Frankie Stein is one of the easiest characters to read from across a room, because the whole look hangs on a few loud cues: black-and-white hair, mint skin, neat stitches and a plaid that refuses to behave. I've styled Frankie on kids, teens and adults, and the version that works is rarely the most accurate one; it's the one where those cues are strong and everything else is comfortable. The classic look is a turquoise plaid dress, a tie, mismatched tights and Mary Janes, while newer versions bring in lightning prints, brighter layers and a silver leg. Below are forty ways to build the character, from collector-style dresses to a closet version you can pull together tonight, each with notes on what I'd actually do to make it hold up at a party or on a long trick-or-treat walk.

The Five Cues That Make Anyone Read as Frankie
When I style this character, I check five things before I worry about which version it is. If all five are there, people name Frankie on sight; if two are missing, even an expensive costume gets mistaken for a generic zombie schoolgirl.
- Two-tone hair. Black and white in bold sections, not fine streaks. A blue third color is fine for the newer looks.
- Mint skin. A pale green or blue-green that stays soft. Bright lime reads as a witch.
- Thin, tidy stitches. A few lines on the cheek, neck or wrist, drawn neat rather than gory.
- Plaid or a lightning print somewhere obvious, usually on the skirt or a jacket.
- Mismatched legs. One striped, one plain or metallic. This one cue does more work than most props.
Bolts at the neck are a bonus. I use small bolt earrings or a pair of stick-on bolts at the collarbone instead of a neck band, which tends to itch and twist round within the hour.
Drawing Stitches That Survive the Whole Night
The makeup is simpler than it looks, but cream mint paint will smear onto collars and phones if you skip setting it. This is the order I follow.
- Patch-test the face paint on the inside of the wrist a day ahead, especially for kids.
- Moisturize lightly and let it sink in for a few minutes so the paint doesn't grab dry patches.
- Sponge on a thin layer of mint. Thin is the key; a thick coat creases at the smile lines and cracks.
- Press translucent setting powder over it with a puff, then dust off the extra.
- Draw stitches with a sharp gray or black eyeliner pencil: one line, then short crossing ticks. Three or four ticks per line is plenty.
- Finish with a setting spray, held at arm's length.
To remove it, I start with an oil-based cleanser or balm on dry skin, massage, then wipe with a warm cloth before washing as usual. Scrubbing with soap first just spreads green into the hairline.
1. Classic Frankie Monster High Costume

This is the school look most people picture: a turquoise-and-black plaid dress with a crisp white collar and short puff sleeves. Add a slim black tie with a small silver charm and cinch the waist with a studded belt. The mismatch is one striped thigh-high on one leg and a dark fishnet or plain knee sock on the other, finished with black Mary Jane heels or platforms. For hair, a long black-and-white streaked wig with straight layers and side-swept bangs is the anchor. I keep the face soft, with pale mint skin, pink-purple shadow, red lips and thin gray stitch lines, so it reads as Frankie rather than a horror makeup. Silver bolt earrings and a stiff school bag are the last pieces. If the collar is flimsy, I iron a strip of fusible interfacing inside it; a limp collar is what makes a store dress look cheap in photos.
2. Generation 3 Frankie Monster High Costume

The newer Frankie is brighter and more layered. I start with a white collared blouse under a cropped black jacket trimmed in mint, then look for puff sleeves, lightning prints and pops of pink or blue. A pleated blue plaid skirt goes over black shorts, with mismatched knee socks below. One chunky black boot and one silver-painted boot hint at the prosthetic leg and are far easier to walk in than any shaped prop. The wig carries blue as well as black and white, pinned back on one side with pink and blue lightning clips. Pale blue-green skin, coral lips, light stitches, neon bolt earrings and black nails finish it, and a metallic backpack is the one prop I'd keep, since it actually carries things.
3. Live-Action Frankie Monster High Costume

The live-action take is moodier: navy, gray and black with neon accents. A white button-up and a sleeveless plaid sweater vest make the top half, and relaxed plaid trousers or a pleated skirt work below, depending on which shape you like on yourself. A narrow tie, silver chains and a few colorful safety-pin details give it that lab-meets-classroom feel. Black lace-up platforms with bright laces are kind to your feet. I'd pick a shaggy black-and-white wig with blue streaks and leave it slightly messy, because this version looks wrong when the hair is too polished. Cool mint skin, strong brows, optional odd-colored contact lenses only if you already wear lenses, careful stitches, and a notebook doodled with lightning bolts as the prop.
4. Haunt Couture Frankie Monster High Costume

For a runway Frankie, I build three layers around plaid: a fitted white blouse, a cropped black vest and a high-waisted turquoise plaid skirt with an asymmetric overskirt on top. Silver chains, decorative zippers, bolt buttons and stitched ribbon trim give it the hardware-heavy finish of the collector dolls, along with very long hair and dramatic shoes. Skip true novelty heels; metallic platforms or ankle boots with lightning trim look just as strong and won't wobble. Keep the wig long, sleek and center-parted. Mint foundation, smoky blue shadow, bold lashes, dark red lips and fine stitches suit this more grown-up mood. When I sew zippers on purely as decoration, I hand-tack them every couple of inches so they lie flat instead of buckling the skirt.
5. Dawn Of The Dance Frankie Monster High Costume

The dance version swaps the school dress for a one-shoulder black mini with turquoise panels, silver stitching and a flared, layered skirt. A plaid sash at the waist keeps the Frankie connection, and fitted shorts underneath mean you can actually dance. Mismatched patterned tights do most of the character work, so the shoes can be whatever you can move in: silver platform sandals or chunky dance shoes. A short wig swept to one side with a lightning clip stays out of your face better than a long one. I'd push the makeup slightly more glam here, with silver-blue shadow, sharp liner and pink lips, then add bolt earrings, metallic bracelets and a small silver clutch. On a one-shoulder dress, a strip of clear silicone strap or fashion tape along the neckline stops the slow slide that ruins every group photo.
6. Picture Day Frankie Monster High Costume

Picture day Frankie is all about a tidy silhouette. Wear a fitted black-and-white patterned dress with a turquoise collar, short sleeves and a slim silver belt, and layer a cropped plaid jacket over it so the print still shows. Black tights and silver double-strap pumps look polished, though flat Mary Janes are friendlier. A high ponytail with straight bangs gives the wig the school-photo shape. Soft green skin, pink shadow, black liner, rosy-red lips and clean stitches on the cheek and neck keep it sweet. Yellow glasses, a silver chain and a fake yearbook are fun to hold. Mixing a busy dress with a plaid jacket can turn to noise, so I keep both prints in the same black, white and turquoise family and let the jacket be the smaller check.
7. Scaris Frankie Monster High Costume

The Paris-inspired Frankie leans sleek: a fitted blue top, an architectural black skirt, zigzag stitching and silver trim that suggest wiring. A short metallic jacket adds a layer without bulk. One patterned and one solid black tight keep the mismatch, with blue or silver ankle-strap heels. I style the long wig with a smooth side part and a small blue beret pinned on with two crossed bobby pins through the wig cap, otherwise it slides off within the hour. Pale mint skin, blue-gray shadow, precise liner, berry lips and fine stitches, plus a structured silver bag on a chain. It's a grown-up version that suits a themed party better than a walk door to door.
8. Sweet 1600 Frankie Monster High Costume

For the birthday-party Frankie, I look for a full-skirted dress in turquoise, black, silver and white, with a fitted stitched bodice, a sweetheart neckline and a layered plaid skirt. A cropped mesh shrug or short puff sleeves add coverage. Mismatched tights go with silver platform Mary Janes, and I clip removable blue ribbon bows to the shoes so they go back to normal afterward. Loose curls with one side pinned by a glittery lightning clip soften the wig. Pale green skin, lavender shadow, bright pink lips and smooth gray stitches, then a bolt necklace, metallic bangles and a little gift-box purse. If the skirt is too flat, a cheap petticoat underneath does more than any extra layer of plaid.
9. Ghouls Rule Frankie Monster High Costume

This party look is more theatrical: a turquoise mini dress with black geometric panels and a high-low skirt, plus a sheer black overskirt scattered with silver lightning. Keep that overskirt light so it moves. A structured shoulder piece or short capelet gives the outline drama without tipping into scary. Patterned tights and tall black platform boots with turquoise laces suit it. The wig goes up into a bold black-and-white shape, held with silver bolt clips. Mint skin, exaggerated blue and purple shadow, dark lashes, red-pink lips and stylized stitches are the face. A structured capelet only stays square if it has something stiff inside; I use a layer of heavy interfacing or thin craft foam, and I test that I can still raise both arms before I commit to it.
10. Skull Shores Frankie Monster High Costume

A beach Frankie is a good answer for a warm venue or an indoor party in a hot room. Start with a turquoise-and-black patterned one-piece or a fitted romper with modest shorts, and add a stitched white collar. Tie a light plaid sarong firmly at the hip. Striped leggings give extra coverage, or swap to knee socks if it's warm. Silver or black platform sandals finish the base. A short ponytail and turquoise sunglasses or a lightning headband keep the head cool. Go light on the face: mint primer, blue liner, pink lips and a few clean stitches. I'd carry a silver tote and a reusable bottle rather than anything inflatable, which gets in everyone's way indoors.
11. Freaky Fusion Frankie Monster High Costume

The fusion Frankie mixes in creature textures. A fitted turquoise-and-black dress with a jagged hem and stitched panels is the base, topped with a short vest trimmed in white or icy blue faux fur. Keep the fur to trim only; a whole fur vest gets hot quickly and sheds onto everything you sit near. Mismatched leggings, one patterned and one metallic, go into black platform boots with fuzzy cuffs. A big high ponytail with thin blue extensions woven in makes the hair. Pale mint skin, purple-blue shadow, glossy pink lips and curved stitches keep the face on-character. Before wearing faux fur, I give it a firm shake and a lint-roll outdoors so the loose fibers don't end up in your lip gloss.
12. Electrified Frankie Monster High Costume

Neon is the fastest way to make Frankie pop under party lights. Wear a fitted black dress printed with pink, blue and yellow lightning, add a cropped turquoise jacket, and layer a pleated neon plaid skirt over fitted shorts for movement. Mismatched leg warmers and black high-tops with bright laces keep you comfortable. The wig is the star here, teased into soft volume with temporary pink and blue streaks. Pale green skin, electric-blue shadow, graphic liner, coral lips and simple stitches round it off. I'd skip any wiring or light strips sewn into the dress; reflective tape gives an electric flash in photos and can't overheat or snag.
13. 13 Wishes Frankie Monster High Costume

This jewel-toned Frankie uses a fitted blue-and-black dress with gold lightning embroidery, a sweetheart bodice and crossed shoulder straps. One silver legging and one black patterned tight keep the mismatch, and gold-and-blue platform sandals or ankle boots echo the richer palette. Sleek ponytail, a turquoise wrap around the base and a few curled face-framing pieces. Mint foundation, smoky blue shadow, a touch of gold in the inner corners, raspberry lips and fine stitches suit the gold. Stacked gold cuffs, a lightning pendant and a small lantern-shaped purse hint at the wish theme. Gold and silver together can look muddled, so I pick one metal for every accessory in this version and stick to it.
14. Black Carpet Frankie Monster High Costume

Red-carpet Frankie starts with a fitted black dress, turquoise color blocking and silver stitched seams. I'd choose a knee-length or high-low hem so you can walk and sit without fuss. A short metallic jacket or a structured shoulder cape gives you an entrance. One sheer patterned tight and one opaque black tight create the mismatch. Shoes depend on your feet: silver ankle-strap heels, pointed flats or platform boots all work. The wig looks best in smooth side-swept waves, which a synthetic wig holds well if you set them with a low-heat setting or steam. Pale mint skin, charcoal liner, cool blue shadow, berry lips and understated stitches, then a silver clutch, lightning earrings and a printed event pass on a lanyard for fun.
15. Geek Shriek Frankie Monster High Costume

This one is Frankie as the class nerd, with retro accessories. Tuck a white stitched-collar blouse into a blue-and-yellow argyle skirt and add a fitted black cardigan with turquoise buttons. A slim plaid belt brings in a second pattern, which is very much in character since Frankie's wardrobe has always mixed argyle, plaid, stitched tops and silver sneakers. Striped knee socks go with silver high-tops laced in bright yellow. I'd draw a few stitch marks on the sneakers with a white fabric marker; it's a small touch that people notice when you sit down. A low ponytail, mint skin, pink shadow, stitches, yellow glasses, a notebook and a silver backpack finish it.
16. Recharge Chamber Frankie Monster High Costume

The lab-origin Frankie goes silver, black and turquoise. Metallic leggings sit under a fitted black tunic marked with turquoise circuit lines and stitched seams. A cropped silver moto jacket carries removable lightning patches; I attach them with safety pins from the inside or with sew-on hook-and-loop so the jacket stays wearable afterward. Black platform sneakers with silver laces give support for a long night. Straight hair with blue strands and small metallic clips placed evenly at the temples. Light mint skin, silvery blue shadow, pink lips and precise stitches on the cheek, arms and neck. A clear crossbody bag and a cardboard control-panel notebook make the props, and reflective vinyl gives the charged look without batteries.
17. Welcome To Monster High Frankie Costume

The first-day Frankie is cheerful and easy. A short-sleeved white blouse goes under a blue-and-black lightning-print jumper dress, with a bright pink belt and a cropped mint jacket. Fitted black shorts go under the skirt, plus one striped knee sock and one turquoise sock. Silver high-tops make it practical for school events and long trick-or-treat loops. A shoulder-length wig with blunt bangs and small blue barrettes is the least fussy hair option on the list. Keep the face young: pale mint, pink blush, blue liner, rosy lips and two or three stitches. A decorated binder and a light metallic backpack say new student. For a child, I'd test the mint base on the inner wrist the day before, since kids rub their faces constantly and a reaction shows up fast.
18. Dance Class Frankie Monster High Costume

Dancewear makes a quick Frankie. Start with a turquoise leotard or fitted sleeveless top, black bike shorts and a light plaid wrap skirt with a snap closure. A tie wrap comes undone mid-move; a snap or a hidden hook stays put. One striped leg warmer and one silver one over pale tights give the mismatch. Black dance sneakers or lace-up flats beat heels every time for this version. Pull the wig into a high ponytail with one side-swept piece loose. Mint skin, blue-purple shadow, soft pink lips and small stitches on the cheek and neck, then a lightning headband, silver wrist cuffs and a dance bag covered in removable patches. It's the one I'd suggest for a party with a dance floor.
19. Swim Class Frankie Monster High Costume

The swim Frankie uses a modest black-and-turquoise swim dress or a longline athletic top with fitted shorts. Pick simple lightning, zigzag or color-blocked panels over anything glued on, because glued trim lifts as soon as it gets wet. A sheer plaid cover-up tied at the waist works for walking between spots, and slip-resistant black pool sandals with silver straps keep you upright. A short wig under a turquoise headband or a temporary color on suitable hair both work. Keep makeup minimal: mint face color, blue liner, coral lip stain and a few stitches sealed with a setting spray. Big blue goggles, a silver tote and a striped towel make the props. Honestly, this is a dry-poolside costume; very little face paint survives actual swimming.
20. Skulltimate Secrets Frankie Monster High Costume

The mystery Frankie is about hidden color. A fitted white blouse goes under a black lightning-print corset-style vest, with a turquoise plaid pleated skirt below. The trick is a cropped silver jacket lined in hot pink, so the lining flashes when you move. One sheer patterned stocking, one metallic legging and tall black platform boots with blue laces handle the legs. A long wig with thin blue streaks and two lightning clips. Mint skin, icy blue shadow, coral lips and graphic stitches. Bolt earrings, layered chains and a small key charm, plus a lockbox-style purse. If you're adding the pink lining yourself, a lightweight satin is easier to slide on and off over a blouse than cotton.
21. Fearidescent Frankie Monster High Costume

An iridescent palette turns Frankie wintry and futuristic. A pearly white fitted top and a pleated holographic skirt in pale blue, lavender and silver form the base, with a cropped translucent jacket edged in black stitched ribbon. Shimmery tights and chunky white platforms with one blue and one silver lace keep the mismatch alive. The black-and-white wig needs to stay recognizable, so I'd add only a few removable lavender and icy blue extensions. Sheer mint skin, pearlescent shadow, cool pink lips and silver-gray stitches suit it. Holographic fabrics are usually plastic-coated and don't breathe at all, so I'd wear a cotton layer underneath and keep this one for a cooler room.
22. Neon Frights Frankie Monster High Costume

This neon Frankie glows through fabric alone. A black collared romper printed with hot-pink, turquoise and acid-yellow bolts sits under a short pleated plaid skirt, leaving the sleeves and collar on show. Mismatched neon tights and chunky black ankle boots with reflective laces handle the legs. A long wig with bright clip-in extensions and small yellow clips. Pale mint base, saturated blue-and-pink eyes, glossy coral lips and black stitches. A clear crossbody bag stuffed with bright tissue paper adds color without batteries, and stacked plastic bangles and lightning earrings finish it. Under black lights, neon fabric glows far more than any regular bright fabric, which is worth knowing if the party has them.
23. Monster Ball Frankie Monster High Costume

The ball-gown Frankie needs drama you can still sit down in. A fitted turquoise bodice with a white stitched collar joins a layered black high-low skirt, with a plaid panel down one side to keep the school print. Silver patterned tights and black platform heels with ankle straps. The wig falls in loose waves, one side pinned with a metallic lightning comb. Mint skin, deep blue smoky eyes, defined lashes, berry-pink lips and fine silver stitches. Long bolt earrings, a metallic belt and a wrist corsage of blue fabric flowers, plus a small silver clutch. On a high-low hem, I always check the back length in heels before the night; a hem that skims the floor at the back gets stepped on in any crowd.
24. Amped Up Frankie Monster High Costume

Rocker Frankie is a black faux-leather vest over a turquoise lightning-print shirt, a layered plaid mini over black shorts, and soft silver chains at the waistband. One striped and one metallic legging give a stage-style asymmetry, and black combat boots with blue laces and removable bolt charms keep it grounded. Tease the wig into a big rocker shape with blue and pink streaks. Mint skin, graphic liner, purple shadow, bright lips and visible cheek stitches. A toy microphone, lightning earrings and stacked cuffs are the extras. I stitch chains down at both ends and in the middle with a few hand stitches, because a loose loop of chain catches on chair backs and door handles all evening.
25. Coffee Break Frankie Monster High Costume

The café Frankie is the daytime one. A white collared shirt goes under a turquoise-and-black argyle sweater vest, with cropped plaid trousers rolled slightly to show mismatched striped socks and silver lace-up sneakers. A black cropped jacket adds warmth and shape. Shoulder-length wig, simple side part, one blue clip. Light mint skin, soft gray-blue shadow, coral lips and a few small stitches. Yellow glasses, bolt earrings and a reusable cup with lightning stickers, plus a silver messenger bag. If you're drinking from that cup all day, choose a long-wear lip stain over lipstick; creamy lipstick leaves a coral ring on the lid and fades in an hour.
26. Core Refresh Frankie Monster High Costume

This refreshed Frankie goes bigger on layers and accessories. A cropped white shirt with colorful lightning prints, a fitted black vest and an open blue plaid overshirt make the top, with a pleated skirt over black shorts below. One patterned knee sock and one bright blue sock go into sturdy black-and-silver platform sneakers. A black, white and blue wig with a side part and colorful clips. Pale blue-green skin, coral blush, graphic liner, pink lips and tidy stitches. A silver-painted legging, or a silver metallic legging, gives a nod to the prosthetic leg without stiffening anything. Chunky bolt earrings, layered necklaces and a roomy backpack with electric-blue patches round it off. Three top layers is the most I'd wear indoors; after that the plaid disappears under everything else.
27. Monster Fest Frankie Monster High Costume

Festival Frankie suits the character's love of mixed patterns. A turquoise crop top or tank sits under a light black mesh shirt, with high-waisted plaid shorts and a fringe panel, and bike shorts underneath for comfort. One striped knee sock and one silver leg sleeve go into chunky black platform boots. Two small buns with loose blue-streaked pieces at the face are a fun way to wear the wig. Mint skin, bright blue liner, pink shadow, coral lips and clean stitches. Lightning earrings, stacked bracelets, a clear belt bag, a fabric wristband and a water bottle. Buns on a synthetic wig hold better if you twist the hair around a small foam donut and pin through to the wig cap, not just through the hair.
28. Stitched In Style Frankie Monster High Costume

This is the Frankie I enjoy most as a sewing person, because it leans into the stitched-together idea. A fitted black dress with turquoise satin panels shows off white topstitching, and a structured plaid overskirt opens at the front to reveal blue tulle. A cropped white bolero edged in black stitching balances the fuller skirt. Mismatched patterned tights and silver platform Mary Janes below. An extra-long wig in smooth waves, decorated with spool-shaped clips and blue ribbon. Mint skin, smoky gray-blue shadow, rose lips and precise stitches. A sewing-case purse and thimble-style earrings make the props. For visible topstitching that reads from a distance, I use a long stitch length and a thicker topstitching thread; regular thread just disappears on satin.
29. Scaradise Island Frankie Monster High Costume

The island Frankie is a turquoise lightning-print romper with tailored shorts, a black-and-white plaid shirt knotted loosely at the waist, one silver knee sock, one striped ankle sock and chunky platform sandals. If you'll be walking, swap to black canvas sneakers. A high ponytail with blue braided extensions and a turquoise fabric flower. Light, fresh makeup: pale mint, waterproof blue liner, coral lips and subtle stitches. Lightning sunglasses, bolt earrings and a silver beach bag finish it, and a hand fan is genuinely useful in a warm room. Mint base on a hot night tends to slide toward the hairline, so I keep the layer thin and set it with powder before the stitches go on.
30. Day Out Frankie Monster High Costume

The everyday Frankie is built from ordinary clothes. A turquoise graphic tee, a black pleated skirt and an open blue plaid shirt, plus a silver belt and one or two removable lightning patches. Mismatched knee socks and comfortable black high-tops with white soles. A short black-and-white wig does nearly all the character work, which is why I'd spend your money on the wig and save on the rest. Sheer mint skin, blue liner, pink lips and three clean stitches on one cheek. Silver bolt earrings, a black mini backpack and a notebook covered in zigzag stickers. It's a strong pick for school events and low-key family parties.
31. Ghoul Spirit Frankie Monster High Costume

School-spirit Frankie is a turquoise, black and white cheer-style dress with a modest athletic cut, a pleated skirt, stitched stripe trim and a lightning emblem on the front. Black shorts underneath, mismatched knee socks and supportive white or silver sneakers. A high ponytail tied with a plaid bow. Pale mint skin, bright blue liner, rosy lips and a few gray stitches. Soft fabric pom-poms in turquoise and silver are easier to carry than giant props, and a light team jacket covers you between events. I'd cut a lightning emblem from felt and stitch it on rather than glue it; glue on a stretchy dress cracks the first time you raise your arms.
32. Plaid Pants Frankie Monster High Costume

Not every Frankie needs a skirt. Tapered turquoise-and-black plaid trousers pair with a white puff-sleeve blouse, a cropped black vest with silver buttons and exposed seams, and a narrow blue tie. Silver high-tops with yellow or turquoise laces keep you grounded. A straight wig with blunt bangs and a small lightning clip by one temple. Pale mint skin, lavender shadow, black liner, red-pink lips and neat stitches along the cheek and neck. Bolt earrings with a simple chain, and a metallic satchel. It's my go-to suggestion for a cold night, an office party or anyone who simply prefers pants, since the plaid still does the job a skirt would.
33. Punk Rock Frankie Monster High Costume

Punk Frankie starts with a black band-style tee with a generic lightning graphic, a cropped turquoise plaid jacket and a pleated black skirt with blue ribbon stitched along the hem. Opaque tights, mismatched striped socks and chunky combat boots. For the safety-pin look, I use pins with the points closed and a dab of clear nail polish on the clasp, or rounded charms made to look like pins, so nothing opens in a crowd. Lightly tease the wig at the crown and add blue streaks or tiny side braids. Mint skin, strong black liner, electric-blue shadow, magenta lips and graphic stitches. A studded cuff, bolt earrings and a crossbody bag.
34. Glam Prom Frankie Monster High Costume

Prom Frankie is a turquoise satin midi with black contrast seams and a fitted stitched bodice. A detachable plaid peplum or short overskirt ties the formal shape back to the school prints, and it comes off if the room gets hot. One silver patterned tight and one sheer black tight, then black block heels or sparkly platform flats for dancing. A curled half-up wig with a silver lightning barrette. Mint skin, shimmery blue shadow, defined lashes, pink-berry lips and silver stitches. Bolt earrings, a metallic bracelet, a blue fabric-flower corsage and a small silver bag. Satin shows every drip, so I set the mint base with plenty of powder along the jaw and neck before the dress goes on over my head.
35. Winter Frankie Monster High Costume

Cold weather calls for a warmer Frankie. A turquoise turtleneck goes under a black-and-blue plaid pinafore, with a cropped silver puffer on top. Fleece-lined black tights and one striped leg warmer over one calf keep the mismatch. Chunky black winter boots with blue laces handle wet pavements. Pick a wig that fits under a turquoise knit beanie with a fabric lightning patch; a beanie hides the wig line, which honestly makes a cheap wig look better. Pale mint skin, waterproof liner, rosy pink lips and simple gray stitches. Silver bolt earrings, touchscreen gloves and a metallic backpack. The turtleneck is the real hero here, since it keeps the mint on your face from rubbing onto a scarf.
36. Rainy Day Frankie Monster High Costume

Rain becomes part of the costume when the outer layer is a clear raincoat edged with turquoise stitched tape. Underneath, a white collared shirt, black sweater vest and short blue plaid skirt over shorts, with opaque mismatched tights and black rain boots carrying removable silver lightning decals. A shoulder-length wig under a clear or turquoise bucket hat. Water-resistant mint makeup, blue liner, coral stain and stitches sealed with a setting spray. A striped umbrella with rounded tips and a silver waterproof backpack. Everything still shows through the clear coat, which is the whole point. Synthetic wigs survive rain better than you'd think, but let the wig dry on a stand afterward rather than brushing it wet.
37. Sporty Frankie Monster High Costume

Sporty Frankie is a turquoise varsity jacket over a white lightning-print tee and a black tennis skirt with built-in shorts. One striped compression sock and one silver sock go into supportive black-and-white sneakers with blue laces. A long wig in a high ponytail, or a shorter striped wig if you'll be moving a lot. Light mint skin, waterproof blue liner, pink lip color and minimal stitches. Bolt-shaped studs, a silver wristband, a small backpack and a soft foam lightning pennant. This is the one I'd hand to someone doing a long day of walking, because there's nothing on it to fix, adjust or re-glue.
38. Plus Size Frankie Monster High Costume

For a plus-size Frankie, I build around pieces that carry the character without depending on any one body shape. A turquoise plaid fit-and-flare or skater dress with a white collar and black stitched trim is the base. A cropped black jacket that stops near the natural waist, or worn open, gives shape without adding bulk. Stretchy mismatched tights and wide-fit platform ankle boots. A light wig with an adjustable cap and blue lightning clips. Mint skin, cool-toned shadow, pink lips and careful stitches. Bolt earrings, a silver stretch belt and a crossbody bag. Choose breathable fabric, secure shorts and cushioned shoes, and look for tights labeled with a size chart by height and weight; poorly sized tights are what roll down by midnight.
39. Kids Frankie Monster High Costume

A kids' Frankie has to be bright, flexible and easy to get in and out of. A turquoise-and-black plaid dress with a white collar, short sleeves and an attached tie, with black shorts underneath for climbing and running. Soft mismatched leggings outlast delicate tights: one striped leg, one solid gray. Black Mary Jane flats or sneakers, never heels. A light wig or clip-in streaks that come out easily when they start to itch, because they will. Use skin-safe mint makeup sparingly with pink shadow, rosy lips and two small stitches. Soft bolt earrings, a metallic backpack and a fabric lightning wand. For little ones, I leave off anything small enough to fit in a mouth, including clip-on bolts.
40. Last-Minute Frankie Monster High Costume

Short on time? Frankie comes together from closet basics. A white button-up with any blue, turquoise or black plaid skirt, plus a black sweater vest, slim tie and silver belt if you have them. Mismatched knee socks with black sneakers or flats. For the hair, temporary white spray or clip-in white pieces on dark hair, or black clip-ins on light hair. Mint face paint is optional; bold blue shadow, pink lips and gray eyeliner stitches tell the story fast. Silver earrings and a tote marked with lightning bolts in removable tape. White hair spray flakes onto dark clothes, so I spray it before getting dressed and let it dry completely.
Getting a Two-Tone Wig to Behave
The wig is the piece that makes or breaks Frankie, and cheap black-and-white wigs have a few habits worth knowing about before the night.
- Shake it out and brush it gently with a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward. Brushing from the root pulls fibers out and the white sections thin fastest.
- A light mist of water mixed with a little fabric softener calms static and frizz on synthetic fiber.
- Keep it away from hair dryers, oven doors and candles. Most costume wigs are plastic fiber and turn crinkly with heat.
- Use a wig cap and two or three bobby pins crossed through the cap at each side. That stops the wig creeping back when you turn your head.
- If the white looks yellowish next to a bright white collar, move the collar closer to an ivory shade instead of fighting the wig.
Afterward, I store it on a stand or loosely in a hair net inside a bag, not stuffed in a box. A Frankie wig treated this way comes out looking the same next October.
Start With the Hair, Then the Plaid
Every one of these versions works for the same reason: black-and-white hair, mint skin, neat stitches, plaid, lightning and mismatched legs. Get those right and you can change everything else for your event, your budget, the weather and your own comfort. If I had to prioritize, the wig comes first, the stitches second and the plaid third, because that order is how people recognize Frankie from across a room. Keep accessories light, shoes sensible and makeup patch-tested. And treat Frankie's patchwork fashion as permission to mix prints and textures until the costume feels like yours.
