Women's superhero costumes have a reputation for being skimpy and uncomfortable, and they don't need to be either. Every heroine below is built on a base you can sit, dance and walk home in: opaque leggings, stretchy jumpsuits, tunics and jackets that mostly go back into your wardrobe afterward. I've covered the caped classics, the stealthy ones, the magical and cosmic characters and a few easy DIY builds, each with hair, makeup and shoes. Where a look needs more coverage, warmer layers or a plus-size adjustment, I've said how I'd change it.

Do a Mirror Squat in the Bodysuit First
Most of these costumes rest on stretch fabric, and stretch fabric hides its problems until you bend over. Before I commit to any base, I put it on with the shoes I'll wear and run through a quick check in front of a mirror in good light.
- Squat deeply and look over your shoulder. If you can see skin tone or underwear through the fabric, it's too thin; add opaque tights or shorts underneath, or size up.
- Raise both arms above your head. A jumpsuit that's too short in the body pulls at the crotch and shoulders; a two-piece set fixes this better than any amount of tugging.
- Sit on a hard chair for a full minute. Waistbands that roll, belts that dig and stiff appliqués all show up here.
- Check the seams under a bright lamp. Pale colours like Spider-Gwen's white or Storm's silver show every pull line.
For plus-size dressing, I'd usually skip a one-piece costume-shop bodysuit, since their sizing runs short in the torso, and build from real activewear: high-waisted leggings and a long-sleeve top in the character's colours, with panels and emblems added on top. It fits better, it's opaque, and the pieces stay useful afterward.
1. Classic Wonder Woman Costume

The classic Wonder Woman is red, blue and gold, and the gold is what makes her look finished rather than costume-shop. I start with a red fitted top or long-sleeve bodysuit with a gold eagle across the chest, then a blue skater skirt or shorts over opaque tights. Gold cuffs, a metallic belt and a red cape come next. Dark waves, your own or a full brunette wig, plus bronze makeup, strong brows, a red lip and a gold star headband do the face. Red knee-high boots are traditional. I'd honestly choose flat red riding boots instead, and wear fitted shorts under the skirt so you can sit down without thinking about it.
2. Supergirl Costume With Red Cape

Supergirl's primary colours carry across a crowded room. A long-sleeve blue dress with a flared skirt and the red-and-yellow shield on the chest is the whole base. Tights decide your coverage: nude for the classic look, blue or red if you want the colour to run all the way down. Fasten the cape at the shoulders so it can't pull at your throat, and stop it before it reaches the floor. Blonde waves or a shoulder-length golden wig with a side part, rosy blush, mascara and a red lip all suit her. A structured gold belt is the piece I'd never leave out, because it gives the dress its comic-book waist. Red knee boots or flat ankle boots both work.
3. Purple Batgirl Costume

Batgirl in purple and yellow is playful but still a little mysterious. A purple long-sleeve bodysuit or fitted athletic top goes with purple leggings, then a yellow belt, a short purple cape lined in yellow and a soft eye mask with small bat points. Purple gloves and yellow boot covers push the contrast. Red or auburn waves fall loose under the mask. Winged liner, berry lipstick and a little purple shadow are enough. I'd keep every accessory soft: rigid plastic belts and gauntlets dig in the moment you sit, while fabric versions move with you. Black or purple boots with real support finish her.
4. Sleek Catwoman Costume

Catwoman needs very few pieces, so each one has to be right. A matte black jumpsuit, a fitted top with leggings, or a faux-leather jacket over black pants are all good bases; I lean matte because shiny vinyl creases at the knees and looks cheap under flash. Add cat ears that don't press behind your ears, a black eye mask, gloves and a wide belt with silver hardware. A short black bob is classic, or pull long hair into a sleek low ponytail. Lifted liner, soft contour and a neutral or deep berry lip give the feline face. Low-heeled boots with grippy soles and a small crossbody pouch for your phone finish it.
5. Black Canary Costume With Leather Jacket

Black Canary is the costume I suggest to anyone who hates buying single-use outfits, since almost every piece is real clothing. A black fitted tank, a faux-leather moto jacket and high-waisted black shorts over opaque tights form the base. Her fishnets are the signature, and I layer fishnet over solid black tights so you get the texture without cold legs or the net digging into your skin. Fingerless gloves, a plain choker and sturdy ankle boots follow. Blonde waves or a tousled platinum wig, smoky grey eyes, winged liner and a muted red lip set the attitude. A yellow bird pin on the jacket tells people who you are.
6. Zatanna Costume With Tailcoat

Zatanna is stage-magician glamour, built around a black tailcoat. I put it over a crisp white button-down, fitted black shorts and opaque black tights, then add a white bow tie, a fitted vest, white gloves and a black top hat with a purple ribbon. Glossy dark waves are her hair. Defined liner, luminous skin and a rich red lip suit the theatre feel. Black knee boots or polished ankle boots keep it practical. An oversized deck of blank cards or a glittery handkerchief makes a harmless prop. Top hats fall off the moment you dance, so I sew a thin loop of hat elastic inside and tuck it under the hair at the back.
7. Mera Costume With Green Jumpsuit

Mera is all about the emerald and the red hair. A dark green jumpsuit, or fitted top and leggings with a faint scale print, gets a metallic gold belt, green gloves and gold shoulder accents cut from light craft foam. The hair is non-negotiable for her: natural red waves or a bright copper wig. Sea-green liner, peach blush and glossy lips keep the face luminous. Gold flats or green ankle boots are easy to walk in, and a small gold crown or textured headband tops it. I'd stop there. Big accessories crowd her, and the green against red already does the work.
8. Raven Costume With Purple Cape

Raven is dramatic colour from very few pieces. Over a black long-sleeve bodysuit, or top and leggings, goes a deep purple hooded cape cut to stop above the ankle. A red jewelled belt, matching cuffs and black boots follow. Her hair is a short angled bob, natural or a smooth violet-black wig. Smoky purple eyes, defined brows, pale mauve lips and a small red gem on the forehead finish the face; use a skin-safe adhesive on the gem, not craft glue. The best change I make to her is slits or arm openings in the cape, so you can eat, take photos and use your phone without lifting the whole thing.
9. Starfire Costume With Purple Boots

Starfire is vivid purple and silver, and the red hair has to be big. A metallic purple dress, romper, or crop top with high-waisted leggings sets your coverage. Silver trim at the neckline, waist, wrists and boots goes on with removable fabric tape. The wig is the costume: long, bright red, straight and full. Long synthetic wigs tangle against metallic fabric, so I brush it through with a wide-tooth comb and a little wig spray before leaving. Purple liner, pink blush, gloss and small green face gems at the outer eyes suit her. Flat-soled purple knee boots, a green gem necklace and wrist accents finish it.
10. Hawkgirl Costume With Feathered Wings

Hawkgirl is earthy colour and big wings. An olive top, dark brown leggings and a gold belt form the base, with a cropped brown faux-leather vest and gold cuffs on top. Wings that strap on like a backpack are the most comfortable, and I keep them no wider than your shoulders plus a hand on each side so you clear doorways. Wear dark hair loose or in a long braid under a gold winged headpiece. Bronze shadow, strong brows and a neutral lip fit the warrior palette, with brown lace-up boots underneath. A gold emblem or sculpted shoulder piece replaces the mace. Wear the wings around the house first and lift both arms; if the straps cut in, pad them with felt.
11. Black Widow Costume With Utility Belt

Black Widow can be put together from black basics most people already own. A fitted black jumpsuit, or an athletic top with high-waisted cargo pants, gets a wide utility belt, silver cuffs, fingerless gloves and a cropped black vest. Red hair in a wavy shoulder-length bob, or a copper wig with a side part, is the main identifier. Taupe shadow, black liner, light contour and a muted rose lip keep the makeup polished. Flat combat boots support you for hours. Small red hourglass patches on the belt or cuffs say who she is. I'd look for real pockets and breathable stretch fabric, because you will be wearing this a long time.
12. Captain Marvel Costume With Gold Star

Captain Marvel looks athletic and bold. A navy jumpsuit, or long-sleeve top and leggings, gets red shoulder panels, red side stripes and gold trim in fabric tape, plus a large gold star at the centre of the chest. Make the star larger than feels right; small stars disappear in photos. A structured red belt and red gloves sharpen the design. Shoulder-length layered blonde hair suits her, or a low ponytail for practicality. Natural makeup is fine here. Red knee boots, or red sneakers with boot cuffs, both work, and a short red sash at the waist adds a bit of movement without weight.
13. Scarlet Witch Costume With Red Crown

Scarlet Witch gets her presence from layered crimson and burgundy. A fitted red top or bodysuit and dark red leggings go under a long burgundy coat, split cape or sleeveless duster. Add elbow-length fingerless gloves and a light crown of foam or flexible plastic; I glue mine to a padded headband and anchor it with two bobby pins through the hair so it doesn't tip forward. Loose, slightly tousled auburn waves frame the face. Burgundy shadow, mascara, soft contour and a deep rose lip suit her. Black knee boots ground the reds and make this a good pick for a cold night. Red gem rings and hand poses carry the magic.
14. Wasp Costume With Clear Wings

The Wasp is a clean black-and-yellow shape with wings that do the talking. A fitted black jumpsuit or athletic set gets yellow panels along the torso, shoulders and thighs, a silver belt, black gloves and a light helmet-style headpiece with short antennae. Clear iridescent wings attach at the upper back. Keep them narrow and flexible; stiff acetate wings crack the first time someone backs into you. Dark hair goes in a neat ponytail, bob or low bun that sits under the headpiece. Gold shadow, crisp black liner and coral lips are her face, and black ankle boots trimmed in yellow finish it. Small shoulder-mounted wings are the honest choice if you'll be sitting much.
15. She-Hulk Costume With Green Makeup

She-Hulk can look powerful without full-body paint. A purple-and-white athletic jumpsuit, unitard over leggings or fitted workout set is the base. I cover the arms and legs with green sleeves and green tights so the colour is even, and paint only the face and neck with skin-safe green makeup, blending carefully at the hairline. Patch-test it on the inner wrist a day ahead and press translucent powder over it so it doesn't end up on the purple. A long dark green or near-black wig gives her the hair. Purple shadow, mascara and a slightly deeper green for contour finish the face. White sneakers or purple ankle boots, purple wristbands and a silver belt keep her wearable.
16. Ms. Marvel Costume With Blue Tunic

Ms. Marvel is colourful, modest and very easy to put together from separates. A bright blue long-sleeve tunic with a gold bolt goes over red leggings, with a loose red scarf, a gold belt and gold cuffs. Red sneakers suit her youthful energy. Leave dark hair in soft waves. Peach blush, brown liner and tinted balm keep the makeup light. A small blue eye mask helps people place her without hiding your face. Check the tunic length while you're sitting; it should still cover the hips. Because the base is normal clothing, she works for parties, conventions and school days alike.
17. Spider-Gwen Costume With Pink Hood

Spider-Gwen stands out on colour blocking alone, so you don't need props. Choose a white hooded bodysuit, or a white athletic top with black leggings, and add black side panels, pale blue web accents and bright pink lining in the hood. The mask is optional; I'd wear it for photos and pull it off for crowds. A chin-length blonde bob, or a short platinum wig tucked under the hood, is her hair. With the mask off, pink liner, mascara and a soft berry lip are enough. White sneakers or light ankle boots finish her. Four-way stretch fabric matters on this one, because white shows every pull line at the seams.
18. Spider-Woman Costume With Yellow Goggles

Spider-Woman is the classic comic version in red and yellow. A long-sleeve red jumpsuit, or fitted top and leggings, gets yellow panels at the waist, hips and inner arms, yellow gloves with small fabric web extensions, and a black spider on the chest. Long straight dark hair, natural or a centre-parted wig, is her look. Yellow goggle glasses can sit over the eyes or up on the forehead. Sharp liner, warm red lips and defined cheekbones finish her. Low red boots keep the colour line unbroken. Cut the web panels under the arms from soft knit or chiffon, not felt, so you can still lift your arms.
19. Invisible Woman Costume With Blue Bodysuit

The Invisible Woman is the simplest clean-lined suit on the list. A royal blue jumpsuit, or fitted top and leggings, gets black panels down the sides, shoulders, gloves and boots, with a white circle and a bold black 4 on the chest. Measure the circle before you cut the number; a 4 that's too small looks like an afterthought. Blonde hair in a smooth bob, shoulder waves or a ponytail is right for her. Keep makeup minimal and polished. Black ankle boots, plus a clear acrylic clutch or see-through bangles, are a fun nod to invisibility. She's also the easiest to layer thermals under on a cold night.
20. Storm Costume With White Cape

Storm makes her impact through the white hair and the cape. A fitted black jumpsuit or long-sleeve top and leggings is the base, with silver trim, metallic cuffs and a white cape fastened at both the shoulders and the wrists, so it opens like wings when you raise your arms. Choose a short white wig, a long silver one, or textured natural white hair. Pure white wigs can look flat yellow under warm indoor light, so check yours under a lamp before the night. Charcoal smoky eyes, silver liner, highlight and a cool berry lip suit her. Black knee boots, lightning earrings or a cloud belt detail finish it. Keep the cape ankle length or shorter.
21. Jean Grey Phoenix Costume

Jean Grey as Phoenix is green and gold with big red hair. A dark green jumpsuit, long-sleeve dress over leggings or matching separates gets a large gold bird across the chest, then gold at the belt, gloves and knee-high boot covers. Cut the bird from gold vinyl or metallic felt and test its placement while you're wearing the top. Long red waves need real volume; tease the roots a little and set with spray. Copper shadow, black liner, peach blush and a warm red lip suit the green. Flat green or gold boots keep you steady. I'd pick matte or softly metallic fabric over thin shiny stretch, which shows every lump under flash.
22. Rogue Costume With Green Jacket

Rogue has a fun retro feel. Start with a yellow-and-green fitted jumpsuit, or a green long-sleeve top with yellow leggings and a green bodysuit layer. Add a cropped brown faux-leather jacket, green gloves, a black headband and yellow boot covers. The white streak is the whole character, and you don't need a wig for it: a clip-in white extension at the front of voluminous auburn waves does it in a minute. Neutral eyes, strong lashes, peach blush and brick-red lips finish the face. Flat brown or yellow boots and a small round team patch complete her. Try the jacket on with your arms raised; a tight cropped jacket pulls up over the shoulders.
23. Jubilee Costume With Yellow Coat

Jubilee feels closest to a real outfit of anything here. A bright yellow trench or long rain jacket goes over a hot-pink top and high-waisted blue shorts, with opaque tights for warmth. Pink gloves, oversized yellow sunglasses and blue ankle boots fill in the palette. Dark hair can be a short tousled bob or a high ponytail with face-framing pieces. Pink shadow, gloss and a few iridescent face gems keep it playful. A light belt bag holds your things without breaking the line. The roomy coat makes her a great choice for a cold or rainy night, and the colours still read when the sunglasses come off indoors.
24. Psylocke Costume With Purple Sash

Psylocke is streamlined deep purple. A sleeveless purple jumpsuit, or a fitted tank with matching leggings, gets black thigh panels, long purple gloves and a wide red or magenta sash at the waist. Long straight hair in dark blue, violet or black, natural or a smooth wig, falls past the shoulders. Plum shadow, sharp winged liner, sculpted brows and a muted pink lip suit her. Flat purple knee boots carry the colour down, and small silver arm cuffs add detail. Skip the weapon and let colour and stance do it. Satin sashes slide loose within the hour, so I double-knot mine or fasten it with hidden snaps.
25. Kate Bishop Costume With Purple Jacket

Kate Bishop is sporty and nearly all reusable clothing. A fitted black long-sleeve top and black leggings or cargo pants go under a deep purple utility jacket or sleeveless tunic. Purple fingerless gloves, a matching belt and a small bullseye patch near the shoulder identify her. Dark hair in a high ponytail or waves with a little purple ribbon suits her. Natural makeup works: brushed brows, plum liner, rosy blush, berry balm. Black combat boots or purple high-tops handle long walks. Purple-tinted sunglasses and a compact crossbody bag finish it. Her colours carry the character, so leave the bow at home.
26. America Chavez Costume With Denim Jacket

America Chavez is casual streetwear with superhero colour. A red fitted tee or tank goes with black jeans, denim shorts over tights or black leggings. The denim jacket is the piece to work on: a big white star across the back and smaller red-and-white details on the sleeves. I'd use fabric paint on denim rather than iron-on stars, which tend to lift on the stiff weave. A red belt and star earrings follow. Dark hair in waves, a bob or a high ponytail all fit. Bold brows, mascara, warm blush and red lips. Red high-tops handle the walking and a star-print backpack carries your things. In warm weather, the jacket comes off and the red, white and blue still shows.
27. Shuri Black Panther Costume

Shuri pairs sleek black with futuristic purple and silver. A fitted black jumpsuit, athletic top with leggings, or a structured tunic and pants is the base. Purple geometric trim goes around the neckline, waist and shoulders in fabric tape or sewn panels. Plan the shapes on paper first; uneven angles show on black. Silver cuffs, textured arm bands and a narrow metallic belt add the tech feel. Wear braids, twists, a curly updo or any secure natural style. Sharp purple liner, glowing skin and a neutral lip suit her. Black boots with silver details and a small metallic tablet or silver pouch as a prop finish it. Precision matters more than piling on pieces.
28. Gamora Costume With Green Makeup

Gamora is black, burgundy and green with high contrast. A fitted black jumpsuit, or sleeveless top with sturdy black pants, gets a burgundy faux-leather vest, silver belt, black gloves and low-heeled combat boots. I paint only the face and neck green with skin-safe makeup and use matching sleeves on the arms, which saves an hour and a ruined shirt. A long dark wig with burgundy or purple ends gives her hair without dyeing yours. Smoky plum eyes, defined brows and a deep rose lip go over the green; add the silver cheek marks lightly with cosmetic paint. Test the green a day ahead and set it well with powder. A metallic cuff and small black belt bag finish her.
29. Mantis Costume With Antenna Headband

Mantis is a comfortable cosmic pick in black and green. A fitted black jumpsuit, mock-neck top with leggings or long-sleeve black dress over opaque tights gets dark green side panels, a green belt and black cuffs. The antennae define her: a light black headband with two bendable stems topped with small round beads. I make the stems from pipe cleaners wrapped around thin craft wire so they bend instead of snapping when they hit a doorframe. Long straight dark hair, front sections tucked behind the ears, suits her. Pale foundation, green-gold shadow, long lashes and soft pink lips finish the face. Black ankle boots and small green earrings complete it.
30. Elastigirl Costume With Black Eye Mask

Elastigirl is family-friendly and very graphic. A red long-sleeve jumpsuit, or fitted red top and leggings, can take black briefs-style shorts over the top if you like, with long black gloves, a yellow belt and black knee boots. The black-and-yellow oval emblem sits at the centre of the chest. A short auburn bob, or natural hair smoothed into a rounded shape, plus a soft black eye mask, finish the character. Rosy cheeks, mascara and a warm neutral lip are plenty. Opaque stretch fabric is important here. Do a deep squat and a big stretch in front of the mirror before you go, because her poses will put the seams to the test.
Red, White and Violet Wigs Without the Plastic Shine
A lot of these heroines are identified mainly by their hair: Black Widow's red bob, Storm's white, Rogue's streak, Starfire's long red, Psylocke's violet-black. Budget synthetic wigs in those shades tend to look shiny and stiff straight from the bag. A little prep fixes most of that.
- Shake the wig out and brush it from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, never from the roots down, which pulls fibres out.
- Dust a little dry shampoo or unscented talc through the lengths to knock down the gloss, then brush again.
- Pluck a few fibres from the parting with tweezers if it looks like a straight seam, and dab a little concealer on the wig cap where the part shows.
- Keep heat away. Hot styling tools melt most synthetic fibres unless the label says heat-safe, and even candles and patio heaters can frizz the ends.
- Pin it at four points (front corners and behind each ear) through a wig cap so a cape, hood or hat can't drag it back.
When the Wings or Headpiece Is the Problem
Wings (Hawkgirl, the Wasp) and tall headpieces (Mantis, Zatanna's hat, Scarlet Witch's crown) cause the most trouble at a crowded party. Wear them around the house for a while before the night. If you can't get through a door without turning sideways, sit back in a chair or hug a friend without something bending, trim them down. A smaller version that survives the night always looks better in the photos than a big one that came off at nine.
The Heroine Whose Colours Already Suit You
Every heroine on this list starts from a base you can move and sit in, then adds signature colours, hair, makeup and one or two clear accessories. Stable boots, capes fastened at the shoulders, breathable layers and soft headpieces make a bigger difference over a long night than any expensive detail. If a bodysuit isn't for you, a tunic, dress, cargo pants or athletic separates will carry almost any of these characters. Go with the heroine whose colours already suit you, because you'll look and feel more like her.
