A long trench is the coat I reach for between seasons, and it's at its best over a skirt. Trousers stop at the ankle; a skirt lets the coat's length do something, whether that's framing a mini or sitting just above a maxi. Below are thirty full outfits, from mini to maxi and from satin to suede, for coffee runs through to evening plans. Most use pieces already in a working closet. The one thing I'd ask you to watch throughout is where the coat's hem lands against the skirt's hem, because that single line decides whether an outfit looks planned or accidental.

Matching the Coat's Hem to the Skirt Underneath
A long trench usually ends somewhere between the knee and mid-calf. The skirt you wear under it either works with that line or fights it. These are the rules I follow when I fit a client in front of a mirror:
- Mini skirts: almost anything works, because the coat is clearly the longer layer. Wear it open so the skirt and leg show as a single block.
- Knee-length and pencil skirts: fine with a mid-calf coat. If the two hems sit within an inch or two of each other, it looks like a mistake, so change one of them.
- Midi skirts: best when the skirt shows a few inches below the coat, or when the coat clearly covers it. Avoid hems that end level with each other.
- Maxi skirts: choose a coat at least a few inches shorter than the skirt. Two floor-length hems moving at once look heavy.
The belt matters too. Belted, the coat becomes the outfit and the skirt is just a hem. Open, with the belt knotted at the back, the skirt becomes the star. I decide which one I want before I pick the shoes.
1. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Pencil Skirt

Beige trench, open, over a high-waist black pencil skirt: about as dependable as office dressing gets. Tuck in a white button-down or a light cashmere crewneck so the top stays flat under the coat. Black pointed pumps lengthen the leg, and a slim belt on the skirt plus a structured tote finish it. A pencil skirt that hits just below the knee looks right with a mid-calf trench; a shorter one starts to look as though it's hiding. On colder days, swap to sleek ankle boots and sheer black tights.
2. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Pleated Midi Skirt

Camel trench over a blush pleated midi is soft without going sugary. Since the pleats already add volume, keep the top fitted: a fine-knit sweater or a tucked tee. Nude pointed ankle boots keep the line long. I let the coat hang open here, because belting a trench over pleats crushes them at the waist and the skirt loses its swing. A tonal crossbody and a fine pendant work for brunch or a bridal shower, and ballet flats take over when it warms up.
3. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

Khaki trench over a champagne satin bias-cut midi is the high-low pairing I like most. Leave the coat fully unbuttoned so the satin shows as you walk; buttoned, it just looks like a coat with something underneath. A black bodysuit or fine turtleneck keeps the top smooth. Metallic strappy sandals and a small top-handle bag make it evening wear. Bias-cut satin shows every line beneath it, so a smooth slip or no-line shapewear is worth the extra minute.
4. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Mini Skirt And Knee High Boots

Double-breasted camel trench, black mini, knee-high boots. This one shows up on every street-style feed for good reason. Choose a ponte or woven high-waist mini and a slim black turtleneck so you get one dark column under the coat. Flat or low block-heel boots keep it walkable. I check the gap between skirt hem and boot top: about a hand's width of leg or tights looks deliberate, while a large gap breaks the line. Drape the coat over your shoulders, add sunglasses and a shoulder bag, and add opaque tights when it gets cold.
5. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Denim Maxi Skirt

A light-wash denim maxi under a beige trench feels very current. Pick a front-slit or button-through skirt so you can stride, and tuck in a white tank or striped long-sleeve tee. Slim white leather sneakers keep it casual. Denim maxis are heavy, so I'd skip a very long trench here; the two hems compete. A coat that ends a few inches above the skirt's hem looks better. Add a woven crossbody and gold hoops for the farmers' market or a travel day.
6. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Leather Mini Skirt

A black leather mini under an oversized trench brings some edge to a classic coat. A soft gray cashmere sweater or white tee adds a third texture between the crisp cotton and the leather. Chunky combat boots or lug-sole loafers balance the weight of the coat. One silver chain, small hoops and a black crossbody are plenty. Faux leather sticks to bare legs when it's warm and creaks when it's cold, so real leather or a well-made faux with a woven backing is worth hunting for.
7. Long Trench Coat Outfit With A-Line Skirt

A midi A-line skirt in cream, tan or olive under a camel trench suits nearly every figure. The flare offsets the straight coat, and a tucked fine-gauge sweater or sleeveless blouse marks the waist without bulk. Neutral ballet flats, a leather satchel and a silk scarf finish it. The A-line should start flaring at the hip, not the waist, or it adds width where most people don't want it. Swap to low block heels for something a little dressier.
8. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Floral Midi Skirt

A dark floral midi turns a summer skirt into a fall one the moment a beige trench goes over it. Look for burgundy, navy or deep green blooms. A black fitted long-sleeve tee or bodysuit lets the print lead, and black pointed suede ankle boots plus a small structured bag complete it. Tie the belt loosely behind your back rather than at the front: the coat stays open, the floral shows, and the back still has some shape.
9. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Plaid Mini Skirt

A wool plaid mini skirt in tartan with a long khaki trench gives you a campus feel without looking like a uniform. Tuck in a black turtleneck or a cable-knit, add sheer black tights, and finish with chunky platform loafers or knee-high boots. If you go for the cable-knit, make it a finer one; a thick sweater tucked into a mini adds bulk at the hip that the trench then exaggerates. A satchel and tortoiseshell clips make it right for campus days or a holiday get-together.
10. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Tulle Midi Skirt

A black tulle midi skirt under a beige trench mixes structure with something lighter. Let the tulle peek below the coat. Keep the top plain, a black bodysuit or fitted cashmere, and wear pointed black heels or stiletto ankle boots to lengthen everything. A small embellished clutch makes it party-ready. Tulle snags on velcro, rough bag hardware and some coat linings, so I check what's rubbing against it before heading out.
11. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Wrap Skirt

A silk or cotton wrap skirt in a warm neutral, cut to mid-calf, is an easy partner for a long trench. A tucked fine-knit tank or short-sleeve cashmere sweater sits flat under the wrap's tie. Wear flat leather sandals or low espadrilles in warm months and heeled ankle boots when it cools. The wrap skirt's one weakness is wind: it opens at the overlap, so I add a small snap or safety pin inside if you'll be outdoors a lot. A leather tote and gold bracelet keep it simple.
12. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Slip Skirt

A silky slip skirt in a jewel tone or champagne under a classic beige trench sits nicely between relaxed and dressed. The fluid skirt plays against the crisp gabardine. Tuck in a white ribbed tank or a light cashmere crewneck and add heeled mules or strappy sandals. A neutral shoulder bag and drop earrings finish it. For a workday that runs into the evening, start in flats, then switch shoes and add a bold lip. A static guard spray stops the skirt clinging to tights.
13. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Knit Midi Skirt

A ribbed knit midi in camel, charcoal or cream under a long trench is a warm, grown-up winter outfit. A matching or tonal turtleneck gives a one-color base that lengthens you. Tall block-heel boots slide under the hem, and a long wool scarf over the coat adds warmth. Rib knit midis can seat out at the back after a day of sitting, so hang them between wears rather than folding them over a chair. A structured bag and gold jewelry finish it for winter lunches or holiday shopping.
14. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Cargo Mini Skirt

An olive or khaki cargo mini under a tan trench mixes utility with polish. The pockets and hardware give the classic coat some street edge. Tuck in a white baby tee or slim rib tank and lace up mid-calf lug boots for weight at the bottom. A black shoulder bag and silver jewelry keep it cool. I'd keep the cargo pockets mostly empty; anything bulky in them shows straight through the open front of the coat.
15. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Sequin Midi Skirt

A champagne or gold sequin midi under a beige trench is my favorite way to take sequins from day into night. The coat tones the sparkle down enough for dinner or a holiday party. A black silk camisole or fitted cashmere sweater stays quiet, black stilettos and a small metallic clutch finish it, and a clean updo keeps the neckline open. Sequins can catch on a trench's lining, so I wear the coat draped over the shoulders on arrival, then take it off.
16. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Suede Mini Skirt

A suede mini in cognac, chocolate or olive under a long trench is about texture: soft nap against smooth cotton or wool. A cream cable-knit or fitted turtleneck keeps the palette tonal, knee-high boots in suede or leather continue it, and a slouchy suede hobo bag ties it up. Gold hoops and a berry lip finish the look for an apple-picking weekend. Spray the skirt with a suede protector before you wear it, because suede darkens and stiffens when it gets wet and a trench won't fully cover it.
17. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Silk Midi Skirt

A pure silk midi in ivory, blush or dove gray gives a long trench a quiet, rich look. Silk catches light as you move. A sleeveless silk shell or fitted cashmere tee and kitten-heel strappy sandals keep it delicate, and a small top-handle bag with pearl studs completes it for a bridal lunch or a milestone event. Silk water-spots, so I'd keep a pale silk skirt for dry days and leave it home when rain is forecast.
18. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Bubble Hem Skirt

A sculptural bubble hem mini skirt under a long, straight trench looks editorial but is easy to wear. The rounded skirt plays against the lean coat. Keep the top slim, a black turtleneck or bodysuit, and add sleek platform ankle boots and a dark mini bag. A bubble hem adds width at the thigh, so it's kinder to straighter or slimmer hips; if you carry weight there, a tulip hem gives a similar shape with less volume.
19. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Maxi Skirt

A flowing maxi in a soft neutral or earthy tone under a long trench makes one long, graceful column. Choose cotton poplin or crepe that moves when you walk. A fitted tank or short-sleeve knit tucked in marks the waist. Wedge espadrilles or heeled sandals add height, and a woven tote and layered gold necklaces warm it up. With a maxi, I'd always choose a trench that stops at least a few inches shorter than the skirt, so the two hems don't fight.
20. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Asymmetrical Midi Skirt

An asymmetrical midi with a high-low hem or a draped front panel brings a sharper, more architectural line. The angled hem pulls the eye down and makes the leg look longer. Keep the top plain, a black bodysuit or fitted long-sleeve tee, and choose block-heel mules or sculptural sandals. A structured shoulder bag in a contrasting texture finishes it. Asymmetric hems clash with a belted trench, so leave the coat open and the belt tied behind.
21. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Sweater Skirt

A matching knit skirt and top under a long trench is comfort that still looks finished. Pick cashmere or fine wool in cream, camel or heathered gray. Slide into tall leather riding boots or pointed ankle boots in a matching neutral, then add a structured top-handle bag. The skirt should have some weight to it; a thin knit clings to the lining of the coat and rides up as you walk. Great for travel days and relaxed offices.
22. Long Trench Coat Outfit With White Eyelet Skirt

A white cotton eyelet midi under a long khaki trench is spring in two pieces. The tiny cutouts add detail without fuss. Tuck in a white tank or a light chambray shirt, then add tan sandals or canvas espadrilles and a woven straw bag. Eyelet needs a lining or a slip under it in strong sun, or the holes show more than you'd like. Tortoiseshell sunglasses and pearl studs keep it classic for a garden party.
23. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Leather Pencil Skirt

A black leather pencil skirt under a beige trench feels strong and modern. At midi or knee length it's still fine for most offices. Tuck in an ivory or champagne silk blouse and wear neutral pointed stilettos, with a structured black bag and silver jewelry. For evening, change the blouse for a sheer top. Leather pencil skirts need a back vent or slit to walk freely, so check for one before you buy, because a skirt you have to shuffle in will hold you back.
24. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Corduroy Mini Skirt

A wide-wale corduroy mini in rust, olive or camel under a long trench brings texture and a retro feel to fall. Tuck in a cream fisherman sweater or chunky turtleneck, add opaque tights and dark brown Chelsea boots, and finish with a suede crossbody. Wide-wale cord is thick, so I'd tuck only the front of a chunky sweater to keep the waist from swelling. It works for leaf-peeping, flea markets or coffee.
25. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Satin Slip Skirt

A satin slip skirt in oyster, mocha or dusty lavender under a long trench gives you an understated evening look that isn't a dress. Tuck in a matching satin camisole or a fine-gauge knit, then add kitten-heel sandals with thin ankle straps. A small beaded clutch and pearl drops take it to cocktail level for an anniversary dinner. Thin satin creases where you sit, so a quick steam before you leave helps more than you'd think.
26. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Pleated Tennis Skirt

A white pleated tennis skirt with a long, oversized trench is preppy meets street. Tuck in a white fitted tee or a navy striped long-sleeve, then add crew socks pulled up and chunky retro sneakers. A cap and canvas tote make it weekend wear. The long coat is what keeps the sporty pieces from looking like gym clothes. Tennis skirts are very short, so wearing a pair of bike shorts or built-in shorts underneath is the comfortable choice for a breezy day.
27. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Linen Midi Skirt

A relaxed linen midi in a sandy tone under a lightweight long trench is my warm-weather formula. Linen wrinkles, and that's part of the point. Tuck in a sleeveless tank or a short-sleeve linen button-down. Flat leather slides or woven sandals, a big straw tote, a wide-brim hat and sunglasses take it to vacation dinners. For hot weather, look for an unlined cotton trench; a lined one turns into a sauna by the time the evening breeze arrives.
28. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Metallic Pleated Skirt

A metallic pleated midi in silver, rose gold or bronze under a beige trench mixes shine with something calm. A black turtleneck or fitted cashmere sweater gives a matte base so the skirt shines. Black stiletto ankle boots and a small leather clutch finish it for holiday parties, New Year celebrations or any festive night. Metallic pleats crush if packed or sat on for hours, so hang the skirt and keep it out of a tight bag. The coat comes off once the party starts.
29. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Tweed Mini Skirt

A tweed mini in black-and-white or colorful bouclé under a long trench looks polished and Parisian. The nubby weave adds weight to the short length. Tuck in a white silk blouse or a light cashmere crewneck, add sheer black tights and block-heel Mary Janes, then finish with a quilted chain bag and pearl studs. Bouclé snags on rings and bag clasps, so I'd keep chunky rings off for the day. It's a good outfit for afternoon tea.
30. Long Trench Coat Outfit With Full Circle Skirt

A full circle midi in a solid or subtle print under a long trench is the most romantic look here. The skirt's sweep adds movement, and the coat anchors it. A fitted bodysuit or tucked silk camisole keeps the waist defined. Heeled sandals with thin ankle straps, a small top-handle bag and pearl or crystal drops finish it for an engagement party. Circle skirts lift in wind, so a slip or a weighted hem is worth having on an outdoor day.
A Long Trench on a Petite Frame
A long trench can swamp anyone under about 5'4", but it doesn't have to. I start with the shoulder seam, which should sit on your shoulder bone, not past it. Oversized cuts add width and visually cut height, so petite clients do better in a regular fit.
Then look at length. On a shorter frame, a coat that ends just below the knee reads as long without cutting you off at the widest part of the calf. Shortening a trench is a fair job for a good tailor, though the belt loops and back vent need moving too, so ask before you buy. Under it, a column of one color, such as black top, black skirt and black tights, lets the coat look intentional instead of taking over.
Gabardine, Rain and Keeping the Coat Looking New
Classic trenches are made from cotton gabardine, a tightly woven twill that sheds light rain well. It's water-resistant, not waterproof: a long downpour will eventually soak through the shoulders. Wool-blend trenches are warmer but tolerate rain less well, and they need a dry cleaner when they get dirty.
- Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger. A wire hanger pushes bumps into the shoulders that are hard to press out.
- Let a wet coat dry at room temperature before you hang it in a closet, and keep it away from a radiator, which can stiffen the cotton and shrink the lining.
- Spot-clean collar and cuffs first; they collect makeup and skin oil long before the rest of the coat needs washing.
- Check the care label before machine washing. Many cotton trenches can be cleaned at home on a gentle cycle, but a structured one often comes out puckered at the seams.
One Coat, Thirty Skirts and the Hemline Between Them
One long trench really can give you dozens of outfits just by changing the skirt underneath. It goes from a pencil skirt at the office to playful tulle and sequin styles for evening. What holds them all together is proportion: wear the coat open or belted depending on the skirt, and keep an eye on where its hem lands against yours. If I were building this into a closet from scratch, I'd start with one neutral midi and one dark mini, wear them both under the trench for a few weeks, and only add a statement skirt once those two have earned their place.
