A night out with friends in fall usually means more than one stop: dinner, maybe a bar or a show, and a cold walk in between. When I plan these outfits, I think about that whole route, not just how the look photographs at the table. The 25 ideas below lean on leather, plaid, velvet, satin and good tailoring, with casual options for dinner, dressier ones for a rooftop and a few made for dancing. Each comes with the shoes, outer layer and accessories I'd put with it. Change the hem, heel or tights to suit your body and your weather; I've noted where that matters most.

Dressing for Dinner, a Bar and the Sidewalk in Between
When a client tells me about a night out, I ask about the route before the outfit. A table at 7, a bar at 9 and maybe a club after means three temperatures and a lot of standing.
- Choose a coat you're happy to carry or check. A long wool coat is warmest, but a cropped leather jacket fits over a chair back and into a crowded booth.
- Pick the heel for the longest stretch of standing, not for the photo. A block heel or a low boot heel is far kinder on a two-hour bar floor.
- Bring a bag big enough for a phone, card, keys, lipstick and a folded pair of flats if you'll be dancing. Anything smaller ends up in a friend's bag.
Then build the outfit around those three answers. It's easier than fixing cold legs or sore feet halfway through the night.
1. Black Mini Dress Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A long-sleeve black mini is the outfit I'd reach for on a night when you don't want to think. Ribbed knit, ponte or stretch crepe all hold their shape for hours, which thin jersey doesn't. Sheer black tights and knee-high leather boots make one long dark line from hem to toe, and an oversized charcoal blazer keeps it from looking too done. Silver hoops, a small shoulder bag and a simple pendant finish it. If minis aren't you, a fitted knee-length dress works with the same accessories. It suits dinner, live music or a lounge.
2. Leather Blazer And Jeans Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Leather blazer and dark jeans is my answer for the casual-but-sharp group plan. A fitted bodysuit or smooth scoop-neck top under it keeps the base clean, and straight or wide-leg denim keeps it relaxed. Black, chocolate or deep burgundy leather brings the season in. Pointed ankle boots add height; sleek sneakers dress it down if you'll walk a lot. Carry a structured mini bag with medium earrings. Real leather blazers are stiff for the first few wears and soften at the elbows, so wear one around the house a bit before the night out.
3. Satin Midi Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Satin midi skirts move every time you do, which is half the appeal. Champagne, bronze, chocolate or black all work, with a fitted mock-neck on top to balance the fluid skirt. A cropped suede jacket adds texture and enough warmth for early fall. Pointed slingbacks for a dressier spot, heeled ankle boots when it's colder. Keep the bag and necklaces small so they don't compete with the shine. Bias-cut satin clings to the hip and shows every line, so if that bothers you, choose a lined A-line with an elastic back waist instead.
4. Corset Top And Wide-Leg Pants Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A corset top looks great for exactly as long as it stays where it should. I look for wider straps or internal boning, and I'll put a fitted mesh or fine knit top underneath for anyone who wants more coverage. Pair it with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in black, espresso or deep olive, a tailored blazer over the shoulders, and pointed pumps or platforms under the long hem. A metallic clutch and sculptural earrings finish it. The trousers should almost touch the floor in your shoes; any shorter and the wide leg looks cropped. Wear it for dancing.
5. Sweater Dress And Tall Boots Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Sweater dresses are warm, but knit adds bulk, so the waist needs some definition. Choose midi or above-the-knee length in burgundy, charcoal, forest green or camel, and wear it with tall boots that close the gap to the hem. A long wool coat ending near the dress hem looks cleaner than a short jacket. A belt is optional if the dress already follows your shape. Add a structured shoulder bag, gold earrings, slim bracelets and opaque tights on cold nights. Wool knits pill where the bag strap rubs, so I'd carry a clutch or a short-handle bag.
6. Denim Mini Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A dark denim mini feels playful, and an oversized blazer is what gives the short hem some structure. Wear it with a fitted long-sleeve top or thin turtleneck in cream, burgundy or black, and knee-high boots, which look more like fall than bare legs. Sheer or semi-opaque tights go underneath on colder nights. A small crossbody frees your hands, and bold earrings bring the eye up. A-line skirts give more room through the hips; a straight denim mini fits closer. I'd wear it to a comedy show or a night with several stops.
7. Sequin Top And Black Pants Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A sequin top gives you all the sparkle you need, and black tailored trousers keep it grown up. Straight legs feel classic; wide legs move more on a dance floor. Add a black blazer or cropped faux-fur jacket for warmth, then pointed heels, a satin clutch and studs. Check the inside of the armholes before buying, because unlined sequins rub raw spots under the arm by midnight. If full sequins feel like too much, a shimmer knit gets you halfway. It's a good birthday dinner outfit and much easier to wear than sparkle head to toe.
8. Burgundy Jumpsuit Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Burgundy looks richer than black under warm bar lighting, and a jumpsuit makes the whole outfit in one move. Choose a defined waist, a comfortable rise and straight or wide legs, with a wrap bodice or square neck. A cropped black leather jacket keeps the waist visible. Pointed ankle boots or block-heel pumps, depending on the trouser length, plus a black clutch, gold earrings and a slim bracelet. Petite women may want a tapered leg or a hem taken up; tall women can go full sweep. One practical note: jumpsuits mean undressing fully in the restroom, so pick one with an easy zip.
9. Plaid Mini Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Plaid in brown, charcoal, navy or burgundy reads as autumn straight away. With a mini skirt, I keep everything else solid: a fitted black turtleneck, semi-opaque tights and tall black boots. A cropped wool jacket or tailored peacoat adds structure without covering the skirt. Simple shoulder bag, small hoops or drops. If you want a longer hem, a knee-length plaid wrap skirt does the same job. Don't add a second pattern. I'd pick this for a casual restaurant, a bookstore event or a quiet night with close friends.
10. Slip Dress And Leather Jacket Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

On its own a satin slip dress is a summer dress; a heavy leather jacket makes it fall. I like a midi in copper, olive, navy, chocolate or black, with a cropped jacket that ends at the waist so the long dress doesn't look weighed down. Heeled ankle boots for evening, knee-highs when it's colder. A small clutch, layered chains and small earrings add shine. For more coverage, put a thin fitted turtleneck under the dress or pick wider straps. Satin and leather together give the soft-and-hard contrast that suits dinner or a concert.
11. Faux-Leather Pants Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Faux-leather pants turn a plain top into an evening outfit with almost no effort. Straight, slim or wide leg, whichever suits you. A soft draped blouse in ivory, burgundy or deep green balances the stiff texture, and a tailored wool coat, pointed pumps or heeled ankle boots finish it, with a chain-strap bag and metal earrings. Most faux leather is coated polyester that doesn't breathe, so I look for a brushed or knit backing and a stretchy waistband; otherwise you'll be sticky by the second bar. For less shine, choose a matte coated fabric.
12. Blazer Dress Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A blazer dress is tailoring and a dress in one piece, which is handy when you're getting ready in a hurry. Double-breasted or wrap front, in black, navy, charcoal or brown. Short versions ride up when you sit, so I'd wear tailored shorts underneath or size up the length. Sheer tights and sleek knee boots keep it fall-ready; a structured mini bag and statement earrings bring the evening in. Add a slim belt for more shape, or wear a longer one over fitted trousers for coverage. A wool coat on cold nights.
13. Mesh Top And Midi Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

With mesh, you decide how much shows. Layer a black, printed or shimmery mesh top over a fitted cami or bodysuit, or choose mesh sleeves with a solid body if you want an easy bra fit. A high-waisted leather or satin midi skirt balances the sheer top, and heeled boots keep it grounded for fall. A cropped blazer adds warmth without hiding the mesh. Keep the bag small and the earrings simple. Pick a skirt with a back slit for walking. Mesh snags on rings and bag chains, so check your jewelry. Wear it to a show, dinner or dancing.
14. Monochrome Brown Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

An all-brown outfit is warmer and softer than all black, and it's my go-to for a client who's tired of black. Start with a fitted brown knit and chocolate high-waisted trousers or a midi skirt, then a dark brown leather jacket and espresso suede pointed boots. A tan structured bag, gold jewelry and a belt that matches the shoes finish it. The shades don't need to match exactly; slight differences keep it from going flat. Mix ribbed knit, suede and smooth leather for depth. Suede spots in rain, so check the forecast.
15. Graphic Tee And Leather Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A graphic tee with a black leather midi skirt is a high-low mix that I see work at concerts every season. Tuck a fitted or slightly oversized tee into a skirt with a slit, then add a charcoal, burgundy or dark plaid blazer to give the casual top some structure. Heeled ankle boots and a chain-strap bag bring it into the evening; hoops and stacked rings keep it light. Roll the tee sleeves once to make oversized look deliberate. Prefer something softer? Coated denim or stretch faux leather works in place of the leather skirt.
16. Off-Shoulder Top And Jeans Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Off-shoulder tops look easy and take some planning. A long-sleeve knit version in black, cream, red or deep plum gives warmth, and a strapless or convertible bra that fits snugly is what keeps the neckline clean. Pair it with high-rise dark jeans, straight or slightly flared, and pointed heels. A cropped leather jacket goes on between stops without spoiling the shape, with a small shoulder bag, statement earrings and a fine bracelet. If you find yourself tugging it up all night, a one-shoulder knit gives the same effect with half the fuss.
17. Velvet Mini Dress Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Velvet catches low light softly, which is why it looks so good at a dinner table. Choose a long-sleeve or square-neck mini in black, emerald, navy or burgundy, with sheer tights and block-heel ankle boots you can stand in. A tailored wool coat keeps you warm without competing. Carry a small satin or metallic bag, add drop earrings and one bold ring. An A-line velvet dress gives more room if you dislike close fits. Make sure it's lined, since unlined stretch velvet clings to tights. Good for birthdays, the theater or a holiday party.
18. Cropped Cardigan And Midi Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A cropped cardigan can work as a top on its own. Button it all the way, or leave the top buttons open over a smooth cami. Solid cream, black, cherry red or soft gray works over a printed, pleated or satin midi. Heeled knee-high boots go under the longer hem. A small top-handle bag and pearl or metal earrings finish it. The cardigan should meet the waistband, so stand in front of a mirror and raise your arms to check how much shows. A longer cardigan can be lightly front-tucked instead. It suits a museum night or a quieter dinner.
19. Tailored Vest And Trousers Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A vest and trouser set gives you sharp lines without a dress or a full suit. Choose a fitted vest with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in black, charcoal, navy or pinstripe. Wear the vest alone if it closes securely, or put a sheer long-sleeve top underneath for warmth. A long tailored coat keeps the line clean outside, with pointed pumps or heeled boots, a small clutch and bold earrings. The trousers should skim the floor and still show the shoe tip. If you have a fuller bust, a longer vest with buttons placed lower on the chest fits more smoothly.
20. Knit Top And Leopard Pants Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

I treat leopard as a neutral, and leopard pants prove it: they go with almost every fall color you own. Pair straight or wide legs with a fitted black knit top, then a cropped black blazer or leather jacket so the print stays visible. Black pointed boots or pumps and a plain shoulder bag, with no second pattern. Gold hoops and a slim cuff finish it. If high-contrast leopard feels loud, go for a muted brown version. Fit through the hips matters with print; any pulling distorts the spots and shows straight away.
21. Denim Jumpsuit Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A denim jumpsuit can tip into workwear quickly, so the fit has to be sharp: a defined waist, full-length legs and a shoulder seam that sits on your shoulder. Roll the sleeves a little, or open the neckline over a simple cami. A statement belt shapes it, with black or burgundy heeled ankle boots, a structured mini bag and metallic earrings. A long camel coat goes over it when it's cold. Dark, even washes look dressier than distressed ones. It's comfortable enough for a night with lots of walking.
22. Red Top And Black Mini Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

Red and black is one of the simplest formulas I know, and it always photographs well. Pick a fitted long-sleeve knit, draped blouse or square-neck bodysuit in cherry, crimson or burgundy red, then a black A-line mini, sheer tights and tall black boots. A cropped black jacket keeps the waist visible. Add a small black bag, silver or gold earrings and a red lip if you like matching. Don't add another color. For more coverage, a knee-length skirt keeps the same formula. Hold reds up to your face in daylight; blue-reds and orange-reds suit different people.
23. White Shirt And Leather Midi Skirt Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A white shirt and black leather midi works at any age, which is why I suggest it so often. Tuck the shirt in, open the collar a little and push up the sleeves. A fitted shirt looks crisp; an oversized one gives softer volume. Knee-high boots or pointed pumps depending on the skirt length and weather, and a long black coat on top. A structured bag, bold earrings and a slim belt if the waistband has loops. Choose a skirt with a slit or stretch panel. White shirts show every drop of red wine, so keep a stain pen in the bag.
24. Knit Dress And Moto Jacket Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

This is the comfort pick: a soft knit dress with a moto jacket. A fitted midi gives a sleek base, while a ribbed one is more relaxed. Black, charcoal, olive or rust, with a cropped leather moto on top and heeled ankle boots. A crossbody with metal hardware and medium hoops echo the jacket's zips. If the dress is sleeveless, the jacket handles outdoors and you'll be comfortable inside. A side slit keeps the long dress from limiting your step. It suits casual restaurants, outdoor events and music venues.
25. Metallic Top And Dark Jeans Fall Girls Night Out Outfit

A metallic top is the fastest way to make dark jeans feel like a night out. Silver, bronze, pewter or soft gold in a draped blouse, fitted knit or sleeveless shell, with high-rise black or indigo straight jeans. A tailored black blazer and pointed ankle boots finish it, plus a small black satin or leather bag. Stick to small hoops or studs. For coverage, layer a sleeveless top over a sheer black long-sleeve. Lame and foil fabrics crease sharply and don't bounce back, so hang it up as soon as you get home.
Tights Do More Work Than a Heavier Coat
Almost half the outfits above use minis, midis or dresses, and in fall the tights decide whether you'll be comfortable. Tights are sold by denier, a measure of yarn thickness, and the number tells you a lot.
- Around 10 to 20 denier: sheer, very little warmth. Good for early fall and indoor parties.
- Around 30 to 40 denier: semi-opaque, a soft shadow of skin, noticeably warmer. My default for most of these looks.
- 50 denier and up: opaque. Warm, and they make a mini skirt feel much less exposed.
- Fleece-lined: for genuinely cold nights. They look like opaques from a distance.
Match black tights to black boots and the leg reads as one long line, which is why so many of these looks use that pairing. Sheer tights ladder easily, so I keep a spare pair in my bag.
Wiping Down Leather and Vinyl the Next Morning
A night out is rough on leather jackets, faux-leather pants and suede boots. Real leather can be wiped with a barely damp cloth and left to dry away from a radiator; heat dries it out and makes it crack. Faux leather is a coated fabric, so check the label before it goes near the washing machine, and never tumble dry it, because heat peels the coating. If suede gets wet, let it dry naturally, then brush the nap back up with a suede brush.
Plan for the Walk Home, Too
The right outfit for a night out is the one you forget you're wearing by 11 p.m. Start from a shape you already like, then add the season through leather, velvet, satin, plaid, deep color or a good coat. Before you leave, think about the temperature, how far you'll walk, the venue and how long you'll stand. Every look here adapts with a lower heel, a longer hem, warmer tights or another layer. Wear what feels like you, not a trend that doesn't fit how you live.
