A first convention costume has two jobs: people need to know who you are, and you need to still be comfortable at four in the afternoon. The thirty characters below are ones I'd happily help someone build for that first outing, from anime heroines and game favourites to comic icons, animated leads and fantasy royalty. For each I've listed the base garment, the wig or hair, the makeup, the accessories and shoes you can actually walk in. Many come together from ready-made pieces and thrift finds with a little sewing on top. Lengthen a skirt, raise a neckline or swap the shoes as you like; as long as the colours and outline stay, the character survives.

What a Full Convention Day Does to a Costume
A costume that looks right in the mirror at home can fall apart after six hours of standing, queueing, sitting on hall floors and posing. Before choosing, I'd think less about how the character looks and more about how the outfit behaves. Jumpsuits look sleek but mean undressing for every bathroom break, so a two-piece version or a long zip is worth considering. Gowns need a hem that clears the floor in your actual shoes. Anything glued only to stretch fabric, whether foam or vinyl or felt, will start lifting the first time you bend.
- Wear the full costume at home for at least an hour, including sitting and climbing stairs.
- Break in your shoes for a week; new boots are the most common reason people change out by lunch.
- Sew a small hidden pocket into a seam for a card and phone if the character doesn't carry a bag.
- Check you can see your feet and the people around you with every headpiece, mask or wig on.
1. Sailor Moon Cosplay With Sailor Uniform

Sailor Moon suits anyone who loves bright colour and classic magical-girl shapes. Start with a white sailor bodysuit or fitted top with a blue collar and matching pleated skirt, then add the big red chest bow, the yellow waist accent, elbow-length white gloves and red knee-high boots. The blonde wig needs two buns with long pigtails, and I always buy one with the buns as separate clip-on pieces; winding a single long wig into buns yourself pulls it lopsided. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a soft pink lip, then the gold tiara, red hair ornaments, crescent earrings and a brooch. If tall boots pinch, red ankle boots with good insoles still read correctly.
2. Wednesday Addams Cosplay With Black Dress

Wednesday Addams needs almost no sewing, which is why I point beginners to her. Look for a knee-length long-sleeved black dress with a crisp white collar and cuffs; if the collar is missing, a detachable one is an easy evening project in cotton poplin. Black tights and sturdy loafers or low platforms will carry you through a long day. Part the black wig sharply down the centre and braid it tight, finishing the ends with clear elastics so they don't fuzz. Pale foundation, soft brows, grey shadow and a muted berry lip set her expression. A small black satchel and a black manicure are enough, and the dress goes straight back into your everyday wardrobe afterwards.
3. Barbie Cowgirl Cosplay With Pink Flared Pants

Barbie's cowgirl look is loud in the best way, and most of it is thrift and trim. Wear a sleeveless pink vest over a fitted white top with high-waisted pink flares decorated with stars or swirls, plus a bandana, white cowgirl hat and heart earrings. Go with a long blonde wig in loose waves or your own hair with a sleek side part, and glowy pink makeup with gloss and fluttery lashes. White western boots are right, though platform sneakers walk better. Iron-on appliqués peel at the edges on stretchy flares, so I add a few hand stitches around each one after pressing. A tiny pink shoulder bag carries your phone.
4. Princess Peach Cosplay With Pink Ball Gown

Princess Peach is the full princess fantasy, and the gown is where your effort goes. You want a floor-length pink dress with puffed sleeves, a fitted bodice and a darker pink overskirt or hip panels, worn with white elbow gloves and comfortable flats hidden under the hem. Hem the dress to just clear the floor in your actual shoes; an inch too long and you'll be stepping on it on every escalator. A long blonde wig with side-swept bangs and soft curled ends, peachy blush, a blue-toned eye and glossy lips suit her. Finish with a jewelled gold crown, blue earrings and a blue brooch. I'd choose a layered petticoat over a hoop; hoops are hard to manage in crowded halls.
5. Princess Zelda Cosplay With White Fantasy Dress

Princess Zelda layers up nicely and rewards patient finishing. The base is a long white dress with a structured purple bodice, gold edging and a decorative front panel, with fitted white leggings or shorts underneath so you can move freely. Her long blonde wig takes small side braids, pointed ear cuffs and a jewelled forehead piece. Keep makeup soft: neutral base, a touch of gold shadow, pink lips and highlighted cheeks. Gold bracelets, a blue pendant, a belt and flat brown or gold boots finish her. I cut the gold details from craft foam and seal it before painting, because unsealed foam soaks up paint and turns blotchy. Carry a small book or embroidered pouch rather than a big prop.
6. 2B Cosplay With Black Embroidered Dress

2B is all about crisp black and white. Her dress has a high neck, long bell sleeves, subtle embroidery and a full skirt worn over opaque black shorts, with thigh-high socks and low-heeled boots that actually support you. The short white bob with side-swept bangs gives the outline, and white synthetic wigs show oil and makeup quickly, so keep foundation off the bangs. For the blindfold I use a strip of black satin backed with a sheer mesh window, which lets you see without looking any different in photos. Porcelain foundation, cool contour, silver-grey eyes and a nude lip suit her, plus black gloves, a feather cuff and a small pouch. Lightweight fabrics help in a warm hall.
7. Nezuko Cosplay With Pink Kimono

Nezuko is mostly about getting the layers right. Start with a pink geometric-print kimono-style robe under a dark brown haori, held with a red-and-white checkered sash and a wide obi. Dark leggings, white leg wraps and flat sandals with cushioned soles keep you comfortable. Her long black wig has warm orange tips and a small pink ribbon on one side; if your wig came plain, buy one already tipped rather than dyeing synthetic fibre. Gentle rosy makeup suits her. I hang a lightweight bamboo-look mouthpiece around the neck and only lift it for photos, so you can breathe and talk the rest of the day. Printed cotton for the robe is easier to sew than polyester satin.
8. Mitsuri Kanroji Cosplay With Demon Slayer Uniform

Mitsuri Kanroji is mostly about the hair. Her uniform is a dark button-front top with a pleated skirt, plus an opaque camisole or modesty panel underneath if you want more coverage, then a white haori and lime-striped thigh-high socks. Sandals are accurate, but matching sneakers save your feet. The wig has to blend pink into green and sit in three thick braids, and I'd buy it pre-dyed; home-dyed synthetic tends to go patchy. Pink eyeshadow, green liner, rosy blush and glossy lips match the palette, along with pale green nails. A small charm or themed pouch is all she needs, and the coverage is easy to adjust without losing her.
9. Ochaco Uraraka Cosplay With Hero Suit

Ochaco Uraraka's hero suit is a good first foam project. Start with a fitted black jumpsuit or a long-sleeved athletic set, then add white and pink panels at the torso, wrists and legs. I use thin craft foam for these because it bends with you; thick EVA would look better on a shelf but fights you every time you sit. Wear white boots or sneakers with removable pink covers on top, and a short brown bob with curved bangs. Keep the makeup young and fresh with pink blush, brown liner and natural brows. Glue each foam piece onto a fabric backing and stitch that on, rather than gluing foam straight onto stretch fabric, where it pops off once the fabric stretches.
10. Power Cosplay With White Shirt And Horns

Power is about as low-construction as anime cosplay gets. Wear a slightly oversized white button-down, black tie and tailored black trousers, roll the sleeves loosely and add black sneakers, loafers or ankle boots. Her long pale-blonde wig needs choppy uneven bangs, which I'd trim yourself with thinning scissors once it's on your head. The red horn headband carries the character, so look for horns with a wide base that sit on the head without tipping. I'd skip gold lenses unless an eye professional has fitted you for them; gold shadow around the eye gets the idea across. Sharp liner, peach blush, a dark jacket for between photos and a small crossbody bag finish her.
11. Makima Cosplay With Black Office Suit

Makima turns plain officewear into one of the most recognisable looks of recent anime. Pair a crisp white button-down and black tie with fitted black trousers and a tailored blazer, with black loafers or low block-heel pumps. The copper-red wig sits in one long braid with straight bangs framing the face, and braiding it a day early lets the waves settle. Matte foundation, warm brown shadow, peach blush and a muted red lip are all she needs. Golden lenses are optional, and only from a properly fitted, reputable source. Press the trousers with a sharp crease and keep the shirt neatly tucked; Makima looks wrong the second she gets rumpled. A slim folder is her prop.
12. Anya Forger Cosplay With Black School Dress

An adult Anya Forger keeps her cute details in a grown-up silhouette. Choose a knee-length black A-line dress with long sleeves, gold trim and a white collar, with opaque black tights and polished loafers or flat ankle boots. Her short pastel-pink wig needs soft bangs and curved side pieces, and the black-and-gold horn clips are what make her Anya. I glue those clips onto small hair combs rather than plain clips, since combs grip a wig far better. Rosy cheeks, rounded liner, soft pink lips and a few drawn freckles suit her. A plush toy or school satchel is plenty, and white gloves are optional.
13. Asuka Langley Cosplay With Red Pilot Suit

Asuka Langley's red plugsuit looks clean and futuristic over a simple base. I start from a long-sleeved red jumpsuit in stretch athletic fabric, which gives more coverage than a thin catsuit, then add white, black and green panels in foam or fabric. Removable adhesive works for one day, but if you'll wear it again, stitch the panels on. Red sneakers or flat ankle boots with matching panels finish the legs. A long auburn wig with face-framing bangs and her red interface clips complete the hair, with defined liner, warm blush and a coral lip. Wear the whole suit around the house for an hour before the event and check every panel; that's when the weak edges show.
14. Rei Ayanami Cosplay With White Pilot Suit

Rei Ayanami is the cooler, quieter plugsuit. Use an opaque white jumpsuit or fitted athletic set, since thin white stretch fabric shows everything underneath, then add black, grey, orange and green panels in flexible fabric paint or thin foam. White sneakers or ankle boots keep the colour running head to toe. Her short powder-blue wig has textured bangs and slightly longer pieces by the cheeks. Keep makeup understated: smooth base, grey-blue shadow, soft liner and a nude pink lip, with slim wrist cuffs and small hair pieces. If a full fitted suit feels exposing, a short white jacket over it is a fair, honest compromise.
15. D.Va Cosplay With Blue Gaming Suit

D.Va mixes sporty gaming detail with blue, pink and white. Begin with an opaque navy jumpsuit or a matching athletic top and leggings, then add pink stripes, white chest panels and small graphic patches in stretch heat-transfer vinyl or fabric paint. Ordinary vinyl cracks on leggings, so make sure it's the stretch kind. White high-tops with pink laces are the easiest finish. Her long dark brown wig wears loose with soft waves under a bright pink headset. The face is the giveaway: sharp black liner and the pink cheek stripes, which I'd draw with a cream liner and set with powder so they don't wander. Fingerless gloves and a controller-shaped purse are plenty.
16. Chun-Li Cosplay With Blue Qipao Dress

Chun-Li's blue-and-gold outfit gives you a classic fighting-game shape. Choose a blue qipao-inspired dress with gold trim, short puffed sleeves and side panels over opaque shorts, then add brown tights and white lace-up boots with low heels or flat soles. The two high buns sit on a dark wig, each covered with white ribbon ornaments, and I sew the bun covers from cotton rather than buying stiff plastic ones that crack. Makeup leans on strong brows, winged liner, rosy cheeks and a berry lip. Her spiked bracelets are far kinder in lightweight foam. Practise a few balanced stances, and lengthen the skirt or add leggings if that suits you better.
17. Cammy Cosplay With Green Military Outfit

Cammy keeps her green palette even in a more covered version. Wear a sleeveless green utility romper over opaque black leggings or fitted shorts, with a red beret and red fingerless gloves. Black combat-style boots with cushioned soles carry you through the day. Her long blonde wig sits in two smooth braids over the shoulders. Fresh makeup, defined brows, green liner, peach blush and a neutral lip fit her. Add removable green leg panels and a small belt with fabric pouches. Shape the beret with a damp hand and let it dry on a bowl; a flat beret reads as a cap from a distance. Leave enough ease in the romper to sit down.
18. Lara Croft Cosplay With Tank Top And Cargo Shorts

Lara Croft is for anyone who would rather wear real clothing than a costume. Pair a fitted teal or olive tank with high-waisted brown cargo shorts and a sturdy belt, add opaque tights if you like, then thick socks and comfortable hiking boots. A long brown wig or your own hair in a single braid or ponytail suits her. Bronzed cheeks, smudged brown liner, defined brows and a neutral lip give the outdoorsy face. Fingerless gloves, a small backpack, a rolled map and a clip-on compass finish her. I rub the shorts' seams and hem with fine sandpaper for a worn edge; it reads as adventuring without fake dirt that rubs onto everyone else.
19. Black Widow Cosplay With Black Jumpsuit

Black Widow looks sleek and capable with no big props at all. Start with an opaque black jumpsuit or a fitted long-sleeved top and pants, then add a wide belt with red accents, light wrist cuffs and a cropped black jacket for coverage. Flat black combat boots keep the line clean. Choose a shoulder-length red wig in loose waves, or a braided red style for a later film version. Defined brows, smoky grey eyes, light contour and a muted red lip suit her. Red hourglass details look neatest as sewn-on fabric patches rather than paint. Make sure the jumpsuit zip runs far enough down to make bathroom breaks manageable, and carry a zip pouch for essentials.
20. Supergirl Cosplay With Blue Dress And Red Cape

Supergirl's primary colours make her easy to spot across a busy hall. A long-sleeved blue skater dress or fitted tunic over opaque blue leggings is the base, then a red belt, red knee-high boots and a light red cape. Attach the cape at the shoulder seams with snaps or strong hook tape rather than tying it at the throat; a tied cape pulls at your neck every time someone steps on it. A long blonde wig in soft waves gives the classic look, and a high ponytail reads more modern. Clean glowing makeup with a red or pink lip suits her, and the chest emblem works in fabric or flexible foam. A small blue wristlet holds your phone.
21. Wonder Woman Cosplay With Red And Blue Armor

Wonder Woman mixes heroic colour with ancient-armour detail. Wear a red corset-style top over a supportive red bodysuit, then a blue pleated skirt or tailored shorts with white stars, and red-and-gold knee-high boots. Her long dark brown wig wants plenty of wave, and the gold star tiara sits across the forehead. Bronzed makeup, strong brows, black liner and a classic red lip finish her face. I make the cuffs and belt from EVA foam, heat-shape them round, then prime before the metallic paint, which keeps the shine without the weight. A red cape is optional for cooler halls. Round off every edge, and add leggings, sleeves or a longer skirt as you like.
22. Catwoman Cosplay With Black Catsuit

Catwoman can be put together almost entirely from black basics you already own. Choose an opaque black jumpsuit, or a fitted turtleneck with faux-leather leggings, and add a cropped moto jacket for texture. Black ankle or knee boots with low heels let you wear it for hours. A black bob wig under a soft cat-ear headpiece works, or pull your own hair into a low bun. Smoky eyes, sharp liner, sculpted cheeks and a deep berry lip suit her, with black gloves, a wide belt and a small crossbody pouch. Faux leather doesn't breathe at all, so I'd only choose those leggings for a cool venue. Skip anything spiky that might snag someone else's costume.
23. Poison Ivy Cosplay With Green Leaf Dress

Poison Ivy can be lush and green without being revealing. Start with a fitted green midi dress, romper or long-sleeved bodysuit under a leafy tulle skirt, then attach artificial ivy around the neckline, waist and cuffs. I tack the leaves on with a few loose hand stitches rather than glue, so they come off cleanly and the base garment survives for another year. Green tights and forest-green ankle boots carry the colour down. A long red wig in loose curls with a few small leaves woven through, emerald shadow, winged liner and a deep red lip complete her. Use silk or plastic foliage only; real plants wilt by midday and some irritate skin.
24. Starfire Cosplay With Purple Space Outfit

Starfire's purple and silver give you a bright, friendly space look. Wear a sleeveless purple mini dress or tunic over opaque lavender leggings, then add a silver belt and metallic trim at the neckline, with purple knee-high or ankle boots. Her wig is very long red or copper with plenty of volume, and long wigs that size tangle at the nape where they rub a collar, so brush them out once mid-day. Glowing base, violet shadow, defined lashes, coral blush and a pink lip suit her. Silver wrist cuffs, a jewelled collar and small green gems add contrast. A light purple cape or shoulder piece adds coverage if you want it.
25. Kim Possible Cosplay With Green Cargo Pants

Kim Possible is the choice when comfort comes first. A fitted black mock-neck top, loose olive cargo pants and a brown utility belt make the base, with black combat boots or lug-sole ankle boots. Her long auburn wig has dramatic side-swept layers, or wear your own red hair a little tousled. Fresh makeup with green liner, peach blush and a nude lip fits her. Black gloves, a belt pouch and a small flip-phone prop cut from painted cardboard finish the look. Real cargo pockets are this costume's quiet advantage; you can carry phone, cards and lip balm without any bag at all, so check they close securely.
26. Shego Cosplay With Green And Black Jumpsuit

Shego's look is all sharp green-and-black blocking. Start with an opaque black jumpsuit or a matching top and leggings, then add bright green panels down one sleeve, one leg, the waist and torso, deliberately uneven. I cut those panels on the same stretch direction as the base fabric; if the stretch runs the other way, the seams pucker the moment you move. Black ankle boots with green laces or covers finish the legs. A long layered black wig, pale base, arched brows, smoky green eyes, winged liner and a dark berry lip set her face. Green gloves and a slim belt complete her, and a slightly shiny green fabric helps the panels show up in photos.
27. Velma Cosplay With Orange Sweater And Red Skirt

Velma is one of the easiest characters to recreate from closet basics. Pair an oversized orange turtleneck with a knee-length red pleated skirt, orange knee socks or tights, and comfortable red loafers. A short brown bob with full bangs and thick square glasses do the identifying. Keep makeup natural with soft brown liner, warm blush and a muted coral lip, and carry an old book, magnifying glass or small orange satchel. Pop the lenses out of costume glasses if they distort your vision; nobody can tell in photos. Choose a light knit rather than heavy wool if the hall runs warm. She pairs naturally with Daphne for a group.
28. Daphne Cosplay With Purple Mini Dress

Daphne brings a polished sixties shape. Choose a long-sleeved purple A-line dress with a slightly lighter hem panel, pink or lavender tights, and purple ankle boots with a block heel or flat sole. Her long red wig wants soft volume, curled ends and a matching purple headband. The bright green scarf is the colour contrast that tells people who she is, so tie it neatly and pin it at the back so it stays put. Lilac shadow, defined lashes, pink blush and a glossy coral lip suit her. A small structured purple handbag is the right prop. She works on her own and pairs naturally with Velma or a full mystery group.
29. Elsa Cosplay With Blue Cape Dress

Elsa's icy blue gown sparkles nicely under bright event lighting. Start with a fitted pale-blue dress with a sequined bodice and an ankle-length skirt, then add a sheer blue cape with snowflake appliqués. Sequinned fabric is scratchy under the arms, so I line the bodice with a soft cotton or tricot before wearing it all day. Silver flats or low glittery shoes sit under the hem comfortably. Her platinum wig goes into a thick side braid with loose face-framing strands. Cool silver eyeshadow, defined lashes, pink blush and a berry-pink lip suit her, with crystal earrings and a snowflake pin. Avoid loose glitter, which ends up on everyone you hug.
30. Alice In Wonderland Cosplay With Blue Dress

Alice in Wonderland is storybook simple in blue and white. Wear a knee-length blue dress with short puffed sleeves under a crisp white apron, white tights and black Mary Janes with supportive soles. A long blonde wig in soft waves with a black ribbon headband near the crown finishes the hair. Keep makeup sweet: rosy cheeks, a touch of light blue shadow and a pink lip. Carry a small illustrated book, a white rabbit plush or an oversized key. The apron is the easiest thing in this post to sew yourself, a rectangle with a bib and long ties, and starching it makes it look properly crisp. A pale blue cardigan warms her up.
Foam, Glue and Fabric for Your First Build
Several looks above lean on panels, cuffs and armour pieces, and the materials matter more than the pattern. Thin craft foam bends with the body and suits panels on plugsuits and hero suits. Thicker EVA foam heat-shapes into curves for cuffs, belts and tiaras, but it needs sealing before paint or it turns blotchy and cracks.
- Hot glue is quick but lets go in the cold and on stretch fabric; contact cement holds foam to foam far better, used outdoors with good ventilation.
- Glue foam onto a stable fabric backing first, then stitch that backing onto the garment.
- Use stretch heat-transfer vinyl or fabric paint on leggings and bodysuits; ordinary vinyl cracks.
- Line scratchy fabrics like sequins and metallic lamé where they touch skin.
A Small Kit That Saves the Afternoon
Something always loosens or splits by mid-afternoon. I pack safety pins in two sizes, a needle already threaded in black and one in white, a few strips of fashion tape, a small tube of fabric glue, spare bobby pins, a wide-tooth comb, blotting papers and a pressed powder. Add plasters for your heels and a water bottle, because dehydration ruins a day faster than any wardrobe malfunction. It all fits in a pencil case.
Your First Costume Doesn't Need to Be Perfect
Start with a character you genuinely like and an outfit you'll feel good wearing all day. The list above runs from closet-based looks and anime uniforms to fantasy gowns, game outfits and comic classics, so there's room for every skill level. Breathable fabrics, secure accessories, cushioned shoes and clear vision matter far more than exact accuracy or expensive materials. In my sewing, the right colours, the right hair and two or three good details are what tell people who you are. Adjust everything to your body, budget, skills and venue, and let your own touches show.
