Cooler weather is when men's clothes start to look their best. Knits, softer tailoring, tougher outerwear and proper boots all come back at once, and they combine more easily than summer pieces ever do. Right now the trend is toward wearable layers, straight or relaxed trousers, a bit of workwear and a bit of college, in deeper seasonal colors. You don't need much to follow it. A couple of jackets, two or three sweaters, decent trousers and one good pair of boots will cover work, weekends and travel. Below are twenty outfits I'd put together from casual to smart, with notes on adjusting each for your build and your climate.

Eleven Pieces Behind All Twenty Outfits
If you look across this list, the same few garments keep coming back. I'd treat them as a short shopping list and check off what you already own before buying anything.
- Two jackets: one casual (overshirt, chore or field jacket) and one smarter (trench, peacoat or wool coat).
- Three tops: a heavyweight tee, an Oxford shirt and a fine merino crewneck or turtleneck.
- Two knits: a medium-weight sweater or cardigan and a quarter-zip.
- Two trousers: dark straight jeans and gray or taupe wool trousers.
- Two shoes: brown suede chukkas or boots and clean leather sneakers.
That combination alone covers more than half the outfits below. Once you have it, add pieces one at a time and only if they make several new combinations. A rugby shirt or a pair of cords pays off quickly; a statement leather jacket is worth it only if you'll wear it twice a week.
1. Autumn Overshirt Outfit With Jeans

Start here if you're building from scratch. An olive or brown overshirt worn open over a heavyweight white or cream tee, with dark straight jeans, brown suede chukkas, a leather belt and a field watch. Heavyweight matters: a thin tee wrinkles and clings under a structured overshirt, while a thicker one holds its shape. The overshirt should follow your shoulder line. On shorter men I look for one that ends around the upper hip; taller men can carry a longer cut. A charcoal, rust or navy scarf handles colder mornings.
2. Autumn Bomber Jacket Outfit With Chinos

Dark brown bomber, light gray crewneck, beige chinos, white leather sneakers. Mixing a light middle with a dark jacket keeps it from feeling heavy. Suede or matte cotton both work. The jacket's ribbed hem should land at the top of the trousers, which makes your legs look longer. On broad-shouldered men I skip padded bombers, because they add width you don't need; slimmer builds benefit from a little structure. When it turns cold, a fine merino replaces the crewneck and dark brown boots replace the sneakers.
3. Autumn Flannel Shirt Outfit With Black Jeans

Black jeans change the whole mood of a flannel. Faded blue denim with plaid looks like a weekend at the cabin; black straight-leg jeans make it sharper and let the pattern lead. I'd pick burgundy, forest green or navy plaid over a black or off-white tee. Black leather sneakers or lace-up boots depending on the weather. The hem shouldn't fall much past the hip, or it starts to look like a nightshirt when worn open. Roll the sleeves neatly in the afternoon and carry a canvas backpack.
4. Autumn Trench Coat Outfit With Trousers

The trench is the most useful coat in this list for rain. A stone, camel or dark navy trench over a black mock-neck and charcoal tailored trousers, with black loafers or sleek Chelsea boots. I check that the coat falls near the knee and that the shoulders have room for the knit; trenches cut for summer shirts often pull across the back over a sweater. Straight or gently tapered trousers balance the coat's length better than skinny ones. Worn open on a mild day, it frames the outfit with two long lines down the front.
5. Autumn Denim Jacket Outfit With Corduroy Pants

Denim on top, corduroy below. Two textures, nothing complicated. A medium-wash denim jacket over a heather gray sweatshirt or oatmeal crewneck, with straight cords in rust, olive, chocolate or tan. White sneakers keep it easy; suede desert boots make it more autumnal. I deliberately keep the jacket and trousers apart in color, since a blue jacket with blue-gray cords looks like a near miss. A slightly cropped denim jacket sits nicely on mid-rise trousers. Finish with a beanie and a canvas tote.
6. Autumn Leather Jacket Outfit With Dark Denim

For leather, I stick to three shapes: café racer, flight jacket or a stripped-back biker in black or deep brown. They repeat well because there's little hardware to date them. Over a fitted charcoal tee or thin merino, with dark indigo straight jeans. Black boots with a black jacket, brown boots with a brown one. When I fit a leather jacket, I raise both arms: if the hem rides up past the belt, the jacket's too short in the body for you. Leather softens with wear, so it should feel close but not tight across the chest on day one.
7. Autumn Quarter-Zip Outfit With Tailored Pants

A quarter-zip over an Oxford is how I dress a man who wants to look neat without wearing a blazer. Navy, charcoal, burgundy or forest green over white or pale blue, with pleated gray trousers and dark brown loafers. The collar is the detail most people get wrong. Tuck the collar points inside the zip opening, rather than spreading them over the knit, and it looks deliberate. The trousers can taper gently. For a weekend version, swap the shirt for a plain tee and the loafers for suede sneakers or chukkas.
8. Autumn Rugby Shirt Outfit With Khaki Pants

Rugby shirts are heavier than they look, which is why they work as an autumn top on their own. I look for thick cotton with wide stripes in navy, cream, burgundy or dark green, and a sturdy collar that stays up. Straight khakis or relaxed stone chinos calm the stripes down. Brown suede sneakers, retro trainers or moc-toe boots all fit. The hem should end around mid-fly when untucked. Add a navy field jacket or a waxed cotton coat if it's cold, and keep everything else plain.
9. Autumn Chore Jacket Outfit With Work Pants

A chore jacket earns its place through pockets and tough cotton canvas. Navy, tobacco or faded olive over a striped long-sleeve or a textured henley, with relaxed work pants in ecru, brown or charcoal and sturdy leather boots. Cuff the pants once at most. Roll them high and the lower leg looks chopped off. Larger men usually look better in a jacket with a clean, flat front, while slimmer men can use patch pockets to add a bit of depth. A canvas cap and a utility crossbody keep it workwear without tipping into costume.
10. Autumn Cardigan Outfit With Pleated Trousers

A cardigan looks grown-up when the trousers are sharp. Oatmeal, chocolate, navy or moss green in a medium weight, over a white tee or a fine mock-neck, with pleated charcoal or taupe trousers cut straight. Dark brown loafers, suede derbies or leather sneakers depending on where you're going. I usually button just the middle button or two; fully buttoned looks stiff, and fully open can flap. Tucking the tee defines the waist under the knit. A belt, a fine chain and a rectangular watch are plenty.
11. Autumn Puffer Vest Outfit With Cargo Pants

A thin puffer vest is the most practical piece for early fall weekends. Matte black, navy or olive over a heavyweight hoodie or a long-sleeve thermal, with relaxed cargo pants in charcoal, khaki or dark green and trail sneakers or hiking boots. For town I choose a low-profile vest; heavy padding makes the chest look boxy. The hoodie should show just below the vest's hem, a couple of inches at most, or the layers look like they belong to different outfits. A beanie and a small backpack and you're ready for a long day outdoors.
12. Autumn Peacoat Outfit With Gray Trousers

A navy peacoat works with almost anything you put under it. A cream cable knit for the weekend, a smooth charcoal turtleneck for something sharper, with medium-gray wool trousers. Dark brown lace-ups soften it; polished black boots sharpen it. I button it up in the fitting room every time. Gaps between the buttons mean it's too tight for a winter sweater. A hip-length peacoat suits shorter men because it shows more leg. A scarf picking up navy, gray and burgundy and leather gloves finish it.
13. Autumn Hoodie Outfit With Wool Coat

Hoodie under a wool coat is now normal dress for city commutes, and it can look sharp. The hoodie has to be clean and logo-free, in light gray, cream or muted green, and made from substantial cotton. Thin hoodies collapse and the hood bunches against the coat's collar. Charcoal, camel or navy wool over it, with straight black jeans or relaxed wool-blend trousers. Leather sneakers for casual, Chelsea boots for the office. I lay the hood flat over the coat collar before heading out, rather than letting it bunch up.
14. Autumn Double Denim Outfit With Boots

Double denim only works when the washes are clearly different. My order is light or medium shirt, dark indigo trucker jacket, then black or charcoal jeans, so you get three distinct tones and no matching-set effect. Brown service boots and a matching leather belt suit the workwear feel. If you need extra warmth, wear the shirt partly open over a white thermal. Straight-leg jeans sit better over chunky boots than skinny ones. If the trucker feels too much, a dark denim overshirt is a softer swap.
15. Autumn Blazer Outfit With Jeans

Texture is what lets a blazer sit comfortably with jeans. A smooth worsted suit jacket looks orphaned over denim, but tweed, wool flannel or brushed cotton in brown, charcoal or herringbone looks intended. Unstructured is better. A light blue Oxford or a cream merino crewneck underneath, with dark straight jeans that aren't heavily faded. Brown suede loafers, brogues or Chelsea boots. I check that the jacket covers the seat and that the jeans break lightly on the shoe. A muted pocket square is optional.
16. Autumn Field Jacket Outfit With Chinos

A field jacket is mostly practical: big pockets, a drawstring waist and enough length to cover the hips. Olive or tan in a streamlined cut, over a navy crewneck with a white tee underneath, with beige, stone or dark brown chinos and suede chukkas. These are colors most men already own. If the jacket has an inside drawstring, pull it in a little to give the waist shape without making it tight. Straight or lightly tapered chinos balance all those pockets. It handles a mild afternoon and a cool evening equally well.
17. Autumn Turtleneck Outfit With Wide-Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers need a slim top, and a fine-knit turtleneck is the cleanest option. Black, cream, chocolate or burgundy, tucked into high or mid-rise trousers in charcoal, taupe or dark olive. A cropped suede jacket or short wool blouson keeps the top half compact. Loafers or square-toe boots under the wider hem. I hem these trousers so they just touch the shoe; pooled fabric looks sloppy and catches at the heel. Shorter men should pick a moderate straight-wide cut rather than a full wide leg.
18. Autumn Monochrome Outfit With Sneakers

Monochrome is the fastest way to look coordinated without thinking about color. Charcoal sweatshirt, dark gray overshirt, faded black jeans or relaxed trousers, black leather sneakers and matching socks. What keeps it from going flat is texture: cotton jersey, brushed wool, denim, leather. I leave the overshirt open so the chest has two tones. If all-black feels severe, the same approach works in navy, camel or olive. A black cap and silver watch add a little contrast.
19. Autumn Rain Jacket Outfit With Technical Pants

Wet weather outfits can still look intentional. A light waterproof shell in navy, forest green, slate or muted orange, over a merino crewneck and a wicking tee, with tapered technical pants in black or charcoal. Waterproof trail sneakers or slim hiking shoes for grip on wet pavement. Merino is the key layer here; it keeps you warm when it gets damp, unlike cotton. In town I pick a jacket with a clean shape and hidden pockets, and pants with little hardware, so it doesn't look like you're about to climb something.
20. Autumn Suit Outfit With Knitwear

Swap the dress shirt and tie for a thin knit, and a suit becomes something you can wear to dinner on a Saturday. Wool or wool blend in charcoal, deep navy, brown or a subtle check, with a fine merino crewneck or turtleneck in cream, burgundy or dark gray. Polished loafers, derbies or Chelsea boots and a belt to match. The knit must be thin, because thick knits bunch at the jacket's armholes and pull at the button. A soft-shouldered jacket and gently tapered trousers keep it current. Add a wool overcoat when it's cold.
How Much Break Your Trousers Need Over Boots
Break is the fold where the trouser hem meets the shoe, and fall footwear changes how much you want. Boots are taller and wider than sneakers, so the same trousers that sit cleanly over trainers can stack and crumple over chukkas or Chelsea boots.
For jeans over boots, I want a slight break or none, with the hem just resting on the boot's front. Wool trousers over loafers get the same light touch. Wide-leg trousers should just kiss the shoe. When a client tells me his jeans pool at the ankle, a tailor taking up an inch usually fixes it, and he should bring the boots to the fitting.
Small Alterations Worth Doing on Outerwear
Not every fit problem needs a new coat. Sleeve length is the easiest change on most jackets and the one I recommend most often: the cuff should end at the wrist bone so a little shirt or knit shows. Hems on trench coats and chore jackets can usually come up an inch or two as well.
Shoulders are the one area I tell people to get right at purchase, because moving a shoulder seam is a big, costly job and rarely looks perfect. If the shoulders fit and the rest is close, a tailor can handle it. If the shoulders are wrong, keep looking.
Fit First, Then Fall Colors
A fall wardrobe gets easier when every piece works in more than one outfit. The twenty above share a handful of layers, a few colors and the same attention to proportion. Begin with the ones that match your week, whether that's overshirts and jeans, knits and trousers, or weatherproof outerwear. Get the shoulders, waist and trouser length right before anything else, since fit fixes more than any new purchase. Neutrals form the base; burgundy, olive, rust and brown bring the season in.
