College Halloween is rarely one party. It's a dorm pregame, a walk across campus in the cold, a packed house and maybe a second stop, often on a student budget. So when I style a campus costume I start from clothes you already own and add two or three details that make the character obvious, then check it survives sitting, dancing and a long walk. The thirty ideas below mix classic characters, animals, pop-culture favourites, decade looks and a couple of friend pairings and groups. For each one I've given the clothes, hair, makeup, prop and shoes, plus where I'd add tights, a jacket or sneakers when the night turns cold.

Building a Campus Costume Out of Your Own Closet
Almost every costume below is a normal outfit plus a few signals. I work in that order, because it keeps the cost low and means you end up with clothes you'll wear again.
- Pick the base from what you own: a black dress, white top, jeans, overalls, a sweater in the character's colour.
- Name the two or three details people need to see to get the character. For Velma it's the orange sweater and square glasses; for a devil it's horns and red.
- Buy or make only those details. A thrift shop or a craft store usually has the rest, and headbands, felt and fabric tape go a long way.
- Choose shoes last, for the walking you'll actually do, not for the photo.
- Wear the whole thing for twenty minutes at home. Sit, bend, put on a coat. Anything that pinches or falls off now will be worse at midnight.
If you share a closet with roommates, you can often build a group costume with no shopping at all. Lay everyone's basics out on a bed, sort by colour, and see which theme they already suggest.
1. Black Cat Costume With Mini Dress

Black cat is the costume I'd build first if you have an hour and a black dress. A comfortable black mini dress, a fitted jumpsuit or a long top with a skater skirt is the base, with sheer black tights for a chilly night. Ears on a headband and a light clip-on tail do the explaining. Wear your hair down or in a high ponytail that sits behind the ears, not over them. Draw a tiny nose, whiskers and a soft wing with an eyeliner pencil, which won't flake like liquid liner. Ankle boots or black sneakers, and a collar necklace with a small bell if you don't mind the jingle.
2. Disco Cowgirl Costume With Silver Boots

Disco cowgirl mixes rhinestones with Western, and the fringe is what moves on a dance floor. Wear a metallic fringe top with white shorts, a denim mini or silver flares, with a fitted long-sleeve layer under it if you want coverage. A white or pastel cowboy hat with stick-on rhinestones, star earrings and a sparkly belt. Loose curls or two small braids sit nicely under the brim. I'd press the rhinestones on with a dab of fabric glue as well as their own adhesive; the sticky backing alone pops off in a warm room. Glitter shadow, gloss, a few face gems, and white or silver boots. A small crossbody keeps your hands free.
3. White Angel Costume With Feather Wings

An angel works on almost any white base: a mini dress, a tennis dress or a matching top and skirt, with sheer white tights and a cropped cardigan for warmth. Light feather wings and a silver halo headband establish the character right away. Feather wings shed, so give them a shake outside before you go in, and expect a few strays on your friends' coats. Smooth curls or a half-up style with pearl clips. Pale shimmer, rosy blush, silver liner and clear gloss. White flats, platform sneakers or ankle boots, a small silver bag and some star jewellery.
4. Red Devil Costume With Flared Pants

The red devil is a classic that still feels like a real party outfit when it's built on flares. A fitted red top with high-waisted red flared pants, or a red dress or jumpsuit if you'd like one piece. Add a horn headband, a detachable tail and a light red cape. The tail is the part that goes wrong: on a crowded sofa it gets sat on and pulled loose, so I clip it to a belt loop rather than pinning it to the trousers. Sleek high ponytail or glossy waves, red lipstick, sharp wings and a little metallic shadow. Skip the trident and carry a glittery red clutch with flame earrings instead.
5. Cher Clueless Costume With Plaid Skirt

Cher Horowitz's yellow plaid from Clueless is the character costume I see recreated most from a thrift rail. You want a yellow plaid mini skirt, a matching cropped jacket, a white fitted top and white knee-high socks. If you can't find a matched set, a yellow cardigan over any plaid skirt with the same yellow and black works. Straight, smooth hair with a centre part, or a long blonde wig. Fresh makeup with pink blush and gloss, white Mary Janes or loafers, and a fluffy-topped pen or a small notebook as the prop. The knee socks matter more than you'd think; without them it just reads as a plaid outfit.
6. Velma Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma is the most forgiving costume here for a cold night, because her whole look is a big orange turtleneck. Pair the sweater with a red pleated skirt and orange knee socks or opaque tights. A short dark brown bob wig helps, or you can tuck long hair under into a faux bob. The glasses are the single most important piece, and thick square frames slide down when you laugh or dance, so add a glasses strap. Natural makeup, red Mary Janes or loafers, and a small magnifying glass or notebook.
7. Daphne Costume With Purple Mini Dress

Daphne Blake runs on purple and green. A long-sleeve purple mini dress, or a purple top and skirt, with a green scarf knotted neatly at the neck, a lavender headband and sheer tights. A long red wig gives the strongest likeness; natural red or brown hair curled with flipped ends also works. Soft purple lids, defined lashes, peach blush and pink lipstick. I'd pick purple or pink ankle boots over the heels people often choose, since campus walks are longer than you plan. She pairs well with a Velma, so it's an easy one to coordinate with friends.
8. Princess Peach Costume With Pink Dress

Princess Peach doesn't need a ball gown to read correctly. A pink puff-sleeve mini or midi dress with a fitted waist, a darker pink belt, short white gloves and a light gold crown with blue and red craft gems. The crown is what people recognise, so I make it from gold card glued around a thin headband; a crown that only sits on top of the head won't last past the first doorway. Bouncy blonde curls or a wavy wig with side bangs, rosy cheeks and gloss. White knee socks or sheer tights, pink flats or platform sneakers, and a star-shaped purse.
9. Green Fairy Costume With Tulle Skirt

The green fairy is about keeping the wings close to the back, so you can get through a packed kitchen. A fitted green corset-style top or camisole, a layered tulle skirt with shorts underneath, and sheer iridescent wings on short elastic loops. A high bun with green ribbon, small faux flowers or sparkly clips. Green shimmer, winged liner, dewy highlight and a few face gems at the temples; gems hold better with a cosmetic adhesive than the backing they come with. Nude tights for warmth, green flats or lace-up boots, and a small glittery pouch in place of a long wand.
10. Pink Barbie Costume With Flared Pants

Barbie works because the pink is total. A fitted pink top with matching flared pants, or a structured pink jumpsuit, plus a cropped vest, heart-shaped sunglasses, gold hoops and a small pink bag. Blonde waves or a blonde wig help, but any hair colour works if the clothes stay pink head to toe. Mixing two very different pinks is the usual mistake, so hold everything together in daylight first. Glowing skin, fluttery lashes and shiny pink lips. White platform sneakers or pink ankle boots. A small doll-box name tag pinned on makes the reference clear without carrying a cardboard frame.
11. Race Car Driver Costume With Checkered Pants

A race car driver is the costume I suggest to anyone who'd rather wear trousers. Black-and-white checkered pants with a fitted red zip jacket or mechanic shirt, iron-on racing patches (generic ones, not real team logos), fingerless gloves and tinted glasses. A high ponytail or sleek braid stays tidy all night. Graphic liner and a bold red lip finish the face. Combat boots or platform sneakers, a small checkered crossbody, and a printed racing number pinned to the back of the jacket. You don't need a helmet; the number and the checks are enough.
12. Tennis Player Costume With Pleated Skirt

Tennis player is cute, comfortable and you'll wear the pieces again. A pleated white tennis skirt with shorts underneath, a white polo or sporty tank, and a cropped zip jacket if it's cold. Add a white visor, wristbands, crew socks and a costume racket for photos. A high ponytail tied with ribbon. Fresh makeup: cream blush, waterproof mascara and tinted balm. White sneakers are the obvious shoe and also the best one for a long walk. If several friends join, coloured trim or a varsity letter on each skirt turns it into a team.
13. Butterfly Costume With Corset Top

With a butterfly, the wings decide how much fun you'll have. Pick a pair in proportion to your body and flexible enough to bend in a crowd; rigid wire wings snap the first time someone backs into you. Under them, a fitted corset-style top or bodysuit in blue, pink, purple or orange with a matching skater skirt and shorts. A delicate antenna headband, loose curls or two high buns with colourful clips. Blend shadow in the wing colours and add fine liner details at the outer corners. Platform sneakers or flats, and a tiny floral bag.
14. Bumblebee Costume With Striped Dress

Bumblebee is one of the cheapest costumes on the list. A black-and-yellow striped dress, or a black top with a yellow skirt and striped tights, soft mesh wings and a pom-pom antenna headband. Hair in a high ponytail or two buns, pulled back from the headband. Yellow shadow, black wings, rosy cheeks and gloss give a bright face without paint. Black boots or sneakers depending on the night, and a flower-shaped purse as the joke. A friend in a beige beekeeper outfit makes it a duo; keep their hat net off the face so they can see where they're going.
15. Ladybug Costume With Red Skirt

A ladybug comes together on a student budget from red and black basics. A black fitted top with a red skater skirt or red shorts over opaque tights. I attach the black felt dots with fabric-safe tape rather than glue so the skirt goes back into your wardrobe afterward. Rounded red wings with black spots and a simple antenna headband. Two low buns or a smooth ponytail, red shadow used sparingly, clean black liner and a cherry lip stain. Black Mary Janes, combat boots or platform sneakers, and a small black crossbody with a red bow.
16. Strawberry Costume With Red Dress

The strawberry is a fun DIY if you plan the seeds properly. Start with a red dress, romper or top and skirt. Cut small seeds from white or pale yellow felt and attach them with fashion tape; on a stretchy fabric, tape every seed at both ends or it'll curl up as you move. A leafy collar from green felt and a green headband with fabric leaves. Loose curls or two braids, faux freckles, green liner and red gloss. White crew socks with green sneakers or red flats. A strawberry-shaped purse is easier to carry all night than a basket.
17. Mermaid Costume With Sequin Skirt

A mermaid can shimmer without a tail you can't walk in. An iridescent crop top or fitted tank with a blue-green sequin midi skirt, and check that the skirt has a back slit or some stretch, because a straight sequin tube stops you climbing stairs. Pearl jewellery, shell hair clips and a small metallic bag. Beachy waves or a long aqua wig with thin braids. Blue, lavender and silver shadow, with a scale pattern at one temple, stippled through a piece of fishnet or mesh. Low silver boots or turquoise flats, and a gauzy wrap for outdoor events.
18. Greek Goddess Costume With Gold Sandals

A Greek goddess is mostly a white dress and the right gold. A white maxi, a one-shoulder midi or a draped jumpsuit you can move in, cinched with a braided gold belt, with a leaf headband, cuff bracelets and drop earrings. Soft waves, a braided crown or a loose low bun. Gold lids, warm blush, highlighted cheekbones and a neutral gloss. Gold flat sandals are fine indoors, but on cold or wet sidewalks I'd switch to metallic flats or ankle boots. A small gold pouch instead of a staff.
19. Pirate Costume With Corset And Boots

A pirate can look adventurous without any swords. Lace a corset-style top over a white puff-sleeve blouse and add black shorts, a tiered skirt or fitted pants, plus striped tights for warmth. A red scarf tied around the head or a soft tricorn hat. The scarf stays put better than a hat while dancing. Tousled waves, small braids and gold hair cuffs. Smudged brown liner, bronzed cheeks and a berry lip. Black knee-high or lace-up boots, layered coin necklaces, hoops and a small faux-leather belt pouch, which holds your phone and ID too.
20. Sailor Costume With Navy Skirt

Navy, white and red make a clean sailor that reads without anything theatrical. A white sailor-collar top with a navy pleated skirt or high-waisted shorts, a red scarf tied at the front, and striped knee socks or opaque tights. The little white cap is the giveaway, and it falls off as soon as you turn your head unless you pin it with two bobby pins crossed through the brim. Curled ends, a low ponytail or two braids. Crisp wings, rosy blush and red lipstick. White sneakers or navy loafers, a small structured bag and anchor earrings.
21. Seventies Disco Costume With Flared Jumpsuit

Seventies disco is a costume made for movement. A metallic or bold-print flared jumpsuit is the easiest version; separates work too, with a halter top and high-waisted bell-bottoms. Add a wide belt, big round earrings and tinted sunglasses. Big curls from rollers or a full curly wig in a natural shade. Blue or gold shadow, defined lashes, warm blush and gloss. Real platform boots look right, but if you've never walked in them, a night of stairs is a bad place to start; platform sneakers give you the height with more stability. A sequin jacket handles a cool October night.
22. Eighties Workout Costume With Leg Warmers

The eighties workout look is basically activewear turned up to neon. A bright leotard or fitted tank over high-waisted leggings, cropped shorts on top if you'd like coverage, contrasting leg warmers, wristbands and a wide fabric headband. A high side ponytail with an oversized scrunchie. Vivid shadow, pink blush and glossy lips are meant to look loud. White sneakers are right for both the theme and the dancing. A reusable water bottle doubles as the prop and the most useful thing anyone carries all night. Friends can each pick different neon combinations for an easy group.
23. Y2K Pop Star Costume With Cargo Pants

A Y2K pop star needs a coordinated look, not a pile of throwback pieces. Low- or mid-rise cargo pants with a sparkly fitted top and a cropped faux-fur jacket, tinted sunglasses, hoops, a rhinestone belt and a tiny shoulder bag. High ponytail, crimped waves or two face-framing braids with butterfly clips. Frosted shadow, glossy lips and small face gems. Platform sneakers or sturdy heeled boots. I'd pick one colour family, silver or pink, and keep every piece inside it. A toy microphone is great for photos; put it in your bag afterward so you aren't holding it all night.
24. Pink Ballerina Costume With Tulle Skirt

Soft pink layers make a ballerina that people read immediately. A pink bodysuit or wrap top with an opaque tulle skirt, shorts or leggings underneath, pale tights and a cropped ballet cardigan. A neat bun with satin ribbon or pearl pins; spray the bun before you add pins so they grip. Pink lids, rosy blush, highlight and a satin lip. Ballet flats suit the look but slide on spilled-drink floors, so blush sneakers or low Mary Janes are safer for a long night. A ribbon choker and a small structured bag. No wings needed.
25. Holly Golightly Costume With Black Dress

Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's is built almost entirely from basics. A sleeveless black midi or a simple black mini with sheer tights, a layered faux-pearl necklace, long black gloves, oversized sunglasses and a small jewelled hairpiece. A high bun with volume at the crown, or an updo wig. Defined black liner, tidy brows, peach blush and soft pink lipstick. Long satin gloves get grubby fast at a party, so take them off to eat and drink. Black ballet flats or low block heels, a small structured bag, and an empty paper coffee cup for photos.
26. Secret Agent Costume With Black Suit

If you're tired of dresses, wings and glitter, the secret agent is sharp and simple. A tailored black blazer, white button-down, slim black trousers and a narrow black tie, with dark sunglasses and a cardstock clip-on badge. A smooth ponytail or low bun. Matte skin, defined brows, subtle liner and a neutral lip. Dark glasses indoors at night are hard to see through, so push them up on your head once you're inside. Black loafers or clean sneakers, and a tiny notebook or silver hard-shell clutch. It's an easy group costume because everyone follows the same black-and-white rule.
27. Ringmaster Costume With Red Jacket

The jacket is the ringmaster's whole costume, so put your money and effort there. A fitted red military-style jacket over a white blouse or black bodysuit, tailored black shorts or pants, gold trim, decorative buttons and a black bow tie. If you're adding the gold trim yourself, sew it on; glued braid lifts at the cuffs. A small black hat secured with elastic or hairpins. Polished waves or a sleek ponytail, gold lids, winged liner and red lipstick. Black knee-high or ankle boots, white gloves and a gold-trimmed clutch instead of a whip.
28. Scarecrow Costume With Plaid Shirt

A scarecrow is the outfit I'd wear to an outdoor party where you'll stand on grass for hours. A plaid flannel with denim overalls, cuffed jeans or a brown corduroy skirt. Tie raffia or yellow ribbon at the cuffs and pockets to suggest straw; real straw sheds everywhere and makes some people itch. A floppy brown hat with a fabric sunflower, two loose braids. A stitched smile and nose patch in eyeliner keep it cute. Brown boots or hiking shoes, and a fabric crow or sunflower crossbody so your hands stay free. Flannel is warm, so this is a good cold-night pick.
29. Sun And Moon Duo Costume

Sun and moon gives two friends separate costumes that clearly belong together. The sun wears a gold dress or top and skirt with a radiant crown headband, metallic makeup, warm jewellery and gold sneakers. The moon goes silver or navy with a crescent headpiece, star clips, cool shimmer and silver ankle boots. Both can add sheer tights and cropped jackets. Full curls for the sun, a sleek ponytail or soft waves for the moon. I'd match the metallic finish across both, since a brassy gold beside a soft pewter looks like a mismatch in photos. Small star crossbody bags for each.
30. Three Fruit Group Costume

For three friends, a fruit group is cheap and easy to read together. One is a strawberry in red with felt seeds and green leaves, one a pineapple in yellow with a spiky green headband, and one a bunch of grapes in purple with light fabric circles attached. Each wears a comfortable dress, romper or separates, with every decoration stitched or taped securely. Make the grapes from felt or fleece circles, not balloons, which pop the moment you hug someone. Rosy cheeks, coloured liner and gloss for all three. Matching sneakers or flat boots, hair pulled back to support the headpieces, and small woven bags.
Pockets, Layers and Headbands That Hold
The practical problems on a college Halloween night are the same every year: nowhere to put your phone and ID, a costume that's freezing outside and too warm inside, and a headpiece that won't stay on.
Somewhere for your phone, keys and ID
Many of these costumes have no pockets, so I build carrying into the look: a small crossbody in a costume colour, a belt pouch for the pirate or race driver, or a slim bag worn under a jacket. Put it on before you leave and keep it zipped. A tiny bag you can wear while dancing is far better than a clutch you put down somewhere and forget.
Warm outside, cool inside
- Fleece-lined tights or thin thermal leggings go under almost every skirt here and barely show.
- A cropped jacket or cardigan in a costume colour can stay on for photos instead of hiding the outfit.
- Wear one removable layer rather than one thick one, so you can take it off once a crowded room heats up.
- Skip a coat you'll have to leave in a pile; a light layer that ties around the waist is easier to keep track of.
Ears, halos, hats and crowns
Headbands slide back as the night goes on, especially on smooth or freshly washed hair. Cross two bobby pins through the band behind each ear and it'll stay put through dancing and hugs. Small hats and crowns need the same treatment, or a thin elastic hidden under the hair. If anything on your head has wire or a stiff point, check it can't poke the person standing next to you.
One Costume, Three Stops and a Long Walk Home
A good campus costume is one that lasts from the dorm to the last party without falling apart or freezing you. Most of these looks start in your own closet, with one or two cheap accessories to make the character clear. Test your shoes, pin or clip every headpiece, and check you can sit and move in wings or decorations. Add tights, a jacket or leggings when the forecast drops. Black cat, a film character, a DIY fruit or a friend theme, the one you'll enjoy most is the one you'll still be comfortable in at midnight.
