Late August through early October is the hardest stretch of the year to dress for. You leave the house in a cool morning, sweat through the afternoon, then sit in an over-air-conditioned office or a breezy patio at night. In my work, the answer is almost never new clothes. It's taking the summer pieces you already wear and changing a few things around them: a boot instead of a sandal, a blazer over the tank, a sweater with the shorts, a darker color in the mix. Straight-leg denim, light jackets, matching sets and slip dresses all carry over well. The twenty outfits below show how I'd restyle each one, with what to swap first.

Swapping Three Things to Push a Summer Outfit Into Fall
When a client asks me to make a summer outfit feel like fall, I rarely change the main piece. I change three things around it, in this order, and stop as soon as it looks right.
- Shoes. This does the most with the least effort. Sandals and espadrilles say July; loafers, ankle boots and closed sneakers say September, even with the same dress.
- Color. Add one deeper shade. Burgundy, olive, chocolate, rust or navy next to a summer piece changes the whole mood.
- Texture. Add one heavier or richer surface: suede, leather, a fine knit, corduroy, a tweedy blazer. Linen, cotton voile and straw are the textures to start retiring.
Only after those three do I think about a layer for warmth. If it's still hot out, the layer can be carried, but the shoes, color and texture already make the outfit read as fall.
1. Summer To Fall Slip Dress Outfit

A slip dress is one of the summer pieces I'd never pack away in September. A midi length in black, olive, rust, chocolate or a small floral carries over best. Throw an oversized white button-down over it, open on a warm afternoon, and swap the sandals for ankle boots or loafers. That one shoe change does most of the seasonal work. Thin slip dresses show every line under a knit, so if you layer a cardigan or blazer on cooler days, choose a smooth one rather than a chunky cable. A simple pendant is enough jewelry. The fluid dress against a crisp layer is what makes it look considered.
2. Summer To Fall Tank Top And Jeans Outfit

A fitted tank with straight jeans is the base I come back to whenever a day starts cold and gets hot. Dark or mid-wash denim feels more autumnal than light-wash without adding weight. Over the tank, a relaxed linen or cotton blazer you can take off by lunch. I'd skip a wool blazer at this point in the year; it's too hot to wear and too bulky to carry. A slim belt and a tote big enough to hold the blazer make it practical. Loafers, ballet flats or white sneakers all work. Adjust the jean rise and blazer length to your own proportions, since those two set how the whole outfit balances.
3. Summer To Fall Floral Midi Dress Outfit

Florals don't have to disappear with the heat. The ones that carry into fall have darker backgrounds or muted, earthy flowers; a bright white-ground floral still reads as July no matter what you put with it. A cropped denim jacket gives coverage without hiding the waist of the dress. Suede ankle boots bring in texture, but suede and late-summer rain don't mix, so treat them with a protector spray first. On hot days, carry the jacket and keep your sandals. Later on, tall boots and a light scarf take the same dress well into October.
4. Summer To Fall Linen Pants Outfit

Linen pants can stay in your rotation into early fall if the pieces around them get a bit more structured. Cream, tan, olive or black wide-leg linen with a fitted ribbed top, or a short-sleeve sweater for a more seasonal look. Linen wrinkles, and that's part of its charm, but if you want it neater for the office, a linen-cotton or linen-viscose blend creases far less. Leather loafers or minimal sneakers, a slim belt, and a cognac or dark brown bag warm up the colors. Keep the hem just off the floor in the shoes you'll wear. A light trench or cotton cardigan covers a chilly morning.
5. Summer To Fall Denim Shorts Outfit

Denim shorts work in the first weeks of fall when the top half starts doing the seasonal work. Relaxed mid-thigh shorts with a clean or lightly frayed hem, plus a striped long-sleeve tee or a light crewneck sweater in cream, navy, burgundy or forest green. Swap sandals for loafers, retro sneakers or ankle boots. A sweater over shorts can look boxy, so I'd do a small front tuck to show the waistband, and choose a sweater that ends at the hip rather than below it. A utility jacket covers a windy morning. In warm-climate regions, this one can stretch well into October.
6. Summer To Fall White Jeans Outfit

White jeans after Labor Day are fine; what makes them look like summer is what you pair them with. Straight, wide or cropped white denim with a burgundy, chocolate, navy or olive knit, and a suede-look jacket or relaxed blazer on top. A cognac belt and bag tie the light jeans into the darker colors. I'd leave the straw tote and espadrilles for next year and use leather, suede or canvas instead. White denim shows through to whatever's underneath, so nude-to-you underwear matters, and heavier-weight white jeans hide pockets and seams much better than thin stretch ones.
7. Summer To Fall Maxi Skirt Outfit

A maxi skirt is airy in the heat and covers your legs once the evenings cool, which makes it ideal for this month. Satin, cotton or a soft pleat in black, bronze, olive or a quiet print. With a voluminous skirt, keep the top lean: a fitted tee or sleeveless knit tucked in, then a denim jacket or cropped cardigan that ends at the waist. A long jacket over a long skirt hides your shape completely. Low sneakers make it casual, pointed flats or ankle boots make it polished. Check the hem length with your actual shoes, since a maxi that drags on the pavement frays fast.
8. Summer To Fall Button-Down Shirt Outfit

An oversized button-down might be the most useful single piece for switching seasons. White, pale blue, striped or olive over a fitted tank or bodysuit, with straight jeans and loafers. Open on a warm afternoon, buttoned with sleeves down when the temperature drops. A half-tuck at the front gives shape. The length of the shirt is what decides whether this works on you: on petite frames, a shirt that hits mid-thigh cuts the leg short, so I'd go for one that ends at the hip. Taller women can let a longer hem hang. A leather belt and a structured tote finish it.
9. Summer To Fall T-Shirt And Blazer Outfit

A plain tee becomes office-ready under a lightweight blazer, and it's the formula I'd hand anyone who doesn't know where to start. White tee, mid-wash jeans or ankle trousers, and a blazer in camel, navy, olive, gray or a subtle check. While afternoons stay warm, look for cotton or linen-blend tailoring; it breathes, and a fully lined polyester blazer does not. Push the sleeves up to show a little wrist. Loafers, ballet flats or sneakers all work. For dinner, change the shoes to a low heel and add a bolder earring. That's the whole change.
10. Summer To Fall Matching Set Outfit

A matching set gives you one outfit and several halves, which is why I like them more than almost anything for in-between weather. Knit, cotton or linen-blend, with a sleeveless top and relaxed pants or a midi skirt. Taupe, cream, charcoal or dark olive restyle easily into fall. Leather slides on hot days, loafers or sneakers when it cools. Layer a denim jacket, blazer or light trench over it. Then split it up: the top under a cardigan with jeans, the pants with a striped tee. Knit sets can stretch at the seat after a long day of sitting, so look for a firmer, denser knit.
11. Summer To Fall Mini Dress And Boots Outfit

A mini dress with boots gets the most out of the last really warm weeks. A relaxed shirt dress, a simple A-line or a long-sleeve printed mini, with Western, Chelsea or knee-high boots in brown or black. Boots bring the weight that makes a short hem look seasonal instead of beachy. Bike shorts underneath help on windy days and when you sit a lot. A light denim jacket or blazer covers the arms. Bare legs are fine early on. Later, sheer tights and thicker socks under the boots keep the dress going, and new boots need a few short wears before a full day on them.
12. Summer To Fall Cargo Pants Outfit

Cotton cargo pants are an easy swap for jeans when you can't predict the weather, because they're lighter and dry quicker after a shower. Olive, tan, black or stone, with a fitted tank or ribbed short-sleeve top to balance the roomy shape. An open striped shirt, cropped jacket or light cardigan goes on top. Keep the waist defined, or the pockets and fabric take over. Petite women usually do better with a tapered or cropped pair; tall women can wear a full-length wide leg. Retro sneakers or loafers, and streamlined accessories, keep it from tipping into hiking gear.
13. Summer To Fall Satin Skirt Outfit

A satin skirt with a plain tee or light sweater is one of my favorite contrasts for this time of year, because it makes casual pieces look intentional. Midi length in black, bronze, navy, chocolate or deep green works hardest, though a pale skirt with dark separates is lovely too. Loafers, ballet flats or low ankle boots, depending on the temperature. A cropped denim jacket keeps it relaxed; a blazer takes it to the office. Satin shows sweat and water marks, so on a humid day I'd pick a darker shade. If the skirt clings to your legs, a smooth half-slip underneath stops the static.
14. Summer To Fall Bermuda Shorts Outfit

Tailored Bermuda shorts give you more coverage than cutoffs while still feeling cool on a warm September afternoon. Black, camel, navy or pinstripe with a fitted tank and an oversized blazer, then loafers, slingback flats or minimal sneakers. The hem placement matters most with Bermudas: just above the knee is usually the most flattering, and a hem that lands mid-knee can make legs look shorter on petite frames. A slim belt defines the waist. For a casual version, denim Bermudas with a striped sweater and sneakers. Either way, choose a light blazer you can carry when it warms up.
15. Summer To Fall Jumpsuit Outfit

A sleeveless jumpsuit is a dress's ease with the practicality of pants. Utility, wide-leg or softly tailored in black, olive, navy, rust or khaki. Put a fitted tee underneath when it cools, or a cropped jacket on top; a long jacket hides the waist, which is the jumpsuit's best feature. Before buying, sit down in it. If the torso is short for you, it pulls uncomfortably every time you bend. Belt it with the included tie or a leather belt for contrast. Roll the cuffs once if wide legs look heavy with flat shoes. A crossbody keeps your hands free.
16. Summer To Fall Graphic Tee Outfit

A vintage-style graphic tee looks sharp when everything else is tailored. Tuck it into high-rise trousers in camel, charcoal, olive or black and add an oversized blazer. Keep the graphic simple; a busy print plus a blazer is a lot to look at. Loafers or pointed flats keep it polished, retro sneakers relax it. Tees with a heavier cotton tuck more smoothly than thin ones, which bunch at the waistband. A slim belt and small hoops pull it together. For weekends, switch to straight jeans and wear the blazer open. It's a good fit for a creative office.
17. Summer To Fall Shirt Dress Outfit

A cotton shirt dress breathes in late-summer heat and layers easily once fall settles in. Midi length in blue, olive, tan, black or a stripe, belted with its own tie or a leather belt. Add loafers, ankle boots or sneakers. A light cardigan draped over the shoulders adds warmth without hiding the dress, and a cropped jacket covers a colder morning. Shirt dresses can gape at the bust between buttons, so size by your bust and take in the waist with the belt, or add a small safety pin inside. Roll the sleeves and open the collar during warm hours.
18. Summer To Fall Sweater Vest Outfit

A sweater vest brings knit texture into an outfit without the heat of sleeves, which makes it ideal for September. Cream, camel, burgundy or gray over a white tee or crisp button-down, with straight jeans, tailored pants or a midi skirt. Keep the vest slightly relaxed but not bulky at the shoulders, and match its length to your bottom: short with high-rise, longer with slim or straight pants. Loafers and a tote lean classic; sneakers make it casual. On a hot afternoon, wear the vest alone if the armholes aren't too deep. Many vests are cut with low armholes, so check before you skip the shirt.
19. Summer To Fall Trench Coat Outfit

A light trench handles cool mornings, a drizzle, and a breeze in the evening, which is why it's on every transitional list I make. Over a fitted tank and straight jeans, open with sleeves pushed up while it's warm; buttoned with the belt tied loosely at the back when it isn't. Beige is the classic, but olive, navy, black and soft gray are just as easy to wear. In a mild climate, an unlined cotton-blend trench is the right weight. Loafers, ballet flats or low sneakers and a leather tote. The long open line of the coat flatters without needing anything tight underneath.
20. Summer To Fall Cardigan And Skirt Outfit

A fitted cardigan with a midi skirt is the softest outfit on the list. Pair it with a cotton, denim, pleated or printed skirt, and leave one or two top buttons open. Cream with olive, burgundy with beige, chocolate with a muted floral all work. Loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots move it away from high summer. A thin cardigan worn alone as a top works on warm afternoons; when it cools, add a tank underneath. Tucked into a high-rise skirt, the cardigan defines the waist. Fine-gauge cotton or merino cardigans hold their shape better than loose acrylic knits, which stretch and pill quickly.
Sweaty Afternoons and Freezing Offices on the Same Day
This is the real problem of transitional dressing. The answer is in the fabric close to your skin and in a layer that's easy to carry.
- Next to the skin, stay with breathable fibers: cotton, linen, or a fine merino. Polyester tanks and satin tops trap sweat on a humid commute and then feel cold once you're in the air conditioning.
- Your carry layer should fold small. A thin cardigan or an unlined blazer goes into a tote; a chunky sweater doesn't.
- If your office runs cold, keep a cardigan at your desk instead of carrying one both ways.
- Long sleeves you can push up beat short sleeves you can't pull down.
Sorting the Summer Closet Into Keep, Pause and Pack Away
In early September, I go through summer clothes in three piles. Keep: anything in a darker or neutral color, anything midi or long, and anything that layers under a jacket, like slip dresses, tanks, linen pants, button-downs and white jeans. Pause: short shorts, very bright prints and strappy sandals; leave them at the back for warm days. Pack away: the most obviously beachy things like straw bags, crochet tops and sheer cover-ups. Wash everything before storing it, because sweat and sunscreen marks yellow over the winter and are much harder to remove by spring.
A Closet That Bridges Two Seasons Already Exists
Getting through this in-between stretch is less about shopping and more about recombining what's already hanging in your closet. Keep summer dresses, skirts, tanks, linen pants and shorts within reach, and bring in the light jackets, blazers, cardigans, boots and loafers alongside them. Every layer should come off easily. Darker colors and richer textures give an autumn mood even when it's still warm out. Adjust each formula to your climate and how you actually spend your day. A few versatile shoes, one good light jacket and a coordinated palette will cover more of September and October than a whole new wardrobe would.
