Greece in autumn is a packing puzzle: hot afternoons, cool evenings, wind on the ferry decks and a lot of walking on polished marble and cobbles. I plan these trips around light layers and shoes that have already been broken in, then let a few good accessories handle the dressing up. September often still feels like summer, October swings more between warm days and cool nights, and by November you'll want a proper jacket and closed shoes. A small capsule of breathable shirts, a midi dress or two, tailored pants, light knits and one weather-ready jacket covers most of it without a huge suitcase. The fifteen outfits below cover Athens, Santorini, Crete, Corfu and the places in between.

September, October and November Pack Very Differently
"Fall in Greece" covers three quite different months, and the region matters almost as much as the date. These are the rough patterns I pack around. Always check the forecast for your own dates, because a warm or wet week can shift everything.
- September: still summer for most purposes. Athens afternoons are often around the high 20s Celsius (low to mid 80s Fahrenheit), the sea is warm and rain is rare. Pack linen, sandals and one light layer for evenings and ferries.
- October: warm days, noticeably cooler nights and the first real rain, especially in the west. Expect highs closer to the mid 20s Celsius (mid 70s Fahrenheit) in Athens. Add a light jacket, a knit and closed shoes alongside your summer pieces.
- November: cooler, cloudier and wetter, with highs often around the high teens Celsius (mid 60s Fahrenheit). Swap sandals for ankle boots or leather sneakers, and bring a proper jacket and an umbrella.
Crete and the southern islands usually stay warmer for longer, Corfu and the Ionian side get more rain, and inland or mountain areas like Meteora are cooler than the coast. A trip that combines Athens with an island and somewhere inland needs a wider range of layers than a week on one beach.
1. Athens Fall Walking Outfit

Athens is a walking city, and the pavements and ancient sites are uneven and often slippery marble, so I build this outfit up from the shoes. Supportive white leather sneakers with a grippy sole come first. A fitted white cotton tee and straight-leg ankle pants in olive, camel or navy keep it neat, and ankle length stops the hems collecting dust on unpaved paths. A light beige utility jacket ties around the waist once the afternoon warms up. Carry a secure zip crossbody in busy areas, and add sunglasses, small gold earrings and a thin scarf. Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics where you can, since they still look fresh after a full day and pack flat in a carry-on.
2. Greek Island Fall Linen Outfit

Linen is my first choice for the islands in early fall, when afternoons are still bright and warm. A relaxed blue-and-white striped linen shirt with high-waisted cream trousers and flat leather sandals keeps you cool and looks right against white walls. Linen creases the moment you sit, and I tell people to accept that rather than fight it; a heavier linen or linen-cotton blend creases more softly. Roll the sleeves by day and throw a light knit over your shoulders when the breeze picks up. A woven crossbody, hoops and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it. Later in the season, swap the sandals for loafers or clean sneakers. The loose shirt works on most builds, since you can full-tuck, front-tuck or leave it out.
3. Santorini Fall Midi Dress Outfit

Santorini's white walls make a strong color stand out, which is why I pack one flowing midi for it in cobalt, terracotta, soft yellow or a small print. Look for short or three-quarter sleeves, a defined waist and enough swing in the skirt for the island's endless steps. Hemlines that are too narrow make stairs awkward, and the caldera wind lifts very light fabrics, so a slightly weightier crepe or cotton behaves better than chiffon. A cropped denim jacket or light cardigan covers cool evenings. Low block-heel sandals are far steadier on worn steps than slim heels, and a small structured shoulder bag polishes it. Later in fall, add sheer tights and ankle boots.
4. Acropolis Fall Sightseeing Outfit

The Acropolis is mostly exposed rock and worn marble, with little shade and a fair climb, so this outfit is about sun, grip and room to move. A breathable black or white tank goes under a light button-down worn open, which you can close over your shoulders when the sun gets strong. Loose tan cargo pants let you take big steps without looking like hiking gear. Cushioned walking sneakers with real tread matter more here than anywhere else on the trip, because the marble has been polished smooth by centuries of feet and gets slick. A compact backpack holds water, sunscreen and a spare layer. Add a cap or packable sun hat, studs and UV sunglasses, and keep it neutral so every piece gets reworn.
5. Greece Fall Ferry Outfit

Ferry decks are windier than any street, and cabins can be chilly with air conditioning, so this outfit is built in layers. Start with a soft crewneck tee and dark straight-leg jeans or ponte pants, then a striped sweater and a light water-resistant jacket in navy, stone or khaki. Salt spray reaches the open deck, so I wouldn't wear anything delicate up there. Slip-on sneakers make boarding with luggage easier, and socks keep your feet warm inside. A zip tote holds documents, a scarf, water and small things securely. Tie your hair in a low ponytail or claw clip, since the wind will undo anything looser. Every piece reworks with dresses and trousers later in the trip.
6. Greece Fall Beach Day Outfit

Early fall water is often still warm enough to swim in, but the beach outfit needs more coverage than in midsummer, because you'll probably head into town after. A one-piece swimsuit goes under a loose white linen shirt and pull-on wide-leg pants in blue, sand or soft green. Flat waterproof sandals handle pebbles and wet rocks, which many Greek beaches have instead of sand; pack light sneakers if you're walking around town later. A roomy woven tote, a wide-brim hat, sunglasses and a bright scarf complete it. Button the shirt for lunch, and add a fine-knit cardigan if the afternoon cools off.
7. Athens Fall Museum Outfit

A museum day means hours on hard floors, a lot of standing and some sitting in cafés, so the outfit can be smart as long as the shoes are kind. A fine-knit short-sleeve sweater with pleated midi trousers is my choice. The pleats give room through the hip, and a fluid fabric doesn't crease badly after a long sit. Wear sleek leather sneakers or cushioned loafers, and put a light trench over the top. A medium crossbody keeps your hands free. Black, camel, ivory and burgundy make a calm fall palette, with small hoops, a simple watch and a silk scarf. Check the waistband too, since a relaxed or partly elastic one is much nicer after lunch. It carries straight on to coffee or an early dinner.
8. Greece Fall Taverna Dinner Outfit

Tavernas are relaxed places, so aim for something nice rather than formal. A satin midi skirt with a fitted knit top gives you texture and shape without trying too hard. Satin water-spots, so I'd keep it away from the beach day and wear it in the evening only. A cropped cardigan or tailored blazer covers the drop after sunset, especially at waterfront tables. Low block heels, dressy flats or polished ankle boots cope with cobbled streets better than stilettos, which catch in the gaps. Rust, chocolate, navy or deep green knits look rich against a neutral skirt. Tuck the knit and add a slim belt for more waist, and finish with gold earrings, a bracelet, a compact shoulder bag and a light wrap.
9. Meteora Fall Hiking Outfit

Meteora is inland and higher up, so it's often cooler and damper than the coast, and the trails and monastery steps are steep. This outfit is the functional one in your suitcase. A moisture-wicking long-sleeve top and stretch hiking pants go under a light fleece or quarter-zip, with a water-resistant shell on top. Trail sneakers or hiking shoes with grippy soles are a must on the paths and rock steps. Breathable socks, a compact backpack, sunglasses and a brimmed cap finish it, in forest green, stone, black and rust. Skip bulky pieces that take half your case. If you plan to go inside the monasteries, pack the wrap skirt I describe further down, since hiking pants won't be enough for women.
10. Corfu Fall Rainy Day Outfit

Corfu is greener than most of Greece because it gets more rain, especially as fall goes on, so outerwear matters more here than elsewhere. A striped long-sleeve top with cropped straight-leg jeans and a light hooded raincoat is my answer. Cropped jeans keep the hems off wet pavement, which matters on the old town's polished stone streets, where low-heeled waterproof ankle boots with textured soles also give you grip. A nylon crossbody keeps belongings drier than an open woven tote, and a compact umbrella helps in a downpour. Choose the raincoat in sage, navy, beige or soft blue so it goes with everything else you packed. Small earrings and a bright scarf lift the neutrals.
11. Crete Fall Sightseeing Outfit

Crete is big, and a single day can include a historic town, a beach and a drive through the hills, so I pack separates that do a bit of everything. A sleeveless knit top and high-waisted wide-leg pants in breathable cotton or a linen blend go under an open chambray shirt. Wide legs need to skim the ground, not drag on it, especially on uneven streets and dusty archaeological sites. Comfortable tan sneakers or supportive leather sandals suit early fall. A structured crossbody, woven belt, sunglasses and a simple pendant finish it. Button the shirt or swap it for a soft cardigan when the evening cools. It looks put together without resorting to activewear.
12. Greece Fall Airport Outfit

My rule for an airport outfit is that it has to earn a place in the trip too. A matching knit set, with relaxed straight-leg pants and a long-sleeve top in charcoal, navy, taupe or cream, is comfortable for hours in a seat. Later, each half goes with jeans, skirts or other tops. Look for a knit with some stretch and recovery, because a slack knit bags at the knees and seat by the time you land. A light trench or oversized blazer adds warmth and shape. Clean sneakers that slip off easily for security, supportive socks and a roomy zip tote make the airport easier. Keep jewelry minimal, and wear a crossbody pouch under the coat for your passport and phone.
13. Greece Fall Market Outfit

At a busy market you want both hands free and everything zipped. A soft long-sleeve Breton top, high-rise mom jeans and a light quilted vest give warmth that comes off fast when the sun breaks through. A zippered crossbody worn in front of the body is the bag I'd choose in a crowd, with a folding canvas tote for whatever you buy. Low-profile sneakers or flat loafers depend on how far you'll walk. Add sunglasses, understated earrings and a patterned scarf. Cuff the jeans once and tuck the front of the top in to show the waist; a quilted vest over an untucked top can look boxy.
14. Greece Fall Evening Outfit

For a cool evening out, I pack one long-sleeve wrap midi dress in burgundy, navy, a dark floral or emerald. A wrap dress adjusts to your shape, packs well and comes back from a crumpled suitcase faster than most dresses, especially in jersey. A light tailored coat or belted cardigan goes over it depending on the temperature. Low block-heel leather ankle boots look seasonal and handle uneven streets. Carry a structured mini bag, with gold earrings and a fine necklace. Keep the coat and boots plain under a busy print; a solid dress can take a patterned scarf or textured bag. It's warm enough for an evening walk and dressy enough for a rooftop restaurant.
15. Greece November City Outfit

By November, mornings, evenings and cloudy days call for a warmer city outfit. I start with a thin thermal or fitted long-sleeve top under a soft wool-blend sweater, then add tailored straight-leg pants and a mid-length trench, wool-blend coat or lined utility jacket. Layers you can remove beat one heavy coat, because sunny afternoons can still warm up and museums are heated. Closed leather sneakers or waterproof ankle boots give warmth and support. A compact umbrella, a medium crossbody, a scarf and simple jewelry finish it. Weather varies a lot by region and week, so check the forecast just before you pack. A neutral palette lets you repeat pieces without repeating outfits.
Covering Up for Monasteries and Churches
Greek Orthodox monasteries and many churches expect modest dress, and this catches a lot of travelers out. At the Meteora monasteries, women are asked to cover their shoulders and wear a skirt below the knee rather than trousers, and men should wear long pants. Wraps are sometimes offered at the entrance, but I'd never rely on that.
- Pack a long, lightweight wrap skirt that ties over hiking pants or shorts in seconds, then rolls into a bag.
- Carry a scarf or thin cardigan big enough to cover your shoulders and upper arms.
- For island churches, a midi dress with sleeves or a shirt over a tank usually covers you without changing your plans.
Packing the Capsule Into One Carry-On
The outfits above are built from a small set of repeating pieces, which is what makes a carry-on realistic. For roughly ten days, I'd pack two pairs of pants plus jeans, three or four tops, a striped shirt, one or two midi dresses, a satin or knit skirt, a light knit and a water-resistant jacket. Wear the bulkiest shoes and the jacket on the plane. Pack walking sneakers, one pair of sandals or ankle boots depending on the month, and one dressier pair at most. Roll knits and jersey, fold linen and anything structured, and leave room for a market purchase or two.
What I'd Zip Into the Suitcase for Greece This Fall
A good autumn wardrobe for Greece rests on breathable basics, layers that come off easily, bags that close and shoes that have already done real miles. Keep everything in one color palette so the dresses, pants, shirts, knits and jackets all mix. Match the packing to the place and the dates, since what feels right on an island in September will be too light for an Athens evening in November. Pack one water-resistant jacket, at least one warm knit and the shoes you've already tested, then let a scarf, earrings or a better bag carry each outfit from sightseeing to dinner.
