Thanksgiving is a strange dress code. You want to look like you made an effort, but you'll also be lifting a hot roasting pan, sitting for hours and maybe sprawling on a sofa afterward. When I help people plan what to wear to a holiday meal, I ask three questions first: how warm is the house, how long will you sit, and will anyone take photos? The outfits below answer those. Sweater dresses, wide-leg trousers, stretchy denim, knit sets and soft skirts, all with layers that come off in a hot kitchen and go back on for the cold drive home. There are relaxed options for a family meal and dressier ones for a restaurant or the in-laws.

A Hot Kitchen, a Long Table and a Cold Drive Home
Thanksgiving packs three climates into one day. The car or the walk in is cold, the kitchen with the oven running for hours is hot, and the dining room is crowded. I plan every holiday outfit so it can handle all three.
- A breathable base. A cotton or fine wool layer next to the skin stays comfortable in a warm room. Heavy acrylic sweaters get sticky fast.
- A layer that comes off without ruining the look. A cardigan, blazer or vest, with something underneath that looks finished on its own.
- A coat that goes over everything. Check that your coat closes over the bulkiest piece you'll wear, especially a chunky sweater or a poncho.
If You're the One Cooking
Wide, floaty sleeves near a gas burner are a real hazard, and long drapey cardigans can catch on oven doors. While you cook, push sleeves up or choose a fitted top, and put the flowing layer on when you sit down. An apron over satin or a pale knit saves the outfit from splatter. Flat or low shoes are kinder after hours of standing.
1. Warm Thanksgiving Sweater Dress Outfit

A sweater dress is the outfit I suggest most for Thanksgiving, since it's one piece and has no waistband to fight after dinner. Pick a ribbed or cable-knit midi in burgundy or forest green with a relaxed cut, and bring a belt you can take off once the pie comes out. Knee-high boots with a low block heel and opaque tights handle the cold walk in. Length depends on height: on petite women a knee-length dress looks better, while taller women can carry a longer midi. Keep the neckline simple; a cowl or big collar ends up in the gravy. Gold hoops, a shoulder bag and a camel coat for outside.
2. Thanksgiving Cable Knit Sweater And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

Cable knit and wide-leg trousers sit right between jeans and a dress. An oatmeal or rust sweater over high-rise wide legs in brown or dark grey. The waistband is where I'd spend the effort. Look for stretch, a partly elastic back or a smooth pull-on style; a rigid waistband feels very different at hour four. Tuck just the front of the sweater. If the knit is chunky, choose fluid trousers rather than heavy pleats, or you'll have bulk on bulk at the hip. Loafers, pointed flats or low ankle boots, a slim belt, a small pendant and a tailored coat.
3. Thanksgiving Turtleneck And Satin Midi Skirt Outfit

A turtleneck with a satin midi skirt gives you a little shine for the occasion and feels like a sweater. Cream or cocoa turtleneck, satin skirt in bronze or espresso. Choose an elastic waist; satin skirts with a zip and no give are uncomfortable at the table. Satin also marks easily, so I keep a napkin firmly on my lap and skip it if I'm on gravy duty. Suede ankle boots feel warmer than delicate heels. Opaque tights on very cold days, a cropped wool jacket or long coat over the top, and small earrings. It photographs well and fits a restaurant meal as easily as a dinner at home.
4. Thanksgiving Cardigan And Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

For a casual Thanksgiving where you still want to look dressed, a button-front cardigan with dark straight-leg jeans is my answer. Wear the cardigan buttoned as a top, or open over a fitted tee so you can adjust as the oven warms the house. Burgundy or warm brown looks seasonal without turning into a costume; I'd avoid anything with a pumpkin or turkey on it unless the family is into that. Jeans with a bit of stretch and a mid or high rise. A cardigan that ends at the waistband looks more current than one past the hips. Sleek ankle boots, a leather belt, a small crossbody and a scarf for the drive.
5. Thanksgiving Matching Knit Set And Sneakers Outfit

Knit sets look much more put together in photos than loungewear while feeling almost the same. A ribbed sweater with matching wide or straight pants in camel or charcoal. Oversized is fine, but the shoulder seams should sit close to your own shoulders, or the whole set looks slept in. Check that the pants are a substantial knit and the waistband lies flat under the sweater. Clean leather sneakers make sense if you're hosting or chasing children. Wear a fitted tank underneath so you can take the sweater off if the dining room gets hot. Small gold hoops, a tote and a long neutral coat.
6. Thanksgiving Plaid Shacket And Leggings Outfit

For a cabin Thanksgiving or a potluck with a walk afterward, a long plaid shacket is my choice. Brown, rust or forest green plaid in two or three muted colors, over a fitted black turtleneck or thermal, with thick high-waisted black leggings. The shacket should cover your hips, which matters in leggings when you're bending over a table of side dishes. Wool socks and lug-sole Chelsea boots for the cold walk. A crossbody keeps your hands free to carry food in. Indoors, wear it open or hang it up.
7. Thanksgiving Mock Neck Sweater And Corduroy Pants Outfit

Corduroy has a slightly nostalgic warmth that suits a traditional family dinner. Try camel cords with a cream mock-neck sweater, or olive cords with oatmeal. A flat front with hidden elastic at the back looks neat and stays comfortable. Corduroy flattens at the knees and seat if it's pressed hard, so I iron it inside out over a towel when it needs it. Brown loafers with socks or low block-heel boots, a slim belt if you tuck, a watch and studs. Since both pieces already have texture, skip chunky statement jewelry.
8. Thanksgiving Knit Skirt And Fitted Sweater Outfit

A knit midi skirt is as comfortable as lounge pants and looks far more like an outfit. Choose a softly draped or ribbed skirt with an elastic waist and a fitted crewneck sweater. Tonal pairings like camel with caramel make you look taller; a rust skirt with an ivory sweater gives more contrast. Tall boots under the hem keep your legs warm and the line unbroken. Knit skirts can cling to tights, so a slip helps. Only add a belt if it doesn't press after the meal. A cropped cardigan or wool coat, delicate jewelry and a top-handle bag.
9. Thanksgiving Flannel Shirt And Puffer Vest Outfit

If your family's Thanksgiving includes a football game in the yard or a long walk, wear something built for it. A brushed flannel shirt in burgundy or navy plaid, a lightweight quilted vest with room through the shoulders, straight-leg jeans and waterproof lace-up boots for damp leaves. Roll the shirt cuffs out over the vest edge. A knit beanie outside, and take the vest off when you come into a warm kitchen. Keep everything else solid so the plaid is the only pattern. It looks coordinated in photos and you can still throw a ball.
10. Thanksgiving Blazer And Turtleneck Trousers Outfit

A blazer turns a turtleneck and trousers into a proper dinner outfit, and it's the look I recommend for a restaurant Thanksgiving or a dressier family table. Plaid or brown herringbone over a fine-knit black or cream turtleneck, with relaxed tailored trousers that have pleats or a flexible waistband. Choose an unlined or softly constructed blazer. Stiff, fully lined jackets get hot fast in a full room. Loafers for an androgynous finish, or pointed ankle boots with a stable heel. Push the sleeves up if it's warm. A leather watch, small hoops and a structured handbag are plenty.
11. Thanksgiving Poncho And Dark Jeans Outfit

Old houses and drafty dining rooms are where a knit poncho shines. Wear a camel or burgundy one over a fitted long-sleeve top so the layers don't stack up, with dark slim jeans tucked into knee-high riding boots. Straight jeans with ankle boots work if you prefer a looser leg. Ponchos and serving dishes don't always get along: the wide sides drape over plates when you reach across a table, so I push it back over one shoulder while helping. A defined neckline or small fringe gives enough detail without a scarf. Keep the crossbody under the poncho and the earrings simple.
12. Thanksgiving Denim Dress And Turtleneck Outfit

A denim dress layered over a turtleneck is casual, warm and suits almost every age at the table. Choose a dark-wash midi shirt dress, or a sleeveless one with room for a thin base layer, and an ivory or rust turtleneck underneath. Tie the waist or add a medium leather belt, loose enough for dinner. Knee-high boots and opaque tights in a similar dark tone make one continuous line. Denim is stiff in the seat when you've been sitting a while, so a dress with a little stretch is worth it. A cropped cardigan indoors, a wool coat outside, minimal gold jewelry and a small saddle bag.
13. Thanksgiving Jumpsuit And Long Cardigan Outfit

A jumpsuit is one piece, so it's quick, but it has one honest drawback at a long dinner: the bathroom. Before choosing one, check it unfastens easily. With that settled, a wide-leg jumpsuit in espresso or olive with a flexible waist and room through the torso looks modern and uncomplicated. Under a sleeveless style, add a fitted long-sleeve tee or turtleneck for warmth. A long open cardigan comes off easily for cooking. Loafers, low ankle boots or clean sneakers depending on the dress code, a pendant to lengthen the neckline and a slim belt if you want shape.
14. Thanksgiving Faux Leather Pants And Oversized Sweater Outfit

Faux leather pants give an oversized sweater a sleek edge. Straight or relaxed pants in black or chocolate, ideally with stretch and a soft backing so they don't feel clammy. Add a roomy cream or heather grey sweater and tuck the front to show your waist. If the pants are shiny, keep the sweater and accessories matte; shine on shine looks costume-y. Faux leather can feel warm in a crowded room, so a breathable knit on top helps. Cushioned ankle boots or loafers rather than high heels, especially if you'll stand in the kitchen. A small structured bag and simple gold jewelry.
15. Thanksgiving Maxi Dress And Cropped Cardigan Outfit

A long-sleeve maxi dress works for Thanksgiving if you pick the print and the waist carefully. Small florals or paisley in brown, rust or olive look seasonal; large bright prints look like summer. A smocked panel or adjustable tie is much kinder after a big meal than a fixed band. Put a cropped cardigan over the top to mark the waist so the dress doesn't swallow you. Suede ankle boots or tall boots and opaque tights keep you warm. Small hoops, a cognac crossbody, and a long plain coat for travel that won't compete with the print. It photographs gracefully without looking too formal.
16. Thanksgiving Sweater Vest And Button Down Outfit

Preppy layering is ideal when a heavy sweater would be too hot but a shirt alone looks bare. A crisp white or pale blue button-down with a cable-knit sweater vest in camel or forest green, collar and cuffs showing. Relaxed straight jeans for a casual table, dark tailored pants for a dressier one. A shirt with side slits looks fine untucked; otherwise tuck it loosely into high-rise pants. The vest leaves your arms free and cool while cooking, which I appreciate in a busy kitchen. Loafers with thin socks or ankle boots, a structured bag and small pearl or gold earrings.
17. Thanksgiving Long Cardigan And Fleece Lined Leggings Outfit

When comfort is the only priority, especially for hosting or a long car journey, fleece-lined leggings and a long cardigan are hard to beat. Start with a tunic-length top or thin turtleneck, add thick matte leggings with a wide waistband, then a cardigan to mid-thigh or the knee. The cardigan needs some weight. A thin, stretched-out one makes the whole outfit look like pajamas. Belt it for shape or leave it open. Tall flat boots or lug-sole ankle boots with matching socks, a pendant to draw the eye up and a compact tote. You'll be fine on the sofa afterward.
18. Thanksgiving Wrap Dress And Wool Coat Outfit

For a more formal Thanksgiving dinner, I like a wrap dress, because the tie adjusts as the evening goes on. A long-sleeve midi in deep green or navy, in soft jersey or knit, which moves and keeps you warmer than a stiff woven fabric. Tie it firmly but not tightly. Wrap necklines open when you sit and lean, so a small hidden snap or a camisole underneath is worth adding. Opaque tights, pointed ankle boots with a stable heel, and a camel or charcoal wool coat. A small clutch, delicate earrings and one bracelet. It fits a wide range of figures because both the waist and neckline adjust.
19. Thanksgiving Monochrome Brown Outfit

Head-to-toe brown looks rich and seasonal with no pilgrim hats or turkey prints required. Start with an espresso turtleneck, add chocolate wide-leg trousers or a ribbed knit skirt, then a camel coat or long cardigan over the darker base for contrast. Mix the textures, knit, wool, suede and smooth leather, so the outfit has depth. Cognac boots and a bag in a related shade are fine; browns don't need to match exactly. Browns come warm and cool, so hold a few up to your face in daylight and keep whichever makes your skin look clearer. If it feels too dark, add a cream scarf near the face.
20. Thanksgiving Tunic Sweater And Bootcut Jeans Outfit

A tunic sweater with bootcut jeans is familiar and flattering on most figures. The sweater should end below the hip but well above mid-thigh; too long, and your legs look short. Side slits, a curved hem or a soft cowl add movement. Dark bootcut jeans with some stretch, and heeled ankle boots so the flare falls cleanly over the foot. I check the jean length with the boots on; the hem should almost touch the floor at the back. Burgundy or olive for seasonal color. A long pendant, small earrings, a structured tote and a quilted coat or wool wrap for outside.
Reading the Host's Table Before You Get Dressed
The same outfit can look perfect at one Thanksgiving and slightly off at another. Before I suggest anything, I find out what kind of meal it is.
- A relaxed family meal at home: knit sets, flannel, leggings with a long cardigan, cardigans with jeans. Sneakers are fine.
- Dinner with in-laws or a more traditional table: a sweater dress, wrap dress, corduroy trousers or a sweater vest with a crisp shirt. Swap sneakers for loafers or ankle boots.
- A restaurant: a blazer with tailored trousers, a satin skirt, or a jumpsuit. Restaurants can be cooler than a home kitchen, so the coat matters more.
- A cabin or outdoor gathering: shackets, puffer vests and waterproof boots. Bring indoor shoes if the host keeps a no-shoes house.
If you can't tell, aim for the middle: something a step smarter than jeans and a sweatshirt, plus a layer you can remove. It's easier to dress down by taking off a blazer than to dress up a hoodie.
Dress for the Second Helping, Not Just the Photo
Whatever the setting, the outfit that works best at Thanksgiving is the one you forget you're wearing. Start with a shape you already like, a sweater dress, wide-leg trousers, stretchy jeans or a knit skirt. Then add a layer you can take off when the kitchen heats up and put back on for the drive home. Browns, burgundy, olive, rust and cream make nearly any combination feel right for the season. Before you leave, sit down in it for a minute. Anything that pinches, slips or needs constant adjusting will bother you far more by dessert than it does in the mirror.
