintage notebook.
8. Manga Dazai Cosplay

A manga Dazai is a colour exercise. Keep the Agency shapes but rebuild them in black, white and grey: white shirt, charcoal vest, mid-grey trousers and a pale grey trench, with a black, silver or white tie in place of the turquoise. Pick a dark brown wig that reads nearly black under bright light, and style the strands into sharper, more graphic points. Grayscale makeup with matte foundation, grey contour and black liner. White or pale grey bandages. When I shop for this, I take a phone photo of each piece in black-and-white mode, which shows quickly whether two greys clash. A monochrome notebook, charcoal lace-ups, and a plain white wall for photos.
9. Wan Dazai Cosplay

The comedy spin-off gives Dazai round, soft proportions, so the costume should feel looser and cuter than canon. Keep his pale shirt, black vest, tan trousers and sand coat, but go a size up and choose softer fabrics. A fluffy brown wig with rounded bangs. Tidy, minimal bandages at the neck and arms. Peach blush, slightly enlarged liner and tiny highlights under the eyes give the cheerful chibi face. The prop is where you can play: a plush crab is the one fans will get. Flat brown loafers keep the proportions right. Expressive poses do more for this version than any detail of the outfit.
10. Entrance Exam Dazai Cosplay

The early-Agency look from his entrance exam is Dazai at his neatest, so everything should look freshly pressed. A white shirt, fitted black vest, straight tan trousers and a spotless beige trench, with the dark ribbon tie and a blue-green stone at the centre. I press the trench with a cloth between iron and fabric, since many trench fabrics go shiny under a direct iron. A smoother wig than usual, with a few curved strands over the forehead. Clean natural makeup, fresh white bandages, and a slim notebook or case folder. Dark brown Oxfords and matching socks suit anyone who'd rather wear tailoring than distressed pieces.
11. Female Armed Detective Agency Dazai Cosplay

A feminine Dazai keeps every colour and changes only the cut. A pale button-down blouse, a fitted black waistcoat, high-waisted tan trousers and a long beige trench, or a knee-length tan skirt with opaque tights. Women's trench coats often come with a fitted waist and flared skirt, which looks less like Dazai than a straight cut, so I'd check the men's rail too. The signature ribbon tie with its turquoise centre. A short wavy bob or a longer wig pinned into a low twist with curved bangs. Soft brown liner and an understated rose lip. Bandages at the neck and wrists, a notebook in a brown satchel, and loafers or low block-heel boots.
12. Female Port Mafia Dazai Cosplay

The female Port Mafia version is all about structure. A white blouse, fitted black vest, straight black trousers or a black midi with opaque tights, and a long black overcoat, plus a narrow black tie and a plain black belt. Shoulder fit is the one thing I can't alter cheaply on a coat, so I'd buy for the shoulders and take in the waist or sleeves afterward. A short layered brown wig or shoulder-length hair with curled bangs. Matte foundation, smoky brown liner and soft contour around the visible eye, breathable bandages over one eye, the neck and forearms. A black document portfolio doubles as a bag. Black flat boots beat heels here.
13. Plus Size Dazai Cosplay

For plus size Dazai, fit is everything, and oversized fabric only hides the tailoring that makes him read. Choose a pale shirt with room across the shoulders, a vest that closes without pulling, and straight or wide-leg tan trousers. If a vest pulls at the buttons, I'd let out the side seams or add a strip of matching fabric at the back, where the coat will cover it. An open-front beige trench with an adjustable belt, and the dark ribbon tie with a turquoise button. Volume at the crown of a short brown wig, natural brown eye makeup and loose bandages. A light notebook or messenger bag, and wide-fit ankle boots or cushioned lace-ups.
14. Closet Dazai Cosplay

A closet Dazai is mostly about the colour combination, the coat, the hair and the bandages. A pale blue office shirt, black sweater vest, khaki trousers and a beige raincoat or thrifted trench. A thin black scarf stands in for the bolo tie, held with a blue-green button or clip. Your own brown hair works if you have it, styled with water-based wax, or a basic short wig. For wraps, I'd cut strips from an old white T-shirt rather than raiding the first-aid kit; jersey doesn't fray and you keep the real bandages for real use. Simple brown liner, a paperback or office folder, and plain dark shoes.
15. Last-Minute Dazai Cosplay

With a day to go, focus on what makes him recognisable and forget exact copies. A white button-down, a dark vest or cardigan, tan trousers and any knee-length beige coat. Tie a narrow black ribbon under the collar and sew or glue a teal bead or button to the knot. Separate short brown hair into bangs, or use an inexpensive wig without heavy cutting. A little brown liner and soft shading under the eyes. Wrap white fabric strips loosely around the neck and wrists so you can still move. A plain notebook becomes the detective prop. Dark shoes from your closet are fine, and the whole thing holds up for a busy Halloween night.
16. Budget Thrift Store Dazai Cosplay

Thrifting suits Dazai because his pieces are ordinary clothes. Look in both the men's and women's sections for a beige trench, a pale dress shirt, a dark vest, straight tan trousers and brown shoes. Exact shades don't need to match as long as the overall palette stays neutral. When I thrift a trench, I check the lining and the buttons first: a torn lining is an easy fix, missing original buttons are not. Make the ribbon tie from black fabric with a painted blue button. Wash a secondhand wig according to its care label before trimming it. Inexpensive stage makeup handles the liner. Small alterations at the waist and sleeves make cheap pieces look tailored.
17. Summer Dazai Cosplay

In hot weather, the trench is the problem, so I'd treat it as a prop. A breathable short-sleeve pale shirt, a light black vest and loose tan trousers in a linen blend or thin suiting, with the coat carried over one shoulder for photos. Linen creases quickly, which is fine for Dazai; he isn't a tidy character. Wear the ribbon tie for posing if it gets too warm. A ventilated short wig over a breathable cap helps. Waterproof brown liner, translucent powder and light under-eye shading. Narrow wraps at the neck and wrists instead of heavy layers. A pocket notebook, breathable loafers with no-show socks and cushioned insoles.
18. Winter Dazai Cosplay

The long coat makes winter the easiest season for Dazai. A thermal top under the pale button-down, then the black vest, lined tan trousers and a heavy beige trench, with skin-tone thermal leggings underneath if you need more warmth. A dark brown scarf can sit beneath the neck bandages without changing the look. Wind lifts short wigs at the hairline, so I pin it at the temples and nape with extra pins. Moisturising foundation, brown liner and a neutral lip balm, since cold air dries skin fast. A leather-look notebook or messenger bag. Dark brown lace-up boots with warm socks, and a coat with real pockets for gloves and your phone.
19. Rainy Day Dazai Cosplay

Dazai's trench is literally a raincoat, so a wet day works in your favour. Choose a water-resistant beige trench over a pale shirt, black vest, cropped tan trousers and the ribbon tie. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics handle damp better than pure cotton. Flexible hairspray holds the wig without going sticky in humidity. Waterproof liner and a matte setting spray keep the face in place. Wet bandages sag and turn see-through, so I'd use narrow wraps cut from quick-drying polyester knit. A clear or dark brown umbrella is the prop, with a waterproof cover on the notebook. Rain boots or water-resistant ankle boots, and a covered walkway for photos.
20. Convention Comfort Dazai Cosplay

For a long day on your feet, build the costume around how it moves. A stretch-cotton shirt, a soft pull-on vest, elastic-back tan trousers and an unlined beige coat. I sew the ribbon tie straight onto the shirt under the collar so it never twists or needs straightening, and close the bandages with hidden snaps instead of tight wraps. A light wig with an open-weft cap breathes better than a dense one. Long-wearing but breathable makeup with brown liner and soft under-eye contour. Swap a handheld prop for a small brown crossbody bag shaped like a notebook case. Supportive walking shoes matter more than anything else here.
21. Formal Dazai Cosplay

Imagine Dazai dressed for an Agency dinner. A crisp ivory shirt, fitted black waistcoat, tailored camel trousers and a long beige overcoat, with the ribbon tie upgraded to black velvet and a polished turquoise brooch. Velvet ribbon frays at the cut ends, so I seal them with a touch of clear fabric glue or fold them under before stitching. Smooth waves in the wig with clearly separated bangs and a tidy back. Natural matte foundation, precise brown liner and soft contour under the cheekbones. Clean, evenly layered bandages look deliberate next to formal tailoring. A small hardbound notebook or slim clutch, and polished dark brown Oxfords or low-heel boots.
22. Casual Dazai Cosplay

A casual Dazai is one you could wear to a café without anyone blinking. A pale blue shirt under a black knit vest, relaxed khaki chinos and an open beige car coat. A thin dark scarf tied loosely at the neck with a small teal pin stands in for the tie. Natural brown hair or a soft wig in tousled, side-curving bangs. Brown mascara, light liner and gentle shading under the eyes. I'd add the neck and wrist bandages only for photos and pocket them the rest of the time. A canvas messenger bag with a notebook inside, and brown sneakers or suede-look ankle boots. It keeps his neutral palette while looking like everyday clothes.
23. Modern Streetwear Dazai Cosplay

The streetwear take keeps his colours and changes every shape. An oversized pale button-down under a cropped black utility vest, loose tan cargo trousers and a long beige technical coat. A narrow black neck strap with a turquoise clasp replaces the formal tie. A shaggy brown wig with extra texture and lifted pieces at the crown. Smudged brown liner and a matte complexion. Keep the arm wraps fitted and clear of the cargo pocket flaps, because velcro and snaps catch on loose fabric and pull threads. A compact crossbody notebook bag, and brown high-tops or chunky lace-up boots for anyone who prefers relaxed shapes to tailoring.
24. Dark Academia Dazai Cosplay

Dazai is named after a novelist, and his wardrobe slips easily into dark academia. A cream shirt, chocolate-brown waistcoat, pleated tan trousers and a long camel overcoat, with a black ribbon tie and a muted teal stone. Tousled brown curls suit the vintage campus feel. Matte brown shadow, thin liner and understated contour. I'd tea-stain the bandages to ivory, which takes a few minutes in a bowl of strong tea and blends them into the warm palette. An aged-looking hardcover, a fountain-pen prop and a brown leather-look satchel. Dark brogues or lace-up ankle boots with patterned socks. It reads as Dazai without copying the Agency uniform.
25. Light Academia Dazai Cosplay

Light academia softens everything to cream, beige and pale blue. A powder-blue shirt, oatmeal waistcoat, light tan trousers and an ivory trench, keeping the black ribbon tie with a brighter turquoise centre so there's still one dark accent near the face. Airy waves in the wig with lightly curled bangs and very little product. Fresh natural makeup with soft brown liner and peach blush, but keep the faint under-eye shading so he still looks like himself. Cream bandages in clean, even layers. A pale notebook, canvas book bag or a few paper flowers. Pale outfits pick up dirt at the hem first, so I'd keep the coat on a hanger until you arrive.
26. Noir Detective Dazai Cosplay

Noir pushes the detective side darker. A white dress shirt, charcoal waistcoat, dark brown trousers and a long taupe trench, with a narrow black tie and a small blue-green tie pin as a nod to his usual collar. A strong side part and controlled waves in the wig. Matte foundation, defined brown liner and grey shadow under the eyes. Let the neck and arm bandages show beneath the coat sleeves; if the sleeves cover them, I shorten the wraps' starting point to the wrist so a band always peeks out. A case file, magnifying glass or folded city map, with leather-look gloves tucked in a pocket. Polished brown lace-ups.
27. Victorian Dazai Cosplay

A Victorian Dazai keeps the silhouette and adds period detail. A high-collared ivory shirt, fitted black waistcoat, straight tan trousers and a long beige frock-style coat, with a narrow black cravat held by a turquoise brooch. A frock coat is cut fitted to the waist with a full skirt, so if you're adapting a modern coat, I'd take in the side seams above the waist and leave the lower half loose. A wavy brown wig with slightly longer side pieces. Pale matte makeup, brown liner and soft cheek contour. Cream bandages showing beneath the cuffs. A leather-look journal or pocket watch, and dark brown button boots or low lace-up boots.
28. Steampunk Dazai Cosplay

Steampunk works when the brass stays in small doses. A cream shirt, fitted black vest, tan trousers and a long distressed beige coat, with a teal gear-shaped centre on the ribbon tie and a slim brown utility belt holding a notebook pouch. A messy brown wig with lifted bangs and a few brass clips hidden on one side. Brown liner, bronze shadow and subtle under-eye contour. Keep the bandages visible, since they're the signature. Goggles clipped to the belt or a decorative compass. I'd stop at three brass pieces; past that, the character disappears under the theme. Dark brown lace-up boots.
29. Gothic Dazai Cosplay

Gothic Dazai trades the warm neutrals for black, charcoal and deep brown. An ivory shirt under a fitted black brocade vest, slim charcoal trousers and a long black coat with a structured collar. A black velvet ribbon tie with a dark teal brooch. Dramatic separated bangs and a tousled crown in the wig. Pale matte makeup, smoky brown liner and muted grey under the eyes. Off-white bandages give the strongest contrast against the black coat. Brocade frays fast at cut edges, so if you're making the vest, I'd finish every seam before assembly. A black hardcover book with a plain cover, polished black ankle boots, and keep it literary rather than occult.
30. White Suit Dazai Cosplay

The white suit is a fan-made take that shines under bright stage lights. An ivory shirt, white fitted vest, tailored white trousers and a long cream overcoat, with Dazai's dark details carried by a black ribbon tie, a narrow belt and the turquoise collar stone. A warm brown wig with soft, controlled bangs stands out against the pale clothes. Natural matte makeup, thin brown liner and soft under-eye shading. Use ivory bandages a shade off from the suit so they don't vanish into it. White polyester suiting can turn see-through under flash, so I'd line the trousers or wear skin-tone shorts underneath. A red apple or black notebook, and white loafers or cream ankle boots.
31. Black Suit Dazai Cosplay

This version is easy to put together from formal basics. A white shirt, black vest, tailored black trousers, a black suit jacket and a long black coat, with a slim black ribbon tie and a turquoise pin linking it to the Agency look. A short brown wig with curved bangs and controlled volume at the ears. Light matte foundation, brown liner and grey-brown contour under the eyes. Off-white bandages at the neck and forearms break up all that black. Black fabrics from different shops rarely match, so I'd check the jacket and trousers side by side in daylight. A compact notebook or document case, and polished black Oxfords. It mixes his professional and Mafia wardrobes without copying either.
32. Red Scarf Dazai Cosplay

Here the red scarf leads, borrowed from his darker alternate self. A white shirt, black waistcoat, charcoal trousers and a long black coat, with a deep burgundy scarf draped over both shoulders so the colour shows front and back. I tack the scarf to the coat at each shoulder seam with two hand stitches, which stops it sliding off in photos and crowds and snips out afterward. A dark brown wig with smooth sides and long face-framing bangs. Pale matte makeup, defined brows and smoky brown shading around the visible eye, plus a breathable eye covering and neck and arm bandages. A thin black folder or hardcover, and black dress shoes or flat boots.
33. Masquerade Dazai Cosplay

A masquerade Dazai adds decoration without hiding the character. An ivory ruffled shirt, black waistcoat, tailored tan trousers and a sweeping beige coat, with his black ribbon tie and turquoise centre. Soft formal waves and curved bangs in the wig. Natural foundation, brown smoky liner and a little gold near the eyes. The mask goes on a handle, held up for photos rather than worn all night, which keeps his face and bandages visible. If you make the handle, a length of wooden dowel glued and wrapped with ribbon is sturdy enough. A small hardcover as a second prop, and dark brown dress shoes or flat ankle boots.
34. Café Server Dazai Cosplay

An alternate-universe café Dazai is pure fun. A pale blue shirt, fitted black vest, tan trousers and a knee-length beige server apron, with a black ribbon tie and teal button, and a light trench over the top for arrival photos. An apron is an easy first sewing project: a rectangle of twill, hemmed on all sides, with long ties stitched to the top corners. A short brown wig with tousled bangs. Natural brown eye makeup, peach blush and faint under-eye shading. Keep the wrist bandages short so they stay out of food and drinks. An empty tray with a closed notebook on top, and dark brown non-slip loafers.
35. Halloween Dazai Cosplay

For Halloween, I keep Dazai himself intact and add the season in small touches. His pale shirt, black vest, tan trousers and beige trench, with the black ribbon tie and turquoise centre. A burnt-orange pocket square or a small pumpkin charm on the notebook brings in the colour. A messy brown wig with defined face-framing bangs. Brown liner, soft under-eye shading and a tiny bit of silver highlight instead of scary makeup, so it stays family-friendly. Breathable wraps at the neck and wrists. Carry a mini pumpkin with the detective notebook, and wear dark brown ankle boots with orange patterned socks peeking out.
Bandages You Can Slide On and Off in Seconds
Wrapping real bandages fresh each morning takes ages, loosens by lunch and leaves red marks if it's too tight. I make them as pieces you pull on.
Arms
Cut the leg off an old pair of skin-tone tights or use a stretchy sleeve as the base. Wrap strips of white cotton jersey around it in overlapping spirals, then tack each layer with a few hand stitches. It slides on like a sleeve and keeps its look all day.
Neck
Sew a few layers of wrap onto a soft band of elastic or knit that closes with a snap at the back. Keep it loose enough to turn your head and swallow comfortably.
Eye
Attach the eye wrap to a thin headband or a strip of elastic that hides under the wig. Use a single thin layer over the eye itself. Even then, one covered eye throws off your sense of distance, so flip it up for stairs and crowded walkways.
Making the Bolo Tie and Its Turquoise Stone
The little tie at Dazai's collar is small, but people look for it, and shop versions often use the wrong blue. It takes about an hour to make one that looks right.
- Cut two lengths of narrow black cord or ribbon, long enough to hang a few inches below the collar when tied.
- Pick a turquoise cabochon or a flat bead in a blue-green rather than a bright sky blue. Hold it next to the coat to check.
- Glue the stone to a flat button blank or bolo slide with a jewellery adhesive, and let it cure overnight.
- Thread the cords through the slide, knot or seal the ends, and stitch the slide lightly to the shirt collar so it can't drift sideways.
I make two and keep a spare in a pocket. The slide is the part most likely to pop off, and it's hard to replace once you've left home.
Dazai Lives in the Coat and the Wraps
Almost every Dazai on this list rests on the same five things: tousled brown hair, neutral tailoring, a long coat, a dark collar tie and well-placed bandages. Follow the Agency, Mafia, Beast, film or prison designs closely, or move him into academia, gothic, formal, feminine or seasonal looks. Whichever you choose, I'd put the effort into the coat's fit and make the bandages easy to take off, then add breathable wraps, a secure wig and shoes you can stand in all day. Start with the version whose coat you can find or sew most easily, and build the rest around it.
