The hard part of dressing a pregnancy is that the body you shop for in month four isn't the one you'll have in month eight. Clothes that fit beautifully one week press on the bump the next. Maternity clothes have moved well past tent dresses and basic leggings, though: there's relaxed tailoring, matching sets, fitted dresses that show the bump, and pieces that still work after the birth. These 25 outfits cover the office, weekend plans, a baby shower and plain everyday wear. For each one, I've noted which trimester it suits best and what to check before you buy.

Buying in the Right Order, Trimester by Trimester
Most women don't need a full maternity wardrobe all at once. Here's the order I suggest buying in, so nothing gets outgrown before it's worn.
- First trimester. Usually your own clothes still fit, with some bloating. A belly band, or a hair tie looped through the jeans buttonhole, buys you a few more weeks.
- Second trimester. Buy the bottoms: maternity jeans, leggings and one pair of trousers. Most maternity sizes match your pre-pregnancy size.
- Third trimester. Add longer tops and a dress or two cut for a big bump, plus shoes for swelling feet.
- Any time. Wrap dresses, empire waists and open jackets work throughout and beyond.
Check a few clothes from your own wardrobe before buying anything new. Stretchy knits, wrap dresses and oversized shirts often last well into the second trimester without any changes.
1. Maternity jeans outfit with oversized blazer

Jeans and an oversized blazer is the first outfit I put together for most pregnant clients, because both pieces carry on working as the bump grows. Choose straight or slim maternity jeans with an over-the-bump or side panel, then a ribbed tank or plain cotton tee and a relaxed single-breasted blazer in cream, camel or charcoal. Wear the blazer open; it frames the bump instead of trying to close over it. White leather sneakers or pointed flats, a small crossbody and simple gold jewelry finish it. Buy the blazer in your usual size, not a maternity cut, so you'll wear it for years.
2. Ribbed knit maternity dress and sneakers

A ribbed knit dress stretches with you from the first trimester to the last. The vertical ribs give support across the bump and spring back rather than sagging. Pick a midi in oatmeal, taupe or black and wear it with chunky white sneakers. An open long cardigan or oversized denim jacket covers you when it's cooler, and a canvas tote and small hoops finish it. Cheap rib knits get thin and see-through where they stretch most, so check the fabric over your bump in good light as you get further along.
3. Flowy maxi dress for pregnancy summer

Pregnancy makes you run warm, so a light maxi dress is often the only thing that feels comfortable in a summer third trimester. Cotton voile, rayon and light jersey skim the bump without sticking. A floral or a soft pastel suits the season. Flat sandals with cushioned soles matter more than they used to, since your feet are carrying more weight. A wide straw hat, a shoulder bag and a few fine necklaces finish it for a market morning or a babymoon dinner by the sea.
4. Matching maternity co ord lounge set

A matching lounge set feels like pajamas and looks like an outfit. Choose soft knit or French terry with enough stretch for every stage: a relaxed crewneck or hoodie with wide-leg pants or joggers. Sage, dusty blue and heather grey look calm and considered. Slides or white trainers keep it casual, and a long trench over the top makes it presentable for a coffee run. Look for a waistband that can fold under or over the bump; a fixed elastic waist that sits across the middle gets uncomfortable fast after month six.
5. Maternity jumpsuit outfit casual summer

A maternity jumpsuit gets you dressed in two minutes, which matters on tired mornings. Look for adjustable straps, an elasticated waist or a wrap front so there's room as you grow. Linen blends and soft jersey work in warm weather. Flat sandals or woven slides, a denim jacket for the evening, a straw bag and cat-eye sunglasses finish it. The honest drawback: jumpsuits are awkward for frequent bathroom trips later in pregnancy, so I'd choose one with a front zip or buttons, not a back zip.
6. Wrap dress maternity outfit baby shower

A wrap dress grows with you because the tie adjusts as the bump does, and the V-neck draws the eye to your face, which is what you want in baby shower photos. A midi in a soft floral, dusty rose or a small polka dot all work. Nude block-heel sandals give a little height without tipping your balance. A fine pendant, pearl studs, a woven clutch and loose curls finish it. Late in pregnancy, a wrap can open at the hem when you sit, so a small stitch or safety pin where the skirt overlaps keeps it closed.
7. Sweater dress maternity outfit fall

For fall, a fine-gauge sweater dress at midi or knee length stretches over the bump without losing shape. Fine knits stay smooth; chunky ones add bulk you don't need. Rust, olive, camel and cream suit autumn light. Flat knee boots in suede or leather keep the leg line long, and a longline wool-blend coat on top is warm without needing to button over your middle. A felt hat and a leather satchel finish it for a pumpkin patch or dinner. Check that the boot shaft isn't tight at the calf; swelling later in the day can make snug boots painful.
8. Linen maternity dress outfit summer brunch

Linen is my favorite fabric for a summer pregnancy because it breathes and hangs away from the body. An A-line or relaxed shift in ivory, sand or soft sage needs very little else: flat leather sandals or espadrilles, a woven tote and slim sunglasses. It's an easy brunch or garden-party dress. Make sure the shift has enough length at the front. A bump lifts a straight hem, so a dress that's knee-length before pregnancy can end several inches higher at the front by the third trimester.
9. Maternity leggings outfit with oversized sweater

Maternity leggings with an oversized sweater is the outfit for days you want to feel comfortable and still look like you made an effort. Choose leggings with a thick over-the-bump panel that stays up all day; thin panels roll down. A chunky cable knit or soft cashmere-blend sweater balances the fitted legs. Cream, charcoal and camel look neat together. Leather-look slip-ons and a quilted crossbody finish it, with a long pendant for a vertical line. It suits school runs, travel days and quiet weekends.
10. Maternity shorts outfit with button-down shirt

For hot days, maternity shorts in cotton or linen with a stretchy waistband, under or over the bump, plus an oversized button-down worn open over a white tank or fitted maternity tee. Roll the sleeves and tie the shirt loosely above the bump if you like. Flat sandals or white sneakers, a canvas tote, an anklet and a cap finish it. Under-bump shorts feel cooler, but they can slip as the bump grows; once that happens, I'd switch to an over-bump pair.
11. Bodycon maternity dress for date night

A bodycon maternity dress shows the bump instead of hiding it, and many women feel great in one. A midi in burgundy, emerald or black looks rich. Strappy low block heels and a clutch suit a date night, and a cropped tailored jacket or fitted leather moto over the shoulders adds contrast. A cuff and slim drop earrings are enough. Bodycon fabric shows every line underneath, so smooth, no-show maternity underwear makes a big difference. It's not the dress for anyone who wants less attention on their shape.
12. Wide-leg maternity pants and fitted tank

Wide-leg maternity pants in crepe or Tencel with a fitted tank make a balanced shape: close over the bump, full at the leg. Look for an elastic back waistband or a soft over-bump panel. A ribbed cotton or silky knit tank sits smoothly over the middle. Flat sandals or low mules, sculptural earrings and a structured tote suit a casual office or dinner. Wide legs can catch under your heel on stairs, so hem them for the flats you'll actually wear while pregnant.
13. Maternity denim jacket outfit with midi dress

A soft stretch denim jacket worn open over a floral midi dress is a combination that works across seasons. The open jacket frames the bump rather than fighting it. White low-tops or flat ankle boots, a woven crossbody and gold hoops finish it. This is what I'd pack for unpredictable weather: the jacket comes off as the day warms up. Don't buy a maternity denim jacket; your regular jacket worn open will fit right to the end.
14. Silk slip dress maternity wedding guest

A silk or satin slip dress is a smart choice for a wedding while pregnant. A bias cut, which means the fabric is cut on the diagonal, drapes and stretches slightly over the bump. You can also size up in a non-maternity style with a relaxed cut. Sapphire, amethyst and champagne suit an evening. Low metallic heels or kitten heels, a wrap or cashmere shawl for the ceremony, statement earrings and a small embellished clutch finish it. Satin shows sweat, so for summer weddings I lean toward a matte crepe in the same cut.
15. Trench coat maternity outfit spring

A light trench over a cotton crewneck tee and relaxed maternity trousers is my go-to for spring appointments and workdays. Wear the trench open for a long line, or tie the belt loosely above the bump. Pointed loafers or ballet flats, a structured leather bag and a silk scarf keep it crisp. Your regular trench will likely still close over a first-trimester bump. Later, leave it open; trying to button it across the middle pulls the back seam and drags the hem up at the front.
16. Off-shoulder maternity dress for photoshoot

An off-shoulder maxi frames the collarbones and shoulders, then flows over the bump, which makes it a favorite for a maternity photoshoot. Crepe or chiffon in ivory, blush or dusty blue catches the light. Thin heeled sandals, pearl or crystal studs, soft waves and natural makeup finish it. Chiffon moves nicely in a breeze. Off-shoulder necklines slide up when you lift your arms, so choose one with elastic or silicone grip and practice your poses in it at home.
17. Maternity overalls outfit with striped tee

Overalls are fun during pregnancy because they have room in front by design. Maternity overalls with adjustable side buttons or stretch panels grow with you. A Breton striped long-sleeve tee underneath, canvas lace-ups or flat espadrilles, a basket bag and a red lip make it a weekend outfit. Roll the hems slightly. Overalls are slow to take off, so in the third trimester, when bathroom trips are frequent, I'd choose a pair with side buttons that open easily.
18. Babydoll maternity dress casual summer

The babydoll dress is cut high under the bust, so the skirt falls over the bump without any adjustment. That makes it one of the easiest dresses to wear right through pregnancy. A short-sleeved cotton or linen version with a small floral or gingham print is cool on hot days. Flat slides or jelly shoes, a mini backpack and round sunglasses keep it playful for a picnic. A short babydoll rides up at the front as the bump grows, so buy it a little longer than you think you need.
19. Maternity pencil skirt outfit for office

A stretchy maternity pencil skirt with a silk blouse looks professional and feels manageable. Look for a soft over-bump band and a back vent so you can climb stairs. Tuck the blouse loosely over the band or wear it out. Low block pumps or neat ballet flats, an open blazer, a leather watch, small studs and a structured tote finish it. Pencil skirts pull up at the front as the bump grows, so check the hem is level in a side mirror; a skirt that's an inch longer at the back is a sign to size up.
20. Maternity activewear outfit gym running

Staying active needs clothes that support you. A supportive maternity sports bra and over-the-bump leggings in a moisture-wicking fabric are the base. A racerback tank and a light zip-up go over the top. The leggings' waistband should be wide and soft, worn over or under the bump as feels right. Cushioned running shoes take the extra load off your joints. A water bottle and a watch complete it. Breast size often changes through pregnancy, so expect to replace the sports bra at least once.
21. Maternity beach outfit cover up swimsuit

A one-piece maternity swimsuit with plenty of stretch and adjustable straps is the base for a pregnant beach day. A sheer kimono cover-up adds sun cover while letting air through. Rubber sandals or waterproof slides, a wide straw hat, polarized sunglasses and a big woven tote finish it. Skin can be more sun-sensitive during pregnancy, so a cover-up with full-length sleeves and real shade from the hat are worth more than they look.
22. Velvet maternity dress for evening event

Stretch velvet in a wrap or A-line dress is a good holiday-party choice: it has a natural sheen and moves with the body. Emerald, sapphire and deep plum look festive. Heeled ankle boots in suede or leather, a metallic clutch, crystal drops and a berry lip finish it, with a cropped faux-fur jacket over the shoulders for warmth. Velvet is warm, and pregnancy already makes you hot, so for a crowded indoor party I'd go sleeveless and keep the jacket for outdoors.
23. Tunic top maternity outfit with leggings

A long tunic over maternity leggings gives coverage over the hips and a long line. Soft cotton blends, bamboo jersey and light knits drape rather than cling. A high-low hem or side slits stop the fabric pulling across the bump. A long pendant, flat boots or backless loafers, a big tote and a wrap scarf make it right for errands or coffee. Backless loafers are a small kindness later on, when bending to fasten shoes gets harder.
24. Maternity evening gown wedding guest formal

An empire-waist gown is the easiest formal shape for pregnancy. The seam sits under the bust, above the bump, and the chiffon or soft satin skirt falls freely from there. Dusty rose, navy and champagne all look formal. Strappy kitten-heel sandals, a crystal clutch, a fine cuff and an updo finish it. A gown with a back zip can be adjusted by a tailor a few weeks before the event, so if you're buying early, leave room and plan a final fitting.
25. Leather jacket maternity outfit casual

A leather jacket worn open over a white cotton tee and dark-wash maternity skinny jeans keeps your usual style. The structured jacket contrasts with the soft stretch underneath. Chunky lug-sole ankle boots add height while staying stable, and a printed scarf at the neck or on the bag adds color. It's a casual dinner or evening walk outfit. Your pre-pregnancy leather jacket will fit through most of pregnancy if you wear it open; just check the shoulders and arms aren't tight.
Over the Bump, Under the Bump or Side Panels
The waistband decides whether a pair of maternity bottoms is comfortable for five months or five weeks. Each type suits different bodies and stages.
- Over-the-bump panels cover the whole belly with stretch fabric. Most supportive and least likely to slip. They can feel warm in summer.
- Under-the-bump bands sit low below the belly. Cooler and less visible under short tops, but they can slide down as the bump grows.
- Side panels keep a regular front with stretch inserts at the hips. They look like normal jeans but run out of room sooner.
- Adjustable elastic with buttonholes inside the waist is handy early on and after the birth.
Shoes Once Your Feet Start to Swell
Many women find their feet swell and spread during pregnancy, especially later in the day, in heat and in the last trimester. Some find their shoe size changes for good. Balance shifts as the bump grows too, so heels that felt fine before can feel unsteady.
I steer clients toward shoes with a wide toe box, a low and broad heel, and an easy fastening: slip-on sneakers, backless loafers, block-heel sandals with adjustable straps. Try new shoes on in the afternoon, when your feet are at their largest, and avoid buying tight boots in the third trimester.
A Wardrobe That Grows From the First Month to the Last
Pregnancy style doesn't mean hiding your body or giving up what you like to wear. You can dress for every trimester with a small mix of maternity basics and pieces you already own. My advice: buy maternity versions only of what has to fit around the waist, like jeans, leggings and trousers. Then rely on jackets worn open, wrap and empire dresses, and stretchy knits for everything else. Those last two groups often carry on into the postpartum months too.
