Most women who ask me for an easy costume want the same thing: something clever that doesn't involve a sewing machine, a big shopping trip or a whole Saturday. My answer is nearly always the wardrobe. A plain dress, leggings, a good pair of jeans or an oversized shirt becomes a character once the hair, makeup, accessories, one prop and the shoes line up behind it. Below are classic Halloween looks, film and TV characters, animals, food, decade outfits and a few puns. All of them are comfortable and family-friendly, and I've noted where to adjust for your shape, your workplace or a long night on the doorstep handing out sweets.

Party, Office or Doorstep: Adjusting the Same Costume
Most of the looks below are flexible, and I'd decide where you'll wear yours before picking one. The same character changes a lot between a dance floor, a desk and a cold porch.
For a work day
Office costumes have to survive meetings and a commute. Wednesday, Holly Golightly, the librarian, Rosie and the smart cookie all pass as normal clothing with one clue added. Skip anything that drops glitter, sheds feathers or blocks a chair, and keep props small enough to sit on the desk. If there's a dress code, the costume should fit inside it, not sit on top of it.
For a party with dancing
Aerobics, disco, grunge and the flower child let you move. Wide wings and balloon clusters are fun for photos but a nuisance in a packed room, so wear them for the first hour and leave them on a hook later. Pick shoes you've already danced in.
For handing out sweets outside
Doorstep duty means hours standing in the cold. Choose a costume that hides layers: the witch under a cape, the scarecrow in flannel, the cowgirl with a vest, or the tourist in a windbreaker. Thermal leggings vanish under long skirts and dark trousers, and a warm drink on the step helps more than you'd think.
1. Black Cat Costume With All-Black Clothes

When you're short on time, the black cat is the one I'd reach for. A fitted black top over leggings, jeans or a midi skirt, and ankle boots or ballet flats. Felt triangle ears on a plain headband; a velvet headband grips the hair better than a shiny plastic one, so the ears don't creep back during the night. A soft fabric tail pinned inside the waistband. Hair loose, high or in two small buns. Liner for a tiny nose, whiskers and a little wing at each eye, and a ribbon or collar necklace at the throat. That's it, and it stays put.
2. Classic Witch Costume With Black Dress

A witch can look polished with nothing bought but the hat. A loose black maxi, a black skirt and blouse, or a sweater dress over opaque tights. Tie a purple, green or silver ribbon round the base of a pointed hat; it hides the cheap glued seam and makes it look chosen. Soft waves, or a little backcombing at the crown for volume. Smoky shadow and dark berry lips give drama without paint. A small broom or a notebook covered in fabric as a spellbook, buckled boots or lace-ups, and a velvet cape or long fringed shawl for warmth.
3. Scarecrow Costume With Plaid Shirt

This scarecrow is the tidier version, more autumn picnic than haunted field. A plaid button-down with denim overalls or relaxed jeans, plus felt squares on the knees or pockets. I'd pin the patches from the inside rather than taping them; knees bend all night and tape lifts at the corners. A straw hat over braided pigtails or a low messy bun. Brown stitch marks round the mouth, an orange triangle on the nose and warm blush. A loose bandana, a few silk sunflowers and brown boots or clean trainers. Raffia at the cuffs gives texture without the mess of real straw.
4. Rosie The Riveter Costume With Denim Shirt

Rosie the Riveter is a handful of basics and one confident pose. Roll the sleeves of a chambray or denim shirt and tuck it into high-waisted jeans or navy work trousers. The red polka-dot bandana is the key: fold it into a long band, tie it at the back of the neck and bring the ends up to knot on top of the head, so the knot sits front and centre. A vintage roll at the front looks great, but a high bun works too. Defined brows, black liner and a classic red lip. Lace-up boots, loafers or trainers depending on how long you'll stand. Roll one sleeve higher for the flexed-arm photo.
5. Wednesday Addams Costume With Black Dress

Wednesday is easy if you already own a simple black dress. Pick knee length with long sleeves and wear a white collared shirt underneath so the collar sits out over the neckline. If it won't show, I cut a removable collar from white felt and pin it in place; felt holds a crisp point without ironing. Black tights and loafers, lace-ups or low boots. Two neat braids, tied off tight so they hang straight down. A matte complexion with a little grey under the eyes. An old hardback or a small black umbrella. No coloured jewellery at all; the black-and-white is the whole point.
6. Holly Golightly Costume With Black Dress

Holly Golightly takes a little black dress and turns it glamorous. A sleeveless sheath, midi or modest shift with black flats or low kitten heels. Sweep the hair into a high bun; I backcomb the crown first and wrap the bun around it so it has real height, then add a sparkly clip or a small tiara. Strands of costume pearls, long black gloves and oversized sunglasses. Winged liner, soft brows, pink blush and a rosy lip. A small structured bag or an empty paper coffee cup is the prop. Throw on a cropped black cardigan if the night is cool.
7. Cowgirl Costume With Denim And Boots

A cowgirl look in denim is relaxed rather than theatrical. Tuck a plaid shirt, fitted tee or white button-down into bootcut jeans or a denim skirt. A wide belt and brown cowboy boots, though ordinary ankle boots do the job. A felt or straw hat and a red bandana at the neck. Loose waves, a side braid or low pigtails. Bronzer, mascara and a warm neutral lip. A coil of soft rope or a paper sheriff's badge as the prop. If you've never worn cowboy boots, wear them round the house for an evening first; stiff new ones rub at the back of the heel.
8. Tourist Costume With Vacation Clothes

The tourist's whole joke is clashing holiday clothes. A loud printed shirt with khaki shorts, relaxed trousers or a skort, tall white socks and trainers or walking sandals. Sun hat, sunglasses and a belt bag worn at the front. Hair in a practical ponytail or under a visor, with light makeup. A camera, real or cardboard, around the neck and a folded map in hand. I like a few attraction leaflets sticking out of the bag; it's the pile-up of details that lands the joke, never just one loud shirt. A windbreaker goes over the top on cold nights.
9. Mime Costume With Striped Shirt

A mime needs black and white and nothing more complicated. A striped long-sleeve top with black trousers, leggings or a suspender skirt, plus braces, white gloves and a small black beret. Ballet flats, loafers or lace-up boots. Hair in a low bun or under the beret. A pale foundation if you like, though I'd skip a full white face if your skin is sensitive. Thin black lines round the eyes and a small red lip. An empty black picture frame is a brilliant posing prop, and a red neck scarf gives one deliberate flash of colour.
10. Librarian Costume With Cardigan And Skirt

For an office, classroom or casual party, a librarian is hard to beat. Build it from a buttoned cardigan, a collared blouse and a pleated midi skirt or tailored trousers, with loafers, low heels or lace-up flats and ankle socks. A tidy bun held with pencils; stick the points in downwards and cap them with erasers so they don't scratch. Reading glasses, a rosy lip and softly defined brows. Two or three thin books tied with ribbon, a cardstock library card and a name badge. Earth tones, plaid or burgundy make it look intentional, otherwise it just reads as a normal workday.
11. Artist Costume With Paint-Splattered Shirt

A loose white shirt makes an easy artist once it's had some colour added. An oversized button-down or old tee with black leggings, relaxed jeans or overalls. Dab fabric paint on in small spots and let it dry overnight, or tape on paper paint splashes if the shirt has to stay clean. Trainers, canvas slip-ons or clogs. A messy bun skewered with clean paintbrushes, bristles pointing up and away from your face. Bright liner or tiny dots of colour at the temples. A cardboard palette with painted circles, plus a canvas apron and soft beret, and people get it from any angle.
12. 1980s Aerobics Costume With Leg Warmers

An eighties aerobics look is all colour and energy. Black leggings with a bright bodysuit, a fitted vest or an oversized off-the-shoulder sweatshirt, then contrasting leg warmers, a wide fabric belt and clean high-tops. A high side ponytail with a big scrunchie, or a wide sweatband. Vivid blue or purple shadow, pink blush and gloss. Plastic bangles and small hoops. A water bottle or a rolled mat as the prop, and bike shorts over the leggings if you want more coverage. I build it around two neon colours and one dark one; four neons together start to look like a kids' party.
13. 1990s Grunge Costume With Plaid Shirt

Nineties grunge is the comfiest costume on this list. A faded band-style tee or plain graphic shirt with ripped straight-leg jeans, an oversized flannel tied at the waist and a black knit beanie. Lace-up boots or worn canvas trainers. Leave the hair loose and tousled or in a messy half-up bun. Smudged brown or charcoal liner and a muted berry lip. A painted cardboard cassette player is a funny prop. The difference between costume and Saturday clothes is how faded it looks, so I pick the most washed-out pieces in the wardrobe and keep everything dark.
14. Disco Queen Costume With Metallic Clothes

Disco is made for party lights. Metallic wide-leg trousers with a fitted black top, or a sparkly jumpsuit or sequin midi. Platforms with a manageable heel or silver ankle boots. Big curls, a high-volume blow-out or a rounded wig. Metallic shadow, plenty of blush and glossy lips. Hoops and stacked bangles that move when you do. A mirrored ball ornament or a star clutch as the prop, and a cropped faux-fur jacket for warmth. Sequins scratch the inside of your arms over a long night, so I'd pick a sequin piece with a soft lining or wear a thin layer underneath. Keep it to silver, gold, black and one bright colour.
15. Flower Child Costume With Flared Jeans

A flower child is the costume you can keep wearing all year. Flared jeans with a peasant blouse, crochet top or floral tunic, a fringed vest, and brown boots, clogs or flat sandals. Loose natural waves with a braided headband or a simple fabric flower crown. Fresh glowy skin, peach blush and a few tiny flowers drawn beside one eye. Round sunglasses, long beads and plenty of bracelets. Silk daisies or a cardboard peace sign. Fabric flower crowns slide on fine hair, so I tie a little ribbon at each end and knot it under the hair at the nape. A floral maxi works just as well with the same extras.
16. Greek Goddess Costume With White Dress

A Greek goddess starts with a white maxi or a draped bedsheet. If you wrap fabric, do it over a fitted white vest and shorts, and pin it at the shoulders with large safety pins from the inside so the drape can't slip. A gold ribbon or braided cord at the waist and gold flat sandals or ballet flats. Soft curls gathered into a low updo. Tuck silk leaves into a plain headband for a laurel crown. Gold shadow, highlighted cheeks and a neutral lip. Cuff bracelets, a lightweight goblet or a small scroll, and a white shawl over one shoulder for more drape.
17. Garden Fairy Costume With Floral Dress

A garden fairy is a floral dress plus wings, nothing more. A flowing midi or maxi in green, lavender, pink or pale blue, with ballet flats, soft ankle boots or sandals tied with ribbon. Loose curls or a braided half-up with tiny silk flowers woven through. Shimmer shadow, pink blush and small white dots at the outer eyes. Light wings on soft elastic straps; I sew the straps to a ribbon that ties at the waist too, so the wings don't flop backwards. A wand from a dowel topped with a flower and a little vine belt. Keep every accessory rounded, because fairies end up in crowded rooms with kids.
18. Butterfly Costume With Colorful Wings

A butterfly gets its impact from the wings, so keep the base plain. A black long-sleeve top with leggings, a jumpsuit or a modest skater dress, and black flats or boots. Large fabric wings in orange, blue, pink or purple. Fabric wings beat cardboard for an adult party: they fold, they don't crush in the car and you can sit back in a chair. Pipe-cleaner antennae with rounded tips on a headband, and hair sleek so it doesn't tangle. Eyeshadow to match the wings with small dots at the temples. Before you go, fold the wings back and try a doorway.
19. Ladybug Costume With Red Dress

A ladybug is one of the quickest costumes here if you own a red dress. A red sweater dress, skater dress or red top with a matching skirt, then black felt circles spaced evenly over it. Felt circles cut with a cup as a template look much neater than freehand ones. Opaque black tights, flat black shoes or ankle boots. A high bun or two small buns under short, rounded antennae. A clean black wing of liner, red cheeks and a matching lip. Small red-and-black wings, a flower bag or a large silk leaf, and a black cardigan when you need warmth.
20. Bumblebee Costume With Striped Clothes

A bumblebee comes together from yellow and black separates. A striped top with a black skirt, yellow trousers or leggings; if you don't own stripes, sew or pin black felt strips across a yellow tee. Black tights and trainers, flats or boots. A ponytail or two round buns under a soft antenna headband. Golden shadow, black liner and a peachy lip. Sheer wings give the shape, and a silk flower is the prop. Check every wire end on bought wings and tape over anything sharp. A yellow cardigan or black jacket over the top for outdoor nights still keeps the stripes visible.
21. Strawberry Costume With Red Dress

A plain red dress turns into a strawberry with handmade seeds and a leafy crown. Cut small teardrops from white or pale yellow felt and fix them across the dress, all pointing the same way, which is what makes them read as seeds rather than confetti. Green tights for colour or black for a quieter base. Red flats, white trainers or green ankle boots. Soft curls, a high ponytail or a bun beneath a green felt leaf crown. Pink blush, glossy red lips and a few tiny freckles. A small green basket, and a green cardigan knotted over the shoulders works as the leaves and a warm layer.
22. Bunch Of Grapes Costume With Purple Balloons

Grapes are funny and simpler than they look if you plan the balloons. A purple long-sleeve top with matching leggings, joggers or a soft dress. Use small balloons and blow them up only about two-thirds of the way; they're tougher and the cluster looks tighter. Tie them on with loops of string through a vest you can take off, leaving arms and knees free. Purple trainers or neutral flats, a bun and a green felt leaf headband. Lavender shadow and a berry lip. A silk vine or green basket as the prop, and a few spare balloons in your bag for the ones that pop.
23. Raining Cats And Dogs Costume With Raincoat

Raining cats and dogs is a pun you dress for. A bright raincoat over a simple top and leggings, plus rain boots or black trainers. Hang small plush cats and dogs from the spokes of a clear umbrella with string; I tie them at different lengths so they look like they're falling, not lined up. Braids, a ponytail or a low bun that fits under the umbrella. Blue shadow and a few tiny teardrops on the cheeks. A cotton-wool cloud headband adds another clue. Cap the umbrella tips and keep it closed in crowded rooms, where the dangling animals will hit people.
24. Smart Cookie Costume With Graduation Cap

A smart cookie is a pun on comfortable clothes. A tan or brown dress, a jumper set or a matching top and trousers, then dark brown felt circles scattered over it as chocolate chips. Uneven chips cut slightly lumpy look far more like a cookie than perfect circles. Loafers, ballet flats or brown trainers. Hair straight, waved or under a black cardstock graduation cap. Defined brows, mascara and a warm nude lip. A stack of notebooks, a pencil or a cardboard diploma with ribbon. The cap and books make the joke clear, and the plain base keeps it fine for school or work.
25. Social Butterfly Costume With Phone Accessories

The social butterfly is a modern pun without a complicated outfit. A bright dress, colourful jumpsuit or blouse and skirt with comfortable heels, flats or boots. Light butterfly wings and an antenna headband. Loose waves or a sleek ponytail, with colourful shadow matched to the wings. Pin on printed paper message bubbles, notification icons and friendly emojis; use generic symbols only, never your real handle or anything personal. A cardboard phone or a bag decorated as a blank screen. I size the bubbles at least as big as your palm, since small ones just look like stickers from a metre away.
26. Error 404 Costume Not Found Shirt

Error 404 is the costume for when you have five minutes. A plain white or black tee with jeans, leggings or casual trousers. Print or write “Error 404: Costume Not Found” on paper and fix it to the shirt with fabric-safe tape. Thick black marker on white card reads best; I'd write it in capitals and keep it to two lines so it can be read across a room. Clean trainers or slip-ons make the minimal look seem deliberate. Everyday hair and natural makeup, or a touch of silver liner. A cardboard laptop screen and a few square paper pixels down one sleeve finish it.
27. Friendly Ghost Costume With White Clothes

A friendly ghost is far more wearable than a sheet over the head. A flowing white maxi, an oversized white jumper with white trousers, or a layered white skirt and blouse, with white trainers, ballet flats or pale boots. Temporary white hair colour, a white wig, or your own hair in soft airy waves. White hair spray goes patchy on dark hair and falls onto shoulders, so I'd only use it on light hair. Pale face makeup used sparingly, grey shadow round the eyes and a soft pearl highlight. A paper lantern or a cheerful sign, plus a sheer tulle cape for floating movement. Keep every hem off the floor.
28. Mummy Costume With White Fabric Wraps

This mummy goes over ordinary clothes and stays comfortable. A beige or white long-sleeve top with matching leggings or joggers. Wrap torn strips of old sheet or gauze loosely around the arms, torso and legs, pinning each section with the pin heads facing outwards and away from skin. Wrap a few strips over the tops of beige trainers or flat boots too, which ties the look together at the feet. Messy bun or a loosely wrapped headband. Taupe shadow and pale foundation for the dusty look, no wounds. A cardboard tablet covered in symbols. Leave knees, elbows, face and hands free.
29. Mermaid Costume With Shimmering Skirt

A mermaid without a tail is the one I recommend to anyone with stairs to climb. A fitted turquoise, lavender or sea-green top with a metallic maxi, a sequin pencil skirt or scale-print leggings. A pencil skirt shortens your stride badly, so if you go for one, check it has a back slit or choose the leggings. Silver flats, jewelled sandals or ankle boots. Loose beachy waves with pearl clips or small shells. Blue, green and purple shadow and a good swipe of highlighter. A shell purse or a star-topped sea wand, and an iridescent scarf around the shoulders for movement.
30. Pop Art Woman Costume With Bright Clothes

Pop art is a makeup costume over a bright outfit. A primary-colour dress, a fitted top with a contrasting skirt, or high-waisted trousers and a dotted blouse, with solid heels, flats or boots and a matching bag. Smooth ponytail, curled bob or polished waves. Outline the brows, nose, jaw and contours in black liner, then add the dots. I make the dots with the flat end of a cotton bud dipped in skin-safe makeup, which gives even circles far faster than drawing. A vivid lip, large round earrings and a wide belt. Carry a blank foam-board speech bubble you can reuse next year.
How a Pun Costume Gets Its Laugh
The wordplay costumes here, from raining cats and dogs to the smart cookie, the social butterfly and Error 404, live or die on whether people get the joke in two seconds. I give each one two clues that only make sense together. A cookie alone is a cookie; a cookie in a graduation cap is a smart cookie. Wings alone are a butterfly; wings covered in message bubbles are a social butterfly.
Size matters more than neatness. Lettering and symbols should be readable from a few steps away in dim light, so go big, use dark on light and keep text short. Attach paper pieces with pins or tape on the back so they lie flat and don't curl when the room warms up. And bring a spare: a pun costume with its main clue torn off just looks like an odd outfit.
Your Wardrobe Probably Holds Five of These Already
Every one of these starts with simple clothing, easy makeup and a couple of handmade extras. Before you buy anything, go through your wardrobe for solid-colour dresses, leggings, button-down shirts, comfortable shoes and jewellery you already wear. Then choose one clear clue: wings, a hat, a decorated headband or a light prop. Fix things on securely, pick layers you can breathe in and shoes that suit your plans for the night. Hemlines, coverage and colours can all shift to suit your body and your comfort. Done that way, even a costume you threw together after work looks considered.
