Most of us own more T-shirts than we wear, and the ones they skip usually aren't bad tees. They're tees that never got a proper partner. A good one deserves better than the basics drawer, because it can carry a work outfit, a travel day or a skirt you thought was too dressy for everyday. What decides it is contrast and proportion: a white tee looks sharper next to pressed trousers, a graphic tee looks more grown-up under a blazer, and an oversized tee needs something fitted below it. Below are the twenty pairings I actually use, with what I check on each one before it leaves the house.

Judging a Tee by Its Collar, Weight and Seams
Before I style a T-shirt, I check four things, and most tees fail at least one of them. None of these needs a label or a price tag to work out; you can test them in a fitting room or against your own drawer.
- Opacity: hold the tee up to a window. If you can see your hand clearly through a white tee, it will show your bra in daylight.
- Collar recovery: gently stretch the neckband and let go. A good rib snaps back; a weak one stays wavy, and that wavy collar is what makes a tee look old.
- Shoulder seam: on a fitted tee, the seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder bone. On an oversized tee it should drop deliberately, a few inches down the arm, not halfway.
- Side seams: look at a tee that's been washed a few times. If the side seams have twisted toward the front, the fabric was cut off-grain and it will keep doing that.
Fiber matters too. Pure cotton breathes and softens with washing but can shrink in length. A little elastane keeps a fitted tee close to the body, though it holds onto odor more. Linen-blend and slub tees look relaxed and textured, which suits shorts and linen trousers but looks scruffy under a blazer.
1. White T Shirt And Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

This is the pairing I test every new white tee against. If it can't hold its own with straight jeans, it won't hold up anywhere. Look for a cotton with some body to it, because a thin, clingy white tee shows every seam of your bra and goes see-through in daylight. I tuck it fully into a medium wash so the waistband reads as a clean line, then add a tan belt to break up the white and blue. White sneakers keep it casual; leather loafers push it toward lunch with your in-laws. When it turns cool, a trench or denim jacket goes on top without changing anything underneath.
2. Graphic T Shirt And Black Trousers Outfit

The print does the talking here, so the trousers have to be quiet and well cut. I look for a high-waisted black pair with a pressed crease, because the crease is what tells people the tee was a choice. A loose tuck works better than a full one with a graphic, since a tight tuck can pull the print sideways and crop part of it at the waistband. Choose a design that is either clean or properly faded; a busy, shiny print fights the tailoring. Pointed flats or low block heels, a shoulder bag and very little jewelry are enough. It's my answer for days when jeans feel too loose but a blouse feels stiff, and it slips under a blazer for a creative office.
3. Oversized T Shirt And Biker Shorts Outfit

Proportion makes or breaks this one. The tee should end around mid-thigh, long enough to skim over the shorts but not so long that the shorts disappear and it reads as a nightshirt. I prefer biker shorts in a thicker, matte knit; shiny thin ones show every line and ride up when you walk. Chunky sneakers with crew socks balance the bulk of the tee, and a belt bag across the chest gives the top half a bit of structure. If the tee swamps you, a small side tuck at the hip fixes it. I keep this for walks, errands and long travel days rather than anywhere with a dress code.
4. Striped T Shirt And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

A Breton-style stripe brings movement that a plain tee can't, which is why this pairing never looks lazy even with flat shoes. I go for navy-and-white or black-and-white and let the trousers stay solid: beige, white, black or denim. Wide-leg pants need the waist defined, so either tuck fully or do a French tuck at the front only. Check where the stripes land before you buy: a horizontal line straight across the fullest part of the bust widens it, and narrower stripes are kinder than wide bands. Ballet flats or clean sneakers keep the leg line long, and a woven tote or leather shoulder bag shifts it between beach town and city.
5. Black T Shirt And Blue Jeans Outfit

Black tee, blue jeans: the quickest route to looking sharp with almost no effort. It does depend on the black staying black, though. Cheap black cotton fades to charcoal after a few washes and then the whole outfit looks tired, so I turn these inside out and wash them cold. A fitted or slightly relaxed cut both work with high-rise straight, slim or wide jeans, and a black leather belt ties the tee to the shoes if you're wearing loafers or ankle boots. Silver hoops and a structured bag finish it. For dinner later, I swap the sneakers for heeled sandals and leave everything else alone.
6. T Shirt And Satin Skirt Outfit

The appeal is the clash: matte cotton against a skirt that catches light. A plain tee in white, gray, black or cream sits best with a midi satin skirt in champagne, olive, chocolate or blush. I'd stay away from a thick, heavy tee here, since the extra bulk at the waistband makes bias-cut satin bunch over the hip. A thinner, smooth jersey tucked in flat is better, and a slim belt helps if the skirt sits low. Satin marks easily with water and creases where you sit, so I treat this as a lunch or gathering outfit rather than a long car ride. Strappy sandals in summer, ankle boots once it cools.
7. T Shirt And Blazer Outfit

When a client needs to look polished in five minutes, this is where I send her. The tee needs a smooth surface and a neckline that sits flat; a stretched collar or slub texture looks scruffy against a blazer lapel. I usually choose a relaxed blazer with shoulders that fit, because a tight blazer over a tee pulls at the button and shows. A white tee, black blazer, blue jeans and loafers is the classic version. For something softer, I'll put a beige blazer over a cream tee with light-wash denim and ballet flats. Keep the rest minimal: a structured tote, small hoops, a watch.
8. T Shirt And Denim Skirt Outfit

Denim skirts come in two shapes that each want a different tee. A straight midi takes a tucked, fitted tee so the long line stays clean; an A-line mini looks better with a slightly boxier tee half-tucked at the front. White gives it a summer feel and a graphic tee makes it more casual. I'll pair flat sandals or sneakers in heat and western-inspired ankle boots once the weather turns. If the skirt has a front slit, keep the top plain so there's only one interesting thing going on. A crossbody bag and a couple of fine necklaces are enough jewelry.
9. T Shirt And Linen Pants Outfit

Linen trousers are loose and they wrinkle within the hour, so the tee is your chance to bring back some shape. I pick a fitted or slightly cropped tee that stops at the waistband rather than a long one that hangs over the pleats. White, beige, olive, black or a soft blue in the linen all work. Accept the creases; linen that's been steamed flat looks odd by noon anyway. Flat leather sandals, raffia slides or white sneakers keep it easy. If you want more structure for a lunch out, tuck the tee and add a slim belt. It's the outfit I pack most for warm trips because both pieces breathe.
10. T Shirt And Cargo Pants Outfit

Cargo pants carry a lot of fabric through the leg and pockets, so the tee should be the slimmer half. A fitted baby tee, a cropped tee or an oversized tee tucked firmly in all work; a long, loose tee left out makes everything look shapeless. I steer clients toward straight or wide cargos and away from the very bulky, low-slung ones, which add width at the hips. Neutral cargos in olive, khaki, black or gray are the simplest, and a white or black tee keeps them from looking like workwear. Sneakers fit naturally; slim flats are a nice surprise. Good for concerts and travel, where the pockets actually earn their keep.
11. T Shirt And Pleated Skirt Outfit

A pleated midi has a lot of movement, and the tee's job is to stay still. I choose a simple fitted tee and tuck it in completely, because the pleats only fall properly when the waistband is visible and flat. A tee left out sits on top of the pleats and makes the skirt look shorter and wider. Black, cream, navy or a soft pastel skirt all work. Ballet flats or loafers keep it office-friendly, and sleek sneakers loosen it up. If you layer, choose a cropped cardigan or short jacket that ends at the waist; anything longer covers the best part of the skirt.
12. T Shirt And Maxi Skirt Outfit

With a maxi skirt the whole question is volume. A full, flowing skirt wants a slim tee tucked in; a straighter maxi can take a boxy cropped tee that stops just above the waistband. Get that backward and the outfit looks like two loose layers fighting. I like cotton, poplin, knit or denim maxis for daytime because they don't cling to the legs when you walk. Flat sandals or simple slides are best, since a long hem plus a chunky shoe can drag. A woven bag and hoops keep it summery, and a cropped denim jacket handles a cool evening without hiding the waist.
13. T Shirt And Leather Pants Outfit

Leather or faux leather pants bring texture, so the tee should be as plain as possible. White, gray or black, no print, smooth knit. I recommend straight or relaxed legs over skinny ones for most people; they're more comfortable and they don't cling to every curve when you sit. Faux leather doesn't breathe much, which matters on a warm evening, so a cotton tee is better than a synthetic one underneath. Tuck it in, or tie a small knot at the waist if the pants sit high. Loafers, ankle boots or pointed flats and a structured bag finish it. It's my go-to for a night out when a dress feels like too much.
14. T Shirt And Suit Outfit

Swapping the blouse under a matching suit for a tee makes tailoring feel relaxed without looking underdressed. The tee has to be good, though: smooth, opaque, with a crewneck that doesn't sag. A thin, slightly sheer tee is the most common mistake I see here, because the suit makes it look cheaper by comparison. White, black, gray or a soft neutral pairs with suits in navy, beige, charcoal, olive or cream. Sneakers pull it toward casual Fridays; loafers or slingback flats keep it presentation-ready. Check that the tee hem doesn't peek below the jacket when it's buttoned.
15. T Shirt And Joggers Outfit

Joggers can look sloppy fast, and almost always the fabric is to blame. I look for cotton fleece, scuba knit or a dense jersey that holds its shape at the knee, because thin joggers bag out within an hour of sitting. A fitted or cropped tee keeps the top half neat. Tonal combinations do a lot of work: gray with white, black with cream, so the outfit looks planned and a little more polished. Sleek sneakers and a cap keep it sporty. For travel or school pickup, a denim jacket, bomber or long coat over the top hides the fact that you're basically in loungewear.
16. T Shirt And Slip Dress Outfit

Putting a tee under a slip dress turns an evening piece into something you can wear at 11 a.m. The tee should be fitted with a crewneck, so the straps lie flat on top and nothing bunches at the armhole. Black, champagne, olive, brown or a floral slip all work over white or black. Bias-cut satin clings, so I check the side view for lines from the tee hem; tucking the tee into high-waisted shorts underneath or choosing a bodysuit fixes it. Sneakers make it most casual, ballet flats a little softer. It's a smart packing trick: one dress, two outfits.
17. Cropped T Shirt And High Waisted Jeans Outfit

Proportion is the whole point of this outfit. The cropped tee should end right at or just above the waistband of high-rise jeans, so you see a hint of skin or none at all. If there's a gap of several inches when you lift your arms, the crop is too short for the rise. Wide, straight or relaxed high-rise jeans all work. For less skin, I throw an open button-down shirt or cropped jacket on top, which also covers the back when you sit. Sneakers, sandals or loafers, a shoulder bag and a simple necklace are all it needs.
18. T Shirt And Trench Coat Outfit

A trench is mostly structure: shoulders, belt, collar. That's why it looks right over the most basic tee. White, black, gray or a stripe underneath; straight jeans, tailored trousers or wide-leg pants below. Beige is the classic coat color, though navy, olive and black are easier to keep clean. I tie the belt at the back when the coat is open so it doesn't swing, and I always check the sleeves cover the wrist bone. Loafers or ankle boots handle rainy days better than canvas sneakers, which soak through at the first puddle. A leather tote and small earrings are plenty.
19. T Shirt And Shorts Outfit

Shorts outfits get sloppy when both pieces are loose. I keep one fitted: a fitted tee with loose shorts, or an oversized tee with slimmer tailored or denim shorts. Longer Bermuda shorts are more forgiving if you don't like your thighs on show, and they look surprisingly polished with a tucked tee and a belt. Linen shorts crease fast, so I save them for genuinely hot days. Sandals, sneakers or espadrilles all fit. Sunglasses, a woven bag and simple jewelry are the finishing layer for beach towns, errands and outdoor lunches.
20. T Shirt And Cardigan Outfit

Cardigan length decides what goes underneath. A cropped cardigan needs the tee tucked so the hem doesn't show below it; a long cardigan looks best over an untucked fitted tee with straight trousers or leggings. An oversized cardigan over a big tee is where things go shapeless, so I keep one of the two slim. White, cream, gray or black tees are the easiest base. Wool and wool blends pill under the arms and where a bag strap rubs, so a quick pass with a fabric shaver keeps a cardigan looking new. Loafers, sneakers or ballet flats, a small tote and delicate earrings finish it.
Tucking a Tee for Each Waistband in This List
The tuck changes an outfit more than people expect, and different bottoms want different tucks. Here's how I decide.
Full tuck
Use it with pleated skirts, satin skirts, tailored trousers and suits. Pull the tee down from inside the waistband so the front lies flat, then lift your arms once to release a little fabric. That small blouse stops it from pulling out the first time you reach for something.
Front or French tuck
Best with straight and wide-leg jeans and denim skirts. Tuck only the center front, about the width of your hand, and leave the sides and back loose. It marks the waist without the fully tucked look, and it's kind to anyone who doesn't want the waistband on display.
Knot or no tuck at all
A small knot works on a tee that's a bit too long over high-rise leather pants or a maxi skirt. Leave the tee out entirely only when it's cropped to the waistband or when the bottom half is fitted, like biker shorts or slim jeans. A long, loose tee over loose bottoms is the one combination I'd always avoid.
Stopping Tees From Shrinking, Twisting and Going Gray
Most tees are ruined in the laundry rather than by wear. Wash them inside out in cold water, which protects prints and slows fading on black and navy. Skip the high heat in the dryer: cotton shrinks in length more than width, so a tee that used to tuck becomes a crop. I dry fitted tees flat or on a wide hanger and only finish them for a few minutes on low if they feel stiff.
White tees go gray from washing with darker loads and from deodorant buildup under the arms. Washing whites only with whites and rinsing the underarm area before it sits in the hamper helps more than any bleach. When the collar finally goes wavy, retire the tee to sleep or gym duty; no amount of styling hides it.
The Tee Is Only Half the Outfit
If you take one habit from all this, make it pairing a plain tee with something that has more structure or more shine than it does: tailored trousers, a blazer, satin, leather. Then balance the volume, so a loose piece always sits next to a fitted one. Shoes and a belt usually finish the job. Once those three ideas click, you'll notice the same easy formulas you can repeat showing up across nearly every outfit here, and your T-shirts will stop living at the back of the drawer.
