Tom and Jerry is one of the easiest pairings to style, because the whole joke lives in two colors and two shapes: a tall gray cat and a small brown mouse. Ears and a tail get you started, but what makes people laugh is the cream belly patches, the right pink inside the ears, the face paint and one chase prop each. Below are 40 ways to dress the pair, from hoodies and onesies to formal suits, sports kits and bigger group versions with Spike, Tuffy and Butch. Most start from sweatsuits, dresses or overalls you can find in a thrift shop, and I've noted where a version suits kids, families or a pet.

Matching Tom's Gray Against Jerry's Brown
The two colors carry this costume, so they're worth getting right before you buy anything else. Tom is a cool blue-gray, not a flat charcoal, and his belly, muzzle and paws are white. Jerry is a warm medium brown with a cream or tan belly and pink inside his big round ears. When I shop for a pair, I hold the two pieces side by side in daylight, because shop lighting turns gray and brown into roughly the same muddy shade.
- Choose a gray with a hint of blue for Tom. Heather gray works in a pinch, but a cooler gray separates him from Jerry better in photos.
- For Jerry's belly, pick cream or tan rather than bright white, so his patch doesn't look like a copy of Tom's.
- Line the ears in pink felt for both. It's a small detail, and it's the one people notice first at close range.
- Size matters. In the cartoon Jerry is tiny next to Tom, so if the shorter person plays Jerry, lean into it. If heights are reversed, that joke works too.
Once the colors are settled, every version below is just a different silhouette in those same two palettes.
1. Classic Tom And Jerry Couple Costume

This is the version I'd make first, because it sticks closest to the cartoon. Tom wears a blue-gray sweatsuit with a big white felt belly, gray ears lined in pink, a matching tail, white gloves, gray sneakers, a black nose and thin painted whiskers. Jerry wears warm brown with a tan belly patch, round ears, a slim brown tail and brown sneakers, plus a pink nose and fine whiskers. The props carry the story: an oversized foam cheese wedge for Jerry and a bright ball of yarn for Tom. Rehearse one chase pose before the party and the photos sort themselves out.
2. Easy Tom And Jerry Hoodie Costume

Need something comfortable enough for a long party or a trick-or-treating route? Two hoodies are the answer. Tom gets a gray hoodie and joggers with felt ears sewn to the hood, a white belly panel, a gray tail pinned at the back, white gloves and gray slip-ons. Jerry gets a brown set with round ears, a tan felt stomach and a long fabric tail, with a pink nose and brown sneakers. I sew the ears onto the hood rather than using headbands, since a hood can't slide back as you walk. A cardboard cheese slice and a small yarn bundle finish the pair, and it all comes off in seconds when the night is over.
3. Glam Tom And Jerry Costume

Two friends who want sparkle can push the pair into party territory. Tom wears a fitted gray jumpsuit with silver rhinestone accents, a white faux-fur stomach panel, crystal cat ears and a sleek gray tail, with a high ponytail, metallic gray eye makeup, silver gloves and glittery ankle boots. Jerry goes for a fitted brown jumpsuit with a champagne belly panel, jeweled round ears and bronze makeup, plus soft curls, gold gloves and brown platforms. Faux fur sheds at cut edges, so I trim the belly panel from the back of the fabric with small snips and give it a shake outdoors before stitching. Glitter-covered cheese and a sparkly yarn ball keep the cartoon in it.
4. Tom And Jerry Dress Costume

Two simple dresses turn the rivals into a cute party pair. For Tom, I take a gray T-shirt dress and sew an oval white felt panel down the front, then add a cat-ear headband, a gray tail, wrist-length white gloves, whiskers and gray sneakers or ankle boots. A teased ponytail or short gray wig gives the cat some attitude. Jerry wears a brown skater dress with a tan stomach panel, round ears, a slim tail and brown flats, and two small hair buns echo the ears. A foam cheese clutch is the prop. Bike shorts under both dresses mean nobody worries about sitting down or dancing.
5. Tom And Jerry Pajama Costume

Fleece pajamas make the pair useful for school events, house parties and cold evenings. Tom wears gray fleece pajamas with a white belly patch, fuzzy cat ears, a stuffed tail and gray slippers, and the slippers must have nonslip soles, because plain fleece soles slide on hard floors. Add tousled hair, a black nose, pale gray around the eyes and short whiskers. Jerry wears brown fleece with a tan belly, round ears, a flexible tail and brown slippers, with warm brown shading and a pink nose. A plush cheese pillow and a soft yarn ball are light enough that nobody minds carrying them for hours.
6. Tom And Jerry Onesie Costume

Onesies do most of the job for you. Tom's gray onesie needs a white stomach, pointed ears and a long tail; if it lacks them, I attach felt pieces with removable fabric tape so the onesie can go back to being pajamas afterward. Swap bulky slippers for gray sneakers outdoors. Paint a black nose, whiskers and slightly arched eyebrows, which give Tom that scheming look. Jerry's brown onesie needs a tan belly, round ears and a slender tail, with brown sneakers, warm socks and a pink nose. A yellow foam cheese wedge and a plush yarn ball finish it. The same formula fits adults, teens and older kids.
7. Tom And Jerry Tutu Costume

Tulle gives the duo a dance-friendly update. Tom wears a gray fitted top with a white belly panel, gray leggings and a full gray-and-white tutu, plus pointed ears, a curved tail, white gloves, gray ballet flats and a neat high bun. Silver eye shadow, a black nose and painted whiskers finish the cat. Jerry layers a brown-and-tan tutu over a brown top and leggings, with oversized round ears, a slim tail, brown flats and two small buns. I keep both tutus at knee length; longer tulle catches on heels and chair legs. A cheese-shaped mini bag and a yarn-ball crossbody give each of them somewhere to put a phone.
8. Tom And Jerry Overalls Costume

Overalls make a casual version you can pull together from everyday clothes. Tom wears gray denim overalls over a white long-sleeve shirt, with a gray tail at the back, cat ears above tousled hair, gray high-tops, white gloves and a black nose. Jerry wears brown overalls over a tan shirt with round ears, a thin tail, brown canvas sneakers, rosy cheeks and two tidy buns. The bib is the best spot for detail: a felt cheese patch on Jerry and a yarn-ball patch on Tom. Felt on denim holds well with a few hand stitches at each corner, so the overalls can go back in the closet afterward with the patches snipped off.
9. Tom And Jerry Skirt And Suspender Costume

Skirts and suspenders give the pair a neat, slightly vintage silhouette. Tom wears a gray pleated skirt, a white blouse, gray suspenders, white gloves and charcoal ankle boots, with pointed gray ears, a matching tail and a short gray wig or curled ponytail. Jerry wears a brown pleated skirt, a tan blouse, brown suspenders and lace-up shoes, with big round ears, two buns, rosy cheeks and a pink nose. A yellow cheese-shaped bow tie on Jerry and a yarn-ball brooch on Tom are my favorite small touches here. Knee-length skirts with opaque tights keep it family-friendly, and it suits best friends who want coordinated without theatrical.
10. Tom And Jerry Athletic Costume

Turn the chase into a sporty duo you can wear all evening. Tom dresses in a gray track jacket and joggers, white athletic gloves, gray running shoes, cat ears and a lightweight tail, with a practical ponytail or short gray wig and a felt team-style letter on the jacket. Jerry wears a brown athletic set with tan side stripes, brown sneakers, round ears and a flexible tail, with hair secured in small buns. Give each a race number of your own design rather than a real sports logo. A foam cheese medal for Jerry and a yarn-ball medal for Tom land the joke. Track fabric is slippery, so I sew tails to a felt tab rather than pinning straight through.
11. Tom And Jerry Cheerleader Costume

Cheer outfits give the pair a lot of energy in photos. Tom wears a gray-and-white long-sleeve cheer top with a knee-length pleated skirt over fitted shorts, white socks and gray sneakers, with gray ears, a soft tail, a high ponytail and silver eye makeup. Jerry wears a brown-and-tan cheer set with brown sneakers, round ears, a slim tail and two high buns. Tissue-paper pom-poms in gray, brown, white and yellow are light and cheap to make, though they shed in rain, so I'd only use them indoors. A megaphone with a yarn-ball symbol for Tom and a cheese shape for Jerry reads clearly from across the room.
12. Tom And Jerry Baseball Costume

A cartoon baseball matchup suits siblings or friends who like sport. Tom wears a gray jersey over a white shirt, matching pants, a gray cap with cat ears attached, white gloves and gray sneakers, with a stuffed tail, a black nose and gray shading around the eyes. Jerry wears a brown-and-tan jersey, brown pants, a cap with round ears and brown athletic shoes. Ears on a cap are easy: I cut two slits in the crown and push felt tabs through, then stitch them inside. Use soft props, such as a foam cheese ball and a plush yarn mitt, and invented initials instead of team logos. Breathable jerseys keep it comfortable at a warm indoor party.
13. Tom And Jerry Basketball Costume

Loose jerseys and high-tops make a comfortable basketball pair. Tom wears a gray jersey over a fitted white tee, gray shorts, white crew socks and gray high-tops, with a white belly patch on the shirt, cat ears, a tail, white wristbands, a short gray wig and whiskers. Jerry wears a brown jersey and shorts over a tan undershirt, brown high-tops and round ears, with a slender tail and two hair buns. A soft yellow foam ball painted like a cheese wheel for Jerry and a plush gray ball wrapped in yarn lines for Tom are the props. I like a personal number on the jerseys, such as the year you became friends, as a small joke between the two of you.
14. Tom And Jerry Tennis Costume

Tennis whites give the rivalry a preppy twist. Tom wears a gray polo with a white pleated skort, gray ears, a tail, white wristbands and gray court sneakers, with a sleek ponytail and subtle silver eye makeup. Jerry wears a brown polo with a tan skort, round ears, a thin tail, brown-and-white sneakers and two small buns. Cut the rackets from lightweight cardboard rather than carrying real ones; paint yarn lines on Tom's and cheese holes on Jerry's. I glue a second layer of card behind the handle, because a single sheet bends the first time someone leans on it. It's tidy enough for a school celebration and easy to walk in.
15. Tom And Jerry Bowling Costume

Retro bowling shirts are a surprisingly good base for this pair. Tom wears a gray button-front bowling shirt with white piping, charcoal trousers, gray sneakers, cat ears and a curved tail, with slicked-back hair or a short gray wig, white gloves and a small yarn-ball patch. Jerry wears a brown bowling shirt with tan piping, cropped brown trousers, round ears and brown bowling-style shoes. Names across the shirt backs make the pair look planned. Bowling shirts are often polyester, so felt letters attached with craft glue peel off; I stitch them or use iron-on letters at a low heat setting. Soft foam bowling balls painted as yarn and cheese replace heavy props.
16. Tom And Jerry Detective Costume

A detective theme gives the pair a story: the case of the missing cheese. Tom wears a gray trench coat over a white shirt and charcoal pants, with cat ears, a tail, gray loafers, white gloves, a short gray wig and a lightweight magnifying glass. Jerry wears a brown trench over a tan top and trousers, with round ears, a thin tail and lace-up shoes. Jerry carries a foam cheese wedge with a removable clue tag; Tom holds a little notebook full of yarn doodles. I'd leave both coats unbuttoned, because a closed trench hides the belly colors that tell people who you are.
17. Tom And Jerry Chef Costume

Kitchen chaos is a huge part of the cartoon, and chef outfits bring it in without making a mess. Tom wears a gray shirt and pants under a white apron with a large gray belly panel, plus cat ears, a stuffed tail, white gloves and gray nonslip sneakers. Seat the tall chef hat between the ears, not on top of them, or neither stays put. Jerry wears brown under a tan apron, with round ears, a slim tail, brown shoes and a smaller chef hat. Felt vegetables, an empty mixing bowl and foam cheese are props you can carry all night. Matching neckerchiefs in pink and yellow tie the two looks together.
18. Tom And Jerry Baker Costume

Pastel aprons make a sweeter bakery version. Tom wears gray pants and a gray shirt with a white stomach panel under a pale blue apron, with pointed ears, a tail, gray sneakers and white gloves. For the flour-dusted look, I tap a little translucent powder onto the cheeks and nose with a fluffy brush; it reads as flour in photos and doesn't make anyone sneeze the way real flour does. Jerry wears brown pants, a tan shirt and a pale yellow apron, with round ears, a flexible tail, rosy cheeks and a neat bun. A tray of felt cookies shaped like cheese and yarn balls, plus light chef caps, finish the pair. It's mild enough for a workplace party.
19. Tom And Jerry Waiter Costume

Restaurant servers give the pair a clean, tailored look. Tom wears a gray vest over a white button-down, black trousers, a gray bow tie, cat ears, a tail and gray loafers, with neat hair and white gloves. Jerry wears a brown vest over a tan shirt with cropped brown pants, a yellow bow tie, round ears and brown loafers. Each carries a lightweight tray: felt yarn balls on Tom's, foam cheese slices on Jerry's. Glue the props down with a few dots of hot glue, because a tray held all night gets tilted sooner or later. A vest also hides the waistband where the tail attaches, which makes this one of the tidiest versions.
20. Tom And Jerry Sailor Costume

Nautical stripes bring some fresh color to the gray-and-brown pair. Tom wears a gray sailor-style top with a white collar, white trousers, gray boat shoes, cat ears and a tail, plus a small sailor cap, a short gray wig and white gloves. Jerry wears a brown-and-tan striped sailor top with tan pants, brown boat shoes, round ears, a thin tail and a yellow neckerchief. A cardboard ship's wheel painted with yarn and cheese looks great in group photos, but small paper boats are much easier to carry. A sailor cap sits better pinned at an angle in front of the ears than squashed between them.
21. Tom And Jerry Beach Costume

When the night is warm and fleece feels too heavy, a beach version saves you. Tom wears a gray short-sleeve shirt with a white belly patch, gray board shorts, cat ears, a tail and supportive gray sandals, with a gray visor and a stripe of white on the cheeks that looks like zinc cream. Jerry wears a brown shirt with a tan belly panel, brown shorts, round ears, a slim tail, brown sandals and a yellow visor. A small inflatable yarn-pattern beach ball and a cheese-shaped beach bag carry the theme. Take the sunglasses off indoors, though; the whole character lives in the face paint around the eyes.
22. Tom And Jerry Vacation Tourist Costume

Tourist clothes turn the pair into a funny vacation duo. Tom wears a gray tropical-print shirt over a white tee, gray shorts, comfortable sneakers, cat ears and a stuffed tail, with a gray bucket hat and a little cardboard camera. Jerry wears a brown-and-yellow printed shirt, tan shorts, brown walking shoes, round ears, a slim tail and a straw-style sun hat. A folded paper map marked with cheese symbols and yarn-ball landmarks gives you something to point at in photos. Belt bags hold phones and keys, which is why I suggest this version for anyone walking a long route. Almost every piece can be worn again afterward.
23. Tom And Jerry Camping Costume

Outdoor layers suit Tom and Jerry's colors naturally. Tom wears a gray utility vest over a white thermal shirt, charcoal cargo pants, gray hiking shoes, pointed ears and a soft tail, with a knit cap and white gloves if it's cold. Jerry wears a brown utility vest over a tan thermal top, brown cargo pants, sturdy sneakers, round ears and a thin tail. Cut ear slits in the knit cap and Tom's ears pop through without needing a headband. Rolled felt blankets, toy binoculars and light backpacks with a cheese charm and a yarn-ball patch finish the camping theme. Reflective strips on the packs are worth adding for a walk after sunset.
24. Tom And Jerry Rainy Day Costume

Raincoats make the pair practical for unpredictable fall weather. Tom wears a gray raincoat over matching pants and gray rain boots, with cat ears on the hood, a tail fastened beneath the coat and a white stomach panel. Jerry wears a brown raincoat with a tan belly patch, brown boots and round ears on the hood. Felt soaks up water, so I cut the ears from fleece or craft foam for this one. Use water-resistant face paint for noses and whiskers and set it with powder. Clear umbrellas decorated with removable yarn and cheese shapes finish both, and breathable layers underneath stop you overheating inside the coats.
25. Tom And Jerry Winter Costume

On a properly cold night, build the costumes around coats and accessories instead of fighting the weather. Tom wears a gray puffer over charcoal pants, a white scarf standing in for the belly, cat ears sewn to a gray beanie, gloves, a tail and gray winter boots. Jerry wears a brown puffer with tan pants, a yellow scarf, round ears on a brown beanie and brown boots, with the tail hanging below the coat. Cold air and a scarf rubbing the jaw both smudge face paint, so I use a smudge-resistant formula and keep the whiskers high on the cheeks. A plush cheese hand warmer and a yarn-ball accessory add the joke, and reflective piping keeps both visible.
26. Tom And Jerry Western Costume

A Western makeover works best without any toy weapons. Tom wears a gray denim shirt, a white vest, charcoal jeans, gray cowboy-style boots, cat ears and a tail, plus a light gray hat with openings cut for the ears. Jerry wears a brown checked shirt, a tan vest, brown jeans, round ears, brown boots, a yellow neckerchief and a soft brown hat. Tom's prop is a coiled yarn lasso, which is very in character, and Jerry gets a foam cheese canteen. If real cowboy boots pinch, decorative boot covers over sneakers look the same in photos. The denim and suede textures make this version feel more styled than most.
27. Tom And Jerry Royal Costume

Velvet capes and crowns turn the chase into a cartoon royal court. Tom wears a gray tunic with a white center panel, a blue-gray cape, gray trousers, cat ears, a tail and gray boots, topped with a silver foam crown. Jerry wears a brown tunic with a tan belly panel, a gold cape, brown pants, round ears and brown ankle boots, with a smaller gold crown. A yarn-topped scepter for Tom and a cheese-shaped royal cushion for Jerry are my favorite props in the whole list. Choose lightweight costume velvet; upholstery velvet looks richer, but it's heavy and hot to wear all night. Gold trim on both outfits ties the colors together.
28. Tom And Jerry Superhero Costume

Capes and color blocking turn the rivals into a superhero team for once. Tom wears a fitted gray top with a white stomach panel, gray leggings, cat ears, a tail, gray athletic boots, a bright blue cape and a slicked-back gray wig. Jerry wears brown with a tan belly patch, round ears, a slim tail, brown high-tops and a yellow cape. Cut original foam chest emblems: a yarn ball for Tom and a cheese wedge for Jerry. Small eye masks add drama but should sit on top of the face paint, never hide it. I hem capes to mid-calf at most; anything that reaches the ankle will be stepped on.
29. Tom And Jerry Space Costume

Metallic fabric gives the pair a space-age look that keeps their colors. Tom wears a silver-gray jumpsuit with a white chest panel, cat ears built into a soft helmet band, a gray tail, white gloves and silver sneakers, with metallic eye shadow and a foam control panel covered in yarn symbols. Jerry wears a bronze-brown jumpsuit with a tan center panel, round ears, a slim tail, brown boots and gold gloves. A yellow cheese planet and a plush yarn moon are the props. Lamé and similar metallic fabrics fray fast and crease, so I'd buy the jumpsuits ready-made. Keep any clear visor pieces above the face so both of you can see and talk.
30. Tom And Jerry Robot Costume

This robot pair is a rewarding weekend DIY. Tom wears a gray sweatshirt and pants under a lightweight silver cardboard chest panel, with geometric cat ears, a segmented fabric tail, silver sneakers, white gloves and a square black nose. Jerry wears a brown sweatshirt and joggers with a bronze cardboard body panel, round mechanical ears and a flexible segmented tail. Bottle caps or painted foam circles make the controls, with yarn patterns on Tom's and cheese shapes on Jerry's. Keep the cardboard above the hip and cut arm openings wider than you think; corrugated card has sharp edges, so I cover every raw edge with duct tape before anyone wears it.
31. Tom And Jerry Skeleton Costume

Cartoon bones add a little spookiness while staying child-friendly. Tom wears a gray long-sleeve shirt and leggings decorated with white felt bones, plus the white belly panel, cat ears, a gray tail, gloves and gray sneakers. Paint black and white around the eyes, but keep Tom's nose and whiskers visible or he just becomes a skeleton. Jerry wears a brown top and leggings with tan felt bones, round ears, a thin tail and soft cream shading on the face. On stretchy leggings, I stitch the felt bones rather than glue them, since glue cracks the moment the fabric stretches. Reflective tape helps the bones show up after sunset.
32. Tom And Jerry Friendly Zombie Costume

A friendly zombie version gets the Halloween mood without blood or wounds. Tom wears a faded gray shirt with a white belly panel, patched gray pants, uneven cat ears, a bent fabric tail and scuffed gray sneakers, with pale gray makeup, soft shadows under the eyes and crooked whiskers. Jerry wears a faded brown top with a tan stomach patch, patched trousers, round ears, a slightly curled tail and tousled hair. To make new clothes look worn, I rub fine sandpaper lightly over the knees and elbows, and a couple of hot washes take the edge off the color. Mismatched socks, a frayed yarn ball and a muted yellow cheese wedge finish the joke.
33. Tom And Jerry Masquerade Costume

Masks and formalwear make a dressier version for a costume dance. Tom wears a gray suit with a white shirt, silver vest, gray loafers, cat ears and a tail, plus a small silver eye mask shaped around the ears. Jerry wears a brown suit or knee-length brown dress with tan accents, round ears, a slim tail and a gold mask. Paint the nose and whiskers below the mask line so the characters still show. Keep masks small; a big lace one cuts off your side vision on a busy dance floor. A light foam yarn-ball cane for Tom and a cheese-shaped clutch for Jerry make this feel like a pair.
34. Tom And Jerry Prom Costume

Formalwear makes the rivals look surprisingly polished. Tom wears a gray tuxedo-style jacket, white shirt, charcoal pants, silver bow tie, gray dress shoes, cat ears and a tail, with neat hair and white gloves. Jerry wears a warm brown suit or a modest brown formal dress with tan detailing, gold shoes, round ears and a thin tail, with soft curls and bronze makeup. Felt-flower wrist corsages, one shaped like a yarn ball and one like cheese, are a sweet touch. On a suit, the tail looks cleanest attached to a belt loop at the back with a hidden safety pin. Comfortable insoles make a night of dancing in dress shoes a lot easier.
35. Tom And Jerry Ballet Costume

Ballet suits the pair's exaggerated cartoon movement. Tom wears a gray long-sleeve leotard over opaque gray tights, a white belly panel, a knee-length gray tutu, cat ears and a soft tail, with nonslip gray ballet flats and a tidy bun. Jerry wears a brown leotard and tights with a tan center panel, a brown-and-gold tutu, round ears and a slim tail, with two small buns. A yarn-styled ribbon wand and a cheese-shaped dance bag are the props. Ears on a headband can fly off mid-spin, so I add a couple of bobby pins through the headband into the bun. Then go ahead and do the dramatic poses.
36. Tom And Jerry Kids Costume

For kids, comfort and simple construction come first. The child playing Tom wears a gray sweatshirt and joggers with a soft white belly, fabric cat ears, a short stuffed tail, white mittens and gray sneakers. Jerry gets a brown sweatshirt and pants, a tan belly patch, flexible round ears, a short tail and brown sneakers. Patch-test the face paint on the inner arm a day before, even if it says hypoallergenic, and keep it to a nose and three whiskers on each cheek. Skip rigid headpieces and any tail long enough to trip on. A plush cheese and a soft yarn ball are safe props, and reflective trim on the sleeves and legs helps on dark streets.
37. Tom And Jerry Sibling Costume

Siblings play the rivalry better than anyone. The Tom sibling wears gray overalls over a white shirt with cat ears, a tail, white gloves and gray sneakers, plus spiky hair or a short gray wig. The Jerry sibling wears brown overalls over a tan shirt with round ears, a slim tail and brown sneakers, with long hair in two buns or short hair neatly combed. A plush yarn ball and an oversized foam cheese slice give them something to fight over. Handheld speech-bubble signs with friendly phrases are great for photos. I'd keep them on sticks rather than on strings round the neck, so nothing tangles while they run.
38. Tom And Jerry Family Costume

A family costume can grow past the main duo by adding Spike and Tuffy. One adult plays Tom in gray with a white belly, cat ears, a tail, gloves and gray sneakers, and another plays Jerry in brown with a tan belly, round ears, a pink nose and brown shoes. A third person can be Spike, the bulldog, in a gray or beige sweatsuit with floppy ears, a big collar and sturdy sneakers. The littlest becomes Tuffy, the small gray mouse, in a light gray outfit with round ears and a costume diaper worn over leggings. Spike's floppy ears look best cut from fleece, which hangs heavier than felt. Foam cheese, yarn balls and a plush bone link everyone.
39. Tom And Jerry Group Costume

A larger friend group can pull in Tom, Jerry, Tuffy, Spike, Butch and Toodles Galore. Tom wears gray with a white belly and Jerry wears brown and tan. Tuffy needs a pale gray mouse outfit with oversized ears and a baby bib, and Spike wears gray or beige with floppy ears and a collar. Butch is a black cat jumpsuit with a white stomach, pointed ears and black sneakers, while Toodles wears a soft white cat dress or jumpsuit with pink accents, curled hair and white shoes. When a group has two cats, I give each a different ear shape so they don't blur together in photos. Matching fabric textures help six characters look like one plan.
40. Tom And Jerry Pet And Owner Costume

A calm pet can join in by playing the other character. If you dress as Tom in a gray sweatshirt and pants with a white belly, ears, a tail and a black nose, your dog becomes Jerry with a light brown harness cover, a tan chest panel, soft round ears and a small yellow cheese charm. Or flip it: you're Jerry in brown and the pet wears a gray Tom-style harness. Never put human makeup on an animal or add a tail that restricts movement. I build pet pieces on the harness the animal already wears, because a familiar fit causes far less fuss. Skip tight hats and noisy bits, practice at home, and take it off the moment your pet looks unhappy.
Ears That Stand Up and Tails That Don't Drag
Almost every costume here depends on two ears and a tail, and they're the parts that fail first. Here's how I make them so they survive a whole evening.
Tom's pointed ears
Cut two triangles of gray felt for the outside and two slightly smaller pink ones for the inside. Sandwich a layer of stiff interfacing or thin craft foam between them and stitch around the edge. Leave a tab at the base and sew or glue it around a plain headband, or stitch it straight to a hood or beanie.
Jerry's big round ears
Jerry's ears are large for his head, so floppy felt won't do. I cut two circles from craft foam, cover each side in brown and pink felt, and leave a flat base that wraps around the headband. Foam keeps the round shape without wire and is light enough not to tip the headband forward.
Tails
Sew a tube of fabric, stuff it lightly and close the end. For Tom's curved tail, slip a length of garden wire or a pipe cleaner chain inside before stuffing, with the cut ends taped over. Attach either tail to a felt tab with two buttonholes and thread your belt through it. Safety pins straight through stretch fabric tear holes by the end of the night. Then test the length: sit down in a chair, and if the tail touches the floor, shorten it.
Play the Chase, Not Just the Colors
One cartoon pair can stretch from a pair of hoodies to tuxedos, team kits and a six-person group. Start with the colors: blue-gray and white for Tom, brown, tan and pink for Jerry. Then add ears that stay put, a tail that doesn't drag, simple face paint, shoes you can walk in and one light prop each. That's honestly all the cartoon needs. Couples get the central rivalry, while siblings, families and pet owners can spread it across more characters. Keep the layers breathable and the faces visible, and spend five minutes practicing your chase pose. That pose is what gets the laugh.
