A shirt dress has the collar, cuffs and button placket of a tailored shirt, but you put it on in one go. That combination is why I lean on it in almost every season: it can be belted, layered over trousers, worn open as a long jacket or dressed down with sneakers. Most people own one and only ever wear it with a belt and sandals. The thirty looks below go further, from sneakers and tote bags to layered necklaces and knee-high boots, and each one says what I'd pair with it for errands, an office day or a warm-weather trip.

Button Gaps, Belt Height and Hem Length on Your Frame
Before styling any of these looks, I check three fit points, because a shirt dress is cut like a shirt and has the same weak spots.
The Gap Between the Bust Buttons
If the placket pulls open between buttons when you sit or reach, the dress is tight across the bust. You can size up and belt the waist, or sew a small hidden snap between the buttons that gape. Fashion tape works for a day out, but I wouldn't rely on it for a long one.
Where the Belt Should Sit
Find your natural waist, the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button. If you're short-waisted, a belt slightly above that point lengthens the leg; if you're long-waisted, a belt a touch lower keeps the top half from looking stretched. Skip the belt entirely when the dress has a sewn-in waist seam that sits in a different place, since two waist lines at different heights look messy.
Hem Length for Petite and Tall Women
On petite frames, a hem just above or at the knee shows the most leg, and a midi that ends at mid-calf can cut the line. Tall women can carry midi and maxi lengths easily but should check the waist seam lands at their waist, as many shirt dresses are cut for an average torso length.
1. Shirt Dress With Sneakers And Tote Bag

An oversized cotton shirt dress, white low-top sneakers and a slouchy canvas tote is my Saturday outfit when comfort comes first. Keep the dress in khaki, navy or soft olive so it goes with everything. Roll the sleeves twice and open a couple of top buttons for an easy, borrowed-from-a-boyfriend feel. A leather watch and slim sunglasses are plenty. Oversized cuts can look shapeless from the side, so I check that the hem is longer at the back than the front, which most good shirt dresses are.
2. Shirt Dress With Belt And Sandals

A belt changes a shirt dress from loose to shaped in one move. A midi in cotton poplin or linen, a slim leather belt at the narrowest point of your waist, and thin-strap flat sandals in a neutral keep the leg line long. A woven straw bag and small gold hoops are enough. Pull the fabric evenly above the belt so it blouses a little all the way round; if it bunches only at the front, the belt is sitting too low.
3. Shirt Dress With Ankle Boots

A knee-length shirt dress with sleek black ankle boots is one of the most reliable autumn outfits I know. Rust, olive or charcoal suit the season, and opaque tights let you wear it when the air turns cold. A structured crossbody and small studs keep it plain. The boot should hit just above the ankle bone; a taller shaft that stops mid-calf meets the tights at the widest part of the leg and shortens it.
4. Shirt Dress Layered Over Trousers

Worn open over trousers, a shirt dress turns into a long, light coat. Straight or wide-leg trousers in a neutral, a fitted tank or slim tee underneath, and the dress left unbuttoned from the waist down. Pointed flats or low block heels and a structured shoulder bag finish it for a creative office or a gallery evening. This only works if the dress fabric is crisp; a soft, drapey dress layered over trousers just looks like you forgot to button it.
5. Shirt Dress With Knee High Boots

Knee-high boots are how I take a shirt dress into winter. Pick a dress that ends just above the knee so only a sliver of leg shows above the boot shaft, then add flat or low-heeled riding boots and a slim turtleneck underneath for warmth. A long wool coat and a leather tote finish it. If you have fuller calves, check the boot's shaft circumference before buying, because many standard boots are cut narrow and gape or won't zip.
6. Shirt Dress With Blazer And Heels

A single-breasted blazer over a beige, cream or pinstripe shirt dress pulls it into the office. Pointed heels lengthen the leg, and a slim belt helps if the dress is loose. A structured tote or chain shoulder bag fits the tone. I'd choose a blazer that ends at or just below the hip; a long boyfriend blazer over a knee-length dress leaves too little dress showing and looks unbalanced.
7. Oversized Shirt Dress With Cycling Shorts

A boxy, knee-length poplin shirt dress worn completely open over a white tank and black bike shorts gives volume over a fitted base. Chunky dad sneakers, a cap and a mini shoulder bag finish the sporty side. It's the summer city outfit for long walks. The open dress catches wind like a sail, so on breezy days I tie the two front panels loosely at the waist.
8. White Shirt Dress With Denim Jacket

White shirt dress, blue denim jacket: a pairing I've never seen fail. Pick a knee or mini length and a cropped or fitted jacket, roll the jacket sleeves once, and add white sneakers or flat espadrilles, tortoiseshell sunglasses and a canvas tote. Check that the jacket stops at or above your waist; a long denim jacket over a short dress covers most of it and turns the look boxy.
9. Shirt Dress With Tights And Ankle Boots

Opaque black tights carry a shirt dress well into winter. I'd pick a heavier dress fabric here, corduroy or a wool blend, so it hangs properly over thick tights instead of clinging. Sleek block-heel ankle boots add height, a long wool coat goes over the shoulders, and a black leather belt and simple crossbody keep it dark. Wool-blend shirt dresses can itch at the collar, so a fine cotton camisole under it helps on sensitive skin.
10. Shirt Dress With Strappy Sandals

In summer I wear a fluid midi or maxi shirt dress in crepe or light cotton with barely-there strappy sandals. Flat or low heels in metallic or nude keep the leg line clean, and a raffia clutch and big sunglasses set the holiday mood. It's my pick for a rooftop dinner or a walk through a seaside town. Thin straps rub on new sandals, so I wear them around the house for a few evenings before a trip.
11. Denim Shirt Dress With Sneakers

A relaxed denim shirt dress with white leather sneakers is a weekend uniform that never feels sloppy. Roll the sleeves, add a brown leather belt at the waist, a few simple gold chains and a warm-toned crossbody. Denim shirt dresses are often stiff when new, and I wash them once before wearing so the collar softens and lies flat instead of standing up at the back.
12. Striped Shirt Dress With Loafers

Stripes in blue and white or black and cream already make the outfit, so a striped shirt dress needs very little else. Leather penny loafers, worn sockless when it's warm or with sheer ankle socks when it's cooler, a tan satchel or bucket bag and a thin gold chain. A low bun keeps the collar visible. I'd look for vertical stripes on a fuller figure; horizontal stripes on a shirt dress run across the bust and hip at the same time.
13. Satin Shirt Dress With Heels

A satin shirt dress is the evening dress for people who don't like fuss. The sheen catches light on its own, so a midi in champagne, emerald or deep navy needs only minimal heeled sandals, a fine chain bracelet and small drops. A compact clutch in velvet or beads adds a contrasting texture. Satin shows every water mark and every line underneath, so I steam it rather than iron it and choose smooth, no-line underwear before anything else.
14. Shirt Dress With Cardigan And Flats

A long, lightweight cardigan left open over a shirt dress softens all the crisp lines. Oatmeal, blush or soft gray knits with ballet flats or simple slip-ons make it a comfortable office or weekend outfit, and a thin belt over the dress, under the cardigan, keeps a waist. A medium tote finishes it. The cardigan should end below the hip or at the dress hem; one that stops mid-thigh cuts the length awkwardly.
15. Shirt Dress With Leather Jacket

A leather jacket gives a shirt dress some edge. Choose a black moto-style jacket over a neutral or subtly patterned dress, then black ankle boots or chunky combat boots and a crossbody. Open the top of the dress and add a pendant to draw the eye up. Moto jackets are short and fitted, so I keep the dress at knee length or shorter; a long midi under a cropped moto loses the waist entirely.
16. Shirt Dress With Trench Coat

A beige trench hanging open over a neutral shirt dress is the outfit for weather that changes every hour. Knee or midi length both work, with leather sneakers or low block heels depending on the day. A silk scarf at the neck or on the bag handle adds a small finish. Make sure the trench is longer than the dress, even by a few inches; a dress hem peeking out below a trench looks like a slip showing.
17. Shirt Dress With Bomber Jacket

A satin or nylon bomber in olive, navy or black over a cotton or chambray shirt dress mixes sporty and tailored in a way I find easy to wear. White sneakers, a cap or beanie and a mini backpack keep it casual for travel or campus days. Bombers have a ribbed hem that sits at the waist, which gives a natural cinch, so I skip the belt here.
18. Shirt Dress With Cowboy Boots

A shirt dress with cowboy boots is the gentlest way into western style. A denim or plaid dress in midi or mini length, tan or brown boots, and a wide belt with a statement buckle shape it. Keep jewelry simple, a bolo-style necklace or turquoise earrings, and finish with a suede crossbody. The gap between hem and boot top matters: I like a few inches of leg showing, because a midi that touches the boot shaft makes the leg look short.
19. Shirt Dress With Gladiator Sandals

Flat gladiator sandals laced to the ankle or mid-calf with a light, earthy shirt dress give a bohemian summer look. A wide-brim felt hat, a slouchy suede hobo bag, layered necklaces and thin bracelets add detail. I'd be cautious with the tall lace-ups on shorter legs; the straps break up the calf, so ankle-height gladiators suit petite frames better.
20. Shirt Dress With Statement Necklace

A solid shirt dress in navy, black or charcoal is the best backdrop for one bold necklace, such as a bib, a sculptural collar or a heavy beaded piece sitting flush at the neckline. Nude heels or flats and a clean clutch keep the focus up top. Close the dress to the second button so the necklace sits on fabric instead of sliding inside the collar, which is the most common problem with this look.
21. Shirt Dress With Layered Necklaces

Several fine necklaces layered over an unbuttoned shirt dress collar feel more personal than one big piece. Open the top two or three buttons to frame them, then mix a thin herringbone chain, a small pendant and a beaded strand at different lengths. Flat sandals or sneakers and a relaxed tote keep it daytime. Space each chain about an inch apart, and they won't tangle every time you move.
22. Shirt Dress With Scarf As A Belt

A silk scarf threaded through the belt loops instead of a belt adds a stripe of color right at the waist. A red print on a white or navy dress is the classic version. Espadrilles or flat sandals and a woven straw bag make it a resort outfit. Fold the scarf into a narrow band before threading it, and tie a flat knot at the side; a bulky bow at the front adds width where you least want it.
23. Shirt Dress With Straw Hat And Sandals

Linen or cotton voile, a wide-brim straw hat with a soft ribbon, flat leather sandals and a woven beach tote: this is my seaside lunch outfit. Big sunglasses and a tinted lip balm finish it. Voile is sheer in strong sun, so I check it against a bright window and add a slip in a skin-tone shade if needed.
24. Shirt Dress With Cropped Sweater

A boxy cropped sweater over a shirt dress turns the dress into a skirt with a collar peeking out. Use a solid waist-length knit, let the collar and hem show, then add sheer tights and ankle boots in cool weather or bare legs and ballet flats when it's mild. A structured top-handle bag and small hoops finish it. The sweater must end at your natural waist or slightly above; any lower and the dress fabric bunches underneath.
25. Linen Shirt Dress With Espadrilles

Linen breathes well in heat and looks good a little rumpled, which is why a linen shirt dress with espadrilles is my default warm-weather outfit. White, cream or soft blue with canvas wedges or flat tie-up espadrilles, a woven leather tote and a thin gold anklet. Linen creases most at the seat and the elbows, so I accept those creases and avoid sitting on a damp bench or chair.
26. Floral Shirt Dress With Wedges

A small-scale floral shirt dress with cork or espadrille wedges gives height without the wobble of a stiletto, especially on grass. A fine pendant, a rattan bag and a soft scarf or headband in the hair keep it soft and pretty. It suits bridal showers and garden parties. Wedges are the shoe I recommend for outdoor events because they spread your weight and don't sink into a lawn.
27. Plaid Shirt Dress With Ankle Boots

A plaid or checked shirt dress in buffalo check or muted tartan with brown leather ankle boots feels right for autumn. A chunky beanie, a wool-blend scarf and a leather backpack or slouchy hobo bag keep it casual for an orchard trip or a farm market. Large buffalo checks add visual width, so on a petite frame I'd choose a smaller tartan.
28. Shirt Dress With Leggings And Flats

A mid-thigh or knee-length shirt dress over black or charcoal leggings with ballet flats is an easy travel and school-run outfit. Check that the back covers the seat fully when you bend. A long pendant adds a vertical line, and a soft scarf and roomy crossbody make it practical. Matte leggings look more polished here than shiny ones, which show every bump through a thin dress.
29. Shirt Dress With Crossbody Bag And Sneakers

A solid or fine-stripe shirt dress, a sleek crossbody and clean white sneakers make the hands-free outfit for a busy day. Let the bag bring texture, pebbled leather, suede or woven fabric, and add slim sunglasses and a thin watch. I adjust the crossbody strap so the bag sits at the hip, not the thigh; a long strap drags the dress fabric down on one side.
30. Shirt Dress Evening Outfit With Heels

For night, swap the flats for sleek stilettos and treat the shirt dress like evening wear. A jewel tone or black, a metallic belt at the waist, a beaded clutch or velvet bag and statement drop earrings. Keep the cuffs buttoned and the collar pressed so it reads sharp rather than daytime. Polished accessories carry the whole change here, so I don't add a second statement piece around the neck.
Poplin, Linen, Denim and Satin Each Behave Differently
The fabric decides which outfits a shirt dress can join, so I look at it before planning anything.
- Cotton poplin: crisp, holds a collar, layers well under blazers and over trousers. It wrinkles at the waist when belted, so I press it while slightly damp.
- Linen: cool in heat and fine to wear rumpled, but it creases within minutes of sitting. Best for summer looks with sandals and espadrilles.
- Denim and chambray: tough and casual, softer after a few washes. Heavy denim is too stiff to belt neatly, so wear it loose or with a wide belt.
- Satin and silky crepe: for evening only. It shows water marks and underwear lines, and needs steaming rather than a hot iron.
- Corduroy and wool blends: the winter options. They hang well over tights and under coats, and need a lint brush more than an iron.
If you can only own one, I'd choose a mid-weight cotton in a neutral. It handles sneakers, boots, a blazer and a cardigan, which covers more of this list than any other fabric.
One Shirt Dress, Four Seasons of Outfits
A shirt dress fits around your life rather than the other way round. Sneakers ground it, a blazer sharpens it, strappy sandals soften it, and tights and boots take it through winter without losing the structure that makes it look neat. Most of these outfits use things you probably own already. I'd start with the two or three that match your week, check the belt placement on your own body, and build from there.
