Anime characters are drawn with a few loud details, and a good costume copies those details rather than every seam. Get the hair colour, the silhouette and one signature accessory right, and people will name the character from across the room. These thirty looks for women run from magical girls and idols to villains, school uniforms and fantasy travellers. Most can be built from thrifted clothes, a wig and a bit of craft foam. I've pointed out where to add warmth, coverage or better shoes, because a costume you can't sit or walk in doesn't last the night.

The Wig Carries Most of the Character
In anime, hair colour is often the first thing that tells characters apart, so it's where I put my budget and my prep time. A mid-priced wig that has been brushed, trimmed and pinned properly looks better than an expensive one taken straight out of the bag.
- Check the fibre. Heat-resistant synthetic can take a flat iron or curler on a low setting; standard synthetic will melt or frizz. If the label doesn't say, keep heat away from it.
- Shake it out and brush from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb before the first wear. New wigs shed loose fibres, and it's better they come out at home than at the party.
- Trim bangs a little at a time while the wig is on your head, cutting into the ends with the scissors pointed up. Straight-across cuts look blunt and fake.
- Flatten your own hair into pin curls or a low braid wrapped tight to the head, then wear a wig cap. A bumpy base makes the wig sit high.
- Anchor the wig with four bobby pins through the wig cap at the front, sides and nape. Clips sewn in at the factory rarely hold for a whole evening.
- Pastel and very light wigs show tangles and makeup stains first. Keep foundation off the hairline, and store the wig on a stand or in a hairnet between wears.
1. Sailor Moon Halloween Costume

Sailor Moon is all about the hair, so I buy the wig first and build everything else around it. A long blonde wig, twisted into high buns with the pigtails hanging free; pin the buns through the wig cap, not just the fibre, or they sag. Then a white sailor top or bodysuit, a short blue pleated skirt, a blue collar and red bows at the chest and waist. Gold moon details cut from craft foam glue on well. Red knee boots, white elbow gloves, a red choker, and nude tights under the skirt for warmth.
2. Nezuko Kamado Halloween Costume

Nezuko's pink kimono print does the heavy lifting, so you can keep construction simple. A pink printed wrap dress or kimono under a dark brown or black haori, a red-and-white obi-style belt, and white leg wraps over dark socks with flat sandals. The black wig needs orange ends; if yours doesn't have them, a few clip-in orange pieces at the bottom work. Tie the bamboo piece on with ribbon so you can slide it down to eat. A small wooden-look box bag holds your phone better than a full-size prop.
3. Shinobu Kocho Halloween Costume

Shinobu's haori is the costume. Without it she's just a dark uniform. I'd look for a white kimono jacket or a sheer cape and add the butterfly-wing gradient and the mint, pink and black edging with fabric paint. A dark button-front top and loose pants, a white belt, patterned leg wraps and flat sandals sit underneath. The short black wig should fade to purple, finished with a large butterfly clip. Lavender shadow and a berry-pink lip. A butterfly fan stands in for the combat gear.
4. Mitsuri Kanroji Halloween Costume

Mitsuri's wig is the hardest piece on this list to fake, so it's worth spending on one that already has the pink-to-lime-green fade. Braid it into three thick plaits per side before the night; braiding a long wig on your own head is fiddly. A dark uniform top with gold buttons, a pleated skirt or shorts, a white haori and a wide white belt. Green-and-pink striped thigh-highs and flat white sandals. I'd add a white camisole and opaque tights for coverage, and carry a heart-shaped bag.
5. Frieren Halloween Costume

Frieren is quiet and elegant, which suits anyone who wants fantasy without bright colour. A white tunic dress with gold trim over a black-and-white striped long-sleeve top, a short white capelet, a slim brown belt, black leggings and brown ankle boots. The silver-white wig goes into low twin tails. Pointed ear covers need to match your skin tone closely; I hold them against the jaw in daylight before buying. Luminous base, pale pink blush, taupe shadow, a small journal for a spell book, and thermal leggings underneath on a cold night.
6. Maomao Halloween Costume

Maomao suits someone who wants a modest, comfortable costume they can wear for hours. A muted green wrap top, a long dark teal skirt, a red waist sash and a brown apron or short overskirt. The dark green wig goes into two round side buns with loose pieces by the face. Warm neutral makeup and a few freckles carry the expression. The fun is in the apothecary pouch: faux leaves, small paper labels and empty corked bottles. A woven basket bag holds everything else.
7. Momo Ayase Halloween Costume

Momo is a school uniform with attitude, and most of it may already be in your wardrobe. A white button-down, a red tie, a navy pleated skirt and an oversized pink cardigan worn slouchy. A chin-length auburn wig with flipped ends; a round brush on short natural hair also works. The big green earrings are the detail that separates her from any other schoolgirl, so don't skip them. Sharp black liner, peach blush, white crew socks, loafers, a UFO keychain on the bag, and bike shorts under the skirt.
8. Yor Forger Halloween Costume

Yor is the dressiest look here and the one most likely to fail on fit. A long red off-the-shoulder dress with a fitted black bodice, or a black camisole under a red wrap dress if the shoulders won't stay put. I'd use fashion tape along the neckline either way. A long black wig with straight bangs and two face-framing sections, plus the gold rose headband and drop earrings. Red shadow, a precise wing and deep rose lips. Low black boots and a black shawl you can drop indoors.
9. Makima Halloween Costume

Makima comes almost entirely from office clothes: a crisp white shirt tucked into tailored black trousers, a narrow black tie and black loafers or low heels. The copper-red wig carries the character, worn in a loose braid with straight bangs. Pre-braid it, and spray the bangs lightly so they don't separate. Skip coloured contact lenses unless they come from an eye-care professional; warm gold shadow gives a similar effect. Controlled makeup, a muted red lip, a slim folder or clipboard, and a black blazer if it's cold.
10. Power Halloween Costume

Power works without any gore. The personality comes through in how messy the outfit is. A white shirt, black tie and relaxed black trousers, sleeves rolled and one side untucked. A long blonde wig with uneven bangs, and small red horn clips near the crown. Horn clips slip on synthetic hair, so I grip them with a bobby pin underneath. Red liner, strong brows and a big grin for the face. White socks, sneakers, a cat plush or cat bag, and a cropped navy jacket for warmth.
11. Marin Kitagawa Halloween Costume

Marin is a low-effort costume that still looks deliberate, because her personality lives in the accessories. A white short-sleeve blouse, a blue tie and a navy pleated skirt, then a black choker, silver rings, stacked bracelets and small hoops. The long blonde wig with pink-tinted ends is the giveaway; straighten it on low heat only if the label says it's heat-safe. Peach shadow, long lashes and glossy pink lips. Loafers and crew socks, and a tote with fabric swatches and a tape measure as a nod to her sewing hobby.
12. Ai Hoshino Halloween Costume

Ai Hoshino is a stage costume, so volume and sparkle matter more here than anywhere else on the list. A pink, white and purple dress with a fitted bodice and layered skirt, with a short petticoat underneath for lift. A long dark purple wig fading to blue with side-swept bangs, plus star clips. The star eye detail can be a small cosmetic decal near each eye; I'd test the adhesive on your wrist first. White wrist cuffs, knee socks, platform boots, a toy microphone, and a cropped white jacket outdoors.
13. Nami Halloween Costume

Nami can come straight from your closet: a fitted green-and-white striped tee with high-waisted jeans, a brown belt and gold bracelets. A bright orange bob wig with side bangs is the main buy, or washable colour spray on short natural hair. Spray in a ventilated room, and keep it off your collar. Bronze shadow and a coral lip. A rolled paper map tied with blue ribbon and a tan satchel. The blue swirl on the upper arm works as a temporary transfer; ankle boots replace sandals if it's cold.
14. Nico Robin Halloween Costume

Nico Robin is for someone who'd rather look polished than cute. A fitted purple blouse, a long black skirt with a side slit or an A-line shape, a wide belt and a cropped black jacket. The long black wig needs blunt bangs, and purple sunglasses pushed up on the head finish the face. Mauve shadow, sculpted brows and plum lips. Tall boots with a heel you can stand in for hours. An old-looking book or map portfolio is a light prop, and gold hoops with a structured bag finish it.
15. Bulma Halloween Costume

Bulma's early adventure outfit is cheerful, retro and very forgiving to make. A bright pink T-shirt dress or long tunic, a purple neck scarf, and a brown utility belt with small pouches. The short turquoise wig with straight bangs is what makes it her. A painted mint tin makes a convincing capsule case. I'd stitch on a simple handmade name patch rather than copying a logo. Blue liner, pink blush, lavender socks, red high-tops for walking, and white shorts under the tunic.
16. Android 18 Halloween Costume

Android 18 is basically layered streetwear, which makes it one of the warmest anime looks for an October night. A black-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt, a light blue denim vest, a high-waisted denim skirt over opaque black leggings, and a brown belt. The blonde bob with a deep side part is the key; a flat iron on naturally blonde hair works too. Blue shadow and mauve lips keep her expression cool. Knee-high brown boots and small gold hoops. Straight-leg jeans can replace the skirt and leggings if you prefer trousers.
17. Misty Halloween Costume

Misty is the last-minute costume I'd suggest to anyone heading outdoors, because every piece moves and layers. A yellow sleeveless top, or a fitted yellow tee if you want coverage, high-waisted denim shorts with tights underneath, and bright red suspenders. An orange wig in a high side ponytail with a blue elastic. Fresh makeup with freckles and coral balm. White crew socks, red sneakers, and a small red-and-white ball clipped to a belt loop. A yellow backpack holds your things.
18. Jessie Halloween Costume

Jessie's hair is a sculpture, and the trick is building the curve without making the wig heavy. I tuck a strip of flexible foam inside the swept-back section and pin it from below. A fitted white zip-front top with structured shoulders, white high-waisted pants or a knee-length skirt, and a simple homemade red letter patch on the front. A black mock-neck top and black gloves underneath. Purple shadow, a strong wing and berry lips. Black knee boots, green studs, and a round red-and-white bag.
19. Kiki Halloween Costume

Kiki needs almost nothing: a loose navy midi dress with short sleeves, a big red bow, red flats and a tan crossbody satchel. A short black bob with curved ends, or your own dark hair shaped the same way. Soft makeup with rosy cheeks and tinted balm keeps her young. The broom is the one prop worth carrying, but keep it short; a full-length broom in a crowd hits people. A black cat plush peeking out of the satchel, plus a navy cardigan and black tights when the night turns cold.
20. Nana Osaki Halloween Costume

Nana Osaki is my pick for anyone who already dresses dark and doesn't want to look silly. A fitted black tank under a cropped faux-leather jacket, a red plaid skirt over black shorts, and patterned tights. A short black bob with choppy bangs. Smoky gray shadow, heavy liner and deep red lips. Layered silver chains, a studded belt, hoops and stacked bracelets, nothing with sharp spikes. Black lace-up boots you can stand in, a guitar-shaped bag or toy microphone, and a red plaid scarf for warmth.
21. Faye Valentine Halloween Costume

Faye Valentine's outfit is famously skimpy, so I adapt it with layers that keep the colour story intact. A yellow fitted tank over a supportive black camisole, high-waisted yellow shorts, and opaque tights or black leggings underneath. A cropped red jacket and a wide white belt. A shoulder-length purple wig with curled ends and a black headband. Purple shadow, dramatic lashes and brick-red lips. White ankle boots with dark thigh-highs over the tights, and a small silver clutch. Fashion tape at the tank hem stops it riding up.
22. Mikasa Ackerman Halloween Costume

Mikasa reads from three pieces: the short black hair, the deep red scarf and the tan cropped jacket. Get those right and the rest is easy. A white button-down, fitted white or beige pants, a brown belt, and harness straps made from wide elastic, which move with you and don't dig in like real webbing. Natural makeup with straight brows. A small wing patch sewn on the jacket, tall brown lace-up boots and a canvas satchel. I'd leave combat props at home completely.
23. Ochaco Uraraka Halloween Costume

Ochaco's suit is easiest to build on a black unitard or a matching top and leggings. Cut pink panels from stretch fabric, not felt, if you can, because felt doesn't stretch and pulls away when you bend. Rounded wrist cuffs and a neck piece from lightweight foam. A chestnut bob with curved ends and short bangs, pink shadow and round rosy blush. Chunky pink-and-white boots, or white sneakers with removable foam covers. A small hero badge is all the accessory she needs, and a breathable base keeps you comfortable.
24. Tsuyu Asui Halloween Costume

Tsuyu is a sporty build that's comfortable all night, as long as the goggles don't block your view. A forest-green long-sleeve top and leggings with black side panels and tan stripes in fabric tape or stretch appliqués. A long dark green wig tied into a low bow, with short bangs. I'd make the frog-eye headband from soft padded fabric and wear it above the eyes, never over them. Green liner and peach blush. Green gloves, a utility belt, decorated sneakers, and a frog pouch.
25. Himiko Toga Halloween Costume

Toga works as a school-uniform look without any of the darker details. A cream cardigan over a white sailor-collar blouse, a navy pleated skirt and a red neck scarf. Knee-high socks and brown loafers. A messy blonde wig in two small side buns, loose strands pulled out on purpose. Warm yellow shadow, freckles and a wide, friendly smile. The gray collar can be a soft foam tube that sits loosely. A brown school satchel with pins, no sharp or medical props, and bike shorts underneath.
26. Sakura Haruno Halloween Costume

Sakura moves easily, which makes her a good choice for anyone who'll be on their feet. A sleeveless red tunic with white trim over black fitted shorts or capri leggings, a pale belt, black gloves and soft fabric elbow guards. A short pastel-pink wig with side bangs; pastel wigs show every tangle, so brush it out gently from the ends up before each wear. A dark blue headband on the head or around the neck, a small diamond mark on the forehead, open-toe boot covers over black shoes, and a small pouch on the belt.
27. Hinata Hyuga Halloween Costume

Hinata dresses in layers, so this is the most weather-proof costume in the list. A lavender zip hoodie with cream sleeves over a black fitted top, with navy pants or shorts over tights. A straight blue-black bob with blunt bangs that frame the cheeks. Pale lavender shadow suggests her eyes without coloured lenses, which I wouldn't recommend unless they come from an eye-care professional. Gentle blush, thin liner, a dark headband loose around the neck, a small thigh pouch, fingerless gloves and a lavender crossbody.
28. Asuka Langley Halloween Costume

Asuka's plugsuit looks smooth in drawings, and copying that on a real body takes stretch everywhere. A red fitted jumpsuit or long-sleeve top and leggings, with black, green and white panels in stretch fabric or vinyl tape. Vinyl tape lifts at the knees and elbows, so I stop it short of the joints. A long auburn wig with side bangs and two red clips at the temples. Rust shadow and a confident red lip. White gloves, white boots or sneakers in boot sleeves, and a painted foam control pad.
29. Rei Ayanami Halloween Costume

Rei is the plain-white counterpart to Asuka, and white is unforgiving on fit, so start with a smooth base. A white fitted jumpsuit or athletic top and leggings, with blue, black and pale green appliqué panels. A short powder-blue bob with wispy bangs and slightly uneven ends. Red-brown shadow instead of coloured lenses. Pale, simple makeup with soft contour and a muted pink lip. White gloves and white boots or sneakers. Wear skin-tone underwear with no visible lines; under white stretch fabric everything shows.
30. Zero Two Halloween Costume

Zero Two closes the list with the brightest silhouette: a structured red double-breasted dress with white trim and long sleeves, or a red military jacket over a matching skirt. White tights and white knee boots give the crisp contrast. The long pastel-pink wig with straight bangs is essential, and the small red horn clips need to be pinned firmly near the crown. Red winged liner, pink blush and rose lips. A slim white belt, a code-style badge, a red-and-white clutch, fitted shorts underneath and low heels.
Craft Foam, Fabric Tape and Felt on Stretch Suits
Several of these characters wear fitted bodysuits with coloured panels, and a few have small hard pieces like moon brooches, collars or wrist cuffs. These are the materials I'd reach for, and how each one behaves once it's on a moving body.
Thin craft foam
Ordinary 2mm craft foam is fine for flat badges, emblems and moon shapes. It cuts with scissors and takes acrylic paint, though it needs a flexible primer or a coat of glue first or the paint cracks when it bends. For curved pieces like cuffs, thicker EVA foam holds a shape far better. Warm it gently with a heat gun or hairdryer, bend it, and hold it until it cools.
Panels on stretch fabric
- Stretch fabric sewn on with a zigzag stitch moves with the suit and survives sitting down. It is the most durable option.
- Vinyl or fabric tape works for one night, but lifts at knees, elbows and the waist. Stop it a little short of the joints.
- Felt has no stretch. On a bodysuit it puckers and pulls away when you bend, so keep it to areas that don't move, like the chest.
- Hot glue holds foam to foam well, but it peels off stretch fabric and turns brittle in the cold. Use fabric glue or stitches on clothing.
Put the whole suit on and squat, reach and sit before the night. Whatever pops off at home will pop off in front of everyone.
Which Anime Character Fits Your Night
For the easiest night, start with a character whose clothes you already own, like Makima, Nami, Kiki or Android 18. For a bigger moment, Yor, Mitsuri and Ai Hoshino take more effort and pay it back. In every case, settle the wig and the colour story first, then add shoes and one practical prop. A cheap thrifted base with the right hair beats an expensive outfit with the wrong one. Think about how long you'll be standing, how cold it will be, and where you'll put your phone, then pick the character you're most excited to be.
