Autumn is the season most people think they already know how to wear: rust, camel, olive, brown. Those colors are lovely, but they don't suit everyone at the face, and that's usually why a fall outfit that looks right on the hanger feels flat in the mirror. My work is figuring out which shades bring a face to life and which ones drain it. The thirty outfits below cover denim, office tailoring, skirts, knits and layers for both mild and cold days. Each one comes complete with shoes, bag and coat, plus a note on color or fit. Most of the pieces mix with each other, so you can build a fall wardrobe without buying everything new.

Warm or Cool? Testing Fall Colors Against Your Face
You don't need a professional session to find out which fall colors suit you. You need daylight, a mirror and a few pieces from your closet. I'd do this before shopping for any of the outfits below.
- Stand by a window in natural daylight, with no makeup or only light makeup. Indoor bulbs are too yellow to judge color.
- Hold a cream or camel piece under your chin, then a pure white or gray one. Notice which makes your skin look smoother and your eyes clearer.
- Try gold jewelry against silver. If gold looks better, warm colors like rust, mustard and olive usually suit you. If silver looks better, lean toward burgundy, plum, navy and charcoal.
- Look at shadows. A color that suits you softens under-eye shadows; a wrong one makes them deeper.
Many people end up somewhere in the middle and can wear both sides softly. If a color you love fails the test, wear it away from the face: in trousers, a skirt, boots or a bag.
1. Oversized Sweater And Straight-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

An oversized sweater and straight jeans is the outfit I see most often in fall, so the color of the sweater matters. It sits right under your face all day. Oatmeal suits warm, soft coloring; burgundy and forest green are kinder to cooler skin; chocolate works on deeper complexions. Tuck the front into high-rise jeans so the shape doesn't disappear. Leather ankle boots with a block heel. A short sweater suits petite frames; tall women can go longer. A light wool coat once it turns cold.
2. Trench Coat And Wide-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

A trench over wide-leg jeans covers the weather that's cool but not cold. Camel trenches are warm-toned; if camel turns you sallow, an olive or navy trench gives the same look. Put a fitted tee or fine knit underneath, since a loose top plus wide jeans plus a trench is a lot of fabric. Hem the jeans so they nearly reach the top of your shoe. Slim loafers or pointed flats keep the lines long. Tie the belt behind you when the coat is open.
3. Plaid Blazer And Black Trousers Autumn Outfit

A plaid blazer turns plain black trousers into an outfit. Look at the plaid's dominant color before you buy: a brown check leans warm, a gray or navy one leans cool, and whichever matches your coloring will look better near your face. An ivory tee, light turtleneck or soft blouse underneath. Straight or slightly wide black trousers. Black loafers for daytime, pointed boots for something sharper. A blazer that closes at the waist without pulling gives the most shape.
4. Leather Jacket And Slip Skirt Autumn Outfit

A leather jacket over a slip skirt mixes soft and tough in a way I always like. Chocolate, burgundy, olive or black skirt, a fitted crewneck knit, and a slightly relaxed leather jacket that ends at the waist or upper hip. A longer jacket cuts the skirt's line. Matte satin is more forgiving than high shine, which highlights every curve and crease. Sleek ankle boots, ballet flats or minimal sneakers. Sheer tights for warmth. Because the skirt moves rather than clings, it suits a wide range of shapes.
5. Cardigan And Midi Dress Autumn Outfit

A cardigan stretches a summer midi dress into fall. Choose a dress in a deeper print, then a cardigan pulled from one of the print's colors. That small link makes the two look bought together. Leave the top buttons open to show the neckline. A narrow belt over the cardigan gives a waist. Knee-high boots connect dress to shoe and cover the leg. If the dress is a bright summer print, the cardigan can calm it down: a dark cardigan over a busy pattern hides most of it.
6. Denim Shirt And Corduroy Pants Autumn Outfit

A denim shirt tucked into corduroy is fall by texture rather than color. Rust, tan, olive or brown cords against a mid-blue shirt is a classic warm-and-cool contrast that flatters most people because blue sits at the face. Straight or slightly flared cords. Brown loafers, ankle boots or clean sneakers. Roll the shirt sleeves on mild afternoons. A woven belt and a saddle bag. A cream cardigan or utility jacket on top if it gets cooler.
7. Sweater Vest And Button-Down Shirt Autumn Outfit

A sweater vest over a button-down gives warmth across the chest without heavy sleeves. White, pale blue or striped shirt, with a vest in a solid or pattern. The shirt is the color closest to your face, so choose the white carefully. Bright white suits high-contrast, cool coloring; softer people look better in off-white or pale blue. Straight trousers, chinos or dark jeans. Loafers or retro sneakers. Check that the vest armholes are deep enough; tight ones bunch the shirt at the shoulder.
8. Knit Dress And Knee-High Boots Autumn Outfit

A knit dress has the comfort of a sweater and looks more finished. A midi with enough structure to skim the body. Ribbed, cable and smooth merino all work. Knit dresses in very light colors like cream show the lines of underwear more than dark ones, so a smooth slip underneath helps. Camel, charcoal, navy and burgundy are the easier choices. Knee-high leather or suede boots with a walkable heel. A belt over a straighter dress gives shape. A long wool coat on cold days.
9. Utility Jacket And Black Jeans Autumn Outfit

A utility jacket makes basics feel more practical. Olive, khaki or navy over a striped long-sleeve tee or light sweater, with black straight jeans. Olive is one of the colors people assume is universal. It's not; it can make cool or very fair skin look tired. Navy is the safer alternative there. Tan ankle boots, black loafers or neutral sneakers. A leather crossbody leaves your hands free. Push the sleeves up when it's warm, add a scarf when it's cold. A drawstring waist gives shape.
10. Camel Coat And Monochrome Knitwear Autumn Outfit

Tonal dressing is where I see color knowledge pay off most. A cream, beige or soft brown sweater with matching trousers, then a camel coat between knee and mid-calf. The pieces shouldn't match exactly; slight differences and a mix of textures keep it from looking flat. If pale trousers aren't practical for you, reverse it with chocolate trousers and a cream knit. Brown boots or loafers and a chocolate bag deepen it. Gold jewelry brightens warm neutrals. It suits many shapes because each piece can be cut differently and the color still holds it together.
11. Suede Jacket And Dark Denim Autumn Outfit

A suede jacket brings depth and a little 1970s warmth to denim. Tan, tobacco, burgundy or olive suede over a light turtleneck or fitted top. Tobacco and tan suit warm coloring; burgundy works across more skin tones than most people expect. Dark jeans in straight, bootcut or a mild flare. Ankle boots or loafers close in shade to the jacket. Suede needs protector spray before damp weather and a suede brush to lift flattened nap. Faux suede is the easy-care option.
12. Puffer Vest And Leggings Autumn Outfit

A puffer vest keeps your core warm and your arms free. Wear it over a performance top, a fitted turtleneck or a light sweatshirt, with thick opaque leggings. Keep the base layers slim, because two puffy layers stacked together add bulk fast. Choose a longer vest if you want coverage at the hip. Chunky sneakers or weather-resistant lace-up boots for walking. A roomy crossbody and a cap. A matte vest in a neutral looks less like sportswear than a shiny one.
13. Chunky Cardigan And Leather Pants Autumn Outfit

A chunky cardigan softens the slick look of leather pants. Choose straight or relaxed faux leather pants, not super tight, with a thin tee or knit underneath. A textured cardigan in cream, gray, camel or a strong fall color. A saturated cardigan near the face is a good way to try a color you're unsure of, because you can take it off. Pointed flats, low ankle boots or polished sneakers. If leather pants feel too bold, coated black jeans give a similar finish.
14. Turtleneck And Pleated Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A fitted turtleneck and pleated midi skirt is a graceful shape that moves well. A black, cream or chocolate turtleneck. A turtleneck is the color most concentrated around your face, so pick the one that suits your coloring best: black for high contrast, cream for soft, chocolate for warm and deep. Skirt in burgundy, olive or navy. Tuck it fully. Narrow pleats look sleeker; wide pleats add volume. Knee-high boots, or loafers and tights. A cropped jacket if you need another layer.
15. Hoodie And Wool Coat Autumn Outfit

Hoodie and wool coat is a casual-meets-formal mix that I recommend often. A plain hoodie in gray, cream, navy or muted green under a straight camel, charcoal or black coat. The coat must have room through the shoulders; try it on over the hoodie. Keep logos small. Relaxed straight jeans or jogger-style trousers. Leather sneakers or chunky loafers. A gray hoodie under a charcoal coat is a quiet tonal combination that suits cool coloring; cream under camel suits warm.
16. Flannel Shirt And Relaxed Jeans Autumn Outfit

Flannel and jeans is the most familiar fall pairing there is. Wear the shirt buttoned with a partial tuck, or open over a fitted tank. Look closely at the plaid's colors. Red-and-black buffalo check is high contrast and suits people with strong coloring; soft brown and cream plaids suit lighter, softer coloring. Relaxed straight jeans in medium blue or washed black. Clogs, lace-up boots or retro sneakers. Avoid oversizing both pieces at once unless you want a very loose look.
17. Blazer And Graphic Tee Autumn Outfit

A graphic tee under a blazer adds personality to tailoring. Choose a clean tee with a simple vintage-style print, then a solid black, navy, camel or plaid blazer. The tee's base color should relate to the blazer; a white tee under black is sharp, a faded black tee under camel is softer. Straight jeans or ankle trousers. Loafers dress it up, sneakers relax it. Roll the blazer sleeves slightly. One small necklace, so it doesn't compete with the print.
18. Barn Jacket And Chino Pants Autumn Outfit

A barn jacket started on farms and now works in town. Brown, olive, navy or tan over a striped knit or crewneck, with straight chinos in cream, khaki or dark green. A little contrast between jacket and trousers is better than an exact match. Look for a corduroy collar, which adds texture right at the face. Loafers, sturdy ankle boots or sneakers. A canvas-and-leather tote and a small patterned neck scarf for color. Avoid very bulky jackets if you plan to wear one under a coat.
19. Denim Jacket And Sweater Dress Autumn Outfit

A denim jacket keeps a sweater dress casual. A midi or knee-length dress in rust, olive, charcoal, cream or burgundy. The pairing rule I use: a fitted dress wants a slightly roomier jacket, a loose dress wants a jacket with structure at the shoulders. Mid-wash denim is a cool blue, so it sits nicely against a warm rust or burgundy dress. Ankle boots, knee boots or sneakers. Light tights for warmth. A practical crossbody and medium hoops.
20. Long Cardigan And Wide-Leg Trousers Autumn Outfit

Long layers look elegant only if the proportions are controlled. A fitted tank or fine knit with high-rise wide trousers, then a long cardigan that falls below the hips but stays well clear of the hem. One color for all three pieces, cream, gray, brown or black, makes it read as a single long line. Pointed flats, loafers or heeled ankle boots keep the wide trousers from overwhelming you. A structured bag contrasts with the soft knit. A long pendant can add another vertical line.
21. Bouclé Jacket And Straight Jeans Autumn Outfit

A bouclé jacket makes plain denim look dressed up. A simple fitted top in white, black, navy or cream, straight jeans in a clean wash, and a cropped or hip-length bouclé in a neutral or soft check. Bouclé loops snag easily on rings, bag zips and velcro, so watch what rubs against it. Ballet flats, slingbacks, loafers or low boots. Leave it open, or fasten only the top buttons. It sits between casual and formal, which is useful for lunch meetings and events.
22. Bomber Jacket And Satin Pants Autumn Outfit

A bomber against satin trousers is a sporty-meets-fluid contrast. A clean bomber in olive, navy, brown or black over a fitted tee. Straight or wide satin pants in a neighboring neutral. Keep the bomber cropped or gathered at the waist so the trousers keep their long line. Matte satin is easier by day; high shine reflects light onto the legs and makes them look wider. Minimal sneakers for relaxed plans, pointed flats for dressier ones. Small metallic earrings.
23. Poncho And Slim Pants Autumn Outfit

A poncho is the easiest outer layer for cool, dry days. Wear it over a fitted long-sleeve or thin turtleneck so the arms don't bulk up. Slim straight trousers, ponte pants or dark jeans balance the wide shape. Knee-high or slim ankle boots. Carry a crossbody under the poncho, or choose a top-handle bag that won't pull the fabric. Choose a poncho ending above the knee so you can walk freely. A camel or gray poncho reads as a neutral; a check pattern adds interest.
24. Shacket And Cargo Pants Autumn Outfit

A shacket and cargo pants is a relaxed outfit with lots of layering room. A fitted tank, tee or fine knit in a neutral, then straight cargo pants in olive, tan, brown or black. Add an oversized plaid or solid shacket and leave it open for a long vertical line. Cargo pants with flat pockets add less volume at the hips. Chunky sneakers, lug-sole boots or leather trainers. Olive cargo and a red-toned plaid shacket is a warm, earthy pairing; black cargo with gray plaid is cooler.
25. Belted Blazer And Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A belt changes a relaxed blazer into something shaped and ready for an occasion. Wear a camisole, fitted tee or light turtleneck under a hip-length blazer, with a fluid midi skirt in satin, knit or crepe. Belt the blazer at your natural waist with a medium-width belt. Make sure the blazer closes without pulling first, or the belt highlights the strain. Tonal pairings like chocolate with camel or charcoal with black keep the layers calm. Knee-high boots or pointed pumps.
26. Quilted Jacket And Knit Pants Autumn Outfit

Knit pants look presentable under a structured quilted jacket. Straight or slightly wide knit pants with a secure waistband, and a matching fine-knit top. A short quilted jacket in olive, black, navy or tan. Keep the pants off the ground; knit hems wick up rainwater from wet sidewalks and stretch out. Leather sneakers, clogs or weatherproof ankle boots. A structured crossbody gives shape. A matching knit base looks streamlined under the jacket and is very comfortable for a long trip.
27. Colorful Sweater And Neutral Trousers Autumn Outfit

Fall doesn't have to be only brown and black, and this is the outfit for anyone who feels dull in earth tones. A sweater in cobalt, tomato red, plum, teal or bright green with neutral trousers. Cobalt and plum suit cool coloring; tomato red and teal often suit warm coloring. Hold a few colors up to your face in daylight and see which ones make your skin look clearer. Charcoal, camel, navy or cream trousers. Shoes that relate to the trousers. Two or three colors in total.
28. Turtleneck And Denim Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A denim midi gives structure to a fitted turtleneck. Choose one with a front slit or an A-line shape so you can walk properly. Tuck in a cream, burgundy, black or striped turtleneck and add a leather belt. Knee-high boots cover the leg; ankle boots work with tights. Denim with a little stretch is much more comfortable for sitting. A cropped jacket or wool blazer keeps the skirt in view. The blue of the denim is a cool neutral, so a warm burgundy turtleneck balances it.
29. Scarf Coat And Bootcut Jeans Autumn Outfit

A scarf coat has the scarf built in, so you get a layered look in one piece. It also puts the coat's color right against your face, which makes the shade more important than with an ordinary coat. Camel suits warm coloring, gray and navy suit cool, chocolate suits deep. Wear it over a fine knit, with dark bootcut jeans that fit at the hip and widen below the knee. Heeled ankle boots let the bootcut fall cleanly. Small earrings, since the scarf already frames the face.
30. Matching Knit Set And Long Coat Autumn Outfit

A matching knit set is comfortable and looks coordinated. A ribbed sweater with a midi skirt, wide pants or straight trousers in cream, taupe, gray, burgundy or chocolate. Check the knit in daylight; some sets look opaque indoors and turn sheer outside. Layer a long tailored coat in a complementary shade. Leather sneakers for travel, loafers for work, heeled ankle boots for evening. A structured bag keeps it from looking like loungewear. A one-color set in a shade that suits you does almost all the work.
Knitwear That Pills, Stretches or Lasts
Half these outfits rely on a sweater, cardigan or knit set. The fiber decides how they look by the second winter.
Reading the label
Wool and merino are warm and recover their shape well; they pill a little at friction points like the underarms and where a bag strap rubs. Cashmere is soft but pills more, especially in loose, cheaper knits. Acrylic is cheap and easy to wash, but it pills heavily and can lose its shape after a few washes. Cotton knits don't pill much, though they stretch at the elbows and hem and aren't as warm.
Keeping them in shape
Fold sweaters instead of hanging them, since hanging pulls the shoulders out of shape. Wash wool in cold water on a gentle cycle or by hand and dry it flat. Remove pills with a sweater comb or fabric shaver rather than pulling them off. Rest a sweater for a day between wears so the fibers can recover.
Your Best Fall Shades Are Already in Your Closet
A good fall wardrobe is layers, textures, comfortable shoes and colors that work together and with you. Start by recreating the outfits above from pieces you already own. Notice which colors you reach for and which ones sit in the closet; that tells you more about your palette than any trend report. Then fill practical gaps: a dependable coat, comfortable boots, versatile denim, tailored trousers and a few knits in your best shades. Adjust hems, fits and layer weights to your proportions and weather.
