Spring asks one outfit to cover a cold morning, a warm afternoon and a breezy evening. That's why I plan the season in formulas instead of single outfits. A formula is a recipe: a base piece, one layer, a shoe and a finishing accessory. Once you know which slots each of your pieces can fill, you stop starting from zero every morning. Most of the 25 spring outfit formulas ahead run on things many closets already hold, like a trench, straight jeans, a midi skirt and a white tee. I've noted for each one what makes it hold together, and where it tends to go wrong.

Writing a Formula From Your Own Closet
When I build a client's spring formulas, I start with the closet, not a shopping list. Pull out everything you wore last spring and sort it into four piles: bases (dresses, jeans, trousers, skirts), tops, layers (jackets, cardigans, open shirts) and shoes. Most people discover they have plenty of bases and only one or two layers they actually like. That gap is usually the only thing worth buying.
- Choose one base and one top that you already wear together often.
- Add the layer that works over it on a cold morning. If none does, that's your gap.
- Pick the shoe you'd walk in all day, then one dressier alternative.
- Write it down as a line, like 'straight jeans, striped tee, trench, flats'.
A formula only counts if you can swap at least one slot without the outfit falling apart. If the trench is the only layer that works, the formula breaks the first warm day.
I also write each formula twice, once for a cold morning and once for a warm afternoon. Usually only the layer and the shoe change. Seeing both versions on paper makes it obvious which pieces carry the season and which ones only work on a single kind of day.
1. White Linen Suit Spring Outfit

A white linen suit is tailoring you can actually wear in warm weather. A relaxed linen blazer and matching wide-leg trousers in ivory or optic white, with a ribbed white tank or cotton cami underneath so nothing adds bulk. Flat leather sandals or open-toe mules keep the line long. Gold hoops, a structured woven tote and slim black sunglasses give it the one dark note it needs. Linen creases, and on white the creases read as gray shadows, so I'd steam it right before leaving and accept that it will soften by lunch. It suits a rooftop brunch, a bridal shower or a creative office on a Friday.
2. Trench Coat And Jeans Spring Outfit

The trench and jeans formula is the one I'd teach first. A lightweight double-breasted trench in beige or khaki, ending just below the knee, over a navy and cream striped long-sleeve tee loosely tucked into high-waist straight jeans with a raw hem. Pointed ballet flats or low block-heel loafers. A canvas tote and a fine gold chain. The length relationship matters: a knee-length trench over a cropped jean shows a strip of ankle that keeps the coat from swallowing you. On a warm afternoon, wear it over your shoulders.
3. Pastel Blazer With Jeans Spring Outfit

Swap a navy blazer for a pastel one and jeans stop reading as a work compromise. I'd choose a single-button blazer in butter yellow, powder blue or mint, over a plain white crewneck tee, with clean mid-wash slim or straight jeans. No heavy distressing; it fights the tailoring. Nude loafers or white low-tops, a small neutral crossbody and a couple of thin silver rings. Pastels can look washed out on very fair skin in flat light, so if that's you, the white tee near your face helps.
4. Floral Midi Dress Spring Outfit

A floral midi is the simplest formula on this list because the dress does three jobs at once. I look for a flowing cut with a small print on a cream or blush ground; ditsy florals hide creases and small spills far better than solids. White leather sneakers for errands, strappy heeled sandals and sculptural earrings for an evening outside. A cropped denim jacket or a thin cardigan for wind, a rattan bag and pink lipstick. If you're petite, check that the print isn't so large that one bloom covers your whole torso.
5. Wide-Leg Pants And Cropped Sweater Outfit

Wide-leg pants with a cropped sweater is a proportion formula, and it only works when the two meet exactly. High-waist wide-leg trousers in cotton twill or a linen blend, in cream, sage or soft terracotta, with a fine-gauge cropped knit that ends right at the natural waist. If the sweater stops even an inch above the trouser waistband, you get an accidental gap; an inch below, and it bunches. Platform espadrilles or kitten-heel mules add height, which wide legs need unless you're tall. A slim leather belt and a structured top-handle bag.
6. Oversized Shirt Dress Spring Outfit

An oversized shirt dress is a whole outfit in one hanger. Crisp cotton poplin in white, powder blue or a fine pinstripe, falling to mid-calf with a relaxed collar. Belt it with a slim tie-belt for shape, or leave it loose. White platform sneakers make it walkable; flat slides make it softer. On a cool morning, a knit vest over the top, removed by midday. A canvas tote and tortoiseshell sunglasses. Poplin wrinkles where a belt sits, so I tie the belt loosely if I'll be sitting for hours.
7. Knit Dress And Sneakers Spring Outfit

A fine ribbed knit dress handles a chilly morning that turns into a warm afternoon better than most separates. Midi length in oatmeal, dusty rose or dove gray, fitted but not tight, with a crew or soft scoop neck. Choose a thin cotton or viscose rib, not a heavy wool, so you don't overheat. Chunky white sneakers and a belt bag worn crossbody give it a sporty edge. A pendant and studs. When the evening cools, a denim jacket or a cropped bomber. Fitted ribbed knits show underwear lines, so smooth, no-show underwear is worth it here.
8. Denim Midi Skirt Spring Outfit

The denim midi skirt is back, and I like it because it does a dress's job with a separate's flexibility. A front-slit or A-line shape in mid indigo, ending at mid-calf. Tuck in a crisp white shirt or an eyelet cotton top. On cool days, a cropped beige trench or a light cardigan. White sneakers for daytime, slingback kitten heels for something dressier. A slim leather shoulder bag and layered gold chains. A rigid denim midi without a slit makes stairs and long strides hard, so I'd check how far you can step before buying.
9. Cargo Pants And Fitted Top Spring Outfit

Utility-inspired cargo pants look sharpest with a close-fitting top. I'd choose a tailored high-waist cargo with a straight or slightly tapered leg in khaki, olive or stone, and nothing too baggy. Then a ribbed sleeveless bodysuit or a slim square-neck tank, tucked. Strappy flat sandals or heeled mules move it away from hiking-trail territory. A mini structured bag and oversized acetate sunglasses. If the cargos sit loose at the waist, a thin gold chain belt pulls them in. Watch what goes in the side pockets; anything heavier than a phone pulls the leg out of line.
10. Cropped Cardigan And High-Waist Jeans Outfit

A cropped cardigan worn as a top with high-waist jeans is a 90s formula that only works if the knit ends where the jeans begin. Cotton or linen blend in lilac, peach or pistachio, ending at the lower rib, buttoned all the way with nothing underneath. Rigid vintage light-wash straight jeans that sit snug at the waist. Woven leather mules or ballet flats, a simple shoulder bag, tiny hoops. If your torso is long, a cardigan cut for a short torso can leave skin showing, so try it with your own jeans.
11. Pleated Midi Skirt Spring Outfit

A pleated midi in lavender, mint or champagne moves every time you walk, which is half its appeal. Fine knife pleats hold best in synthetic fabrics; natural fibers soften and need pressing. Tuck in a fitted crewneck tee or a thin cashmere-blend sweater so the volume stays below the waist. White sneakers give it a sporty edge; pointed flats or kitten heels make it dressier. A slim leather watch and fine drop earrings. It works for a baby shower, brunch or a spring wedding as a guest, as long as the shade isn't so pale it reads as white.
12. Monochrome Outfit Spring

One color family head to toe makes getting dressed nearly automatic. For spring I'd go cream: a ribbed turtleneck under a single-breasted cream blazer, with flowing cream wide-leg trousers. Texture keeps it from looking flat, so mix matte cotton, a silky knit and nubby linen. Nude loafers or block-heel sandals, a beige suede clutch and one sculptural bangle. Creams vary a lot from piece to piece; I hold them together in daylight, since a yellowish cream beside a pink one looks like a mismatch rather than a tonal choice.
13. Sheer Blouse And Trousers Spring Outfit

A sheer blouse over tailored trousers is the most wearable way into sheer fabric. High-waist crepe trousers in black, navy or charcoal; a cami or tonal bralette underneath; then a silk-chiffon blouse in ivory or pale blush, top buttons open. The base layer decides how much shows, so I match it to your skin tone or the blouse color rather than wearing white. Pointed slingback heels, a fine layered necklace and an envelope clutch. Chiffon snags on jewelry and frays at the seams, so it's a hand-wash piece.
14. Boyfriend Jeans And Graphic Tee Spring Outfit

Relaxed boyfriend jeans, slouchy through the hip with a cuffed or gently tapered ankle, plus a vintage graphic or logo tee tucked in. The third piece makes it a formula: an oversized white or blue button-down worn open with rolled sleeves. Chunky retro sneakers and a cap, or flat sandals and a woven crossbody. Knot the shirt hem at the waist if you want shape. Boyfriend jeans add volume at the hip, so if you're petite, a tapered ankle and a cuff that shows a little skin keep you from looking swamped.
15. Satin Midi Skirt And T-Shirt Spring Outfit

Satin skirt plus cotton tee is high-low dressing at its easiest. A bias-cut midi with a soft sheen in champagne, mocha or dusty blue drapes over the hip; a slightly oversized white crewneck tee, sleeves rolled once, tucked in. White leather trainers keep it casual; strappy heeled sandals push it toward evening. A chain-link bag and a slim belt. Bias-cut satin clings wherever it touches, so the tee needs to tuck flat, and I'd choose a heavier satin over a thin one that shows every line.
16. Midi Dress And Utility Jacket Spring Outfit

A hip-length utility jacket over a midi dress stretches your dresses into early spring. Patch pockets, a relaxed fit, olive, sand or faded black. Underneath, anything from a ruffled floral to a sleek ribbed tank dress. Ankle boots with a low stacked heel make it tougher; white sneakers make it softer. A leather crossbody with a silk scarf on the handle. The jacket should end at the hip, not the waist, or it cuts the dress awkwardly and shortens your legs.
17. Oversized Blazer And Mini Skirt Outfit

An oversized blazer over a fitted mini balances coverage on top with leg below. A single-breasted wool-blend blazer in sand, gray or soft black that reaches mid-thigh, over a slim tank or bodysuit in a matching shade, with a high-waisted A-line or straight mini. Loafers with white socks for a preppy edge, ankle-strap heels for evening. A micro top-handle bag and small gold hoops. The blazer and skirt hem should finish close to each other; if the skirt peeks out by an inch, it can look as if you forgot to wear one.
18. Leather Jacket And Straight-Leg Jeans Outfit

A black leather moto jacket is the right weight for cool spring evenings. Over a heather gray or white crewneck tee tucked into rigid mid-wash straight jeans with a clean ankle crop. Black Chelsea boots or lug-sole loafers. A black nylon crossbody and one silver cuff. Real leather softens and molds to you, so a new jacket can feel stiff at the elbows for the first several wears. Faux leather won't mold the same way and can crack at the folds with age.
19. Two-Piece Knit Set Spring Outfit

A matching knit set is the grown-up version of a sweat suit. A relaxed, open-front longline cardigan and matching wide-leg knit trousers in oatmeal, slate blue or pale sage, with a white ribbed tank underneath to break the color. Minimalist leather slides or woven mules, a large leather tote, thin hoops and a fine chain. It's good for travel and working from a café. The weak point is the trousers: knit seats stretch out when you sit for hours, so I'd look for a firmer knit and fold the set rather than hang it.
20. Striped Shorts And White Tank Spring Outfit

Tailored striped shorts are the base when the temperature finally rises. High-waist cotton-linen shorts in navy and white or tan and cream, with a clean ribbed white tank tucked in. For cool mornings, a cotton voile button-down worn long and open. Flat sandals or woven platform slides, a straw bucket bag and cat-eye sunglasses. Vertical stripes lengthen the leg, horizontal ones widen it, and on shorts that difference is easy to see. It suits a picnic or a beach-town walk.
21. Button-Down Shirt And Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

An oversized cotton button-down tucked into floor-grazing wide-leg trousers is my answer for a meeting where a suit feels like too much. White or blue pinstripe, cuffs rolled to the forearm, tucked into high-waist trousers with a fluid drape and a flat front in sand, taupe or soft olive. Pointed slingbacks in metallic or patent lift the line. A slim leather belt and a structured shoulder bag. Hem the trousers for the shoe you'll actually wear; a floor-length hem that works with heels will drag with flats.
22. Slip Dress And Sneakers Spring Outfit

A bias-cut slip dress with sneakers is high-low again, with the 90s white tee trick underneath. A midi satin or silk-blend slip in champagne, dusty lavender or espresso, thin straps and a soft V. A slim white cotton tee under it adds warmth and coverage. Classic white tennis sneakers, a canvas tote and a silver pendant. For the evening, a cropped denim jacket or a light trench. The tee has to be slim or it rucks up under the satin, and a crew neck sits better than a V under a V-neck slip.
23. Vest Top And Tailored Trousers Spring Outfit

A knit vest worn as a top shows a little arm and still looks tailored. A sleeveless V or crew neck in thin merino or cotton, ivory, black or caramel, tucked into high-waist trousers with a sharp center crease in a wide or straight cut. A leather belt with plain hardware, pointed mules or low block heels, a structured bag and architectural earrings. I check the armholes before anything else; a vest cut for layering often has deep armholes that show your bra when worn alone.
24. Polo Shirt And Linen Pants Spring Outfit

A polo with linen trousers is preppy with a holiday edge. A slim or slightly oversized cotton polo in a faded coral, mint or ivory, loosely tucked into high-waist wide-leg linen trousers in a neutral. Woven leather loafers or backless mules, a leather crossbody and oval sunglasses. It's a good outfit for a spring resort getaway or a Sunday market. Polo collars curl after a few washes; laying the collar flat while it dries helps it keep its shape.
25. Long Tunic Over Trousers Spring Outfit

A long tunic over fluid trousers makes one long column, which suits anyone who wants to look taller. A hip- or thigh-length button-down in crisp white poplin or linen worn open over a slim ribbed tank or a nude-toned bodysuit. Softly tailored trousers with a straight or slightly tapered leg in a matching neutral. Pointed mules or flat slides, a thin metallic belt over the tunic just below the waist, a sleek shoulder bag and fine hoops. Thigh length works over slim trousers; over wide legs it can look bulky, so I'd go hip length there.
Adjusting the Proportions for Petite, Tall and Curvy Frames
The formulas above stay the same on any body. What changes is length and where things meet.
Petite
Midi hems and long coats need shortening most. A midi skirt that ends at mid-calf on a taller woman can hit near your ankle, which cuts the leg at its narrowest point. I'd hem it to just below the widest part of the calf, and keep layers at the hip rather than the thigh.
Tall
Cropped pieces get shorter on you, so cropped sweaters, minis and cropped jeans can look accidental. Look for long-length trousers and check sleeve length under a blazer, since too-short sleeves are the first thing that shows.
Curvy
Wrap shapes, waist seams and fluid fabrics work in your favor; boxy shirt dresses and stiff denim skirts often don't. Bias-cut satin clings, so a heavier satin or a matte crepe is kinder. If a blazer fits your bust but gapes at the waist, a tailor can take in the back seams far more easily than fix the shoulders.
Three Formulas Are Enough to Start
Pick two or three formulas that match how your week actually runs, and copy them with what you already own before buying anything. Swap the colors, shoes or accessories freely; the structure is what you're borrowing. If a formula keeps failing, it's usually the proportion between two pieces, not the pieces themselves. Try one tomorrow morning and note what you'd change.
