The fall outfits I come back to are the ones where every layer earns its place and each piece works in more than one look. This season leans toward wearable layering, sharper tailoring, outerwear you'll actually use, a lot of texture and color in small doses. Denim, knitwear, loafers and boots still do most of the work. Each of the 25 outfits below can bend to your climate, your shape and how much coverage you like. Swap the fabric when the temperature changes, move a hemline, or trade a heel for a flat on a busy day. I've noted where a look tends to go wrong and what I'd change for different heights.

Where a Jacket Should End on Your Body
Almost every outfit below gives you a choice between a cropped layer and a longer one, and that choice changes your proportions more than color ever will. The rule I use with clients is simple: a jacket or cardigan should end at a point you want people to notice, never in the middle of the widest part of your hips.
- At the natural waist or the waistband: shows a high rise, lengthens the legs, and suits petite women and anyone with a defined waist.
- Just below the hip bone: the easiest length for most people and most bottoms, from jeans to midi skirts.
- Mid-thigh to knee: covers the hips and seat, works well over leggings and slim pants, and suits taller women most easily.
- Mid-calf and below: dramatic and warm, but it can overwhelm a petite frame unless the line underneath is one color.
Bottoms change the answer. Wide-leg trousers and full skirts need a shorter, closer top half, or the outfit gets heavy. Slim pants and leggings can carry a longer, looser layer. If you're curvy, a cropped jacket with high-rise bottoms usually flatters more than a mid-length one that stops right at the hip. Stand side-on to a mirror before you decide.
1. Autumn Trench Coat And Straight-Leg Jeans Outfit

A trench handles unpredictable weather better than almost any other coat. I layer beige or olive over a light striped sweater with straight blue jeans: ankle length if you want the shoes seen, full length for more coverage. Brown loafers sharpen it; white sneakers relax it. A structured crossbody, small gold earrings and a silk scarf if you like. Petite women often do better in a shorter trench, since a long one can cut the leg at an awkward spot, while taller or curvier figures can carry a longer coat with an adjustable belt. Wear it open for a long line or tie it loosely at the waist.
2. Autumn Blazer And Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

For a day that needs comfort and a professional finish, I start from the trousers. High-rise wide legs with a fitted turtleneck in cream, black or burgundy, then a slightly relaxed blazer that follows your shoulder without pulling. Leather loafers or low block-heel boots keep it practical for meetings and errands, and a structured tote holds the day. If wide trousers feel like a lot of fabric, pick one with fluid drape; a stiff wide leg adds bulk, while a soft one moves. Push the blazer sleeves up a little to take the edge off. A watch, small hoops and a narrow belt matching the shoes finish it.
3. Autumn Cardigan And Wide-Leg Jeans Outfit

This is the outfit I'd repeat all through a mild autumn. A white crewneck tee with high-rise wide-leg jeans, then a medium-weight cardigan in gray, oatmeal, forest green or red. Cropped cardigans show the waist; longer ones cover the hips, which some women prefer. Retro sneakers keep it easy. Tuck the front of the tee in and leave the cardigan open; that small move stops the wide jeans from looking shapeless. A suede or canvas tote and quiet jewelry finish it, plus a light scarf if it cools. Every layer adjusts, so it suits petite, tall, straight and curvy figures.
4. Autumn Leather Jacket And Knit Midi Skirt Outfit

Smooth leather over a soft knit skirt is a pairing I use a lot once the air turns cool. A fitted long-sleeve top or light sweater, a stretchy knit midi, and a black or chocolate leather jacket to give the soft skirt some structure. Pointed ankle boots look sharper; flat Chelsea boots are kinder on a walking day. A compact shoulder bag and a pendant are enough. For waist definition, choose a cropped jacket that ends at the skirt's waistband; a longer one is more relaxed. Knit skirts can cling, so a slip underneath helps them hang. When it's cold, add opaque tights and a fine merino turtleneck.
5. Autumn Denim Jacket And Maxi Dress Outfit

A maxi dress doesn't have to go into storage in September. I'd choose a long-sleeve version in a deeper palette, floral, solid or small print, and throw a medium-wash denim jacket over it. Brown ankle boots ground the long skirt and cover the foot on a crisp day. A crossbody with an adjustable strap and small hoops keep it daytime. A cropped jacket marks the waist; an oversized one looks more casual. If the dress is loose, a slim belt under the jacket gives a little shape. Add light tights as it gets colder. The jacket comes off in a warm afternoon and goes back on after sunset.
6. Autumn Sweater And Satin Midi Skirt Outfit

A chunky sweater against a fluid satin skirt is polished without being formal. Choose a crewneck or mock-neck in camel, charcoal, plum or soft cream and tuck it lightly into a bias-cut midi, or use a slim belt to hold a partial tuck. Bias-cut satin follows the body closely, so a heavy sweater fully stuffed into the waistband creates lumps; a front tuck is kinder. Knee-high boots keep you warm and let the skirt slide over the shaft. A top-handle bag, subtle earrings and a tailored wool coat when needed. A sweater ending at the waistband gives the most shape.
7. Autumn Utility Jacket And Cargo Pants Outfit

Pockets on pockets can get bulky, so with a utility jacket and cargo pants I keep both pieces fairly streamlined. A fitted ribbed top under an olive, tan or navy jacket, with relaxed cargos in a matching neutral. Low sneakers or sturdy lace-up boots for a long day on your feet. A belt bag or crossbody keeps your hands free, and a cap helps on a breezy afternoon. Petite women usually look better in a tapered cargo, which cuts the volume at the ankle; tall or curvy figures can carry a straight or wide cut. A light scarf when the forecast turns.
8. Autumn Barn Jacket And Relaxed Jeans Outfit

A barn jacket with a corduroy collar brings practicality to plain jeans. Layer it over a soft crewneck or a button-down, with relaxed straight jeans in medium or dark wash long enough to meet the top of your boots. Brown leather ankle boots, a roomy tote and a plaid scarf tie it together without tipping into costume. A shorter jacket shows more leg; hip length gives protection on a windy walk. A shirt collar showing at the neck is a small detail that frames the face. Barn jackets are cut boxy, so I check that the shoulders don't hang past your own before buying.
9. Autumn Camel Coat And Monochrome Knit Outfit

A long camel coat over a one-color knit base looks put together with almost no effort. Start with a fitted sweater in beige, ivory, chocolate or black and match it with knit pants or tailored trousers in the same shade. That column of color creates a long, clean line; the camel coat adds a gentle contrast. Sleek ankle boots and a bag that matches the boots finish it. Change textures, fine knit against wool, leather and suede, or the neutrals look flat. Knee-length coats suit petite women; taller women can wear full length. Keep jewelry minimal here.
10. Autumn Burgundy Sweater And Dark Jeans Outfit

Burgundy turns ordinary jeans into a fall outfit straight away. A softly fitted crewneck, V-neck or mock-neck with dark straight jeans, then black or deep brown chunky boots, which carry the depth of the color better than a slim shoe. A charcoal wool coat over it when it's cold, a black shoulder bag and small earrings. Tuck the front for a waist, or wear it loose for coverage. Strong burgundy can make some complexions look sallow; if that's you, choose a softer berry or put a cream scarf between the sweater and your face. It's casual enough for weekends, smart enough for an informal office.
11. Autumn Suede Jacket And Cream Trousers Outfit

Cream trousers with suede feel lighter than an all-dark fall palette. A brown, tobacco or olive suede jacket over an ivory knit, with high-rise cream trousers in a straight or gently wide leg. Burgundy ankle boots or brown loafers, and a leather belt to bridge the light trousers and dark accessories. A tote in chocolate, oxblood or tan. Suede is already textured, so keep everything else smooth. Cropped jackets show the waist; a longer shirt-jacket covers more. Cream trousers mark easily and suede hates rain, so on wet days I'd switch to a suede-effect jacket and darker trousers.
12. Autumn Shirt Dress And Knee-High Boots Outfit

A shirt dress is a whole outfit in one piece, with room for fall layers. A midi in denim, cotton twill, corduroy or another substantial woven fabric holds its shape far better than thin cotton. Cinch it with its own belt or a slim leather one. Knee-high boots cover the leg below the hem, and a cropped wool jacket adds warmth without hiding the dress. A medium structured bag and simple earrings. If you prefer a looser fit, let the waist blouse softly instead of pulling the belt tight. A straight cut can also be worn open over a fitted top and pants. Opaque tights for colder days.
13. Autumn Sweater Dress And Trench Coat Outfit

A ribbed sweater dress under a long trench is one of my favorite cold-morning outfits. The dress should fall to the knee or mid-calf, with a little showing below the coat. Knee-high leather boots make a smooth line and keep your legs warm. A structured shoulder bag, small earrings and a belt if you want a waist. I look for a dress with some ease, because a tight rib clings and shows every seam. Vertical ribs and an open neckline lengthen the figure, and a side slit helps you walk. When it's cold, switch to thermal tights and a lined wool coat.
14. Autumn Plaid Blazer And Black Jeans Outfit

A plaid blazer makes black jeans look ready for work, lunch or a museum. Layer it over a white tee, fitted black turtleneck or light knit, and keep the jeans straight and clean, without heavy distressing. Loafers give a classic finish; pointed ankle boots take over when it's cold. A structured crossbody and slim belt in the same color as your shoes tie it together. If the plaid is bold, keep the accessories quiet. A longer blazer covers the hips; a shorter one shows the waist and lengthens the legs. Rolled sleeves show the inner layer and make it less stiff.
15. Autumn Sweater Vest And Tailored Trousers Outfit

A sweater vest over a shirt suits days that start cold and finish mild, because you can unbutton the collar and push up the cuffs as it warms. Wear a fine button-down under a V-neck vest with straight or softly pleated tailored trousers. Oxfords or polished loafers fit the preppy feel and are comfortable for walking. A satchel and a watch or small hoops. Watch the armholes: a vest that's tight there bunches the shirt sleeve. Petite women can choose a cropped vest; longer frames suit full-length trousers. A trench or wool blazer finishes it.
16. Autumn Bomber Jacket And Satin Skirt Outfit

A bomber over a satin skirt gives a dressy fabric a casual edge for daytime. Start with a fitted crewneck tee or thin sweater, add a midi skirt with soft movement, then a cropped leather, nylon or wool bomber. Clean sneakers keep it relaxed; ankle boots sharpen it. One noticeable accessory is enough, such as sculptural earrings or a printed scarf. For a waist, choose a bomber whose ribbed hem lands at the skirt's waistband, since a longer one bunches over the hips. A longer skirt balances the jacket's volume. Add tights and a fitted turtleneck when it turns colder.
17. Autumn Shacket And Leggings Outfit

Leggings outfits look finished when the top layer covers the hip. A longline plaid or solid shacket over a sweatshirt or fine sweater does exactly that, with thick, opaque leggings that have a supportive waistband. I'd do a quick bend test in the mirror, because thin leggings go see-through when stretched. Chelsea boots or streamlined sneakers finish it, with a crossbody and a cap. Keep the inner layer close to the body so the shacket hangs smoothly. A moderate sole looks more balanced than a very chunky one. If the shacket is patterned, choose a solid scarf.
18. Autumn Corduroy Jacket And Straight Jeans Outfit

A corduroy jacket gives plain jeans instant depth. I'd pick rust, olive, navy or camel and layer it over a light cream turtleneck, with straight jeans in dark or medium wash. Brown Chelsea boots suit the palette, and a leather crossbody keeps it practical. Cord already has strong texture, so skip extra patterns. A cropped trucker cut shows the waist; hip length is more relaxed and covers more. Cuff the jeans slightly to show the boots. For cold days, slip a quilted vest under the jacket or a thin thermal under the turtleneck; the outline barely changes.
19. Autumn Knit Polo And A-Line Skirt Outfit

A knit polo has the comfort of a sweater and the neatness of a collar. Tuck it into an A-line midi in wool, denim, corduroy or structured cotton. Leather mules work in early autumn; knee-high boots later. A top-handle bag and understated earrings. The A-line shape skims the hips rather than clinging, which is why it suits so many body types. A full tuck of a thick polo can bulge at the waist, so try a cropped polo or a small front tuck instead. Open neck for a relaxed effect, buttoned higher for coverage. A tailored blazer or short trench layers on easily.
20. Autumn Hoodie And Long Wool Coat Outfit

A hoodie can leave the house looking smart, as long as the shape is clean and the coat is good. A plain gray, navy, cream or black hoodie under a long wool coat, with thick leggings or tapered knit pants and streamlined sneakers. Keep logos small so the coat is what people notice. A structured tote and simple sunglasses smarten the casual base; a crossbody suits travel. The hoodie should fit under the coat without bunching at the shoulders, so I go a size smaller than a lounging hoodie. Straight joggers or stretch trousers work if leggings aren't you. Matching hoodie and pants gives a longer line.
21. Autumn Denim Shirt And Brown Trousers Outfit

Blue denim and brown is one of the warmest color pairings I know, and it needs no heavy layers. Tuck a medium-wash denim shirt into chocolate, camel or taupe tailored trousers, then add brown loafers, a matching belt and a structured shoulder bag. Open one or two buttons and roll the cuffs so it doesn't look corporate. Denim shirts are thick, so if a full tuck adds bulk, do a soft front tuck or choose a shorter shirt. Wide legs move more; straight legs look sleeker. A fitted tank underneath lets you wear the shirt open later, and a camel coat goes on when needed.
22. Autumn Oversized Sweater And Faux Leather Pants Outfit

Faux leather pants give a big, soft sweater the structure it needs. Pick a knit in cream, gray, camel or muted green, with straight or gently tapered black or brown faux leather. Pointed ankle boots lengthen the leg; flat Chelsea boots make it casual. A structured handbag and simple metal jewelry. The sweater should be relaxed but not hide you completely, so a front tuck or side slits help. Faux leather has little give and can feel hot, so if fitted pairs feel restrictive, a wide-leg or pull-on style is much easier. Any coat over it should be clean-lined, or the whole thing gets bulky.
23. Autumn Fine-Knit Sweater And Pleated Skirt Outfit

Pleats move well on a breezy autumn day, and that's the reason I like this skirt so much. Pair a pleated midi with a fine-knit sweater in a coordinated neutral or rich shade. Ballet flats or loafers for warm days; ankle boots and tights later in the season. A narrow belt if the waistband allows, and a small shoulder bag. Small pleats drape softly; wide pleats look more architectural. Tucking shows the waist, but a cropped knit does the same with less fabric. Finish with a short jacket or slim coat. A long, bulky top hides the pleats, which defeats the point of wearing them.
24. Autumn Matching Knit Set And Long Coat Outfit

A matching knit set is about the fastest way to get dressed and still look like you thought about it. Choose a sweater and wide-leg knit pants in charcoal, oatmeal, navy, chocolate or deep green, then layer a long tailored coat on top for structure. Minimal leather sneakers for travel; low ankle boots for something sharper. A large tote and simple pendant. I always check the knit weight: heavier knit skims, thin knit clings and shows lines. Pants length matters too, since knit hems that drag stretch and fray. If you can't find an exact set, mixing tonal shades gives a similar effect.
25. Autumn Rain Jacket And Straight Jeans Outfit

Rain calls for protection, though what's underneath can still look tidy. A water-resistant jacket over a striped or solid crewneck sweater, dark straight jeans, and waterproof ankle boots with a decent tread. A nylon crossbody protects your things better than suede or untreated leather. Look for an adjustable hood, zipped pockets and enough room for a sweater. Cuff the jeans only if the cuff will stay clear of puddles; otherwise go for an ankle-length pair, because a long hem wicks water up the leg. A colorful scarf brightens a gray day, and a compact umbrella goes in the bag.
Tights, Boot Shafts and Midi Hems
Eight of these outfits involve a skirt or dress, and the most common question I get once it's cold is what to do with the legs. The gap between hem and boot is where an outfit either looks planned or awkward.
With knee-high boots, I like the hem to overlap the top of the boot or sit a few inches below the knee, so very little leg shows. A narrow strip of bare skin between a midi hem and a boot top tends to look accidental. With ankle boots, opaque tights in the same color as the boot make one long line, which is the most forgiving option for every height. Sheer tights look dressier but run easily and offer little warmth.
Matching the tights to the weather
- Mild days: sheer or 40-denier tights, or bare legs with loafers.
- Cool days: opaque tights in a denier around 60 to 80, matched to the boots.
- Cold days: fleece-lined or thermal tights under knee-high boots; nobody will see the lining.
Check boot shafts against the skirt fabric too. Satin and fine knits catch on rough suede and zips, so a smooth leather shaft or a boot with a covered zip treats them better.
Repeat the Formulas, Not the Outfits
Getting dressed in the fall is much simpler when you work from repeatable formulas instead of single trend pieces. Coats, jackets, knitwear, denim, trousers, skirts, dresses, loafers and boots cover most occasions between them. Get proportion, comfort and sensible layers right first, then add seasonal color or texture. Every look above changes with a different shoe, a moved waistline or a fabric suited to your weather. Above all, wear what fits your actual life and lets you move. Rotate the formulas, change one piece at a time, and the season stays interesting without constant shopping.
