Cartoon Network characters were drawn to be read in a second: flat color, a simple shape and one or two details nobody else has. That is good news for a costume, because most of these come together from closet basics, thrift-store finds, felt and a little face paint rather than real construction. The list runs from The Powerpuff Girls and Scooby-Doo through Adventure Time, Steven Universe and The Amazing World of Gumball, with solo looks, pairs and full friend groups. I've written each one the way I'd actually put it together, including the shortcuts I take and the spots where a costume tends to fall apart by the end of the night.

Turning Flat Cartoon Color Into Real Clothes
Animated characters are drawn in solid, flat color with almost no texture, and that is what your eye uses to recognize them. Real clothes fight that. A heathered gray hoodie, faded denim or a fine stripe softens the color, and the character starts to look like a person in an outfit. When I shop for one of these, I look for solid, saturated pieces in matte cotton or fleece, and I compare the colors in daylight rather than under store lighting.
The Order I Build In
- Lay out what you already own first. Most of these need one solid top and one solid bottom in the right colors.
- Thrift the one or two missing pieces, then spend your money and time on the signature detail: the wig, the bow, the hat or the collar.
- Cut stripes, spots and appliques from felt and stitch them on with a loose running stitch. Glue is faster, but it peels off fleece and stretch knits.
- Try the whole costume on a few days early and walk around in it. Anything that slides, pinches or flops gets fixed then, not at the door.
Scale matters as well. Cartoon details are big, and a bow or star that looks right in your hand is usually too small from across a room. I cut ears, stars and stripes noticeably larger than feels natural, then check them in a mirror from the far side of the room before stitching anything down.
1. Blossom Costume With Pink Dress

Blossom is a pink sleeveless dress with a wide black stripe at the waist, white tights and black Mary Jane shoes, so the dress is where I spend the effort. A plain skater dress works. I attach the black band with removable fashion tape so the dress goes back into the wardrobe afterwards, though tape lets go on a stretchy knit, and a few loose hand stitches are safer if you'll be dancing. The long orange-red wig with straight bangs and the oversized red bow do most of the recognizing. Keep the makeup bright and young with rosy blush, a pink lip and a wide black upper liner, carry a small pink heart purse for your phone, and stand next to her two sisters if you can.
2. Bubbles Costume With Blue Dress

Start with a sky-blue sleeveless dress and a thick black band around the middle, then white tights and black Mary Jane flats or a low block heel. The blonde wig goes into two high pigtails with small blue ties. On a cheap wig I always tie pigtails over a wig cap and pin each base, because the weight of a bunch drags the whole wig sideways within an hour. Pink cheeks, gloss and a light wash of blue shadow are enough for her face. A small stuffed octopus nods to her favorite toy without filling your hands, and a fitted white long-sleeve tee underneath handles a cold evening without breaking the colors.
3. Buttercup Costume With Green Dress

Buttercup needs a lime or grass-green shift dress with the same bold black waist stripe, plus white tights and black Mary Janes. Her short black bob with flipped ends matters more than people expect. If your own hair is dark you can skip the wig entirely: tuck it behind your ears and smooth it down with styling cream. Green liner, a neutral lip and firm brows give her the scowl. I like fingerless black gloves here for attitude, and a green belt bag keeps your hands free. She holds up alone, but put her beside a Blossom and a Bubbles and nobody has to guess.
4. Dexter Costume With Lab Coat

Dexter is funny because of proportion. A white lab coat goes over a black shirt or mock-neck, with purple pants, black ankle boots and bright purple gloves. Buy the coat a size or two big; a fitted one just reads as a science teacher. The short orange wig needs strong-hold spray to stand upright, and oversized round glasses with clear or blue-tinted lenses finish the face along with a few freckles and sharp orange brows. A clipboard of hand-drawn formulas or a small cardboard control panel gives your hands a job, and the whole outfit is comfortable from a school event through to a late party.
5. Dee Dee Costume With Pink Tutu

Dee Dee is a fitted purple or lavender top, a short pink tutu over white leggings, and pink ballet flats or flat Mary Janes. Put fitted shorts under the tutu, because tulle rides up every time you sit down. Her long blonde wig goes into two high pigtails with pink bands, and soft purple shadow with pink blush and gloss keeps her cheerful. My favorite detail is a lightweight cardboard button marked with simple symbols: the lab control she can never leave alone. Leg warmers help on a cold street. She is the obvious partner for a Dexter, as siblings, friends or a couple.
6. Johnny Bravo Costume With Black T-Shirt

The hair carries Johnny Bravo. Everything else is a fitted black T-shirt, straight blue jeans with a slightly high waist, chunky black boots, a black belt and dark rectangular sunglasses. A tall blonde pompadour wig is the easy route. If you have short blonde hair, firm paste and plenty of hairspray will push it upward, but it starts to sag after a few hours in a warm room, so I'd carry the can. A touch of bronzer under the jaw is all the makeup he needs. Stand with your shoulders back, keep a toy comb in your pocket for the joke, and you have a cheap last-minute costume that actually lands.
7. Courage The Cowardly Dog Costume

For Courage I start with a soft pink hoodie and matching joggers or leggings, then attach large floppy pink felt ears to the hood. Black felt spots go across the back and sides. I stitch those rather than glue them on polyester fleece, since glue peels away from that fabric once it bends and stretches all night. Pin a light pink tail securely to the waistband. Paint a round brown nose, dot small whiskers with black liner, and use pink blush with raised brows for his permanently worried face. Wear sneakers outdoors or fuzzy paw slippers inside, and add a cardboard keyboard if you want a nod to his grumpy computer. It's one of the warmest picks on the list.
8. Samurai Jack Costume With White Robe

Samurai Jack is all silhouette: a white wrap robe or martial arts uniform tied with a wide white sash, loose white pants underneath, white socks and brown sandals or sandal-look shoe covers. A wrap front gapes as soon as you move, so I add hidden snaps or a strip of fashion tape where it crosses over. The straight black wig goes up into a high topknot, and that topknot needs several pins because it wobbles loose. Defined black brows and a little cheekbone contour are plenty. Skip the sword. A round woven hat or a small fabric pouch is safer, and plenty of schools and parties won't allow a blade replica anyway.
9. Ed Edd N Eddy Group Costume

This trio is a thrift-store project, and matching the colors exactly is what sells it. Ed wears a red-and-white striped shirt, loose blue pants, black shoes and a short dark wig. Edd needs a red-orange shirt, purple shorts, red socks, sneakers and a black beanie pulled low. Eddy is a yellow polo with a purple collar, blue jeans, red-and-white shoes and slicked-back hair. Light contour can hint at each face shape, but I'd rather put the time into the shared props, cardboard jawbreakers painted in big pastel swirls. Agree on your poses before photos. Three people in casual clothes only read as a group when they act like one.
10. Numbuh 1 Costume With Red Sweater

Numbuh 1 comes almost entirely out of a closet: a bright red sweater or crewneck sweatshirt, tan shorts, white knee socks, brown lace-ups and dark oval sunglasses. A bald cap is the closest match, but it gets hot and the edge is hard to blend, so a beige swim cap is the easier swap for most people. Keep the face to light brows and a serious expression. Carry a cardboard communicator, rolled mission plans or a badge with a big number one, and wear a tan utility pouch at the waist for phone and keys. It's light enough to run around in all evening.
11. Grim Costume With Red Hooded Robe

Grim can be spooky and still suit a family party. Use a long black robe with wide sleeves, a deep red hood or cowl over the head and shoulders, and black gloves and boots so nothing everyday shows. For the face, pick a white skull mask with a friendly cartoon expression, or white face paint with rounded black shapes around the eyes and nose. Masks narrow your side vision, so I'd choose paint for anyone walking streets after dark. Leave the scythe at home and carry a painted cardboard hourglass or a joke appointment book. Hem the robe clear of the floor; a dragging hem is how people trip on porch steps.
12. Mandy Costume With Pink Dress

Mandy's costume is mostly expression. The dress is short-sleeved pink with large yellow flower shapes, in an A-line or skater cut that moves easily, worn with white ankle socks and black Mary Janes. Her straight blonde bob with short bangs should look combed flat and very neat. Keep the makeup matte: foundation, lightly defined eyes, a pale pink lip and dead-straight brows, which do most of the work of that unimpressed stare. A small black book or a yellow flower-shaped bag gives you a prop. She pairs naturally with a Grim or a Billy.
13. Finn Costume With Blue Shirt

Finn is about the easiest build here: a bright blue T-shirt, darker blue shorts, rolled white socks, sturdy black shoes and a green round backpack. The hat is the bit worth making properly. Sew it from fleece, or stitch two felt points onto a plain white beanie. Felt points flop over unless you back them, so I slip a layer of stiff interfacing or thin craft foam inside each one. Tuck all your hair under it, add light freckles and pink cheeks, and carry a rolled map or a small handheld-game plush instead of a sword. A blue long-sleeve tee under the T-shirt sorts out a cold night, and he suits adults, teens and kids equally.
14. Jake Costume With Yellow Hoodie

Jake gives you warmth and a silly shape. Use a mustard-yellow hoodie with matching sweatpants or leggings, rounded yellow ears on the hood and a soft tail stitched or safety-pinned at the back. I prefer putting his face on the hood itself, with large white felt eyes and a black felt nose, so your own face stays clear and there's no makeup to keep fresh all night. If you'd rather paint, yellow shadow, a black nose and a few whisker dots will do it. Yellow sneakers or paw shoe covers finish the feet. A tiny green backpack helps, but standing next to a Finn explains him straight away.
15. Princess Bubblegum Costume With Pink Gown

Princess Bubblegum mixes royal touches with candy pink. Wear a floor-length pink dress or a layered pink maxi skirt with a fitted top, a darker pink belt or ribbon at the waist, and pink flats or low block heels. The long bubblegum-pink wig needs a tall gold crown with a blue centerpiece. I pin the crown through the wig into a wig cap, because a tall crown tips backwards the moment you laugh. Pink shadow, rosy cheeks, gloss and a little shimmer on the cheekbones are enough. Carry a small beaker or notebook for her science side. If a gown is too much to manage, a knee-length dress with matching tights still reads clearly, and thrifted formalwear is a cheap place to start.
16. Marceline Costume With Gray Tank Top

Marceline is the pick for someone who wants dark without gore. A charcoal tank top, fitted blue jeans and red ankle boots go with a long straight black wig left a little messy. Pale foundation, cool gray shadow, winged liner and a dark berry lip give the vampire look. If you add fangs, try the small rounded kind and test talking in them at home; bigger ones give you a lisp all night. A red bass guitar cut from lightweight foam board is the classic prop, and a red guitar-shaped bag is the lazy version. Add a cropped red cardigan outside, and most of these pieces go straight back into your normal wardrobe.
17. Steven Universe Costume With Star Shirt

Steven rests on one item, the star shirt. Find a red or coral crewneck and put a big yellow star on the chest, then add cuffed jeans and pink sandals, slip-ons or sneakers. I cut the star from iron-on vinyl when I can; glued felt tends to curl up at the points on a stretchy cotton tee. A short curly black wig is optional and should stay soft and round. Keep the makeup warm and natural. His pink gem sits over the stomach, stuck to the shirt or to a fitted layer underneath. A foam shield is fun if the venue allows large props; otherwise a cheeseburger-shaped backpack makes the same joke. Any age can wear him.
18. Garnet Costume With Color Block Jumpsuit

Garnet is the most ambitious look here, and it hinges on the suit. A red, magenta and black color-block jumpsuit is the easy route. Without one, I'd combine black leggings with a structured red top and sew angular pink panels onto it. Add red or burgundy boots, oversized square visor glasses, magenta gloves and a deep purple afro wig, which is her strongest single feature. Plum lipstick, pink shadow and graphic liner still show behind the visor. Soft padded foam at the shoulders or forearms gives cartoon bulk, but keep it light or it slides around. Leave the combat accessories out and let the glasses, hair and suit carry her.
19. Ben 10 Costume With Green Jacket

Ben 10 is a good last-minute choice because the outfit is everyday clothing: a black T-shirt with a white vertical stripe, olive cargo pants and black-and-white sneakers, plus a green utility jacket if it's cold. Messy short brown hair or a cropped brown wig, a few freckles and light brows cover the rest. The watch is the one thing you must get right. I layer craft foam onto a wide wristband and glue a printed circular symbol on top. Keep it flexible, because a stiff watch rubs the wrist raw within an hour. A small green backpack holds your things.
20. Gwen Tennyson Costume With Blue Sweater

Gwen's classic outfit is practical separates: a light blue sweater with a small dark cat emblem on the chest, black or navy cropped pants and blue canvas sneakers. The short orange-red bob with side-swept bangs is the giveaway. Cheap orange wigs often flash shiny in photos, and a light dusting of dry shampoo knocks that shine back. Peach blush, brown mascara and a natural pink lip keep her fresh, with a blue barrette near one temple. A small book or laptop sleeve hints at how clever she is. Layer a white collared shirt and dark tights in the cold. She passes most school dress codes and sits well next to a Ben 10.
21. Robin Costume With Red And Green Uniform

Robin's animated uniform becomes a fitted red top with short green sleeves, green leggings, black briefs-style shorts worn over them, a wide yellow utility belt and black lace-up boots. The short black cape is lined in yellow. I attach capes at the shoulder seams with snaps rather than tying them at the throat, so a tug in a crowd never pulls on your neck. Spike black hair with temporary gel or wear a short spiked wig, then add a small black eye mask, sharp brows, green gloves and a round yellow chest emblem. He needs no props at all. He can lead a Teen Titans group or stand alone.
22. Raven Costume With Purple Hooded Cape

Raven starts with a long purple hooded cape over a fitted black leotard-style top and opaque black leggings, with purple ankle boots or flat knee-highs. Her short dark-purple bob has a pointed center part. Use cool lavender shadow, black liner and a deep plum lip, and keep the skin clean rather than scary. The red oval gems go on a gold belt, the cape clasp and a forehead piece. For the forehead, use a skin-safe adhesive and patch-test it on the inside of your wrist the day before. Keep every piece light. Purple gloves and a small book-shaped purse finish her, and the hooded cape keeps her modest and warm at a public party.
23. Starfire Costume With Purple Outfit

Starfire is a metallic-purple crop top over a fitted nude or lavender undershirt, a matching high-waisted skirt or shorts over opaque purple tights, silver wrist cuffs, a silver collar and purple knee-high boots with a low heel. Her long bright-red wig should have smooth waves. Brush it out before you leave and mist it with a wig detangler, because long synthetic hair knots fast wherever it rubs a collar. Green shadow, black mascara, peach blush and soft pink lipstick give her that bright face. Green costume lenses exist, but I'd skip them; regular makeup is safer for most people. A green glow bracelet or a small light-up purse is a fun extra in a group.
24. Gumball Costume With Beige Sweater

Gumball turns into an easy human outfit: a beige crewneck over a white collared shirt so the collar shows, dark gray pants and black sneakers. Add a bright blue bob wig, a headband with small blue cat ears and a lightweight matching tail. Use blue face paint only across the nose and cheeks, with a dark nose and whisker dots. I'd never do a full blue face for a long night. It itches, and it ends up all over that white collar. Set the paint with translucent powder to cut down transfer. Carry a school notebook, or better, stand next to your Darwin.
25. Darwin Costume With Green Sneakers

Darwin needs very few pieces: an orange hoodie, matching joggers or fitted pants, and oversized green sneakers or green shoe covers. Those green feet matter more than anything else here. Felt fins go on the hood and sleeves, kept small and rounded so they don't snag on door frames. An orange beanie with two big cartoon eyes can stand in for the hood. Orange blush across the cheeks, a small black nose and friendly curved brows handle the face. Add a soft fin at the back and a blue school backpack. He makes most sense beside a Gumball, but the shoes carry him alone too.
26. Mordecai Costume With Blue Hoodie

Mordecai is blue, white and black color blocking: a royal-blue hoodie or sweater with a white chest panel, black jeans, blue-and-white sneakers and a striped blue tail stuffed with fiberfill or cut from felt. A pointed blue bird beanie with black detailing gives you the character without covering your face. Pale blue shadow, a small black nose and simple black lines near the eyes are all the makeup he needs. Carry a paper cup with a soft drink or a handheld game prop. Keep the tail short, since a long one gets stepped on in any crowded room. He's warm, easy, and meant to stand next to a Rigby.
27. Rigby Costume With Brown Hoodie

Rigby starts with a brown hoodie and matching brown joggers. The long striped tail alternates dark and light brown felt; I sew it to the waistband high enough to stay off the ground and push a little fiberfill inside so it doesn't flatten. Small rounded raccoon ears go on the hood or on a headband. Warm brown shadow around the eyes, a black nose and a few whisker dots are plenty. Skip a heavy eye mask if you plan to wear the costume for hours, because the skin around the eyes is the first place to sweat. A cardboard game controller or a compact crossbody bag finishes it, and with a Mordecai beside you the pair needs no explanation.
28. Scooby-Doo Costume With Brown Jumpsuit

Scooby-Doo works on a brown jumpsuit, a matching sweatsuit or a soft one-piece pajama. Dark brown felt spots go on the shoulders, back and legs, with a flexible tail and floppy ears on a headband or the hood. The blue collar with a gold diamond-shaped tag is the piece people spot first, so make it well. A strip of blue fabric or vinyl with a hook-and-loop closure is comfortable and quick to take off. Use brown paint around the nose, black whisker dots and lifted brows. Pick brown sneakers or paw covers that grip on wet pavement, and carry a box of dog treats or a plush sandwich. A pajama base is warm, which makes him a sensible choice for a cold outdoor night.
29. Velma Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma's outfit is one of the more wearable looks here: a bright orange turtleneck, a pleated red skirt that falls around the knee, orange knee socks and red Mary Janes or comfortable loafers. A short dark-brown bob with straight bangs and large square black glasses do the rest. If you already wear glasses, square black frames save you a step. Warm neutral makeup, soft brows and a muted coral lip keep her polished. Carry a lightweight plastic magnifying glass and a small notebook for clues, and put fitted shorts under the skirt if you plan to dance. She's strongest as part of the full gang with Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Daphne and Fred.
30. Daphne Costume With Purple Dress

Daphne begins with a long-sleeve purple dress, mini or knee-length, a light green scarf tied neatly at the neck, purple tights and matching block heels or flats. The long red-orange wig wants soft volume and a lavender headband set just behind the hairline. Her makeup can lean a little glam while staying family-friendly, with lavender shadow, defined lashes, peach blush and pink lipstick. A small structured handbag and a lightweight magnifying glass keep the detective idea going. On a cold night I'd layer thermals under the dress or switch to a purple coat dress. She works solo, as half of a best-friend pair or with the whole mystery-solving group.
Cartoon Wigs Without Dyeing Your Hair
Plenty of these characters have hair nobody grows naturally: bubblegum pink, bright blue, flame orange, deep purple. A wig is the honest answer unless you want to commit to dye. Cheap synthetic costume wigs usually arrive shiny and flat, so I do three things before anyone wears one.
- Brush it gently from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, then trim the bangs a little at a time while it's on the head.
- Knock back the plastic shine with a light dusting of dry shampoo or a matte powder.
- Wear a wig cap and pin the wig at the crown and behind each ear. Pigtails, topknots and crowns all add weight that pulls it loose.
Keep synthetic wigs well away from curling irons, candles and lit pumpkins. Most frizz or melt with heat, and that damage can't be brushed out. If you'd rather skip a wig, temporary color sprays last a night, but they rub off onto collars and pillowcases, so I save them for dark costumes rather than anything with a white lab coat.
Face Paint That Stays Off Your Collar
A lot of these looks use a painted nose, whisker dots or a wash of color across the cheeks. Cream face paint goes on smoothly, then transfers onto everything it touches as your face warms up. I press translucent powder over it with a puff, wait a few minutes and add a second light layer. Test any new paint on the inside of your wrist the day before, and take it off at night with an oil cleanser or makeup remover rather than soap and scrubbing. For kids especially, a small painted nose and a few dots read just as clearly as a full face, and they won't be begging to wash it off halfway through the evening.
One Signature Detail Per Character
Most of these come down to familiar colors, ordinary clothes and one or two details the character can't do without: a wig, a collar, a cape or a felt shape. Put your effort there and buy the rest cheaply. If you'll be out for hours, wear breathable layers and shoes you can walk in, and keep props light enough to forget about. Nearly every look adapts for kids, teens or adults by changing hem lengths and keeping the makeup age-appropriate. Solo characters are fun, but a pair or a group is where cartoon costumes really land, because the colors explain each other.
