Spring can't decide what it wants. One morning is forty degrees and raining, the next is warm enough for sandals by lunch, and standing in front of the closet at seven gets old fast. That's why I hand clients spring go-to outfit formulas instead of individual outfits: a fixed recipe of three or four pieces you can repeat with different colors and never have to rethink. The 25 below lean on things most closets already hold, a trench, straight jeans, crisp shirts, flat shoes, and each one is written so the top layer comes off when the afternoon warms up. Office days, brunch and errands are all covered.

Pieces That Turn Up Again and Again Below
Read through the 25 formulas and the same items keep coming back. That's on purpose. Before buying anything new for spring, I have clients check their closet against this short set, because owning these in colors that go together covers most of the outfits that follow.
- A neutral trench or light jacket (trench, denim, utility or chore), the layer you take off at noon.
- Straight-leg jeans in one light and one medium wash.
- A white tee and a crisp white button-down.
- One pair of tailored trousers that drape, in a neutral.
- A midi skirt or dress with movement, pleated, floral or satin.
- White leather sneakers, loafers and one pair of flats or low heels.
Notice what isn't on that list: anything in a trend color or a loud print. Those are the pieces that rotate in and out. The formulas work because the base stays plain and the one changing piece carries the season.
1. Trench Coat + Straight-Leg Jeans + White Tee + Sneakers

If I could only give someone one spring formula, it would be this. A light trench in a neutral shade over a white crew-neck tee, light-wash straight-leg jeans and clean white leather sneakers. The straight leg is what makes it work with a trench: skinny jeans look thin under a long coat, and wide legs fight its volume. A canvas tote and small gold jewelry finish it. When the afternoon warms up, the trench comes off and what's left is still a complete outfit. Coffee runs, a casual Friday or a Saturday market all suit it.
2. Oversized Blazer + Tailored Trousers + Knit Tank + Loafers

A slightly oversized blazer in beige, cream or light gray over a fitted knit tank is how I make tailoring feel relaxed. The tank keeps the body slim under the extra room in the jacket. Fluid trousers, crepe or a wool blend that drapes, stay comfortable through a long day of sitting. Black or cognac leather loafers and a structured shoulder bag finish it. For spring workdays or a client lunch, the knit softens the suit enough to feel approachable. Check that the oversized blazer still ends below the hip; a big jacket cut short looks boxy.
3. Denim Jacket + Floral Midi Dress + White Sneakers

Denim and florals is the pairing I see most in spring, and the print size matters more than people think. A small-scale floral reads fresh and casual; a big, splashy print plus a denim jacket can feel busy. I look for a midi with a defined waist and a skirt that moves. The jacket goes over the shoulders on a warm day and on properly when it's cool. White sneakers, a neutral crossbody and small hoops finish it for a brunch that turns into a long walk.
4. Lightweight Cardigan + Satin Slip Skirt + Tank + Block Heels

Knit and satin is a texture mix that makes even a basic outfit look planned. A light cardigan, buttoned or open, over a simple tank, with a satin slip skirt below. Satin cut on the bias clings over the hips and shows every line underneath, so I choose a skirt with a little more weight or a lining. Low block-heel sandals are dressy but easy to walk in. Soft pastels or neutrals keep it springlike, and it suits a baby shower or a dinner out.
5. Button-Down Shirt + High-Waisted Wide-Leg Trousers + Mules

A crisp button-down tucked into high-waisted wide-leg trousers is the formula I'd keep for days when I don't know where I'll end up. Roll the sleeves once or twice. A slim leather belt in the same color as the mules or slides ties the waist and the feet together. With wide trousers, hem length is the thing to get right: the hem should brush the top of the shoe and nearly reach the floor, and it should be hemmed for the shoes you'll actually wear. Add a plain watch and it goes from office to dinner.
6. Chunky Knit Sweater + White Jeans + Ankle Boots

A chunky sweater in pastel or cream with white jeans is how a winter knit becomes a spring outfit; the white denim does most of the seasonal work. I'd tuck just the front of the sweater, because a full tuck of a thick knit puts bulk right at the waistband. Neutral ankle boots handle a wet day. A crossbody and simple studs finish it. If you're petite, a cropped chunky knit keeps the proportion from swamping you. Good for lunch with a friend or a shopping trip.
7. Shirtdress + Woven Belt + Espadrilles

One piece, dressed: a midi shirtdress in cotton or linen with a woven leather belt. The belt is not optional for me here, because a shirtdress worn straight can look like a smock, and a belt gives it a waist. Linen wrinkles within an hour, so accept it or pick a cotton-linen blend. Espadrille wedges or flats, a straw tote and simple gold accessories complete it. A farmers market or an outdoor lunch is where this one belongs.
8. Utility Jacket + Straight-Leg Jeans + Striped Tee + Sneakers

An olive or khaki utility jacket over a Breton stripe and medium-wash straight jeans: practical and good-looking in equal parts. The pockets are actually useful on a travel day. I look for a jacket in cotton twill that softens with washing, and roll the cuffs once so the stripes show at the wrist. White sneakers and a canvas backpack or crossbody keep it relaxed. The stripes add pattern without clashing with anything. Park outings and errands both suit it.
9. Leather Jacket + Floral Print Dress + Combat Boots

A worn-in leather jacket over a floral dress gives the print some edge. A mini or midi both work, though a very floaty maxi tends to look lost under a short moto. Lace-up combat boots keep it grounded. A simple black shoulder bag is all you need. As the day warms up, the jacket comes off; I'd carry it over an arm rather than tying it at the waist, which stretches leather at the sleeves. Concerts, casual dates and a day in the city.
10. T-shirt Dress + Denim Jacket + Canvas Sneakers

A t-shirt dress in soft cotton jersey is about as comfortable as dressing gets. The risk is that thin jersey clings and shows lines, so I look for a heavier weight that skims the body. A light-wash denim jacket worn open or tied at the waist covers cool moments. Canvas sneakers in a neutral or one bright color, a crossbody and oversized sunglasses finish it. Good for school drop-off or a slow Sunday.
11. Knit Vest + Button-Down Shirt + Trousers + Loafers

A slim knit vest over a white button-down with neutral tailored trousers and penny or horsebit loafers: preppy, but not costume. In spring I choose a fine-gauge cotton or merino vest so the layer doesn't trap heat, and I make sure the armholes sit close so the shirt doesn't puff out at the sides. A leather satchel finishes it. Creative offices and gallery visits suit it, and the vest comes off if the room gets warm.
12. Crewneck Sweater + Pleated Midi Skirt + Ballet Flats

A light crewneck in a soft spring shade with a flowing pleated midi skirt is my default for ladylike events. The sweater should end at the waist or be tucked; a long sweater over pleats flattens them. Ballet flats in a matching or close tone, a mini crossbody and pearl studs complete it. It's right for a bridal shower or an afternoon tea without being overdressed.
13. Linen Button-Down + Denim Shorts + Sandals

Linen breathes better than almost anything once spring turns warm. A relaxed linen button-down in white, natural or a soft stripe with denim shorts, left loose or tucked at the front only. I size up slightly in linen shirts because the fabric has no stretch and pulls across the back when you reach. Flat leather sandals, a straw hat and a woven tote finish it. Beach towns and picnics are what this one is for.
14. Cropped Trench Coat + High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans + Kitten Heels

A cropped trench is the trick for showing off a high waist. Ending at the waistband, it makes the leg in high-waisted wide-leg jeans look longer than a full-length trench would. Keep the top fitted, a tee or bodysuit tucked in, so the line stays clean. Kitten-heel mules or slingbacks are dressy but comfortable. A structured mini bag finishes it for dinner out or a gallery evening. On petite frames this is one of the most flattering formulas here.
15. Boxy Blazer + Bike Shorts + Graphic Tee + Dad Sneakers

This is the high-low formula: a boxy blazer in a neutral check or solid color over a vintage-style graphic tee, with bike shorts and chunky dad sneakers. The blazer has to be the most polished piece, sharp shoulders and a clean lapel, or the outfit just looks like gym clothes. Bike shorts should be a thick, matte fabric; thin shiny ones look like underwear in daylight. A baseball cap and mini shoulder bag finish it. City exploring and coffee dates suit it.
16. Wrap Dress + Wedge Espadrilles + Straw Clutch

A wrap dress adjusts to the body at the tie, which is why it fits so many shapes. Three-quarter or short sleeves in a cheerful print or a solid jewel tone feel right for spring. I always check the wrap neckline sitting down and bending forward, because some cuts gape. A snap or a small safety pin inside solves it. Wedge espadrilles add height, a straw clutch brings texture, and simple gold hoops finish it for Easter brunch or a garden party.
17. Chore Jacket + Cropped Wide-Leg Pants + Tee + Sneakers

A cotton chore jacket is the layer I wear most from March to May. Faded blue, olive or natural over a plain tee, with cropped wide-leg pants that show the ankle. The cropped length matters with sneakers; a full-length wide leg drags over them. White or retro sneakers, a canvas tote and a cap complete it. Active days, market runs and long walks across town suit it, and the jacket covers a breezy morning.
18. Slouchy Cardigan + Tank + White Denim + Sandals

An open, slouchy cardigan over a tank or cami with white jeans: the white denim is what stops this from looking like loungewear. I keep the cardigan long enough to cover the hip, since a slouchy knit that ends at the waist looks unfinished. Slide sandals or flat mules and a long pendant necklace that draws the eye down. It suits a home day that might include a coffee with a friend.
19. Poncho or Cape + Skinny Jeans + Knee-High Boots

A knit poncho or cape in a neutral tone is a cold-morning layer that's easier to throw on than a coat. With all that volume on top, the bottom half has to be slim: skinny or slim jeans and knee-high boots with a low heel. A crossbody strap fights a poncho, so I carry a structured handbag instead. Good for travel days or a blustery spring afternoon.
20. Tie-Front Blouse + High-Waisted Trousers + Pointed Flats

A tie-front or pussy-bow blouse softens tailored trousers right away. Silk or chiffon moves nicely; polyester versions are fine but can feel warm. High-waisted trousers in a spring pastel or a neutral, pointed-toe flats to lengthen the leg, a slim belt and fine jewelry. The tie draws the eye up to the face, so I keep earrings small. It goes from office to dinner and looks current rather than dated.
21. Quilted Jacket + Straight Jeans + Chunky Loafers

A light quilted jacket in olive, navy or cream is a smart late-winter-to-spring layer, warm without bulk. Over a long-sleeve tee with medium or dark straight jeans, it looks more finished than a hoodie with very little effort. Chunky lug-sole loafers give grip on wet pavement and feel current. A woven crossbody and gold accessories complete it. A country walk or the school run suits it fine.
22. Puff-Sleeve Top + Fitted Midi Skirt + Slingback Heels

For something a little more dressed up, a puff-sleeve top tucked into a fitted midi skirt. Puff sleeves add width at the shoulder, so I'd balance them with a skirt that skims rather than flares. Ribbed knit or satin both work. If your shoulders are already broad, a smaller puff or a flutter sleeve keeps the balance. Low slingback heels, a small structured bag and pearl or gold earrings finish it for a shower, a graduation or any spring celebration.
23. Sweater Vest + Linen Trousers + Slide Sandals

A fine sweater vest worn on its own, over a bralette or bandeau, with relaxed linen trousers in the same color: a tonal look for warm days. The vest needs a close fit at the armhole if it's worn alone, otherwise the bra shows from the side. Leather slides, layered gold chains and an oversized tote finish it. It suits brunch or a relaxed creative office.
24. Cropped Cardigan + High-Waisted Jeans + Ballet Flats

A cropped cashmere or cotton cardigan buttoned over a simple cami pairs with high-waisted jeans because the short top meets the tall waistband, with a sliver of skin at most. Straight-leg jeans give the cleanest line. Ballet flats in a pastel or metallic shade, a small shoulder bag and a fine necklace finish it. Low-rise jeans don't work here; the gap gets too wide. A coffee date or a slow shopping afternoon is what this one is for.
25. Trench Vest + Poplin Shirt + Cropped Jeans + Loafers

A sleeveless trench vest gives structure without the weight of a full coat. Over a poplin shirt with the collar out, with raw-hem cropped jeans and penny or light lug-sole loafers. I like the vest left open so it hangs straight; belted, it can pull awkwardly across the bust. A leather tote and simple studs finish it. It's a good formula for a cool commute that turns into a warm afternoon.
Adjusting a Formula to Your Height and Shape
A formula is a starting point, not a rule. The pieces stay the same, but the proportions need small changes depending on your frame, and those changes are what make an outfit look like it was planned for you.
Under Five Foot Four
Shorter jackets work hardest for you: a cropped trench, a cropped cardigan, a jacket that ends at the hip. Keep the shoe and the trouser close in color, and choose midi skirts that end just below the knee rather than mid-calf, which can cut the leg at its widest point.
Tall Frames
Long trench coats, full-length wide-leg trousers and maxi skirts are all yours. The trouble is usually sleeve and hem length, so check that sleeves reach the wrist bone and that cropped pants were meant to be cropped and don't just look short.
Curvier Figures
Look for a defined waist: wrap dresses, belted shirtdresses, high-waisted trousers with a front tuck. Fabrics with some weight, a heavier crepe or a ponte, skim rather than cling. Boxy pieces like the oversized blazer still work if they end below the hip and are worn open.
Three Formulas Worth Saving for Rushed Mornings
Spring dressing gets easier when you stop building outfits and start repeating recipes. With a handful of pieces, these formulas cover office days, weekends and occasions, and the only real skill is knowing which ones suit your shape and your weather. Pick three that use what you already own, wear each of them twice in the next two weeks, and keep the ones you reach for again. The rest can wait until you need them.
