Fall golf is mostly a temperature problem. You tee off in a chill, the wind picks up on the open holes, and by the back nine you're warm enough to want short sleeves. So I dress golfers from a breathable base outward, with one or two layers that come off without wrecking the outfit: a quarter-zip, a thin sweater, a vest or a packable jacket. Nothing should pull across the back when you swing. Burgundy, camel, navy, forest green and cream give you the season without looking like a costume. One warning before you shop: clubs set their own clothing rules, so check yours before wearing a shorter skort, a collarless top or jogger-style pants. Here are 25 combinations I'd put together for autumn rounds.

How a Fall Round Strips Down From Tee to 18th Green
A fall round can run four or five hours, and on many autumn days the temperature climbs fifteen degrees or more between the first tee and the last putt. That's why I plan golf outfits in layers that come off in a set order, rather than one warm piece you're stuck in.
- Base: a fitted polo or mock-neck in a fabric that pulls sweat away from your skin. Cotton holds damp, and damp turns cold the moment the wind hits.
- Mid layer: a thin quarter-zip, a fine-gauge sweater or a vest. This is the layer you'll take off around the turn, so it should fold small enough to fit in a bag pocket.
- Shell: a packable windbreaker or rain jacket that only comes out for the open, exposed holes or a passing shower.
- Extras: a thin neck gaiter, thermal tights under a skort or a spare glove. Each weighs nothing and fixes one specific cold spot.
Check one thing before every round: each layer should fit over the one below it without pulling at the shoulders. If two layers fight each other, you'll feel it at the top of your backswing.
1. Burgundy Polo And Camel Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Burgundy and camel is the pairing I reach for when someone is playing a traditional club for the first time and doesn't want to guess wrong. Tuck a short-sleeve burgundy performance polo into camel pants, and carry a cream quarter-zip for the cold first holes and the last ones as the sun drops. Keep the leg straight or only gently tapered, because a tight knee fights you every time you crouch to read a putt. A medium-width brown belt ties the two warm colors together. White waterproof shoes, a burgundy cap, a neutral glove and a structured tote finish it. Classic, yes, but nobody will think you tried too hard.
2. Cream Quarter-Zip And Olive Pants Fall Golf Outfit

On a crisp morning I'd layer a cream quarter-zip over a fitted white polo and pair them with olive performance pants. The first thing I check is the shoulder: do a slow backswing in the fitting room, and if the knit pulls tight across the upper back, size up. Stretch pants with deep pockets and a slightly tapered ankle keep loose fabric off your shoes. Tan waterproof shoes and a matching belt warm up the pale top half, and a cream cap, small studs and an olive bag round it out. When the day heats up, tie the quarter-zip to your bag, not your waist. Sleeves knotted at the hips flap through every swing.
3. Navy Vest And Striped Top Fall Golf Outfit

A vest is the most underrated piece in a fall golf bag. It keeps your core warm and leaves your arms completely free, which a jacket never quite does. Here a navy vest goes over a white-and-navy striped long-sleeve polo, with a navy skort that has secure undershorts and real pockets. Add opaque navy thermal tights on cold days. White waterproof shoes and a navy visor lift the dark palette. I always look for a two-way zipper or stretch side panels, because a stiff vest rides up and bunches at the waist when you settle into your stance. A small white crossbody can carry your things to and from the course.
4. Forest Green Mock-Neck And Plaid Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Forest green behaves like a neutral on the course. It goes with navy, tan and cream as easily as black does, but it reads as autumn. Start with a fitted mock-neck in a breathable fabric and tuck it into plaid pants with thin green, tan and cream lines. A small plaid like this is far easier to style than a big tartan, because you only need to pull one color from it. A slim tan belt, cream socks and brown-and-white spikeless shoes come next, plus a camel cap for that low, glaring fall sun. Add a light cream sweater if it's cool. Keep jewelry to small hoops or studs; anything that dangles will swing when you do.
5. Black Golf Dress And Quilted Vest Fall Golf Outfit

There's no reason to put a black golf dress away in September. Choose one with a collar or mock neck, a slightly flared skirt, built-in shorts and stretch through the bodice, then add a slim quilted vest in tan or camel. Black thermal tights cover cold mornings, and black-and-white waterproof shoes keep the line long. A tan cap and a small black belt bag (worn before and after play, not during) finish it. Before you buy, bend over as if you're picking a ball out of the cup. If you feel exposed, the skirt is too short for golf, whatever the size label says. The same dress walks straight into the clubhouse for lunch.
6. Rust Polo And Navy Skort Fall Golf Outfit

Rust is warm without being loud, which matters at clubs where bright colors still get looks. Pair a fitted rust polo with a navy skort. The skort detail I care most about is grippy undershorts: plain ones creep up over 18 holes of walking. On cooler days, layer a white long-sleeve performance top under the polo and add navy knee-high golf socks or opaque tights. White-and-navy shoes, a navy visor and a brown leather-look belt keep it tidy. A packable navy windbreaker lives in the bag for the forecast that changes at the turn. Every piece here also works with the golf basics you probably already own.
7. Gray Sweater And Black Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Gray over black is the outfit I suggest when someone tells me they don't want to think about it. Put a lightweight gray V-neck golf sweater over a crisp white polo and let the collar sit on top of the neckline. Black ankle-length pants in a wrinkle-resistant stretch fabric go underneath, with a slim black belt. White spikeless shoes stop all that dark color looking heavy, and a black cap and gray tote complete it. Two fit checks: the sweater should be thin enough to wear under a windbreaker, and the ribbed cuffs should stay up at the wrist, away from your grip. It suits a public course, a work outing or a more formal club equally well.
8. Waterproof Jacket And Navy Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Rain gear is where golf outfits usually go wrong, because most waterproof jackets are cut boxy and stiff. Start with a pale blue long-sleeve performance polo and navy pants, then add a lightweight white waterproof jacket with sealed or covered zippers, adjustable cuffs and stretch across the back. A slightly shaped waist stops it from swallowing you, but test the swing in it before you commit. Waterproof navy shoes, moisture-resistant socks and a navy cap handle the rest. Wear your hair in a low ponytail or braid so it sits under the cap in wind. I always pack a spare glove and dry socks in a zip pouch; wet socks by the 12th hole ruin a round.
9. Tan Cardigan And Pleated Skort Fall Golf Outfit

A fine-knit tan cardigan gives a sporty outfit a softer, slightly old-school feel. Button it over a fitted navy polo and wear it with a navy pleated skort. The cardigan has to have some stretch and a close cut; a loose, drapey knit swings forward when you address the ball. Check that the skort pockets lie flat under the pleats rather than pushing them open. Cream knee-high socks or thermal tights depending on the temperature, white-and-tan shoes, a navy cap and a small cream tote finish it. When the afternoon warms, the cardigan comes off and you still look put together. I'd wear this one for a resort course or a relaxed country club round.
10. All-Black Layered Fall Golf Outfit

All black is the easiest base for layering because nothing has to match. A long-sleeve black mock-neck, slim black pants and a black quilted vest with tonal hardware and stretch side panels. The trick to keeping monochrome from looking flat is texture: matte jersey, a quilted vest and a smoother pant fabric all catch light differently. Bring in contrast with white-and-black shoes, a white glove and a light gray cap, and a narrow belt with a matte silver buckle if you want a defined waist. Skip heavy fleece; once you've walked three holes you'll be overheating in it. Black also hides the damp grass marks that fall rounds leave behind, which makes it a smart choice for golf trips.
11. Pink Quarter-Zip And Charcoal Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Pink works in fall when you pair it with something dark enough to anchor it. Wear a blush or dusty pink quarter-zip over a white collared polo, with tapered charcoal pants. The charcoal does the grounding; pale pink over pale khaki would wash out. Gray-and-white waterproof shoes keep the lower half neutral, and a pink cap brings the color up near the face. If the afternoon forecast is warm, look for a quarter-zip with mesh panels under the arms or along the back. Carry a light gray vest for exposed holes. Silver studs and a charcoal bag finish a look that feels feminine without leaning on prints or ruffles.
12. Mustard Polo And Navy Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Mustard is a tricky color to get right. Go for a muted, golden shade rather than anything close to neon, which looks more like safety gear than fall. A mustard polo tucked into high-rise or mid-rise navy performance pants, with a brown belt, is the base. On chilly mornings add a cream zip-front vest. Navy-and-white shoes, a navy cap and a cream glove keep everything else calm, and that's deliberate: one strong color per outfit is plenty, so skip prints. Gold-tone studs pick up the warmth of the polo. I'd wear this in early fall, when short sleeves are still comfortable but you'll want that one removable layer.
13. Plaid Skort And Cream Sweater Vest Fall Golf Outfit

A plaid skort only looks sophisticated when everything around it is plain. Choose a plaid with some mix of navy, burgundy, cream or forest green, and wear it with a solid white long-sleeve polo and a cream sweater vest. The sweater vest is the reason this works in cold weather: it covers your torso while your arms stay free. Navy thermal tights pick up the darkest color in the plaid. Navy-and-white shoes, a burgundy cap and a narrow navy belt finish it. Size the sweater vest fitted or semi-fitted. An oversized one twists around your middle during the swing and never sits right again. It's a modern take on collegiate golf style.
14. Long-Sleeve Golf Dress And Tights Fall Golf Outfit

For days when you don't want to plan anything, a long-sleeve golf dress is one piece and you're done. Look for a mock neck or zip collar, a defined waist, built-in shorts and a skirt with enough room for a full stride. Dark teal, burgundy or navy all suit the season. Add opaque black thermal tights and black waterproof shoes for warmth and grip, and a cropped black vest if you need insulation without hiding the dress. A black cap, simple studs and a compact crossbody for arriving and leaving finish it. Private clubs are the places most likely to have rules on dress length and neckline, so check before you go.
15. Puffer Vest And Thermal Top Fall Golf Outfit

Cold early tee times are where people overdress. One heavy coat traps heat, then you're sweating by the fourth hole and can't take it off without being cold again. Two light layers are better. Start with a fitted cream thermal golf top and add a slim olive puffer vest, with black straight-leg pants that have plenty of stretch through the hips and knees. Black waterproof shoes, cream socks and an olive cap finish it, and a thin neck gaiter comes off easily once the sun warms up. Pick a vest with flexible sides and no padding over the shoulders, or it will cut into your range of motion. This is my choice for a walking round, where your body temperature climbs and drops all morning.
16. Blue Polo And Khaki Pants Fall Golf Outfit

If you're new to golf or unsure how dressy a course is, a denim-blue polo and khaki pants is the safest answer I know. Wear a long-sleeve polo on cool days, or a short-sleeve one over a thin white base top, and add a navy quarter-zip you can pull off when the sun comes out. A medium-brown belt goes with the khakis and with tan-and-white shoes. A navy cap and a cream or beige canvas tote finish it. Check the pant fabric before buying. Summer-weight khaki feels cold in October, so you want something a bit heavier that still has four-way stretch. Everything here is familiar and easy to put together.
17. Burgundy Quarter-Zip And Black Skort Fall Golf Outfit

A burgundy quarter-zip is the quickest way to make a black skort feel like October. Wear it over a fitted black or white performance polo, depending on how much contrast you want at the collar, with opaque black tights under the skort. Black waterproof shoes keep the leg line long and unbroken, and a burgundy visor repeats the color near your face. The detail I look at is the inside of the quarter-zip: a smooth lining glides over the polo, while a brushed one grabs it and bunches at the elbow. A curved hem looks better worn untucked. Keep a light black rain shell in the bag for cold starts and passing showers.
18. White Sun Shirt And Brown Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Sunny fall days still need sun coverage, and low autumn light can be harsh on the face. Pair a white long-sleeve golf shirt with chocolate-brown performance pants for a crisp look in warmer, earthier colors. Choose the shirt's collar by your course's rules: a stand collar, a quarter-zip neckline or a proper polo collar. Add a camel vest for the cold start and take it off as the day warms. Tan-and-white shoes, a brown belt and a cream cap keep the palette warm. Wear secure sport sunglasses. With a plain white top, ribbed panels or fine perforation add enough texture to stop it looking flat. It handles both warm and cool fall regions.
19. Striped Rugby Polo And Navy Pants Fall Golf Outfit

A rugby polo is a fun swap for a plain shirt, but only in a golf-specific performance version. Heavy cotton rugby shirts are stiff, hot and slow to dry. Look for broad cream, burgundy and navy stripes in a light technical fabric, and pair it with tailored navy pants and white waterproof shoes. A navy quilted vest adds warmth while leaving the striped collar and sleeves on show. A cream cap, navy belt and small earrings are enough. Fit matters: snug enough to stay put, loose enough that your shoulders turn freely. Bold stripes take up the whole pattern budget, so keep every other piece solid.
20. Teal Pullover And Gray Skort Fall Golf Outfit

Deep teal looks rich against gray, and it's a good step away from black and navy if you want color without being loud. Layer a teal performance pullover over a white collared polo, with a charcoal golf skort and gray thermal tights on colder days. White-and-gray shoes keep the bottom half light, and a teal cap makes the color look intended. I'd look for stretch cuffs and a hem that stays put without gripping your hips, plus a short front zip you can open to release heat as you walk. Carry a compact gray windbreaker that matches the skort and tights.
21. Camel Sweater And Burgundy Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Camel and burgundy is one of my favorite fall color pairings, on the course or off it. Wear a fine-gauge camel crewneck over a white or cream collared golf shirt, with burgundy tapered pants and a slim brown belt. Cream-and-tan shoes lighten the lower half, and a camel cap repeats the sweater. The knit needs stretch and should sit close without clinging. Loose knit shifts mid-swing and you'll feel it pull at the shoulder. Push the sleeves up only if the cuffs stay there. Add a light cream vest on colder days. Every piece also mixes with navy, black and olive, so it earns its place in the bag.
22. Navy Golf Dress And Rain Jacket Fall Golf Outfit

Wet, mild fall days call for a navy golf dress under a pale gray rain jacket. The dress should have long or elbow-length sleeves, a zip collar, built-in shorts and pockets that close. The jacket should be light and breathable, with enough room to swing in but not cut so wide that it boxes you in. Navy thermal tights are optional: on for a cool round, off on a warm early-fall one. White-and-navy waterproof shoes give you grip on soggy turf, and a pale gray cap and navy glove finish it. When the rain stops, the jacket goes in the bag and the dress still looks finished on its own, because the palette is so restrained.
23. Orange Vest And Olive Pants Fall Golf Outfit

Burnt orange is a lot of color, so I like it in a vest, where it covers less of you than a full top would. Layer it over a cream long-sleeve polo with olive pants. Orange, cream and olive sit together naturally, and each piece still pairs with other neutrals. Look for a lightly quilted front and stretch back panels so the vest stays warm without stiffness. Brown-and-white shoes, a cream cap and a tan belt finish it. Keep the pants at ankle length; a longer hem drags through wet grass and stays soaked for the rest of the day. A packable cream windbreaker covers any extra cold. It's a cheerful choice for weekend golf that still holds up over 18 holes.
24. Red Mock-Neck And Black Pants Fall Golf Outfit

A deep red mock-neck over black pants is a confident look that needs no print. Choose a long-sleeve performance top with a soft neckline and stretch across the shoulders, tuck it into black ankle-length pants and add a black belt with plain hardware. A light gray vest softens the red-and-black contrast and keeps you warm on windy holes. Black-and-white shoes, a gray cap and a red glove or one small red accessory finish it. Don't add a second bold color. Red already holds the eye, and another one makes the outfit busy. It also stands out well in photos against green fairways and turning leaves, which is useful on golf trips and at tournaments.
25. Beige Tonal Layered Fall Golf Outfit

Tonal beige is the quietest look here, and it relies entirely on texture. Start with an ivory long-sleeve polo, layer a light taupe quarter-zip over it and add tapered sand-colored pants with front seams. Cream-and-tan waterproof shoes keep the palette going, and a camel cap and matching belt add a slightly deeper note. Mix smooth performance fabric, fine knit and light quilting so the similar shades don't blur together. One caution: pale pants show mud and grass stains fast in wet weather, so I'd save this for dry days. Carry a chocolate-brown vest or rain shell for warmth and contrast. Tonal pieces pack easily, and the look fits a public course, a resort or a club.
A Two-Minute Swing Test in the Fitting Room
Golf clothes look the same on a hanger as everyday clothes. The differences only show when you move. Before I sign off on any piece, I put it through four checks. They take a couple of minutes and catch most fit problems before they reach the course.
- A slow full backswing with your arms crossed over your chest. If the top pulls across the upper back or the hem lifts above your waistband, it's too tight or too short in the body.
- A deep crouch, as if you're reading a putt. Pants should not dig in at the knee or the back rise, and a skort or dress should still cover you.
- A bend to pick a ball out of the cup, side-on to a mirror. This is where short skirts and low necklines fail.
- Ten brisk steps. Undershorts that ride up or a vest that rides over the belt will only get worse after six miles of walking.
Skort Lengths, Collars and Club Rules
Clothing rules vary more between courses than most new golfers expect. Many private clubs still ask for a collar or a mock neck on tops, and some set a minimum length for skorts and dresses, often measured from the knee. Public courses and driving ranges are usually much more relaxed. Denim, cargo pockets and gym leggings worn on their own are the items most often turned away at stricter clubs, while tailored joggers are allowed at some and not others.
If you can't find the policy online, call the pro shop and ask. It's a routine question for them, and much less awkward than being asked to change at the first tee. When in doubt, a collared polo, tailored pants and golf shoes are accepted almost everywhere.
The Five Pieces I'd Buy First for Autumn Rounds
A good fall golf wardrobe starts with breathable basics and layers that come off without fuss. The outfits above cover mild afternoons, frosty early tee times, windy holes and surprise rain. Spend on stretch pants, a skort with undershorts that stay put, a couple of base layers, waterproof shoes and one rain shell you trust. Then bring in burgundy, camel, olive, teal or rust to keep things interesting. Before any round, take a few practice swings in the full outfit and read the club's dress code. Get those two things right and you'll stay warm and move freely all the way to the 18th green.
