Fall is the easiest season for modest dressing, in my view. The layers you need for coverage are the same layers the weather asks for, so nothing feels like a compromise. The challenge is warmth without bulk: three layers plus a hijab can quickly start to feel heavy around the neck and shoulders. The pieces that do the most work this time of year are long coats, relaxed tailoring, maxi skirts, knit dresses and abayas, in burgundy, olive, camel, chocolate brown and navy. I start with breathable base pieces and add layers that come off easily when the afternoon warms up. Below are outfits for casual days, work, school and dressier plans, with notes on fit, fabric and how each one sits with a hijab.

Hijab Fabrics for Wind, Damp and Cold
In fall the hijab does more work than in summer. It keeps your neck warm, it has to stay in place in wind, and it sits against a coat collar all day. The fabric matters more than the color.
- Jersey grips well and hardly needs pins, which makes it the one I'd choose for windy days and long commutes. Thicker jersey adds some warmth too.
- Modal is soft and breathes, so it's comfortable indoors after a cold walk. It slips a little more than jersey, so an under-cap helps.
- Chiffon looks polished but slides around and gives almost no warmth. Save it for indoor events, or layer it over an under-cap and a thin jersey.
- Wool and cashmere blends are the warmest. Some people find pure wool itchy against the face, and blends can pill where the fabric rubs against the coat collar.
- Cotton is breathable but absorbs rain and stays damp, which gets cold quickly.
One small fall problem: static. Wool coats and synthetic hijabs together can make the fabric cling and crackle. A cotton or modal under-cap between your hair and the hijab cuts most of it, and a light mist of water on your hands before adjusting the hijab helps on dry days.
1. Camel Trench Coat Hijabi Fall Outfit

A camel trench is the coat I'd buy first for a modest fall wardrobe, because it goes over everything and covers well. Under it, a cream mock neck and loose black wide-leg trousers, with a chocolate brown hijab that adds depth near the face without going dark. Wear it open on mild afternoons and knot the belt loosely when it cools; a tightly cinched trench pulls at the hips, which defeats the point of a loose silhouette. If you're petite, choose one that stops at the lower calf rather than the ankle so it doesn't swallow you. Water-resistant ankle boots and a structured shoulder bag finish it, and dark straight-leg jeans make a casual swap for the trousers.
2. Oversized Blazer Hijabi Fall Outfit

Moving from class to lunch to a meeting? An oversized charcoal blazer over a long-sleeve black top, with loose gray tailored trousers, covers all three. Before buying, I check two lengths: the blazer should fall below the hips, and the trousers should skim the leg rather than cling when you sit. A dove-gray hijab keeps it tonal, while muted burgundy brings in some color. Black loafers and a structured tote keep it smart. On cold days, a thin thermal under the top adds warmth without thickening the blazer's line. Earrings worn under the hijab and a simple watch are all the detail it needs.
3. Knit Maxi Dress Hijabi Fall Outfit

On a cold morning, a knit maxi dress is one decision instead of three. I look for an opaque rib with long sleeves, a high neck and room through the hips, in olive, mocha or deep navy. Knit dresses do tend to follow the body more than woven ones, especially after a few hours of sitting, so I'd always plan a layer over the top: a long wool coat or an open cardigan. If you want shape, put a wide belt over the outer layer, not on the dress itself. A coordinating jersey hijab, knee-high boots hidden under the hem, and a medium top-handle bag in smooth leather against the soft knit.
4. Denim Jacket Hijabi Fall Outfit

A long denim jacket is the early-fall layer, before the coats come out. Pick an oversized medium wash that reaches at least the upper thigh; most standard denim jackets end at the waist, which works over a maxi dress but not over a tunic and skirt. If you can't find a long one, a denim shacket or duster solves it. Put it over a black maxi dress, or a loose black tunic with a matching maxi skirt, and let a taupe hijab soften the blue and black. White sneakers and a crossbody keep it casual. When it gets colder, a thin crew-neck sweater fits under the denim without changing the look.
5. Pleated Maxi Skirt Hijabi Fall Outfit

Pleated maxi skirts move when you walk, which gives a plain sweater outfit some life. A rust, burgundy or forest-green skirt with a fine-knit cream sweater that falls below the waist. If the sweater is shorter, put a long white shirt under it so the hem shows. I'd look for narrow heat-set pleats, which hold their shape through washing, and avoid skirts with lots of gathered volume at the waistband, since that adds width right where the sweater ends. A plain beige hijab keeps attention on the skirt. Pointed ankle boots or sleek loafers, and a structured handbag. It's a step dressier than jeans, good for work or a family visit.
6. Sweater Vest Hijabi Fall Outfit

A sweater vest over a white shirt is the preppy option here. Start with an oversized button-down that covers the hips, then a relaxed argyle or solid knit vest, and wide-leg trousers in black, espresso or camel. For the hijab, I pick up a quieter color from the vest rather than its loudest shade, which keeps the face area calm. Check two fit points: the shirt sleeves shouldn't bunch inside the vest's armholes, and the shirt collar needs to lie flat so it doesn't push against the hijab at the neck. A collar with a bit of stiffness behaves better. Loafers with dark socks, and a leather backpack or tote.
7. Long Cardigan Hijabi Fall Outfit

A long cardigan is the outfit I'd suggest for days when the temperature keeps changing. Oatmeal, taupe or heather gray over a high-neck top and fluid wide-leg pants in a similar shade, so there's one unbroken line down the front. The cardigan needs some body to it. Very soft, loosely knitted ones cling and pull around the hips, while a firmer knit hangs straight. A jersey or modal hijab in warm brown stays comfortable for a full day. Patch pockets save carrying a bag. Neutral sneakers for errands or leather ankle boots for something smarter, plus a roomy tote.
8. Leather Jacket Hijabi Fall Outfit

A leather jacket gives modest dressing a harder edge. I'd look for a slightly oversized black or dark brown one that reaches at least the hips, over a long knit tunic and a flowing satin or jersey maxi skirt. Smooth leather against soft fabric is all the interest the outfit needs, so I skip prints. Biker jackets have wide lapels that can crowd the hijab at the neck; a collarless leather jacket sits more cleanly and looks softer. Espresso, taupe or burgundy hijab, depending on the jacket. Lug-sole ankle boots grip on wet pavement, and a simple shoulder bag with minimal hardware finishes it.
9. Plaid Shacket Hijabi Fall Outfit

A roomy plaid shacket in earthy colors is about as fall as clothing gets. Wear it over a plain black or cream turtleneck with loose straight-leg jeans in a dark, clean wash. A solid hijab in camel, olive or chocolate brown takes one color from the plaid without fighting it. The shacket should pass the hips and button comfortably across the shoulders; if it pulls between the buttons, size up. A big, colorful plaid means everything else stays plain. On cold mornings, a thin quilted vest slips underneath unseen. Chunky sneakers or lace-up boots, and a crossbody for hands-free days.
10. Monochrome Brown Hijabi Fall Outfit

An all-brown outfit only works if the shades differ enough to see each piece. I'd go for a dark brown maxi skirt or wide-leg trousers, a lighter cocoa knit tunic and a camel wool coat, with the hijab somewhere between the top and coat colors. Texture does the rest: ribbed knit, brushed wool and smooth leather keep a one-color outfit from looking flat. Brown suits warm complexions well, but on cool or very fair skin it can drain the face, so a cream underscarf or a hijab with some beige in it brightens things. Dark brown knee-high boots under the hem, an espresso bag and gold-tone accessories.
11. Burgundy Abaya Hijabi Fall Outfit

Burgundy turns a plain abaya into a fall piece on its own. Look for a closed abaya in crepe, twill or a brushed fabric with enough weight to fall straight rather than cling. Thin, light fabrics catch wind and static against tights, which a heavier crepe avoids. On cold days, a lightweight thermal dress goes underneath. A taupe, blush-beige or soft gray hijab lifts the deep color near the face. Pointed ankle boots and a dark brown structured bag. An open burgundy abaya also works over a cream knit and matching wide-leg pants. Keep the embellishment light so the color does the work.
12. Olive Utility Jacket Hijabi Fall Outfit

An olive utility jacket is what I'd wear for a day of errands outdoors. A long, loose cut over a beige knit and a black A-line maxi skirt, with a black or muted taupe hijab tying the top and bottom together. Many utility jackets have an internal drawstring at the waist; I leave it loose, since pulling it in creates a bunch of fabric right at the waistline that works against a straight silhouette. Fasten just a few central buttons. In rainy weather, choose a water-resistant jacket and a heavier skirt that won't blow around. Lace-up boots and a sturdy tote; gold hardware looks good on olive.
13. Denim Maxi Skirt Hijabi Fall Outfit

A dark denim maxi skirt gives you the ease of jeans at full length. Pair it with an oversized striped sweater, cream and navy or cream and burgundy, and a plain navy hijab to tie the stripes to the denim. The slit is where I'd be careful: a high front slit opens when you sit or climb stairs, so look for one that starts low, or a back vent instead. An A-line cut is easier to walk in than a narrow pencil shape. If the sweater ends at the waist, layer a longer cotton shirt underneath. White sneakers for campus, brown ankle boots for something more autumnal.
14. Wool Coat Hijabi Fall Outfit

A tailored wool coat makes basic layers look put together in seconds. Black, camel, charcoal or navy, long, over a mock-neck sweater and loose trousers in tones close to each other. Try a coat on with your thickest layer underneath and lift your arms: if it pulls across the shoulders, it's too small, however good it looks standing still. Single-breasted cuts tend to sit flatter than double-breasted ones. A lightweight hijab sits more neatly at the collar than a bulky one. When it gets colder, a thin insulated vest underneath adds more warmth than a chunky sweater, without restricting your arms.
15. Hoodie And Trench Hijabi Fall Outfit

Hoodie under trench sounds odd, but it's a great travel and campus outfit. A longline gray or cream hoodie, relaxed black trousers, and a loose camel trench over the top with the hood pulled out above the collar. The hoodie needs to be medium weight; thick fleece won't let the coat close and makes the shoulders bulge. Its hem should cover the hips without bunching inside the trench. A black cotton hijab keeps the neckline clean against the hood. Supportive sneakers and a nylon shoulder bag, and a cap over the hijab if you like that look.
16. Sweater Dress And Coat Hijabi Fall Outfit

A long sweater dress with a structured coat is warmth with very few pieces. A loose column or A-line dress in charcoal, navy or warm beige, and a contrasting wool coat: camel over charcoal or deep green over beige. Hold an open-weave knit up to the light before buying; if you can see through it, it needs an opaque slip underneath. For shape, I'd pick a dress with seaming rather than add a tight belt. Tall boots should fit under the dress without the hem catching on the boot top. A coordinating hijab and a structured bag. It's suitable for an office or a museum visit.
17. Quilted Vest Hijabi Fall Outfit

On bright, dry fall days, a quilted vest is all the outerwear you need. A longline cream, stone or olive vest over an oversized sweatshirt or chunky knit tunic, with a flowing black maxi skirt and a hijab matched to the skirt. Side slits let the vest sit over the hips instead of riding up. A high collar is warm, but check that it leaves room for the hijab; a stand collar that's too close will crush the fabric. Sporty sneakers and a roomy tote make it good for walking. When it cools, switch the sweatshirt for a thermal knit and add tall socks under the skirt.
18. Floral Maxi Dress Hijabi Fall Outfit

A dark floral maxi works into fall with heavier pieces around it. Look for long sleeves and burgundy, olive, navy or rust flowers on a dark ground. For the hijab, I pull a minor color from the print rather than the dominant one, which links the two without looking matched. A long cardigan suits a loose dress; a shorter jacket only works if the dress already gives full coverage. If the neckline is low, a thin high-neck layer underneath fixes it. Brown ankle boots and a saddle bag. Keep accessories minimal, since the print is already busy. Good for family gatherings and daytime events.
19. Black Abaya And Plaid Coat Hijabi Fall Outfit

A plain black abaya with a long plaid coat over it is a complete outfit with very little thought. Choose a coat with black, camel, cream or muted red in the check so it sits naturally over the dark base, and a solid camel or taupe hijab to soften the contrast near the face. The abaya underneath should be plain, without heavy embroidery, which can catch on coat linings and adds bulk. A straight or gently flared shape sits smoothly under the coat. Black ankle boots and a bag in one of the plaid's colors. Indoors, without the coat, a textured bag carries the outfit.
20. Wide-Leg Jeans Hijabi Fall Outfit

Wide-leg jeans are casual, but loose enough to feel modest. Dark indigo or black, high-rise, with room through the hips and legs. Over them, a long striped shirt or oversized knit tunic that passes the hips, and a cropped jacket on top for structure. I always check the hem in the shoes I'll wear: wide jeans should nearly reach the shoe, but if they touch the ground they'll soak up rain and fray at the back. A plain jersey hijab in navy, burgundy or taupe. Loafers, platform sneakers or low-heeled boots, plus a structured tote.
21. Satin Maxi Skirt Hijabi Fall Outfit

Satin with a chunky knit is one of my favorite contrasts for fall. A chocolate, olive or black satin maxi skirt with an oversized cream or oatmeal cable-knit sweater, which makes the shine feel seasonal. The skirt should be opaque with an elastic waist and enough fullness that it doesn't cling to your legs as you walk; satin shows every line when it's tight. A matte chiffon or modal hijab close to the skirt's color. If the sweater is short, layer a shirt underneath for hip coverage. Pointed ankle boots or loafers on mild days, plus a structured mini tote.
22. Corduroy Blazer Hijabi Fall Outfit

Corduroy makes a blazer feel relaxed. Try an oversized brown, rust or deep green one over a black mock neck with loose cream trousers. Fine-wale cord looks smarter, while wide-wale reads more casual. The blazer should cover the hips and leave room to layer. Cream trousers mark easily in wet weather, so on rainy days I'd switch to charcoal or black. A hijab with a small muted pattern adds interest, though solid taupe keeps it simple. Dark brown loafers, a leather tote and gold-tone jewelry suit the warm color of the cord. Good for work or university.
23. Puffer Coat Hijabi Fall Outfit

For cold late-fall mornings, a long puffer. Pick a streamlined design in black, olive, stone or chocolate brown and wear it over a matching knit set, a loose tunic and wide-leg pants, or a simple maxi dress. A jersey hijab tucks under the collar and stays put in wind. Long puffers can restrict your stride, so look for side zips or snap vents at the hem. A matte finish is more versatile than shiny nylon. A compact crossbody worn under the coat is secure and handy. Weather-resistant sneakers or flat boots with textured soles, for commuting and travel.
24. Preppy Maxi Skirt Hijabi Fall Outfit

Preppy fall starts with an A-line maxi skirt in plaid, herringbone or solid navy. Add a crisp white shirt and a relaxed crew-neck sweater in burgundy, forest green or camel, with the collar, cuffs and shirt hem showing. Hold the skirt up to daylight before you buy it: some lighter woven fabrics turn see-through outdoors. A neutral hijab keeps the layers from looking busy. Loafers with opaque socks and a structured satchel. On colder days, thin leggings under the skirt and a long navy coat. Suits classes, libraries and casual offices.
25. Two-Piece Abaya Hijabi Fall Outfit

A two-piece abaya set is the most flexible thing here. A long open abaya over a matching inner dress, sleeveless or long-sleeved depending on the temperature and how much coverage you want. Mocha, olive, burgundy or charcoal, with a hijab in the same color family. The outer layer also works on its own over trousers and a knit top, which doubles the use of the set. I'd look for a fabric with some weight that resists wrinkles. When it gets cold, choose a coat a little roomier than the abaya so the sleeves don't bunch. Pointed boots dress it up; clean sneakers keep it casual.
Where the Coat Collar Meets the Hijab
Most fall outfits look fine until the coat goes on, and then the hijab gets crushed, pulled or pushed up by the collar. A few things I check when coats and hijabs have to work together:
Collar shape
Collarless coats, shawl collars and simple notch lapels leave the most room. Big funnel necks and stand collars press against the hijab fabric and push it up toward the chin. If you love a high-collar coat, try a slimmer hijab style tucked inside it rather than draped over.
Tucked in or draped out
Tucking the ends of the hijab inside the coat keeps them out of the wind and adds warmth at the chest. Draping them over the coat shows off a nice fabric but leaves them flapping. On a cold, windy day, I tuck.
Hoods
A hood pulled over a hijab in rain works, but it drags the fabric back when you take it down. A wide-brimmed rain hat or an umbrella treats the hijab better, if you can manage one.
Scarves on top
A wool scarf over a hijab adds warmth, but it also adds bulk at the neck. I'd only add one with a collarless coat, and keep it in a color close to the hijab so it doesn't look like two separate things.
Build the Neutrals, Then Add Burgundy
A practical fall wardrobe works when every piece goes with several others. Abayas, maxi skirts, knit dresses, relaxed trousers and long coats cover most temperatures and occasions. Start with neutrals you trust, then add autumn color through hijabs, coats, skirts or a bag. Pay attention to opacity, length, how easily you can move and how much room each piece leaves for layering. Changing shoes, from boots to loafers to sneakers, shifts the mood without a new outfit. Above all, adapt each idea to your climate, your own understanding of modesty, your body and your daily routine.
