Autumn mornings start cold and afternoons warm up, which is why the plain pieces in your closet matter more this season than any trend. Denim, a few soft knits, one good pair of trousers, a light jacket, ankle boots and sneakers can carry you through September to November if they all mix with each other. That's the test I apply when I clean out a client's closet: does this piece work with at least three others? The 25 outfits below are built on that idea. Each one is a simple formula you can copy, then adjust the color, shoe or fabric weight for your climate, body and workday.

Fourteen Pieces Behind All 25 Outfits
Read through the list below and you'll notice the same pieces showing up again and again. That's deliberate. These outfits are built from a short core that mixes in every direction, and you probably own most of it already. Before shopping, I'd check your closet against this list:
- Outerwear: a trench, a leather or faux leather jacket, a denim or utility jacket and a wool coat for late autumn.
- Knits: a crewneck sweater, a fine turtleneck, a cardigan and one striped sweater.
- Bottoms: straight-leg blue jeans, black jeans or trousers, and one midi skirt.
- One dress: a knit midi or sweater dress.
- Shoes: leather ankle boots, loafers and clean white sneakers.
If you're missing something, fill the gap with the piece that pairs with the most items you already own. For most people, that's a neutral trench or a pair of ankle boots. Keep the color story narrow, with two or three neutrals such as navy, camel and black plus one accent like burgundy or olive, and almost every top will work with almost every bottom.
1. Basic Autumn Trench Coat And Jeans Outfit

A trench over a white tee and straight-leg jeans is the first outfit I'd build in any autumn wardrobe, because every piece in it works with almost everything else you own. Beige or khaki is easiest. Wear it open on mild afternoons and buttoned over a thin cardigan when it cools. White sneakers keep it casual; brown loafers make it smarter. Petite women look best in a trench ending at or above the knee. Pick jeans in the rise and leg you actually like wearing, since you'll be reaching for this combination a lot.
2. Basic Autumn Striped Sweater And Wide-Leg Jeans Outfit

A cream sweater with black, navy, brown or burgundy stripes over high-rise wide-leg jeans gives a basic outfit some pattern without much thought. A small front tuck shows the waist. If the jeans are long, wear loafers with a thicker sole so the hems don't drag and fray. Stripes widen whatever they cross, so if you'd rather not add width at the bust, choose a sweater with narrower stripes or one that skims rather than clings. A light scarf handles breezy mornings.
3. Basic Autumn Crewneck Sweater And Ankle Jeans Outfit

A crewneck sweater with ankle jeans is the outfit for mornings when you have five minutes. Camel, gray, navy, oatmeal or forest green all work with most washes. With straight or slim ankle jeans and leather ankle boots, that small gap of skin between hem and boot keeps it light in early autumn. Once it's cold enough for socks, I'd let the jeans just meet the boot instead. A loose tuck or narrow belt adds shape, and a thin cotton tee underneath stops wool from itching.
4. Basic Autumn Cardigan And Relaxed Jeans Outfit

A button-front cardigan over a tank or tee with relaxed straight-leg jeans is the most adjustable outfit on this list. Button it fully, wear it open, or fasten just the middle buttons, which gives a hint of a waist. Ballet flats suit mild days; switch to ankle boots when it gets colder. If oversized cardigans swallow you, a hip-length one with slimmer sleeves keeps the outline neat. Watch for cheap acrylic cardigans, which stretch out at the button band after a few wears.
5. Basic Autumn Sweater Vest And Trousers Outfit

A V-neck sweater vest over a white, pale blue or striped button-down turns a shirt you already own into an autumn layer. Tailored straight-leg trousers in black, camel, navy or charcoal and leather loafers make it office-ready. Roll the shirt cuffs once. A thin poplin shirt layers under a vest far better than a thick oxford, which adds bulk at the armholes. A vest ending near the waistband keeps the volume down, while a longer untucked shirt under a cropped vest gives more coverage.
6. Basic Autumn Blazer And Straight-Leg Jeans Outfit

A blazer with jeans gives casual clothes a sharper edge. Over a fine-knit turtleneck, a black, navy, brown or subtle plaid blazer with clean medium or dark straight-leg jeans and leather ankle boots works almost anywhere. Skip heavy distressing. A single-breasted cut looks sleek; double-breasted gives more layering room but adds width at the front. Cuff the jeans only if the denim holds a crisp fold. If turtlenecks feel tight at the neck, a fitted crewneck is just as good.
7. Basic Autumn Denim Jacket And Black Trousers Outfit

A denim jacket doesn't need more denim. Over a fitted ribbed top with black straight or wide-leg trousers, it gives a nice mix of casual and tailored. White sneakers and a black crossbody keep it simple. The fit check for denim jackets is the shoulders: even if you wear it open, it should close across the chest without pulling, because rigid denim won't stretch. Cropped jackets suit high-rise trousers; longer ones work with mid-rise. Switch to a light turtleneck when it's colder.
8. Basic Autumn Leather Jacket And Blue Jeans Outfit

A black or dark brown leather jacket over a white tee and straight blue jeans is the outfit I'd pick if I could only keep one. Black ankle boots look sharp; brown ones soften it. Get a jacket with enough room for a sweater underneath but no extra width at the shoulders, which makes leather look heavy. New leather is stiff for the first few weeks and softens as you wear it. Faux leather is lighter and lower maintenance, though it can crack at the elbows after a few seasons.
9. Basic Autumn Utility Jacket And Leggings Outfit

An olive, tan or navy utility jacket over a sweatshirt with thick black leggings is how to look put-together on a day full of errands. The leggings must be truly opaque; I always do a bend test in good light, because thin leggings go see-through at the seat. Add clean sneakers, a roomy tote and a cap. Choose a sweatshirt or jacket that covers the hips as much as you prefer. If leggings aren't for you, slim ponte pants work the same way.
10. Basic Autumn Quilted Vest And Jeans Outfit

A quilted vest keeps your core warm and your arms free, which is just right on mild autumn days. An olive, navy, cream or black vest over a fitted long-sleeve knit with straight-leg jeans and sturdy brown ankle boots looks tidy and outdoorsy. Make sure it closes without pulling across the chest. A lightly shaped vest marks the waist; a boxier cut fits over thicker knits. Petite women look best in one ending at the hip. A plaid scarf adds pattern.
11. Basic Autumn Trench Coat And Black Trousers Outfit

A trench over a striped long-sleeve top and black tailored trousers is a polished weekday outfit that takes no time to put together. The stripes give the neutrals some life. Black or dark brown loafers and a simple leather belt finish it. Choose straight trousers for a classic line or wide ones for more movement. When it gets colder, swap the cotton top for a striped knit. Belt the trench or leave it open. If you're walking a lot, add cushioned insoles to the loafers.
12. Basic Autumn Blazer And Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

A plain tee under a relaxed blazer with wide-leg trousers makes basics look current. White, black or gray tees with a camel, charcoal, navy or brown blazer work. Minimal leather sneakers stop the tailoring looking too formal. The hem matters most here: wide trousers should nearly reach the top of the shoe without touching the ground, so hem them for the sneakers you'll wear. If a full tuck feels bulky, choose a shorter tee or tuck only the front.
13. Basic Autumn Cardigan And Satin Midi Skirt Outfit

A satin midi skirt with a cardigan is an easy step away from jeans. A cream, gray, burgundy or chocolate cardigan with a black or jewel-toned satin skirt mixes matte and shine. Button and lightly tuck it, or wear it open over a camisole. Satin clings to tights and static builds in dry autumn air, so a slip underneath helps the skirt hang and move. Choose a hem that ends where your calf narrows. Ankle boots work in mild weather; add opaque tights and a long coat when it's cold.
14. Basic Autumn Sweater And Denim Midi Skirt Outfit

A denim midi skirt adds structure to a soft sweater. A fitted crewneck or mock-neck with a straight or slightly flared skirt in dark, black or medium denim works with almost anything. Knee-high boots that slip under the hem keep you warm. Check the slit before you buy: rigid denim midis need one for walking, but it shouldn't open higher than you're comfortable with when you sit. A belt connects the sweater to the boots, and opaque tights add coverage.
15. Basic Autumn Turtleneck And Pleated Skirt Outfit

A light turtleneck with a pleated midi skirt is a comfortable, polished option for the office or a museum day. A black, cream, burgundy or forest-green knit works with a solid neutral or quiet plaid skirt. Fine pleats add little volume; wide pleats add more. The turtleneck must be thin enough to tuck without bunching, so look for fine-gauge merino or a cotton blend. Loafers suit mild weather; add opaque tights when it cools. A mock neck is a good swap if high necks feel tight.
16. Basic Autumn Knit Midi Dress And Ankle Boots Outfit

A knit midi dress is a whole outfit in one piece, which is why it's my answer for busy mornings. Black, camel, navy, olive or deep red ribbed or smooth knit with leather ankle boots needs nothing else. The fabric weight is what I check first. A thin knit clings and shows every line; one with real substance drapes. A slit at the side or back helps walking. In colder weather, add tights and a long wool coat. Knit dresses come in straight, fit-and-flare and relaxed cuts, so most body types can find one that works.
17. Basic Autumn Shirt Dress And Cardigan Outfit

A shirt dress gives structure; a cardigan over it keeps things relaxed. Navy, olive, brown, black or a small autumn print in knee or midi length works. Layer a longline or hip-length cardigan depending on your proportions. If the buttons pull across the chest, buy the size that fits the bust and have the waist taken in; a gaping button line is the most common fit issue with shirt dresses. Use the dress belt, swap in leather or leave the waist loose. Add opaque tights later in the season.
18. Basic Autumn Sweater Dress And Knee-High Boots Outfit

A sweater dress with knee-high boots is cozy and neat at the same time. Oatmeal, gray, navy, chocolate or burgundy dresses with smooth leather or suede-effect boots in black or brown all work. Fit the boots around the calf with room for a sock; a too-tight shaft is painful by afternoon. A belt adds shape, but chunky knit bunches under a narrow one, so choose a wider, softer belt. Tights or fitted shorts underneath add comfort. A light trench suits early autumn; wool for later.
19. Basic Autumn Hoodie And Long Coat Outfit

A plain hoodie under a long tailored coat is a casual outfit that still looks deliberate. Gray, cream, navy or black hoodies without big graphics pair well with thick leggings or straight knit pants and streamlined sneakers. Let the hood sit outside the coat collar so it doesn't bunch at the neck. The coat has to button comfortably over the sweatshirt, so size it with a hoodie on. The structured coat is what makes the soft base look polished. Good for travel and long walking days.
20. Basic Autumn Flannel Shirt And Black Jeans Outfit

A plaid flannel over a fitted tee with black straight-leg jeans and lace-up or Chelsea boots is classic autumn. Burgundy, navy, green, brown or rust plaid all suit black denim. Wear it buttoned, open, or tied at the waist on warm afternoons. Check the shoulder seam; it should sit at your shoulder bone, not halfway down your arm, or the shirt looks borrowed. A subtle check with closely related colors is calmer than a bold plaid. Ideal for road trips and outdoor weekends.
21. Basic Autumn Brown Monochrome Outfit

Head-to-toe brown works when the shades are slightly different. A chocolate, mocha or camel sweater with wide-leg trousers a shade lighter or darker, tan loafers or ankle boots and a cognac bag is the formula. Varied textures help, so try a soft knit with smooth trousers and polished leather. A cream tee peeking at the neckline adds contrast. If brown makes your skin look dull, wear it below the waist and put cream or muted blue on top instead.
22. Basic Autumn All-Black Outfit

All black looks severe only when every piece is the same flat fabric. A fine-knit black turtleneck, straight black jeans, smooth leather ankle boots and a black blazer or light wool coat each have a different surface, so the outfit has depth. Make sure the jeans are a true deep black; faded black next to a new black knit looks gray. If black near your face is harsh, a soft gray scarf or metallic earrings help. Pair a relaxed blazer with fitted layers, or a narrow jacket with wider jeans.
23. Basic Autumn Olive Jacket And Dark Jeans Outfit

Olive works as a neutral, and an olive field jacket over an ivory crewneck with dark straight-leg jeans is a simple, durable autumn outfit. The dark jeans keep it polished; the cream sweater brightens your face. Brown ankle boots and a matching belt finish it. Push the sleeves up on mild afternoons. Check the jacket has room across the shoulders for a sweater; field jackets cut slim look fine over a tee and strain over knitwear. Add a thin base layer and a scarf when it's colder.
24. Basic Autumn Raincoat And Waterproof Boots Outfit

A lightweight waterproof raincoat in navy, olive, tan or black over a soft sweater is the rainy-day basic. The hem of your trousers matters as much as the coat. Pants that sit just above waterproof ankle boots stay dry; full-length hems soak up puddle water and stay damp all day. Choose a hood that adjusts securely and a coat with room for layering. Thin moisture-wicking socks prevent clammy feet. Keep the colors simple, and the raincoat will look like part of your wardrobe rather than gear.
25. Basic Autumn Wool Coat And Tailored Trousers Outfit

As autumn gets colder, a wool coat takes over from the trench. Camel, gray, navy or black over a light turtleneck and tailored straight-leg trousers works for offices and busy city days. Sneakers keep it relaxed; loafers look traditional. The coat should button without pulling across the shoulders, with room for a knit. Knee-length coats give coverage without weight. Wool blends with a high wool percentage hold their shape and warmth better than mostly synthetic ones, which pill quickly. Swap in dark jeans if trousers feel formal.
Spotting a Sweater That Will Last
Basics get worn more than anything else in a closet, so they wear out first. A sweater that pills after three wears or a cardigan that sags at the hem undoes the whole idea of a reliable wardrobe. You can judge most of this in the shop.
Check the label
Natural fibers such as wool, merino, cashmere and cotton generally age better than mostly acrylic or polyester knits. A small percentage of nylon in a wool blend is fine and actually helps durability. A knit that's mostly acrylic will usually pill fast and won't keep you as warm.
Stretch the cuff
Pull the rib at the cuff or hem gently and let go. It should spring back quickly. If it stays stretched, the sweater will sag at the wrists and waist within a season.
Hold it up to the light
A tightly knitted sweater lets little light through. A loose, thin knit loses its shape and snags on bag straps. For layering pieces like turtlenecks you want fine and dense; for a chunky sweater, the stitches should feel firm rather than floppy.
Once you have good knits, look after them. Fold them instead of hanging, which stretches the shoulders. Wash wool cold and lay it flat to dry, and use a fabric shaver on any pilling at the underarms and sides, where friction from your arms and bag is worst.
Wear the Basics You Own Before Buying More
A useful autumn wardrobe is a set of outfit formulas, not a pile of seasonal purchases. Jeans, trousers, skirts, dresses, knits and a few layers of outerwear can be combined in dozens of ways if they share a color family and fit well. Start with the combinations that match your actual week, then adjust the lengths, fabrics and shoes to your body and climate. Before buying anything new, check that it will work with at least three pieces you already have. That rule alone will get you from the first cool morning to late November.
