A clown costume can go cheerful, glamorous, wistful or slightly eerie, and that range is exactly why I enjoy styling them. What separates a good one from a nose and a wig is the whole outfit: a clear clothing base, then hair, face, props and shoes that all repeat the same few colors. Most of the looks below come together from thrifted pieces, your own closet and a little trim. Pick a mood first, settle on two or three colors, and carry them through every layer. You'll find pastel clowncore, Pierrot, neon, gothic and old-fashioned circus here, all built head to toe.

A Ruff Collar Sewn From One Long Strip
Nearly every look below uses a ruff, and a shop-bought one is often stiff, scratchy and the wrong color. I make mine from a single long strip, and it takes about an hour with a sewing machine or an evening by hand.
- Cut a strip roughly three times your neck measurement in length and about 10 to 15 cm deep. Tulle, organza or a light cotton all work; stiffer fabric gives a crisper ruff.
- Hem or fold over both long edges. Tulle doesn't fray, so it can be left raw.
- Run two rows of long gathering stitches along one edge and pull them up until the strip matches your neck plus a few centimeters of ease.
- Stitch the gathered edge onto a length of bias binding or grosgrain ribbon, leaving long tails to tie at the back.
- Try it on and fan the folds out evenly. A second layer in a contrast color makes it fuller without any extra bulk at the neck.
Ties are kinder than a snap or hook. A ruff that's too tight is the first thing people pull off at a party, and ties let you loosen it without taking it off.
1. Classic Circus Clown Costume

The classic circus clown is primary colors done honestly: red high-waisted shorts or loose pants, a yellow puff-sleeve blouse, rainbow suspenders and oversized blue buttons. Striped knee socks and red lace-up sneakers carry the color down to the floor, which most people forget. The white ruffled collar gives the silhouette. For hair, two high puffs or a short rainbow curly wig. Keep the face friendly with round rosy cheeks, a small red nose and an outlined smile, and juggle a few soft balls or hold lightweight balloons. Repeat red, yellow and blue everywhere and it looks planned instead of random.
2. Pastel Clown Costume

Pastel clown is the one I'd hand to someone who finds the classic version too loud. A baby-pink puff-sleeve romper over a pale-blue tulle skirt, white star-dotted tights and lavender platform sneakers or pastel boots. Tulle in pale shades flattens fast in a bag, so carry the skirt on a hanger or fluff it with a hair dryer on cool. Add a pleated collar, pom-pom buttons and a mini cone hat on a headband. Low ribboned pigtails or a wavy lilac wig, then pink blush, a heart-shaped nose and tiny pastel diamonds at the eyes. A star wand is plenty.
3. Black And White Pierrot Clown Costume

Pierrot is the refined end of clown, and the fabrics do the talking. I pair a loose white satin blouse with big sleeves, black velvet shorts, opaque tights and pointed ankle boots. The wide pleated collar and three black pom-poms down the front are his signature line. Hair goes into a sleek low bun or soft waves under a little black skullcap. I'd use a light natural base here instead of thick white paint, then thin black brows, a single small teardrop and a blurred berry lip. Satin catches the light and velvet absorbs it, which gives a black-and-white outfit real depth.
4. Pink Coquette Clown Costume

Coquette clown runs on bows. Layer a pink corset-style top over a white puff-sleeve blouse, add a tiered ruffle skirt, patterned white tights and pink ballet flats with ankle ribbons. Satin bows sewn onto the collar, then the same bows repeated on the skirt or sleeves, tie it together. Glue lets go of satin, so a couple of stitches per bow is worth the five minutes. Soft curls or a pink bob wig with a tiny hat, rounded blush, glossy lips and little hearts under the eyes. Stay inside pink, white and soft red, or all those details start to look cluttered.
5. Gothic Clown Costume

A gothic clown can be dramatic without anything graphic. A black velvet dress with puffed shoulders and an asymmetrical ruffled hem is the base, with striped tights and chunky ankle boots so you can actually walk. Add a charcoal pleated collar, silver bells and a pointed two-tone cap. Bells are lovely for about ten minutes and then they drive you mad, so I sew in two or three, not a dozen. Straight black hair or two sleek ponytails with velvet ribbon, a matte complexion, smoky diamond eyes and a plum lip. Hold a black rose or a hand mirror.
6. Glam Sequin Clown Costume

Sequins push clown into party territory. I'd base this on a silver sequin jumpsuit with flared legs, a white ruff collar, crystal buttons and metallic platform boots. Sequin seams scratch the inside of arms and thighs, so wear a thin layer underneath or check the lining before a long night. A curled high ponytail or a platinum wig with a tiny jeweled cone hat. The face is glam first and clown second: silver lids, a long liner, luminous skin and a sharp cherry-red lip. Keep everything to silver, white and red so the sequins stay the focus.
7. Vintage Porcelain Clown Costume

The porcelain clown borrows from an antique doll. An ivory satin dress with balloon sleeves, a fitted bodice and a knee-length circle skirt, then lace cuffs, pearl buttons, cream tights and burgundy Mary Janes. A soft bonnet trimmed with tea-dyed ribbon makes it feel old rather than new. Ringlets or a short warm-brown curled wig, a smooth pale base, pink cheeks, thin arched brows, painted lower lashes and a small rosebud lip. A few fine lines can hint at porcelain glaze; keep them delicate so they never look like cracks or wounds. A lace handkerchief is the only prop she needs.
8. Red And White Clown Costume

Two colors make a bold clown easy to put together. White high-waisted trousers, a red puff-sleeve top, red suspenders and oversized white buttons, then red-and-white striped socks and glossy red loafers or sneakers. The crisp white ruff balances all that red. I tie two buns with red ribbon or use a short bright-red wig. On the face, a small red nose, round blush and little red triangles above and below each eye, leaving most of the skin bare for a modern finish. A red balloon or a striped umbrella says everything else.
9. Rainbow Clown Costume

Rainbow clown sounds chaotic, and it is unless you plan the order. I start from a white romper or jumpsuit so every color has a clean background, then add a rainbow tulle overskirt, multicolored suspenders, pom-pom buttons, striped tights and sneakers with different colored laces. Wherever colors repeat, keep them in the same sequence, red to violet, on the skirt, the buttons and the eyelid arches alike. That one rule is what makes it look designed. A curly rainbow wig, a red nose and a colorful umbrella or pinwheel finish it, and it's a happy choice for a daytime event.
10. Neon Clown Costume

Neon clown needs a black base or it fights itself. A fitted black jumpsuit, or black top and shorts, then neon green, hot pink and electric blue layered on as suspenders, a vinyl ruff and mismatched leg warmers, with white platform sneakers. A high ponytail with neon extensions or a lime bob wig. For the face, use neon pigments labelled cosmetic-safe for skin; craft paints and highlighter pens are not, and some neons aren't approved for use around the eyes. Crisp graphic diamonds, pink blush and a black or berry lip. Reflective trim looks great under party lights.
11. Celestial Clown Costume

The celestial clown is velvet night sky with silver stars. A midnight-blue velvet romper with billowing sleeves under a silver tulle overskirt, star-print tights, silver ankle boots and a crescent-shaped collar with moon pom-poms. Navy waves or two low buns pinned with silver stars. Foil stars on the sleeves look pretty, but they peel off velvet within an hour if they're only glued; a dot of fabric glue plus a single stitch through the middle holds them. Blue and lavender eye diamonds, silver freckles and a plum lip. Keep enough silver and brightness that it stays whimsical rather than gloomy.
12. Sun And Moon Clown Costume

Sun and moon is a split costume, so the line down the middle has to be clean. A jumpsuit that's gold on one side and deep navy on the other, alternating puff sleeves, a two-tone ruff and mismatched gold and blue boots. If you're piecing this together rather than buying it, a plain jumpsuit with fabric paint gives a cleaner divide than taping two garments together. Center-part the hair, gold color on one side and blue ribbon on the other. Split the face gently, with warm yellow details on the sun side and a silver moon on the other. A round half-sun, half-moon prop finishes it.
13. Harlequin Clown Costume

Harlequin is all about the diamonds, so everything else has to stay disciplined. A fitted black-and-red diamond jumpsuit with flared cuffs and a peplum waist, a pointed two-tone hat with small bells, a structured ruff, black gloves and red ankle boots. A sleek braid or a short black bob sits neatly under the hat. Echo the pattern with one red eye diamond and one black, plus a precise red lip. Because the print is already busy, I keep the accessories symmetrical and never add a third color. A card fan or ribbon wand beats anything pointed.
14. Romantic Velvet Clown Costume

Velvet and muted color make a clown that suits a dressier Halloween party. A burgundy velvet mini dress or knee-length jumpsuit with puff sleeves, a blush-pink pleated collar, pearl buttons, sheer cream tights and burgundy block heels. Velvet crushes where you sit, so if the party's long, steam the skirt before you leave and stand when you can. Loose waves tied back with a velvet bow, rose shadow, a softly extended liner and a wine lip. One small painted heart under the eye is enough clown. Carry a fabric rose bouquet.
15. Candy Clown Costume

Candy clown should suggest sweets without copying any branded treat. A pink-and-mint striped romper, a white tulle overskirt, swirled buttons, striped tights and pastel platform sneakers. I like a scalloped collar in layered fabric that looks like a wrapper. Bubble pigtails or a cotton-candy wig. Sprinkle dots around the eyes look cute, but use cosmetic products only, since craft glitter and sprinkles near eyes are a bad idea. The oversized swirl lollipop is easiest from painted cardboard on a dowel. Use the same three pastels on everything and it holds together.
16. Floral Garden Clown Costume

Flowers soften the circus for anyone who wants something fresh. Sage-green overalls over a cream puff-sleeve blouse, with fabric daisies on the bib and pockets, a layered floral collar, striped green tights and yellow lace-up boots. Silk flowers get heavy fast, and heavy flowers droop forward off a collar, so I choose small blooms and pin them on through the back. Braids woven with artificial flowers, petal shapes around one eye, peach blush, a little yellow nose and coral lips. A watering can full of silk blooms is the obvious prop, and a charming one.
17. Fairy Clown Costume

Fairy clown mixes the ruff and pom-poms with delicate wings. A lavender playsuit with sheer puff sleeves, a layered mint overskirt, iridescent pom-pom buttons, pale tights and glittery flats. The wings should sit close to the back and stay compact; big wings get knocked in every doorway and corridor. Soft waves with pastel ribbons or a lilac wig, sparkly eye diamonds, round blush and a tiny star nose. A ribbon wand tipped with a pom-pom keeps it more clown than fairy, and lavender, mint and pearl hold the two ideas together.
18. Disco Clown Costume

Disco clown takes 1970s shine and adds clown shapes. A metallic rainbow jumpsuit with wide legs, a belted waist and bell sleeves, a silver ruff, big round buttons, tinted round glasses and white platform boots. Platforms on a dance floor need practice, so walk around the house in them first. Big curls from your own texture or a copper wig, shimmer swept toward the temples in points, glossy cheeks and a coral lip. A small mirror ball catches the light. The jumpsuit already moves and shines, so I leave the accessories there.
19. Retro 1960s Clown Costume

The 1960s clown is a mod dress with neat clown details, not baggy clothes. An A-line mini printed with big red, yellow and blue circles over white tights, a rounded ruff, bold wrist cuffs and low block-heel Mary Janes. If you can't find the print, felt circles stitched onto a plain white shift work, though felt pills on knit fabric, so pick a woven dress. A flipped bob or a short platinum wig with a colored headband. Clean winged liner, drawn lower lashes, peach blush and a tiny red nose. Keep the shape structured and it reads as fashion first.
20. 1980s Clown Costume

The 1980s clown is loud on purpose. An oversized color-blocked sweatshirt over a layered tulle skirt, shiny leggings and high-tops, cinched with a wide neon belt. Chunky plastic bracelets, big pom-pom buttons and a pleated collar. A high side ponytail with a scrunchie or a crimped pink wig, blue eyeshadow, bright blush and small lightning bolts by the eyes. A toy microphone makes a fun prop. I cap it at three neon shades plus black or white, because exaggerated layers stop reading as a costume once every color in the box turns up.
21. Punk Clown Costume

A punk clown can look rebellious and still be safe in a crowd. Black plaid trousers, a red fitted vest over a striped long-sleeve top and sturdy lace-up boots. Add removable patches, light chains, a torn-look tulle bustle and a black ruff. A faux mohawk or spiked pigtails, smudged graphic diamonds and a dark cherry lip. I'd skip real safety pins on the outside; they snag other people's clothes and can open up. Plastic costume versions look the same from a meter away. Red, black and white keep the punk tied to the clown.
22. Steampunk Clown Costume

Steampunk clown is a Victorian outfit with some brass. Brown high-waisted trousers or a bustle skirt, an ivory ruffled blouse and a bronze brocade vest, then striped stockings, lace-up boots, leather-look cuffs and a pleated collar edged in metallic trim. A curled updo or a copper wig under a tiny gear-trimmed top hat. Plastic gears glued to a small hat stay put with hot glue indoors, but the joins get brittle in cold air, so add a stitch if you're going outside. Bronze eye diamonds and a burgundy lip. Rest the goggles on the hat, not over your eyes.
23. Clowncore Streetwear Costume

Clowncore streetwear is the version you could almost wear to brunch. Patchwork overalls, a striped fitted shirt, colorful crew socks and chunky white sneakers, with big pom-poms on the bib and a detachable ruffled collar. Take the collar off and you're nearly in normal clothes, which is handy for a long day. Natural curls or two messy buns with bright clips instead of a wig. Round blush, tiny stars under the eyes and a small painted nose. A checkerboard crossbody bag holds your things, and red, blue and yellow repeated across the patches keep the theme clear.
24. Cottagecore Clown Costume

Cottagecore clown is a prairie dress that wandered into a circus. A cream puff-sleeve dress in a small floral print, a sage patchwork apron, ruffled ankle socks, brown Mary Janes, a scalloped collar and fabric-covered buttons. Two loose braids with gingham ribbons. The face stays soft: peach blush, a few freckles, a tiny heart nose. Fill a woven basket with silk flowers, handkerchiefs and soft juggling balls. I deliberately leave the clown parts slightly mismatched and handmade, because a too-neat collar fights the farmhouse mood.
25. Monochrome Blue Clown Costume

One color family can make clown look surprisingly sophisticated. A cobalt satin romper with balloon sleeves, a powder-blue tulle bustle, navy tights and blue ankle boots, with an ombré pleated collar and pom-poms that step down in shade. A sleek navy bob wig or your own hair with blue ribbons and jeweled clips. Pale blue pointed eye shapes, cool pink blush and a dark-blue heart nose. The thing to get right is contrast: you need a clear light, mid and dark blue, or the whole outfit flattens into one block in photos.
26. Cherry Clown Costume

Cherry clown has an easy retro feel. A white romper printed with small cherries, a red tulle overskirt, green suspenders and cherry pom-pom buttons, white tights and glossy red Mary Janes. Curled pigtails tied with green ribbon or a dark-red bob under a little leaf-shaped hat. Red circle blush, green winged liner and a glossy cherry lip. The prop is two foam balls painted red on green ribbon stems. Paint them with acrylic and let them dry overnight, since foam stays tacky for hours. Keep the fruit large but few, or it starts to look busy.
27. Cloud Clown Costume

Cloud clown is pale blue, white and silver. A pale-blue romper with rounded puff sleeves and a bubble skirt, then soft white tulle gathered around the cuffs, collar and hem. Tulle is scratchy against bare wrists, so I gather it onto a strip of soft cotton tape before stitching it on. Silver tights and white platform sneakers. White curls or two round buns with star clips, pearly shadow, floating white dots and lavender blush. A foam cloud with satin raindrops on threads is the prop. The collar and pom-poms keep it clown.
28. Vintage Carnival Clown Costume

Vintage carnival is about muted color, not grime. Burgundy-and-cream striped trousers, an ivory blouse, fitted suspenders and a red vest that's worn soft, plus a wide linen collar, antique-brass buttons, cream socks and brown lace-ups. A tea or coffee soak takes the brightness out of new cotton and linen if your pieces look too fresh; test a scrap first. Soft curls under a small round hat, faded red eye diamonds and a burgundy nose. Foam juggling pins painted to look like wood or a stack of oversized tickets finish it.
29. Spooky Striped Clown Costume

A spooky clown can get its mood from contrast and shape instead of anything graphic. A black-and-cream striped jumpsuit with flared sleeves and a cinched waist, a layered black ruff, opaque tights, platform lace-ups and three oversized burgundy pom-poms. A teased black bob or two high pigtails with white streaks. Long black diamonds round the eyes, soft gray contouring and a small dark-red lip, all drawn clean rather than smudged. That clean line is what keeps it eerie rather than horror. A striped umbrella or a lantern prop works well.
30. Easy Last-Minute Clown Costume

The last-minute clown comes from the closet. Colorful trousers or a patterned skirt, a white button-down and bright suspenders, then striped socks and sneakers. The quickest ruff I know is a long strip of ribbon or folded paper gathered onto a cord and tied at the neck. Three big pom-poms down the front with removable tape. High pigtails or messy buns with ribbons. On the face, a small triangle under each eye, round blush, a red nose and a defined lip. Stick to two main colors and it looks intentional instead of rushed.
Clown Face Paint on an Ordinary Evening
I'm a stylist rather than a makeup artist, so what I can offer is the everyday side of it. Patch-test any face paint on the inside of your wrist or behind the ear the day before, and use only products made for skin. Paint anywhere near the eyes needs to say it's suitable for that area, which many neon and glitter products don't.
- Start from clean, moisturized skin, then let the moisturizer sink in for a few minutes so the paint doesn't slide.
- Draw the graphic shapes with a fine brush and fill them in afterwards; it's easier to keep the edges sharp that way.
- Press translucent setting powder over cream paint with a puff. It cuts down on transfer onto collars and other people.
- Put the ruff on after the face is set, or the white of the collar will pick up color within minutes.
Removal matters as much as application. An oil-based cleanser or a cleansing balm lifts cream paint far better than scrubbing with soap, and a second gentle wash takes off what's left. Go slowly around the eyes, and if your skin stings or turns red at any point, take it all off and switch products next time.
Settle Your Colors Before Anything Else
The clown look I'd send you out in is the one that's comfortable and finished from hair to shoes. Every idea on this list starts from the same character, and it's palette, fabric, shape and face that make each one different. Settle your two or three colors before you buy or pull anything, then repeat them in your hair, your makeup, your props and your shoes. A ruff, one graphic eye shape and a prop people recognize will carry even the simplest outfit. Pick the mood you like, velvet, pastel or carnival, and keep the details consistent.
