Few costume themes are as flexible as 101 Dalmatians. You get spotted puppies, a famous villain and a handful of London characters, all in black, white and red. That palette is why I like it so much: most of these looks come together from closet basics, thrifted pieces, felt spots, simple makeup and a few accessories. Below are forty ideas covering solo costumes, couples, siblings, whole families and even a group of friends dressed as one pack, with options for babies, kids, teens, adults, teachers and the family dog. Each one includes the clothes, hair or ears, makeup, a prop and shoes you can walk in, from dressy Cruella to a puppy you can make an hour before the party.

Spots That Look Like a Dalmatian, Not a Polka Dot
Almost every costume below lives or dies on its spots. The most common mistake I see is cutting them all the same size and lining them up in rows, which reads as polka dots rather than a dog. Real Dalmatian spots are irregular, mixed in size and spaced unevenly.
- Cut three sizes, from about a coin to about a palm, and keep the edges slightly lumpy instead of perfect circles.
- Scatter more small spots near the neck, wrists and ankles and fewer, larger ones on the back and chest.
- Felt is the easiest material. Sew it on for anything you'll wash or wear twice; fabric glue is fine for one night.
- Black fabric paint gives the flattest, most comfortable result on a T-shirt, but give it a full day to dry.
- Removable vinyl or fashion tape works on clothes you want to wear again afterward, and on sequins or satin that won't take glue.
Two things catch people out with white clothing. First, hold the garment up to a lamp before you start; thin white leggings and tees are often see-through, and the spots won't hide that. Second, black felt sheds tiny fibres onto white fabric, so give the finished piece a quick roll with a lint roller before you wear it.
1. Classic Cruella Costume With Black Dress

The classic Cruella de Vil starts with a fitted black midi dress and a big white faux-fur coat. Sheer tights with red pumps or red flats give the red-and-black contrast that makes her. A half-black, half-white wig tells everyone who you are; I brush it out and spray it before wearing, because cheap split wigs tangle at the parting line. Red lipstick, sharp brows and smoky gray eyes keep the face theatrical without turning scary. Long red gloves, oversized costume jewelry and a structured red handbag finish her, and a small spotted plush puppy makes a funny prop. For an outdoor event, swap the dress for a black sweater and tailored trousers under the coat.
2. Glam Cruella Costume With Red Gown

A flowing red gown turns Cruella into an evening look. I'd choose a floor-length dress with sleeves or a high neckline, since the cropped black-and-white faux-fur stole on top covers only the shoulders. Set a split-color wig in soft waves and go for polished makeup with winged liner, red lipstick and a little contour. Black opera gloves, sparkling earrings and a spotted clutch are enough jewelry. For shoes, pick block heels, pointed flats or ankle boots based on how long you'll be standing. The cane is optional. Check your hem against your shoes before the night; a floor-length gown with flats will drag and catch.
3. Punk Cruella Costume With Leather Jacket

Punk Cruella is the easiest version to thrift. A black faux-leather jacket, a graphic black top and red plaid trousers set the tone, with a white tulle overskirt or a spotted fabric panel for movement. A messy split wig suits this direction best, teased for volume or flipped into a high side part. Bold eyeliner, red lipstick and silver face gems around one eye add the edge; use a skin-safe lash glue for the gems and patch-test it first. Studded bracelets, fingerless gloves, a mini spotted bag and black combat boots finish it. A sketchbook of rough fashion drawings makes a better prop than a cane, and teens tend to love this one because it doubles as a real outfit.
4. Cruella Costume With Spotted Cape

A sweeping spotted cape is the whole idea here. Wear it over a black jumpsuit or a long-sleeved black top with wide-leg trousers, keeping the base plain so the cape is the only pattern. A sharp black-and-white bob wig, red lipstick, arched brows and gray shadow give her the face. Long black gloves, a red belt and big earrings repeat the palette. Red ankle boots, or black shoes with clip-on red bows, and a red handbag or portfolio finish her. For indoor parties I'd choose a light printed cotton cape over faux fur, which gets hot within an hour. The cape's shape is what people recognize from across a room.
5. Kids Cruella Costume With Tulle Skirt

A child's Cruella can be dramatic without being uncomfortable. Start with a black long-sleeved shirt and a knee-length tulle skirt made from alternating black, white and red strips, then add a soft spotted vest or a short cape that stays well off the ground. Temporary black and white hair color on separate sections is often more comfortable for kids than a wig. Red lip balm, a little silver shadow and soft brows are plenty of makeup. Red gloves, clip-on jewelry and a tiny sketchbook carry the character. Black leggings and red sneakers or flat boots make it safe for trick-or-treating, school parties or any child who'd rather wear separates than a dress.
6. Pongo Dalmatian Costume With Red Collar

Pongo starts with a white sweatshirt and joggers covered in uneven black felt spots. I spread them over the front, back, sleeves and legs, since a puppy with spots only on the front looks unfinished the moment you turn around. A soft ear headband, a bendable spotted tail and a wide red ribbon collar with a gold tag give him his identity. Tuck the hair behind the ears or wear a white beanie under the floppy ears. A black nose, a few whisker dots and one bigger eye spot finish the face. White sneakers with black felt patches and a light red leash, or a plush puppy clipped to a crossbody bag, round him out for adults, teens and older kids.
7. Perdita Dalmatian Costume With Blue Collar

Perdita is the softer half of the pair. Combine a fitted white sweater with white jeans, leggings or a midi skirt, then add rounded black felt spots in mixed sizes, leaving plenty of white between them. Floppy ears, a slim spotted tail and a blue ribbon collar with a gold tag set her apart from Pongo. A low bun or soft waves under the ear headband look right. Keep the makeup sweet: black nose, soft whisker dots, rosy cheeks and a small spot around one eye. White ballet flats, sneakers or low boots and a blue leash or plush puppy finish her. Pair her with Pongo for a couple, two parents or two best friends.
8. Patch Dalmatian Costume With Eye Spot

Patch is all about one bold black marking around the eye. Wear a white hoodie and sweatpants with removable felt or fabric spots, and stitch black-and-white floppy ears to the hood. A red collar, gold tag and stuffed tail finish the body. For the eye patch, use a skin-safe black face paint and keep it outside the lash line; I set it with a little translucent powder so it doesn't smear when the wearer rubs their eye. A black nose and whisker dots complete the face. White high-tops with black felt circles tie it together. A cardboard toy television nods to Patch's love of TV, or carry a spotted treat bucket. The hoodie makes this a warm choice for a cold night.
9. Lucky Dalmatian Costume With Horseshoe Tag

Lucky is the one with the horseshoe. A comfortable white tracksuit with crisp black spots is the base, and a red collar with a light horseshoe-shaped tag sets him apart from the rest of the pack. In the film, his horseshoe is actually a pattern of spots on his back, so I also cut a felt horseshoe and put it between the shoulder blades for anyone who knows. Floppy ears on a white headband and a padded tail on the waistband, fixed with a safety pin or hook-and-loop strip, finish the body. Paint a nose, whisker dots and one small forehead spot. White slip-ons, spotted socks and a red treat bag suit active kids, school parades and groups where every puppy needs its own detail.
10. Rolly Dalmatian Costume With Snack Bag

Rolly is always hungry, which gives you an easy prop. Begin with a roomy white sweatshirt and relaxed white trousers covered in soft black felt circles, plus a red collar, floppy ears and a stuffed tail. Paint a small black nose and whisker dots, then blend a little pink onto the cheeks. The key is a light paper snack bag or felt biscuit pouch worn across the body. I'd keep real food out of it at crowded events, because a puppy handing out crackers attracts more trouble than laughs. A white beanie holds the ears steady and adds warmth, and white sneakers or cushioned slip-ons get you through a long night of walking. It's funny on a toddler and just as good on an adult in a big group.
11. Penny Dalmatian Costume With Blue Bow

A large blue bow turns a basic spotted outfit into Penny. Wear a white skater dress over leggings, or a white sweater with a full white skirt, and spread black felt spots evenly over every piece. Floppy ears, a slim tail and a blue ribbon collar with a simple gold tag finish the puppy. I pin the bow to the ear headband rather than the hair, so it stays centered when she moves. A ponytail, braids or soft curls work under the ears. Light makeup with a black nose, whisker dots, pink blush and one small spot keeps her sweet. White Mary Janes, sneakers or ballet flats and a mini blue bag finish the softest puppy on the list.
12. Dalmatian Costume With Spotted Tutu

A spotted tutu works for kids, teens and adults alike. Pair a white long-sleeved bodysuit or fitted tee with white leggings. Build the tutu from white tulle and sew black felt spots onto a few different layers so the spots show at different depths. Glue tends to stiffen tulle and show through, which is why I sew. Floppy ears, a stuffed tail and a red collar with a big gold tag finish the puppy. A high ponytail or two buns keep the ear headband visible. A black nose, whisker dots, rosy cheeks and one eye spot make the face. White sneakers, black flats or low white boots, a spotted treat bucket and fitted shorts under the tutu keep it practical.
13. Dalmatian Costume With Spotted Hoodie

On a cold Halloween, this is the puppy I suggest first. Start with an oversized white hoodie and white joggers, then attach black felt spots with fabric glue or a few loose stitches. Sew soft floppy ears to the hood and fasten a padded tail to the back of the trousers. A red fabric collar and gold paper tag make the theme clear right away. Keep the hair inside the hood and paint a black nose, whiskers and a round eye spot. White trainers with black laces give real support. A red crossbody treat bag leaves both hands free, which matters more than any prop when you're trick-or-treating in gloves.
14. Dalmatian Pajama Costume

White pajamas make the most relaxed Dalmatian there is. A white pajama set, fleece onesie or thermal top and bottoms all work as the base. Use fabric spots that stay put while sitting, walking or dancing; on fleece, I sew rather than glue because glue doesn't grip the pile. A soft ear headband, light tail and red ribbon collar supply the essentials. Natural hair or low braids sit fine under the ears. Three whisker dots on each cheek, a black nose and a forehead spot are enough. Clean white slippers for an indoor party, sneakers for outdoors, and a plush puppy or spotted pillow as a prop. It suits movie nights, school pajama days and very late plans.
15. Glam Dalmatian Costume With Sequin Dress

A silver-white sequin dress gives the Dalmatian idea a party finish. Choose a knee-length or midi cut and scatter black fabric spots on it with removable fashion tape, since sequins don't take glue and you'll want the dress back afterward. Sheer black tights and a red belt or collar-style necklace add the accent color. A spotted ear headband goes over smooth waves, a sleek ponytail or a bun. Winged liner, silver shadow, a small black nose and one graphic eye spot keep the face sharp. A spotted clutch and red gloves are enough accessories. Black block heels, pointed flats or ankle boots finish a look you can dance in.
16. Sporty Dalmatian Costume With Joggers

The sporty version keeps the puppy casual. A cropped or regular white sweatshirt and joggers with black spots form the base. A red collar, a spotted baseball cap with floppy ears attached and a flexible tail at the waistband carry the theme. Pull the hair through the back of the cap or tuck it underneath. A black nose pencil, whisker dots and one cheek spot replace full face paint, which suits anyone who doesn't like makeup. White running shoes, black socks and a red water bottle or spotted drawstring bag are practical props for teens, college students and parents at long outdoor events. I add a strip of reflective tape along the collar or bag for walking home after dark.
17. Plus-Size Dalmatian Costume With Midi Dress

A soft white midi dress is an easy base for a plus-size Dalmatian. I look for a knit, T-shirt or fit-and-flare shape with enough stretch to sit and walk comfortably all night. Attach black felt spots all over and add a red belt at the waist to bring in the theme color. Cropped black leggings or opaque tights underneath are optional. A sturdy ear headband, a stuffed tail and a red collar with a gold tag finish the puppy; thin headbands pinch on a long evening, so choose a wide padded one. Curls, braids or a high bun all work as long as the ears stay visible. Supportive white sneakers or black ankle boots and a red crossbody bag for treats finish it.
18. Maternity Dalmatian Costume With Spotted Dress

A stretchy white maternity dress makes an easy Dalmatian that never pinches. Use light black fabric spots spaced around the sleeves, skirt and bump. Tie a wide red ribbon above the bump and pin the gold tag near the shoulder instead of the throat, where it's more comfortable. Spotted ears on a padded headband and a small tail at the back finish the puppy. A low ponytail or loose waves are easy. Simple puppy makeup with a black nose, whisker dots and a soft eye spot is enough. Supportive white sneakers or flat shoes are the right call late in pregnancy, and a tiny plush puppy or red tote can be the prop. Breathable fabric and no heavy accessories keep it comfortable all evening.
19. Baby Dalmatian Costume With White Onesie

A baby Dalmatian should be soft, simple and quick to get off for a diaper change. Begin with a long-sleeved white onesie and white footed trousers with black fabric spots sewn on securely, never glued, since babies mouth everything. A soft cap with floppy ears is safer and more comfortable than a headband. Stitch a flat red collar onto the neckline and attach a small padded tail firmly at the back. Skip face paint on baby skin; a little black spot on the cap gives enough character. White socks or soft crib shoes finish it. Keep the plush puppy nearby for supervised photos rather than handing the baby loose pieces. It's cozy in a stroller or carrier and matches parents dressed as Roger, Anita, Cruella or more puppies.
20. Toddler Dalmatian Costume With Fleece Jumpsuit

A fleece jumpsuit keeps a toddler warm and makes a full puppy shape in one piece. Choose a white zip-front style and sew soft black spots away from the zipper, where glue or thick felt would jam it. Floppy ears on the hood, a padded tail at the back and a flat red collar with a securely attached fabric tag finish it. Use only a little washable face paint for the nose and cheek spots, or skip it if your toddler fusses. Hook-and-loop sneakers make bathroom trips and quick changes easier. A light spotted bucket holds treats without tiring small arms. Since toddlers almost always push the hood off, the spots on the body need to carry the costume on their own, and here they do.
21. Sibling Dalmatian Costume With Matching Collars

Matching white tops and bottoms with different spot layouts turn siblings into a puppy pair. Give one a red collar and the other a blue collar so each has a name and identity. Both need floppy ear headbands, soft tails and gold-colored tags. Similar ponytails, braids or simple natural styles under the ears keep them linked. Paint the same black noses and whisker dots, then put the eye spots on opposite sides so they mirror each other in photos. I like this trick because kids enjoy standing as a mirrored pair. White sneakers and small spotted treat bags, each with a different ribbon, finish the duo for toddlers, school-age kids, twins or siblings of very different ages.
22. Dalmatian Friends Group Costume

Friends can become a whole Dalmatian pack without buying matching costumes. Ask everyone to wear something white they already own: a dress, a tracksuit, a jumpsuit, a skirt set or jeans and a sweatshirt. Black spots go on every outfit, and each person gets their own collar color and name tag. Floppy ears and simple puppy makeup are the shared details; I tell the group to agree on one ear style and one nose shape, because those small matches are what make a mixed set of outfits read as a pack in photos. Hairstyles can vary as long as the ears show. White sneakers or black ankle boots tie the feet together, and each friend can carry a different prop.
23. Cruella And Dalmatian Group Costume

Put Cruella in the middle and surround her with spotted puppies. The lead costume needs a black dress or jumpsuit, a white faux-fur coat, red gloves, a split wig, red lipstick and black heels or boots. Every Dalmatian wears white clothes with black felt spots, plus floppy ears, tails, colored collars, puppy makeup and white sneakers. Red and blue collars add variety without breaking the theme. Cruella carries a fashion portfolio while the puppies hold spotted buckets or plush toys. Never tie people together with real leashes in a crowd; coiled ribbon looks the same in photos and nobody gets pulled over. New puppies can join at the last minute without changing anything, which makes it good for roommates, coworkers, dance teams and big families.
24. Family Of Three 101 Dalmatians Costume

For a family of three, one adult plays Cruella, the other plays Roger or Anita, and the child becomes a puppy. Cruella wears a black outfit, a white faux-fur coat, a split wig, red gloves, bold lipstick and red shoes. Roger is a songwriter, so a brown sweater, collared shirt, dark trousers, neat hair, lace-up shoes and rolled sheet music suit him. Anita can wear a blue midi skirt, cream blouse, cardigan, low heels and a short vintage-style hairstyle. The puppy gets white spotted clothes, floppy ears, a red collar, face paint, a tail and sneakers. I tie the three together with a small red accent on each person. It reads as a full story with only three people and adapts easily if the child needs warmer layers.
25. Family Of Four 101 Dalmatians Costume

A family of four can split into Roger, Anita, Pongo and Perdita. Roger wears a brown cardigan, white shirt, narrow tie, dark trousers, polished shoes and combed hair, with a music notebook or rolled pages. Anita wears a pale blue skirt or dress, a cream coat, low heels, gloves and soft shoulder-length hair. Pongo and Perdita get matching white spotted outfits, floppy ears, black noses, whisker dots, tails and white sneakers, told apart by red and blue collars. If the puppies are young children, I'd use hoodies and joggers rather than dresses or fitted pieces, which ride up and get cold. The shared vintage colors make the family theme obvious while every outfit stays walkable.
26. Family 101 Dalmatians Costume With Baby Puppy

Build this family around the baby as the smallest puppy. One parent wears Cruella's black dress, white coat, red gloves, split wig, dramatic makeup and comfortable red flats. The other becomes Roger or Anita in a vintage-style sweater, trousers or skirt, coat and good walking shoes. Older children wear white spotted hoodies, joggers, ears, collars, tails and sneakers. The baby needs a soft spotted onesie, a white cap with ears, a flat red collar and cozy socks, no face paint. A spotted blanket over the stroller or carrier links it to the theme. With several small kids, I'd keep every prop light enough to drop into a bag, so the adults have both hands for the children.
27. Cruella And Dalmatian Couple Costume

This couple works because of the contrast between villain and puppy. One partner wears a black midi dress or suit, a white faux-fur coat, a half-black, half-white wig, red gloves, dramatic lipstick and red shoes. The other wears a white sweatshirt and trousers with black spots, floppy ears, a red collar, a stuffed tail, puppy face paint and white sneakers. Cruella carries a red handbag or fashion sketches; the puppy carries a spotted treat bucket. If you'll be walking for hours, I'd put Cruella in low heels or boots. Either partner can play either role. Beyond basic black and white clothing, you need only a few crafted pieces, and the pair reads clearly in photos.
28. Pongo And Perdita Couple Costume

Pongo and Perdita let a couple match without dressing identically. One wears a white spotted sweatshirt and trousers with a red collar, floppy ears, puppy makeup, a tail and white sneakers. The other picks a white spotted dress, jumpsuit or sweater and skirt with a blue collar, the same ears and makeup, a tail and flats. Put the black eye spots on opposite sides for a balanced pair. Light leashes, small plush puppies or matching spotted bags work as props. Keep hair simple so the ears show. It suits couples who'd rather be cute than wrestle with a heavy coat and wig, and either partner can take either role.
29. Roger And Anita Couple Costume

Roger and Anita are the subtle choice, for people who'd rather not wear ears. Roger wears a brown cardigan or sweater vest over a white button-down, a slim tie, dark trousers and brown lace-ups, with neat hair and rolled sheet music or a notebook. Anita chooses a light blue midi dress or skirt, cream blouse, neutral cardigan, low pumps and short gloves. A curled shoulder-length style or a simple vintage wig and natural makeup with a rosy lipstick finish her. Without a spotted plush toy or two in hand, most people won't guess who you are, so I always bring one, along with red and blue ribbon leads or Dalmatian-print bags. It's easy to wear to the office, a school event or any party with a smart dress code.
30. Cruella Jasper And Horace Trio Costume

A trio can play Cruella and her two bumbling henchmen, Jasper and Horace. Cruella needs a fitted black outfit, a white faux-fur coat, red gloves, a split wig, red lipstick and red or black boots. Jasper is the tall thin one: brown jacket, dark vest, wrinkled shirt, loose trousers, flat cap and worn lace-ups. Horace is the short round one in a green or tan coat, striped shirt, relaxed trousers, rounded cap and sturdy boots. When casting friends, I lean on that height contrast, because it's the detail people recognize. Gray shadow or brow pencil gives cartoonish expressions without scary makeup. Jasper and Horace carry a rolled map and a cardboard pet carrier; Cruella holds fashion sketches.
31. Jasper Costume With Brown Jacket

Jasper suits anyone who likes thrifted layers. Start with a rumpled button-down, a dark vest, a long brown jacket and loose charcoal trousers, plus a narrow scarf or simple tie. A flat cap and slightly messy dark hair build his silhouette. Strong brows in pencil and a little gray shadow keep him funny rather than menacing. Scuffed brown lace-ups or work boots finish him. For props, a rolled map, a ring of plastic keys or a flattened cardboard pet carrier are safe and light. He works best next to Cruella and Horace, but a spotted plush puppy under one arm lets him stand alone. Rumple the shirt on purpose; a crisp one makes him look like a waiter.
32. Horace Costume With Green Coat

Horace is built from roomy, forgiving layers that stay comfortable all evening. A striped or plain shirt under a dark vest and an oversized green, brown or tan coat, with loose trousers and sturdy boots, is the base. A rounded cap and short tousled hair finish the head. Soft brows, rosy cheeks and a slightly puzzled expression are all the makeup he needs. An upside-down paper map or an empty snack pouch makes a good joke prop. I'd add a small spotted plush puppy, because without it he can pass for any scruffy character. He's at his best next to Cruella and Jasper.
33. Nanny Costume With Apron Dress

Nanny is a warm, modest option for anyone who doesn't want ears or villain makeup. Start with a dark calf-length dress or a blouse and skirt, tie a crisp white apron over it and add a soft cardigan. A tidy bun under a small white cap works, or a short gray wig for more theatre. Gentle makeup with rosy cheeks, neutral lipstick and soft brows suits her. Black lace-ups, low boots or cushioned flats keep her practical. A feather duster, a folded tea towel or a basket of spotted plush puppies makes the prop, and I keep the basket light since it'll be carried all night. Grandparents and teachers often enjoy playing her.
34. Sergeant Tibbs Cat Costume

Sergeant Tibbs, the cat, adds welcome variety to a group full of spots. A fitted gray sweater with matching trousers or leggings is the base, with darker gray patches for depth. Triangular cat ears on a gray headband and a long flexible tail at the waist come next. Neat hair under the ears or a short gray wig both work. A pink nose, black whisker lines, soft gray around the eyes and a white chin detail make the face. A red or dark blue collar with a small tag, gray sneakers or flats and a rolled paper message or a candle-free paper lantern finish him. I'd tuck a wire into the tail so it keeps its curve instead of hanging straight down.
35. Colonel Sheepdog Costume

The Colonel's shaggy sheepdog look comes from layering rather than a mascot suit. Start with a gray long-sleeved top and relaxed trousers, then sew strips of light and dark gray fleece along the shoulders, sleeves and legs. Fleece is my choice here because it doesn't fray when cut, so the strips stay soft and shaggy without hemming. A gray hood or headband with floppy ears, a soft tail and a blue collar with a tag add the details. Gray face paint around the brows, a black nose and a white chin keep him friendly. Gray sneakers or cushioned slip-ons, and a cardboard medal or small rescue map as the prop, finish him. He looks best beside Sergeant Tibbs, the Captain and a few puppies.
36. The Captain Horse Costume

The Captain, the horse, is the deep-cut choice for real fans. A brown sweatshirt and trousers with a lighter tan panel down the front form the base. Rounded horse ears and a short black yarn mane go on a brown hood or headband. A long yarn tail, a halter-style ribbon and a small name tag finish the animal. I sew the mane through the hood fabric rather than gluing it, since yarn pulls loose with every turn of the head. Brown makeup at the temples and a soft black nose are enough on the face. Brown sneakers or boots keep the coloring unified, and a cardboard stable sign or rescue message makes the prop. Pair him with the Colonel, Sergeant Tibbs and some puppies for the whole rescue crew.
37. Dalmatian Pet Costume With Red Bandana

Bringing the family dog into the theme should cost the dog almost nothing. A naturally spotted dog needs only a soft red bandana or wide collar with a light tag. A plain white dog can wear a breathable spotted vest that leaves the legs, neck and tail free. I skip wigs, paint, glued decorations, dog shoes and anything that dangles. The person coordinates instead: black outfit, red scarf, white jacket, temporary split hair color and comfortable boots. Carry a small spotted bag rather than loading props onto the pet. Check the fit often and take the costume off at the first sign of scratching, freezing in place or tail-tucking.
38. Cruella And Pet Dalmatian Duo Costume

A person-and-dog duo is about as close to the real story as a costume gets. You wear a black jumpsuit or dress under a white faux-fur coat, with red gloves, a split wig, bold lipstick, a structured handbag and red flats or boots. The dog wears only a soft red bandana or collar with a flat tag. If your dog isn't spotted, choose a light white vest with printed black circles that doesn't restrict movement at all. Never put color, makeup or glue on the dog's coat. Carry fashion sketches or a spotted treat pouch yourself. For photos, I stand the dog on my left with a short, plain leash, in good light, and keep treats in my hand so the dog looks toward the camera.
39. Teacher And Dalmatian Class Costume

A teacher can be Cruella, Anita, Roger or Nanny while the class becomes the puppies. For a school-friendly Cruella, wear a black midi dress, a white cardigan or faux-fur vest, a red scarf, a split wig, red lipstick and black flats. Students wear white shirts and trousers with removable paper or felt spots, floppy ear headbands, flat ribbon collars, simple nose-and-whisker makeup and sneakers. Real tails catch on chair legs, so I'd stitch a small flat tail shape onto the back of each shirt instead. A gold paper tag with a different puppy name for each child gives every kid their own character. The teacher carries a fashion folder or a basket of plush puppies, and families can make the student version from cheap basics.
40. Last-Minute 101 Dalmatians Group Costume

For a last-minute group, everyone wears a white shirt with white, black or denim bottoms. Cut uneven spots from black felt, paper or removable vinyl and stick them all over. Make floppy ears from white cardstock or fabric glued to plain headbands. Red ribbon collars with gold paper tags and eyeliner or washable face paint for noses and whisker dots finish each puppy. White sneakers, black boots or flats are fine. One person becomes Cruella in all black with a white scarf or coat, red gloves, temporary split hair color, red lipstick and a red bag. Spotted gift bags are cheap props. Paper spots tear in rain and rub off on car seats, so on a damp night I'd cut them from felt.
Cruella's Wig and Coat on a Warm Night
Cruella shows up in a third of these ideas, and she has two problems: the split wig and the fur coat. Both look best in a cold garden and worst in a crowded living room.
With the wig, I check the parting first. Cheap split wigs are often stitched with a visible seam down the middle, so I part it slightly off center and press a little hair over the line. Synthetic fibres frizz near heat, so keep the wig away from candles, heaters and curling irons, and use a wig cap with a few pins so it doesn't slide when you turn your head. If you're wearing it for hours, a few bobby pins at the temples help with the pulling feeling.
Faux fur is very warm and it sheds, especially the cheaper kinds. I shake the coat out outside and roll it with a lint roller before the party, and I carry it on my arm until the photos. Indoors, a white faux-fur stole or a fluffy vest gives the same silhouette with half the heat. For a child's Cruella, a short white fleece cape is warmer than a stole and far less shedding.
Telling Ten Puppies Apart
In a big group, the puppies can blur into one white crowd. Give each person one detail taken from a named character: Patch's eye marking, Lucky's horseshoe on the back, Rolly's snack bag, Penny's blue bow, Pongo's red collar and Perdita's blue one. For the group photo, put Cruella in the middle or slightly off to one side and arrange the puppies around her in two rows, shortest in front.
A Whole Pack Built From White Basics
The black, white and red palette of 101 Dalmatians stretches to fit nearly anyone: a solo costume, a couple, children, whole families, a classroom, a group of friends and even the dog. The character costumes carry the strongest details, while the hoodie, pajama, tutu and thrift-store versions are easy to make yourself. What makes any of them work is covering the basics: clothes, ears or hair, makeup, collar, prop and shoes. Felt spots and colored ribbon tags let every puppy in a big group stay its own character. Pick soft materials, fasten every accessory well and wear shoes you can stand in all night, and your spotted pack will look like it belongs together in every photo.
