Clown is one of the most flexible costumes a man can wear. It goes colorful, sharp, ridiculous or a little unsettling depending on what you put with it. I style a lot of men who say they hate costumes, and clown is often the one that wins them over, because you can wear it baggy, tailored or as closet basics. Below you'll find circus performers, old-time entertainers, playful characters and spooky carnival looks, none of them gory. Each one gives you a clothing base, shoes you can stand in, the face, the hair and a prop that fits in one hand. The usual clown ingredients are oversized shapes, bold pattern, a ruff and big shoes, and I'll show you how to tone each one up or down.

Thrift Sizes for a Baggy Clown Suit
Most men's clown looks depend on clothes that are deliberately too big, and there's a right and a wrong kind of too big. The wrong kind slips off the shoulders, trips you on the stairs and comes down at the waist. When I shop for a baggy clown, I size up in width, never in length.
- Jackets: go two or three sizes up, but check that the shoulder seam doesn't fall past the top of your arm by more than a few centimeters, or the sleeves swallow your hands.
- Trousers: buy wide, then hold them up with braces or a cord threaded through the inside of the waistband. Roll or tape the hems so they sit just above the shoe.
- Shirts: a regular fit in a loud print is usually enough. Oversized shirts under an oversized jacket just bunch.
- Jumpsuits: sit down and lift your arms in the fitting room. A one-piece that's too short in the body pulls at the crotch every time you bend.
If you're broad in the chest or tall, tailored ideas like the dapper, ringmaster or 1920s clown often look better than forced bagginess, and they fit the clothes you already own.
1. Classic Circus Clown Costume

The classic circus clown is the one everybody pictures: a striped, dotted or patchwork jumpsuit, a white ruff, big fabric buttons, striped socks and roomy red shoes. A curly rainbow wig gives the round head shape, and on short hair, temporary color spray is a lighter option. I keep the white base thin, just around the eyes and mouth, because a full white face on a man with any stubble looks gray by the second hour. Red round cheeks, arched brows, a foam nose and a small bowler. Juggling balls or a rubber chicken give you something to do with your hands.
2. Red And White Clown Costume

Red and white keeps a clown focused. White overalls or loose white trousers over a red-and-white striped shirt, three large red felt circles down the bib, red suspenders and a pleated collar. Felt circles stay on cotton drill with a few stitches; glue tends to let go once the bib starts flexing. A short red wig or red spray ties the head in. Keep the white paint to the eye and mouth areas, add a red nose, thin red brows and small diamonds under the eyes. I'd wear red high-tops here, since they're far easier to walk in than oversized clown shoes.
3. Rainbow Clown Costume

Rainbow clown is maximum color, so the job is stopping it from turning into noise. A rainbow-striped jumpsuit, or bright overalls over a multicolored long-sleeve shirt, then mismatched striped socks, colorful sneakers and big pom-poms down the chest. A full rainbow wig with a tiny cone hat on a headband. Because the clothes are so loud, I keep the face simple: white around the eyes, colored lids, pink cheeks and a curved red smile. Juggling scarves are light and easy to carry. It's a happy pick for a parade or a family party.
4. Black And White Pierrot Clown Costume

Pierrot is the alternative for a man who'd rather look dramatic than goofy. Loose black trousers with a flowing white tunic and big black pom-poms, a wide pleated collar, white gloves and black ankle boots with soles you trust. A fitted black skullcap or neat dark hair. On the face, a pale base, thin black brows, a small painted mouth and one teardrop. I wouldn't cover the whole face if you'll be in it for hours; a lighter base is more comfortable and it cracks less on a moving face. A soft black cone hat and a white fabric flower, and you're set for a theatrical party.
5. Funny Oversized Clown Costume

Oversized clothing is the quickest way to say comedy. I'd go to a thrift store and buy a plaid jacket and trousers two or three sizes up, then a bright button-up and suspenders hitched deliberately uneven. A huge bow tie and foam buttons push the cartoon proportions. Belt the trousers inside with a cord around your waist so they can't drop when you walk. Messy orange wig, mini bowler, round red nose, and big brows and smile painted over a light foundation. Padded shoe covers over supportive sneakers keep you safe on stairs. Go easy on the squeaky horn indoors.
6. Sad Clown Costume

The sad clown runs on soft color and a downturned face. Loose gray trousers, a faded blue shirt, dark suspenders and a gently worn jacket with sewn-on patches, plus a drooping bow tie and a bowler. Worn lace-up boots or dark sneakers. A light base, brows that slope down at the outer ends, muted cheeks and a small painted frown; one blue teardrop says the rest. Gray spray at the temples ages him. Hold a wilted fabric flower or an empty popcorn box. Done well, this is the one people stop and look at for a second longer.
7. Vintage Hobo Clown Costume

The vintage tramp clown is almost entirely thrift-store clothing, which makes him one of my favorites to shop for. A patched brown jacket over a faded shirt, loose trousers, suspenders and a crooked tie. Sew neat patches on from scraps rather than cutting holes; holes keep spreading through the evening and you'll ruin a jacket you might want again. Striped socks, worn brown boots and a crushed derby. Pale around the mouth and eyes, soft brown stubble painted on, tired brows and a red nose. Keep the portrayal theatrical, an old circus character, never a joke about real hardship.
8. Creepy Carnival Clown Costume

A creepy carnival clown can unsettle people without any gore. A muted striped jumpsuit in black, cream and faded red, a layered ruff, dark gloves and sturdy lace-ups. To age the fabric, I dry-brush a little washable gray costume pigment along the hems and seams, where real wear would show. An untidy red wig or temporary color, then a pale base, narrow brows, dark eye shading and a long red smile with clean edges. A small hat set at a tilt adds the off-balance feel. One red balloon is more unnerving than any weapon prop.
9. Purple And Green Clown Costume

Purple and green can swing funny or spooky, and the restraint is what makes it look designed. Purple trousers, a green patterned shirt and a fitted purple vest, with alternating pom-poms, striped socks and black boots. A fitted vest is a good piece for men who don't want baggy, because it gives you a waistline under all the clown detail. A two-tone wig, or temporary green on the front of dark hair. Purple diamonds above the brows and green triangles below the eyes, a green foam nose and a mini top hat. Stick to those two colors everywhere.
10. Black And Red Scary Clown Costume

Black and red gives you a scary clown that's still fine in public. Black overalls or a dark jumpsuit over a red-and-black striped shirt, red pom-poms and a short black ruff, with black combat-style boots instead of clown shoes. A messy black wig with red tips pulls the eye up to the face. Pale base, dark shading around the eyes, high red brows and a narrow grin, every line smooth. I'd skip fake blood; the contrast does more on its own. A small black hat trimmed in red and a deck of oversized cards finish him.
11. Blue Carnival Clown Costume

Blue clown looks fresher than most men expect. Royal-blue trousers with a pale-blue satin shirt or loose tunic, navy suspenders, silver buttons, a white pleated collar and striped blue socks, then white sneakers or blue high-tops. Satin shirts show sweat at the underarms fast, so on a warm night a cotton tunic is the kinder choice. A short electric-blue wig or washable spray, blue stars around one eye, silver lids and a blue foam nose instead of red. A small silver cone hat. Blue and silver look good under bright party lights.
12. Neon Clown Costume

A neon clown is built for party lights. A black jumpsuit with neon pink, yellow, green and orange patches, fluorescent suspenders, bright pom-poms, striped leg warmers and white sneakers with neon laces. Lime or hot-pink wig. Graphic triangles round the eyes and a bright smile over a light base, using only products labeled for skin; craft paint doesn't belong on a face, and not every neon is approved near the eyes. A fluorescent bow tie and wrist cuffs, plus UV-reactive juggling scarves. It's a good fit for indoor parties and dance nights.
13. Glow-In-The-Dark Clown Costume

The glow clown is an ordinary black outfit until the lights change. A black shirt and loose black trousers with reflective white piping stitched on in curved circus lines, glow-effect suspenders, white gloves and clean white sneakers. Temporary white or electric-blue color brushed up through the hair. Skin-safe fluorescent makeup in diamonds round the eyes, dots on the cheeks and a clearly outlined smile, with a black nose so the glowing parts stand out. Test everything under the actual lighting first. Reflective trim needs a light shone at it, while fluorescent paint needs UV, and they don't behave the same way.
14. Vintage 1920s Clown Costume

A 1920s clown borrows silent-film tailoring. High-waisted black trousers, a white button-up, suspenders and a fitted vest, a narrow bow tie, white gloves and polished black lace-ups. Trousers that sit at the natural waist are the detail that makes it read as period, so wear braces rather than a belt. A soft white ruff, slicked hair and a small black bowler. Grayscale makeup with a pale base, thin black brows, light contour, a tiny mouth and one teardrop. A ticket book or a walking cane held only as a prop. Black and white photograph very sharply.
15. Retro 1980s Clown Costume

The 1980s clown is gym clothes turned up loud. Color-blocked track pants and a matching windbreaker over a plain neon tee, striped sweatbands, high-tops and big plastic sunglasses. Windbreakers rustle and trap heat, so open it once you're indoors. Pin a few removable pom-poms on the jacket so it still says clown. A curly neon wig, or your own hair pushed high with temporary color, zigzags around the eyes, round pink cheeks and a red smile. A foam nose and a patterned fanny pack, with neon juggling rings to match the decade.
16. Dapper Gentleman Clown Costume

The dapper clown is for men who hate baggy jumpsuits, and it's the one I suggest most often. A fitted plaid suit in burgundy, navy or emerald over a crisp white shirt, a colorful bow tie, a patterned pocket square, striped socks and polished loafers. Thrift suits often fit through the shoulders but run long in the sleeve, and a quick temporary hem with fashion tape fixes that for one night. Your own neat hair and a small top hat, arched brows, light red cheeks and an outlined smile. A small red nose, white gloves and a lapel flower.
17. Magician Clown Costume

The magician clown is half stage act, half circus. Black trousers, a white shirt, a colorful vest and a tailcoat with bright satin lapels, plus striped socks, polished black shoes, white gloves and a big bow tie. A tall top hat with a colored fabric band; tall hats wobble, so a comb sewn inside the brim or a thin elastic at the back holds it. Light base, rosy cheeks, black stars near the eyes and a red smile, with the foam nose if you want more comedy. A collapsible wand and a plush rabbit peeking out of the hat.
18. Clown Ringmaster Costume

The ringmaster clown is circus authority played for laughs. Black trousers, a bright red jacket with gold trim or ribbon you've stitched on, a striped vest and a white shirt. Add a big bow tie, white gloves, black riding-style boots and striped socks. I'd pick a miniature top hat over a full-size one because it reads sillier. Bright curls framing the hat, a pale base, red cheeks, big brows and a curled painted mustache. A red foam nose keeps it comic. Carry a card megaphone. The structured jacket is very flattering on most builds.
19. Mime Clown Costume

The mime clown is the simplest monochrome option here. Black trousers, a black-and-white striped shirt, suspenders, white gloves and comfortable black sneakers, with a red neck scarf as the one bright note. A black beret over short combed hair means no wig. White face makeup applied evenly, with black cosmetic liner on brows, eyes and lips, small vertical lines under the eyes and a subtle red mouth. If you shave, do it a few hours before rather than right before; fresh razor burn stings under white paint. The fitted clothes are easy in a crowded room.
20. Jester Clown Costume

The jester is symmetry and movement. A tunic and trousers split into red and black or purple and gold panels, a pointed fabric collar, fitted gloves, striped tights and soft curled-toe shoe covers over sneakers. The two-tone cap with fabric bells gives you the head shape without a wig. Stuff the cap points lightly with fiberfill so they hang in curves instead of flopping flat. Matching diamonds around both eyes, defined brows and a small smile, bright rather than menacing. A wand topped with a soft foam ornament works well for a Renaissance-themed party or a parade.
21. Steampunk Clown Costume

A steampunk clown layers brown, cream and copper. Pinstriped trousers, a ruffled shirt, a waistcoat and a long fitted coat, with leather-look boot covers, fingerless gloves and a wide bow tie. A brown top hat trimmed with gears, ribbon and one bright fabric flower. Plastic gears look fine from a few feet away and weigh far less than metal ones, which matters on a hat. Controlled waves or temporary copper color, a pale base, narrow dark brows, copper eye shading and a burgundy smile, with a bronze-colored nose. A pocket watch is enough; overloaded accessories just get in the way.
22. Rodeo Clown Costume

The rodeo clown is Western wear with circus color. Loose denim overalls over a red plaid shirt, patterned knee patches, suspenders, a bright bandana and sturdy cowboy boots. A colorful Western hat stands in for the bowler, so pick a short curly wig that fits under it, or spray the ends of your own hair orange. Light base, broad brows, round cheeks and a big but clean smile, plus a red foam nose and padded wrist cuffs. Soft cord makes the rope loop. It's practical outdoors, because the boots and denim actually handle a wet field.
23. Sailor Clown Costume

The sailor clown is navy, white and one shot of red. Wide navy trousers, a blue-and-white striped shirt with a sailor collar, red suspenders, oversized white buttons and white canvas sneakers. A sailor collar is easy to fake from a square of white fabric with ribbon trim, worn tied at the front. A short blue wig or neat natural hair under a white sailor cap. Pale base, navy brows, red cheeks, a small blue anchor near one eye and a red foam nose. A toy telescope, striped socks and white gloves. Keeping the colors tight stops an unusual idea from looking busy.
24. Baseball Clown Costume

The baseball clown starts from a uniform. Loose pinstriped baseball pants and an oversized button-front jersey with colorful pom-poms where the buttons were. Sew the pom-poms on through a small felt backing so they don't pull holes in jersey knit. Striped socks, athletic sneakers and suspenders under the open jersey. A plain cap with a fabric flower or a small propeller; temporary orange hair color is more comfortable under a cap than a wig. A white circle around the mouth, red cheeks, dark brows and a foam nose. Carry a foam ball, never a hard bat.
25. Ice Cream Clown Costume

Ice cream clown is a pastel option for men who are happy to be sweet. Mint trousers, a pink-and-white striped shirt, cream suspenders, pastel pom-poms, a waffle-pattern bow tie and white sneakers. A pale-blue or pink wig with a little cone hat. Light base, pink cheeks, sprinkle dots round the eyes in cosmetic products only, and a smiling mouth. A brown foam nose doubles as a chocolate scoop. Hold an empty pastel tub or a cardboard cone. Pastels wash out in dim light, so it's at its best at a daytime or brightly lit family event.
26. Toy Soldier Clown Costume

Toy soldier clown is all about stiff structure. Fitted white trousers, a red military-style jacket with gold cord and oversized round buttons, white gloves, tall black boot covers and a striped cummerbund. A tall red hat with a small pom-pom and neat hair showing underneath. If the jacket hangs loose, a few safety pins at the back seams on the inside give the crisp line a toy soldier needs. Pale base, pink cheeks, sharp arched brows, a curled mustache and a red foam nose. A toy drum with foam sticks, and walk like a wind-up toy.
27. Skeleton Clown Costume

The skeleton clown mixes two Halloween classics and stays clean. A black jumpsuit printed or painted with simple white bones, a white ruff and big black pom-poms. Fabric paint on a stretchy jumpsuit cracks when it's stretched, so paint it while you're wearing it or pull it over a cushion first. Black gloves with white finger markings and comfortable black boots. Hair pushed up with white spray or a short black-and-white wig, pale makeup with soft gray round the eyes, clean black lines at the mouth and a small black nose. A black cone hat edged in white.
28. Ghostly White Clown Costume

The ghostly clown is white and silver layered for texture. Loose white trousers and a flowing white tunic with silver pom-poms, a sheer capelet, a pleated collar, white gloves and pale gray boots or sneakers. All-white needs at least three different textures, matte cotton, sheer chiffon and something shiny, or it looks flat in photos. A softly tousled white wig and a silver cone hat. Pearl-white base, light gray eye shading, thin silver brows, a small downturned mouth and a white or silver nose. A silver balloon finishes it.
29. Patchwork DIY Clown Costume

Patchwork clown is my pick for reusing thrift finds and scrap fabric. Loose overalls or plain trousers and a button-up shirt, covered in colorful squares, circles and triangles sewn on or pinned from the inside. Woven cotton scraps hold their shape; knit scraps curl at the edges unless you back them with fusible interfacing. Homemade suspenders, a fabric bow tie, mismatched socks and decorated canvas sneakers. A two-color yarn wig, simple face paint, and a pom-pom nose attached with skin-safe adhesive. A paper cone hat and stuffed-fabric juggling balls complete it, and the uneven handmade bits are part of its charm.
30. Last-Minute Closet Clown Costume

The last-minute clown comes straight out of your wardrobe. Loose jeans or chinos, a striped shirt, colorful suspenders and mismatched bright socks, with sneakers you'll happily wear all evening. Cut big buttons from felt and safety-pin them down the shirt. Mess up your hair with washable color and add a paper party hat or a borrowed bowler. Red cheeks, curved brows, a small smile and a shape near each eye from a basic makeup kit, then a foam nose and an oversized bow tie in patterned fabric. Two or three balloons tell everyone at once what you are.
Clown Shoe Covers Over Your Own Sneakers
Real oversized clown shoes are hard to walk in, and that's the point on a stage but a hazard on a dark street. I make covers that go over a pair of sneakers you trust instead, so the grip and support stay yours.
- Trace around the sneaker on paper, then draw a bigger rounded toe shape that extends a few centimeters past the front.
- Cut two layers of felt or fleece for the top and stuff the toe area lightly with fiberfill so it holds a round shape.
- Leave the sole open. Gather the edges with elastic so the cover hugs the sneaker's sides, and the real sole stays on the ground.
- Walk up and down the stairs at home before the night out. If the toe catches, trim it shorter.
Face Paint Around a Beard or Stubble
A full beard and a white clown face don't mix well; paint sits in the hair and looks muddy. I'd work with the beard instead. Paint only the upper face, eyes, brows and cheeks, and let the beard stay natural, or dust it with a little temporary color spray to match the wig. Stubble is harder, since paint catches on it, so shave a few hours ahead and put moisturizer on first. Wipe the paint off with a cleansing balm at the end of the night rather than scrubbing, or your skin will tell you about it the next day.
A Clown Suit You Can Wear All Night
The clown worth wearing suits your personality, your event and how much comfort you're willing to trade for drama. Rainbow, tailored, monochrome, neon or spooky carnival can all work for a man. Build whichever you pick from head to toe, with the clothes, the hair or wig, the face, the shoes and one light prop all saying the same thing. Skin-safe makeup and shoes you trust matter most on a long night. With thrifted pieces, a few handmade details and a disciplined palette, any of these ideas will give you a clown you can actually wear for the whole evening.
