November is a generous month for maternity portraits: low, warm light, leaves on the ground, and an excuse to wear knits and velvet. It's also cold, and pregnancy makes you feel temperature differently, so I style these sessions with comfort built in from the start. The clothes still have one main job, which is to show the shape of the bump clearly. Long-sleeve dresses with stretch, fitted knits, flowing gowns and coats worn open all do that, in shades like burgundy, forest green, rust, camel and chocolate. Solid colors and quiet textures keep attention on you. Sturdy boots and one layer you can drop between frames make an outdoor shoot far easier. Here are 20 outfits, from gowns to denim to a coordinated family palette.

Ordering a Dress for a Bump That Is Still Growing
Maternity sessions are often booked somewhere around 28 to 36 weeks, when the bump is clearly visible but you're still comfortable standing and walking. The catch is that you'll usually buy the outfit several weeks before that, and your shape can change noticeably in the meantime.
- Favor stretch and adjustable shapes: wrap dresses, side-ruched gowns, rib knits and empire waists all have room built in.
- If you're between sizes, size for the bump you'll have on the day, not the one you have now. A tailor can take in a shoulder easily; nobody can add fabric over the belly.
- Do a full try-on about a week before, with the shoes and underwear you'll wear. Check the side profile in a mirror and sit down at least once.
- Pick a bra that disappears under the neckline. Visible straps in an off-shoulder gown are the most common thing I fix on the day.
November light is also short. Golden hour comes in mid to late afternoon in much of the country, so if you're shooting outdoors, plan hair, makeup and getting dressed early enough that you aren't rushing into fading light.
1. Cream Sweater Dress Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

A fitted ribbed sweater dress in cream is the outfit I'd suggest to anyone who wants soft and simple. Rib knit stretches over the bump and springs back between poses, which is why it outlines the belly so cleanly in side profile. Pick a midi or maxi with long sleeves and a mock or crew neck, then add taupe suede knee-high boots, small gold earrings and a camel coat worn open. A neutral knit scarf can go on between frames. Cream reads clearly against red leaves, dark evergreens and weathered wood. Loose waves or a low bun keep the focus soft.
2. Burgundy Velvet Maxi Dress Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Burgundy velvet has a depth on camera that flat jersey can't match, because the pile catches the light differently as you move. Look for a floor-length dress with long sleeves, a fitted bodice and real stretch through the belly. A wrap or V-neck lengthens the neck and frames the face. Velvet runs warm, which is welcome on a cold evening, but it also shows crush marks, so hang it in a steamy bathroom the night before. Keep shoes hidden under the hem and jewelry small. A partner in a cream sweater and charcoal trousers sits nicely beside it without matching.
3. Rust Wrap Dress and Wool Shawl Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Rust gives you the color of fallen leaves without the harshness of true orange. A long-sleeve wrap maxi dress ties under the bust and adjusts as your shape changes week to week, which makes it one of the safest buys if your shoot is still a month away. Choose matte jersey or a lightly textured knit; shiny, thin fabric clings unevenly and shows every seam of your underwear. Brown leather ankle boots, a cream wool shawl and brass or gold jewelry finish it. Wear the shawl for the close, cozy frames, then drop it for clear side profiles. Skip any extra pattern.
4. Forest Green Fitted Gown Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Forest green stands out cleanly against golden grass, copper leaves and pale studio paper. I'd look for a fitted floor-length maternity gown in stretch jersey, crepe or rib knit, with long sleeves and a modest scoop neck. Side ruching is worth seeking out: it gives the fabric somewhere to go as the bump grows and smooths over the lower belly. Choose nude pointed flats or low brown boots depending on the ground. A camel coat draped on the shoulders keeps you warm between frames. A smooth low ponytail or side-swept waves keeps the face clear.
5. Ivory Knit Set and Camel Coat Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

An ivory knit set is a modern answer if you don't love maternity dresses. A fitted long-sleeve top with a matching high-waisted midi skirt, worn over or under the bump depending on comfort, gives one long line in photos because there's no color break at the waist. Add an open camel coat, beige ankle boots, gold earrings and a tan structured bag for a few lifestyle frames. Taking the coat off gives you a second look with no outfit change. Stick to fine or medium knits; a chunky set adds width everywhere and hides the very shape you're photographing.
6. Black Turtleneck and Wide-Leg Trousers Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

For anyone who'd rather not wear a dress, a fitted black maternity turtleneck with high-waisted wide-leg trousers in camel, taupe or soft gray is a strong choice. The black top acts like a silhouette against a lighter background, which is why side-facing poses show the bump so clearly in this outfit. Tuck the top smoothly and only add a narrow belt if it sits comfortably above the belly. Pointed flats, small earrings and a long tailored coat worn open keep it clean. Choose trousers with a soft drape so they move when you walk.
7. Jeans White Button-Down and Chunky Cardigan Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Denim photographs relaxed and real, which suits an at-home or informal session. Maternity jeans in a medium or dark wash go with a fitted white tank or bodysuit, an oversized white button-down left open around the bump, and a chunky oatmeal cardigan. Roll the sleeves of both so the layers don't look heavy. The fitted base layer is the key: without it, the open shirt hangs straight down from the bust and the bump disappears. Wear white sneakers or tan boots. You can get several looks from this one outfit by removing the cardigan or buttoning the shirt above the belly.
8. Plaid Midi Dress and Knee-High Boots Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

If you want a pattern, plaid is the one I trust most for November, as long as it's small in scale. A large, high-contrast check distorts over the curve of the bump and pulls the eye away from your face. Look for cream, brown, burgundy or muted green, an empire waist and a softly flared skirt. Brown suede knee-high boots, stud earrings and a solid camel scarf finish it. A cropped wool jacket should end above the widest part of the belly. Farmhouses, wooden fences, tree-lined paths and dried grass all suit it.
9. Chocolate Brown Satin Maxi Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Chocolate satin looks rich, but it's the fabric I'm most careful with. Highly reflective satin bounces light unevenly and shows every pull line across the belly, so I look for a matte or softly lustrous finish that photographs more evenly. A long-sleeve maxi with a wrap front or well-placed ruching keeps the bump defined. Add nude flats, small crystal earrings and a cream faux-fur wrap for a few frames. Ask your photographer to catch the skirt in motion as well as close side profiles. A low bun and neutral makeup keep it refined.
10. Floral Long-Sleeve Maxi Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Florals can work in November, but only with an autumn palette: small botanical prints in burgundy, olive, beige, rust or dusty blue on a neutral ground. An empire waist, wrap neckline and flowing skirt highlight the bump and let you move. Tan ankle boots and simple gold earrings are enough; a slim belt above the belly is optional. I keep a solid oatmeal cardigan on hand for warmth between frames and for a second look. Pair it with plain accessories only, since a patterned bag or scarf next to a print turns muddy on camera.
11. Oatmeal Ribbed Dress and Tall Boots Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

An oatmeal ribbed dress gives you texture without pattern, and the vertical ribs lengthen the body. Pick long sleeves, plenty of stretch and a hem below the knee, with a square, scoop or mock neck depending on which jewelry you like. Beige or cognac knee-high boots give stability on uneven ground, which matters more as your balance shifts late in pregnancy. Add a long pendant and a soft brown coat worn open. A wide-brim felt hat is fun for a few frames, but take it off for close-ups because the brim shades your eyes.
12. Navy Jumpsuit and Structured Blazer Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

A maternity jumpsuit is a sleek option if you prefer trousers. Look for navy with an empire seam, tapered or wide legs, and a stretch panel, then layer a cream or light gray structured blazer worn open. Keep the blazer just past the hips so the proportions balance. Before the session, sit down, stand up and crouch in it. Jumpsuits that fit standing can pull tight across the bump when you sit, which is exactly when the photographer will ask for seated poses. Low nude block heels or pointed flats, silver earrings and a clutch finish the look.
13. Terracotta Tulle Gown and Cape Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Tulle is the most dramatic choice here, and terracotta echoes the leaves without being literal. Look for a gown with a fitted stretch lining, a defined waist and a layered skirt falling from under the bust; sheer long sleeves soften the arms. The lining matters most, because unlined tulle over a bump looks shapeless from the side. Tulle also catches on brambles and dry stalks, so I keep it for paths and open fields rather than undergrowth. Hold one side of the skirt or let the photographer arrange it. A light cream cape for the cold, hidden flats, and a loose updo.
14. Cream Blouse and Suede Midi Skirt Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

A cream blouse with a suede-look midi skirt in rust, camel or chocolate gives a soft, feminine outfit without a full gown. Choose a fitted maternity blouse with long sleeves, a modest V-neck and light gathering over the bump, and a stretch skirt that sits comfortably above the belly. Taupe ankle boots and gold hoops complete it. A cropped cardigan adds warmth without hiding the waist. Before you leave the house, sit and twist in the blouse. Some untuck and bunch the moment you move, and that shows in every seated frame.
15. Gray Knit Dress and Long Wool Coat Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

An all-gray outfit can look calm and modern, provided the grays are clearly different. A light gray knit midi under a charcoal wool coat works; two similar mid-grays merge into one flat block on camera. Leave the coat open to frame the bump, or hold the lapels for walking shots. Black knee-high boots, silver earrings and a small black bag give it a city feel against stone buildings, minimalist walls or bare November trees. A berry lip is the one spot of color I'd add.
16. Denim Overalls and Fitted Turtleneck Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Maternity overalls are playful and very comfortable. Wear a medium-wash pair over a fitted cream, rust or striped turtleneck, cuff the hems neatly, and add white sneakers or flat brown boots. An oatmeal or camel cardigan over the shoulders handles the cold, and a knit beanie works for a few outdoor frames. Because the bib covers the front of the bump, I have clients rest their hands at the sides of it, which outlines the shape that the denim would otherwise flatten. This is a lifestyle outfit for home, a farm or a park, not a formal studio.
17. Deep Plum Off-Shoulder Gown Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Deep plum is a jewel tone that's softer than black and warmer on most skin tones. An off-shoulder gown with long sleeves, a fitted bodice and a flowing skirt in stretch jersey or crepe keeps the line smooth. The neckline needs some planning in November: bare shoulders get cold quickly, and goosebumps show in close-ups, so bring a gray or cream wool wrap and wear it until the camera is up. Hidden nude flats, pearl drops and a swept-back style suit the open neck. Pale fields, evergreens and light gray backdrops all set it off.
18. Sage Maxi Dress and Brown Cardigan Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

Sage looks fresh against November's brown and copper, which is why it reads so clearly in fall photos. Pick a long-sleeve fitted maxi or an empire-waist style with a flowing skirt, and add an open chocolate cardigan, tan ankle boots and small gold earrings. A thin belt above the bump is optional. The cardigan should add texture without swallowing you; if it hangs past mid-thigh and is very chunky, it hides your shape from every angle. Take it off for side profiles and wear it for seated and candid frames.
19. White Shirt and Black Leggings Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

A white shirt over a fitted black tank and matte black maternity leggings makes a simple, intimate lifestyle outfit. The black base holds the outline of the bump and the open white shirt frames it. Choose matte leggings, since shiny ones reflect light in patches and look like swimwear on camera. Fasten just the top few buttons or leave it open, roll the sleeves, and steam the shirt the night before. Black boots or white sneakers work, or go barefoot for nursery and bedroom frames. A gray blanket scarf adds texture.
20. Cream Brown and Burgundy Family Maternity Photoshoot Outfit

For family maternity photos, I build one palette and spread it across everyone instead of dressing people alike. Here the mother wears a fitted burgundy maxi with tan boots and gold jewelry; a partner wears a cream sweater with brown trousers and dark leather shoes; children wear oatmeal knits, brown bottoms or a small touch of burgundy. The burgundy should appear on two or three people at most, or the group starts to look like a uniform. No large logos or competing prints. Bring camel coats for between frames, and keep everyone in layers they can sit and walk in.
Keeping Warm Between Frames When You're Pregnant
A cold model looks tense on camera, and in late pregnancy a chill can make you uncomfortable fast. Most of the clothes above are worn without a coat for the actual frames, so the warmth has to come from what happens between them.
What I pack for an outdoor November session
- A long, oversized coat or a fleece robe to throw on the moment the photographer lowers the camera.
- Thin thermal leggings or bike shorts under long gowns; nobody will see them.
- Warm socks and flat boots for walking to the spot, with the photo shoes carried in a bag.
- Water and a snack. Standing outside for an hour while pregnant is more tiring than people expect.
- Hand warmers for your pockets, so your hands don't look red and stiff in close-ups.
If you have more than one outfit, plan where you'll change. A car with the heater on is fine for a quick swap, but a two-piece look or a dress you can step into is much easier than a fitted gown with a back zip. Choose a location with a short, even walk from the car, and tell your photographer if you need breaks to sit.
Start With the Bump, Then the Weather
Pick your outfit by thinking about comfort, location and how cold it will be, in that order. Fitted knit dresses, jewel-tone gowns, a tailored jumpsuit or relaxed denim can all show the bump well, and burgundy, forest green, camel, rust, cream and chocolate sit naturally in late-fall surroundings. Plan the whole outfit, including shoes you can stand in on uneven ground, simple jewelry and one outer layer you can drop between frames. Most of all, wear something that looks like you on a good day rather than a costume. Those are the photos your family will keep going back to.
