The hardest part of a couple costume is usually the conversation about who wears the silly half. So I look for pairs where both sides are fun to wear, and where most of the outfit already hangs in one of your wardrobes. The thirty below run from gothic characters and cartoon duos to food jokes, retro dancefloor looks and a few easy spooky classics. For each one I've covered clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes, and pointed out the piece that matters most so you know where to spend your effort. Swap roles, add coverage or change the colours freely. Everything here is meant to stay comfortable through a party, a parade or an evening walking door to door.

Two Wardrobes Usually Hold Half the Costume Already
Before either of you buys a thing, empty both closets onto the bed and sort by colour. Most of the pairs below are built on black, white, denim, red or a pastel, and you'll often find that one character already has three of its five pieces sitting there.
- Pick three pairs you both like, then check which one needs the fewest new pieces.
- List what's missing for that pair and split it by type: clothing, headwear, makeup, prop.
- Look for clothing in thrift stores first, since suits, overalls, plaid shirts and party dresses are plentiful there in autumn.
- Spend the money on the one piece that carries the character, usually the wig, the hat or the headpiece. A cheap version of that piece is the thing people notice.
- Make the prop last. It's the easiest part to improvise from cardboard, foam or something in the kitchen.
Thrifted pieces need a wash before wearing, and a quick check of seams and zips. A suit jacket a size too big is fine for most characters; trousers that are too tight to sit in are not.
1. Morticia And Gomez Couple Costume

Morticia is all silhouette: a fitted, floor-length black dress with flared sleeves, pointed black nails and sleek black shoes, plus a centre-parted black wig, pale foundation, smoky eyes and deep red lips. Gomez needs a dark pinstripe suit, a white shirt, a black tie, polished shoes, slicked-back hair and a thin pencil mustache drawn with costume makeup. A single artificial red rose is the only prop you need. Floor-length hems catch on stairs, so I tack them up a half inch with fashion tape before leaving. Pick a dress with some stretch, because a stiff gown is hard to sit in all night.
2. Barbie And Ken Couple Costume

Exact replicas aren't the point with Barbie and Ken; strong pink is. One partner wears a hot-pink sleeveless dress or a vest-and-skirt set, pumps, big earrings and a small handbag, with blond waves or a smooth blond wig and glossy pink makeup. The other wears a pink-and-green striped shirt, white pants, a matching belt and white sneakers, with neatly styled blond hair and sunglasses. A painted foam-board surfboard sells it. I'd cut that board no taller than your shoulder, since a full-size one has to stay by the door all evening. Both halves come together quickly from thrift racks.
3. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couple Costume

Stripes against red is the contrast that makes this pair read. The Beetlejuice partner wears a black-and-white striped suit with a white shirt, black boots and messy pale hair, with a light white face and soft grey shading around the eyes. Lydia wears a layered red dress with sheer sleeves, red tights and black or red ankle boots, plus a teased black wig with wispy bangs and muted smoky makeup. An old camera or a small bunch of red silk flowers makes the prop. White face paint looks chalky if it's thick, so I sponge on a thin layer and set it with powder instead. Keep both faces visible for crowded events.
4. Daphne And Fred Couple Costume

This one comes almost entirely from thrift racks. Daphne needs a purple dress at mini or knee length, pale pink tights, purple flats and a green neck scarf, with a long red wig, a purple headband, lavender shadow and pink lips. Fred wears a white long-sleeve shirt, blue pants, brown loafers and an orange scarf, with a short blond wig or brushed blond hair. A magnifying glass, a notebook or a cardboard mystery map adds the story. Neck scarves slip all night, so I pin them at the back of the collar with a small safety pin. Choose a skirt length you can actually sit in.
5. Shrek And Fiona Couple Costume

Green makeup is the commitment here, so test it a few days before. Shrek wears a cream tunic, brown vest, plaid pants or leggings, a wide belt and brown boots, with a bald cap or snug green head covering and rounded craft-foam ears. Fiona wears a long green velvet-look dress, flats, a braided red wig and a small gold crown, plus the same soft green face for her ogre form. Water-based paint goes on best in thin layers with a damp sponge; thick layers crack around the mouth. Keep cleansing wipes in a pocket. A plush donkey or a storybook gives you something to hold.
6. Mario And Luigi Couple Costume

Overalls, caps and mustaches are the three things to get right. One partner wears blue overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, the other the same overalls over green, both with white gloves, brown boots or sneakers and red and green caps with felt initials. Short brown wigs and removable mustaches finish them, with almost no makeup. Stitch the initials onto the caps, since felt glued to a curved brim pops off. Foam stars, cardboard coins or a plush mushroom are light props. Buy the overalls a size up so you can sit, and you'll get a second life out of them as everyday workwear.
7. Alice And Mad Hatter Couple Costume

Alice wears a pale blue dress with a white apron, white tights, black flats and a black ribbon headband, with a blond wig or soft curls and fresh rosy makeup. The Hatter is where you can play: patterned trousers, a colourful waistcoat, a ruffled shirt, a long coat, lace-up boots, a bright orange wig, an oversized top hat and pink-and-purple eye makeup. A plastic teacup and a small clock set the tea-party scene. An oversized top hat is heavy, so I glue a strip of foam inside the band to keep it from sliding down to the eyebrows. Clash patterns freely, but repeat one colour across both outfits.
8. Tinker Bell And Peter Pan Couple Costume

Tink wears a short green dress over matching dance shorts, sheer wings, pale green flats and a blond bun wig, with shimmering gold eyes and a ribbon-wrapped wand rather than one shedding glitter. Peter wears a belted green tunic, dark green leggings, brown ankle boots and a soft pointed cap with a red feather, plus tousled auburn hair. Use two different greens so you look styled rather than matching. The dance shorts under the dress matter more than they sound, because wings lift the hem every time you turn. Add nude tights or long sleeves if it's cold, and keep the accessories soft for busy rooms.
9. Little Red Riding Hood And Wolf Couple Costume

The red cape does all the storytelling, so it's worth getting a proper hooded one. Red wears a white blouse, a black or brown skirt, opaque tights and lace-up boots, with soft curls, rosy makeup and a wicker basket of silk flowers. The wolf wears grey jeans, a grey flannel shirt, a faux-fur vest and dark boots, with a grey ear headband, a fabric tail, messy hair and simple grey-and-black shading around the nose and brows. A plaid scarf can link the two. Faux fur sheds on a dark shirt, so give the vest a good shake outside first. This pair is built for layering underneath on a cold night outdoors.
10. Vampire Couple Costume

Deep red and black do the work without any gore. One partner wears a long black dress, a velvet cape, patterned tights and pointed ankle boots; the other wears a black suit, burgundy vest, white shirt, dark cape and polished shoes. Neat hair or black wigs with a subtle widow's peak, pale foundation, defined brows, smoky eyes and dark berry lips. Small fangs and ornate pendants are the recognisable details. I'd test the fangs before the night, since many cheap ones make talking and drinking awkward. Use a plastic goblet rather than glass, and wear thermals under the capes if you'll be outside.
11. Witch And Black Cat Couple Costume

Either of you can take either half. The witch wears a long black dress or a black blouse with a flowing skirt, striped tights, buckled boots and a wide-brim pointed hat, with dark waves, purple shadow, berry lips and a small broom. The cat wears a fitted black top, black jeans, black sneakers and a faux-fur vest for texture, plus ears, a soft tail, fingerless gloves and whiskers drawn with face-safe liner. A black collar with a purple tag links you. Wide brims blow off outside, so I add a thin elastic or a pair of combs to the hat. Keep the tail short enough that it never touches the ground.
12. Angel And Devil Couple Costume

White and red are an easy contrast to read from anywhere. The angel wears a white dress, jumpsuit or shirt and trousers, white sneakers, feather-look wings and a silver halo headband, with luminous makeup, soft curls and a touch of silver shadow. The devil wears a red dress or red shirt with black pants, black boots, a red cape and a horn headband, plus slicked hair, sharp liner and deep red lips. Leave the pitchfork at home; a red heart sign is a friendlier prop. Halos on thin wire droop, so I choose a headband with a thicker stem. Wings should fold or flex to fit through doors.
13. Sun And Moon Couple Costume

The sun wears a gold jumpsuit or yellow dress with gold flats, a radiating headband and layered metallic jewellery, with warm gold shadow, glowing cheeks and soft waves. The moon wears navy or silver decorated with fabric stars, silver boots and a crescent crown, with cool silver makeup, tiny face gems and silver hair accessories. Each of you can carry a small painted foam disc. Metallic fabric shows every crease, so steam the pieces the day before rather than ironing them, which can melt the coating. Skip loose glitter. If you add capes, keep them at ankle length or shorter.
14. Bee And Beekeeper Couple Costume

Daytime plans suit this pair best, since the beekeeper's mesh is easier to see through in daylight. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped shirt, black leggings or pants, yellow sneakers, sheer wings and an antenna headband, with an optional black skirt or yellow tutu for volume, yellow shadow and rosy makeup. The beekeeper wears khaki pants, a cream work shirt, tan boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with soft mesh. Pin the mesh back at the front so it frames the face rather than covering it. Carry an empty honey jar or a small pot of silk flowers. Either role adapts to dresses, trousers or coats.
15. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couple Costume

For couples who don't want wigs or face paint, this is the easy food joke. One partner wears tan pants and a brown or beige sweatshirt, the other purple or berry, both in matching sneakers. Felt jar labels go on the shirts with removable fabric tape, and tan and purple beanies make the lids. Bronze or berry makeup is optional. Oversized foam-board bread slices finish the sandwich. I round every corner on the board and add a fabric hand strap on the back, which makes them easy to carry and to set down. It's cheap, personal and warm enough for a chilly night.
16. Ketchup And Mustard Couple Costume

Ketchup and mustard is about as low-effort as a couple costume gets, which is its charm. One partner wears red pants with a red sweatshirt or simple red dress, red sneakers and a pointed red cap; the other does the same in yellow. White felt labels across the front make it read from a distance. Natural hair or red and yellow clips, red lips for one and golden shadow for the other. Foam-sheet nozzle caps on headbands are the detail that turns coloured clothes into bottles. I'd make the cap tall and narrow, because a short one just looks like a party hat. Cardboard hot dogs or pretend fries add a laugh.
17. Milk And Cookies Couple Costume

Sweatshirts, jackets and sneakers all fit under this pair, so it's a good pick for cold weather. The milk wears white jeans, a white sweatshirt, white sneakers and a white cap, with a blue-and-white felt carton label and a striped paper straw. The cookie wears tan pants, a brown top and brown shoes with removable dark felt chips, plus a round cookie headband or a foam-board cookie worn like a sign. Warm brown makeup and natural hair keep it relaxed. White clothes pick up every mark, so I'd keep the milk partner away from red wine. Check that nothing gets in the way when you sit down.
18. Rain Cloud And Rainbow Couple Costume

The cloud wears grey joggers, a silver sweater, grey sneakers and a headband covered in soft white craft stuffing, with blue felt raindrops hanging from short ribbons at the sleeves or hem, silver shadow and a grey-blue wig or natural hair. The rainbow wears a striped multicolour dress, a shirt-and-pants set or a layered tulle skirt with a bright top, plus colourful sneakers, rainbow clips and tidy bright eyes. A foam sun links you. Craft stuffing pulls loose as you move, so I glue it in small tufts rather than one big sheet. Keep raindrop ribbons short so they don't tangle together.
19. Firefighter And Dalmatian Couple Costume

The spots make the Dalmatian, and they're where most homemade versions go wrong: too regular and they look like polka dots. Cut them in different sizes and scatter them unevenly over a white sweatshirt and pants. Add black sneakers, floppy ears, a fabric tail, a painted black nose and a few face spots with skin-safe makeup. The firefighter wears dark cargo pants, a plain T-shirt, reflective suspenders, sturdy boots and a light costume helmet, with only a faint smudge of grey on the cheeks. A plush firehouse toy or a rolled cardboard hose is enough. Leave off official badges or anything that looks like real emergency kit.
20. Pilot And Flight Attendant Couple Costume

Most of this outfit is reusable office clothing. The pilot wears navy trousers, a white button-down, a dark tie, a navy blazer, black shoes and a peaked cap, with gold ribbon stripes stitched loosely to the cuffs so they come off afterwards. A cardboard flight map works as a prop. The flight attendant wears a navy dress or skirt suit, low heels, a colourful neck scarf and a small rolling bag, with a smooth bun or neat waves, classic liner and red lips. Make up your own airline name for the badges rather than copying a real one. Trousers, flats or sneakers swap in easily for comfort.
21. Cowboy And Cowgirl Couple Costume

Each partner starts with jeans, a plaid or chambray shirt, a leather-look belt, a vest and cowboy boots. Different hat colours or contrasting bandanas keep you coordinated without being twins. One might add a denim skirt over opaque tights, the other a fringed jacket. Braids, loose waves or brushed-back hair, warm neutral makeup and a few light freckles. A coil of soft rope or a small hobby horse is the prop, never anything weapon-like. I'd check the boot soles before a dance floor or a wet street, because smooth leather soles slide on both. This one works indoors or outside, with room to layer.
22. 1970s Disco Couple Costume

Disco needs movement, so pick fabric that catches the light when you dance. One partner wears a metallic jumpsuit or a sequined top with bell-bottoms, platforms and big hoops; the other wears a bold patterned shirt, white flares, tinted glasses and matching platforms. Big curls, feathered hair or rounded wigs, glittery eye shadow instead of body glitter, and glossy neutral lips. A mirror-ball bag or a light record makes a good prop. Platforms should be stable and not too high; walk around the house in them for an evening first. Long flares hide block heels or sneakers if comfort comes first.
23. 1980s Workout Couple Costume

Layer it like you're actually going to sweat. Leggings, bike shorts or joggers go first, then oversized tanks, cropped sweatshirts and bright windbreakers, with high-tops, scrunched socks and contrasting leg warmers. Sweatbands, wristbands and plastic sunglasses do a lot for very little. A high side ponytail, teased curls or a fluffy wig, with blue, pink and purple shadow and bright blush. Foam dumbbells or a rolled mat are safe props. Neon pieces turn up constantly in thrift stores this time of year, so look there before ordering anything. Mix your neons rather than matching them exactly; it looks more like the era.
24. 1920s Flapper And Gentleman Couple Costume

A fringed dress needs a slip underneath, or the fringe clings and the dress rides up as you move. The flapper wears a knee-length fringed dress, opaque tights, low-heeled Mary Janes, long costume pearls and a jewelled headband, with a faux bob or finger waves, defined eyes and deep berry lips. The gentleman wears a dark three-piece suit, a white shirt, a bow tie, polished shoes and a brimmed hat, with slicked hair and a neat costume mustache. A folding fan and a vintage-style newspaper are safe props. Keep pearl strands short enough not to catch. Black, gold and burgundy tie the two together.
25. Skeleton Couple Costume

Both partners start from black long-sleeve tops, leggings or jeans, and black boots or sneakers. Add white felt bones with removable fabric adhesive, or buy printed skeleton pieces if time is short. Face paint defines the eyes, nose, cheekbones and teeth, kept graphic rather than gory. Then let each skeleton have its own character: one in a black tulle skirt and a floral crown, the other in a tailored black blazer and a little top hat. White gloves printed with hand bones finish it. Keep paint off the eyelids and do a patch test on the inner wrist a day or two before.
26. Ghost Bride And Groom Couple Costume

The trick with a ghost bride and groom is keeping every piece in the same muted family: white, ivory and soft grey. The bride wears a secondhand white or pale grey dress, white shoes, lace gloves and a light veil, with softly tangled hair, pale makeup, grey shadow and a faded silk bouquet. The groom wears a grey suit, a white shirt, a loosened tie and dark shoes dusted with removable fabric chalk, with the same pale face and grey around the eyes. A grey buttonhole links you. Torn edges add age, but I fray only the sleeves and veil and keep the hem clean so nobody trips.
27. Scarecrow And Farmer Couple Costume

Raffia is the scarecrow's signature, and it should be tied loosely at the wrists and ankles, well away from the face and any open flame. The scarecrow wears patched overalls over a plaid shirt, a floppy straw hat and work boots, with rosy cheeks, a painted triangle nose, freckles and short stitch lines at the mouth. The farmer wears jeans, a chambray shirt, suspenders, rubber or work boots and a cap. A small basket of fake apples or pumpkins sets the harvest scene. Braids, pigtails or messy hair suit either role. This pair suits outdoor festivals and hayrides, where a straw hat and boots make sense anyway.
28. Frog And Princess Couple Costume

Foam eyes on a headband are what make the frog, and they need to be light. I cut a foam ball in half, paint it, and glue it to a padded headband. The frog wears green pants, a green sweatshirt, matching sneakers, a pale green belly panel, soft green face makeup and a small gold crown. The princess wears a pink, blue or lavender dress, low heels, a delicate crown and a short cape for warmth, with curls or an easy updo, rosy makeup and a hint of shimmer. A paper storybook or a foam lily pad is the prop. It suits any gender combination, dressed up or casual.
29. Magician And Rabbit Couple Costume

The magician wears black trousers, a white shirt, a fitted black jacket, a bow tie, a cape and polished shoes, with neat hair, white gloves and an empty top hat. The rabbit wears a white sweater with white pants, or a fluffy white dress over tights, with white sneakers or boots, pink-lined ears, a cotton tail, whiskers and a rosy nose. Foam-board playing cards and a bunch of silk flowers add colour. Bunny ears flop over on a thin headband, so I slide a strip of millinery wire or a pipe cleaner into each ear. Keep the cape and ears light so both of you can wear them for hours.
30. Astronaut And Alien Couple Costume

Silver repeated on both outfits is what makes this read as one space story. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit, a silver belt, white sneakers and a painted cardboard backpack, with made-up mission patches and a clear helmet-style headpiece that leaves the whole face open. The alien wears metallic green or silver with matching boots, an antenna headband and an iridescent cape, with a little green face makeup, silver shadow and small face gems. A foam moon or a cardboard control panel is a shared prop. Skip flashing lights, which bother other guests. Jumpsuits are warm, but plan ahead for bathroom trips.
Wig, Face Paint and Costume Care Once the Night Is Over
Many of these looks use a wig or face paint, and how you look after them decides whether you can wear the pieces again next year.
Synthetic wigs
Cheap synthetic wigs shed and tangle out of the bag. Shake one out, then brush it gently from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb before you style it. Keep it away from ovens, candles and hair dryers, because synthetic fibre frizzes or melts with heat. Afterwards, rinse it in cool water with a little shampoo, let it dry on a stand or a bottle, and store it in a hairnet in a bag.
Getting the paint off
Take face paint off with an oil-based cleanser or a balm before you reach for soap and water, which tends to smear the colour around. Green, red and black can leave a faint tint for a day, so use a gentle cleanser twice rather than scrubbing hard. Wash pillowcases and collars that touched painted skin straight away, before the colour sets.
Storing the rest
Peel off any removable felt pieces, labels and stripes so the base clothes go back into your wardrobe. Keep headbands, crowns, ears and foam props flat in a box with tissue so they don't crush. Label the box with the pair's name, and next year you'll have most of a costume ready.
The Pieces You'll Keep Wearing After October
A couple costume is only good if you both like wearing it. That's why so many of the pairs here start in the wardrobe: black jeans, colourful shirts, dresses, boots and jackets you already own. Add one recognisable accessory each, a safe prop, the right hair and makeup that sits comfortably on your skin. Then try it all on together a week or so early, while there's still time to fix shoes that pinch, hems that drag or a headpiece that slips. Swap the roles, add coverage or change the colours until both of you are happy in it.
