Rouje is the label founded by Parisian icon Jeanne Damas, and its dresses have a very particular look: retro cuts, small prints, button fronts and waist ties that sit close to the body. A dress like that already carries most of an outfit. What I add as a stylist is the part that makes it look lived in rather than bought that morning: a shoe that changes its mood, a bag with some texture and very little jewelry. Below are the dresses I see most often, from the wrap midi and slip styles to short florals, each with the shoes, layers and accessories I'd put with it.

Button Gaps, Bra Straps and Other Fit Snags
Retro-cut dresses are fitted close at the bust and waist, so they're less forgiving than a loose sundress. Before I style one, I put the client through a few quick checks in front of the mirror.
- Lift both arms and sit down. If a button front pulls into little openings across the bust, size up and take the waist in, or add a small hidden snap between the buttons.
- Check the bra. Square necks, halters and thin straps each need a different one, and a visible strap changes the whole outfit. Plan the bra before the shoes.
- Look at the wrap overlap while walking. A shallow wrap opens at the thigh with every step.
- Check the length in the shoes you'll actually wear. Midi dresses look best ending below the knee or around the narrowest part of the calf, not at its widest point.
Many of these dresses are cut from viscose, which can shrink noticeably if washed warm. If a dress fits perfectly in the store, I'd treat it as hand-wash only from day one.
1. Polka Dot Wrap Dress With Red Mules

Navy polka dots and red shoes is one of the oldest Parisian color tricks there is, and it still works. A wrap midi in navy dots pulls in at the waist and the hem keeps it neat. I'd add a low-heeled red mule rather than a high one, since dots and a stiletto start to look like a fifties costume. A natural straw basket, a thin gold chain and small hoops. Red lipstick that echoes the shoe ties it together for brunch or a museum afternoon.
2. Floral Gabin Midi Dress And Basket Bag

The floral Gabin midi is the style most people picture when they think of this label, and I'd pair it with a woven basket bag every time. The button front, gathered sleeves and waist tie let you set exactly how fitted it looks. Button-front dresses can gape at the bust, so I always check the gap between the second and third button when you lift your arms. Flat tan leather sandals keep it walkable. A silk scarf on the bag handle and round sunglasses are all it needs for a market morning or a garden lunch.
3. Black Slip Dress And Trench Coat Outfit

A black silk slip under a beige trench is my answer to a cool spring morning. The slip skims rather than clings, and the trench worn over the shoulders adds structure. Silk slips show every line underneath, so a plain underslip or smooth, no-line underwear in your skin tone matters more here than any accessory. Black or nude kitten-heel slingbacks keep the line light. A small black shoulder bag with gold hardware and a fine pendant take it from coffee to an early dinner.
4. Red Halter Dress With Gold Jewelry

A coral-red halter with a square neckline and a row of buttons down the front has plenty going on already. I keep the rest simple: flat tan sandals, two gold chains at different lengths and gold hoops that pick up the warmth of the red. Halters need a bra plan; a strapless or a stick-on style is the only option that won't show. A raffia clutch and loose, air-dried waves make it right for a seaside dinner or a rooftop evening.
5. Navy Polka Dot Dress With Raffia Tote

A navy polka dot slip dress feels like something out of a 1990s New Wave film, and I like to keep it from getting too sweet. The bias-cut skirt moves with you and the adjustable straps let you set the neckline. Flat white leather sneakers take it straight into daytime. A big raffia tote for a book and a baguette, and slim black cat-eye sunglasses for a little retro character. It's an outfit for a day of errands that turns into a long lunch.
6. White Floral Dress With Straw Hat

A short white dress scattered with small pink and red flowers is already halfway to a holiday. Puff sleeves and a square neckline do the work, and a wide-brim straw hat finishes the thought. White cotton can be see-through in strong sun, so I check it against a window before deciding what goes underneath. Flat brown sandals with an ankle strap and a woven crossbody leave your hands free. Bare legs, tinted moisturizer and cream blush are plenty.
7. Lace Trim Slip Dress With Cardigan

For changeable spring weather, I pair a pastel slip with lace at the hem with a cropped pointelle cardigan in the same tone. Keeping both pieces in one color family is what stops the lace from looking fussy. The cardigan should end at the waist; a longer one hides the lace and cuts the dress in half. Ballet flats in blush or a soft metallic, and a small pearl-trimmed or quilted bag. I'd wear this to a shower or a garden party.
8. Velvet Wrap Dress And Ankle Boots

When the weather turns, a velvet wrap dress in a deep jewel tone is my evening pick. Velvet catches low light and the wrap shape fits without alterations. It also crushes when you sit for long, so hang it in a steamy bathroom before you wear it. Pointed black ankle boots with a modest block heel give it some edge, with opaque black tights and a leather jacket if it's cold. A small burgundy or black bag and a berry lip stain are enough for a dinner party.
9. Gingham Dress With White Sneakers

Gingham always reads countryside, and a midi Rouje gingham dress with a fitted bodice and flared skirt leans right into it. I undercut the sweetness on purpose with clean white sneakers and a denim jacket over the shoulders. Small gingham checks are easier to wear than large ones, which can overwhelm a petite frame. A cream canvas tote and a red lip if you like contrast. Good for a market morning, a bike ride or a picnic.
10. Strapless Blue Dress With Woven Wedges

A dusty-blue strapless dress with a fitted bodice and a gentle flare needs one thing before anything else: a bodice that stays up on its own. I have clients lift their arms and sit down in the fitting room, because a strapless top that slips will ruin a whole evening. Woven espadrille wedges add height and texture. A cream clutch keeps the palette cool, and with bare shoulders, earrings take the lead, polished gold or a sculptural pair. Hair up, coral blush, and it suits a seaside wedding or a sunset dinner.
11. Floral Maxi Dress With Mid-Calf Boots

A long-sleeved floral maxi with a deep V has a bohemian side that suits autumn. Mid-calf black leather block-heel boots change its personality completely, giving it some weight. A thin cashmere turtleneck underneath works on cold days, but only if the knit is fine; anything thicker pulls at the sleeves. A cognac saddle-style crossbody, gold hoops and one ring. I'd wear it to a vineyard lunch or an October walk.
12. Cropped Cardigan Over Slip Dress

A cropped cardigan buttoned once over the bust changes the proportions of a silky floral slip completely, marking a waist where the dress has none. Pick the cardigan color out of the print rather than adding a new one. Glossy patent pointed mules sharpen the look and a neutral top-handle bag keeps it neat. Soft waves, a flick of eyeliner and a rosy lip make it a brunch date or a casual Friday at work.
13. Wrap Dress With Oversized Blazer

Throwing an oversized cream or charcoal blazer over a floral wrap midi is one of my favorite ways to make a pretty dress look serious. The contrast between soft print and straight shoulders is what does it. Choose a blazer long enough to cover the seat, so the dress shows mainly below. White leather sneakers mean you can walk in it all day, and a black shoulder bag ties the colors together. Roll the sleeves once. It works for a presentation or a day of meetings.
14. Silk Midi Dress With Pointed Flats

A champagne silk midi slip with cream pointed flats is the quietest kind of dressing up. One pale tone from shoulder to shoe lengthens the line, and the flat means you can stand all evening. Pale silk shows water marks and sweat, so I suggest a dress shield or at least a test spot for drinks. A strand of pearls or a fine gold chain, an ivory top-handle bag and a little highlighter suit a spring wedding or an engagement party.
15. Mini Gabinette Dress With Flat Sandals

The Gabinette, the label's mini version of the Gabin, is all summer. A navy and white floral print stays fresh, and flat brown sandals with a toe ring give it an earthy feel. With a mini, the bending test matters: I check that it still covers enough when you reach down to pick something up. A natural canvas bucket bag, a messy bun with a silk scrunchie, cream blush and tinted lip balm. Wear it for a park day or a casual birthday brunch.
16. Red Satin Dress And Black Accessories

A short red satin dress with thin straps and a soft cowl neckline doesn't need help making an entrance. Black strappy heeled sandals and a black mini bag give it sharp contrast. Satin shows creases from sitting, so I steam it just before leaving rather than the night before. Cat-eye sunglasses, one sculptural ring or a fine chain bracelet, a low bun and defined brows. It's my pick when an invitation says cocktail attire and you still want to feel like yourself.
17. Corset Detail Dress With Structured Blazer

A midi with corset-style seaming through the bodice already has structure, so the blazer over it plays with proportion instead of fighting it. I'd go oversized and black, open so the seaming shows down the front. Pointed black stiletto ankle boots keep the line sleek, and a small black or oxblood crossbody finishes it. Medium hoops and a soft smoky eye. It's right for a dinner date or an evening work event.
18. Off Shoulder Dress With Hoop Earrings

An off-shoulder dress in plain cream or pale blue puts all the attention on the collarbone, so the earrings carry the outfit. I go for bold gold hoops that frame the jaw. Off-shoulder necklines rely on elastic, and if it's too loose you'll spend the night hitching it up; it should hold when you raise your arms. Raffia mules and a small round straw bag keep it summery without tipping into costume. Air-dried waves suit a beach dinner or a welcome party.
19. Button Front Halter Dress With Espadrille Wedges

A button-front halter with a front slit swings as you walk, and I like it for exactly that. Espadrille wedges that tie with ribbon around the ankle lean into the retro Riviera aesthetic. Check where the slit ends when you sit; button-front skirts can open further than planned at the lowest button. A cognac woven clutch echoes the wedge without matching it exactly, and oversized round sunglasses add a seventies note. A low ponytail shows off the halter neckline at dinner on a terrace.
20. Embroidered Dress With Leather Loafers

A white cotton dress with red floral embroidery at the neck and cuffs is sweet on its own. I add black leather penny loafers and a black leather belt to make it a little preppy, and the contrast is what makes it interesting. A structured black tote keeps it polished and pearl studs or a gold knot bracelet add a small detail. Embroidered cotton puckers if ironed on the front, so press it face down on a towel. It suits a casual office day or a lunch meeting.
21. Tiered Floral Midi Dress With Flat Sandals

A tiered floral midi with a ruffled hem moves every time the wind catches it. Flat tan sandals with thin straps keep it grounded, and a large woven tote with leather handles carries everything for a day out. Tiers add volume at the hip, so if you're petite I'd look for narrow tiers that start lower on the skirt. Round tortoiseshell sunglasses, a peach lip and some bronzer. It's an outfit for a farmers' market or an outdoor wedding.
22. Vintage Print Wrap Dress With Saddle Bag

A wrap dress printed with painterly flowers in rust, olive and cream already looks vintage. I pair it with a cognac leather saddle bag worn crossbody, because the curve of the bag echoes the curve of the wrap front. Brown low block-heel ankle boots carry it into cooler weather. A silk scarf at the neck or wrist, a simple gold chain and a slim watch. It's right for a flea market afternoon or a casual dinner.
23. Knit Midi Dress With Knee High Boots

When it gets properly cold, a ribbed knit midi dress in charcoal or camel becomes the base. Square-toe black leather knee boots with a comfortable block heel go under the hem. Knit dresses stretch at the seat if hung, so I fold them in a drawer. A long cream or beige wool coat over the top, a black bag with silver hardware, dark sunglasses and a red lip for contrast. It carries you through a winter day of meetings and a museum.
24. Long Sleeve Sheer Dress With Heeled Sandals

A long-sleeved sheer dress in a dark floral or deep burgundy covers a lot while showing a little. The long sleeves balance the transparency. Decide on the layer underneath first: a matching slip in a dark shade looks deliberate, while a pale one makes the sheer fabric look cheap. Black strappy heeled sandals, a velvet clutch in a jewel tone and drop earrings with some shimmer. A smoky eye and berry lip suit a cocktail party or the theater.
25. Contrast Trim Dress With Neutral Accessories

A cream mini with black contrast trim at the neck and hem has a graphic, sixties feel. The trim frames the dress, so I keep accessories light. Black ballet flats with a small bow keep it playful, and a canvas tote with black leather straps picks up the trim. Cream shows marks quickly, so a quick spot-clean kit in the bag is worth it. Slim black sunglasses and a low ponytail suit a gallery opening or a city brunch.
Wearing a Summer Print Once It Turns Cold
Most of these dresses read as summer pieces, but I'd hate to see them packed away for six months. A few small changes carry a light floral or polka dot through autumn and into mild winter days.
- Opaque tights in a color taken from the print, usually navy, black or chocolate, rather than skin-toned sheers.
- A fine knit turtleneck or long-sleeve tee under a sleeveless or strappy dress. Keep it thin so the sleeves of the dress still sit right.
- Boots instead of sandals. Ankle boots suit knee-length dresses; knee-high boots that slip under the hem suit midis.
- A cardigan or blazer in a solid color from the print, so the dress still looks like the main piece.
Looking After Viscose and Silk
Viscose is weaker when wet, so wash it by hand in cool water, press the water out gently instead of wringing, and dry it flat or on a padded hanger. Silk slips do best hand washed too, or dry cleaned if the label says so. Steam both rather than ironing hot; a hot iron leaves shiny marks on silk and can scorch viscose.
Let the Dress Lead and Change the Shoes
A dress like this is designed to carry an outfit on its own, so most of my work is restraint: one shoe that sets the mood, a bag with texture and very little jewelry. Flats and sneakers make it daytime, heeled sandals and a velvet clutch make it evening, and a blazer or trench makes it work. Start with the dress you already own and change only the shoes for a week; you'll learn more about what suits it than from buying anything new.
