Early September is awkward to dress for. The calendar says fall, the shops say knitwear, and the afternoon still says summer. I treat it as a bridge month: keep the light summer fabrics, change the colors and the shoes, and carry one layer for the morning and the air-conditioning. That's the approach behind every outfit here, from cotton tanks with wide trousers to slip dresses with a denim jacket and tailored shorts under a linen blazer. You'll get an autumn look without sweating through a sweater at two o'clock, and most of these work for the office, a weekend or a travel day.

Summer Pieces Worth Keeping Out Until October
When I build a September capsule, most of it comes straight out of the summer closet. The trick is knowing which pieces translate and which ones only work at the beach.
- Keep: midi dresses in solid or dark-ground prints, slip skirts, linen trousers, fitted tanks, cotton shirts and tailored shorts that reach toward the knee.
- Put away: very short shorts, bright tropical prints, neon colors and anything in terry cloth. These read as vacation no matter what you layer over them.
- Bring out early: loafers, ballet flats, a denim or utility jacket and one fine cardigan. These small additions shift the look more than any new top would.
For a trip, this means a September bag can be almost the same as an August one. Swap the sandals for loafers, add one jacket and pack a couple of rust or olive pieces. You get a fall look without carrying extra weight.
1. White Tank And Wide Leg Trousers September Outfit

This is the outfit I pack for a September city trip more than any other. A fitted white tank and high-rise wide-leg trousers in camel or chocolate. The fitted top is what makes the wide leg look intentional; a loose tank with loose trousers just looks like pajamas. Trouser fabric matters too. Look for a light crepe or cotton-linen blend, not wool. Loafers, flat sandals or low sneakers depending on how far you'll walk, a structured shoulder bag and gold jewelry. A thin cardigan in the bag covers air-conditioned offices and the cooler evening.
2. Linen Blazer And Tailored Shorts September Outfit

Shorts still have a place in a hot September if you dress them up. I'd choose beige or navy tailored shorts with a longer inseam, a lightweight tank and an unlined linen-blend blazer. Unlined is the key word. A lined blazer traps heat against your back, while unlined linen breathes and still gives the outfit its shape. Loafers, slingback flats or minimal leather sandals, plus a belt and a structured bag to pull the separates together. Roll the sleeves in the afternoon and wear them down in the evening. It suits a creative office, brunch or errands.
3. Slip Dress And Denim Jacket September Outfit

A slip dress is the easiest summer piece to carry into September, as long as the color shifts. Black, rust or olive midi, or a print on a dark ground. Add a relaxed denim jacket you can wear in the morning, drape over your shoulders at lunch and carry in the afternoon. White sneakers keep it casual; loafers or a low block heel dress it up. If the straps feel too thin for daytime, wear a fitted short-sleeve tee underneath. It's a nineties trick and it also stops the dress clinging when you walk. A leather crossbody, simple earrings and sunglasses.
4. Striped Shirt And Straight Leg Jeans September Outfit

Striped cotton shirts are the most useful thing in a travel capsule, and September is when they earn their place. Choose a breathable shirt in blue and white or brown and cream, loosely tucked into straight-leg jeans, medium or dark wash. Leave several buttons open over a simple tank, so you can close it in the morning chill and open it later. When it's warmer still, wear it fully open as a light jacket. Ballet flats, slim sneakers or loafers for walking, a medium tote and a watch. Cuff the sleeves twice, just below the elbow.
5. Knit Polo And Midi Skirt September Outfit

White jeans don't need to go away on Labor Day. What changes is everything around them. A fitted black or brown tee, a lightweight olive utility jacket and tan loafers or brown flats pull white denim into autumn. Straight or relaxed cuts move more comfortably than skinny ones and show fewer creases at the knee. A woven leather belt and a matching crossbody add texture. Check the jeans in daylight before you leave: thin white denim can show pockets and seams through it, so a thicker weave is worth looking for. Wear the jacket open, or push the sleeves up when it's warm.
6. Utility Jacket And White Jeans September Outfit

A cotton shirt dress is close to the perfect September item: breathable, covered, and done in one step. Choose a midi in khaki, navy or a quiet stripe. Belt it with the matching fabric belt or a slim leather one, or wear it loose. Loafers give it the fall mood, flat sandals still work in hotter climates. Roll the sleeves when the afternoon heats up and throw a light sweater over your shoulders for the evening. Shirt dresses are also easy to fit across sizes because the belt adjusts the shape. A structured tote and small hoops finish it for work or appointments.
7. Shirt Dress And Loafers September Outfit

A graphic tee tucked into a satin midi skirt is my favorite way to look dressed up without feeling formal. Keep the graphic small and simple, and choose the skirt in a fall shade like bronze, olive or burgundy. A tee that's too thick bunches at the waistband under satin, so a thin cotton tee works best. Roll the sleeves once for shape. Retro sneakers for daytime, pointed flats for later. A denim jacket or cropped cardigan comes off when it warms up, and a small shoulder bag with a fine chain necklace keeps the focus on the contrast.
8. Graphic Tee And Satin Skirt September Outfit

A tailored vest gives you the polish of a suit with your arms free in the heat. Wear it buttoned on its own as a top, or over a fitted white tank if you want more coverage. Taupe, grey or chocolate with relaxed trousers in a lightweight woven fabric, not wool. Watch the length. A long vest needs high-rise trousers, or it cuts your torso at the widest point of the hip. Sleek sandals, loafers or low slingbacks, a structured bag and sculptural earrings. I recommend it for presentations and gallery visits when a jacket would be too hot.
9. Sleeveless Vest And Relaxed Trousers September Outfit

A denim midi skirt covers more than shorts and feels cooler than jeans on a sunny day. A fitted tank or short-sleeve tee on top, then a thin cardigan in rust or forest green, buttoned, open or tied around your shoulders. Look for a front slit. Denim doesn't stretch much, and without a slit a midi shortens your stride. Loafers, ballet flats or low sneakers. Add a leather belt and a small crossbody. Adjust the skirt length to your height; on petite women, a midi that hits mid-calf is better than one that reaches the ankle.
10. Denim Skirt And Lightweight Cardigan September Outfit

Bermuda shorts are my pick when September still feels like July. Tailored black or khaki shorts that end near the knee, a fitted tank and an oversized cotton button-down worn open or half-buttoned with a front tuck. Neutral colors are what make shorts read as city clothes rather than beach clothes. Keep the tank close to the body, since the oversized shirt and wide shorts already add volume. Loafers dress it up, simple sneakers dress it down. A structured tote, slim belt and sunglasses for warm city days, travel and long outdoor lunches.
11. Oversized Button Down And Bermuda Shorts September Outfit

If you own one black midi dress, you already have a September outfit. Swap the summer accessories for brown ones: a cognac belt, brown loafers or flat sandals and a matching leather bag. Brown against black softens it and reads as autumn with no extra layers. Gold jewelry and tortoiseshell sunglasses warm it up more. The fabric should still be light, cotton, jersey or a linen blend with short sleeves or wide straps. Carry a cropped denim jacket for the evening. For travel, this is the dress that goes from errands to dinner with nothing more than a shoe change.
12. Black Midi Dress And Brown Accessories September Outfit

A cropped trench gives jeans a structured layer without the weight or length of a full coat. Wear it over a fitted tank or white tee with high-rise straight-leg jeans; because the jacket ends near the waist, a high rise shows off the line and a low rise leaves a gap. Beige or navy goes with both medium and dark denim. Open during the warm hours, buttoned when the evening cools. Cotton gabardine is the fabric to look for; it shrugs off a passing shower. Loafers, ballet flats or slim sneakers, a leather shoulder bag and a simple belt.
13. Cropped Trench And Jeans September Outfit

Crochet keeps you cool because air moves straight through it, which is exactly why it needs a plan for coverage. Choose a close weave and wear a camisole underneath in the same color, so the holes read as texture rather than skin. Dark straight or wide-leg jeans move it out of beachwear. Cream crochet with indigo denim looks polished; rust or olive feels more autumnal. Clogs, leather sandals or loafers. Keep the rest of the accessories smooth, a plain shoulder bag and simple metal jewelry, because a woven top plus a woven bag plus raffia shoes is too much texture.
14. Crochet Top And Dark Denim September Outfit

A matching linen set is the easiest thing to pack for a warm trip and wear on the first day back. Shirt with trousers or tailored shorts in olive, tobacco or navy. Wear the shirt partly buttoned over a fitted tank so it doubles as a removable layer. Flat sandals keep it summery; loafers or closed-toe mules make it read as fall. One color top to bottom makes a long, unbroken line, which suits most heights. Linen creases, there's no way around it. If that bothers you, a linen blend with some cotton or viscose wrinkles noticeably less. Add a structured tote and minimal jewelry.
15. Matching Linen Set September Outfit

A short-sleeve sweater looks like fall and wears like a tee. Choose a fine knit in cotton or viscose, burgundy or navy, rather than wool, which gets hot fast with the sleeves cut short. Pair it with ankle-length trousers in black or olive; the cropped length shows a bit of ankle and keeps the outfit light. Full tuck or a small front tuck, a slim belt if the trousers have loops, loafers, pointed flats or a low block heel and a structured bag. For an office, it looks professional by itself and slips under a light blazer when the air-conditioning gets cold.
16. Short Sleeve Sweater And Ankle Pants September Outfit

Floral dresses carry into September when the print has a dark background or small accents of rust, burgundy or brown. Pastels on white still look like June, whatever you put over them. Add a lightweight suede-look jacket in camel or chocolate, cropped or softly fitted so it doesn't hide the dress. Ballet flats, ankle boots or leather sneakers, depending on the temperature. Keep jewelry minimal so the print leads, and carry a structured crossbody. Take the jacket off in the afternoon and the dress still looks finished. Good for family gatherings and daytime celebrations.
17. Floral Midi Dress And Suede Jacket September Outfit

Head-to-toe beige looks expensive when the shades vary slightly and the textures differ. Start with a cream tank or sleeveless knit, add sand-colored trousers or a flowing midi skirt, then a light beige shirt or blazer on top. If every piece is exactly the same tone, the outfit goes flat, and under bright sun pale neutrals can look washed out. Bring texture in through woven leather, linen, fine knit or suede-look accessories. Tan loafers or cream slingbacks continue the line. I'd only do this in washable fabrics; pale colors show every coffee drip, especially when traveling.
18. Monochrome Beige September Outfit

A light barn jacket over a cotton midi dress feels made for a September weekend outside the city. An olive or tan jacket, a plain black, striped or denim-blue dress that breathes and moves. The jacket brings pockets, structure and just enough cover for a cool morning. Most barn jackets are cut boxy, so I keep the dress straight or slightly fitted underneath; a full skirt under a boxy jacket looks heavy. Loafers, ankle boots or clean sneakers, and a canvas-and-leather tote. Push the sleeves up when it warms, or carry it over your arm at the farmers market.
19. Barn Jacket And Cotton Dress September Outfit

Leather in warm weather works only when everything else is light. A cropped, thin, unlined jacket over a fitted tank and a flowing slip skirt in champagne or black. A lined leather jacket in September sun is genuinely uncomfortable, so I wear it open and take it off during the warmest hours. Faux leather breathes even less than real, so make sure it's thin. Low sneakers for a casual version, pointed flats or a low heel for dinner. A compact shoulder bag and simple jewelry. It's most useful in the evening, at a concert or a late dinner, once the temperature drops after sunset.
20. Leather Jacket And Slip Skirt September Outfit

A leather or faux-leather jacket can work in warm September weather when the remaining pieces are lightweight. Layer a cropped jacket over a fitted tank and a flowing slip skirt in champagne, olive, burgundy, or black. Wear the jacket open and remove it during the warmest hours. A slim silhouette keeps the look balanced without adding unnecessary bulk. Finish with low-profile sneakers for a casual approach, or choose pointed flats and low heels for a polished result. Add a compact shoulder bag and simple jewelry rather than heavy accessories. If traditional leather feels too warm, select a thin, unlined design. This complete outfit is useful for dinner, concerts, city outings, and evening gatherings when temperatures become more comfortable after sunset.
Linen, Cotton and Viscose on a Hot September Afternoon
Color is what makes these outfits look autumnal. Fabric is what makes them comfortable. On a warm September day, I check the label on anything that touches the skin.
- Linen is the coolest fabric you can wear and wrinkles the most. Linen blends crease less and still breathe.
- Cotton poplin and chambray are crisp, breathable and easy to wash, which makes them the backbone of a travel bag.
- Viscose drapes softly and feels cool, but it can shrink if washed hot, so I wash it cold and dry it flat.
- Polyester satin looks like silk but traps heat. Real silk or a viscose satin is far kinder on a hot afternoon.
Air-Conditioning Is the Other Climate
In September, the cold is often indoors. Offices, trains and cinemas run their cooling hard, and a sleeveless outfit that's perfect outside feels freezing at a desk. That's why nearly every look above has a light layer that folds small. A fine cardigan or a cotton shirt rolls into a tote and covers you for the hours inside.
Keep the Summer Base and Change the Shoes
You don't need to rebuild your wardrobe for September. Keep the breathable dresses, tanks, skirts and light trousers you already wear, and change three things: deeper colors, closed-toe shoes like loafers and flats, and one removable layer such as a denim jacket, thin cardigan, cotton shirt or linen blazer. The test I use for every outfit is simple. Take the top layer off; does what's left still look finished? If yes, you're ready for a cool morning, a hot afternoon and everything in between.
