A lot of women spend the first months of pregnancy hiding behind oversized shirts, and then one day they want the opposite. If that's where you are, this list is for you. These outfits use pieces that hug or frame the belly on purpose: fitted knits, cropped tops, wrap dresses and open layers. They cover errands, baby showers, office days and photo shoots, in warm and cold weather. Each one is a complete outfit, and with each I've added what I check when I fit it on a real bump, because a dress that shows off a belly at 22 weeks can behave very differently at 34.

What a Fitted Dress Shows Besides the Bump
When you dress to show the belly, the fabric shows everything else too. A few things catch people out the first time they wear something fitted while pregnant.
- The navel. Later in pregnancy many belly buttons flatten or pop out, and thin knits show it clearly. A heavier rib, ponte or a lined dress smooths it.
- Underwear lines. Maternity briefs sit high or low, and both can show through stretch fabric. Smooth, no-show styles in your skin tone are the fix.
- Bra lines. Your bust is changing, and an old bra that's too small cuts into the back. A properly fitted maternity bra looks smoother under a clingy top.
- Sheerness. Light colors stretched over a bump become see-through. Check in daylight, not in the fitting room.
The weight of the knit matters most. If you can see your hand through the fabric when you stretch it, it'll show too much on a bump.
1. Crop Top and Maternity Jeans Outfit

A fitted white crop top with low-rise maternity jeans is the most direct way to show the bump. The hem stops above the belly, so the shape does the talking. I'd choose a stretchy ribbed cotton, which holds against the skin, over a thin jersey that rides up and wrinkles. Under-bump jeans in a wide or straight leg sit below the belly, and a wide leg balances it best. White sneakers, an oversized tote and slim sunglasses finish an off-duty look for weekend brunch or a market. Take sunscreen for the bare stretch of belly; pregnancy can make skin more prone to dark patches in the sun.
2. Bodycon Maternity Dress Outfit

For a full curve-hugging look, a bodycon maternity dress is the classic. What separates a good one from a cheap one is the knit: a thick double-knit or heavy rib smooths over underwear lines and holds you, while thin single jersey shows everything and goes see-through when stretched over a bump. A midi length in chocolate, taupe or black is the easiest to wear. Slide sandals or pointed flats, a gold pendant and a structured crossbody take it to dinner or a casual shower. It needs very little styling, so spend on the dress itself.
3. Maternity Maxi Dress With Denim Jacket

A flowy maternity maxi dress in a soft floral or plain pastel is a warm-weather favorite. An empire waist or smocked bodice marks the shape just above the bump, then the skirt falls free. That flowing skirt shows the bump less than a fitted dress does, so if you want it visible, look for a style where the fabric falls straight down from the bump instead of being gathered out over it. A cropped or slightly oversized denim jacket adds structure for cool evenings. Flat sandals or espadrilles, a straw tote and gold bracelets finish it for an outdoor shower or a picnic.
4. Two-Piece Maternity Set Outfit

A matching two-piece set does the coordinating for you. I'd look for a cropped top with a high-waisted midi skirt in ribbed knit or textured crepe. The top ends just above the bump and the skirt stretches over it, so a strip of belly or a smooth line shows depending on how high you pull the skirt. Terracotta, sage and warm beige look fresh against most skin tones. Barely-there heeled sandals, a woven clutch and sculptural hoops suit a shower or special dinner. Check the skirt's waist elastic before buying: it should be wide and soft, since a narrow band rolls down under the weight of a bump.
5. Ribbed Midi Maternity Dress Outfit

A ribbed midi maternity dress in cream, dove gray or dusty blue gets worn constantly once you have one. Vertical ribs lengthen you and cling to the bump without squeezing, and the midi length keeps it easy to move in. White sneakers make it an errand outfit; flat strappy sandals make it a bit more polished. I'd caution that pale ribbed knits show bra lines and a popped navel clearly, so a smooth nude bra and a thin slip help. A light trench or open cardigan handles cooler days, with a chain necklace and a roomy leather tote.
6. Maternity Sweater Dress With Knee-High Boots

Once it gets cold, a maternity sweater dress is the easiest way to keep the bump on show. A fitted rib knit in burgundy, forest green or caramel should stretch over the belly and spring back, not hang in a bag at the seat. Knee-high boots in a flat or low heel are what I'd pair it with, though calves can swell later in pregnancy, so try zip boots on in the afternoon. A long wool coat left open lets the bump show between the coat fronts. A cashmere scarf and a structured leather bag finish it for lunches, holiday gatherings and cold weekend walks.
7. Off-Shoulder Maternity Dress Outfit

An off-shoulder maternity dress has a fitted bodice and a flowy midi or maxi skirt, in a solid jewel tone or small floral. Bare shoulders pull the eye up while the skirt falls over the bump. I always check the elastic at the neckline: it has to hold without digging, because a growing bust pushes it down and you end up hitching it all day. Drop earrings, a fine bracelet and strappy heeled sandals suit a baby shower, maternity photos or date night. A soft updo shows off the neckline. Skip it if you'll be lifting a toddler, since the shoulders won't stay put.
8. Maternity Jumpsuit Outfit

A wide-leg maternity jumpsuit is one piece and done. A smocked or wrap bodice with an elastic waist above the bump shows your shape, and wide legs balance a bigger middle. Dress it up with block-heel sandals and gold jewelry for evening, or wear flat slides and a denim jacket in the day. A sleek clutch or mini bag finishes it. The test I give every jumpsuit is to sit down and reach forward in the fitting room. If the body pulls at the crotch, it's too short for the bump you'll have in a month, so size up or pick another style.
9. Button-Down Shirt and Maternity Jeans Outfit

An oversized button-down worn open over a fitted tank or soft bralette frames the bump between two straight edges. The crisp shirt against a close base layer makes the curve look deliberate. White cotton or light chambray with straight-leg under-bump jeans is the classic version. Roll the sleeves, add small gold hoops and pointed flats or low block heels. It suits casual office days and dinners. Choose a shirt with enough length to cover your seat; that length is what keeps the outfit from looking like a borrowed shirt thrown on in a hurry. I'd wear the bralette version only on casual days.
10. Wrap Maternity Dress Outfit

A wrap maternity dress is adjustable by design: the tie lets you loosen it as you grow. The V-neck and the wrap crossing under the bust give a defined waistline above the bump. I'd pick a midi in deep wine, navy or a dark floral, and a jersey with some weight to it, because thin jersey wraps gape open at the chest. Heeled mules or ankle-strap sandals, a slim gold watch and a small top-handle bag finish it. It goes from a baby shower to dinner to the office, and the wrap front works for nursing afterward.
11. Maternity Overalls Outfit

Denim overalls make maternity style feel playful. Pick a pair with adjustable side buttons or stretch panels so they keep fitting through every trimester. Overalls show the bump in profile more than from the front, since the bib covers it, so a fitted tee underneath shapes the sides. Wear a long-sleeve tee or a cotton tank depending on the season. Roll the cuffs and add chunky retro sneakers or flat ankle boots, with a cap and a backpack. Shorten the straps a little as you grow, or the bib slides under the bump.
12. Cropped Sweater and Maternity Leggings Outfit

A cropped knit sweater with high-waisted over-bump leggings is my cold-weather version of the crop-top look. The sweater ends just above the belly and the leggings cover it, so you show the shape without bare skin. A chunky cable or soft cashmere blend in cream, oatmeal or blush works well. Watch the crop length: if it hits mid-bump, it sits on the curve and rides up all day. White sneakers or shearling slides keep it casual. Wear a long wool coat open on top. It suits coffee dates and travel days.
13. Empire Waist Maternity Dress Outfit

An empire-waist maternity dress has a fitted bodice just above the belly with the skirt falling away from it. In lightweight chiffon or soft jersey with flutter sleeves or lace, it's one of the most romantic shapes here. The bump shows as a soft curve under the skirt rather than a fitted outline. Ankle-wrap ballet flats or low kitten heels, pearl studs and a pastel clutch suit showers, spring weddings and brunch. Check the bodice seam lands under the bust and not across it, because if your bust has grown since you bought it, the seam rides up and looks too small.
14. Blazer and Maternity Trousers Outfit

A tailored blazer over a fitted tank or tee with maternity trousers is a sharp office look. Choose a single-button blazer in a neutral and wear it open; you won't close it from the middle of pregnancy anyway, so buy for the shoulders. The fitted base keeps the bump visible between the lapels. Wide or straight maternity trousers with an over-bump panel finish the line. Pointed loafers or low block heels, a leather tote and small studs complete it. I'd skip a snap-crotch bodysuit late in pregnancy, as the frequent bathroom trips make it a nuisance.
15. Maternity Midi Skirt and Fitted Top Outfit

A stretchy maternity midi skirt with a fitted tee is simple and shows the bump well. The skirt's soft elastic waistband sits over the belly, in black, olive or mocha. Tuck a ribbed tee into the waistband to define your shape. The tuck only works if the tee is long enough to stay in while you move; if it keeps popping out, wear it outside and let the hem sit at the hip instead. Flat slides or white sneakers, a pendant and a woven market tote keep it relaxed. It's an everyday outfit for lunch and shopping.
16. Maternity Slip Dress Outfit

A maternity slip dress in silk or satin-look fabric has an understated feel. Cut on the bias, it skims the bump rather than clinging. It's also unforgiving: bias cuts show underwear lines and can catch on the hips, so I fit it at the widest part and wear smooth underwear. A midi in champagne, dusty rose or black is the easiest to wear. Layer an oversized knit cardigan or cropped jacket for cooler days. Strappy heeled sandals dress it up and flat mules keep it casual. A fine chain bracelet and a small evening bag suit date nights and a dressed-up brunch.
17. Maternity Knit Co-Ord Set Outfit

A knit co-ord set, a cropped or waist-length sweater with a matching ribbed midi skirt, is the most polished way to wear knitwear while pregnant. The top meets the top of the bump and the skirt stretches over it, so the whole outfit reads as one long line. Oatmeal, warm beige and slate gray look the most expensive. Shearling mules or white trainers keep it casual, with a puffer vest or long coat for going out. Heavy knit skirts can stretch out at the seat after a day of sitting; hang them to rest between wears and they'll recover.
18. Lace Maternity Dress Outfit

A lace maternity dress adds texture and a bit of drama. Look for a fitted style with a stretch lining under a floral lace overlay. The lining matters more than the lace: without a stretchy one, lace ends up taut and scratchy over the bump and can show what's underneath. Dusty blue, blush and ivory suit soft daylight. Nude strappy heels, a pearl hair clip and a crystal bracelet finish it for showers, maternity photoshoots or a wedding where you're a guest. Skip ivory for weddings, as it competes with the bride.
19. Maternity Pencil Skirt Outfit

A stretchy maternity pencil skirt outlines the bump clearly. Soft ponte or stretch jersey with an over-bump panel gives gentle support. I'd pair it with a tucked draped blouse or a fitted light sweater for a clean line. A pencil skirt narrows at the hem, so check you can take a full stride and climb stairs in it; a small back vent makes a big difference. Low block-heel pumps or pointed flats, a structured handbag and pearl or gold studs finish it. It goes from the office to an evening event without changes and keeps the bump on show.
20. Long Cardigan Maternity Outfit

A long, open cardigan over a fitted tank and maternity leggings or skinny jeans frames the bump between two vertical lines. The fitted layer underneath keeps the belly the focus, while the cardigan lengthens you. I'd choose oatmeal, charcoal or camel and a knit heavy enough to hang straight; light cardigans swing out to the sides and widen your outline. Flat ankle boots or slip-on sneakers, a light scarf and a leather crossbody complete it. It's a dependable outfit for fall days and travel.
Getting the Bump to Read in Photos
A bump that looks obvious in a mirror can disappear in a straight-on photo, especially before the third trimester. These are the adjustments I make before anyone takes a picture.
- Turn sideways, or at least three-quarters. Front on, a bump looks like a wider waist.
- Choose fabric that follows the curve under the belly. A skirt flaring out from above the bump hides it completely.
- Use contrast. A dark open jacket or cardigan over a lighter fitted base outlines the belly.
- Keep big prints away from the middle. A large floral breaks up the curve; a plain color or fine rib shows it.
- Rest one hand under the bump rather than flat on top. It lifts and defines the shape.
If you're planning formal maternity photos, these effects grow as you do. Most people book them somewhere in the early third trimester, when the bump is round but you're still comfortable standing for a while.
Bring a second outfit that is looser, and a pair of flat shoes. Standing still in heels gets tiring quickly at that stage, and a looser layer gives you somewhere to rest between shots without changing completely.
Showing the Bump With Clothes That Still Let You Breathe
Showing your bump isn't about squeezing into the tightest thing in the shop. The outfits that work best here use a fitted layer with some weight to it, a waistband or seam that sits above or below the belly and never across it, and open or cropped layers that frame the shape. Ribbed dresses, two-piece sets, knit co-ords and blazer with trousers all follow those rules. Start with one or two pieces you'd wear every week, then add from there. Wear what makes you comfortable showing off this shape, and enjoy it while it lasts.
