A coordinated costume that both of you are excited about can turn into the Halloween photo you pull out for years. The 30 pairs below cover classic characters, animals, magical duos, food themes and a few simple DIY ideas, and each one is planned head to toe: clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes you can walk in. Many come together from closet basics, thrift finds and a few craft supplies. Familiar characters and pairs that tell a story together tend to land best with kids, as long as they're still comfortable after an hour on the sidewalk. I always ask the daughter which character she wants before anything else, because her enthusiasm decides whether the costume stays on.

Matching Twins or a Story Pair?
Mother-daughter costumes come in two kinds, and which one works usually depends on her age.
- Matching sets, like two witches or two black cats, suit younger girls who love looking exactly like Mom. They're also the easiest to make, since you cut everything twice from the same fabric.
- Story pairs, like Morticia and Wednesday or Glinda and Elphaba, suit tweens who want their own character. She gets to be someone distinct, and you only need one shared color or detail to link you.
- Role swaps work in both directions. Plenty of daughters would rather be the villain or the wolf, and many of the pairs below can be reversed.
Makeup is the other age call. For a young child I keep it to cheek color, a painted nose or a few dots, all in washable, skin-safe products tested on the inner wrist a day ahead. An older daughter can take more, like Elphaba's green or a winged liner, but I still do it with her sitting down and keep anything near the eyes to simple shapes.
1. Morticia And Wednesday Costume

Morticia and Wednesday is the easiest mother-daughter pair to recognize, and almost all of it is black clothing. Mom wears a floor-length black dress with flared sleeves, pointed black flats and long straight hair parted in the center, with smoky gray eyes, a deep berry lip and a single artificial rose. Her daughter wears a black dress with a crisp white collar, black tights and Mary Janes, with two neat braids and very light makeup or none at all. A small headless doll adds Wednesday's humor without anything graphic. I pin Morticia's hem up an inch or two for the sidewalk; the silhouette still reads, and she won't catch a heel on every step. Long sleeves make this a good pick for a chilly night.
2. Glinda And Elphaba Costume

Glinda and Elphaba works because the pink and green do the storytelling. Mom is Glinda in a pale pink maxi dress, a sparkling cape, silver flats and a tall rhinestone crown, with soft curls, rosy makeup with a little shimmer and a silver star wand. Her daughter is Elphaba in a long black dress, striped tights, lace-up ankle boots and a classic pointed hat, with a small decorative broom. Green face paint is the fussy part. I use a water-based, skin-safe paint applied thinly with a damp sponge, and do the hands last so they're dry before she touches anything. Swap roles if your daughter loves pink, and choose breathable dresses so the pair still feels good at a school party or on a long walk.
3. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Costume

Here the roles flip: the daughter is Little Red Riding Hood and Mom is the friendly wolf. The daughter wears a red hooded cape over a white blouse and a red or black skirt, opaque tights, sturdy ankle boots and braids, with a small light basket of artificial flowers that empties out for candy. Mom wears a gray sweater dress or fuzzy jumpsuit, gray leggings and comfortable boots, with a faux-fur tail, a soft ear headband and fingerless paw gloves. A little gray and brown shading around the nose gives the wolf effect without anything frightening. I fasten the cape with a snap or hook-and-loop tape at the neck rather than a tie, so it comes off quickly when she's warm indoors. Thermal shirts fit under both costumes on a cold night.
4. Queen Of Hearts And Alice Costume

Queen of Hearts and Alice is a fantasy pair built on playing-card colors. Mom wears a red, black and white full-skirted dress, heart-patterned tights and black ankle boots, with a gold crown, red lipstick and a heart on each cheek, and carries a fan covered in oversized playing cards instead of a staff. Her daughter is Alice in a blue knee-length dress over a white puff-sleeve blouse, a white apron, a black headband, white tights and Mary Janes, with soft curls and rosy cheeks, plus a plush white rabbit. I glue the cards onto a fan cut from craft foam rather than card stock; foam bends when it's bumped instead of creasing. Both costumes leave everyone free to move.
5. Mermaid And Sea Witch Costume

A little mermaid and her sea witch mom suit a daughter who likes Mom playing the villain. The daughter wears a purple seashell-style top over a fitted shirt, a green scale-print skirt and sparkly sneakers, with loose red waves or temporary red spray, pearl clips and iridescent face shimmer. Mom wears a black maxi dress with purple tentacle-shaped fabric panels, a short white wig, purple eye makeup, black flats and a shell necklace, with a gold-painted shell prop. Narrow mermaid skirts make walking hard, so I cut the daughter's skirt as a stretch-knit A-line that only suggests a tail. The tentacle panels hang better with a little fiberfill in just the tips and their tops sewn into the waist seam.
6. Belle And Mrs. Potts Costume

Belle with Mom as Mrs. Potts is a sweet storybook pair, and Mom's half is surprisingly easy. The daughter wears a yellow fit-and-flare gown, gold ballet flats and a half-up hairstyle tied with a yellow ribbon, with delicate gloves, rosy cheeks and a single artificial red rose. Mom wears a white tunic or sweatshirt decorated with purple, pink and gold felt like a teapot, white leggings and white sneakers, with a light foam spout at one side and a small lid-shaped headpiece. I put the spout on the side where Mom doesn't carry bags, and keep the felt flat and stitched down so it can't catch on straps or younger kids' hands. It's warm and works just as well at an indoor party or school event.
7. Cruella And Dalmatian Costume

Cruella and a Dalmatian puppy is bold black and white with a red accent. Mom wears a fitted black dress, a spotted faux-fur coat, red gloves and red low heels or flats, with a half-black, half-white wig, defined eyeliner and bright red lipstick, and a structured red handbag as her prop. Her daughter wears a white sweatshirt and leggings with removable black felt spots, floppy ears, a soft tail, black sneakers and a loose red collar, with a painted black nose. Some adhesive felt leaves residue on cotton, so I test one spot inside a hem first and switch to a few stitches if it grips too hard. Washable makeup keeps the white collar clean, and the whole pair is comfortable enough for a long night.
8. Barbie And Skipper Costume

Barbie and Skipper is a bright, sister-style pair and the most wearable one here. Mom wears a hot pink fit-and-flare dress, a cropped jacket, white heels or sneakers and a high ponytail, with pink sunglasses, glossy makeup, hoop earrings and a small handbag. Her daughter is Skipper in a striped T-shirt, a denim skirt or shorts over leggings, colorful sneakers and a light backpack, with a ponytail, a bright scrunchie and minimal makeup. The trick is repeating one exact shade of pink across both outfits; I take a swatch of Mom's dress along when shopping for the scrunchie and shoelaces. Nearly every piece can be worn again after Halloween.
9. Wonder Woman And Supergirl Costume

Wonder Woman and Supergirl let you coordinate in red, blue and gold while wearing different heroes. Mom wears a red fitted top with a blue star-print skirt or pants, a gold belt, red boots and gold wrist cuffs, with soft waves, natural makeup and a light gold headband. Her daughter wears a blue long-sleeve top, a red skirt, a red cape, a gold belt and red sneakers, with a side part and a little cheek shimmer. Capes should have breakaway fasteners. I make the gold cuffs from craft foam wrapped in metallic vinyl, which curves around a wrist and doesn't scratch the way painted cardboard does. Skip action props and strike a pose instead, and add warm leggings under either costume if it's cold.
10. Cinderella And Fairy Godmother Costume

Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother make a polished fairy-tale pair. The daughter wears a light blue princess dress with puff sleeves and a full skirt, white tights and glittery ballet flats, with a high bun, a blue headband and a black ribbon at her neck, plus a clear plastic slipper or a tiny pumpkin purse. Mom wears a pale blue or lavender maxi dress with a hooded cape, silver flats, a white wig or soft curls, luminous makeup and a star-tipped wand. Choose a dress without a hoop so the daughter can sit in a car seat or a classroom chair. For the neck ribbon, I use soft stretch velvet with a hook-and-loop closure, worn loose, rather than anything tied. Battery fairy lights stitched into Mom's cape add sparkle.
11. Matching Witch Costume

Two witches is the classic, and it adapts to any age. Mom wears a long black wrap dress, a purple velvet cape, a pointed hat, striped tights and buckled ankle boots, with plum eye makeup, dark berry lipstick and a small decorative broom. Her daughter wears a knee-length black tulle dress with green or purple accents, leggings, a smaller pointed hat and black sneakers or boots, with braids or loose curls and a few glitter stars near her cheeks. Matching moon necklaces tie the pair together. A soft, collapsible brim is the detail I look for, since a stiff hat gets knocked off every time someone hugs her. Wear cardigans under the dresses if the night turns cool.
12. Matching Black Cat Costume

Matching black cats are quick to put together and comfortable for a full evening. Mom wears a black turtleneck, faux-leather leggings or a midi skirt, black ankle boots and a fitted tail fixed at the waistband, with a cat-ear headband, winged eyeliner, whiskers and a small black nose. Her daughter wears a soft black sweatshirt dress, black leggings, sneakers, matching ears and a flexible fabric tail, with washable whiskers and a purple collar or bow for color. Black gloves with felt paw pads are a cute extra. Faux-leather leggings can feel clammy on a long walk, so I'd only choose them for Mom on a cool night. Reflective trim on the tails or shoes keeps you both visible in the dark.
13. Sun And Moon Costume

Sun and moon gives you a celestial pair without identical clothes. Mom is the moon in a silver or navy maxi dress, a glittering cape, silver flats and a crescent headpiece, with cool-toned eye makeup, tiny silver stars at the temples and a glowing orb or lantern. Her daughter is the sun in a yellow tulle dress, gold leggings and metallic sneakers, with a soft headband of felt sun rays, warm gold shimmer and a small star-shaped purse. Use battery lights, never candles. I cut the sun rays from stiffened felt and keep them short, because longer rays droop by the second hour and poke whoever stands next to her. Repeating silver and gold metallics across both outfits links two different color palettes.
14. Rainbow And Rain Cloud Costume

Rainbow and rain cloud turns the forecast into an easy pair. The daughter is a rainbow in a striped tulle skirt, a white top, rainbow suspenders, colorful hair clips and white sneakers, with bright cheek dots and a small sun-shaped bag. Mom wears a gray sweatshirt dress, or a gray top with leggings, silver rain boots and a cloud headpiece of light polyester filling, with blue felt raindrops on short threads at the hem or on an umbrella so they can't tangle. Silver eye shimmer and a pale blue scarf finish the cloud. Both looks take warm base layers in unpredictable fall weather. The clear umbrella is my favorite part: if it really rains, it keeps her dry and keeps the rainbow on show.
15. Bee And Beekeeper Costume

Bee and beekeeper is easy to make at home and even easier to wear. The daughter wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black leggings, yellow sneakers and a soft tulle skirt, with translucent wings, an antenna headband, rosy cheeks and a small flower bucket for candy. Mom wears white or beige coveralls, comfortable boots, work gloves and a wide-brim hat fitted with light mesh kept clear of her face, with a few felt bees on her sleeves and a clean wooden honey dipper or a small bucket with a honeycomb label. I hang the wings on elastic loops over the shoulders, sized so they sit flat between the shoulder blades and pass through a doorway. Striped knits are easy to find secondhand.
16. Butterfly And Gardener Costume

A butterfly next to a flower-loving gardener is a colorful pair with very little sewing. The daughter wears a bright leotard or long-sleeve top with a tulle skirt, leggings and colorful sneakers, with large fabric wings, curled antennae, a little face shimmer and flower clips in her hair. Mom wears denim overalls over a plaid shirt, a straw sun hat, gardening gloves and waterproof ankle boots, with artificial flowers in the pockets and a light watering can that doubles as a candy container. Big wings look wonderful in pictures and less so in a crowd. I add a wrist loop at each wing tip, so she can open them for photos and let them hang close to her back while walking. Mom can slip a thermal under the plaid.
17. Mary Poppins And Jane Banks Costume

Mary Poppins and Jane Banks is a polished pair with a vintage feel. Mom wears a white blouse, a long navy skirt, a fitted black coat, a red bow tie, black ankle boots and a flower-trimmed hat, with a neat bun, rosy makeup and a closed black umbrella or a carpet-style bag. Her daughter is Jane in a pale blue or white Victorian-inspired dress, white tights, black Mary Janes and a ribbon in soft curls, with a small toy kite or a vintage-style book. Keep both skirts clear of the ground. I'd look for Mom's coat and skirt secondhand in wool, which holds a crisp shape and is properly warm for an outdoor parade, with undershirts underneath if needed.
18. Dorothy And Glinda Costume

Dorothy and Glinda set gingham against sparkling pink. The daughter wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white blouse, white socks and glittery red flats, with two braids tied in blue ribbon, rosy cheeks and a small wicker basket holding a plush dog. Mom wears a blush pink or pale rose gown with a sheer cape, silver flats and a tall glittering crown, with soft curls, pink makeup and a star wand; a tea-length tulle dress works if a long gown isn't practical. Glitter shoes shed, so I give hers a light coat of clear sealant spray a couple of days ahead and let it dry fully. The contrast in shapes looks great on camera, and sparkle on both pairs of shoes links the two.
19. Tinker Bell And Peter Pan Costume

Tinker Bell and Peter Pan share one color, green, in two very different shapes. The daughter wears a green petal-hem dress, opaque tights, green ballet flats and soft fairy wings, with a high bun, a green ribbon and a touch of gold cheek shimmer. Mom is Peter Pan in a green tunic, brown leggings, flat brown boots and a pointed felt cap, with a short green cape, a brown belt and a drawstring pouch instead of a sword or dagger. If your daughter wants the adventurous role, just swap. A petal hem is easy in felt or fleece, which don't fray, so I cut the points straight into the hem and skip finishing it. Stretch fabrics and secure accessories keep both comfortable on the walk.
20. Princess Leia And Rey Costume

Princess Leia and Rey is the pair I'd offer an older daughter who has outgrown frills but still wants to match Mom. Mom wears a long white tunic dress, white leggings, a silver belt and flat white boots, with Leia's side buns and clean, natural makeup. Her daughter is Rey in a cream wrap top, cropped beige pants or leggings, arm wraps and brown ankle boots, with three stacked buns and a tan crossbody pouch. Both can carry small glowing lanterns instead of battle props. For Leia's buns, I braid each side first and coil the braid, which holds far longer than a twisted bun and needs fewer pins. Light knits make both costumes easy to layer.
21. Cookie Monster And Cookie Costume

Cookie Monster and a cookie is funny, warm and soft. Mom wears a bright blue sweatshirt, blue joggers or a tulle skirt, blue sneakers and a headband with oversized white eyes, with blue temporary hair color, simple blue eye shadow and a round cookie-shaped bag. Her daughter is a chocolate chip cookie in a tan sweatshirt dress with brown felt chips, brown leggings, tan sneakers and a cookie headband, with rosy cheeks and tiny brown face dots. Swap the roles for a little one who loves fuzzy outfits. I make the big eyes from two halved foam balls painted white with felt pupils; they're light enough that the headband doesn't slide forward. Fleece and felt keep everything flexible and washable.
22. Ice Cream Cone And Ice Cream Server Costume

An ice cream cone and her server make a sweet-shop pair from simple clothes and craft supplies. The daughter wears a pastel pink or mint dress covered in felt sprinkles, white tights and matching sneakers, with a cone-shaped headband, curls, a little cheek shimmer and a cherry-shaped purse. Mom wears a striped blouse, a pastel apron, white pants and nonslip white sneakers, with a paper soda-shop hat, red lipstick, an empty serving tray and light felt cones on the apron. The cone headband is the part to get right: I build it on a wide, fabric-covered band and keep the cone short, since a tall cone on a thin band tips sideways within minutes. It's a cheerful pick for school festivals and indoor events.
23. Peanut Butter And Jelly Costume

Peanut butter and jelly is a quick last-minute pair with a sweet message. Mom wears a tan sweatshirt and matching pants with a large peanut butter jar label painted or printed on the front, tan sneakers, a brown beanie, natural makeup and a light foam bread slice carried like a handbag. Her daughter wears a purple or red sweatshirt dress with a jelly label, coordinating leggings and colorful sneakers, with matching hair bows and berry cheek dots. Decide who's who by favorite color. I cut the labels from felt and attach them with a few big tacking stitches, so both sweatshirts are back to normal in five minutes come November. Soft sweats keep you both warm for a long evening.
24. Popcorn And Movie Usher Costume

Popcorn and a movie usher bring a bit of movie night to Halloween. The daughter wears a white sweatshirt dress with red vertical stripes, white leggings and red sneakers, with soft yellow and white fabric puffs around the neckline, a red bow, rosy makeup and a ticket-shaped candy bag. Mom wears black trousers, a white button-down, a burgundy vest, a bow tie and black loafers, with a pillbox-style hat, a gold name badge, a flashlight and a roll of paper tickets. I make the popcorn from scrunched scraps of fleece stitched in clusters, and keep them on the shoulders rather than up by her chin. Jackets can go under or over both costumes, and Mom's flashlight is genuinely useful on the walk home.
25. Scarecrow And Pumpkin Costume

Scarecrow and pumpkin suit an outdoor event in warm fall colors. Mom wears denim overalls over a plaid flannel, brown ankle boots, a floppy straw hat and gardening gloves, with braids, rosy cheeks, stitched lines drawn around the smile in washable makeup and fabric patches on the knees and elbows. Her daughter wears an orange sweatshirt dress or pumpkin tunic, green leggings and brown sneakers, with a green leaf collar, a soft stem headband, warm orange shimmer and a leaf-trimmed bucket. Straw hats tend to unravel at the edge; I run a strip of fabric tape around the inside of the brim to hold it together. Thermal layers fit under both, and the earthy colors suit leaves and pumpkins.
26. Ghostbusters And Stay Puft Costume

A ghost catcher and a puffy marshmallow sailor is funny and very recognizable. Mom wears tan coveralls with homemade patches, a utility belt, sturdy black boots and a low ponytail, with light gray smudges on her cheeks and a cardboard equipment pack on flexible straps; leave out anything weapon-shaped. Her daughter wears an all-white sweatshirt with a padded skirt or white joggers, white sneakers, a blue sailor collar, a red neckerchief, white gloves and a soft round hat with a blue band, plus rosy cheeks. Use pillow stuffing sparingly so she can sit, walk and use the restroom easily. For Mom's pack, I fix the cardboard onto an old backpack instead of making straps from scratch, and let its padded straps do the carrying.
27. Minnie And Daisy Costume

Minnie and Daisy is a cheerful pair in red, pink and purple. Mom wears a red polka-dot dress, black tights, yellow flats, white gloves and a round-ear headband with a red bow, with a smooth bun under the ears, red lipstick and a small black nose. Her daughter wears a lavender top, a white or purple tulle skirt, pink tights and matching sneakers, with white gloves, a lavender bow and a soft duck-bill visor instead of a full face covering, plus rosy cheeks and long painted lashes at the outer corners. I set the bill on a visor so it sits above her eyes and tips up out of the way when she eats a treat. Polka dots and matching gloves connect the two, while each of you wears a favorite color.
28. Jessie And Bo Peep Costume

Jessie and Bo Peep mix Western details with soft pastels. Mom is Jessie in a white Western-style shirt with yellow panels, blue jeans, cow-print cuffs, brown boots and a bright red hat, with a long braid, freckles and a coiled rope made from soft yarn. Her daughter is Bo Peep in a pale pink or blue dress with bloomers or leggings, comfortable flats and a coordinating cape, with a large hair bow, rosy makeup and a light shepherd's crook made from foam tubing. Reverse the roles if you like. Foam tubing alone straightens out over an evening, so I slide a thin dowel or a bent length of wire inside and tape the ends so nothing pokes through. Keep her hem high enough for steps.
29. Rapunzel And Mother Gothel Costume

Rapunzel and Mother Gothel is a dramatic fairy-tale pair in purple and burgundy. The daughter wears a purple dress with puff sleeves, ribbon trim and a full ankle-length skirt, purple flats, a long golden braid decorated with artificial flowers and soft pink shimmer, with a tiny plush chameleon on her shoulder. Mom wears a burgundy maxi dress with wide sleeves, a dark belt and black ankle boots, with big dark curls, defined brows, berry lipstick and a small mirror framed in gold-painted cardboard. A long braid gets heavy fast, so I make hers from yellow yarn, which weighs very little, and pin it along her shoulder so it can't drag or tangle while she walks.
30. Ringmaster And Circus Lion Costume

The list ends with a ringmaster and her friendly circus lion. Mom wears a red tailcoat over a white blouse, black pants, knee-high black boots and a small black top hat, with gold trim, a red lip and white gloves, and carries a rolled paper program or a light gold hoop instead of a whip. Her daughter wears a tan sweatshirt and leggings with a soft faux-fur mane, rounded ears, a tail and brown sneakers, with a small nose, whiskers and warm golden shading in child-safe face paint. A red bow tie links her to Mom's uniform. If you can't find a tailcoat, I'd take a fitted red blazer and add gold ribbon down the front and around the cuffs; from a few feet away nobody looks for the tails.
Red, Blonde or Blue Hair Without Dyeing
A lot of these characters hang on the hair: Ariel's red, Leia's buns, Rapunzel's braid, the Fairy Godmother's white. You rarely need anything permanent.
- Temporary color sprays give strong color for one night. Spray outdoors over a towel, let it dry fully before anything goes on top, and expect a little to rub onto collars and pillowcases. It washes out the next morning.
- Synthetic wigs are the quickest route to white, platinum or a two-tone look. Most can't take heat from curling irons or hair dryers, so I style them cold and brush them with a wide-tooth comb from the ends up.
- A wig cap makes a wig sit flat and stops a child's own hair poking out at the nape. On a young child, a wig often lasts about as long as the photos, so keep a ribbon or headband in your bag as plan B.
- Yarn braids and yarn manes weigh far less than wig fiber and take hair clips well, which makes them the better choice for a daughter who'll wear them all evening.
Get the Photo Before the Candy Run
Take the pictures at home, right after dressing, while wigs are straight, makeup is fresh and nobody is tired. I stand the pair by a window or outside in daylight if you can manage it, with the taller person slightly behind so both faces fit easily in one frame. Have the props in hand for these shots, then tuck them into a bag. Once you're out the door, the costumes are for walking, not posing.
Two Characters Who Belong in One Story
The mother-daughter costumes that work best are the ones that still feel good at the end of the night. Start with a theme your daughter is genuinely excited about, then adjust for her age, the weather and the event. Closet basics cover witches, cats, food pairs and many storybook characters, while felt, tulle, headbands and washable makeup add the personality. Flat shoes, warm base layers, flexible props and accessories that leave vision and movement clear matter most. Let both costumes say something about the two of you. Matching animals, contrasting characters or a clever homemade pair, it's the dressing up together that makes the photos, the parties and the trick-or-treating memorable.
